Wildlife parasite communities are important for an OneHealth approach. The external environment impacts host-associated communities directly and via the hosts. Hosts in poor body condition are more susceptible to infection and parasite mode of transmission will affect occurrence: rural environments with better availability of intermediate hosts favour trophic transmission, while urban environments, often with dense host populations, favour direct transmission. We here study helminth communities within their synanthropic red fox (Vulpes vulpes) hosts (155 intestinal samples) using DNA metabarcoding of multiple marker genes (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, COI). Controlling for sampling bias by incorporating DNA quantity and quality into models, we analysed the effect of environmental (urbanisation, seasonality) and host-intrinsic (weight, age, sex) variables on helminth communities. Helminth diversity was increased in younger hosts, in foxes with lower body weight and in those found in winter and spring. Host intrinsic drivers had smaller effects on the composition of the community, which was impacted by urbanisation, dependent on parasite transmission mode: surprisingly, transmission in two-host lifecycles was more pronounced in urban Berlin than in rural Brandenburg. Our results disagree with the prevailing hypothesis that trophically transmitted helminths are less prevalent in urban areas than in rural areas. Environmental drivers, i.e. urbanisation, affected each helminth species in the community differently, and we cannot generalise from helminth traits to their occurrences in urbanised areas. Finding co-infestations with multiple helminths and high infection intensity associated with poor body condition, however, might be relevant for a OneHealth approach.

While information on individual differences in digesta mean retention time (MRT) might be interesting when selecting phenotypes for digestive efficiency, MRT measurements are prohibitively labour-intensive for large-scale application. Therefore, more easily measured proxies of MRT might be helpful. We used the opportunity of an experiment applying saliva stimulant in cattle to investigate the effect of different individual chewing behaviour on fluid and particle MRT with a consistent diet. Four non-lactating cattle (670-850 kg body mass [BM]) were used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design, treated with the saliva stimulant pilocarpine in dosages of 0, 1, 2.5 and 5 mg/kg BM per day. The cattle were fed hay with dry matter intake (DMI) assigned according to their metabolic body weight. MRT in the whole gastrointestinal tract (GIT), the reticulorumen (RR) and the distal tract were measured using Co-EDTA, Cr-mordanted fibre and La-mordanted fibre as markers representing fluid, small particles (2 mm) and large particles (1 cm), respectively. The chewing behaviour was measured via noseband pressure sensor and expressed as chewing frequency (chews per time) and chewing intensity (chews per DMI), both for total chewing (ingestion plus rumination) and rumination chewing alone. The animals differed considerably in chewing behaviour and MRT measures. BM did not show a significant effect on chewing behaviour and MRT measures, though it tended to negatively correlated to total chewing intensity. Chewing intensity exerted a significant negative influence on MRT of fluid and particles in the RR, which was not the case for chewing frequency. Chewing frequency showed a significant relationship with MRT of large particles in the GIT. We suggest that chewing behaviour could influence MRT in two ways: (i) by affecting saliva production via the masticatory-salivary reflex and subsequently, the fluid inflow to the RR; (ii) by contributing to particle size reduction. Should the link between chewing behaviour and MRT be corroborated in larger studies, chewing measures, with their large interindividual variation, could emerge as an easy-to-measure proxy for MRT characteristics., Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, 107 (2), ISSN:0931-2439, ISSN:1439-0396

Since heritability of CH4 emissions in ruminants was demonstrated, various attempts to generate large individual animal CH4 data sets have been initiated. Predicting individual CH4 emissions based on equations using milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectra is currently considered promising as a low-cost proxy. However, the CH4 emission predicted by MIR in individuals still has to be confirmed by measurements. In addition, it remains unclear how low CH4 emitting cows differ in intake, digestion, and efficiency from high CH4 emitters. In the current study, putatively low and putatively high CH4 emitting Brown Swiss cows were selected from the entire Swiss herdbook population (176,611 cows), using an MIR-based prediction equation. Eventually, 15 low and 15 high CH4 emitters from 29 different farms were chosen for a respiration chamber (RC) experiment in which all cows were fed the same forage-based diet. Several traits related to intake, digestion, and efficiency were quantified over 8 d, and CH4 emission was measured in 4 open circuit RC. Daily CH4 emissions were also estimated using data from 2 laser CH4 detectors (LMD). The MIR-predicted CH4 production (g/d) was quite constant in low and high emission categories, in individuals across sites (home farm, experimental station), and within equations (first available and refined versions). The variation of the MIR-predicted values was substantially lower using the refined equation. However, the predicted low and high emitting cows (n = 28) did not differ on average in daily CH4 emissions measured either with RC or estimated using LMD, and no correlation was found between CH4 predictions (MIR) and CH4 emissions measured in RC. When individuals were recategorized based on CH4 yield measured in RC, differences between categories of 10 low and 10 high CH4 emitters were about 20%. Low CH4 emitting cows had a higher feed intake, milk yield, and residual feed intake, but they differed only weakly in eating pattern and digesta mean retention times. Low CH4 emitters were characterized by lower acetate and higher propionate proportions of total ruminal volatile fatty acids. We concluded that the current MIR-based CH4 predictions are not accurate enough to be implemented in breeding programs for cows fed forage-based diets. In addition, low CH4 emitting cows have to be characterized in more detail using mechanistic studies to clarify in more detail the properties that explain the functional differences found in comparison with other cows.

A new and uniquely structured matrix of mammalian phenotypes,MaTrics(MammalianTraits for Comparative Genomics) in a digital form is presented. By focussing on mammalian species for which genome assemblies are available,MaTricsprovides an interface between mammalogy and comparative genomics.MaTricswas developed within a project aimed to find genetic causes of phenotypic traits of mammals usingForward Genomics.This approach requires genomes and comprehensive and recorded information on homologous phenotypes that are coded as discrete categories in a matrix.MaTricsis an evolving online resource providing information on phenotypic traits in numeric code; traits are coded either as absent/present or with several states as multistate. The state record for each species is linked to at least one reference (e.g., literature, photographs, histological sections, CT scans, or museum specimens) and soMaTricscontributes to digitalization of museum collections. Currently,MaTricscovers 147 mammalian species and includes 231 characters related to structure, morphology, physiology, ecology, and ethology and available in a machine actionable NEXUS-format*. FillingMaTricsrevealed substantial knowledge gaps, highlighting the need for phenotyping efforts. Studies based on selected data fromMaTricsand usingForward Genomicsidentified associations between genes and certain phenotypes ranging from lifestyles (e.g., aquatic) to dietary specializations (e.g., herbivory, carnivory). These findings motivate the expansion of phenotyping inMaTricsby filling research gaps and by adding taxa and traits. Only databases likeMaTricswill provide machine actionable information on phenotypic traits, an important limitation to genomics.MaTricsis available within the data repository Morph·D·Base (www.morphdbase.de).

