In this qualitative study, the focus is on healthy eating in children from low-income families who visit a Community Child Care center (CCC) in South Korea. Barriers for healthy eating were identified using focus group interviews with low-income overweight and obese children and their caregivers and applying a social ecological model as well as the framework analysis for qualitative data. The need for theory- and evidence-based health promotion interventions is indicated, at the level of the family, but also at the level of collaboration among all stakeholders, as well as multi-level policy changes.

This study classified the changes in alcohol use behavior among Korean adults and explored the related factors. The study used data from the 4th (2009) to 14th (2019) waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Study. The subjects were 8267 adults aged 19–60 years. Latent class growth analysis was used to classify the latent classes of alcohol use behavior among Korean adults, and logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the specific factors that form the classes. Additionally, the 11-year trajectories of major variables associated with alcohol use behavior for the derived classes were analyzed using growth mixture modeling. Four classes were identified according to the trajectories of alcohol use behavior. There were statistically significant differences in the trajectories of depression, self-esteem, satisfaction in family relationships, and satisfaction in leisure activities according to the class of alcohol use behavior. In particular, self-esteem and satisfaction in family relationships indicated distinctly decreasing trajectories in the low- to moderate-risk class, which suggested the need for longitudinal analysis of the factors that influence alcohol use behavior. Moreover, it is recommended that interventions for the prevention of high-risk drinking target not only individuals but also family units.

Background: Although self-directed learning (SDL) has become an essential instrument for educating nursing professionals, little is known about SDL among nurses in a developing country. Method: Data were collected using a structured self-reporting survey, which included Fisher's Self-Directed Learning Readiness (SDLR) scale, and a multiple linear regression analysis was conducted. Results: The mean score per item on the SDLR was 4.31 of 5. The learning-related factors that influenced SDLR were motivation for learning and self-efficacy in English proficiency, and the working-related factor was job satisfaction. These variables accounted for 17.6% of the variance in SDLR scores. Conclusion: The SDLR of nurse learners in Sri Lanka was influenced not only by learning-related factors but also by working-related factors. Therefore, it is necessary to develop multidimensional strategies to strengthen nurses' SDLR. [ J Contin Educ Nurs. 2019;50(1):41–48.]

Presented in this paper is a study that examined the status of unmet healthcare needs of children in vulnerable families and identified factors affecting such unmet needs. The Community Child Center (CCC) Child Panel Survey data in Korea were used. A multiple stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed to examine factors influencing unmet healthcare needs of children. Influencing factors comprised predisposing, enabling, and need factors based on the Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization. A total of 340 sixth-graders from vulnerable families participated, and 96 (28.2%) children had unmet healthcare needs. Factors included absence of an after-school caregiver (OR = 1.95, 95% CI [1.16, 3.27]), perceived physical symptoms (OR = 1.33, 95% CI [1.02, 1.73]), parental indifference (OR = 1.33, 95% CI [1.002, 1.77]), duration of daily stay at CCCs (OR = 1.32, 95% CI [1.01, 1.71]), and satisfaction with CCC teachers (OR = 0.65, 95% CI [0.49, 0.85]). The relationship with parents and CCC teachers had the strongest influence on unmet healthcare needs of children. In order to reduce the unmet healthcare needs of children in vulnerable families, existing support structures should be expanded to offer financial and administrative support for children&rsquo, s parents and CCC teachers.

Using hierarchical multiple regression analysis, the current study aimed to investigate ecological predictors of recovery-oriented practices among 230 psychiatric nurses in South Korea. Intrapersonal predictors associated with recovery-oriented practice were educational level, type of workplace, and attitudes regarding recovery. Extent of nursing practice environment recognized by nurses at the organizational level was also significant. Recovery-oriented practices were associated with intrapersonal and organizational factors. Therefore, it is necessary to provide multi-level considerations to improve recovery-oriented practices among psychiatric nurses. The purpose of this study was to identify the level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to investigate the ecological predictors that associated with HRQoL of children from low-income families in South Korea. This study employed a descriptive, correlational, non-experimental research design. The convenience sample included 141 school-age children from low-income families using a community child care center. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was employed. The mean score of the children's HRQoL was 77.35 out of 100. The predictors that associated with the HRQoL of the children were health perception, health-promoting behaviors at the intrapersonal level, peer support at the interpersonal level, and the daily time use at the center at the organizational level. These variables accounted for 48.2% of the variance in HRQoL. The HRQoL of children from low-income families was associated with not only by intrapersonal factors but also by environmental factors. Therefore, it is necessary to provide multi-level interventions to improve these children's HRQoL.

