Abstract

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. Abstract

In ferromagnets, electric current generally induces transverse Hall voltage in proportion to magnetization (anomalous Hall effect), and it is frequently used for electrical readout of the up and down spin states. While these properties are usually not expected in antiferromagnets, recent theoretical studies predicted that non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order with finite scalar spin chirality (i.e. solid angle spanned by neighboring spins) can often induce large spontaneous Hall effect even without net magnetization or external magnetic field. This phenomenon, i.e. spontaneous topological Hall effect, can potentially be used for the efficient electrical readout of the antiferromagnetic states, but its experimental verification has long been elusive due to the lack of appropriate materials hosting such exotic magnetism. Here, we report the discovery of all-in-all-out type non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order in triangular lattice compounds CoTa3S6 and CoNb3S6, by performing the detailed magnetic structure analysis based on polarized neutron scattering experiments as well as systematic first-principles calculations. These compounds are reported to host unconventionally large spontaneous Hall effect despite their vanishingly small net magnetization, and our analysis revealed that it can be well explained in terms of topological Hall effect, which originates from the fictitious magnetic field associated with scalar spin chirality in non-coplanar antiferromagnetic orders. The present results indicate that the scalar spin chirality mechanism can offer a promising route to realize giant spontaneous Hall response even in compensated antiferromagnets, and highlight intercalated van der Waals magnets as an unique quasi-two-dimensional material platform to enable various nontrivial manner of electrical reading and possible writing of non-coplanar antiferromagnetic domains., Comment: to appear in Nature Physics

However, colistin resistance mediated by chromosomal mutations or plasmid-linked mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) genes has emerged.Methods: Thirteen mcr-positive Aeromonas species isolated from water samples collected in Eastern Ghana were analyzed using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the broth microdilution method. Resistome analysis was performed in silico using a web-based platform.Results: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of colistin for all except three isolates was > 4 μg/mL. Nine new sequence types were identified and whole-genome analysis revealed that the isolates harbored genes (mcr-3-related genes) that code for Lipid A phosphoethanolamine transferases on their chromosomes. BLAST analysis indicated that the amino acid sequences of the mcr-3-related genes detected varied from those previously reported and shared 79.04– 99.86% nucleotide sequence identity with publicly available mcr-3 variants and mcr-3-related phosphoethanolamine transferases. Analysis of the genetic context of mcr-3-related genes revealed that the genetic environment surrounding mcr-3-related genes was diverse among the different species of Aeromonas but conserved among isolates of the same species. Mcr-3-related-gene-IS-mcr-3-related-gene segment was identified in three Aeromonas caviae strains.Conclusion: The presence of mcr-3-related genes close to insertion elements is important for continuous monitoring to better understand how to control the mobilization and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.Keywords: Aeromonas spp, colistin, mcr-3-related gene, phosphoethanolamine transferases, whole genome analysis

Abstract

We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 \pm 9 \mu s.

Abstract

The rare-earth nitrides form a series of structurally simple $intrinsic$ ferromagnetic semiconductors, a rare class of both fundamental interest and application potential. Within the series there is a wide range of magnetic properties relating to the spin/orbit contributions to the ferromagnetic ground states. We report an x-ray magnetic circular dichroism investigation of the spin/orbit magnetic dipole alignments of Sm and Gd ions in epitaxial Gd$_x$Sm$_{1-x}$N films. The Sm spin-alignment expectation value $\langle S_{z} \rangle$ is seen to be strengthened by the Gd/Sm exchange interaction, providing guidance concerning the composition for an angular momentum compensation point (where the volume-averaged total angular momentum of a film is zero)., Comment: 7 Pages, 7 Figures. Abstract

The study of non-s-wave unconventional superconductivities in strongly correlated-electron systems has been a central issue in condensed matter physics for more than 30 years. In such unconventional superconductivities, d-wave Cooper pairing with antiparallel spins has been often observed in various quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) bulk systems. Interestingly, many theories predicted that the triangular lattice causes the d-wave pairing to be unstable and may lead to more exotic pairing such as parallel spin (spin-triplet) pairing. Here we focus on a bulk organic triangular-lattice system in which superconductivity emerges near a nonmagnetic Mott insulating phase. We demonstrate, by using low-power nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, that the spin susceptibility of the superconducting state retains the normal state value even deep in the superconducting state. This result indicates the possibility that the material exhibits spin-triplet superconductivity. Our finding will bring insights also into understanding the 2D materials with triangular moire superlattices that are considered also to show unconventional superconductivities near Mott-like insulating states., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

8. Sand bar opening in a coastal lagoon (Iquipari) in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State: hydrological and hydrochemical changes

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to verify hydrological and hydrochemical changes in the Iquiparí Lagoon water column, during three months, as related to an artificial sand bar opening. A drastic reduction in water volume occurred 28 hours after the sand bar opening, exposing the bottom sediment. This was densely colonized by submerged aquatic plants, which were dominant in the ecosystem metabolism, specially near the sand bar. An increase in salinity values, and dissolved and total nutrient concentrations, was observed during the sand bar opening period. In contrast, chlorophyll a concentration decreased. These changes were associated with: 1) mix of remained brackish and marine waters; 2) nutrient release from sediments by physical processes; and 3) submerged plant death. After the sand bar closure, lagoon metabolism was completely regulated by a dense phytoplankton community. We observed that the sand bar opening resulted in an extensile replacement of the lagoon's water and a change in the community mainly responsible for the ecosystem metabolism.

