The doping of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is a key tool for manipulating the properties of ENMs (e.g., electromagnetic, optical, etc.) for different therapeutic applications. However, adverse health outcomes and the cellular biointeraction of doped ENMs, compared to undoped counterparts, are not fully understood. Previously, we have shown that doping manganese oxide nanoparticles with ZnO (ZnO-MnO2 NPs) improved their catalytic properties. In this study, we assessed the toxicity of ZnO-MnO2 NPs in Raw 264.7 cells. NPs were prepared via an eco-friendly, co-precipitation method and characterized by several techniques, including transmission and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared. The physicochemical properties of ZnO-MnO2 NPs, including size, morphology, and crystalline structure, were almost identical to MnO2 NPs. However, ZnO-MnO2 NPs showed slightly larger particle aggregates and negative charge in cell culture media. Exposure to ZnO-MnO2 NPs resulted in lower toxicity based on the cell viability and functional assay (phagocytosis) data. Exposure to both NPs resulted in the activation of the cell inflammatory response and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite this, exposure to ZnO-MnO2 NPs was associated with a lower toxicity profile, and it resulted in a higher ROS burst and the activation of the cell antioxidant system, hence indicating that MnO2 NP-induced toxicity is potentially mediated via other ROS-independent pathways. Furthermore, the cellular internalization of ZnO-MnO2 NPs was lower compared to MnO2 NPs, and this could explain the lower extent of toxicity of ZnO-MnO2 NPs and suggests Zn-driven ROS generation. Together, the findings of this report suggest that ZnO (1%) doping impacts cellular biointeraction and the consequent toxicological outcomes of MnO2 NPs in Raw 264.7 cells.

This work demonstrates hydrazine electro-oxidation and sensing using an ultrathin copper oxide nanosheet (CuO-NS) architecture prepared via a versatile foam-surfactant dual template (FSDT) approach. CuO-NS was synthesised by chemical deposition of the hexagonal surfactant Brij®58 liquid crystal template containing dissolved copper ions using hydrogen foam that was concurrently generated by a sodium borohydride reducing agent. The physical characterisations of the CuO-NS showed the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin nanosheet architecture of crystalline CuO with a specific surface area of ~39 m2/g. The electrochemical CuO-NS oxidation and sensing performance for hydrazine oxidation revealed that the CuO nanosheets had a superior oxidation performance compared with bare-CuO, and the reported state-of-the-art catalysts had a high hydrazine sensitivity of 1.47 mA/cm2 mM, a low detection limit of 15 μM (S/N = 3), and a linear concentration range of up to 45 mM. Moreover, CuO-NS shows considerable potential for the practical use of hydrazine detection in tap and bottled water samples with a good recovery achieved. Furthermore, the foam-surfactant dual template (FSDT) one-pot synthesis approach could be used to produce a wide range of nanomaterials with various compositions and nanoarchitectures at ambient conditions for boosting the electrochemical catalytic reactions.

Abstract Ce-doped LaMnO3 perovskite ceramics (La1−xCexMnO3) were synthesized by sol-gel based co-precipitation method and tested for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol using molecular oxygen. Benzyl alcohol conversion of ca. 25–42% was achieved with benzaldehyde as the main product. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), BET surface area, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), temperature-programmed oxidation (O2-TPO), FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques were used to examine the physiochemical properties. XRD analysis demonstrates the single phase crystalline high purity of the perovskite. The Ce-doped LaMnO3 perovskite demonstrated reducibility at low-temperature and higher mobility of surface O2-ion than their respective un-doped perovskite. The substitution of Ce3+ ion into the perovskite matrix improve the surface redox properties, which strongly influenced the catalytic activity of the material. The LaMnO3 perovskite exhibited considerable activity to benzyl alcohol oxidation but suffered a slow deactivation with time-on-stream. Nevertheless, the insertion of the A site metal cation with a trivalent Ce3+ metal cation led to an enhanced in catalytic performance because of atomic-scale interactions between the A and B active site. La0.95Ce0.05MnO3 catalyst demonstrated the excellent catalytic activity with a selectivity of 99% at 120 °C.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have become one of the most popular metal oxide nanoparticles and recently emerged as a promising potential candidate in the fields of optical, electrical, food packaging, and biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, and low cost. They have a role in cell apoptosis, as they trigger excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and release zinc ions (Zn2+) that induce cell death. The zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized using the plant extracts appear to be simple, safer, sustainable, and more environmentally friendly compared to the physical and chemical routes. These biosynthesized nanoparticles possess strong biological activities and are in use for various biological applications in several industries. Initially, the present review discusses the synthesis and recent advances of zinc oxide nanoparticles from plant sources (such as leaves, stems, bark, roots, rhizomes, fruits, flowers, and seeds) and their biomedical applications (such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, photocatalytic, wound healing, and drug delivery), followed by their mechanisms of action involved in detail. This review also covers the drug delivery application of plant-mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles, focusing on the drug-loading mechanism, stimuli-responsive controlled release, and therapeutic effect. Finally, the future direction of these synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles’ research and applications are discussed.