Numerous studies have examined whether the primary and/or secondary sex ratio in mammals, including humans, deviates from an equilibrium of 1:1. Although effect size in the sex ratio variation is expected to be low, a large sample size allows the identification of even small deviations from parity. In this study, we investigated whether the sex ratio of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) offspring at birth approaches parity, using a large data set from roe deer offspring tagged in Baden-Württemberg (Germany, 1972–2019, N = 12,437). In addition, a systematic re-analysis of available data on the secondary sex ratios of roe deer was conducted to test whether our finding withstood the accumulation of further data. The null hypothesis that the sex ratio of roe deer (prenatal sex ratio and sex ratio at birth) approaches parity was rejected. Moreover, the secondary sex ratio of roe deer offspring deviated from the male-biased mean for relatively cold or warm weather conditions during autumn and winter. Our study provides strong evidence for a male-biased sex ratio in a large herbivore and weak evidence for variations in the secondary sex ratio owing to environmental conditions. The pattern is highly relevant in the context of climate change and its impact on the population dynamics of large herbivores.

Intrinsic to several hypotheses explaining the evolution of foraging behavior complexity, such as proto-tool use, is the assumption that more complex ingestive behaviors are adaptations allowing individuals to access difficult to procure but nutritionally or energetically rewarding foods. However, nutritional approaches to understanding this complexity have been underutilized. The goal of this study was to evaluate potential nutritional determinants of two unusual foraging behaviors, fruit cracking with anvils and seed reingestion, by adult male western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) at Fongoli, Senegal during the baobab (Adansonia digitata) fruit season. We examined these behaviors in relation to nutrient and energy intake, and compared macronutrient and energy concentrations found in baobab fruits to other plant foods. Adult males ingested at least 31 distinct foods from 23 plant species. Baobab fruit comprised the majority of daily energy intake (68 ± 34%, range: 0%-98%). The energetic concentration of baobab fruit varied by phenophase and part ingested, with ripe and semi-ripe fruit ranking high in energy return rate. Males preferred ripe and semi-ripe baobab fruit but unripe fruit intake was higher overall. The seed kernels were high in protein and fat relative to fruit pulp, and these kernels were easier to access during the unripe stage. During the ripe stage, seed kernels were accessible by reingestion, after the seed coat was softened during gut passage. In addition to providing macronutrients and energy, baobab fruit was a relatively abundant food source. We conclude that baobab pulp and seed are high quality foods at Fongoli during the baobab season because they are nutritionally balanced, high in energy, and relatively abundant in the environment. These nutritional and abundance characteristics may explain, in part, why these chimpanzees use anvils and reingestion to access a mechanically challenging food.

Various feeds for ruminants have been identified that help to mitigate the greenhouse gas methane. However, even when there has been success in suppressing absolute methane emissions, intake, digestibility, and performance often decline in parallel. Ideal dietary levels of effective feeds would reduce methane production without affecting performance-related variables. Such favorable associative effects have been demonstrated in vitro by combining a high-quality forage with plants rich in phenols. In the present study, the tannin-rich leaves of hazel (Corylus avellana) gradually replaced (from 0 to 820 g/kg) a high-quality forage (dried alfalfa) in 20 types of experimental pellets fed to 20 mid-to-late lactating cows. Additionally, the cows were fed a mixed basal ration and some concentrate. The proportion of hazel in the 20 complete diets ranged from 0 to 400 g/kg dry matter. After 14 days of adaptation, 8 days were used for intensive sampling of feces (including markers for determining digesta retention time), urine, and milk. In addition, cows stayed for 2 days in open-circuit respiration chambers. Hazel leaves reduced the feed intake only slightly. Digestibility declined and mean digesta retention time was prolonged with increasing hazel proportion, likely due to the lower feeding value of the hazel leaves compared to the alfalfa. As aimed for, there were no significant effects on energy-corrected milk yield, body energy, and body N retention with increasing hazel intake, even though methane emission clearly declined in absolute term and per unit of digestible organic matter and tended to decrease per unit of energy corrected milk. In addition, increasing hazel proportions strongly shifted N excretion from urinary N (which declined from about 300 to 100 g/kg N intake) to fecal N. This could also be anticipated from the sharp decline in milk urea concentration (from about 35 to 10 mg/dL). In conclusion, hazel leaves as a feed supplement for dairy cows showed a high palatability within 3 weeks of feeding in dairy cows and great potential to mitigate emissions of methane and nitrogen in volatile form at maintained production levels. No favorable associative dosage effects seem to exist when combining tannin-rich hazel leaves with the high-quality forage alfalfa in a different proportions to a mixed basal ration. However, the present study is one of the few, where it was possible to mitigate noxious emissions of dairy cows by feeding a tannin rich feed supplement without concomitant negative impact on the animal's performance., Animal Feed Science and Technology, 276, ISSN:0377-8401, ISSN:1873-2216

Many small herbivores practice cecotrophy - the ingestion of special feces enriched in microbial protein by colonic separation mechanisms (CSM). In digesta passage experiments, secondary marker excretion peaks in feces are considered indicative of marker-reingestion via cecotrophy, but corroboration by behavioral observation was lacking so far. The paca (Cuniculus paca), a Neotropical hystricomorph rodent, produces two different kinds of feces (hard and soft) and practices cecotrophy either directly (from the anus) or indirectly (from a pile of defecated feces, mostly when hard and soft feces are defecated together). To investigate effects of diet on cecotrophy, we monitored cecotrophy behavior and digesta passage marker excretion of solute and particle markers in four adult pacas, at constant food intake, on four diets varying in protein and fiber content. Marker excretion patterns suggested a 'mucus-trap' CSM typical for hystricomorph rodents, and showed secondary peaks of a similar time lag after cecotrophy as the primary marker peak after marker feeding. However, not every cecotrophy event was followed by a secondary marker peak. On higher fiber/lower protein diets, the number of cecotrophy bouts, the duration of cecotrophy, the number of secondary marker peaks and the difference between solute and particle marker retention increased, whereas the proportion of indirect cecotrophy decreased, indicating a higher degree of digesta phase separation on these diets. Compared to hard feces, soft feces were particularly enriched in solute marker concentration. Cecotrophy depends on a CSM that varies in its efficiency with the nutrient composition of the diet.

