Search

Dark matter may self-interact through a continuum of low-mass states. This happens if dark matter couples to a strongly-coupled nearly-conformal hidden sector. This type of theory is holographically described by brane-localized dark matter interacting with bulk fields in a slice of 5D anti-de Sitter space. The long-range potential in this scenario depends on a non-integer power of the spatial separation, in contrast to the Yukawa potential generated by the exchange of a single 4D mediator. The resulting self-interaction cross section scales like a non-integer power of velocity. We identify the Born, classical and resonant regimes and investigate them using state-of-the-art numerical methods. We demonstrate the viability of our continuum-mediated framework to address the astrophysical small-scale structure anomalies. Investigating the continuum-mediated Sommerfeld enhancement, we demonstrate that a pattern of resonances can occur depending on the non-integer power. We consider a scalar field in a slice of Lorentzian five-dimensional AdS at arbitrary energies. We show that the presence of bulk interactions separate the behavior of the theory into two different regimes: Kaluza--Klein and continuum. We determine the transition scale between these regimes and show that UV brane correlation functions are independent of IR brane-localized operators for four-momenta beyond this transition scale. The same bulk interactions that induce the transition also give rise to cascade decays. We study these cascade decays for the case of a cubic self-interaction in the continuum regime. We find that the cascade decay progresses slowly towards the IR region and gives rise to soft spherical final states, in accordance with former results from both gravity and CFT. We identify a recursion relation between integrated squared amplitudes of different leg numbers and thus evaluate the total rate. We find that cascade decays in the continuum regime are exponentially suppressed. This feature completes the picture of the IR brane as an emergent sector as seen from the UV brane. We investigate how quantum dynamics affects the propagation of a scalar field in Lorentzian AdS. We work in momentum space, in which the propagator admits two spectral representations (denoted "conformal" and "momentum") in addition to a closed-form one, and all have a simple split structure. Focusing on scalar bubbles, we compute the imaginary part of the self-energy $ {\rm Im} \Pi$ in the three representations, which involves the evaluation of seemingly very different objects. We explicitly prove their equivalence in any dimension, and derive some elementary and asymptotic properties of $ {\rm Im} \Pi$. Using a WKB-like approach in the timelike region, we evaluate the propagator dressed with the imaginary part of the self-energy. We find that the dressing from loops exponentially dampens the propagator when one of the endpoints is in the IR region, rendering this region opaque to propagation. This suppression may have implications for field-theoretical model-building in AdS. We argue that in the effective theory (EFT) paradigm, opacity of the IR region induced by higher dimensional operators censors the region of EFT breakdown. New dynamics from hidden sectors may manifest as long-range forces between visible matter particles. The well-known case of Yukawa-like potentials occurs via the exchange of a single virtual particle. However, more exotic behavior is also possible. We present three classes of exotic potentials that are generated by relativistic theories: (i) quantum forces from the loop-level exchange of two virtual particles, (ii) conformal forces from a conformal sector, and (iii) emergent forces from degrees of freedom that only exist in the infrared regime of the theory. We discuss the complementarity of spin-dependent force searches in an effective field theory framework. In the context of upcoming new physics searches at the LHC, we investigate the impact of multidimensional differential rates in typical LHC analyses. We discuss the properties of shape information, and argue that multidimensional rates bring limited information in the scope of a discovery, but can have a large impact on model discrimination. We also point out subtleties about systematic uncertainties cancellations and the Cauchy-Schwarz bound on interference terms., 8 pages, 5 figures

We consider quantum field theory in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter background, possibly truncated by 4d branes. In the Euclidian version of this space, it is known that propagators exponentially decay when they go far enough towards the Poincar\'e horizon, i.e. deep enough into the IR region of the AdS bulk. In this note we show that an analogous property exists in Lorentzian AdS. The exponential suppression is found to occur in the presence of bulk interactions dressing the AdS propagators. We calculate one-loop gravitational dressing and find that the suppression effect comes from the scalar component of the 5d graviton. We then argue that, at least at strong coupling, this exponential decay censors the region of spacetime where the 5d effective field theory would become invalid. As an application we estimate the rate for the cascade decay of bulk fields---which are known to produce soft spherical events with high multiplicity---and find this rate to be exponentially suppressed., Comment: 28 pages, 2 figures, comments added, matches journal version