In this study, we examined emotional/behavioral problems and self-concept in adolescents from low-income families in Korea; additionally, we identified ecological factors associated with these traits. This descriptive study employed an ecological model to analyze data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. A nationwide stratified multistage cluster sampling methodology was used. Overall, 2534 first-year middle school students were included in the survey, and the survey was conducted from 2010 to 2016. Hierarchical multiple regression models were generated. The mean score of emotional/behavioral problem has been changed from 2.20 (2011), 2.15 (2013), to 2.11 (2015) out of 4, and the mean score of self-concept has been changed from 2.73 (2012), 2.73 (2014), to 2.77 (2015) out of 4. Factors that influenced emotional/behavioral problems and self-concept among adolescents were health perception and academic achievement (only associated with self-concept) at the intrapersonal level and parenting style, peer attachment (only associated with self-concept), and relationships with teachers at the interpersonal level. These results may be used to inform the development of interventions designed to decrease emotional/behavioral problems and improve positive self-concept in adolescents from low-income families.

The purpose of this study is to examine the attributes and verify the definition of the recovery-oriented psychiatric nursing concept using the hybrid model suggested by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim ( 2000 ). In the theoretical analysis phase, a literature search was conducted and data were collected using the Pubmed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar databases. This study considered of 7 empirical studies, 21 guidelines, 12 instruments, 2 related theories, 3 practical models, and 2 intervention programs. In the fieldwork phase, this study performed in-depth interviews with nine psychiatric nurses. After comprehensively analyzing the attributes of recovery-oriented psychiatric nursing through a literature review and the fieldwork phase, this study rearranged the final attributes and definition of recovery-oriented psychiatric nursing in the final analytic phase as follows: "Placing consumers in the center of nursing as human beings"; "Expecting with hope"; "Encouraging them to lead a satisfactory life"; "Guiding them to live along with their peers, family and the community"; "Becoming a companion"; "Growing together"; and "Establishing a nursing organizational culture and system." The results of this study will be used as the basic data for developing educational contents and practice guidelines for the quick resolution and activation of recovery-oriented psychiatric nursing.

PURPOSE: This study was done to test a hypothesized model, the Biobehavioral Family Model (BBFM), on the relationship of family emotional climate, security of parent-child relationship, depression symptoms and eating problems in adolescent girls, to further understanding of eating problems in this population.METHODS: With a convenience sample of 647 girls, aged 15 to 18, a self-report survey was conducted which included the Korean form of the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) to assess eating problems.RESULTS: The estimated results of the structural equation modeling indicated a good fit of data to the hypothesized model proposing that family emotional climate and security of parent-child relationship were associated with the risk of eating problems by way of depression symptoms. That is, negative family emotional climate and insecure parent-child relationship increased the risk of eating problems indirectly by way of depression symptoms.CONCLUSION: The findings are consistent with the BBFM, which suggests a psychobiologic influence of specific family processes on children's stress-sensitive physical disease activity by way of depression symptoms. Therefore, the applicability of the BBFM for understanding adolescent girls' eating problems is supported. The psychobiologic pathways from depression to eating pathology should be addressed in future studies.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of abnormal eating attitudes and to identify possible risk factors associated with these attitudes among Korean adolescent girls. Methods: A convenience sample of 1,126 girls aged 15 to 19 years was recruited from thirteen high schools. A self-report survey was conducted including Eating Attitude Test for diagnosing abnormal eating attitudes. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression with PASW statistics 18.0. Results: Of the participants, 8.3% met the criteria for abnormal eating attitudes. Misperception of body image, depression, and high or low economical status were significantly associated with abnormal eating attitudes (OR=3.50, 95% CI=1.95~6.28; OR=5.47, 95% CI=3.17~9.44; OR=2.26, 95% CI=1.14~4.47; OR=2.41, 95% CI=1.25~4.66). Conclusion: The current study identified the family factors as well as internal ones related to abnormal eating attitudes of Korean adolescent girls. The results indicate that the most effective prevention strategies for this population would be to correct their misperception of body image and control depression. Results also suggest that further studies are necessary to develop a predictive model that could explain the influence of family factors including parent-child interaction and family function to abnormal eating attitudes.