Researching these traits revealed substantial knowledge gaps, highlighting the need for substantial phenotyping efforts in the genomic era. Using the trait information documented inMaTrics, previous Forward Genomics screens identified changes in genes that are associated with various phenotypes, ranging from fully-aquatic lifestyle to dietary specializations. These results motivate the continuous expansion of phenotype information, both by filling research gaps or by adding additional taxa and traits.MaTricsis digitally available online within the data repository Morph·D·Base (www.morphdbase.de).

The influence of phenol-rich dietary grapeseed extract on performance, energy and N balance and methane production was determined in sixteen lambs and thirteen goat kids (body weight 20·5 and 19·0 kg, 2 months of age, day 1 of study). Half of the animals received a concentrate containing grapeseed extract, and the others received concentrate without grapeseed extract (total extractable phenols analysed 27 v. 9 g/kg dietary DM; concentrate and hay 1:1). Diets were fed for 7 weeks with 1 week for determining intake, excretion and gaseous exchange in metabolism crates and respiration chambers. Overall, there was an adverse effect of the phenolic diet on apparent N digestibility and body N retention. Faecal N loss as proportion of N intake increased while urinary N loss declined. Relative to N intake, total N excretion was higher and body N retention lower in goat kids than lambs. Diets and animal species had no effect on methane emissions. The saliva of the goat kids had a higher binding capacity for condensed tannins (CT). Goat kids on the phenolic diet had higher CT concentrations in faeces and excreted more CT compared with the lambs (interaction species × diet P < 0·001). The lambs had overall higher (P < 0·001) urinary phenol concentrations than the goat kids (2·19 v. 1·48 g/l). The negative effect on body N retention and lack of effect on methane emissions make the use of the extract in the dosage applied not appealing. Species differences need to be considered in future studies.

Nonstaple food is a food resource which sole consumption does not allow themaintenance of regular physiological functions, thus constituting a minor portion ofan individual's diet. Many primates consume nonstaple food such as meat, insects,and fungi. Hypotheses on the dietary importance of nonstaple food include its roleas fallback food and as source of specific nutrients. We tested these two hypothesesby investigating mycophagy (i.e., the consumption of fungi) in a population of wildbonobos in the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, DRC. Specifically, we examined therelationship between fungus consumption and various factors relevant to bonobofeeding ecology (i.e., fruit abundance and the consumption of other food types).Additionally, we measured the deviation from linear travel when bonobos searchedfor fungi to evaluate the nature of fungus consumption (e.g., opportunistic or tar-geted). Lastly, we examined the nutritional content of the major fungus speciesconsumed (Hysterangium bonobo) to test whether this food item was potentiallyconsumed as source of specific nutrients. We found that bonobos spent a higherproportion of their time feeding on fungi when fruit abundance was higher, in-dicating that fungi were not consumed as a fallback food. Moreover, bonobos de-viated from linear travel when visiting fungus patches more than observed whenvisiting fruit patches, suggesting that they actively sought out fungi. Lastly, initialanalyses suggest that H. bonobo samples contained high concentration of sodium.Collectively, these results suggest that subterranean fungi appear to be attractivefood source to Kokolopori bonobos, and that mycophagy may serve to supplementnutrients, like sodium, in bonobo diet.

Studying species interactions and niche segregation under human pressure provides important insights into species adaptation, community functioning and ecosystem stability. Due to their high plasticity in behaviour and diet, urban mesocarnivores are ideal species for studying community assembly in novel communities.We analysed the spatial and temporal species interactions of an urban mesocarnivore community composed of the red fox Vulpes vulpes and the marten Martes sp. as native species, the raccoon Procyon lotor as invasive species, and the cat Felis catus as a domestic species in combination with human disturbance modulated by the SARS‐CoV‐2 lockdown effect that happened while the study was conducted.We analysed camera trap data and applied a joint species distribution model to understand not only the environmental variables influencing the detection of mesocarnivores and their use intensity of environmental features but also the species’ co‐occurrences while accounting for environmental variables. We then assessed whether they displayed temporal niche partitioning based on activity analyses, and finally analysed at a smaller temporal scale the time of delay after the detection of another focal species.We found that species were more often detected and displayed a higher use intensity in gardens during the SARS‐CoV‐2 lockdown period, while showing a shorter temporal delay during the same period, meaning a high human‐induced spatiotemporal overlap. All three wild species spatially co‐occurred within the urban area, with a positive response of raccoons to cats in detection and use intensity, whereas foxes showed a negative trend towards cats. When assessing the temporal partitioning, we found that all wild species showed overlapping nocturnal activities. All species displayed temporal segregation based on temporal delay. According to the temporal delay analyses, cats were the species avoided the most by all wild species. To conclude, we found that although the wild species were positively associated in space, the avoidance occurred at a smaller temporal scale, and human pressure in addition led to high spatiotemporal overlap.Our study sheds light to the complex patterns underlying the interactions in a mesocarnivore community both spatially and temporally, and the exacerbated effect of human pressure on community dynamics., This study contains many dimensions of ecological dynamics: human–wildlife interactions and human activities effects, ecological niche theory, species interactions and community assembly. In an urban environment, mesocarnivores displayed similar spatial requirements, their activities were concentrated during the night and the partitioning appears at a smaller temporal scale.

The inactivation of ancestral protein-coding genes (gene loss) can be associated with phenotypic modifications. Within placental mammals, repeated losses of PNLIPRP1 (gene inhibiting fat digestion) occurred preferentially in strictly herbivorous species, whereas repeated NR1I3 losses (gene involved in detoxification) occurred preferentially in strictly carnivorous species. It was hypothesized that lower fat contents of herbivorous diets and lower toxin contents of carnivorous diets cause relaxed selection pressure on these genes, resulting in the accumulation of mutations and ultimately to convergent gene losses. However, because herbivorous and carnivorous diets differ vastly in their composition, a fine-grained analysis is required for hypothesis testing. We generated a trait matrix recording diet and semi-quantitative estimates of fat and toxin consumption for 52 placental species. By including data from 31 fossil taxa, we reconstructed the ancestral diets in major lineages (grundplan reconstruction). We found support that PNLIPRP1 loss is primarily associated with low levels of fat intake and not simply with herbivory/carnivory. In particular, PNLIPRP1 loss also occurred in carnivorous lineages feeding on a fat-poor diet, suggesting that the loss of this gene may be beneficial for occupying ecological niches characterized by fat-poor food resources. Similarly, we demonstrated that carnivorous species are indeed less exposed to diet-related toxins, suggesting that the loss of NR1I3 and related genes (NR1I2 and UGT1A6) resulted from relaxed selection pressure. This study illustrates the need of detailed phenotype studies to obtain a deeper understanding of factors underlying gene losses and to progress in understanding genomic causes of phenotypic variation in mammals.

