The Triassic-Jurassic transition, from the Norian to the Hettangian (corresponding to the Rhaetian), was a critical timespan marked by a series of global environmental perturbations, most notably the end-Triassic mass extinction event (201.6 Ma). Here, we present palynological, mineralogical, geochemical, and sedimentological data obtained from new core material spanning the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic in the northeastern Paris Basin. Together, these data give new insights into the link between terrestrial and marine extinctions, and their respective driving mechanism. The Boust core (Lorraine, France) provides a complete succession of marginal marine sedimentation. The δ13Corg record from Boust reveals two major C-isotope excursions that, based on the available biostratigraphy, correspond to the Negative-1 (Marshi) and Negative-2 (Spelae) negative isotope excursions. While the Marshi excursion is marked by high abundances of dinoflagellate cysts, the Spelae excursion is marked by an influx of acritarch species. The two excursions bracket an interval of strongly diminished tree pollen abundances and proliferation of fern spore taxa, marking the extinction interval associated with the ETME and forming an equivalent to the Triletes Beds in Germany. This subdivision is confirmed by sedimentological and geochemical results as well as by lithological changes, which are reflecting the development of the depositional environment during the Rhaetian.

Sedimentological, geochemical, and paleontological investigations of the coastline of northeastern Oman have provided the authors with an in-depth insight into Holocene sea levels and climate conditions. The spatial distribution and species assemblage of mangrove ecosystems are analyzed. These ecosystems are sensitive to changes in sea level and precipitation and thus reflect ecological conditions. The close proximity to archaeological sites allows us to draw conclusions regarding human interaction with the mangrove ecosystems. Our interdisciplinary inquiry reveals that the mangrove ecosystems along the east coast of Oman collapsed ~6000 cal yr BP on a decadal scale. There is no sedimentological evidence for a mid-Holocene sea-level highstand. The ecosystem collapse was not caused by sea-level variation or anthropogenic interferences; rather, it was the consequence of reduced precipitation values related to a southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. This resulted in a decrease of freshwater input and an increase in soil salinity. Further, the aridification of the area caused increased deflation and silting up of the lagoons.

In southern Eurasia recurrent phases of aridization, dust source extension and enhanced Aeolian sedimentation alternated with moister intervals, promoting reduced deflation areas and dust accumulation in the context of late Pleistocene climate changes. Weathering and soil forming intensity in this greater region are, hence, mainly governed by fluctuations in the balance between dust supply and moisture availability. Among the hitherto known sections, the Toshan loess-soil sequence (LPS) represents a key site due to the quality of the record and the multitude of available data giving detailed insights into the timing and magnitude of dust accumulation and soil formation of the region. To elucidate these dynamics for much of the past 130.000 years bulk mineralogical and geochemical data are presented supplemented by a high resolution magnetic susceptibility record and by the results of a detailed micromorphological study of loess at Toshan. The last interglacial Luvisol/Phaeozem-like (∼MIS 5e) and the early glacial interstadial steppic palaeosols (∼MIS 5 c and a) are characterized by gradually increasing grain-size and decreasing degrees in decomposition of micaceous and mafic minerals. Pronounced feldspar weathering is detected in the last interglacial and modern soils only, which formed under reduced or absent dust deposition on penultimate and last glacial loess, respectively (postsedimentary). The overall pedosedimentary conditions correspond to large scale trends of increasing drought, dust accumulation and wind strength in southern Eurasia in relation to decreasing moisture availability towards the early Pleniglacial (∼MIS 4), causing soil formation under ongoing dust deposition (synsedimentary). Similar intervals of synsedimentary soil formation are recorded during the interglacial/interstadial-stadial transitions of the early glacial and during pleniglacial (∼MIS 4 to 2) interstadials. The latter are marked by gradual increases in magnetic susceptibility, colour and decreasing texture. Conversely, silicate weathering could not be detected, suggesting that grain-size fluctuations are a primary feature. Thus, windy and arid pleniglacial conditions in southern Eurasia were interrupted by intermittent phases of synsedimentary soil formation, in response to short-lived and relatively moist interstadials. Although the interrelation of these incipient soils, throughout southern Eurasia is afflicted with considerable restrictions, the oscillatory pattern of the Toshan LPS bears great similarity with millennial-scale oscillations recorded in limnic archives of western Asia.

