Abstract

In order to evaluate the influence of plasticizers on the behavior of the dielectric properties of polymers intended for the elaboration of flexible sensors, we have studied the influence of the addition of glycerol (10 wt%–40 wt%) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Once processed, the PVA films were not subjected to any particular annealing and they were dried at room temperature for 24 h before being characterized. This choice allows both to take advantage of the presence of water in the bulk of the material, which will help to make the PVA more flexible (increase of plasticization effect produced by extra‐H‐bonding) and avoid a transient behavior of water absorption into the material, as we could verify. DSC and FTIR investigations confirm good intermolecular interaction between vinyl polymer chains, glycerol, and water molecules. Dielectric spectroscopy analysis, carried out in [25°C–110°C] temperature and [0.1 Hz–1 MHz] frequency ranges, reveals a significant increase in the dielectric constant when the glycerol content is higher (at 0.1 Hz: 322 for pure PVA, 1.3 × 106 with 40 wt% of glycerol). Polar hydrogen bonds introduced by the glycerol are the main reason for this increase. Ionic conductivity induced by these dipoles dominates the loss tangent response of the material. The activation energy obtained from the DC conductivity plateau obeys to a conventional Arrhenius law with a decreasing value at highest glycerol contents (1.35 eV for pure PVA against 0.46 eV with 40 wt% of glycerol). Abstract

In this work, a deep insight is given into the dielectric properties and the humidity response of flexible polymer matrices, composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycerol (Gly), using silver nanowire networks as transparent electrodes (AgNW TE). These electrodes, known for their high electrical conductivity, optical transparency, and excellent flexibility, are deposited here by open‐air, scalable spray coating technique. Analysis of the dielectric constant ε′ and loss tangent tanδ according to the density of the AgNWs shows that the latter do not cover the entire surface with PVA and induces an interfacial polarization effect. Wide frequency range of impedance spectroscopy (1 Hz to 1 MHz) on both, PVA‐Gly samples with AgNW TE (4 Ω sq−1) networks electrodes and sputtered silver electrodes (Ag bulk el), reveal no significant change in ε′ and tanδ. Finally, the humidity sensing properties of PVA‐Gly exhibit good response between 20% to 90% humidity range and low hysteresis. This is related to the non‐continuous structure of AgNW TE. At 100 Hz, the PVA‐10 wt% Gly presents high sensitivity of 0.08 nF/% RH with an hysteresis value of about 1.5% at 70% RH. These results indicate that AgNW networks show great potential for integration in transparent and flexible humidity sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; In this work, C2-Methylated [C 3 DMIM + ][I − ] versus C2-Protonated [C 3 MIM + ][I − ] Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids containing iodide anion, have been synthesized and characterized using 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy methods. In order to investigate the methylation effect on thermal properties, we rely to three additional thermal analysis techniques. The thermal behavior confirmed that the methylated [C 3 DMIM + ][I − ] IL is more stable than the protonated one [C 3 MIM + ][I − ].The conductivity and dielectric relaxation properties of both ILs have been investigated in the frequency range [10 −2 , 10 7 Hz] and the temperature ranging between −30°C and 60°C. Dielec-tric permittivity studies show that the substitution of the hydrogen atom by a methyl group has a significant impact in both the realε′ and imaginary ε′′ parts. In addition, the analysis of the observed relaxation times for the protonated IL [C 3 MIM + ][I-] showed Arrhenius-type temperature dependence for the temperatures ranging between 20°C and 60°C − and VFT temperature dependence for the temperatures ranging between −20°C and 20°C − , while, the methylated IL [C 3 DMIM + ][I − ] showed Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman-type temperature dependence in the entire investigated temperature range − 30°C to 60°C. The representation of σ″ (ν, T) shows the buildup of the electrochemical double layer and interfacial effect. However the real part of complex conductivity follows the empirical Jonscher equation. The determined dc-conductivity of both investigated Ionic liquids present a new behavior regarding the thermal activation an anomalous thermal activation behavior. It follows an Ar-rhenius relation at lower temperatures and then reach a steady state values at higher temperatures.