In temperate habitats, the vegetation onset in spring affects the life cycle activities of large herbivores. For one species of large herbivore, roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), parturition is tied to peak resource availability. However, recent long‐term studies of the parturition date of roe deer found only limited support for its earlier occurrence with an earlier onset of spring. In this study, data from a long‐term project (1973–2019) in southern Germany (Baden‐Württemberg; elevation 101–1036 m; 16,130 tagged roe deer fawns) were used to investigate whether the advance in the roe deer parturition date reflected different environmental conditions and was thus explained by temporal and spatial factors. Our results showed a consistent advance toward an earlier parturition date (between 0.16 and 0.33 d/yr), especially for elevations above 750 m, that coincided with an advance in plant phenology. Up to 37% of the variance of the detrended time series of the mean annual parturition was accounted for by the detrended time series of the flowering date of forsythia. Our results suggest a plasticity that allows roe deer to cope with climate‐induced changes along environmental gradients.

Some carnivores are known to survive well in urban habitats, yet the underlying behavioral tactics are poorly understood. One likely explanation for the success in urban habitats might be that carnivores are generalist consumers. However, urban populations of carnivores could as well consist of specialist feeders. Here, we compared the isotopic specialization of red foxes in urban and rural environments, using both a population and an individual level perspective. We measured stable isotope ratios in increments of red fox whiskers and potential food sources. Our results reveal that red foxes have a broad isotopic dietary niche and a large variation in resource use. Despite this large variation, we found significant differences between the variance of the urban and rural population for δ13C as well as δ15N values, suggesting a habitat‐specific foraging behavior. Although urban regions are more heterogeneous regarding land cover (based on the Shannon index) than rural regions, the dietary range of urban foxes was smaller compared with that of rural conspecifics. Moreover, the higher δ13C values and lower δ15N values of urban foxes suggest a relatively high input of anthropogenic food sources. The diet of most individuals remained largely constant over a longer period. The low intraindividual variability of urban and rural red foxes suggests a relatively constant proportion of food items consumed by individuals. Urban and rural foxes utilized a small proportion of the potentially available isotopic dietary niche as indicated by the low within‐individual variation compared to the between‐individual variation. We conclude that generalist fox populations consist of individual food specialists in urban and rural populations at least over those periods covered by our study., We compared the isotopic specialization of red foxes in urban and rural environments, using both a population and an individual level perspective. We found significant differences between the variance of the urban and rural population for δ13C as well as δ15N values, suggesting a habitat‐specific foraging behavior. Furthermore, generalist fox populations consist of individual food specialists in urban and rural populations.

Methane (CH4) production is a ubiquitous, apparently unavoidable side effect of fermentative fibre digestion by symbiotic microbiota in mammalian herbivores. Here, a data compilation is presented of in vivo CH4 measurements in individuals of 37 mammalian herbivore species fed forage-only diets, from the literature and from hitherto unpublished measurements. In contrast to previous claims, absolute CH4 emissions scaled linearly to DM intake, and CH4 yields (per DM or gross energy intake) did not vary significantly with body mass. CH4 physiology hence cannot be construed to represent an intrinsic ruminant or herbivore body size limitation. The dataset does not support traditional dichotomies of CH4 emission intensity between ruminants and nonruminants, or between foregut and hindgut fermenters. Several rodent hindgut fermenters and nonruminant foregut fermenters emit CH4 of a magnitude as high as ruminants of similar size, intake level, digesta retention or gut capacity. By contrast, equids, macropods (kangaroos) and rabbits produce few CH4 and have low CH4 : CO2 ratios for their size, intake level, digesta retention or gut capacity, ruling out these factors as explanation for interspecific variation. These findings lead to the conclusion that still unidentified host-specific factors other than digesta retention characteristics, or the presence of rumination or a foregut, influence CH4 production. Measurements of CH4 yield per digested fibre indicate that the amount of CH4 produced during fibre digestion varies not only across but also within species, possibly pointing towards variation in microbiota functionality. Recent findings on the genetic control of microbiome composition, including methanogens, raise the question about the benefits methanogens provide for many (but apparently not to the same extent for all) species, which possibly prevented the evolution of the hosting of low-methanogenic microbiota across mammals.

The way that fluids and particles move through the forestomach of a ruminant is species-specific, and can be used to classify ruminants according to their digestive physiology into 'moose-types' (with little difference in fluid and small particle passage) and 'cattle-types' (where fluids move through the forestomach much faster than small particles). So far, 'moose-types' appear limited to a dietary niche of browsing, whereas 'cattle-types' are particularly prominent in the intermediate and grazing diet niches. However, some species, including members of the spiral-horned antelopes (the Tragelaphini), have a 'cattle-type' physiology but a browse-dominated diet niche. Eland (Taurotragus oryx), the largest member of the Tragelaphini, are strict browsers in the wild but have been considered intermediate feeders in the past, and can seemingly be maintained on grass diets. We quantified food intake, mean retention time (MRT) in the gastrointestinal tract and the reticulorumen (RR) of a solute, a small and a large particle marker, and diet digestibility in six eland each fed a monocot (grass hay) and a dicot (lucerne silage) forage. Food intake and digestibility was lower on the diet with higher fibre content (grass hay), with corresponding longer MRT. At the higher intakes on lucerne, the difference in MRT between small and large particles was larger, indicating a greater reliance on particle sorting and clearance under this condition of potentially limiting gut capacity. Regardless of diet or intake, the ratio of small particle and solute MRT in the RR was constant and small, at a quotient of 1.54, classifying the eland as a typical 'moose-type' ruminant. This finding is consistent with previous literature reports on low faecal metabolic nitrogen and high apparent protein digestibility in eland. Given the relative ease at which eland can be maintained under farm husbandry conditions, they appear ideal model ruminants to study the effects of differences in rumen physiology compared to cattle.