Gamma spectrometric field measurements may provide high resolution information on topsoil texture. Yet, calibrations for the estimation of texture data usually have to be done site-specifically. The lack of site-independent calibrations thus limits the easy and universal use of proximal gamma-ray sensing in soil mapping and precision agriculture. Our objective was to develop a study site-independent prediction model for topsoil texture from gamma-ray spectra. We surveyed ten study sites across Germany with 417 reference samples (291 for calibration, 126 for test set-validation), providing soils from a broad range of parent materials and with widely varying soil texture. First, study site-specific models were calibrated by a linear regression approach. These models provided reliable estimations of sand, silt, and clay for most of the study sites. Second, study site-independent models were calibrated via i) linear regression and ii) support vector machines (SVM), the latter being mathematical methods of data pattern recognition. Based on the non-linear relationship between gamma spectrum and soil texture, which varied widely between the different parent materials the linear models are not appropriate for satisfactory soil texture prediction (averaged R2 of 0.73 for sand, 0.61 for silt, and 0.18 for clay and averaged absolute prediction errors of 9 to 5%, respectively). In contrast, the SVM calibrated prediction models revealed reliable performance also for site-independent calibrations. With the non-linear SVM approach we were able to include all sites in one single prediction model for each texture fraction although the different mineralogical composition of their parent materials led to complex and partly opposing relationships between gamma features and soil texture. Site-independent predictions via SVM were often even better than site-specific linear regression models. The site-independent SVM calibrated predictions yielded an averaged R2 of 0.96 (sand), 0.93 (silt), and 0.78 (clay), and corresponding averaged absolute prediction errors of 2 to 4%, respectively. To summarize, (i) non-linear prediction models are a feasible approach for capable site-independent texture estimations across a wide range of soils and (ii) gamma spectrometry-based texture predictions are a valuable input for applications that require highly resolved texture information at low costs and efforts.

The Arbreda Cave provides a detailed archaeological record of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic and is a key site for studying human occupation and cultural transitions in NE Iberia. Recently, studies of lake archives and archaeological sites presented new evidence on climate changes in NE Iberia correlating with Heinrich events. It, therefore, needs to be determined whether climate signals can be identified in the cave sequence of Arbreda, and if so, whether these signals can be correlated with stratigraphic indicators suggesting the continuity or discontinuity of human occupation. We conducted a high-resolution sedimentological and geochemical study, including micromorphological investigations, to shed light on stratigraphy, processes of sediment accumulation and post-depositional alteration in the cave. Seven major sediment units were distinguished which partly correlate with archaeological levels. The lower part of the sequence including Mousterian levels J and K consists of fluvial deposits truncated by a sharp erosional disconformity between Mousterian levels J and I. Strong enrichment with phosphorus and strontium reflect zoogenic inputs. The transition from Mousterian to Archaic Aurignacian in levels I and H, respectively, is reflected by more gradual changes in colour, grain size and geochemical composition. However, a peak in potentially wind-blown particles (40–125 μm in diameter) reflects higher aeolian input, and banded microstructure suggests reworking of sediments at the interface. Both properties correlate with low density of finds suggesting low intensity of human occupation related to a dry spell. More arid conditions than during the Holocene are indicated for the Gravettian to Solutrean levels. These findings are in agreement with previous palaeoclimatic interpretations as based on palaeontological proxies. The detailed multi-proxy analyses of the sequence adds to our understanding on sediment accumulation and alteration in the Arbreda Cave. The transition from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic probably includes a gap in human occupation. Assessing the significance and duration of this gap and correlating the climate signal requires three-dimensional reconstructions of find densities and more reliable geochronological control.

