Cytotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic contaminants, such as heavy metals and radionuclides, have become an alarming environmental concern globally, especially for developed and developing nations. Moreover, inefficient prevalent wastewater treatment technologies combined with increased industrial activity and modernization has led to increase in the concentration of toxic metals and radioactive components in the natural water bodies. However, for the improvement of ecosystem of rivers, lakes, and other water sources different physicochemical methods such as membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, activated carbon adsorption, electrocoagulation, and other electrochemical treatment are employed, which are uneconomical and insufficient for the complete abatement of these emerging pollutants. Therefore, the application of bioremediation employing aquatic macrophytes and microphytes have gained considerable importance owing to the benefits of cost-effectiveness, eco-friendly, and higher energy efficiency. Thus, the present review aims to enlighten the readers on the potential application of algae, cyanobacteria, plant, and other aquatic micro- and macrophytes for the elimination of carcinogenic metals and radioactive isotopes from wastewater. Additionally, the use of transgenic plants, genetically modified species, algal-bacterial symbiosis for the enhancement of removal efficiency of mutagenic contaminants are also highlighted. Furthermore, species selection based on robustness, mechanism of different pathways for heavy metal and radionuclide detoxification are elucidated in this review article.

Bryozoans are common commensal on hard surfaces and cover slow-moving animals like molluscans, sea turtles, brachyuran crabs, and horseshoe crabs. A total of six species of bryozoans belonging to four genus under three families of order Cheilostomatida were recorded encrusting on the carapaces of horseshoe crabs collected from Indian Sundarbans along the east coast of India and two among them, viz., Biflustra savartii (Audouin, 1826) and Sinoflustra arabianensis (Menon & Nair, 1975) are reported for the first time. Additionally, Jellyella tuberculata (Bosc, 1802) is reported for the first time from West Bengal coastal waters, previously known only from the Odisha coast of India. Both male and female horseshoe crabs were found to have been encrusted with bryozoan mats, although adequately not known about the life stages of their encrustation.

Two Polygonaceae weeds, Rumex dentatus L. and Polygonum glabrum Willd. are abundant in wheat- and rice-fields, respectively, in India. Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a biocontrol agent of these two weeds. The importance of long-chain alkanes and free fatty acids present in leaf surface waxes of these weeds was assessed as short-range attractant and ovipositional stimulant in G. placida females. Extraction, TLC, GC-MS and GC-FID analyses demonstrated 19 n-alkanes from n-C14 to n-C35 and 14 free fatty acids from C12:0 to C22:0 in leaf surface waxes. Hentriacontane was predominant among alkanes in both weeds, while oleic acid and docosanoic acid were predominant among free fatty acids in R. dentatus and P. glabrum, respectively. Females of G. placida were attracted toward one leaf equivalent surface wax of both weeds against the control solvent (petroleum ether) in a short Y-tube olfactometer bioassay. But, the insect could not differentiate between one leaf equivalent surface wax of R. dentatus and P. glabrum, indicating that both weed leaves were equally attractive in females. A synthetic blend of either 2.44, 35.57 and 23.58 μg ml−1 of octadecane, heptacosane and nonacosane, respectively, resembling the amounts present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of R. dentatus or 4.08, 19.54 and 23.58 μg ml−1 of octadecane, palmitoleic acid and docosanoic acid, respectively, resembling the amounts present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of P. glabrum acted as short-range attractant and ovipositional stimulant in G. placida. These results could be a basis for host plant specificity of the biocontrol agent.

Highly efficient precision gene editing is ultimately a desirable technology, but implementation remains challenging, especially in plants. Here, we tested a novel CRISPR-Cas-based tool for precision gene replacement in plants employing a microhomology-mediated end joining (MMEJ) mechanism. The MMEJ-mediated precise gene replacement employing 20-bp microhomology MMEJ donors (~100 bp lengths) and a cNHEJ inhibitor, NU7441, produced high targeted editing efficiencies, up to 1.60 ± 0.14, 4.47 ± 1.98, and 8.98 ± 4.73 % in tomato, lettuce, and cabbage, respectively. Our data also revealed the critical impacts of the microhomology length and NU7441 concentration on MMEJ-based precision gene editing in plants.

