In 2019 the EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Training Network P-TRAP has been launched and is now approaching its end. The project has been targeting the diffuse flux of phosphate (P) into surface waters, i.e. the problems of understanding and controlling environmental P fluxes. P-TRAP has been aiming to develop new methods and approaches to trap P in drained agricultural areas and in the sediments of eutrophic lakes. The P-TRAP technologies have in common that they rely on the naturally strong connection between the biogeochemical cycling of P and iron (Fe). Trapping of P involved the application of Fe-containing by-products from drinking water treatment. P-TRAP aspired the ideas of a circular economy and aimed at recovering the retained P in agricultural systems and to convert it into valuable products for agricultural applications. In order to direct and support the development of the technologies, process-orientated investigations on the behaviour of P during the transformation of Fe minerals have been conducted. The poster will highlight some results from the project and will present conclusions, which can be drawn based on the current achievements.

Understanding earth materials is essential for the creation of a sustainable, carbon-neutral society. Earth materials control the feasibility of subsurface energy storage, geothermal energy extraction, and are a source of critical elements for future-proof battery technologies. To tackle the current, pressing scientific questions related to sustainable development for a circular economy, there is an urgent need to make multi-scale, multi-dimensional characterisations of earth materials available to a broad spectrum of earth-science disciplines. Besides society-relevant topics, the properties of earth materials determine how the Earth works on the most fundamental level.To overcome this challenge, 15 European institutes joined forces to establish EXCITE, providing free-of-charge access to 24 state-of-the art microscopy and x-ray tomography facilities in Europe. EXCITE can help you gain insight into the processes governing the behavior of the Earth crust through microchemical analyses and 2D- to 4D imaging, and down to nanometer resolution. In particular, the EXCITE strategy integrates joint research programs with networking, training, and trans-national access activities, thereby enabling both academia and industry to answer critical questions in earth-materials science and technology. Ambitious methane (CH4) emissions mitigation represents one of the most effective opportunities to slow the rate of global warming over the next decades. The oil and gas (O&G) sector is a significant source of methane emissions, with technically feasible and cost-effective emission mitigation options. Romania, a key O&G producer within the EU, with one of the highest reported annual CH4 emissions from the energy sector (Greenhouse Gas Inventory Data - Comparison by Category, 2022), can play an important role towards the EU’s emission reduction targets. In this study, we quantify CH4 emissions from onshore oil production sites in Romania at source and facility level using a combination of ground-based measurement techniques. Measured emissions were characterised by heavily skewed distributions, with 10 % of the sites accounting for more than 70 % of total emissions. Integrating the results from all site-level quantifications with different approaches, we derive a central estimate of 5.4 kg h–1 site-1 of CH4 (3.6–8.4, 95 % confidence interval) for oil production sites. This estimate represents one of the highest when compared to measurement-based estimates of similar facilities from other production regions. Based on our results, we estimate a total of 120 ktons CH4 yr–1 (range: 79–180 ktons yr–1) from oil wells in our studied areas in Romania. This is approximately 2.5 times higher than the total reported emissions from the Romanian oil production sector for 2020. Based on the source level characterization, up to three quarters of the detected emissions from oil production sites are related to operational venting. Our results suggest that O&G production infrastructure in Romania holds a massive mitigation potential, specifically by implementing measures to capture the gas and minimize operational venting and leaks.

