The article is devoted to the issues of correlation between the literary source and the musical drama. The opera “The Idiot”, finished by the Russian composer Mieczysław Weinberg in 1986 and performed on the leading Russian stages in the creative season of 2016-2017, has become the object of scientific interest. The libretto written by A.V. Medvedev is based on the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky of the same name. Musical studies of Dostoevsky’s works started emerging during the life of the writer. It was expressed in the use of musical terminology in the criticism and scientific studies concerning literary works by F.M. Dostoevsky. In 1916, S.S. Prokofiev created the opera “The Gambler”, which became the first opera adaptation of the writer’s prose, congenial with the literary source. Since then, the creative heritage of the author of “Demons” has repeatedly attracted composers’ attention. Musical adaptations of Dostoevsky’s literary works today comprise more than seventy compositions in various genres. Operas are of particular interest, since dramatic and musical texts are equally important in conveying the implications of the writer’s novels. The specific features of the interaction of prose and musical drama in this article are revealed using the intertextual analysis methods, which highlight the relevance of the topic addressed. The libretto is studied as an important component of the opera in the light of the trends of the modern science of music. The techniques of the dramatist’s work with the literary source are considered. The libretto texts that are not introduced in the novel and their sources are revealed; the logics of the reference of the “The Idiot” opera creators to Dostoevsky’s meta-text and the legacy of other authors in the context of artistic conception are explained. The article determines the functions of the characters of the first and second action plan, gives their brief description and indicates their role in the dramaturgy of the opera

The paper is devoted to one of the most famous works by Giuseppe Verdi – “Requiem”. The author traces the history of its creation, associated with the death of Alessandro Manzoni, the renowned writer of Risorgimento era, whose novel “The Betrothed” became a milestone in the history of Italian literature and made a huge impression on young G. Verdi. In this connection, the authors of the paper for the first time ever in Russian musicology put forward and justify the idea that the Manzoni’s novel images are close to the Verdi’s requiem mass, by presenting analytical observations of literary and musical works. Dramatic composition of the novel and Requiem is based on the interaction of several image lines: lyrical-psychological, heroic-patriotic and religious. In addition, the historical parallels are found between the time of the novel, and the era when “the maestro of Italian revolution” lived. The authors also explained the reasons for which in the 19th century it became possible for the related arts to penetrate into the spiritual composition Статья посвящена одному из известнейших произведений Джузеппе Верди «Реквием». Прослеживается история его создания, связанная со смертью писателя эпохи Рисорджименто Алессандро Мандзони, чей роман «Обрученные» стал важной вехой в истории развития итальянской литературы и произвел на молодого Верди огромное впечатление. В связи с этим авторы статьи впервые в отечественном музыкознании выдвигают и обосновывают идею об образной близости романа Мандзони и заупокойной мессы Верди, излагая аналитические наблюдения над литературным и музыкальным произведениями. Драматургия романа и «Реквиема» основывается на взаимодействии нескольких образных сфер: лирико-психологической, героико-патриотической и религиозной. Кроме того, обнаруживаются исторические параллели между временем действия в романе и эпохой, когда жил «маэстро итальянской революции»; объясняются причины, по которым в XIX веке стало возможным проникновение в духовный жанр закономерностей смежных видов искусств

The article dedicated to one of the most famous operas of the world repertoire – “La Traviata” by G. Verdi, was written by an opera singer who has been singing Violetta’s part on the stages of Russia and the world for more than 20 years, and a musicologist – a specialist in the field of operatic drama. The authors synthesize a historical approach with a practical one, cover cultural and biographical contexts of creation of the opera, explain the reasons for choosing a relevant and highly courageous story for the Verdi’s opera times, and set out observations of the figurative-dramaturgical specificity of the work. The authors study the attitude of the composer to the current state of the Italian theatre and the reasons that prompted him to turn to the story of the drama by Alexandre Dumas. In the course of discussions, G. Verdi’s letters, research works in the field of cultural studies and musicology are presented as arguments. The authors also note peculiarities of the interpretation of the title role of the opera “La Traviata” played by Maria Callas and Anna Netrebko, whose interpretations were justified, masterfully crafted and brilliantly realized. The article accentuates the main vocal and dramatic complexity of interpretation of the character of Violetta and ways to overcome it Статья, посвященная одной из самых известных опер мирового репертуара «Травиате» Дж. Верди, написана оперной певицей, более 20 лет исполняющей партию Виолетты на сценах России и мира, и музыковедом – специалистом в области оперной драматургии. Авторы синтезируют исторический подход с практическим, освещают культурологический и биографический контексты создания оперы, объясняют причины выбора актуального и чрезвычайно смелого сюжета для оперной сцены времен Верди, а также излагают наблюдения над образно-драматургической спецификой произведения. Рассматривается отношение композитора к современному состоянию итальянского театра и причины, побудившие его обратиться к сюжету драмы А. Дюма. В ходе рассуждений в качестве аргументов привлекаются письма Дж. Верди, исследования в области культурологии и музыковедения. Отмечаются особенности интерпретации заглавной партии оперы «Травиата» Марией Каллас и Анной Нетребко, чья трактовка представляется оправданной, мастерски продуманной и блестяще реализованной. Акцентируются основные сложности вокального и драматического воплощения образа Виолетты и пути их преодоления

“The Brothers Karamazov” opera by Alexander Smelkov, a Petersburg composer, who worked in close collaboration with Yuri Dimitrin, a playwright, is viewed through the prism of “the literary source – the opera libretto” relation. The texts of the opera and the novel are subject to a comparative analysis for the first time. This analysis results in the conclusions about what changes were made in the literary source by the authors of the opera-mystery. Two acts connected with the images of Grushenka and Katerina Ivanovna are given a special focus. The solo text characterizing the opera female characters are written by Yu. Dimitrin and Z. Gippius. The article dwells on the reasons of using “other” texts in the libretto as well as the meaning of the borrowings helping to reveal the idea of the authors of the opera. The theme “in the spirit of Tchaikovsky” in the scene with Grushenka gives rise to the analogy with the opera “Eugene Onegin”, A.S. Pushkin’s novel, and F.M. Dostoevsky’s Pushkin speech. There are interesting parallels between the circumstances of Z.N. Gippius’ personal life and Katerina Ivanovna’s fate. The conclusion is drawn that the composer and the librettist’s deep knowledge relates to understanding of literary criticism and reflects the writer’s creative heritage Опера петербургского композитора Александра Смелкова «Братья Карамазовы», созданная в сотрудничестве с драматургом Юрием Димитриным, рассматривается сквозь призму соотношения «литературный первоисточник – оперное либретто». На основе сравнительного анализа оперного и романного текстов, предпринимаемого впервые, делаются выводы о том, какие изменения были внесены авторами оперы-мистерии в литературный первоисточник. Особенно отмечаются два номера, связанные с образами Грушеньки и Катерины Ивановны. Текст сольных характеристик женских персонажей оперы принадлежит Ю. Димитрину и З. Гиппиус. Раскрываются причины, обусловившие привлечение «чужих» текстов при создании либретто, а также суть заимствований, помогающих раскрыть авторский замысел создателей оперы. Благодаря появлению в сцене Грушеньки темы «в духе Чайковского» возникают аналогии с оперой «Евгений Онегин», романом А.С. Пушкина и Пушкинской речью Ф.М. Достоевского. Обнаруживаются интересные параллели между обстоятельствами личной жизни З.Н. Гиппиус и судьбой Катерины Ивановны. Делается вывод о глубинных знаниях композитора и либреттиста, которые касаются не только понимания сути литературного первоисточника, но и становятся рефлексией над всем творческим наследием писателя