Highlights: • Multiproxy record from S Ethiopia extends knowledge about environment and climate of past 116,000 yrs during human expansion. • Hydroclimate during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 was much more variable (frequency and amplitude) than during MIS 3 and 4. • Earth system models and model simulations of intermediate complexity emulate corresponding amplitude shifts in hydroclimate. • Environment was arid during MIS 3 and 4, but permanent lake water bodies existed as inferred from our biological proxies. Abstract: Archaeological findings, numerical human dispersal models and genome analyses suggest several time windows in the past 200 kyr (thousands of years ago) when anatomically modern humans (AMH) dispersed out of Africa into the Levant and/or Arabia. From close to the key hominin site of Omo-Kibish, we provide near continuous proxy evidence for environmental changes in lake sediment cores from the Chew Bahir basin, south Ethiopia. The data show highly variable hydroclimate conditions from 116 to 66 kyr BP with rapid shifts from very wet to extreme aridity. The wet phases coincide with the timing of the North African Humid Periods during MIS5, as defined by Nile discharge records from the eastern Mediterranean. The subsequent record at Chew Bahir suggests stable regional hydrological setting between 58 and 32 kyr (MIS4 and 3), which facilitated the development of more habitable ecosystems, albeit in generally dry climatic conditions. This shift, from more to less variable hydroclimate, may help account for the timing of later dispersal events of AMH out of Africa.

New sediment cores were recovered from two sites in the central part of Lake Iznik with the overall aim of reconstructing past environmental conditions of the Marmara region. The composite profile presented here, IZN09/LC2&LC3, encompasses the late Pleistocene to Holocene transition (c. 36 ka cal BP) which is the longest lacustrine record in this region obtained to date. A lithostratigraphical and geochronological framework builds the basis to establish a composite section for first inferences on the paleo Lake Iznik. The recovered sedimentary record was divided into five stratigraphic units which can be correlated between the different coring locations. The proposed age-depth model is based on eleven 14C dates (eight radiocarbon-dated levels) and two tephra layers, supported by three OSL ages. The modeled age distribution of the Ca/Ti ratio and magnetic susceptibility express variations in the carbonate accumulation in balance with clastic sediment input. Starting from the end of MIS 3 with high clastic input, Lake Iznik passed through a low lake-level during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), delineated by a sublitoral sedimentary facies, and reduced sedimentation rates. After c. 18 ka cal BP, the onset of primary carbonate deposition might be linked to meltwater inflow into the lake as well as onset of lake productivity. From this time onward, there is a gradual increase in carbonate accumulation punctuated by the occurrence of an iron-sulfidic layer which coincides with the Younger Dryas event. At the early Holocene, the lake presents a minimum level as reflected by the maximum carbonate production, followed by a lake level rise at c. 9 ka cal BP when it reached a level similar to the modern situation.

The Marmara region is a key area to investigate the interconnection and environmental changes between the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean related to climate patterns. Lake Iznik is an oligohaline lake located in the southeast of the Marmara Sea. To decipher the long-term signals recorded in the sediment column requires better understanding of the processes in the modern lake environs. Seasonal limnological investigations were paired with geochemical and sedimentological analyses. Lake Iznik is an alkaline, warm monomictic lake. During warm seasons, a thermocline is established between 15 m and 20 m water depth. Anaerobic bottom water is mixed during spring. Surface water currents became visible during a whiting event in the summer, corresponding with spatial accumulation patterns found in geochemical proxies of the surface sediment.

Magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry, mineralogy and palynology of sediments from Lake Iznik in Northwestern Anatolia, Turkey, provide a 4700 year record of climatic trends and events. The measured proxies allow a reconstruction of variations in humid/dry periods and lake level changes. The Lake Iznik sedimentary sequence points to an oscillating trend of humid periods interrupted by rapid climate change (RCC) to arid periods. Especially abrupt lithologic and geochemical changes at 4.2 and 3.3 ka calBP may outline intense droughts, which extremely lowered the lake level. For the last 2000 years, the effects of the Roman warm period, Dark Age cold period, Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age are recorded within Lake Iznik sediments. Besides many similarities of local climatic periods with other records from the Eastern Mediterranean, there are also differences indicating the complex pattern of the climate in the region.