Phosphomolybdic acid supported on silica (PMoA), and phosphomolybdic acid supported on silica substituted with nickel (Ni-PMoA), cobalt (Co-PMoA), are prepared with different loadings. All catalysts have been characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), BET surface area, Solid-state 31P NMR spectra, FT-IR, Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) and Powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The surface areas of the catalysts are slightly lower than the surface area of the silica used in making these catalysts, while the XRD studies indicated the amorphous nature of the prepared catalysts. All catalysts are tested for their activity in the hydrodesulfurization of thiophene in the temperature range of 300â500 °C. Under similar conditions the silica supported catalyst i.e. PMoA, showed lower hydrodesulfurization activity, compared to the nickel and cobalt substituted heteropoly acids, i.e. Ni-PMoA and Co-PMoA, indicating enhancement of catalytic activity with substitution of nickel and cobalt. Moreover, the nickel-substituted catalyst, Ni-PMoA, showed slightly higher activity than the cobalt-substituted ones, Co-PMoA. At 500 °C, Ni-PMoA gave a 99.6% HDS conversion of thiophene whereas the Co-PMoA yielded a 98.3%. HDS conversion of thiophene. Brønsted/Lewis acidity of the catalyst precursor appear to be essential for the catalytic hydrodesulfurization. Nickel–manganese mixed oxides doped with 1, 3, 5 mol% ytterbia have been prepared by co-precipitation method and used in the catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Catalytic activity of these oxides calcined at 400 °C and 500 °C was studied for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to the corresponding aldehyde using molecular oxygen as an oxidizing agent. The results showed that thermally stable 5 mol% ytterbia doped nickel–manganese oxide [Yb2O3-(5%)-Ni6MnO8] exhibited highest catalytic performance when it was calcined at 400 °C. A 100% conversion of the benzyl alcohol was achieved with >99% selectivity to benzaldehyde within a reaction period of 5 h at 100 °C. The mixed oxide prepared has been characterized by scanning election microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and temperature programed reduction (H2-TPR).

Due to the recent advancement in the development of various characterization techniques, mixed metal oxide (MMO) based catalysts have gained tremendous attention in the field of catalysis. In this study, we demonstrated the synthesis of a series of novel MMO based catalysts by a facile co-precipitation method. The detailed structure and composition of thoria promoted NiMnO catalysts was investigated using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques such as, SEM, EDAX, XRD, TGA, BET and TPR. In order to study the effect of the content of thorium oxide on the catalytic activity of the as-prepared material various samples were prepared by the addition of low quantities of thorium oxide with 1%, 3% and 5% on NiMnO. The catalytic performances of the as-prepared catalysts were evaluated towards the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol using molecular oxygen as oxidant. Furthermore, in order to investigate the effect of the calcination temperatures on the catalytic activities of the as-prepared materials, the samples were calcined at three different temperatures at 300 °C, 400 °C and 500 °C. The catalysts displayed significant enhancement in catalytic activity towards the catalytic conversion of benzyl alcohol (C6H5CH2OH) to benzaldehyde (C6H5CHO). Detailed kinetic studies of the reactions using gas chromatography have revealed that the variation of calcination temperature and the percentage of thoria had significant effect on the catalytic performances of the materials. Among all synthesized catalysts ThO2-(5%)-NiMnO catalyst calcined at 400 °C exhibited the highest catalytic performance and stability for the selective oxidation of alcohols.

