In this paper, we use the sub-ODE method to analyze soliton solutions for the renowned nonlinear Klein-Gordon model (NLKGM). This method provides a variety of soliton solutions, including three positive solitons, three Jacobian elliptic function solutions, bright solitons, dark solitons, periodic solitons, rational solitons and hyperbolic function solutions. Applications for these solitons can be found in optical communication, fiber optic sensors, plasma physics, Bose-Einstein condensation and other areas. We also study some numerical solutions by using forward, backward, and central difference techniques. Moreover, we discuss variational integrators (VIs) using the projection technique for NLKGM. We develop a numerical solution for NLKGM using the discrete Euler lagrange equation, the Lagrangian and the Euler lagrange equation. At the end, in various dimensions, covering 3D, 2D, and contour, we will also plot several graphs for the obtained NLKGM solutions. A contour plot is a type of graphic representation that displays a three-dimensional surface on a two-dimensional plane by using contour lines. Each contour line in the plotted function represents one of the function's constant values, mapping the function's value across the plane. This model has been studied across multiple soliton solutions using various methods in the open literature, but this model for VIs and finite deference scheme (FDS) is the first time it has been studied. Within the various numerical techniques accessible for solving Hamiltonian systems, variational integrators distinguish themselves because of their symplectic quality. Here are some of the symplectic properties: symplectic orthogonality, energy conservation, area preservation, and structure preservation.

This study aimed to evaluate the visual-spatiotemporal co-registration of the real and virtual objects’ movement dynamics by designing a low-cost, physics-based virtual reality (VR) system that provides actual cutaneous and kinesthetic haptic feedback of an object instead of using computer-generated haptic feedback. Twelve healthy participants performed three human-robot collaborative (HRC) sequential pick-and-place lifting tasks while both motion capture and VR systems, respectively, traced the movement of the real and virtual objects simultaneously. We used an iterative closest point algorithm to transform and align the 3D coordinates of VR point clouds with the 3D coordinates of the motion capture system. We introduced a new method to calculate and analyze the precision of visual and spatiotemporal co-registration between virtual and real objects. Results showed a high correlation ( $r >$ 0.96) between real and virtual objects’ movement dynamics and linear and angular co-registration errors of less than 5 cm and 8°, respectively. The trend also revealed a low temporal registration error of < 12 ms and was only found along the vertical axis. The visual registration data indicated that using real objects to provide cutaneous and kinesthetic haptics in the VR setting enhanced the users’ overall proprioception and visuomotor functions.

BACKGROUND: In the intensive care unit (ICU), complex medical conditions require specialized care; the threat of antibiotic resistance is significant due to frequent antibiotic use. This study investigates the pivotal role of culture sensitivity testing in shaping antibiotic prescription practices and patient outcomes in ICUs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: By using a prospective observational-analytical design, medical data from 640 patients at a Karachi hospital for one year in 2022 were utilized. The study focused on antibiotic therapy, including empiric and targeted approaches, culture sensitivity testing, the use of the APACHE scale for mortality prediction, and changes in antibiotic regimens based on culture reports. Statistical analysis involved Fisher’s Exact and ANOVA tests. RESULT: The age category above 60 emerged with the highest survivorship. Contrary to expectations, age did not seem to correlate significantly with mortality rates. Staphylococcus species was the most prevalent microorganism in this study, disproportionately affecting nonsurvivors 66.7%. The clinical profile comparison between survivors and nonsurvivors offered a multifaceted perspective, with significant differences in vital parameters such as temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, urine output, FiO2, mean arterial pH, and blood sugar levels. Survivors (44.60%) underwent complete antibiotic regimen changes, a strategy for improved patient outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Complex antibiotic combinations were prescribed for broad clinical conditions. These insights pave the way for future research on antibiotic stewardship in ICUs, navigating more effective and targeted treatments.

