5. Write a Line: Tests with Answer Templates and String Completion Hints for Self-Learning in a CS1 Course

Abstract

One of the important scaffolding tasks in programming learning is writing a line of code performing the necessary action. This allows students to practice skills in a playground with instant feedback before writing more complex programs and increases their proficiency when solving programming problems. However, answers in the form of program code have high variability. Among the possible approaches to grading and providing feedback, we chose template matching. This paper reports the results of using regular-expression-based questions with string completion hints in a CS1 course for 4 years with 497 students. The evaluation results show that Perl-compatible regular expressions provide good precision and recall (more than 99\%) when used for questions requiring writing a single line of code while being able to provide string-completion feedback regardless of how wrong the initial student's answer is. After introducing formative quizzes with string-completion hints to the course, the number of questions that teachers and teaching assistants received about questions in the formative quizzes dropped considerably: most of the training question attempts resulted in finding the correct answer without help from the teaching staff. 6. Improving Comprehension: Intelligent Tutoring System Explaining the Domain Rules When Students Break Them

Abstract

Intelligent tutoring systems have become increasingly common in assisting students but are often aimed at isolated subject-domain tasks without creating a scaffolding system from lower- to higher-level cognitive skills, with low-level skills often neglected. We designed and developed an intelligent tutoring system, CompPrehension, which aims to improve the comprehension level of Bloom's taxonomy. The system features plug-in-based architecture, easily adding new subject domains and learning strategies. It uses formal models and software reasoners to solve the problems and judge the answers, and generates explanatory feedback about the broken domain rules and follow-up questions to stimulate the students' thinking. We developed two subject domain models: an Expressions domain for teaching the expression order of evaluation, and a Control Flow Statements domain for code-tracing tasks. The chief novelty of our research is that the developed models are capable of automatic problem classification, determining the knowledge required to solve them and so the pedagogical conditions to use the problem without human participation. More than 100 undergraduate first-year Computer Science students took part in evaluating the system. The results in both subject domains show medium but statistically significant learning gains after using the system for a few days; students with worse previous knowledge gained more. In the Control Flow Statements domain, the number of completed questions correlates positively with the post-test grades and learning gains. The students' survey showed a slightly positive perception of the system.

Abstract

Self-concordant goals are goals which represent a people's enduring interests and self-defining values (Sheldon, 2002 (See CR26)). People pursuing more self-concordant goals evidence higher subjective well-being, as shown in participants from both Western and non-Western cultures (Sheldon et al., 2004 (See CR31)). In a different literature, attributional style research has found that tendencies to provide optimistic explanations of life events also predict well-being. We hypothesized that people pursuing self-concordant goals would make more optimistic attributions about goal-specific outcomes, and that this tendency would help explain the link between self-concordance and well-being. Structural equation and multiple group modelling of 253 American and 230 Russian university students found support for these hypotheses. Self-concordance primarily predicted optimism following positive outcomes (that they will recur), not following negative outcomes (that they will end), and also, the mediational pattern was slightly different in the Russian than in the American sample. The results suggest that when people choose life-goals that fit their interests and values, they derive resources including the ability to interpret positive goal-outcomes in an optimistic way. 28. Linking Academic Performance to Optimistic Attributional Style: Attributions Following Positive Events Matter Most

Abstract

Optimistic attributional style has been shown to be reliably associated with high well-being and low depression and (Hu et al., "Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology," 34(4): 304-321, 2015). Via both a meta-analysis and two new studies, we examine the relationship between optimistic attributional style for explaining negative and positive events, and academic performance. In the meta-analysis, dispositions to make stable and global attributions for positive events were more strongly related to academic achievement (d = 0.21, k = 30, N = 6351) than dispositions to make unstable and local attributions regarding negative events (d = 0.11, k = 66, N = 11,023). Academic level (primary school vs secondary school vs university) and type of test (general vs achievement-specific) were shown to moderate the associations. The two new studies were designed to address the remaining questions. In both studies, optimistic attributional style for positive events most reliably predicted student academic achievement, including boosted achievement over time. Possible explanations for the moderator effects are discussed, and recommendations for future research as well as practical recommendations are provided.

The paper describes a method of automatically detecting and reporting grammar mistakes, regarding an order of tokens in the response.