Abstract

Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$ (MnGa) with the $L1_0$ structure is a ferromagnetic material with strong perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Although MnGa thin films have been successfully grown epitaxially and studied for various spintronics devices, fundamental understandings of its electronic structure are still lacking. To address this issue, we have investigated $L1_0$-MnGa thin films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We have observed a large Fermi surface with a rhombic shape in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane overlapping neighboring Fermi surfaces. The $k_z$ dependence of the band structure suggests that the band dispersion observed by ARPES comes from the three-dimensional band structure of MnGa folded by a $\sqrt{2} \times \sqrt{2}$ reconstruction. The band dispersion across the corner of the rhombic Fermi surface forms an electron pocket with a weak $k_z$ dependence. The effective mass and the mobility of the bands crossing the Fermi level near the corner are estimated from the ARPES images. Based on the experimental findings, the relationship between the observed band structure and the spin-dependent properties in MnGa-based heterostructures is discussed., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT) has a two-dimensional crystal structure where each layer is stacked through van der Waals force. We have investigated the nature of the ferromagnetism and the weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of CGT by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of CGT single crystals. The XMCD spectra at the Cr $L_{2,3}$ edge for different magnetic field directions were analyzed on the basis of the cluster-model multiplet calculation. The Cr valence is confirmed to be 3+ and the orbital magnetic moment is found to be nearly quenched, as expected for the high-spin $t_{2g}$$^3$ configuration of the Cr$^{3+}$ ion. A large ($\sim 0.2$ eV) trigonal crystal-field splitting of the $t_{2g}$ level caused by the distortion of the CrTe$_6$ octahedron has been revealed, while the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) of the Cr atom is found to have a sign {\it opposite} to the observed PMA and too weak compared to the reported anisotropy energy. The present result suggests that anisotropic exchange coupling between the Cr atoms through the ligand Te $5p$ orbitals having strong spin-orbit coupling has to be invoked to explain the weak PMA of CGT, as in the case of the strong PMA of CrI$_3$., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Magnetic skyrmion, i.e. a topologically stable swirling spin texture, appears as a particle-like object in the two-dimensional (2D) systems, and has recently attracted attention as a candidate of novel information carrier. In the real three-dimensional (3D) systems, a skyrmion is expected to form a string structure along an extra dimension, while its experimental identification has rarely been achieved. Here, we report the direct visualization of 3D shape of individual skyrmion strings, for the recently discovered room-temperature skyrmion-hosting noncentrosymmetric compound Mn1.4Pt0.9Pd0.1Sn. For this purpose, we have newly developed the magnetic X-ray tomography measurement system that can apply magnetic field, which plays a key role on the present achievement. Through the tomographic reconstruction of the 3D magnetization distribution based on the transmission images taken from various angles, a genuine skyrmion string running through the entire thickness of the sample, as well as various defect structures such as the interrupted and Y-shaped strings, are successfully identified. The observed point defect may represent the emergent magnetic monopole, as recently proposed theoretically. The present tomographic approach with tunable magnetic field paves the way for the direct visualization of the structural dynamics of individual skyrmion strings in the 3D space, which will contribute to the better understanding of the creation, annihilation and transfer process of these topological objects toward the potential device applications., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