Background: Donation after circulatory death with thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion (DCD-NRP) for cardiac transplant has promising results, though data for lung transplant is lacking. This study evaluates lung transplant outcomes using DCD-NRP allografts. Methods: All patients who underwent lung transplantation (LT) from June 1, 2020, to July 5, 2023, at a single institution were evaluated. Recipients received organs from DCD-NRP or brain dead (control) donors (donation after brain death (DBD)). All DCD-NRP were adult, primary bilateral LT (BLT) without preoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Inclusion criteria for controls were age >18 years, BLT, no preoperative ECMO, and primary transplantation. Comparison was separated by LT or heart-lung transplant (HLT). The primary outcome was primary graft dysfunction (PGD) grade 3 at 72 hours. Results: There were 8 LT and 3 HLT in the DCD-NRP cohort, and 138 BLT and 7 HL DBD controls. PGD grade 3 at 72 hours was 0% in the entire DCD-NRP cohort (vs control: 9.4% LT and 0% HLT). Purpose To evaluate the Visual Outcome in Diabetic Retinopathy with Macular Oedema after Combined Therapy with Intravitreal Avastin (Bevacizumab) and Retinal Photocoagulation. Material and Methods The study included a total of 142 eyes in 142 patients with diabetic macular oedema. All eyes were treated with intravitreal bevacizumab followed by laser photocoagulation .Visual outcome was measured in terms of changes in visual acuity (logMAR) at I month and 3 months after treatment and central macular thickness using spectral domain Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) at 3 months after treatment. Results Visual acuity improved from the mean best corrected visual a cuity (BCVA) log (MAR) of 0.9678 ± 0.2306 at baseline to 0.8928 ± 0.2516 at first visit and then 0.7831 ± 0.2866 at final visit in all 142 patients. OCT determined central macular thickness changed from a mean value of 624 ± 151 microns at first visit to 478 ± 141 microns at final visit in all studied subject. Conclusion Combined therapy with intravitreal bevacizumab and laser photocoagulation has a role in stabilizing the retinal anatomy and reducing retinal edema both in NPDR (Non proliferative diabetic retinopathy) and PDR (Proliferative diabetic retinopathy) with macular oedema. The decrease in the central macular thickness is also associated with a significant improvement in BCVA.

Abstract Background In older people living with frailty, polypharmacy can lead to preventable harm like adverse drug reactions and hospitalization. Deprescribing is a strategy to reduce problematic polypharmacy. All stakeholders should be actively involved in developing a person‐centred deprescribing process that involves shared decision‐making. Objective To co‐design an intervention, supported by a logic model, to increase the engagement of older people living with frailty in the process of deprescribing. Design Experience‐based co‐design is an approach to service improvement, which uses service users and providers to identify problems and design solutions. This was used to create a person‐centred intervention with the potential to improve the quality and outcomes of the deprescribing process. A ‘trigger film’ showing older people talking about their healthcare experiences was created and facilitated discussions about current problems in the deprescribing process. Problems were then prioritized and appropriate solutions were developed. The review located the solutions in the context of current processes and procedures. An ideal care pathway and a complex intervention to deliver better care were developed. Setting and Participants Older people living with frailty, their informal carers and professionals living and/or working in West Yorkshire, England, UK. Deprescribing was considered in the context of primary care. Results The current deprescribing process differed from an ideal pathway. A complex intervention containing seven elements was required to move towards the ideal pathway. Three of these elements were prototyped and four still need development. The complex intervention responded to priorities about (a) clarity for older people about what was happening at all stages in the deprescribing process and (b) the quality of one‐to‐one consultations. Conclusions Priorities for improving the current deprescribing process were successfully identified. Solutions were developed and structured as a complex intervention. Further work is underway to (a) complete the prototyping of the intervention and (b) conduct feasibility testing. Patient or Public Contribution Older people living with frailty (and their informal carers) have made a central contribution, as collaborators, to ensure that a complex intervention has the greatest possible potential to enhance the experience of deprescribing medicines.

Aim: To assess the changes in frequency parameters of STN-DBS stimulation over 6 months required to optimize gait in PD patients. Methods: It's a single center, open label longitudinal study of PD patients after STN-DBS with gait disorders. Gait assessment using stand–walk–sit (SWS) test and freezing of gait (FOG) scores were done at baseline and after 6 months. Gait was assessed in five frequencies settings, that is, 60 Hz, 90 Hz, 130 Hz, 180 Hz and stimulation “OFF” during medication ON state. Voltage was maintained. Results: Fifteen post-deep brain stimulation (DBS) patients were included. Mean duration after surgery was 3.73 ± 2.82 years. In SWS and FOG at baseline, five patients have good response at 180 Hz frequency, five at 130 Hz, one at 90 Hz, two patients at 60 Hz, one both 60 and 90 Hz, and one at both 90 and 180 HZ. And after 6 months out of the 13 patients who were able to perform the test, four patients had good response at 180 Hz frequency, four at 130 Hz, two at 90 Hz, one each for 60 Hz and battery OFF state, and one for both 130 Hz and 180 Hz. At 6 months, four patients had good response at the same frequency as baseline, while 11 patients have change in frequency from baseline. Conclusion: Optimal frequency for gait varies in patients—both low and high frequency may be useful. Optimal frequency for improving gait changes over period of time. Regular assessment and changing frequency may improve gait after DBS.

