Abstract: Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. Abstract: We have investigated the status of the nuclear debris in the Unit-2 Nuclear Reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant by the method called Cosmic Muon Radiography. In this measurement, the muon detector was placed outside of the reactor building as was the case of the measurement for the Unit-1 Reactor. Compared to the previous measurements, the detector was down-sized, which made us possible to locate it closer to the reactor and to investigate especially the lower part of the fuel loading zone. We identified the inner structures of the reactor such as the containment vessel, pressure vessel and other objects through the thick concrete wall of the reactor building. We succeeded in identifying the inner structure of the reactor complex such as the reactor containment vessel, pressure vessel, and other structures of the reactor building, through the concrete wall of the reactor building. We found that a large amount of fuel assemblies was missing in the original fuel loading zone inside the pressure vessel. Abstract: A large, world-wide community of physicists is working to realise an exceptional physics program of energy-frontier, electron-positron collisions with the International Linear Collider (ILC). This program will begin with a central focus on high-precision and model-independent measurements of the Higgs boson couplings. This method of searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model is orthogonal to and complements the LHC physics program. The ILC at 250 GeV will also search for direct new physics in exotic Higgs decays and in pair-production of weakly interacting particles. Polarised electron and positron beams add unique opportunities to the physics reach. The ILC can be upgraded to higher energy, enabling precision studies of the top quark and measurement of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs self-coupling. The key accelerator technology, superconducting radio-frequency cavities, has matured. Optimised collider and detector designs, and associated physics analyses, were presented in the ILC Technical Design Report, signed by 2400 scientists. There is a strong interest in Japan to host this international effort. A detailed review of the many aspects of the project is nearing a conclusion in Japan. Now the Japanese government is preparing for a decision on the next phase of international negotiations, that could lead to a project start within a few years. The potential timeline of the ILC project includes an initial phase of about 4 years to obtain international agreements, complete engineering design and prepare construction, and form the requisite international collaboration, followed by a construction phase of 9 years.

9. Combination of Blood Adiponectin and Leptin Levels Is a Predictor of Biochemical Recurrence in Prostate Cancer Invading the Surrounding Adipose Tissue.

Abstract: Biochemical recurrence is a process that progresses to castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and prediction of biochemical recurrence is useful in determining early therapeutic intervention and disease treatment. Prostate cancer is surrounded by adipose tissue, which secretes adipokines, affecting cancer progression. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between blood adipokines and CRPC biochemical recurrence. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data, including preoperative serum adipokine levels, of 99 patients with pT3a pN0 prostate cancer who underwent proctectomy between 2011 and 2019. The primary outcome was biochemical recurrence (prostate-specific antigen: PSA > 0.2). We identified 65 non-recurrences and 34 biochemical recurrences (one progressed to CRPC). The initial PSA level was significantly higher (p = 0.006), but serum adiponectin (p = 0.328) and leptin (p = 0.647) levels and their ratio (p = 0.323) were not significantly different in the biochemical recurrence group compared with the non-recurrence group. In contrast, significantly more biochemical recurrences were observed in the group with adiponectin < 6 μg/mL and Leptin < 4 ng/mL (p = 0.046), initial PSA > 15 ng/mL, clinical Gleason pattern ≥ 4, and positive resection margin. A significant difference was also observed in the multivariate analysis (hazard ratio: 4.04, 95% confidence interval: 1.21–13.5, p = 0.0232). Thus, low preoperative serum adiponectin and high leptin levels were significantly associated with biochemical recurrence in adipose tissue-invasive prostate cancer, suggesting that they may be useful predictors of biochemical recurrence. Abstract: The primary goal of KamLAND is a search for the oscillation of $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$$'$s emitted from distant power reactors. The long baseline, typically 180 km, enables KamLAND to address the oscillation solution of the solar neutrino problem with $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$ under laboratory conditions. KamLAND found fewer reactor $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$ events than expected from standard assumptions about $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$$'$s propagation at more than 9 {\sigma} confidence level (C.L.). The observed energy spectrum disagrees with the expected spectral shape at more than 5 {\sigma} C.L., and prefers the distortion from neutrino oscillation effects. A three-flavor oscillation analysis of the data from KamLAND and KamLAND + solar neutrino experiments with CPT invariance, yields ${\Delta}{\rm m}^{2}_{21} = [{7.54}^{+0.19}_{0.18},\ {7.53}^{+0.19}_{0.18}]$ $\times {10}^{-5} {\rm eV}^{2}$, $\tan^{2} {\theta}_{12} = [{0.481}^{+0.092}_{-0.080},\ {0.437}^{+0.029}_{-0.026}]$, and ${\sin}^{2} {\theta}_{13} = [{0.010}^{+0.033}_{-0.034},{0.023}^{+0.015}_{-0.015}]$. All solutions to the solar neutrino problem except for the large mixing angle (LMA) region are excluded. KamLAND also demonstrated almost two cycles of the periodic feature expected from neutrino oscillation effects. KamLAND performed the first experimental study of antineutrinos from the Earth$'$s interior so-called geoneutrinos (geo $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$$'$s), and succeeded in detecting geo $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$$`$s produced by the decays of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th within the Earth. Assuming a chondritic Th/U mass ratio, we obtain ${116}^{+28}_{-27}$ $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$ events from $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th, corresponding a geo $\bar{\nu}_{\rm e}$ flux of ${3.4}^{+0.8}_{-0.8} \times {10}^{6} {\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ at the KamLAND location. We evaluate various bulk silicate Earth composition models using the observed geoneutrino rate.

Abstract: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the ureter is very rare and only 14 previous cases have been reported. Here, we report a case of LELC of the ureter. A 76-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of gross hematuria. Left ureteral cancer was suspected by the imaging examination, and laparoscopic left total nephroureterectomy was performed. Histopathological examination showed pure type of LELC in the ureter. She is alive without disease recurrence at fifteen months after surgery.

Abstract: Bacillus subtilisstrains including the fermented soybean (natto) starter produce capsular polymers consisting of poly-γ-glutamate and levan. Capsular polymers may protect the cells from phage infection. However, bacteriophage ϕNIT1 carries a γ-PGA hydrolase gene (pghP) that help it to counteract the host cell’s protection strategy. ϕNIT had a linear double stranded DNA genome of 155,631-bp with a terminal redundancy of 5,103-bp, containing a gene encoding an active levan hydrolase. These capsule-lytic enzyme genes were located in the possible foreign gene cluster regions between central core and terminal redundant regions, and were expressed at the late phase of the phage lytic cycle. All tested natto origin Spounavirinaephages carried both genes for capsule degrading enzymes similar to ϕNIT1. A comparative genomic analysis revealed the diversity among ϕNIT1 and Bacillusphages carrying pghP-like and levan-hydrolase genes, and provides novel understanding on the acquisition mechanism of these enzymatic genes.