Data on neonatal COVID-19 are limited to the immediate postnatal period, with a primary focus on vertical transmission in inborn infants. This study was aimed to assess the characteristics and outcome of COVID-19 in outborn neonates.All neonates admitted to the paediatric emergency from August 1 to December 31, 2020, were included in the study. SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription- (RT)-PCR test was done on oro/nasopharyngeal specimens obtained at admission. The clinical characteristics and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative neonates were compared and the diagnostic accuracy of a selective testing policy was assessed.A total of 1225 neonates were admitted during the study period, of whom SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR was performed in 969. The RT-PCR test was positive in 17 (1.8%). Mean (standard deviation) gestation and birth weight of SARS-CoV-2-infected neonates were 35.5 (3.2) wk and 2274 (695) g, respectively. Most neonates (11/17) with confirmed COVID-19 reported in the first two weeks of life. Respiratory distress (14/17) was the predominant manifestation. Five (5/17, 29.4%) SARS-CoV-2 infected neonates died. Neonates with COVID-19 were at a higher risk for all-cause mortality [odds ratio (OR): 3.1; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1-8.9, P=0.03]; however, mortality did not differ after adjusting for lethal malformation (OR: 2.4; 95% CI: 0.7-8.7). Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative likelihood ratios (95% CI) of selective testing policy for SARS-CoV-2 infection at admission was 52.9 (28.5-76.1), 83.3 (80.7-85.6), 82.8 (80.3-85.1), 3.17 (1.98-5.07), and 0.56 (0.34-0.93) per cent, respectively.SARS-CoV-2 positivity rate among the outborn neonates reporting to the paediatric emergency and tested for COVID-19 was observed to be low. The selective testing policy had poor diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing COVID-19 from non-COVID illness.

Solvent-free algal cell lysis using fungal enzyme for enhanced lipid recovery diminishes per unit production cost of algal biodiesel. In this investigation, a triple chamber photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (PMFC) was fabricated, where positive potential was imposed in the extraction chamber to draw the negatively charged lipid ions from the cathodic chamber. Under optimum imposed potential of + 3.0 V (vs standard hydrogen electrode) and with 3.5% (v/v) dosage of fungal enzyme in to the algal consortium of cathodic chamber, a maximum of 79.0% of lipid was recovered. Background The presence of metabolic syndrome (MS) is associated with increased disease severity in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) associated with or without MS may be related to increased morbidity and mortality in COVID-19, but large Indian studies are lacking. The present study was carried out to assess the impact of NAFLD on the clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 infection. Methods All patients with COVID-19 hospitalized at a tertiary care hospital in eastern India from April 4 to December 31, 2020, were included in the study. Patients who underwent non-contrast CT (NCCT) chest were evaluated for the presence of hepatic steatosis based on a validated criterion liver attenuation (HU) value lower than the spleen, absolute liver attenuation lower than 40 HU, and liver to spleen attenuation ratio less than 1. Patients were divided into two groups, those with or without fatty liver. Baseline characteristics including age, sex, liver function tests, and outcomes including duration of hospital stay and mortality were compared. Results A total of 6003 COVID-19-positive patients were admitted during the study period. Of these patients, 214 children (18 years) with COVID-19 infection were excluded. One hundred and eight patients with a history of significant ethanol abuse were excluded from the analysis. NCCT scan was not done in 1698 patients. Finally, 3983 patients were included in the study. They were divided into two groups depending on the presence or absence of NAFLD. Of the 3983 patients, 814 (20.4%) had NAFLD. Overall in-hospital mortality among the study group was 6.4%. The mortality rate among patients with NAFLD was 6.7% while that in patients without fatty liver was 6% (P=0.381). Similarly, the mean duration of hospital stay was also comparable between both the groups (10.63±7.2days vs 10.65±6.6 days;P=0.66). Prevalence of NAFLD was similar in survivors and non-survivors; 759 of 2981 patients (25.4%) and 55 of 188 patients 29.2% (P=0.381), respectively. On univariate analysis, male sex, older age, elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) along with low serum albumin and low absolute eosinophil counts (AEC) were associated with higher mortality. However, on multivariate analysis, only older age, male sex, and low albumin levels were associated with higher mortality. Surprisingly, a sub-group analysis showed that females without NAFLD were at a higher risk of mortality than those with fatty liver (4.9% vs 12.3%; P=0.006). Similarly, patients with lower AST levels had higher mortality compared to patients with significantly elevated AST levels (more than two times the upper limit of normal (ULN)), irrespective of the presence of fatty liver. Conclusions The prevalence of fatty liver in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) infected patients is similar to the general population in India, the presence of which is not a predictor of severe disease. However, mortality is higher in males and elderly patients.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a unique pathogen with the ability to transfer a portion of its DNA, the T-DNA, to other organisms. The role of DNA repair genes in Agrobacterium transformation remains controversial. In order to understand if the host DNA repair response and dynamics was specific to bacterial factors such as Vir proteins, T-DNA, and oncogenes, we profiled the expression and promoter methylation of various DNA repair genes. These genes belonged to nucleotide excision repair (NER), base excision repair (BER), mismatch repair (MMR), homologous recombination (HR), and non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) pathways. We infected Arabidopsis plants with different Agrobacterium strains that lacked one or more of the above components so that the influence of the respective factors could be analysed. Our results revealed that the expression and promoter methylation of most DNA repair genes was affected by Agrobacterium, and it was specific to Vir proteins, T-DNA, oncogenes, or the mere presence of bacteria. In order to determine if Agrobacterium induced any transgenerational epigenetic effect on the DNA repair gene promoters, we studied the promoter methylation in two subsequent generations of the infected plants. Promoters of at least three genes, CEN2, RAD51, and LIG4 exhibited transgenerational memory in response to different bacterial factors. We believe that this is the first report of Agrobacterium-induced transgenerational epigenetic memory of DNA repair genes in plants. In addition, we show that Agrobacterium induces short-lived DNA strand breaks in Arabidopsis cells, irrespective of the presence or absence of virulence genes and T-DNA.