The identification of past connection routes between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, other than the traditional one through to the Bosphorus Strait, would be of considerable interest to the international scientific community. Nazik et al. (Geo-Mar Lett 31:75–86 (2011) doi: 10.1007/s00367-010-0216-9 ) suggest the possibility of two alternative waterway connections via lakes Sapanca and Iznik. Their Black Sea to Sea of Marmara multi-connection hypothesis, which is based on undated marine fossils collected in both lakes from surficial grab samples, conflicts with many earlier studies. In this contribution, the hypothesis and the underlying data are discussed in the light of previous tectonic, sedimentological and limnological findings showing that it is impossible to have had marine connections through lakes Sapanca and Iznik during the last 11.5 ka. Global sea-level trends and tectonic uplift rates would accommodate a connection between the Sea of Marmara and Lake Iznik in the middle Pleistocene. Uplift rates for the northern block of the North Anatolian Fault, when compared with the global sea-level curve, clearly indicate that there cannot have been a connection through the Izmit Gulf–Lake Sapanca–Sakarya Valley for at least the past 500 ka. Moreover, borehole sediments along the western shores of Lake Sapanca, which reach down to the bedrock, do not contain any marine fossils.

Lake Van is the fourth largest terminal lake in the world (volume 607 km(3), area 3570 km(2), maximum depth 460 m), extending for 130 km WSW-ENE on the Eastern Anatolian High Plateau, Turkey. The sedimentary record of Lake Van, partly laminated, has the potential to obtain a long and continuous continental sequence that covers several glacial-interglacial cycles (ca 500 kyr). Therefore, Lake Van is a key site within the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) for the investigation of the Quaternary climate evolution in the Near East ('PALEOVAN'). As preparation for an ICDP drilling campaign, a site survey was carried out during the past years. We collected 50 seismic profiles with a total length of similar to 850 km to identify continuous undisturbed sedimentary sequences for potential ICDP locations. Based on the seismic results, we cored 10 different locations to water depths of up to 420 m. Multidisciplinary scientific work at positions of a proposed ICDP drill site included measurements of magnetic susceptibility, physical properties, stable isotopes, XRF scans, and pollen and spores. This core extends back to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), a more extended record than all the other Lake Van cores obtained to date. Both coring and seismic data do not show any indication that the deepest part of the lake (Tatvan Basin, Ahlat Ridge) was dry or almost dry during past times. These results show potential for obtaining a continuous undisturbed, long continental palaeoclimate record. In addition, this paper discusses the potential of 'PALEOVAN' to establish new results on the dynamics of lake level fluctuations, noble gas concentration in pore water of the lake sediment, history of volcanism and volcanic activities based on tephrostratigraphy, and paleoseismic and earthquake activities. ODP sites 1055–1062 recover a bathymetric transect from 1800 to 4800 water depth in the subtropical NW-Atlantic (Carolina Slope, Blake–Bahama Outer Ridge). This sediment drift region is known for high deposition rates (>40 cm/kyr) and offers the excellent opportunity to investigate the history of water mass circulation and chemistry as well as depositional changes during the Quaternary. A late Pleistocene time interval from 250 to 350 kyr (marine isotope stages 8–10) was investigated with centennial- to millennial-scale time resolution. Stable isotope records of benthic foraminifera provide new detailed insights on variations in climate and deep water ventilation. The δ13C records indicate well ventilated North Atlantic water masses between 2200 and 3000 m water depth during the time interval from stage 9 to interstadial 8.5. During the glacial stages 8.4 and 10.2, however, the decrease in δ13C reflects an extension of nutrient-rich Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) up to 2200 m water depth. This is paralleled by a shoaling of the lysocline as indicated by the carbonate records. A comparison between carbonate dissolution proxies points out that the carbonate dissolution at the hemipelagic sites was not only influenced by the different carbonate ion concentration of the water masses (AABW contra North Atlantic Deep Water) but also by the organic carbon flux to the sea floor especially at the shallower sites, whereby the decay of organic matter enhanced carbonate dissolution in the sediments. Additionally the varying depth position and strength of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) plays an important role on the depositional system along the Blake–Bahama Outer Ridge. Comparisons between current intensities as inferred from grain size analyses, sand, and carbonate contents suggest that high intensities of the DWBC during cold stages caused an erosion of the fine carbonate and an enrichment of the sand fraction at shallower depth. During warm stages the main core of DWBC moved to greater depth and allowed the settling of finer material at shallower depth. Synchronously this led to an increased supply of carbonate and extremely high carbonate concentrations below 3500 m water depth.