We discuss the simplified likelihood framework as a systematic approximation scheme for experimental likelihoods such as those originating from LHC experiments. We develop the simplified likelihood from the Central Limit Theorem keeping the next-to-leading term in the large $N$ expansion to correctly account for asymmetries. Moreover, we present an efficient method to compute the parameters of the simplified likelihood from Monte Carlo simulations. The approach is validated using a realistic LHC-like analysis, and the limits of the approximation are explored. Finally, we discuss how the simplified likelihood data can be conveniently released in the HepData error source format and automatically built from it, making this framework a convenient tool to transmit realistic experimental likelihoods to the community., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures. v2: Minor changes, references added, matches JHEP version. The studies of the Higgs boson couplings based on the recent and upcoming LHC data open up a new window on physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we propose a statistical guide to the consistent treatment of the theoretical uncertainties entering the Higgs rate fits. Both the Bayesian and frequentist approaches are systematically analysed in a unified formalism. We present analytical expressions for the marginal likelihoods, useful to implement simultaneously the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. We review the various origins of the theoretical errors (QCD, EFT, PDF, production mode contamination...). All these individual uncertainties are thoroughly combined with the help of moment-based considerations. The theoretical correlations among Higgs detection channels appear to affect the location and size of the best-fit regions in the space of Higgs couplings. We discuss the recurrent question of the shape of the prior distributions for the individual theoretical errors and find that a nearly Gaussian prior arises from the error combinations. We also develop the bias approach, which is an alternative to marginalisation providing more conservative results. The statistical framework to apply the bias principle is introduced and two realisations of the bias are proposed. Finally, depending on the statistical treatment, the Standard Model prediction for the Higgs signal strengths is found to lie within either the $68\%$ or $95\%$ confidence level region obtained from the latest analyses of the $7$ and $8$ TeV LHC datasets., 62 pages, 10 figures

We initiate a quantum treatment of chameleon-like particles, deriving classical and quantum forces directly from the path integral. It is found that the quantum force can potentially dominate the classical one by many orders of magnitude. We calculate the quantum chameleon pressure between infinite plates, which is found to interpolate between the Casimir and the integrated Casimir-Polder pressures, respectively in the limits of full screening and no screening. To this end we calculate the chameleon propagator in the presence of an arbitrary number of one-dimensional layers of material. For the E\"ot-Wash experiment, the five-layer propagator is used to take into account the intermediate shielding sheet, and it is found that the presence of the sheet enhances the quantum pressure by two orders of magnitude. As an example of implication, we show that in both the standard chameleon and symmetron models, large and previously unconstrained regions of the parameter space are excluded once the quantum pressure is taken into account., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. v3: More details on calculations added. This process can be probed at the Large Hadron Collider in central exclusive production of photon pairs in proton-proton collisions by tagging the surviving protons using forward proton detectors. Using a detailed simulation, we estimate the expected bounds on the ALP-photon coupling for a wide range of masses. We show that the proposed search is competitive and complementary to other collider bounds for masses above 600 GeV, especially for resonant ALP production between 600 GeV and 2 TeV. Proton tagging proves to be a powerful tool to suppress the background, which allows consideration of the hadronic decays of the Z boson in addition to the leptonic ones. We discuss the discovery potential for an integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 and 3000 fb−1. The sensitivity we obtain at 300 fb−1 goes beyond the one expected from LHC bounds on the Z → γγγ decay by about three orders of magnitude. The γZ channel provides important discriminatory information with respect to the exclusive γγ channel, as many particles beyond the Standard Model (such as a radion or Kaluza Klein gravitons) predict a signal in the latter but not the former. Unification of matter fields implies the existence of accidental permutation symmetries, which potentially remain immune to large quantum corrections up to the TeV scale. We investigate the case of a supersymmetric $SU(5)$ grand unified theory, where such a permutation symmetry is present in the up-type squark sector. We present a variety of tests allowing to challenge the $SU(5)$ hypothesis based on the observation of squarks at the LHC. These tests appear as relations among observables involving flavour-violating or chirality-flipping decays of squarks. Moreover, they rely on top-polarimetry and charm-tagging. As an example, we discuss the application to the scenario of Natural Supersymmetry, while more examples can be found in the related journal publications.