The knowledge on the floral and faunal composition of protected areas (PAs) is crucial for formulating suitable conservation plan. In this paper, inventory and species richness of non-marine molluscs of Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary has been made and is for the first time from any PA of West Bengal. A total of 276 specimens belonging to 22 species (10 species of land snails and 12 species of freshwater) of non-marine molluscs (land and freshwater) were collected and examined from this sanctuary. The malacofaunal inventory comprises of nine genera under seven families among land snails and 12 genera & seven families from both gastropods & bivalves under the freshwater forms. As far as species richness is concerned, the family Ariophantidae was found to be dominant among land forms whereas species of the families Thiaridae and Unionidae were dominant among freshwater forms.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a budding technology, where the principles of bioelectrochemical systems are employed to sequester CO2 and concomitantly produce value-added organic chemicals. The inferior production rate of organic chemicals in MES is a major roadblock in the real field application of this novel technology, which needs to be overcome by applying biocompatible metal-based cathode catalysts. Therefore in the present investigation, Rh and TiO2 microparticles were applied as cathode catalyst in MES and performance was compared based on production rate of organic chemicals and electrochemical parameters. The electrochemical properties of Rh and TiO2 were illustrated by employing cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and reduction in overpotential associated with hydrogen evolution reaction was noticed for TiO2 coated electrode. Moreover, the production rate of acetate was also enhanced by 2.14 and 1.3 times due to the application of TiO2 (MES-Ti) and Rh (MES-Rh), respectively, as cathode catalyst in comparison to the MES operated without any cathode catalyst. Better bacterial attachment and more production of hydrogen were also observed for MES-Ti, which was fundamental to the improved performance of MES-Ti. Therefore, TiO2 can be deliberated as an effective cathode catalyst in MES to escalate its production rate.

Previous studies on endogenous galectin-3 proved its role in the pathogenesis of asthma, heart attack and obesity. Galectin-3 applied therapeutically as gene therapy suppresses the inflammatory response in a rat asthma model thus presenting novel therapeutic approach to the treatment of several diseases. Despite availability of enormous data concerning galectin-3 expression, the mechanisms of regulation of galectin-3 expression are relatively poorly defined. Galectins are either pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory, such as galectin-1, may be employed as anti-inflammatory agents, while others, such as galectin-3, are evidently suitable targets for anti-inflammatory drugs. Investigating galectin-3 in the immune response has demonstrated that this protein displays pro- and anti-inflammatory roles depending on the target cell type, whether galectin-3 is acting exogenously or endogenously, its expression level and other inflammatory factors. It is therefore imperative that all these factors be taken into consideration should galectin-3 be used therapeutically.