A large number of small mammals practice cecotrophy, i.e. ingesting a certain fraction of their own faeces typically termed 'cecotrophs'. This behaviour is generally thought to limit metabolic losses of nitrogen, because a colonic separation mechanism (CSM) selectively accretes fine, nitrogen-rich particles (such as microbes) in the cecotrophs. Two types of CSM have been described, a wash-back CSM (in lagomorphs) where fluids wash through the colonic digesta in a retrograde manner into the caecum, resulting in a selectively prolonged solute marker retention in passage studies; and a mucus-trap CSM (in hystricomorph rodents) where microbes are trapped in mucus-filled anatomical structures in the colon mucosa (grooves/furrows/folds). In the mucus-trap CSM, no selective retention of any passage marker occurs. How the CSM operates in muroid rodents is not well explored, but both mucus-filled anatomical structures and a moderate degree of selective solute marker retention have been reported in the literature. Here we demonstrate selective solute marker retention in two muroid, arvicoline rodent species (field voles Microtus agrestis, body mass 28.6 ±7.4 g, and steppe lemming Lagurus lagurus, 19.8 ±2.0 g) on a pelleted high-fibre diet, where a solute marker was retained 20-55% longer than a particle marker (with mean retention times of 5.6 ±0.5 vs. 4.8 ±0.9 and 5.0 ±1.5 vs. 3.3 ±0.9 h, respectively). The animals achieved an apparent organic matter digestibility similar to that of much larger herbivores on diets of similar fibre content. In addition to a selective feeding behaviour and a high relative food intake, a digestive physiology that includes coprophagy, and a CSM using both mucus-trap and wash-back effects, are characteristic for herbivorous arvicoline rodents. The relative contributions of the two CSM components - whether they have additive or complementary effects - remain to be explored.

The digestive physiology of cattle is characterised by comparatively long digesta mean retention times (MRTs), a particle sorting mechanism (difference in MRTs of large vs. small particles) and a distinct digesta washing (difference in MRTs between particles and fluids) in the reticulorumen (RR). How these processes mature during ontogeny, and how they link to other digestion characteristics and methane production, is largely unknown. We used a set of passage markers (Co-EDTA for fluids and hay particles of 2, 5 and 8 mm length mordanted with Cr, La and Ce, respectively) to measure MRTs in 12 heifers (0.5–2.1 years; hay only) and two groups of 15 lactating cows (2.4– 10.0 years; forage-only vs. forage-concentrate diet). The MRTs differed between markers (Co < Cr < La < Ce) and were longer in heifers than cows, consistent with the lower feed intake in heifers. MRTs were mostly similar between cow groups and in- creased with age. Digesta washing was not affected by group, age, feed intake and number of chews per unit of feed. The degree of digesta washing was not related to CH4 measures. Particle sorting was more prominent in cows than heifers but did not differ between cow groups or change with age in cows. This could be the consequence of the abrupt increase in intake from heifers to cows at a time when gut capacity is not yet fully developed; particle sorting might then clear smaller particles from the RR sooner allowing a higher intake. Surprisingly, CH4 yield per ingested feed did not cor- relate with MRTs, and CH4 yield per unit of digested fibre decreased with increasing MRTs and with increasing fibre digestibility. As this pattern occurred in heifers and both cow groups, it appeared independent of age, indicating a mechanism that has not been described in the literature so far and requires further investigation.

The digestive physiology of maras (Dolichotis patagonum) has not been investigated in detail. Maras have a particular limb anatomy facilitating a unique cursoriality among rodents. This may also have led to additional adaptations such as a reduced volume of the gastrointestinal tract. We performed macroanatomical measurements of, and determined mean particle size along, the digestive tract of 10 semi-free-ranging animals (7.04 ± 1.05 kg). Additionally, we measured CH4 emission in five captive animals (7.67 ± 0.98 kg) fed a diet of pelleted lucerne, and measured food intake, digestibility, and digesta mean retention time (MRT) of a solute and three particle markers (fed at < 2, 10 and 20 mm particle size). The digestive tract contents represented 11.1 ± 1.4% of body mass, similar to other mammals and rodents, and there was slight indication of selective small particle retention in the caecum. Secondary peaks in marker elimination patterns suggested the possibility of caecotrophy. The MRTs were 15.4 h for the solute and 13.6 h, 13.3 h and 13.3 h for the three particle markers, respectively. At a dry matter intake of 61 ± 12 g kg body mass-0.75 d−1, the maras digested organic matter and neutral detergent fibre to 48 ± 8% and 34 ± 10%, respectively, which is in the lower range of results from horses fed on a diet with a similar fibre content. The respiratory quotient (CO2/O2) was 0.93 ± 0.03, the resting metabolic rate 346 ± 35 kJ kg body mass-0.75 d−1, and CH4 emissions averaged at 3.85 ± 0.47 L d−1 and 14.5 ± 5.2 L per kg dry matter intake; this at a CH4/CO2 ratio of 0.042 ± 0.004. Thus, the methane yield was of a magnitude expected for a hypothetical ruminant of this body mass. The results are consistent with the general understanding of hystricomorph rodent digestive physiology, including caecotrophy, but do not indicate a reduction of digestive capacity to support cursoriality. These results, and those obtained from other hystricomorph rodents, suggest that CH4 production may be more prominent in rodents than previously thought.

Ruminants have been classified as having a ‘moose-type’ or ‘cattle-type’ digestive physiology. ‘Cattle-type’ ruminants have a clear difference in the mean retention time (MRT) of fluid vs. small particles in the reticulorumen (RR), with a high ‘selectivity factor’ (SF=MRTparticle/ MRTfluid,>1.80), and are typically grazers and intermediate feeders. ‘Moose-type’ ruminants have lower SF (< 1.80), possibly because of defensive salivary proteins that constrain amounts of (high-viscosity) saliva, and are typically restricted to browsing. To further contribute to testing this physiology-diet correlation, we performed 55 individual passage measurements in 4/6 species that have/have not been investigated previously, respectively. Co-EDTA was used as a solute (fluid) and Cr-mordanted hay particles (< 2 mm) as particle markers. Results are related to the percentage of grass in the natural diet taken from the literature. Moose (Alces alces, n=4 on 4 to 5 diets each and n=2 on a single diet, 5% grass, SF 1.46 ± 0.22) and giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis, n=3 on 3 to 5 diets each, 1%, 1.42 ± 0.23) as classical ‘moose-type’, and cattle (Bos taurus, n=2, 70%, 2.04) as classical ‘cattle-type’ ruminants yielded results similar to those previously published, as did waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus, n=5, 84%, 2.46 ± 0.49), corroborating that the SF represents, to a large extent, a species-specific characteristic. Results in oryx (Oryx leucoryx, n=1, 75%, 2.60) and sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii, n=4, 68%, 1.81 ± 0.21) correspond to the concept of ‘cattletype’ ruminants being grazers or intermediate feeders. However, European bison (Bison bonasus, n=1, 10%, 2.74), nyala (T. angasii, n=6, 20%, 1.95 ± 0.25), bongo (T. eurycerus, n=3, 13%, 2.39 ± 0.54) and gerenuk (Litocranius walleri, n=1, 0%, 2.25) appear as ‘cattle-type’ ruminants, yet have a browse-dominated diet. While the results do not challenge the view that a ‘moose-type’ digestive physiology is an adaptation to browse diets, they indicate that it may not be the only adaptation that enables ruminants to use browse. Apparently, a ‘cattletype’ digestive physiology with a high SF does not necessarily preclude a browsing diet niche. High-SF browsers might have the benefit of an increased harvest of RR microbiota and grit removal prior to rumination; how they defend themselves against secondary plant compounds in browse remains to be investigated.