Abstract

In this study, we investigate the temperature-dependent dielectric response of dabcoHBF4 molecular switchable dielectric materials. This compound made of polycrystals has been shaped into pellets under different controlled applied pressures [0.2–1 GPa]. The dielectric analysis carried out on these samples showed that the mechanical stresses induced by this shaping pressure had a significant effect on the value of the dielectric constant in both the ferroelectric and the paraelectric phase. However, the impact of this pressure remains secondary in the AC electrical conductivity, determined for the first time in these compounds. Thus, conductivity values around 2 × 10–7 S/cm in the ferroelectric phase and 2 × 10–6 S/cm in the paraelectric phase were found. The behavior of these compounds over wide frequency ranges [1–1 MHz] and temperature ramps [0.5–10 K/min] revealed that the frequency had no effect on the transition temperature at the difference of temperature rate as expected in most ferroelectric materials. When decreasing the frequency, the dielectric constant gains in value and can reach values higher than 50 in the ferroelectric phase and 1000 in the paraelectric phase with a frequency solicitation at 10 Hz. At lower frequencies, the Curie–Weiss law is lost in the paraelectric regime and an enhanced rise of the dielectric constant with increasing temperature probably reflects an interfacial polarization mechanism. Finally, this dielectric analysis in frequency, temperature (323–403 K) and along temperature ramps allowed to extract analytical laws of behavior associating some of these parameters. For example, one of these equations will be useful in the choice of the temperature ramp to be applied to optimize the switching time between a ferroelectric and a paraelectric state according to a condition on the value of the desired dielectric constant at the low and high states in the implementation of memories. International audience; Dans ce travail, nous présentons un prototype de générateur électrostatique souple pouvant être incorporé au niveau du genou pour produire de l'énergie lors de la marche ou de la course à pied. Ce générateur, complètement autonome, s'appuie sur l'incorporation d'un électret qui joue le rôle de réservoir de charges et d'un polymère électroactif de type silicone. L'originalité vient du matériau électret constitué d'un polymère de la famille des parylènes fluorés et de la géométrie du dispositif permettant à la fois d'optimiser les performances mécaniques et électriques de la structure.

Abstract

International audience; Among the different technologies for kinetic energy harvesting, dielectric elastomers generators (DEGs) may represent a promising solution for supplying power to wearable low power consumption sensors and devices. These electrostatic generators provide a low-cost and lightweight solution to harvest high electrical energy densities from the mechanical deformation of an elastomeric membrane. The main disadvantage of these structures is the need of an external high voltage supply to perform the energetic cycle. In order to overcome this limitation and have a completely autonomous energy scavenger, our research group has been working since 2012, on coupling dielectric elastomers with electret materials (i.e. insulator materials that can hold a permanent electric charge over a long period of time). In the present work, a new hybrid solution for wearable energy harvesters based on DEG will be presented. This new autonomous device is based on the combination of a DEG with a piezoelectric material, which is used as new polarization source for the DEG energetic cycle. The working principle and the first results obtained on this new prototype are presented and a comparison between the two polarization solutions (electret and piezoelectric materials) is discussed.

Abstract

Parylene C is used in many applications due to its high properties but it remains a material with moderate performance as long as it is intended for use as an electret. Hence, the generally accepted idea, rightly so, in the scientific and industrial community not to necessarily select parylene (i.e., parylene C) for applications where the endurance of the electret is a strong criterion. Our study provided a new perspective on the performance of parylenes as electret. In this case, we will talk about fluorinated Parylenes of the VT‐4 type and especially AF‐4 variant. Their thermal stability is outstanding and a charge stability is almost total up to 100 °C. A 50% reduction in the charge is recorded at a temperature as high as of 220 °C (9 μm thick Parylene AF‐4), making it one of the most efficient polymer electrets to date. Negatively and positively charged Parylene AF‐4 electrets presented similar performance over long durations, which is out of ordinary for the commonly employed polymeric electrets. Finally, these fluorinated polymers are therefore particularly promising new candidates for applications in electret‐based converters for energy harvesting. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Abstract