Summary Gene editing and/or allele introgression with absolute precision and control appear to be the ultimate goals of genetic engineering. Precision genome editing in plants has been developed through various approaches, including oligonucleotide‐directed mutagenesis (ODM), base editing, prime editing and especially homologous recombination (HR)‐based gene targeting. With the advent of CRISPR/Cas for the targeted generation of DNA breaks (single‐stranded breaks (SSBs) or double‐stranded breaks (DSBs)), a substantial advancement in HR‐mediated precise editing frequencies has been achieved. Nonetheless, further research needs to be performed for commercially viable applications of precise genome editing; hence, an alternative innovative method for genome editing may be required. Within this scope, we summarize recent progress regarding precision genome editing mediated by microhomology‐mediated end joining (MMEJ) and discuss their potential applications in crop improvement.

CRISPR/Cas9-based multiplexed editing of SlHyPRP1 resulted in precise deletions of its functional motif(s), thereby resulting in salt stress-tolerant events in cultivated tomato. Crop genetic improvement to address environmental stresses for sustainable food production has been in high demand, especially given the current situation of global climate changes and reduction of the global food production rate/population rate. Recently, the emerging clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein (Cas)-based targeted mutagenesis has provided a revolutionary approach to crop improvement. The major application of CRISPR/Cas in plant genome editing has been the generation of indel mutations via error-prone nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) repair of DNA DSBs. In this study, we examined the power of the CRISPR/Cas9-based novel approach in the precise manipulation of protein domains of tomato hybrid proline-rich protein 1 (HyPRP1), which is a negative regulator of salt stress responses. We revealed that the precise elimination of SlHyPRP1 negative-response domain(s) led to high salinity tolerance at the germination and vegetative stages in our experimental conditions. CRISPR/Cas9-based domain editing may be an efficient tool to engineer multidomain proteins of important food crops to cope with global climate changes for sustainable agriculture and future food security.

BACKGROUND The viviparous aphid Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a serious threat to the crop yield of Lathyrus sativus L. (Fabaceae), commonly known as grass pea. The synthetic insecticides applied to control this insect pest are not safe for the environment. Hence, it is necessary to find volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from two cultivars [BIO L 212 Ratan (BIO) and Nirmal B-1 (NIR)] of L. sativus plants causing behavioral preference of A. craccivora. RESULTS The VOCs from undamaged (UD), insect-damaged (ID) [plants on which 50 or 100 adults of A. craccivora were fed for 4 h (ID 50 or ID 100)], and mechanically damaged (MD) plants were identified and quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection analyses, respectively. Total VOCs were higher in ID plants compared to UD plants of each cultivar. However, total VOCs were higher in NIR cultivar compared to BIO cultivar for both UD and ID plants. Benzyl alcohol was predominant in volatile extracts of all treatments. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, females showed preference towards volatile extracts of UD, ID, and MD plants of each cultivar compared to the control solvent (CH2 Cl2 ). Insects preferred certain synthetic blends comparable to volatile extracts of UD, ID, and MD plants of each L. sativus cultivar against the control solvent. CONCLUSION Females preferred a synthetic blend of benzyl alcohol, 1,3-diethylbenzene, thymol, and 1-hexadecene at ratios of 142.49: 62.03:1.18:1 dissolved in 25 μL of CH2 Cl2 in olfactometer bioassays, which could be used in developing lures to control this insect pest.

Main conclusion Genome editing offers revolutionized solutions for plant breeding to sustain food production to feed the world by 2050. Therefore, genome-edited products are increasingly recognized via more relaxed legislation and community adoption. Abstract The world population and food production are disproportionally growing in a manner that would have never matched each other under the current agricultural practices. The emerging crisis is more evident with the subtle changes in climate and the running-off of natural genetic resources that could be easily used in breeding in conventional ways. Under these circumstances, affordable CRISPR-Cas-based gene-editing technologies have brought hope and charged the old plant breeding machine with the most energetic and powerful fuel to address the challenges involved in feeding the world. What makes CRISPR-Cas the most powerful gene-editing technology? What are the differences between it and the other genetic engineering/breeding techniques? Would its products be labeled as "conventional" or "GMO"? There are so many questions to be answered, or that cannot be answered within the limitations of our current understanding. Therefore, we would like to discuss and answer some of the mentioned questions regarding recent progress in technology development. We hope this review will offer another view on the role of CRISPR-Cas technology in future of plant breeding for food production and beyond.

