The spread of the invasive ascidian Didemnum vexillum represents a major ecological and economic threat in many parts of the world. Recorded for the first time in Norway in 2020, this species is now established in several localities, often characterized by busy port activities. The new detection and expansion of D. vexillum raise significant concerns in Norway, especially due to the potential extension of its distribution range into higher latitudes. This study presents the results of an in situ monitoring of the growth of eleven D. vexillum colonies in Stavanger between December 2020 and September 2022. Colony growth was calculated from underwater photographs taken approximately once a month. Overall, our findings indicate significant growth of most colonies after 624 days, increasing in size from 78 cm 2 to 1008 cm 2 . Seasonal variations in seawater temperature are a major factor affecting the size and growth of the colonies. Most of the growth occurred during the summer months, when seawater temperature was between 13 °C and 18 °C. A rapid decline in colony growth rates was observed in November, as temperatures dropped below 13 °C, followed by colony regression below ~8 °C. These results therefore confirm the general understanding of D. vexillum as rapidly spreading species, characterized by a high colony growth rate. Its ongoing spread toward northern Norway is likely to have negative impacts on key coastal ecosystems (e.g., kelp forests, rhodolith beds, seagrass meadows), as well as on several industries critical to Norway's economy (e.g., oil industry, aquaculture, fisheries). Speckle is the main obstacle for the use of laser light sources in projection technology. This paper focuses on speckle suppression by the reduction of temporal coherence which is provided by the broadband laser light. The investigation of the effect of laser spectrum width and multiple lasers on speckle contrast is discussed. A broader spectrum width of the laser light is attained by the use of multiple semiconductor laser diodes of the broad area type. Measurements of speckle contrast with and without angle diversity are performed for two and four laser diodes. The measurement of speckle contrast for a single laser diode is also presented for comparison. The experimental results show that multiple laser diodes provide lower speckle contrast as compared to a single laser diode. In addition, it is also shown in this paper that the wavelength distribution of independent laser diodes has an effect on speckle contrast. Two different types of blue laser diodes, Nichia NUB802T and Nichia NUB801E, which have slightly different central wavelengths, were used for the measurements. Four laser diodes with a combination of two types of laser diodes offer better speckle contrast reduction than four laser diodes of the same type due to an effective broader spectrum. Additional speckle contrast reduction is achieved through the angle diversity by using a dynamic deformable mirror.

Despite of much effort and significant progress in recent years, speckle removal is still a challenge for laser projection technology. In this paper, speckle reduction by dynamic deformable mirror was investigated. Time varying independent speckle patterns were generated due to the angle diversity introduced by the dynamic mirror, and these speckle patterns were averaged out by the camera or human eyes, thus reducing speckle contrast in the final image. The speckle reduction by the wavelength diversity of the lasers was also studied. Both broadband lasers and narrowband laser were used for experiment. It is experimentally shown that speckle suppression can be attained by the widening of the spectrum of the lasers. Lower speckle contrast reduction was attained by the wavelength diversity for narrowband laser compared to the broadband lasers. This method of speckle reduction is suitable in laser projectors for wide screen applications where high power laser illumination is needed.

In vivo fluorescence lifetimes of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) were obtained from the green microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis under normal and nutrient-stressed conditions (green stage and red stage, respectively), using two-photon excitation provided by a laser generating pulses in the femtosecond range, and a Leica microscope setup. Analysis of the fluorescence lifetime decay curve revealed two separate lifetime components in all our measurements. A short-lifetime component for chl-a of ~250 ps was completely dominant, contributing more than 90% of overall intensity in both green-stage and red-stage cells. Green-stage cells inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl-urea (DCMU) displayed a significant chl-a lifetime increase for the short component. However, this was not the case for red-stage cells, in which DCMU inhibition did not significantly affect the lifetime. For green-stage cells, we found a short NADPH (free) lifetime component at ~150 ps to be completely dominating, but for red-stage cells, a longer component (protein bound) at ~3 ns contributed as much as 35% of the total intensity. We hypothesize that the long lifetime component of NADPH is connected to photoprotection in the cells and coupled to production of astaxanthin. DCMU does not seem to affect the fluorescence lifetimes of NADPH.

The full Mueller matrix was measured to obtain the polarization state of the scattered light for a variety of algae with different shapes, wall compositions, sizes, and refractive indices. The experimental setup was a multiple laser Mueller matrix ellipsometer, by which measurements were performed for scattering angles from 16° to 160° sampled at every second degree for wavelengths of 473 nm and 532 nm. Previously, the polarization of light scattered from microalgae was investigated only for a few species, and the Mueller matrix was found to have little variation between the species. In our work a total of 11 algal species were investigated, representing diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophorids, green algae, and a cryptophyte. The selection of species was made to obtain high variability in shape, size, cell wall, and refractive index. As in previous investigations, very small variations were found between species for most of the Mueller matrix elements, but noticeable variations were found for M(11), (M(12)+M(21))/2 and (M(33)+M(44))/2.