A thermal treatment below the crystallization temperature followed by rapid cooling down was adopted onto as-deposited BaTiO3 (BTO) amorphous films to freeze the microstructure activated at annealed temperature. A large increase of dielectric constant from 19 to 329 was observed at 0.1 Hz for the BTO film annealed at 600 °C for 60 min. Subsequently, three separated dielectric relaxations were exploited as a function of the frequency and temperature. Such dielectric responses were analyzed in terms of the activation energy. The evolution of oxygen vacancy with temperature can be invoked as being responsible for the observed dielectric relaxations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Resistive Random-Access Memories (ReRAMs, or memristors), are attracting industry attention as a new technology to replace Flash nonvolatile memories. ReRAMs make use of resistance switching in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures which are subjected to voltage biasing. Up to now, attention was focused on dc resistance transition. Less attention has been paid to the impedance variation, i.e. to the influence of voltage biasing on ac conductance and capacitance in ReRAM devices.In a recent work on HfO2 ReRAMs [1], we demonstrated that the capacitance, and more generally the imaginary part of RRAM devices, can also be switched by external bias. This paves the way for the realization of capacitive switching memories, or memcapacitors. Besides digital memory applications, memcapacitors could also be used in a broad range of electronic applications, such as reconfigurable RF circuits. From the fundamental point of view, impedance studies can provide information about conduction mechanisms and related switching phenomena.This work aims to better understand the mechanisms of ac conductance and capacitance variation in ReRAM devices. Studied devices are HfO2 MIM structures elaborated by atomic layer deposition. Devices are subjected to a constant dc voltage bias, and the impedance (real and imaginary parts) is recorded as a function of time. This allows us to follow kinetics of impedance switching, i.e. of both the ac conductance and the capacitance transition. Measurements are carried out at different frequencies and at different temperatures. The frequency and temperature dependence of the impedance in the high and low resistive states is discussed along ac conduction and polarization models implying intrinsic and bias-induced defects. Study of the capacitance switching time, as a function of bias, brings further information about the generation rate of defects which control impedance transition.

Abstract

International audience; Les élastomères diélectriques sont de plus en plus utilisés pour créer des transducteurs dans de nombreux domaines industriels : interface haptique, robotique, biomimétisme, énergie. Dans le domaine de l'énergie, le développement de générateurs électrostatiques souples tient une large place. Toutefois, le courant de fuite diminue l'efficacité et la durée de vie des dispositifs utilisant ces matériaux. Cette étude concerne donc l'influence des facteurs externes (étirement, température) sur les propriétés électriques du polyacrylate VHB4910, un des matériaux largement utilisés pour créer des générateurs. Nous relevons que le courant de fuite augmente avec l'augmentation de l'étirement. Ce comportement peut se combiner avec l'effet de la température.

Further, the impedance value can be tuned by the adjustment of both resistance and capacitance values giving the MEM-Impedance (MEM-Z). In a recent work on HfO2 MEM-Z [1], we demonstrated that the imaginary part of Resistive Random-Access Memories could be switched by external bias.Thus, such devices could be used in tunable electronic circuits , such as reconfigurable impedance matching network, reconfigurable amplifiers, programmable filters and oscillators. In order to make possible these applications, a good control of the impedance value and the possibility to change the impedance range of use by an external excitation will be necessary.In this work, we first present new capabilities of HfO2 MEM-Z structures elaborated by atomic layer deposition (ALD). For that, various external excitations were tested as the amplitude of the alternating voltage, the temperature (from 25°C to 125°C), the frequency of the signal. Results will be discussed as a function of these excitations and their combination on the value of resistance and capacitance and on the range of set – reset.In a complementary study, we developed thin ALD TiO2-HfO2 stacks to create MEM-Z structures. The peculiar migration of defects which control impedance transition in such structures allows obtaining new performances for electronic applications

Abstract

International audience; Dielectric elastomers such as 3M VHB4910 acrylate film have been widely used for electromechanical energyconversion such as actuators, sensors and generators, due to their lightweight, high efficiency, low cost and high energydensity. Mechanical and electric properties of such materials have been deeply investigated according to variousparameters (temperature, frequency, pre-stress, nature of the compliant electrodes…). Models integrating analytic lawsdeduced from experiments increase their accuracy. Nevertheless, leakage current and electrical breakdown reduce theefficiency and the lifetime of devices made with these polymers. These two major phenomena are not deeplyinvestigated in the literature. Thus, this paper describes the current-voltage characteristics of acrylate 3M VHB4910 andinvestigates the stability of the current under high electric field (kV) for various temperatures (from 20°C to 80°C) andover short (300 s) and long (12h) periods. Experimental results show that, with gold electrodes at ambient temperature,the current decreases with time to a stable value corresponding to the conduction current. This decrease occurs during 6hours, whereas in the literature values of current at short time (less than 1 hour) are generally reported. This decreasecan be explained by relaxations mechanisms in the polymer. Schottky emission and Poole-Frenkel emission are bothevaluated to explain the leakage current. It emerges from this study that the Schottky effect constitutes the mainmechanism of electric current in the 3M VHB4910. For high temperatures, the steady state is reached quickly. To end first results on the leakage current changes for pre-stretch VHB4910 complete this study.