Treatment of wastewater prior to its disposal into surface water bodies is imperative and concomitant recovery of value-added products in this process can recover a part of the cost associated with wastewater treatment. In this regard, microalgae have been identified as a potential microorganism that can be cultured employing wastewater as a medium for the sequestration of atmospheric CO2, elimination of coliforms, removal of nutrients and organic matter, and removal of heavy metals, thus treating wastewater. Besides mitigating water pollution and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration, algae are also being utilized as a third-generation feedstock for the production of biofuels and other value-added products, like bioelectricity and antibiotics. This chapter articulates an overview of commonly used microalgal strains for wastewater treatment. Current strategies used for cultivating and harvesting of algae, factors affecting algal growth, nutrient assimilation and scope of biofuel and other valuable production from harvested algae from industrial or domestic wastewater treatment plants are being described in detail.

Background: Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) is chronic neuropathic pain. It is a complication of herpes zoster and negatively impacts the patient’s quality of life and physical, occupational, social and psychosocial abilities due to unceasing pain. As pain management remains the cornerstone in treating such patients, this study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of fixed-dose combination therapy of Pregabalin plus Nortriptyline in PHN. Methods: The study, which was a follow-up, randomised, single-blind, controlled study, included a total of 40 patients who had chronic pain for at least 12 weeks with a Numeric rating scale (NRS) score of 5/10 or above. Group A (n=20) received pregabalin 75 mg plus nortriptyline 10 mg, and group B (n=20) received pregabalin 75 mg for a total of 12 weeks. Pain intensity and severity (using NRS and Global Perceived Effect), pain interference with sleep (using Numeric Rating Scale-Sleep (NRS-Sleep) and Pain Detect Questionnaire (PDQ)), pain quality (using Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI)), and quality of life (QoL) (using Short Form-12 (SF-12) questionnaire) at the end of the first, second, fourth, eighth and twelfth week were measured. Lathyrus sativus L. (Fabaceae) is an important pulse crop of Asia, Europe, and Africa. Infestation by the aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) causes stunted growth of plants and reduces seed production. Females lay nymphs on the leaves and flowers of L. sativus. Hence, it is relevant to study the importance of leaf wax compounds (long-chain alkanes and free fatty acids) from two cultivars [BIO L 212 Ratan (BIO) and Nirmal B-1 (NIR)] of L. sativus as short-range attractant and stimulant for nymph laying in the aphid. The TLC, GC-MS and GC-FID analyses of n-hexane extracts from leaves of two cultivars revealed 18 n-alkanes from n-C15 to n-C36 and 14 free fatty acids from C12:0 to C22:0. Pentadecane was predominant among n-alkanes in both cultivars. Palmitoleic acid and pentadecanoic acid were predominant free fatty acids in leaf waxes of BIO and NIR, respectively. Females were attracted towards leaf waxes of both cultivars compared to the control solvent (n-hexane) in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. A synthetic blend of either pentadecane, tridecanoic acid, and linoleic acid at similar amounts present in one leaf equivalent wax of BIO, or pentadecane, docosane, pentacosane, heptacosane, tritriacontane, and linoleic acid at similar amounts present in one leaf equivalent wax of NIR acted as short-range attractant and stimulated females to lay nymphs. But, the latter blend was more attractive and stimulated females to lay more nymphs than the former blend, and hence, this latter blend could be employed in the development of baited traps in pest management strategies.