Piezoelectric materials have attracted considerable attention over the last two decades because many technologies utilize their core properties of piezoelectric materials. Previous applications consisted of bulk structures; however, a shift towards better performance and a more simplified and compatible fabrication method are required. Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a material that fits these criteria; it has a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure with a polarized c-axis and exhibits piezoelectric properties. Furthermore, it has an added benefit as the fabrication process of AIN is compatible with complementary metal–oxide semiconductor technology. This has led to a rapid increase in the adoption and interest in AlN-based devices. In this review, the crystal structure of AlN and its piezoelectric properties are compared with those of aluminum scandium nitride. Subsequently, functional devices such as consumer-based devices, telecommunication-based devices, industrial-related applications, and medical applications are presented. Finally, a summary and discussion of the future AlN research are presented.

Diabetes has become a pandemic as the number of diabetic people continues to rise globally. Being a heterogeneous disease, it has different manifestations and associated complications in different individuals like diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy, and others. With the advent of science and technology, this era desperately requires increasing the pace of embracing precision medicine and tailoring of drug treatment based on the genetic composition of individuals. It has been previously established that response to antidiabetic drugs, like biguanides, sulfonylureas, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists, and others, depending on variations in their transporter genes, metabolizing genes, genes involved in their action, etc. Responsiveness of these drugs also relies on epigenetic factors, including histone modifications, miRNAs, and DNA methylation, as well as environmental factors and the lifestyle of an individual. For precision medicine to make its way into clinical procedures and come into execution, all these factors must be reckoned with. This review provides an insight into several factors oscillating around the idea of precision medicine in type-2 diabetes mellitus.

Right heart thrombus represents medical emergency as it is associated with acute pulmonary embolism. Right heart thrombus can manifest acutely in a dramatic fashion as cardiac arrest. Bedside echocardiography is a key to rapid diagnosis and allow early intervention. We report a case of elderly female who was admitted to our hospital after a mechanical fall and found to have hip fracture. Despite an initial uncomplicated course, she experienced cardiopulmonary arrest with right heart clot in transit identified on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). We highlight the utility of point-of-care ultrasound as well as use of TEE to establish cause of cardiopulmonary arrest.

Objective: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare osteomalacia characterized by paraneoplastic secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23. Concomitant occurrence of TIO during pregnancy is rarer still. Our objective was to report a young patient with debilitating fractures diagnosed with TIO who became pregnant and subsequently had her tumor localized by gallium-68 (Ga-68) DOTATATE positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI). Case Report: A 28 year-old woman with a 2-year history of stress fractures was found to have the following: (1) alkaline phosphatase level, 220 (reference range, 30-95) U/L; (2) phosphorus level, 2.1 (2.5-5.0) mg/dL; (3) 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 level,

The higher losses of fruits and vegetables during post-harvest handling are a serious matter for any country whose economy is based on agriculture. The products of this plant are a significant source of horticultural produce storage used for the control of different post-harvest losses, which include diseases as well as microorganisms. Bio-coatings may be used as a better alternative to the synthetic chemicals. The impact of edible coating on the quality and storage life of mango (cv. ‘Anwar Rataul’) fruit was investigated by harvesting the fruits at a firm green stage of physiological maturity and coating them with corn oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, soya bean oil, and animal fat. The uncoated and coated fruits were stored at 25 °C and the relative humidity (RH) was 75%. The fruits were analyzed for physicochemical quality attributes during storage at 0 (harvest time), 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 days. The data showed that most of the parameters were affected significantly by the materials of coating and storage intervals (P ≤ 0.05). The fruits coated with animal fat had significantly superior fruit color, taste, aroma, firmness, total sugar content, and acidity of fruit juice, total soluble solids, and ascorbic acid content, as well as delayed ripening. Animal fat-coated fruits retained titratable acidity, ascorbic acid content (mg.100g-1) and fruit firmness (kg.cm-2) with minimal disease incidence, and weight loss (%), whereas uncoated fruits did not retain all quality attributes and deteriorated after 20 days of storage. In conclusion, mango fruits could be coated with animal fat and stored for up to 25 days without deterioration in quality.