Ruminants are classified into three groups, according to their feeding behaviour: browsers, intermediate feeders and grazers. Corresponding to their dietary preferences, multiple morphological and physiological adaptations have been described, resulting in another classification: ‘moose-type’ and ‘cattle-type’ ruminants. Digesta retention patterns in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and reticulorumen (RR) are considered major criteria to distinguish these types, as cattle-type ruminants show shorter retention of fluids (measured by a solute marker) than of particles, while in moose-type ruminants, both are retained for more similar periods. To what extent these digestive types are specific to phylogenetic lineages is still unclear. We measured mean retention times (MRTs) of solutes and particles (2 and 20 mm) in the strictest grazing cervid: the Pere David’s deer (Elaphurus davidianus; n = 5; body mass = 155.0 ± 14.5 kg). The MRTs of solutes, small and large particles in the GIT were 34 ± 4, 60 ± 7 and 69 ± 9 h, respectively. The ratio of the MRT of small particles versus solutes in the RR was 2.0 ± 0.1, similar to other cattle-type ruminants. The results confirm the hypothesis that Pere David’s deer can be classified as cattle-type ruminants, corresponding to both dietary preferences and previously described morphological traits. The results complement previous findings, showing that both cattle-type and moose-type physiologies are found among bovids as well as cervids, indicating that these digestion types can be considered convergent adaptations.

The digestive tract of animals, and the patterns how passage markers are excreted from them, have been fruitfully compared to chemical reactor models from engineering science. An important characteristic of idealized reactor models is the smoothness of the curves plotting marker concentrations in outflow (i.e., faeces) over time, which is the result of the assumed complete mixing of the marker with the reactor contents. Published excretion patterns from passage experiments in non-primate mammals appear to indicate a high degree of digesta mixing. In order to assess whether marker excretion graphs from primates differ from ideal outflow graphs, we performed passage experiments in eight individuals of three foregut-fermenting species (Pygathrix nemaeus, Trachypithecus auratus and Semnopithecus vetulus), and added them to available marker excretion curves from the literature. In the resulting collection, 23 out of a total of 25 patterns in foregut fermenters (21 individuals of 10 species from 7 studies), and 13 out of 15 in hindgut fermenters (9 individuals of 2 species from 2 studies), showed an irregular, ‘spiky’ pattern. We consider this proportion to be too high to be explained by experimental errors, and suggest that this may indicate a taxon-wide characteristic of particularly incomplete digesta mixing, acknowledging that further data from less related primate species are required for corroboration. Our hypothesis is in accordance with previous findings of a comparatively low degree of ‘digesta washing’ (differential retention of particulate and fluid digesta) in primates. Together with literature findings that suggest a low chewing efficiency in primates compared to other mammals, these observations indicate that in contrast to other herbivores, the success of the primate order is not derived from particularly elaborate adaptations of their ingestive and digestive physiology.

The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), the largest living rodent, probably has a "mucus-trap" colonic separation mechanism. To test this hypothesis, we measured the mean retention time of a solute marker (MRTSolute ), 2 mm (MRT2 mm ), 10 mm (MRT10 mm ), and 20 mm (MRT20 mm ) particle markers and nutrient digestibility in adult captive capybaras (27-52 kg body mass (BM), 2-11 yr). In addition, total gut fill and the selectivity factor (MRTSolute /MRT2 mm ) were calculated, and mean faecal particle size and metabolic fecal nitrogen of captive capybaras were compared to those of free-ranging specimens. Finally, we also measured methane production in one animal. The MRT2 mm (29.2 ± 8.2 hr) was different (p < 0.01) from MRTSolute (37.0 ± 13.1 hr), MRT10 mm (36.5 ± 8.2 hr), and MRT20 mm (35.1 ± 9.6 hr). The selectivity factor (1.26 ± 0.30) was in the range considered typical for a "mucus-trap" colonic separation mechanism. The estimated total gut fill was 1.50 ± 0.37% and 1.73 ± 0.25% of BM calculated from the results of the 2-mm and 10-mm particle markers, respectively. The CH4 emission was 13.7 L/day. Captive capybaras had greater mean fecal particle size (0.44 ± 0.06 vs. 0.29 ± 0.05 mm, p < 0.001) and metabolic fecal nitrogen (65.5 ± 3.91 vs. 46.8 ± 10.5% of fecal nitrogen, p < 0.001) than free-ranging capybaras. Organic matter digestibility decreased less steeply with increasing dietary crude fiber content in capybaras as compared to published data from rabbits or guinea pigs. Accordingly, the digestive physiology of the capybara is characterized by a comparatively high fiber digestibility, with a "mucus-trap" colonic separation mechanism, allowing capybaras to thrive on forage-only diets.

Although it is known that most herbivores produce methane (CH4), CH4 emissions in rodents are generally considered negligible and have rarely been measured in live animals. We measured CH4 emission in four captive juvenile nutria (Myocastor coypus) fed a diet of pelleted lucerne, as well as food intake, digestibility, and digesta mean retention time (MRT) of a solute and a particle marker. Marker excretion patterns revealed secondary peaks indicative of coprophagy, with MRTs of 30.2 ± 4.2 h and 24.2 ± 4.2 h for solutes and particles, respectively, and a resulting MRTsolute/MRTparticle ratio of 1.26 ± 0.07, which is still typical for a ‘mucus-trap’ colonic separation mechanism. At a dry matter intake of 28 ± 6 g kg body mass−0.75 d−1, the nutria digested organic matter and neutral detergent fibre at 59 ± 3% and 46 ± 3%, respectively, similar to what might be expected from horses on a diet with this fibre content. The respiratory quotient (CO2/O2) was 0.95 ± 0.02, the resting metabolic rate 266 ± 31 kJ kg body mass−0.75 day−1 and CH4 emissions averaged at 1.72 ± 0.17 L day−1 and 39.8 ± 11.3 L per kg dry matter intake; this at a CH4/CO2 ratio of 0.08 ± 0.04. Accordingly, methane yield was of a magnitude expected for a hypothetical ruminant of this body mass. While rodents’ CH4 contributions to global budgets might be low due to their low body size, this should not give rise to the assumption that CH4 production is not a relevant part of their digestive physiology.