Ludwigia adscendens (L.) Hara, Ludwigia parviflora Roxb., and Ludwigia octovalvis (Jacq.) Raven (Onagraceae) are abundant weeds in rice fields in India. These weeds compete with rice for resources in fields and this results in reduction of grain yield. Altica cyanea (Weber) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a biocontrol agent of the three rice‐field weeds. Hence, it is relevant to study host preference of A. cyanea using volatile cues of these three weeds. Therefore, we attempted to identify volatiles from leaves of the three Ludwigia species attracting A. cyanea, which could be used as an attractant during early emergence of the weeds in rice fields. In Y‐tube olfactometer assays, A. cyanea females were more attracted to natural volatiles of plants after 48 h of feeding by adults than to volatiles of undamaged plants. The volatile organic compounds from undamaged plants, and plants after 6 and 48 h of feeding by A. cyanea were identified and quantified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and GC‐flame ionization detection (FID), respectively. In total, 25, 29, and 29 volatile compounds were detected in headspaces of undamaged L. adscendens, L. parviflora, and L. octovalvis, respectively, whereas 32, 35, and 34 compounds, respectively, were detected after 48 h of feeding by A. cyanea. Methyl jasmonate predominated among the volatile compounds in all treatments, but this compound was not attractive to A. cyanea. Females were attracted by synthetic blends of 3‐hexanol, α‐pinene, linalool oxide, and phytol in amounts mimicking those in each of the three Ludwigia species after 48 h of feeding by A. cyanea. The blends mimicking L. adscendens and L. parviflora included geraniol, whereas the blend mimicking L. parviflora also included 1‐tridecanol. These synthetic blends may be helpful to monitor A. cyanea in biocontrol programmes.

The rise in global atmospheric temperature due to increase in the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration needs to be tackled immediately before it reaches the point of no return. The application of innovative technologies based on the concepts of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) can contribute in this direction by simultaneously sequestrating CO2 and producing value-added products in the process. Wastewater treatment with simultaneous bioenergy and biofuel recovery is also one of the added advantage of employing BESs for CO2 fixation. This review focuses on the potential of employing BES-based technologies like microbial carbon capture, plant-microbial fuel cell and microbial electrosynthesis cell for the concomitant production of valuables and CO2 sequestration. Also, various parameters affecting performance of BES that need to be optimized for the proper field-scale demonstration of these technologies are discussed. The importance of long-chain alkanes and free fatty acids present in leaf surface waxes of two Commelinaceae rice-field weeds, Commelina benghalensis L. and Murdannia nudiflora (L.) Brenan, was evaluated as short-range attractant and oviposition stimulant in the Lema praeusta (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Surface waxes were extracted by dipping leaves in n-hexane for 1 min at 27 ± 1 °C. Thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography–flame ionization detection analyses of n-hexane extracts revealed 20 n-alkanes from C14 to C36 and 13 free fatty acids from C12:0 to C22:0. Pentacosane and palmitoleic acid were predominant among n-alkanes and free fatty acids, respectively. Females showed attraction to one leaf equivalent surface wax of both weeds against the control solvent (petroleum ether) in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. However, the insect could not discriminate between one leaf equivalent surface waxes of two weeds, suggesting that both weeds were equally attractive to females. Among all identified alkanes and fatty acids, females showed attraction towards individual docosane, tricosane, pentacosane and heptacosane, and tridecanoic acid, palmitoleic acid, linoleic acid, and arachidic acid, resembling in amounts as present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of C. benghalensis and M. nudiflora, respectively. A synthetic blend of either docosane, tricosane, pentacosane, and heptacosane, resembling in amounts as present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of C. benghalensis, or tridecanoic acid, palmitoleic acid, linoleic acid, and arachidic acid, resembling in amounts as present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of M. nudiflora, served as short-range attractant and oviposition stimulant in L. praeusta.

Microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) are a set of inventive tools that generate value-added by-products with concomitant wastewater remediation. However, due to the bottlenecks, like higher fabrication cost and inferior yield of resources, these inventive METs are still devoid of successful field-scale implementation. In this regard, application of quorum sensing (QS) mechanism to improve the power generation of the METs has gained adequate attention. The QS is an intercellular signalling mechanism that controls the bacterial social network in its vicinity via the synthesis of diffusible signal molecules labelled as auto inducers, thus ameliorating yield of valuables produced through METs. This state-of-the-art review elucidates different types of QS molecules and their working mechanism with the special focus on the widespread application of QS in the field of METs for their performance enhancement. Thus, this review intends to guide the researchers in rendering scalability to METs by integrating innovative QS mechanisms into them.