This paper examines the propagation of M-shape solitons and their interactions with kink waves to the (2 + 1)-dimensional integrable Schwarz-Korteweg-de Vries (ISKdV) problem by applying the symbolic computation with ansatz functions technique and logarithmic transformation. The governing model usually appears in the nonlinear shallow water waves and fluid mechanics. We discuss various nonlinear waves like multiwave solutions (MSs), homoclinic breather (HB), M-shape solitons, single exponential form (one-kink), and double exponential form (two-kink). These waves have lot of applications in fluid dynamics, nonlinear optics, chemical reaction networks, biological systems, climate science, and material science. We also study interaction among M-shape solitons with kink wave. At the end, we discuss the stability characteristics of all solutions.

This article studies diverse forms of lump-type solutions for coupled nonlinear generalized Zakharov equations (CNL-GZEs) in plasma physics through an appropriate transformation approach and bilinear equations. By utilizing the positive quadratic assumption in the bilinear equation, the lump-type solutions are derived. Similarly, by employing a single exponential transformation in the bilinear equation, the lump one-soliton solutions are derived. Furthermore, by choosing the double exponential ansatz in the bilinear equation, the lump two-soliton solutions are found. Interaction behaviors are observed and we also establish a few new solutions in various dimensions (3D and contour). Furthermore, we compute rogue-wave solutions and lump periodic solutions by employing proper hyperbolic and trigonometric functions.

In this article, we consider the improved perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (IP-NLSE) with dual power law nonlinearity, which arises in optical fibers and photovoltaic-photo-refractive materials. We found grey and black optical solitons of the governing equation by means of a suitable complex envelope ansatz solution. By using the Chupin Liu’s theorem (CLT) for the grey and black solitons, we evaluated new categories of combined optical soliton (COS) solutions to the IP-NLSE. The propagation behaviors for homoclinic breathers (HB), multiwaves and M-shape solitons will be analytically examined. All new analytical solutions will be found by an ansatz function scheme and suitable transformations. Multiwave solitons have been reported by using a three-waves technique. Furthermore, two kinds of interactions for M-shape soliton through exponential functions will be examined.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of maturity stages on the physicochemical characteristics of grapefruit (Citrus paradisi cv. ‘Shamber Tarnab’) under storage conditions for 60 days at ambient temperature (16±1 °C with 55-60% relative humidity). Grapefruits were harvested at different maturity stages, namely mature green (MG) and full ripe (FR). The fruits of both stages were assessed for different physical quality parameters at 15 days interval. The experimental results showed that ascorbic acid content, titratable acidity, fruit firmness, percent disease incidence was higher at FR stage. In contrast, weight loss, percent juice content, total soluble solid (TSS), and TSS/acid ratio at MG (mature green) were lower than that of FR fruits. Regarding storage durations, the fruit firmness, titratable acidity, percent juice content, ascorbic acid content decreased significantly, whilst total soluble solid, TSS/Acid ratio, weight loss, and percent disease incidence increased significantly with the extension of storage duration from 0 to 60 days. As concerned to its interactive effects, the highest ascorbic acid content, titratable acidity, percent juice content, and maximum fruit firmness were observed in fresh grapefruit, harvested at (MG) mature green stages, whereas the maximum total soluble solid, percent disease incidence, and TSS/Acid ratio were recorded in fruit harvested at (FR) full ripe stage, stored for 60 days at room temperature. Similarly, the Pearson’s Correlation Analysis (p> 0.05) of grapefruit was positive effect for most of the quality traits of grapefruit at different storage durations and maturity stages. It was concluded that grapefruit could be harvested at the mature green stage (MG) for sustaining quality attributes up to 60 days of storage at room temperature.

Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. The rhino-cerebral form of mucormycosis is most commonly seen in patients with diabetes mellitus, whereas pulmonary mucormycosis is a rare manifestation in patients with hematological malignancy and transplant recipients. We report a case of a 40-year-old male, with history of poorly controlled diabetes, who presented to the emergency room with a one-week history of hemoptysis. Computed Tomography (CT) of the chest was concerning for a lung mass or abscess. Flexible bronchoscopy revealed an endobronchial lesion that was biopsied with a cryoprobe. Histopathologic examination showed non-septate right-angle branching hyphae, typical of mucormycosis. He underwent surgical resection of the right middle and lower lobes and treatment with antimycotic agents with a complete recovery. This case highlights the importance of early histopathological diagnosis of pulmonary mucormycosis in preventing a fatal outcome.