New effective, economical and safe antimalarial drugs are urgently needed due to the development of multi-drug-resistant strains of the parasite. Homeopathy uses ultra-diluted doses of various substances to stimulate autoregulatory and self-healing processes to cure various ailments. The aim of the study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo antimalarial efficacy of a homeopathic drug, Chininum sulphuricum 30C.In vitro antiplasmodial activity was screened against the P. falciparum chloroquine-sensitive (3D7) strain, and cell viability was assessed against normal human dermal fibroblasts and HepG2 cells. Suppressive, preventive and curative studies were carried out against P. berghei-infected mice in vivo.Chininum sulphuricum (30C) revealed good antiplasmodial activity in vitro, with 92.79 ± 6.93% inhibition against the 3D7 strain. The cell viability was 83.6 ± 0.6% against normal human dermal fibroblasts and 95.22 ± 5.1% against HepG2 cells. It also exhibited suppressive efficacy with 95.56% chemosuppression on day 7 with no mortality throughout the follow-up period of 28 days. It also showed preventive activity against the disease. Drug treatment was also safe to the liver and kidney function of the host as evidenced by biochemical studies.Chininum sulphuricum 30C exhibited considerable antimalarial activity along with safety to the liver and kidney function of the host.Hintergrund: Es besteht dringender Bedarf an neuen wirkungsvollen, ökonomischen und sicheren Malariamedikamenten angesichts der Entwicklung multiresistenter Stämme des Parasiten. Das Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Wirksamkeit des homöopathischen Präparats Chininum sulfuricum 30C gegen Malaria in vitro und in vivo zu beurteilen. Methoden: Die antiplasmodiale Aktivität in vitro wurde an P. falciparum, chloroquinsensitiver Stamm (3D7) getestet, und die Zellvitalität wurde bei normalen humanen Dermis-Fibroblasten sowie HepG2-Zellen untersucht. In vivo wurden suppressive, präventive und kurative Studien bei P.-berghei-infizierten Mäusen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse: Chininum sulfuricum (30C) zeigte in vitro gute antiplasmodiale Aktivitätmit 92,79 ± 6,93% Inhibition des 3D7-Stamms. Die Zellvitalität lag bei 83,6 ± 0,6% bei normalen humanen dermalen Fibroblasten bzw. 95,22 ± 5,1% bei HepG2-Zellen.Außerdem zeigte das Präparat suppressive Wirksamkeit mit 95,56% Chemosuppression an Tag 7 ohne Mortalität im gesamten Nachbeobachtungszeitraum von 28 Tagen. Auch zeigte es präventive Wirksamkeit gegen die Krankheit. Die Behandlung war dabei sicher in Bezug auf die Leber- und Nierenfunktion des Wirts, wie biochemische Studien belegen. Schlussfolgerung: Chininum sulfuricum 30C zeigte erhebliche Aktivität gegen die Malariainfektion und war dabei sicher in Bezug auf die Leber- und Nierenfunktion des Wirts.

Vector control is an imperative method for the control of vector borne diseases. Over the last few decades, many methods have been developed for their control and the main goal of these strategies is to reduce the number of mosquito populations to overcome the epidemic situations. Though despite continuous efforts of the present interventions being deployed in the vector control programs we are unable to control the disease transmission and outbreaks. Therefore, it highlights the importance of exploring the challenges which are hindering the success of these strategies and also alternative solutions for the same so as to boost the vector control interventions.

EXCITE is a Horizon Europe infrastructure project, and enables access to high-end microscopy facilities and to join the knowledge and experience from the different institutions. By doing so, EXCITE will develop community-driven technological imaging advancements that will strengthen and extend the current implementation of leading-edge microscopy for earth-materials research. In particular, the EXCITE strategy is to integrate joint research programmes with networking, training, and trans-national access activities, to enable both academia and industry to answer critical questions in earth-materials science and technology. As such, EXCITE builds a community of highly qualified earth scientists, develops correlative imaging technologies providing access to world-class facilities to particularly new and non-expert users that are often hindered from engaging in problem-solving microscopy of earth-materials.This presentation gives an overview EXCITE, its activities and open calls, and the progress of the first year of the project.

Present study explores the in vivo antiplasmodial activity of ethanol leaf extract of Thalictrum foliolosum (ELETF) against lethal murine malaria.The acute toxicity of the extract was assessed by Limit test of Lorke. The suppressive activity of the extract was evaluated by Peter's 4 day test. In vivo preventive and curative activity of ELETF was assessed by Peter's method and Ryley and Peter's method respectively. Biochemical assays were carried out using standard methods.ELETF (1000 mg/kg) exhibited considerable in vivo schizontocidal activity with 67.11% chemosuppression on Day 5. MEMO2 was a 4-years European Training Network with more than 20 collaborators from 7 countries. The project contributed significantly to the targets of the EU with a focus on methane (CH4). CH4 emissions are a major contributor to Europe’s global warming impact, and the official inventories of emissions and estimates derived from direct atmospheric measurement show significant discrepancies. However, effective emission reduction can only be achieved if sources are properly quantified, and mitigation efforts are verified. MEMO2 contributed to advanced combinations of measurement and modelling which are needed to achieve such quantification.With respect to the recently released EU methane strategy and the implementation of independent verification of emissions by atmospheric measurements, we will present some examples of relevant results from MEMO2 up to now:Urban CH4 emissions: We can now detect and quantify CH4 leaks in cities at the street-level with mobile nigh precision analysers. Similar studies have been carried out in >10 EU cities and in collaboration with interested network operators those measurements are ready to be rolled out at larger scale.Oil and gas production: We carried out a large study in the oil and gas production region in Romania (ROMEO), with aircraft, drones and vehicles. The final results are close to publication and help to improve the emission verification.Coal mining: In collaboration with CoMet, another science project, we quantified the CH4 emissions from the Upper Silesian coal mining area. The collaboration and its results contribute to the development of an independent and objective emission monitoring systemModelling: Micro-scale plume modelling is significantly improved. Those models e.g. help to simulate a measurement day as we had during our field campaign in Romania and improve sampling and measurement strategies.