Two Polygonaceae weeds, Rumex dentatus L. and Polygonum glabrum Willd. are abundant in wheat- and rice-fields, respectively, in India. Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a biocontrol agent of these two weeds. The importance of long-chain alkanes and free fatty acids present in leaf surface waxes of these weeds was assessed as short-range attractant and ovipositional stimulant in G. placida females. Extraction, TLC, GC-MS and GC-FID analyses demonstrated 19 n-alkanes from n-C14 to n-C35 and 14 free fatty acids from C12:0 to C22:0 in leaf surface waxes. Hentriacontane was predominant among alkanes in both weeds, while oleic acid and docosanoic acid were predominant among free fatty acids in R. dentatus and P. glabrum, respectively. Females of G. placida were attracted toward one leaf equivalent surface wax of both weeds against the control solvent (petroleum ether) in a short Y-tube olfactometer bioassay. But, the insect could not differentiate between one leaf equivalent surface wax of R. dentatus and P. glabrum, indicating that both weed leaves were equally attractive in females. A synthetic blend of either 2.44, 35.57 and 23.58 μg ml-1 of octadecane, heptacosane and nonacosane, respectively, resembling the amounts present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of R. dentatus or 4.08, 19.54 and 23.58 μg ml-1 of octadecane, palmitoleic acid and docosanoic acid, respectively, resembling the amounts present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of P. glabrum acted as short-range attractant and ovipositional stimulant in G. placida. These results could be a basis for host plant specificity of the biocontrol agent.

The Polygonaceae weed, Rumex dentatus L. grows in association with wheat, mustard and potato, while Polygonum glabrum Willd. grows in association with rice in India. Both larvae and adults of Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) voraciously consume these weeds. Applications of synthetic herbicides to control weeds are harmful to the environment including beneficial organisms. We propose to find volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from both weeds causing attraction of the biocontrol agent, G. placida, in order to attempt to use the insect as a biological weed control. Behavioral responses of G. placida towards volatile blends characteristic of undamaged (UD), insect-damaged (ID), jasmonic acid-treated (JA) or mechanically-damaged (MD) plants were conducted by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Cuminaldehyde was predominant in VOCs of UD R. dentatus, ID P. glabrum, and both JA and MD R. dentatus and P. glabrum. Geraniol was predominant in VOCs of UD P. glabrum, while 1,3-diethylbenzene predominated in VOCs of ID R. dentatus. Females were more attracted towards volatile blends of ID plants compared to UD or JA plants. Females did not show attraction towards volatile blends of JA plants. We identified two bioactive synthetics blends, one comprised of seven compounds - 16.65 µg 1,3-diethylbenzene, 10.72 µg acetophenone, 6.52 µg 2,6-(E,Z)-nonadienal, 2.46 µg 1-nonanol, 4.19 µg decanal, 9.86 µg 4-ethylacetophenone and 3.34 µg 1-hexadecene dissolved in 25 µl CH

Larval Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) cause complete defoliation of Trichosanthes anguina L. and reduce crop yield in India. Females lay eggs on the leaf surface, and therefore leaf surface waxes are potentially involved in host selection. Alkanes and free fatty acids are the major constituents of leaf surface waxes, so a study was conducted to determine whether these wax constituents from three T. anguina cultivars (MNSR-1, Baruipur Long, and Polo No.1) could act as short-range attractants and oviposition stimulants in D. indica females. Twenty n-alkanes from n-C14 to n-C36 and 13 free fatty acids from C12:0 to C21:0 were detected in the leaf surface waxes of these cultivars. Heptadecane and stearic acid were predominant among n-alkanes and free fatty acids, respectively, in these cultivars. Females showed attraction towards one leaf equivalent surface wax of each of these cultivars against solvent controls (petroleum ether) in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. A synthetic blend of heptadecane, eicosane, hexacosane, and stearic acid, a synthetic blend of hexacosane and stearic acid, and a synthetic blend of pentadecane and stearic acid comparable to amounts present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of MNSR-1, Baruipur Long, and Polo No.1, respectively, were short-range attractants and oviposition stimulants in D. indica. Female egg laying responses were similar to each of these blends, providing information that could be used to developing baited traps in integrated pest management (IPM) programs.