We observe that sub-GeV Dark Matter (DM) induces Casimir-Polder forces between nucleons, that can be accessed by experiments from nuclear to molecular scales. We calculate the nucleon-nucleon potentials arising in the DM effective theory and note that their main features are fixed by dimensional analysis and the optical theorem. Molecular spectroscopy and neutron scattering turn out be DM search experiments, and are found to be complementary to nucleon-based DM direct detection. The imperfect knowledge of the Higgs boson decay rates and cross sections at the LHC constitutes a critical systematic uncertainty in the study of the Higgs boson properties. We show that the full covariance matrix between the Higgs rates can be determined from the most elementary sources of uncertainty by a direct application of probability theory. We evaluate the error magnitudes and full correlation matrix on the set of Higgs cross sections and branching ratios at $\sqrt{s}=7$, $8$, $13$ and $14$ TeV, which are provided in ancillary files. A slight excess has been observed in the first data of photon-photon events at the 13 TeV LHC, that might be interpreted has a hint of physics beyond the Standard Model. The radial excitation of the global symmetry-breaking vacuum in composite Higgs models, called the "global Higgs", has been recently a focus of investigation. In this paper we study the prospects for detecting this composite scalar at the 13 TeV LHC. We compute the global Higgs production rates and estimate the discovery potential of a global Higgs decaying into top quark pairs and into Higgs and electroweak gauge bosons with subsequent hadronic decays. The global Higgs may also decay into fermion resonances such as top partners, providing a new window into compositeness. We show that top partner jets can be effectively unresolved in some regions of the parameter space. When the Standard Model is interpreted as the renormalizable sector of a low-energy effective theory, the effects of new physics are encoded into a set of higher dimensional operators. These operators potentially deform the shapes of Standard Model differential distributions of final states observable at colliders. We describe a simple and systematic method to obtain optimal estimations of these deformations when using numerical tools, like Monte Carlo simulations. A crucial aspect of this method is minimization of the estimation uncertainty: we demonstrate how the operator coefficients have to be set in the simulations in order to get optimal results. The uncertainty on the interference term turns out to be the most difficult to control and grows very quickly when the interference is suppressed. We exemplify our method by computing the deformations induced by the ${\cal O}_{3W}$ operator in $W^+W^-$ production at the LHC, and by deriving a bound on ${\cal O}_{3W}$ using $8$ TeV CMS data., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. v2: Minor corrections, references added, matches journal version

We investigate the possibilities of searching for a self-conjugate polarizable particle in the self-interactions of light. We first observe that polarizability can arise either from the exchange of mediator states or as a consequence of the inner structure of the particle. To exemplify this second possibility we calculate the polarizability of a neutral bosonic open string, and find it is described only by dimension-8 operators. Focussing on the spin-0 case, we calculate the light-by-light scattering amplitudes induced by the dimension-6 and 8 polarizability operators. Performing a simulation of exclusive diphoton production with proton tagging at the LHC, we find that the imprint of the polarizable dark particle can be potentially detected at 5$\sigma$ significance for mass and cutoff reaching values above the TeV scale, for $\sqrt{s}=$13~TeV and 300 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. If the polarizable dark particle is stable, it can be a dark matter candidate, in which case we argue this exclusive diphoton search may complement the existing LHC searches for polarizable dark matter., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures. v2: Comments added. We classify the complete set of dimension-5 operators relevant for the resonant production of a singlet of spin 0 or 2 linearly coupled to the Standard Model (SM). We compute the decay width of such states as a function of the effective couplings, and provide the matching to various well-motivated New Physics scenarios. We then investigate the possibility that one of these neutral resonances be at the origin of the excess in diboson production recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration. We perform a shape analysis of the excess under full consideration of the systematic uncertainties to extract the width $\Gamma_{\rm tot}$ of the hypothetical resonance, finding it to be in the range 26 GeV $, Comment: 31 pages