ODP Sites 1055–1062 on the Blake-Bahama Outer Ridge (BBOR) are characterized by high sedimentation rates, which allow high-resolution analyses to reconstruct the behavior of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) as a function of depth along the BBOR. The ODP sites provide an intermediate and deep water transect from 1800 to 4760 m water depths. We focused on the time interval from 350 to 250 ka (marine isotope stages (MIS) 10.2–8.3). Grain size and magnetic properties were analyzed with centennial- to millennial-scale time resolution. Integrating the results of grain size analyses, lightness, and magnetic properties, the changes in the vertical position and the intensity of the DWBC core were inferred. During glacial periods (MIS 10.2 and 8.4–8.3) the DWBC core was located at around 2200 m water depth, whereas it deepened to 3000 m or more during warm periods (interglacial stage 9.3 and interstadial 8.5). Between these periods, the DWBC core moved to shallower depth (2500–3000 m) and its intensity increased, which generally provided coarser sediments to a broad depth range from 2100 to 4800 m. Furthermore, the magnetic properties imply that the DWBC supplied carbonate material other than terrigenous sediments to the deeper sites during MIS 9. The depositional processes at Site 1062 are characterized by sudden influxes of fine carbonate-rich sediments, which gradually decreased with time. Paleocurrent directions inferred from the direction of the great axis of the magnetic fabric are consistent with the modern topography at Sites 1055, 1056, 1058 and 1060 during the relatively warm period, from stages 9.3 to 8.5. At Site 1062, the deepest site, which exhibits a mud-wave field, the inferred flow direction is parallel to the bathymetric contours during warm periods, while the nearly cross-wave direction seemingly dominated during the other periods. It appears that topographic position may have affected the scattering of azimuth plots. Moreover, there is a possibility that the changes in flow direction correlate with climate changes.

A limnogeological reconnaissance study was carried out on Lake Iznik, located in the southeast of the Marmara region of Turkey, involving a seismic survey and collection of short sediment cores. This lake is located on the middle branch of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), a transform plate boundary between the Eurasian and Anatolian Plates. It is, therefore, tectonically active and offers an opportunity to investigate the interplay of sedimentary and seismo-tectonic processes, as well as climate change and human impact in the region. Short cores of the three sub-basins, maximum length of 35.5 cm, recovered non-laminated, blackish clays and silts with varying amounts of biogenic and minerogenic (allochthonous, autochthonous) material, which documented almost the last 80 years of deposition and environmental history. High sedimentation rates in the deeper core sections are accompanied by changes in land use (conversion of woodland to farmland) in the northern areas of Lake Iznik, which caused the deposition of more weathered material (high K/Na ratios) and higher contents of Mn in the lake. A tendency towards eutrophic conditions within the last 20 years is indicated by high nutrient content (N, TOC, P), decreasing C/N-ratios, and characteristic diatom and cladoceran associations. Also increased pollution is revealed by higher Pb, Cu, and Zn contents and increased supply of human and animal faeces (high coprostanol content) during the last two decades. But simultaneous lower sedimentation rates towards the core tops complicate the reconstruction of recent and past eutrophication and pollution states of Lake Iznik. This requires an extension of the pilot study and deeper sediment cores, to recover non-anthropogenic influenced sediment levels.

Ten ODP sites drilled in a depth transect (2164–4775 m water depth) during Leg 172 recovered high-deposition rate (>20 cm/kyr) sedimentary sections from sediment drifts in the western North Atlantic. For each site an age model covering the past 0.8–0.9 Ma has been developed. The time scales have a resolution of 10–20 kyr and are derived by tuning variations of estimated carbonate content to the orbital parameters precession and obliquity. Based on the similarity in the signature of proxy records and the spectral character of the time series, the sites are divided into two groups: precession cycles are better developed in carbonate records from a group of shallow sites (2164–2975 m water depth, Sites 1055–1058) while the deeper sites (2995–4775 m water depth, Sites 1060–1063) are characterized by higher spectral density in the obliquity band. The resulting time scales show excellent coherence with other dated carbonate and isotope records from low latitudes. Besides the typical Milankovitch cyclicity significant variance of the resulting carbonate time series is concentrated at millennial-scale changes with periods of about 12, 6, 4, 2.5, and 1.5 kyr. Comparisons of carbonate records from the Blake Bahama Outer Ridge and the Bermuda Rise reveal a remarkable similarity in the time and frequency domain indicating a basin-wide uniform sedimentation pattern during the last 0.9 Ma.