The AST calculated a quality indicator (QI) based on the results of the investigation and started QI monitoring and hospital feedback.Results: From January 2020 to March 2021 (the third COVID-19 wave), the implementation rate of antibiotic administration within 3 hours after blood culture collection decreased as the COVID-19 pandemic spread, and the implementation rate tended to increase as the number of COVID-19-positive patients decreased. However, when the AST started monitoring and feedback from April 2021, although there was a temporary decline in the early stages of the fifth wave when the scale of infection was large, the implementation rate rose and was maintained by AST intervention. (the fourth and the fifth COVID-19 waves) (P< 0.01). Also, the implementation rate was significantly lower during the COVID-19 pandemic than during the non- pandemic (P< 0.05).Conclusion: The early COVID-19 pandemic may have affected the delay in time from blood culture collection to antibiotic administration. Later, in recurring COVID-19 pandemics, AST intervention eliminated this problem. When a bacterial infection such as sepsis is suspected, delayed treatment can be prevented by promptly collecting a blood culture, irrespective of concerns about COVID-19 infection. In recent years, nutritional indices have been reported as significant prognostic factors in various chronic diseases. However, the relationship between nutritional indicators and prognosis in elderly subjects with COPD has not been investigated.Patients and methods: We enrolled 91 subjects who received COPD assessment tests (CAT), spirometry, blood tests, and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). We divided the subjects into two groups according to age (< 75 years (n=57) and ≥ 75 years (n=34)). The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) was used to assess immune-nutritional status and was calculated as 10 x serum albumin + 0.005 x total lymphocyte count. We then examined the relationship between PNI and clinical parameters, including exacerbation events.Results: There was no significant correlation between the PNI and CAT, the FEV1%pred, or low attenuation volume percentage (LAV%). In the elderly group, there were significant differences between the groups with or without exacerbation in the CAT and PNI (p=0.008, p=0.004, respectively). FEV1%pred, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and LAV% did not differ between the two groups. The analytical model combining CAT and PNI improved the prediction of exacerbations in the elderly subjects (p=0.0068).Conclusion: In elderly subjects with COPD, CAT were associated significantly with the risk of COPD exacerbation, with PNI also a potential predictor. Abstract

The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4-{\delta} (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here, we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate that the actual electron concentration (nFS ) estimated from the Fermi-surface area is significantly larger than the Ce concentration x and the new nFS-based SC dome of PLCCO is more extended towards the overdoped side than the x-based SC dome derived for samples prepared using the conventional annealing method.

This study aims to investigate the effects of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor tofogliflozin (TOFO) and the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor anagliptin (ANA) on markers of glucose metabolism and atherosclerosis when administered individually or in combination.Methods: Fifty T2DM patients were divided into two groups (receiving either TOFO or ANA monotherapy) and observed for 12 weeks (observation points: 0 and 12 weeks). The TOFO and ANA groups were then further treated with ANA and TOFO, respectively, and the patients were observed for an additional 36 weeks (observation points: 24 and 48 weeks). Therapeutic effects and various biomarkers were compared between the two groups at the observation points.Results: Combination therapy led to significant improvements in HbA1c levels and atherosclerosis markers. Additionally, the TOFO pretreatment group exhibited significant reductions in sLOX-1 and IL-6 levels.Conclusion: The increase in sLOX-1 and IL-6 levels, which indicates the response of scavenger receptors to oxidized low-density lipoproteins in people with T2DM, is mitigated following TOFO and ANA combination therapy. Abstract

We find systematic signatures suggesting a different superconducting nature for a triple-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+\delta}$ with respect to a double-layer through the properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). Our measurements on the current-voltage characteristics reveal that the $c$-axis maximum Josephson current density is sensitive to the superfluid density in outer planes while the critical temperature and the superconducting gap remain unaffected. Switching dynamics of stacked IJJs exhibit that the fluctuation in gauge-invariant phase difference of an IJJ implies that the inner plane completely shields the capacitive coupling between adjacent IJJs, which is essential for mono- and bilayered cuprates., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We propose a systematic method to generate a complete orthonormal basis set of multipole expansion for magnetic structures in arbitrary crystal structure. The key idea is the introduction of a virtual atomic cluster of a target crystal, on which we can clearly define the magnetic configurations corresponding to symmetry-adapted multipole moments. The magnetic configurations are then mapped onto the crystal so as to preserve the magnetic point group of the multipole moments, leading to the magnetic structures classified according to the irreducible representations of crystallographic point group. We apply the present scheme to pyrhochlore and hexagonal ABO3 crystal structures, and demonstrate that the multipole expansion is useful to investigate the macroscopic responses of antiferromagnets.

When considering the “one airway, one disease” concept, sensitization to pollen could predict responsiveness to omalizumab. This study aimed to assess whether the pretreatment specific IgE response could be a predictor of responsiveness to omalizumab in severe allergic asthma sensitized to perennial allergens.Methods: In this retrospective study, 41 adult patients with severe allergic asthma sensitized to perennial allergens (27 females; mean age 59 years) who had completed 52-week omalizumab treatment were enrolled. The Global Evaluation of Treatment Effectiveness was performed, and demographic characteristics and the positive ratios of specific IgE responses classified into five subgroups (pollen, dust mite, house dust, mold, and animal dander) were compared between responders and non-responders. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of responsiveness to omalizumab.Results: Thirty-one patients (76%) were identified as responders. The number of sensitized aeroallergen subgroups and sensitization to pollens were significantly higher in responders than in non-responders (both p< 0.05). Abstract

The nature of the pseudogap and its relationship with superconductivity are one of the central issues of cuprate superconductors. Recently, a possible scenario has been proposed that the pseudogap state is a distinct phase characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking called "nematicity" based on transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements, where the symmetry breaking was observed below the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. Here, we report a temperature-dependent ARPES study of nematicity in slightly overdoped Bi${}_{1.7}$Pb${}_{0.5}$Sr${}_{1.9}$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+\delta}$ triggered by a uniaxial strain applied along one of the Cu-O bond directions. While the nematicity was enhanced in the pseudogap state as in the previous studies, it was suppressed in the superconducting state. These results indicate that the pseudogap state is characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and that the nematicity may compete with superconductivity. These new experimental insights may provide clues for the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to the superconductivity.