We explore stochastic–fractional Drinfel’d–Sokolov–Wilson (SFDSW) equations for some wave solutions such as the cross-kink rational wave solution, periodic cross-rational wave solution and homoclinic breather wave solution. We also examine some M-shaped solutions such as the M-shaped rational solution, M-shaped rational solution with one and two kink waves. We also derive the M-shaped interaction with rogue and kink waves and the M-shaped interaction with periodic and kink waves. This model is used in mathematical physics, surface physics, plasma physics, population dynamics and applied sciences. Moreover, we also show our results graphically in different dimensions. We obtain these solutions under some constraint conditions.

We explore various analytical rational solutions with symbolic computation using the ansatz transformation functions. We gain a variety of rational solutions such as M-shaped rational solutions (MSRs), periodic cross-rationals (PCRs), multi-wave solutions, rational kink cross-solutions (RKCs), and homoclinic breather solutions (HBs), and by using the appropriate values for the relevant parameters, their dynamics are visualized in figures. Additionally, two different types of interactions between MSRs and kink waves are analyzed. Furthermore, we examine the stability of the obtained solutions and create a corresponding table. We analyze the stability of these solutions and the movement role of the wave by making graphs as two-dimensional, three-dimensional and density graphs as well as contour visual and stream plots.

This manuscript consist of diverse forms of lump: lump one stripe, lump two stripe, generalized breathers, Akhmediev breather, multiwave, M-shaped rational and rogue wave solutions for the complex cubic quintic Ginzburg Landau (CQGL) equation with intrapulse Raman scattering (IRS) via appropriate transformations approach. Furthermore, it includes homoclinic, Ma and Kuznetsov-Ma breather and their relating rogue waves and some interactional solutions, including an interactional approach with the help of the double exponential function. We have elaborated the kink cross-rational (KCR) solutions and periodic cross-rational (KCR) solutions with their graphical slots. We have also constituted some of our solutions in distinct dimensions by means of 3D and contours profiles to anticipate the wave propagation. Parameter domains are delineated in which these exact localized soliton solutions exit in the proposed model.

This present article explores the transversal magnetized flow of a viscous fluid. The flow is confined to a vertical wall, saturated in permeable medium, along with ramped wall temperature. In this study, the conjugate impact of heat and mass transfer with slip and non-slip conditions are considered in the velocity field and energy equation. The dimensionless Atangana-Baleanu fractional governing equations are derived with Laplace transformation. Computational results are expressed graphically with the effect of various physical parameters. Comparative graphical analysis of the Atangana-Baleanu derivative for temperature, concentration and velocity field, with slip and non-slip impact, shows that the memory effects of the Atangana-Baleanu derivative are better than the results that exist in the literature.

Purpose: Institutional theory is a reasonable explanation for the motives of corporate social responsibility (CSR) behaviours (e.g. corporate green innovation). The existing literature defines institutional pressure as threats for legitimacy when firms operate within a country or a region; one area that has received little attention is the situation when a firm extends its operations across borders to pursue internationalisation. The study investigates the impact of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on green innovation at the firm level. Design/methodology/approach: The zero-inflated negative binomial regression models are estimated to analyse the data collected from 2065 manufacturing enterprises listed in China during 2007–2017 (n = 14 129). Green innovation is measured by the number of green patents, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) International Patent Classification (IPC) Green Inventory. Findings/results: The findings show that OFDI is positively associated with green innovation for emerging market enterprises (EMEs). Furthermore, compared with investment in emerging economies, OFDI in developed economies has a stronger positive relationship with corporate green innovation. The positive effect of OFDI on corporate green innovation will be higher for EMEs located in sub-national regions (i.e., province of the home country) with lower levels of institutional development. Practical implications: Emerging market enterprises should overcome organisational inertia and compete in a broader market to enhance their awareness and ability of green innovation. Originality/value: This article contributes to the existing literature by exploring institutional pressure faced by EMEs when they operate overseas (e.g. OFDI) can play a significant role in influencing green innovation, and enriches our understanding of EMEs’ inclination towards CSR (e.g. green innovation) in the context of internationalisation.