Eastern gorillas ( Gorilla beringei ) are among the few mammal species that seasonally consume large quantities of young bamboo shoots, which are a rich source of energy. Here, we document how the consumption of bamboo shoots coincides with changes in behavior of adult mountain gorillas ( Gorilla beringei beringei ) monitored by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Center in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. We offer a preliminary analysis of possible mechanisms underlying this behavioral change by measuring energy intake rates and the presence of cyanide and alcohol—ingredients potentially associated with increased activity levels—in fresh bamboo shoots. The percentage of bamboo shoots in the diet of gorillas was correlated positively with the rate of play behavior shown by adults in 2 of the 3 study groups. Play behavior was not the result of better weather conditions and also did not reflect the availability of spare time. Rather, there is some, but not consistent, evidence for a link between energy intake rates and play behavior of adults. Cyanide was not detected in young bamboo shoots, and the presence of alcohol remains inconclusive, albeit unlikely. In sum, our results show that consumption of a high-quality food can have a direct influence on the activity budget (and by extrapolation energy expenditure) of mountain gorillas through increased rates of play behavior. However, the physiological aspects underlying this elevated activity warrant further investigation.

Enteric methane (CH4) production is a side-effect of herbivore digestion, but it is unknown whether CH4 itself influences digestive physiology. We investigated the effect of adding CH4 to, or reducing it in, the reticulorumen (RR) in a 4×4 Latin square experiment with rumen-fistulated, non-lactating cows, with four treatments: (i) control, (ii) insufflation of CH4 (iCH4), (iii) N via rumen fistula, (iv) reduction of CH4 via administration of bromochloromethane (BCM). DM intake (DMI), apparent total tract digestibility, digesta mean retention times (MRT), rumen motility and chewing activity, spot breath CH4 emission (CH4exhal, litre/kg DMI) as well as CH4 dissolved in rumen fluid (CH4RRf, µg/ml) were measured. Data were analysed using mixed models, including treatment (or, alternatively, CH4exhal or CH4RRf) and DMI relative to body mass0·85 (rDMI) as covariates. rDMI was the lowest on the BCM treatment. CH4exhal was highest for iCH4 and lowest for BCM treatments, whereas only BCM affected (reduced) CH4RRf. After adjusting for rDMI, CH4RRf had a negative association with MRT in the gastrointestinal tract but not in the RR, and negative associations with fibre digestibility and measures of rumination activity. Adjusting for rDMI, CH4exhal had additionally a negative association with particle MRT in the RR and a positive association with rumen motility. Thus, higher rumen levels of CH4 (CH4exhal or CH4RRf) were associated with shorter MRT and increased motility. These findings are tentatively interpreted as a feedback mechanism in the ruminant digestive tract that aims at mitigating CH4 losses by shortening MRT at higher CH4.

Socioecological models predict that contest competition will arise when high quality foods can be usurped or monopolized, leading to more favorable energy balances and higher reproductive success for high-ranking females. Gorillas are interesting species for studying such predictions due to the variety of ecological conditions that they experience in different locations. Using data from 23 female mountain gorillas in 3 social groups in the Virunga Massif, we examined food characteristics that may influence contest competition (food site residence times [FSRT]), proximate mechanisms of such competition (aggression and avoidance), and potential consequences of competition (rank-related differences in energy intake rates, travel expenditures, and activity budgets). The average FSRT of each female was significantly correlated with dominance rank, which suggests that high-ranking females may have greater access to foods that are easier to usurp (as predicted with contest competition). High-ranking females were significantly more aggressive than low-ranking females, and both aggression and avoidance were significantly higher while feeding than during other activities. Contrary to predictions for contest competition, however, rank was not significantly correlated with energy intake rates nor with the proportion of time spent traveling versus feeding. Thus, we did not find any energetic benefits to explain why high-ranking females had significantly higher reproductive success in earlier studies. We propose several alternative explanations and discuss the potential complications of assessing contest competition in species with weak dominance relationships.

Monitoring metabolic activity in wild living animals has become of particular interest in the field of ecological research. Methods for the repeated non-invasive sampling of individuals are needed. Thyroid hormones (TH) are involved in the regulation of metabolic activity, and their measurement can be used as a proxy to monitor metabolic changes. During periods of low energy intake, serum TH levels are reduced, leading to a decrease in metabolic activity. Using urine samples collected during a food restriction experiment in captive bonobos we validated a total triiodthyronin (TT3) enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the monitoring of metabolic changes. We found that the majority of immune reactivity of the assay in the urine samples could be explained through immunoreactivity to T3. Furthermore, urinary T3 was stable through repeated freeze-thaw cycles but prolonged exposure to room temperature lead to degradation. Most importantly, we found that for all animals urinary total T3 levels were higher when more digestible energy was consumed. We concluded that urinary total T3 measurements are a suitable method for monitoring metabolic changes in bonobos and potentially in a wide range of animal species.

Polyphenols are known to affect digestion of ruminants, whereas there is little information about their metabolic effects. In a 2 × 2-factorial experiment, the effects of supplementing a phenolic grapeseed extract were compared in 11 East Friesian dairy sheep and 9 Saanen goats. The concentrate, supplemented with 7.4 g/100 g DM grapeseed extract, had contents of 3.5 g additional phenols/100 g DM and was compared with a low phenolic control concentrate. Performance, total phenols in blood, milk, urine and feces, antioxidant capacity of the blood, and saliva properties were examined. The experiment lasted for 11 wk from parturition to late lactation, with an initial adaptation phase of 1 wk. Milk yield was measured daily after weaning at about 7 wk after parturition. Blood, milk, saliva, feces, and urine were sampled 4, 3, 2, 2, and 2 times per animal, respectively. The phenolic diet increased phenol concentrations in blood (+10% and 17% in weeks 5 and 11, respectively) and in milk (+32% in week 5) in some of the sampling weeks. There were no clear species differences in phenol concentrations in blood plasma, milk, urine, and feces. However, at the end of the experiment, the supplemented goats had higher (P < 0.05) urinary phenol concentrations than the nonsupplemented goats. A weak relationship (P < 0.05) was found between phenol intake and phenol excretion with milk for sheep but not goats. The phenolic diet did not influence blood antioxidant capacity and tannin-binding capacity of the saliva. The saliva of the goats had a higher tannin-binding capacity than sheep saliva. The effects of the extract on milk yield were inconsistent between sheep and goats. In general, goats had higher feed and nutrient intakes, were heavier, and yielded more milk. Additionally, milk protein and lactose contents were lower and milk urea content was higher in goats than sheep. In conclusion, supplementing grapeseed extract to sheep and goats elevated phenol concentrations in milk and blood to a certain extent, but most of the phenols were lost via urine. The study gave another indication that goats seem to have developed coping mechanisms like a higher salivary tannin-binding capacity, mechanisms which are less pronounced in sheep.

