Abstract

In this reply, we include new experimental results and verify that the observed non-linearity in rippled-MoS$_2$ (leading to mobility kink) is an intrinsic property of a disordered system, rather than contact effects (invasive probes) or other device issues. Noting that Peng Wu's hypothesis is based on a highly ordered ideal system, transfer curves are expected to be linear, and the carrier density is assumed be constant. Wu's model is therefore oversimplified for disordered systems and neglects carrier-density dependent scattering physics. Thus, it is fundamentally incompatible with our rippled-MoS$_2$, and leads to the wrong conclusion.

Abstract

The discovery of novel materials for thermoelectric energy conversion has potential to be accelerated by data-driven screening combined with high-throughput calculations. One way to increase the efficacy of successfully choosing a candidate material is through its evaluation using transport descriptors. Using a data-driven screening, we selected 12 potential candidates in the trigonal ABX2 family, followed by charge transport property simulations from first principles. The results suggest that carrier scattering processes in these materials are dominated by ionised impurities and polar optical phonons, contrary to the oft-assumed acoustic-phonon-dominated scattering. Combined with calculations of thermal conductivity based on three-phonon scattering, we predict p-type AgBiS2 and TlBiTe2 as potential high-performance thermoelectrics in the intermediate temperature range for low grade waste heat harvesting, with a predicted zT above 1 at 500 K. Using these data, we further derive ground-state transport descriptors for the carrier mobility and the thermoelectric power factor. In addition to low carrier mass, high dielectric constant was found to be an important factor towards high carrier mobility. A quadratic correlation between dielectric constant and transport performance was established and further validated with literature. Looking ahead, dielectric constant can potentially be exploited as an independent tuning knob for improving the thermoelectric performance.

Abstract

Al0.85Sc0.15N thin films, about 920 nm thick, have been deposited on the Si (001) substrate by reactive magnetron sputtering at 600 °C. X-ray diffraction and pole-figure measurements revealed [0002]-oriented texture structures of the nitride films without any phase separations before and after cyclic annealing at 600–900 °C for up to 48 min. Cross-sectional studies by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis revealed an intermediate Al0.85Sc0.15N layer of ∼24.6 nm thick with smaller grains and tilted [0002]-orientations compared to its overlayer, i.e., a nucleation layer (NL), on the Si substrate. After annealing, apparent morphological changes have been observed at the near-interface regions, including the NL, the NL/Si interface, and the Si substrate, rather than in the Al0.85Sc0.15N overlay. Undesired oxygen has been observed in the nitride film and its composition increased during post-growth thermal annealing without forming oxides. These observations shed new light on crystal growth and post-growth thermal annealing of AlScN toward their high-performance piezoelectric applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Vertically-aligned oxide nanocomposite films for improved ferroelectrics and ferromagnetics

Abstract

In this work, I start by introducing a relatively recently innovated thin film architecture which offers a new direction in strain control, the vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN). I first present the literature in the field, explaining the advantages and unique novel properties stemming from VAN structures. Next, I introduce the work I did to examine the unique strain states of Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3–Sm2O3 VAN structures. It was found that the strain states in the functional Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 phase are unconventional compared to those in planar thin films. 3-dimensional strain was found to be acting on the Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 phase in the VAN structure. The origin of the strain was explained using a simple model which takes into account thermal expansion mismatch as well as lattice mismatch and elastic coefficients. The ferroelectric properties of the films were presented in relation to the observed strain states. I next present the work I did on the influence of strain on the magnetic properties in VAN film of Sm0.34Sr0.66MnO3–Sm2O3. Ferromagnetism was achieved in an otherwise antiferromagnetic Sm0.34Sr0.66MnO3. The effect was explained by a strain induced transition from super-exchange to double exchange coupling in the material. Last but not least, the potential of scalability of VAN films was explored by using sputtering to grow VAN structures instead of the commonly-used PLD growth. BaTiO3–Sm2O3 was used as a primary study material due to its well reported VAN properties. Preliminary results showing indications of a VAN structure. Some basic physical property characterization is also presented and compared to the properties of PLD-grown films in the literature. Limitations and challenges that arise due to the fundamental differences between sputtering and PLD are also described.

37. Thermoelectrics for nuclear fusion reactors: opportunities and challenges.

Abstract

Nuclear fusion energy holds great promise for being the ultimate solution to the ever-expanding energy needs of modern civilization. Based on the ideal operating temperature ranges of the plasma-facing armour materials and molten salt coolant in tokamak fusion reactors, there is a significant unutilized temperature gradient of ∼973–1273 K that can be potentially harvested by thermoelectric (TE) devices, without affecting the efficiency of the existing molten salt's heat cycle. In this review, we assess the potential suitability of various high temperature TE materials, such as Si1−xGex, n-type La3−xTe4, p-type Yb14(Mg,Mn)Sb11 zintl compounds, p-type B4C and other borides, for applications on plasma-facing surfaces of nuclear fusion reactors. The practical considerations of plasma-facing TE devices in fusion reactors were also discussed in detail, where potential overlaps between material modifications for enhancing TE properties and neutron irradiation resistance in materials were identified, together with compromises in TE device design parameters. Lastly, transverse TE materials, especially high temperature goniopolar Re4Si7 were also discussed in relation to their potential for Ettingshausen refrigeration for liquid He-free cooling of magnetic field coils. With the continued development of improved fusion reactor designs and structural materials, more opportunities for TE material applications are bound to open up, catalysing the advancement of TE material development for applications under extreme conditions. Abstract

Polyethylene (PE), a highly prevalent non‐biodegradable polymer in the field of plastics, presents a waste management issue. To alleviate this issue, bio‐based PE (bio‐PE), derived from renewable resources like corn and sugarcane, offers an environmentally friendly alternative. This review discusses various production methods of bio‐PE, including fermentation, gasification, and catalytic conversion of biomass. Interestingly, the bio‐PE production volumes and market are expanding due to the growing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures. Additionally, the production of PE and bio‐PE biocomposites using agricultural waste as filler materials, highlights the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. According to previous studies, addition of ≈50% defibrillated corn and abaca fibers into bio‐PE matrix and a compatibilizer, results in the highest Young's modulus of 4.61 and 5.81 GPa, respectively. These biocomposites have potential applications in automotive, building construction, and furniture industries. Moreover, the advancement made in abiotic and biotic degradation of PE and PE biocomposites is elucidated to address their environmental impacts. Finally, the paper concludes with insights into the opportunities, challenges, and future perspectives in the sustainable production and utilization of PE and bio‐PE biocomposites.