Background: Pain is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Analgesics may be appropriate for some CKD patients. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of overall analgesic use and the use of different types of analgesics including acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), adjuvants, and opioids in patients with CKD. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Setting: Interventional and observational studies presenting data from 2000 or later. Exclusion criteria included acute kidney injury or studies that limited the study population to a specific cause, symptom, and/or comorbidity. Patients: Adults with stage 3-5 CKD including dialysis patients and those managed conservatively without dialysis. Measurements: Data extracted included title, first author, design, country, year of data collection, publication year, mean age, stage of CKD, prevalence of analgesic use, and the types of analgesics prescribed. Methods: Databases searched included MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. Two reviewers independently screened all titles and abstracts, assessed potentially relevant articles, and extracted data. We estimated pooled prevalence of analgesic use and the I 2 statistic was computed to measure heterogeneity. Random-effects models were used to account for variations in study design and sample populations, and a double arcsine transformation of the prevalence variables was used to accommodate potential overweighting of studies with very large or very small prevalence measurements. Sensitivity analyses were performed to determine the magnitude of publication bias and assess possible sources of heterogeneity. Results: Forty studies were included in the analysis. The prevalence of overall analgesic use in the random-effects model was 50.8%. The prevalence of acetaminophen, NSAIDs, and adjuvant use was 27.5%, 17.2%, and 23.4%, respectively, while the prevalence of opioid use was 23.8%. Due to the possibility of publication bias, the actual prevalence of acetaminophen use in patients with advanced CKD may be substantially lower than this meta-analysis indicates. A trim-and-fill analysis decreased the pooled prevalence estimate of acetaminophen use to 5.4%. The prevalence rate for opioid use was highly influenced by 2 large US studies. When these were removed, the estimated prevalence decreased to 17.3%. Limitations: There was a lack of detailed information regarding the analgesic regimen (such as specific analgesics used within each class and inconsistent accounting for patients on multiple drugs and the use of over-the-counter analgesics such as acetaminophen and NSAIDs), patient characteristics, type of pain being treated, and the outcomes of treatment. Data on adjuvant use were very limited. These results, therefore, must be interpreted with caution. Conclusions: There was tremendous variability in the prescribing patterns of both nonopioid and opioid analgesics within and between countries suggesting widespread uncertainty about the optimal pharmacological approach to treating pain. Further research that incorporates robust reporting of analgesic regimens and links prescribing patterns to clinical outcomes is needed to guide optimal clinical practice.

Terpenes are the largest class of natural products with extensive structural diversity and are widely used as pharmaceuticals, herbicides, flavourings, fragrances, and biofuels. While they have mostly been isolated from plants and fungi, the availability and analysis of bacterial genome sequence data indicates that bacteria also possess many putative terpene synthase genes. In this study, we further explore this potential for terpene synthase activity in bacteria. Twenty two potential class I terpene synthase genes (TSs) were selected to represent the full sequence diversity of bacterial synthase candidates and recombinantly expressed in E. coli. Terpene synthase activity was detected for 15 of these enzymes, and included mono-, sesqui- and diterpene synthase activities. A number of confirmed sesquiterpene synthases also exhibited promiscuous monoterpene synthase activity, suggesting that bacteria are potentially a richer source of monoterpene synthase activity then previously assumed. Several terpenoid products not previously detected in bacteria were identified, including aromandendrene, acora-3,7(14)-diene and longiborneol. Overall, we have identified promiscuous terpene synthases in bacteria and demonstrated that terpene synthases with substrate promiscuity are widely distributed in nature, forming a rich resource for engineering terpene biosynthetic pathways for biotechnology.

In this work, we study a time-fractional ion sound and Langmuir waves system (FISLWS) with Atangana–Baleanu derivative (ABD). We use a fractional ABD operator to transform our system into an ODE. We investigate multiwaves, periodic cross-kink, rational, and interaction solutions by the combination of rational, trigonometric, and various bilinear functions. Furthermore, 3D, 2D, and relevant contour plots are presented for the natural evolution of the gained solutions under the selection of proper parameters.

In this paper, we study the improved perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation with cubic quadratic nonlinearity (IPNLSE-CQN) to describe the propagation properties of nonlinear periodic waves (PW) in fiber optics. We obtain the chirped periodic waves (CPW) with some Jacobi elliptic functions (JEF) and also obtain some solitary waves (SW) such as dark, bright, hyperbolic, singular and periodic solitons. The nonlinear chirp associated with each of these optical solitons was observed to be dependent on the pulse intensity. The graphical behavior of these waves will also be displayed.

