An off-shell representation of supersymmetry is a representation of the super Poincare algebra on a dynamically unconstrained space of fields. We describe such representations formally, in terms of the fields and their spacetime derivatives, and we interpret the physical concept of engineering dimension as an integral grading. We prove that formal graded off-shell representations of one-dimensional N-extended supersymmetry, i.e., the super Poincare algebra $\mathfrak {p}^{1|N}$ , correspond to filtered Clifford supermodules over Cl(N). We also prove that formal graded off-shell representations of two-dimensional (p,q)-supersymmetry, i.e., the super Poincare algebra $\mathfrak {p}^{1,1|p,q}$ , correspond to bifiltered Clifford supermodules over Cl(p + q). Our primary tools are Rees superalgebras and Rees supermodules, the formal deformations of filtered superalgebras and supermodules, which give a one-to-one correspondence between filtered spaces and graded spaces with even degree-shifting injections. This generalizes the machinery used by Gerstenhaber to prove that every filtered algebra is a deformation of its associated graded algebra. Our treatment extends the notion of Rees algebras and modules to filtrations which are compatible with a supersymmetric structure. We also describe the analogous constructions for bifiltrations and bigradings.

There exist myriads of off-shell worldline supermultiplets for (N{\leq}32)-extended supersymmetry in which every supercharge maps a component field to precisely one other component field or its derivative. A subset of these extends to off-shell worldsheet (p,q)-supersymmetry and is characterized by the twin theorems 2.1 and 2.2 in this note. The evasion of the obstruction defined in these theorems is conjectured to be sufficient for a worldline supermultiplet to extend to worldsheet supersymmetry; it is also a necessary filter for dimensional extension to higher-dimensional spacetime. We show explicitly how to "re-engineer" an Adinkra---if permitted by the twin theorems 2.1 and 2.2---so as to depict an off-shell supermultiplet of worldsheet (p,q)-supersymmetry., Comment: LaTeX 3 times, added reference, minor edits and typo correction

We give generalizations of extended Poincar\'e supergravity with {\it arbitrarily many} supersymmetries in the absence of central charges in three-dimensions by gauging its intrinsic global $~SO(N)$~ symmetry. We call these \alephnull (Aleph-Null) supergravity theories. We further couple a non-Abelian supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory and an Abelian topological BF theory to \alephnull supergravity. Our result overcomes the previous difficulty for supersymmetrization of Chern-Simons theories beyond $~N=4$. This feature is peculiar to the Chern-Simons and BF theories including supergravity in three-dimensions. We also show that dimensional reduction schemes for four-dimensional theories such as $~N=1$~ self-dual supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory or $~N=1$~ supergravity theory that can generate \alephnull globally and locally supersymmetric theories in three-dimensions. As an interesting application, we present \alephnull supergravity Liouville theory in two-dimensions after appropriate dimensional reduction from three-dimensions.

Adinkras are diagrams that describe many useful supermultiplets in D=1 dimensions. We show that the topology of the Adinkra is uniquely determined by a doubly even code. Conversely, every doubly even code produces a possible topology of an Adinkra. A computation of doubly even codes results in an enumeration of these Adinkra topologies up to N=28, and for minimal supermultiplets, up to N=32., 48 pages, a new version that combines arXiv:0811.3410 and parts of arXiv:0806.0050, for submission for publication

This paper investigates the d = 4, N = 4 Abelian, global Super-Yang Mills system (SUSY-YM). It is shown how the N = 2 Fayet Hypermultiplet (FH) and N = 2 vector multiplet (VM) are embedded within. The central charges provide a plethora of information as to further symmetries of the Lagrangian. Several of these symmetries are calculated to second order. It is hoped that investigations such as these may yield avenues to help solve the auxiliary field closure problem for d = 4, N = 4, SUSY-YM and the d = 4, N = 2 Fayet-Hypermultiplet, without using an infinite number of auxiliary fields., Comment: 47 pages, reworded text relating to central charges, renumbered pages, updated title page and references

The superform construction of supergravity actions, christened the "ectoplasm method," is based on the use of a closed super d-form in the case of d space-time dimensions. In known examples, such superforms are obtained by iteratively solving nontrivial cohomological problems. The latter usually makes this scheme no less laborious than the normal coordinate method for deriving component actions for matter-coupled supergravity. In this note we present an alternative procedure to generate required superforms in four space-time dimensions, which makes use of self-dual vector multiplets. It provides the shortest derivation of chiral actions in two different theories: (i) N = 1 old minimal supergravity; and (ii) N = 2 conformal supergravity. The N = 2 superform construction is developed here for the first time. Although our consideration is restricted to the case of four dimensions, a generalization to higher dimensions is plausible., 14 pages; V2: minor corrections

