Abstract

Microgrids are constituted of interconnected loads and dispersed energy resources. They increase the reliability of the power supply, decrease the cost of the per unit energy and support the green environment concept. Microgrids have gained importance due to their ability to deliver reliable energy and operate in both grid-connected and off-grid/island modes. Renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind can be connected to the microgrid system to generate green energy. An electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) can be deployed in microgrids powered by renewable energy sources. An effective way to handle the rapidly rising load demand of electric vehicles (EVs) is to integrate EV recharge stations into microgrids. Due to the intermittent nature of solar PV and EV load's reliability, an evaluation of microgrids becomes challenging. Assessment of the components’ failure and their impact on the system reliability is proposed using different methods. Reliability Block Diagram (RBD), Markov Reliability Modeling (MRM) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) - Monte Carlo simulation are used for the Reliability Modeling of a community microgrid considering EVCS as a critical load. The mean time to failure (MTTF) is computed for the entire microgrid which includes PV, wind and fuel cell systems integrated into the grid with associated power electronic devices, transmission lines, transformers and point of common coupling (PCC). MATLAB software was used to program and study the reliability aspects of the microgrid. Using the FTA MCS technique and grid functions for 45 years with 20 % reliability, significant results were obtained in terms of a MTTF rate of 26.16 years.

Abstract

The depleting fossil fuel and growing environmental concern have opened the doors for clean and green energy development using renewable energy sources. Also, the growing oil demand and carbon emissions have created a huge scope for Electric Vehicle (EV) usage across the world which has resulted in blooming EV market. Photovoltaic (PV) powered EV charging can substantially reduce the carbon foot prints when compared to the conventional utility grid based EV charging. The amalgamation of solar power and EV charging is one of the best methods in sustainable development for EV market. Recent statistics suggest that usage of EVs in different cities in India has proliferated and the development of the charging infrastructure is a big challenge for the densely populated country. Firstly, theoretical demand model and stochastic model for EV traffic and resource utilization pattern is developed. Secondly, the optimal configuration and techno-economic assessment of Solar powered EV Charging Station (EVCS) in microgrid is analyzed for four different Indian cities (Shillong, Bengaluru, Jaipur and Kashmir) with varied solar radiation conditions. Lastly, the environment benefits of solar PV powered EVCS are assessed and analyzed. The results demonstrate that the optimal configuration and investment efficiency in each urban area is greatly affected by the solar irradiation and feed-in-tariff (FIT) price of rooftop solar power. Kashmir with high solar irradiation conditions can invest in the solar EVCS compared to the other cities.

The Tutorial presents the theoretical aspects of photothermal beam deflection spectrometry (BDS) in skimming configuration based on the complex ray theory. After a brief introduction on photothermal spectroscopy, an abridged review of the literature highlighting the theoretical building blocks and its diversified applications is given. The complex ray theory-based 1D and 2D models for evaluating thermophysical, optical, transport, and structural parameters are discussed in detail.