Abstract The suite of biological catalysts found in Nature has the potential to contribute immensely to scientific advancements, ranging from industrial biotechnology to innovations in bioenergy and medical intervention. The endeavour to obtain a catalyst of choice is, however, wrought with challenges. Herein we report the design of a structure-based annotation system for the identification of functionally similar enzymes from diverse sequence backgrounds. Focusing on an enzymatic activity with demonstrated synthetic and therapeutic relevance, five new phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) enzymes were discovered and characterised with respect to their potential applications. The variation and novelty of various desirable traits seen in these previously uncharacterised enzymes demonstrates the importance of effective sequence annotation in unlocking the potential diversity that Nature provides in the search for tailored biological tools. This new method has commercial relevance as a strategy for assaying the ‘evolvability’ of certain enzyme features, thus streamlining and informing protein engineering efforts.

Vitamin E is the major lipid-soluble component in the cell antioxidant defence system and is exclusively obtained from the diet. It has numerous important roles within the body because of its antioxidant activity. Oxidation has been linked to numerous possible conditions and diseases, including cancer, ageing, arthritis and cataracts; vitamin E has been shown to be effective against these. Platelet hyperaggregation, which can lead to atherosclerosis, may also be prevented by vitamin E; additionally, it also helps to reduce the production of prostaglandins such as thromboxane, which cause platelet clumping. The current literature review discusses the functions and roles of vitamin E in human health and some diseases as well as the consequences of vitamin E deficiency. The main focus of the review is on the tocopherol class of the vitamers.

Leadership and management training during pathology residency have been identified repeatedly by employers as insufficient. A 1-month rotation in clinical laboratory management (CLM) was created for third-year pathology residents. We report on our experience and assess the value of this rotation. The rotation was one-half observational and one-half active. The observational component involved being a member of department and laboratory service line leadership, both at the departmental and institutional level. Observational participation enabled learning of both the content and principles of leadership and management activities. The active half of the rotation was performance of a project intended to advance the strategic trajectory of the department and laboratory service line. In our program that matriculates 4 residents per year, 20 residents participated from April 2010 through December 2015. Their projects either activated a new priority area or helped propel an existing strategic priority forward. Of the 16 resident graduates who had obtained their first employment or a fellowship position, 9 responded to an assessment survey. The majority of respondents (5/9) felt that the rotation significantly contributed to their ability to compete for a fellowship or their first employment position. The top reported benefits of the rotation included people management; communication with staff, departmental, and institutional leadership; and involvement in department and institutional meetings and task groups. Our 5-year experience demonstrates both the successful principles by which the CLM rotation can be established and the high value of this rotation to residency graduates.

Physico-chemical characteristics of two Bauhinia seed varieties (B. variegata and B. linnaei), were evaluated for commercial exploration. Physico-chemical characteristics of the oils for both varieties were demonstrated and mean values found to be refractive index (40 °C) 1.4589 and 1.4588, peroxide value 1.9 and 2.4 (meq O2 / kg of oil), iodine value 84.5 and 92.2 (g of I2/100g of oil), saponification number 191.3 and 195.5 (mg of KOH /g of oil), free fatty acids 0.6% and 0.9%, unsaponifiable matter 0.9% and 1.2% and color (1 in. cell), 2.2-2.9R + 30.0-25.0Y, respectively. Linoleic 42.1 and 45.8 %, oleic 13.4 and 12.6%, stearic 17.5 and 18.8% and palmitic 22.1 and 16.8% were the main fatty acids in the crude seed oils. Minor amounts of palmitoleic, margaric, linolenic, arachidic, behenic, eicosapentaenoic and nervonic acid were also identified. The composition of defatted seed residue of B. variegata and B. linnaei were found as: protein 41.9% and 38.6%, oil 18.0%, and 17.4% ash 4.8% and 4.2%, moisture 6.7% and 6.3%, fiber 6.9% and 7.3% and total carbohydrate 28.4% and 33.8%, respectively. Proximate and fatty acid composition of both Bauhinia varieties were found to be almost similar. It was concluded that Bauhinia seed is a rich source of linoleic acid and could be explored for commercial uses.