A minimal representation of the N = 8 extended worldline supersymmetry, known as the `ultra-multiplet', is closely related to a family of supermultiplets with the same, E(8) chromotopology. We catalogue their effective symmetries and find a Spin(4) x Z(2) subgroup common to them all, which explains the particular basis used in the original construction. We specify a constrained superfield representation of the supermultiplets in the ultra-multiplet family, and show that such a superfield representation in fact exists for all adinkraic supermultiplets. We also exhibit the correspondences between these supermultiplets, their Adinkras and the E(8) root lattice bases. Finally, we construct quadratic Lagrangians that provide the standard kinetic terms and afford a mixing of an even number of such supermultiplets controlled by a coupling to an external 2-form of fluxes., 13 Figures

The recent classification scheme of so-called adinkraic off-shell supermultiplets of N-extended worldline supersymmetry without central charges finds a combinatorial explosion. Completing our earlier efforts, we now complete the constructive proof that all of these trillions or more of supermultiplets have a superfield representation. While different as superfields and supermultiplets, these are still super-differentially related to a much more modest number of minimal supermultiplets, which we construct herein., Comment: 13 pages, integrated illustrations

We describe a new 1+1 dimensional N=(2,2) vector multiplet that naturally couples to semi chiral superfields in the sense that the gauged supercovariant derivative algebra is only consistent with imposing covariantly semi chiral superfield constraints. It has the advantages that its prepotentials shift by semi chiral superfields under gauge transformations. We also see that the multiplet relates the chiral vector multiplet with the twisted chiral vector multiplet by reducing to either multiplet under appropriate limits without being reducible in terms of the chiral and twisted chiral vector multiplet. This is explained from the superspace geometrical point of view as the result of possessing a symmetry under the discrete supercoordinate transformation that is responsible for mirror copies of supermultiplets. We then describe how to gauge a non linear sigma model with semi chiral superfields using the prepotentials of the new multiplet., Comment: 15 pages

We introduce a variety of four-dimensional N = 2 matter multiplets which have not previously appeared explicitly in the literature. Using these, we develop a class of supersymmetric actions supplying a context for a systematic exploration of N = 2 matter theories, some of which include Hypermultiplet sectors in novel ways. We construct an N = 2 supersymmetric field theory in which the propagating fields are realized off-shell exclusively as Lorentz scalars and Weyl spinors and which involves a sector with precisely the R-charge assignments characteristic of Hypermultiplets., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, PDF LaTeX

We analyze the group of maximal automorphisms of the N-extended worldline supersymmetry algebra, and its action on off-shell supermultiplets. This defines a concept of "holoraumy" that extends the notions of holonomy and curvature in a novel way and provides information about the geometry of the supermultiplet field-space. In turn, the "holoraumy" transformations of 0-brane dimensionally reduced supermultiplets provide information about Lorentz transformations in the higher-dimensional space–time from which the 0-brane supermultiplets are descended. Specifically, Spin(3) generators are encoded within 0-brane "holoraumy" tensors. Worldline supermultiplets are thus able to holographically encrypt information about higher-dimensional space–time geometry.

Using 4D, N=1 superfield techniques, a discussion of the 6D sigma-model possessing simple supersymmetry is given. Two such approaches are described. Foremost it is shown that the simplest and most transparent description arises by use of a doublet of chiral scalar superfields for each 6D hypermultiplet. A second description that is most directly related to projective superspace is also presented. The latter necessarily implies the use of one chiral superfield and one nonminimal scalar superfield for each 6D hypermultiplet. A separate study of models of this class, outside the context of projective superspace, is also undertaken., 35 pages, LaTeX. v3: some comments added, version to appear in JHEP

In this paper we discuss off-shell representations of N-extended supersymmetry in one dimension, ie, N-extended supersymmetric quantum mechanics, and following earlier work on the subject codify them in terms of certain graphs, called Adinkras. This framework provides a method of generating all Adinkras with the same topology, and so also all the corresponding irreducible supersymmetric multiplets. We develop some graph theoretic techniques to understand these diagrams in terms of a relatively small amount of information, namely, at what heights various vertices of the graph should be "hung". We then show how Adinkras that are the graphs of N-dimensional cubes can be obtained as the Adinkra for superfields satisfying constraints that involve superderivatives. This dramatically widens the range of supermultiplets that can be described using the superspace formalism and organizes them. Other topologies for Adinkras are possible, and we show that it is reasonable that these are also the result of constraining superfields using superderivatives. The family of Adinkras with an N-cubical topology, and so also the sequence of corresponding irreducible supersymmetric multiplets, are arranged in a cyclical sequence called the main sequence. We produce the N=1 and N=2 main sequences in detail, and indicate some aspects of the situation for higher N., LaTeX, 58 pages, 52 illustrations in color; minor typos corrected