We elaborate on a recently found $SU(5)$ relation confined to the up-(s)quark flavour space, that remains immune to large quantum corrections up to the TeV scale. We investigate the possibilities opened by this new window on the GUT scale in order to find TeV-scale $SU(5)$ tests realizable at the LHC. We discuss the discovery potential of light-by-light scattering at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), induced by the Standard Model (SM) and by new exotic charged particles. Our simulation relies on intact proton detection in the planned forward detectors of CMS and ATLAS. The full four-photon amplitudes generated by any electrically charged particles of spins $1/2$ and $1$, including the SM processes involving loops of leptons, quarks and $W$ bosons are implemented in the Forward Physics Monte Carlo generator. Our method provides model-independent bounds on massive charged particles, only parametrized by the spin, mass and "effective charge" $Q_{\rm eff}$ of the new particle. We find that a new charged vector (fermion) with $Q_{\rm eff}=4$ can be discovered up to $m=640~\rm GeV$ ($m=300~\rm GeV$) with an integrated luminosity of $300~\rm fb^{-1}$ at the LHC. We also discuss the sensitivities to neutral particles such as a strongly-interacting heavy dilaton and warped Kaluza-Klein gravitons, whose effects could be discovered for masses in the multi-TeV range., 27 pages, 11 figures. We point out that the hypothesis of a SU(5)-like supersymmetric Grand Unified Theory (GUT) implies a generic relation within the flavour structure of up-type squarks. Contrary to other well-known SU(5) relations between the down-quark and charged lepton sectors, this relation remains exact in the presence of any corrections and extra operators. Moreover it remains valid to a good precision at the electroweak scale, and opens thus new possibilities for testing SU(5)-like GUTs. We derive the low-energy effective theory of observable light up-type squarks, that also constitutes a useful tool for squark phenomenology. We use this effective theory to determine how to test SU(5) relations at the LHC. Focussing on scenarios with light stops, compatible with Natural SUSY, it appears that simple tests involving ratios of event rates are sufficient to test the hypothesis of a SU(5)-like GUT theory. We consider the possibility that the diphoton excess at 750 GeV is caused by a new scalar resonance produced in photon fusion. This scenario is parametrised by only one relevant effective couplings and is thus minimal. We show that this setup can reproduce both the production rate and width of the resonance, and is not in conflict with the 8 TeV limits on the diphoton cross section. The scenario also predicts event rates for $WW$, $ZZ$, $Z\gamma$ final states. We suggest to perform precision measurements by studying light-by-light scattering with intact protons detected in forward detectors. We construct a simple model that shows that the required couplings can be achieved with new vectorlike, uncolored fermions (with a strong Yukawa coupling to the resonance) which may also account for the required width., Comment: 6 pages, minor changes, references added. We introduce a new kind of likelihood function based on the sequence of moments of the data distribution. Both binned and unbinned data samples are discussed, and the multivariate case is also derived. Building on this approach we lay out the formalism of shape analysis for signal searches. In addition to moment-based likelihoods, standard likelihoods and approximate statistical tests are provided. Enough material is included to make the paper self-contained from the perspective of shape analysis. We argue that the moment-based likelihoods can advantageously replace unbinned standard likelihoods for the search of non-local signals, by avoiding the step of fitting Monte-Carlo generated distributions. This benefit increases with the number of variables simultaneously analyzed. The moment-based signal search is exemplified and tested in various 1D toy models mimicking typical high-energy signal--background configurations. We present a technique to determine the scale of New Physics (NP) compatible with any set of data, relying on well-defined credibility intervals. Our approach relies on the statistical view of the effective field theory capturing New Physics at low energy. We introduce formally the notion of testable NP and show that it ensures integrability of the posterior distribution. We apply our method to the Standard Model Higgs sector in light of recent LHC data, considering two generic scenarios. In the scenario of democratic higher dimensional operators generated at one-loop, we find the testable NP scale to lie within $[10,260]$ TeV at $95\%$ Bayesian credibility level. In the scenario of loop-suppressed field strength-Higgs operators, the testable NP scale is within $[28,1200]$ TeV at $95\%$ Bayesian credibility level. The sensitivities to anomalous quartic photon couplings at the Large Hadron Collider are estimated using diphoton production via photon fusion. The tagging of the protons proves to be a very powerful tool to suppress the background and unprecedented sensitivities down to $6 \cdot 10^{-15}$\gev$^{-4}$ are obtained, providing a new window on extra dimensions and strongly-interacting composite states in the multi-TeV range. We investigate the possibilities of New Physics affecting the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector. An effective Lagrangian with dimension-six operators is used to capture the effect of New Physics. We carry out a global Bayesian inference analysis, considering the recent LHC data set including all available correlations, as well as results from Tevatron. Trilinear gauge boson couplings and electroweak precision observables are also taken into account. The case of weak bosons tensorial couplings is closely examined and NLO QCD corrections are taken into account in the deviations we predict. We consider two scenarios, one where the coefficients of all the dimension-six operators are essentially unconstrained, and one where a certain subset is loop suppressed. In both scenarios, we find that large deviations from some of the SM Higgs couplings can still be present, assuming New Physics arising at 3 TeV. In particular, we find that a significantly reduced coupling of the Higgs to the top quark is possible and slightly favored by searches on Higgs production in association with top quark pairs. The total width of the Higgs boson is only weakly constrained and can vary between 0.7 and 2.7 times the Standard Model value within 95% Bayesian credible interval (BCI). We also observe sizeable effects induced by New Physics contributions to tensorial couplings. A search for high mass photon pairs from the processes ${\mathrm e}^+ {\mathrm e}^- \to \ell^+ \ell^- \gamma \gamma\ $, ${\mathrm e}^+ {\mathrm e}^- \to {\mathrm \nu} \overline {\mathrm \nu} \gamma \gamma\ \mathrm e}^+ {\mathrm e}^- \to {\mathrm q} \overline {\mathrm q} \gamma \gamma\ $ and with the DELPHI detector at LEP I is reported. From a data sample containing 3.5 million hadronic ${\mathrm Z^0}\;$ decays, collected by DELPHI during the years 1991 to 1994, 79 events with two charged leptons and two isolated photons were selected with photon pair masses above 10 $\mathrm{GeV}/c^2\ $, where 76 $\pm\ $ 6 events were predicted from standard sources. In the same data sample, no ${\mathrm \nu} \overline {\mathrm \nu} \gamma \gamma\ $ candidates were found and no accumulation of events was visible for $\gamma \gamma\ $ masses above 10 $\mathrm{GeV}/c^2\ $ in the ${\mathrm q} \overline {\mathrm q} \gamma \gamma\ $ channel. Upper limits at 95\% confidence level on the ${\mathrm Z^0}\;$ branching ratios for the three different channels were extracted from the data. In the mass region $m_{\gamma \gamma}\ $ $ $ 30 $\mathrm{GeV}/c^2\ $ the limits obtained are between \mbox{3$\times 10^{-6} $}and \mbox{4$\times 10^{-6} $}.

We present a formulation of naturalness made in the framework of Bayesian statistics, which unravels the conceptual problems related to previous approaches. Among other things, the relative interpretation of the measure of naturalness turns out to be unambiguously established by Jeffreys' scale. Also, the usual sensitivity formulation (so-called Barbieri-Giudice measure) appears to be embedded in our formulation under an extended form. We derive the general sensitivity formula applicable to an arbitrary number of observables. Several consequences and developments are further discussed. We study supersymmetric models with a GUT-sized extra dimension, where both the Higgs fields and the SUSY breaking hidden sector are localized on a 4D brane. Exponential wave function profiles of the matter fields give rise to hierarchical structures in the Yukawa couplings and soft terms. Such structures can naturally explain hierarchical fermion masses and mixings, while at the same time alleviating the supersymmetric flavour problem. We discuss two sources of supersymmetry breaking, radion mediation and brane fields, and perform a detailed numerical analysis, thoroughly taking into account the proliferation of unknown O(1) coefficients that occurs in this class of models. It turns out that additional assumptions on supersymmetry breaking are necessary to evade the stringent experimental bounds on lepton flavour violation. The favourable regions of parameter space are then examined with regards to their LHC phenomenology. They generically feature heavy gluinos and squarks beyond current bounds.