Biofilms not only protect bacteria and Candida species from antibiotics, but they also promote the emergence of drug-resistant strains, making eradication more challenging. As a result, novel antimicrobial agents to counteract biofilm formation are desperately needed. In this study, Terminalia catappa leaf extract (TCE) was used to optimize the TCE-capped silver nanoparticles (TCE-AgNPs) via a one-pot single-step method. Varied concentrations of TCE have yielded different sized AgNPs. The physico-chemical characterization of TCE-AgNPs using UV-Vis, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy have confirmed the formation of nanostructures, their shape and size and plausible role of TCE bio-active compounds, most likely involved in the synthesis as well as stabilization of NPs, respectively. TCE-AgNPs have been tested for antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-PA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans using various microbiological protocols. TCE-Ag-NPs−3 significantly inhibits biofilm formation of MDR-PA, MRSA, and C. albicans by 73.7, 69.56, and 63.63%, respectively, at a concentration of 7.8 µg/mL, as determined by crystal violet microtiter assay. Furthermore, SEM micrograph shows that TCE-AgNPs significantly inhibit the colonization and adherence of biofilm forming cells; individual cells with loss of cell wall and membrane integrity were also observed, suggesting that the biofilm architecture and EPS matrix were severely damaged. Moreover, TEM and SEM images showed that TCE-AgNPs brutally damaged the cell wall and membranes of MDR-PA, MRSA, and C. albicans. Additionally, extreme ultrastructural changes such as deformation, disintegration, and separation of cell wall and membrane from the cells, have also been observed, indicating significant loss of membrane and cell wall integrity, which eventually led to cell death. Overall, the research revealed a simple, environmentally friendly, and low-cost method for producing colloidal TCE-AgNPs with promising applications in advanced clinical settings against broad-spectrum biofilm-forming antibiotic-resistant bacteria and candida strains.

Catalysis is an important area of chemistry, with an extensive amount of work going on in this area of sciences, toward synthesis and evaluation of newer catalysts. There are many reports for different conversion reactions such as oxidation, reduction, coupling, alkylation, and acylation for which various catalysts have been used such as mixed metal oxides, metal nanoparticles, metal organic complexes and many others. Among the many catalysts reported, the one catalyst that caught our attention due to its exploitation for a plethora of organic conversions is the sulfated tin oxide (STO), which is due to the low cost, greater stability and high efficiency of the catalyst. In this review, we have attempted to compile data about the structural properties of STO, and its applications as catalysts in various organic synthesis are presented. The literature data up to 2014 were collected and considered for the review.

Humans have witnessed three deadly pandemics so far in the twenty-first century which are associated with novel coronaviruses: SARS, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and COVID-19. All of these viruses, which are responsible for causing acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs), are highly contagious in nature and/or have caused high mortalities. The recently emerged COVID-19 disease is a highly transmittable viral infection caused by another zoonotic novel coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Similar to the other two coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 is also likely to have originated from bats, which have been serving as established reservoirs for various pathogenic coronaviruses. Although, it is still unknown how SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted from bats to humans, the rapid human-to-human transmission has been confirmed widely. The disease first appeared in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and quickly spread across the globe, infected 48,539,872 people, and caused 1,232,791 deaths in 215 countries, and the infection is still spreading at the time of manuscript preparation. So far, there is no definite line of treatment which has been approved or vaccine which is available. However, different types of potential vaccines and therapeutics have been evaluated and/or are under clinical trials against COVID-19. In this review, we summarize different types of acute respiratory diseases and briefly discuss earlier outbreaks of coronaviruses and compare their occurrence and pathogenicity with the current COVID-19 pandemic. Various epidemiological aspects of COVID-19 such as mode of spread, death rate, doubling time, etc., have been discussed in detail. Apart from this, different technical issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic including use of masks and other socio-economic problems associated with the pandemic have also been summarized. Additionally, we have reviewed various aspects of patient management strategies including mechanism of action, available diagnostic tools, etc., and also discussed different strategies for the development of effective vaccines and therapeutic combinations to deal with this viral outbreak. Overall, by the inclusion of various references, this review covers, in detail, the most important aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An eco-benign synthesis of pyrimidine derivatives 2a,b containing different functional groups with different electronic character starting from nitroalkenes 1a and 2b has been described. The structures for 1a and 2a,b have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The thermal data of the molecules pointed towards important structural aspects of their stability. The mechanism of their thermal decomposition is discussed. The thermodynamic parameters of the dissociation steps were evaluated and discussed. DFT calculations reveal that the compound 1a possesses a high calculated dipole moment value (8.28 D) which indicates its high reactivity towards its surrounding molecules.