There is a discrepancy in the literature on potential digesta separation mechanisms in horses, with both a selective retention of fine and of large particles postulated in different publications. To assess the net effect of such mechanisms, we fed ponies on a hay-only diet a pulse dose of whole (unchopped) marked hay together with a solute marker, collected faeces on a regular basis, measured marker concentrations in whole faeces and in their large (2.0-16 mm), medium (0.5-1.0 mm) and small (0.063-0.25 mm) particle fraction, and calculated the corresponding mean retention times (MRTs). For comparison, the same experiment was performed in goats. In goats, as expected, MRTsolute (35 hr) was significantly shorter than MRTparticle (51 hr); only a very small fraction of particle marker was excreted as large particles (2%); and the MRT of these large particles was significantly shorter than that of small particles (with a relevant difference of 8.6 hr), indicating that those few large particles that escape the rumen do so mostly soon after ingestion. In ponies, MRTsolute (24 hr) did not differ from MRTparticle (24 hr); a higher fraction of particle marker was excreted as large particles (5%); and the MRT of these large particles was longer than that of small particles (but with a non-relevant difference of less than 1 hr). These results indicate that no relevant net separation of digesta phases occurs in horses and that selective particle retention mechanisms in the large intestine are unlikely to represent important characteristics of the horse's digestive physiology.

The assumption that population density restricts the foraging efficiency of individuals in the population via increased competition for resources underpins socioecological models of female social relationships in primates. We examined this assumption by comparing quantitative measures of foraging efficiency in two communities of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) that inhabit the same contiguous forest in Kibale National Park, Uganda, but differ substantially in size and density. To calculate net caloric gain rates (our measure of foraging efficiency) we obtained data directly from focal follows of individual chimpanzees on 1) residency time in a feeding patch, 2) feeding rate in the patch, 3) the nutrient content of the items fed upon, and 4) the distance walked between feeding patches. We collected foraging efficiency data over 1059 h at Ngogo and 961 h at Kanyawara. We found that individuals in the high-density community (Ngogo) had higher mean foraging efficiency values than those in the low-density community (Kanyawara), and that foraging efficiency varied less over time at Ngogo when assessed over the time scales of individual feeding/traveling bouts and of daily net caloric gain rates. Fluctuation in net caloric gain rates on a monthly time scale was greater at Ngogo than at Kanyawara, but this was likely due to the nutritional effects of a mast fruiting event by one of the most important species at the site. These findings suggest that high population density at Ngogo has not precluded high foraging efficiency. The classic view of increased population density inevitably increasing feeding competition and reducing foraging efficiency likely underemphasizes the ability of primates, especially those in rich habitats, to maximize caloric intake.

Objective Here, we compare food availability and relate this to differences in energy intake rates, time spent feeding, and daily travel distance of gorillas in the two populations. Comparative intraspecific studies investigating spatiotemporal variation in food availability can help us understand the complex relationships between ecology, behavior, and life history in primates and are relevant to understanding hominin evolution. Differences in several variables have been documented between the two mountain gorilla populations in the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, but few direct comparisons that link ecological conditions to feeding behavior have been made. Materials and Methods Using similar data collection protocols we conducted vegetation sampling and nutritional analysis on important foods to estimate food availability. Detailed observations of feeding behavior were used to compute energy intake rates and daily travel distance was estimated through GPS readings. Results Food availability was overall lower and had greater temporal variability in Bwindi than in the Virungas. Energy intake rates and time spent feeding were similar in both populations, but energy intake rates were significantly higher in Bwindi during the period of high fruit consumption. Daily travel distances were significantly shorter in the Virungas. Conclusions Overall, despite the differences in food availability, we did not find large differences in the energetics of gorillas in the two populations, although further work is needed to more precisely quantify energy expenditure and energy balance. These results emphasize that even species with high food availability can exhibit behavioral and energetic responses to variable ecological conditions, which are likely to affect growth, reproduction, and survival. Patch use can illustrate the contributions that forage quality and foraging risk make in shaping foraging decisions made under the risk of being killed. We aimed to determine whether forage selection by European bison Bison bonasus was state-dependent in being shaped by risk (wolf predation or human poaching/culling avoidance) or nutrient quality at two time periods—early winter (when resources are abundant) and at the end of winter (when resources are scarce)—in Bialowieza Primeval Forest (Poland). We used a giving-up density framework using the proportional consumption of hay provided by humans to measure the perceptions of risk in European bison. European bison resource selection was primarily driven by minimising the distance they travel over open ground in early winter (i.e. avoiding humans), however by the end of winter, when resources are scarce, bison selected haystacks for their nutrient quality (low fibre, high Mg and energy). This study illustrates how resource selection varies according to the condition of animals (i.e. state-dependency affects the marginal value theorem). It also indicates conservation managers using hay quality may actively manage human–bison conflicts in trouble spots and that bison are currently free from top-down limitation in Bialowieza as they do not perceive wolves as threatening enough to alter their foraging behaviour.

The mean retention times (MRT) of solute or particles in the gastrointestinal tract and the forestomach (FS) are crucial determinants of digestive physiology in herbivores. Besides ruminants, camelids are the only herbivores that have evolved rumination as an obligatory physiological process consisting of repeated mastication of large food particles, which requires a particle sorting mechanism in the FS. Differences between camelids and ruminants have hardly been investigated so far. In this study we measured MRTs of solute and differently sized particles (2, 10, and 20 mm) and the ratio of large-to-small particle MRT, i.e. the selectivity factors (SF(10/2mm), SF(20/2mm), SF(20/10mm)), in three camelid species: alpacas (Vicugna pacos), llamas (Llama glama), and Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus). The camelid data were compared with literature data from ruminants and non-ruminant foregut fermenters (NRFF). Camelids and ruminants both had higher SF(10/2mm)FS than NRFF, suggesting convergence in the function of the FS sorting mechanism in contrast to NRFF, in which such a sorting mechanism is absent. The SF(20/10mm)FS did not differ between ruminants and camelids, indicating that there is a particle size threshold of about 1 cm in both suborders above which particle retention is not increased. Camelids did not differ from ruminants in MRT(2mm)FS, MRTsoluteFS, and the ratio MRT(2mm)FS/MRTsoluteFS, but they were more similar to 'cattle-' than to 'moose-type' ruminants. Camelids had higher SF(10/2mm)FS and higher SF(20/2mm)FS than ruminants, indicating a potentially slower particle sorting in camelids than in ruminants, with larger particles being retained longer in relation to small particles.