Abstract

In order to investigate the electronic properties of the semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT), where ferromagnetic layers are bonded through van der Waals forces, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density-functional-theory (DFT+U) calculations. The valence-band maximum at the {\Gamma} point is located $\sim$ 0.2 eV below the Fermi level, consistent with the semiconducting property of CGT. Comparison of the experimental density of states with the DFT calculation has suggested that Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.1 eV. The DFT+U calculation indicates that magnetic coupling between Cr atoms within the layer is ferromagnetic if Coulomb U $_{\rm eff}$ is smaller than 3.0 eV and that the inter-layer coupling is ferromagnetic below U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.0 eV. We therefore conclude that, for U$_{\rm eff}$ deduced by the experiment, the intra-layer Cr-Cr coupling is ferromagnetic and the inter-layer coupling is near the boundary between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, which means experimentally deduced U$_{\rm eff}$ is consistent with theoretical ferromagnetic condition., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25$^{th}$ of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

Recent discovery of both gapped and gapless topological phases in weakly correlated electron systems has introduced various relativistic particles and a number of exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics. The Weyl fermion is a prominent example of three dimensional (3D), gapless topological excitation, which has been experimentally identified in inversion symmetry breaking semimetals. However, their realization in spontaneously time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking magnetically ordered states of correlated materials has so far remained hypothetical. Here, we report a set of experimental evidence for elusive magnetic Weyl fermions in Mn$_3$Sn, a non-collinear antiferromagnet that exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect even at room temperature. Detailed comparison between our angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals significant bandwidth renormalization and damping effects due to the strong correlation among Mn 3$d$ electrons. Moreover, our transport measurements have unveiled strong evidence for the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions, namely, the emergence of positive magnetoconductance only in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic Weyl fermions of Mn$_3$Sn have a significant technological potential, since a weak field ($\sim$ 10 mT) is adequate for controlling the distribution of Weyl points and the large fictitious field ($\sim$ a few 100 T) in the momentum space. Abstract

The strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt has been the subject of extensive studies for a long time. However, it is not known which element, Fe or Pt, mainly contributes to the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). We have investigated the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moments of Fe 3$d$ and Pt 5$d$ electrons in $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt thin films by Fe and Pt $L_{2,3}$-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements for samples with various degrees of long-range chemical order $S$. Fe $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD showed that the orbital magnetic moment was larger when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film than parallel to it, and that the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment increased with $S$. Pt $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD also showed that the orbital magnetic moment was smaller when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film than parallel to it, opposite to the Fe $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD results although the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment increases with $S$ like the Fe edge. These results are qualitatively consistent with the first-principles calculation by Solovyev ${\it et\ al.}$ [Phys. Rev. B $\bf{52}$, 13419 (1995).], which also predicts the dominant contributions of Pt 5$d$ to the magnetic anisotropy energy rather than Fe 3$d$ due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the small spin splitting of the Pt 5$d$ bands in $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

However, established guidelines for the selection, switching, or discontinuation of biologics do not exist. We aimed to identify the clinical characteristics of patients with asthma who required switching biologics and the factors associated with switching biologics.Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective study of 42 patients with severe asthma treated with biologics at the Hokkaido University Hospital between 23rd June 2016 and 30th April 2021, when two biologics were available in Japan. We compared the characteristics of subjects who continued and switched biologics. The time to switch the biologics was assessed by type 2 inflammatory biomarkers, pulmonary function indices, and the presence of comorbidities, including the Japanese Epidemiological Survey of Refractory Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis (JESREC) score and aspirin exacerbated respiratory diseases (AERD), using the Kaplan–Meier method and a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model.Results: Eight and five patients were treated by mepolizumab and benralizumab at baseline, respectively among the 31% (13/42) who switched the biologics. Subjects who required switching biologics were characterized by high blood eosinophil counts, younger age, JESREC scores of 11 points or higher, and AERD. The time taken to switch biologics was significantly shorter in the subgroups with high JESREC scores (≥ 11) or AERD, compared with their counterparts with low JESREC scores or without AERD (both, P < 0.05).