Within a four dimensional manifestly N = 1 supersymmetric action, we show that Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) terms can be embedded in an extraordinarily simple manner into a purely chiral superaction. In order to achieve this result it is necessary to assign spin-0 and spin-1/2 degrees of freedom both to chiral superfields and as well to non-minimal scalar multiplets. We propose a new formulation for the effective low-energy action of 4D, N = 1 supersymmetric QCD that is consistent with holomorphy through fourth order in the pion superfield. After reduction to a 2D, N = 2 theory we find a new class of manifestly supersymmetric non-linear sigma models with torsion., Comment: 14 pages, UMDEPP 96-19

We present the Green-Schwarz $\s\-$model coupled to the $N=1$ {\it {supersymmetric}} Yang-Mills and supergravity in a four-dimensional space-time with the indefinite signature $(+,+,-,-)$. We first confirm the $\k\-$invariance of the Green-Schwarz action, and show that all the $\b\-$functions for the backgrounds vanish consistently after the use of their superfield equations. Subsequently, we inspect the supersymmetric {\it self-duality} conditions, that have been developed in our previous paper on the Yang-Mills and supergravity backgrounds. Remarkably, the Majorana-Weyl spinor dictating the {\it supersymmetric self-duality} conditions is consistent with the couplings of Green-Schwarz superstring. Such Green-Schwarz superstring is supposed to be the underlying theory of the {\it supersymmetric self-dual} Yang-Mills theory, which is conjectured to generate {\it all} exactly soluble supersymmetric systems in lower dimensions., Comment: 11 pages

We construct a model of an electrically charged magnetic dipole with arbitrary N-extended world-line supersymmetry, which exhibits a supersymmetric Zeeman effect. By including supersymmetric constraint terms, the ambient space of the dipole may be tailored into an algebraic variety, and the supersymmetry broken for almost all parameter values. A 6D, N=1 projective superspace formulation is given in which the above multiplets naturally emerge. The covariant superspace quantization of these multiplets is studied in details.

The linearised solutions to constraints in two-dimensional (2,0) supergravity are given. The authors derive the superconformal ghost action in superspace. The procedure for deriving the non-linear (p, q) geometries of the (p, q+1) and (p+1, q) local superspaces is given. They apply this to the rewriting of the (1,1) NSR superstring in (1,0) superspace and expressing the (2,0) supergravity constraints in the lower superspace. Finally, a new form of D=2, N=1 supergravity is presented.

The authors give the constraints for N=2 supergravity in terms of N=1 supergravity and matter fields. They solve the constraints to second order in the matter fields, keeping full nonlinearity in the N=1 supergravity fields, and give the action to the same order. This is sufficient for one-loop background superfield calculations.

The origin of world-sheet supersymmetry in the free-fermion models used in many constructions of four-dimensional heterotic strings and superstrings is shown to be due to the quantum-mechanical effect of an anomaly. A component action which may be used as the basis for studying supermodular invariance on an arbitrary genus Riemann surface and a superspace formulation are given.

A systematic and manifestly supersymmetric procedure for supersymmetrization of general (curvature)2-terms in N = 2 supergravity in six dimensions (D = 6) is presented in superspace. The general form of new terms for the supersymmetrization in supertranslation rules is given. As a by-product, the superspace structure of quaternionic Kahler manifolds is elucidated. Our method is the D = 6 application of our previously established formulation for the D = 10, N = 1 supergravity with the O(α′) superstring corrections.

The authors use previously derived results to write an action which describes the coupling of a set of string coordinates to simple unidexterous world-sheet supergravity. They demonstrate the presence of the fermionic symmetry that implies decoupling of unphysical string states, even when local (1,0) supersymmetry is realised on the world sheet of the string.

- Abstract
In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. professed, "We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop…. And I've seen the Promised Land." Sadly, 55 years later, the United States may have future difficult days regarding fair access to higher education for peoples of diverse demographic backgrounds. Given the Supreme Court's conservative majority, all signs point to a decision that will make achieving racial diversity at all, especially at highly selective universities, impossible.