Enhanced loading of surface waters with P is the main cause for eutrophication and presents a key challenge in meeting the objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive. Understanding and controlling environmental P fluxes therefore is key to target both problems, to develop new methods and approaches to manage environmental P fluxes, and to improve surface water quality.In March 2019 the EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network P-TRAP has been launched. Reaching the targets of the Paris Agreement requires massive reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. CH4emissions are a major contributor to Europe’s global warming impact and emissions are not well quantified yet. There are significant discrepancies between official inventories of emissions and estimates derived from direct atmospheric measurement. Effective emission reduction can only be achieved if sources are properly quantified, and mitigation efforts are verified. New advanced combinations of measurement and modelling are needed to archive such quantification.MEMO2is a European Training Network with more than 20 collaborators from 7 countries. It is a 4-years project and will contribute to the targets of the EU with a focus on methane (CH4). The project will bridge the gap between large-scale scientific estimates from in situmonitoring programs and the ‘bottom-up’ estimates of emissions from local sources that are used in the national reporting by I) developing new and advanced mobile methane (CH4) measurements tools and networks, II) isotopic source identification, and III) modelling at different scales. Within the project qualified scientists will be educated in the use and implementation of interdisciplinary knowledge and techniques that are essential to meet and verify emission reduction goals. MEMO2facilitates intensive collaboration between the largely academic greenhouse gas monitoring community and non-academic partners who are responsible for evaluating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions to policy makers.We will present the project, its objectives and the results so far to foster collaboration and scientific exchange.

Plant-derived antimalarials are indispensable for malaria treatment and a platform for new drugs. The present study explores sinigrin, for malaria using in vitro, in silico and in vivo strategies and the immune response generated after administration. The compound exhibited promising activity against chloroquine (CQ)-resistant (RKL-9) IC50 5.14 μg/mL and CQ-sensitive (3D7) IC50 5.47 μg/mL strains of P. falciparum and was safe in both in vitro (CC50 > 640 μg/mL) and in vivo (LD50 > 2 g/kg) toxicity studies. In addition, virtual screening showed hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions with amino acid residues of 3BPM (falcipain-3). Ethnopharmacological relevance The increasing resistant cases even against artemisinin-based combination therapy have necessitated the need to develop new antimalarials. Phytomedicinal therapy is a benchmark for malaria in the Himalayan region. As the dialect and traditional variations have been seen along with this, usage of medicinal plant, its portion (shoot and root system) and mode of preparation also varies. There is no scientific evidence available for illustrating the antiplasmodial activity of the rhizomes of Bergenia ciliata (Saxifragaceae), which is known to be an antipyretic (fever akin to malaria), hepato-protective, and also for spleen enlargement. Aim of the study The present study evaluates the antimalarial activity of ethanol extract of B. ciliata rhizomes (EREBC). Materials and methods HPTLC was performed to identify and quantify three marker compounds in EREBC. The in vitro antimalarial activity was evaluated by schizont maturation inhibition assay. MTT assay was employed to test the cytotoxicity of EREBC. Peter's 4-day test and Peters method was employed to discern the suppressive and preventive activity of the extract respectively. Results HPTLC analysis revealed the presence of bergenin, epicatechin and gallic acid in the extract. EREBC exhibited considerable inhibition (IC50 1000 μg/mL). The selectivity index was > 200 for both strains. Acute toxicity of EREBC was > 4 g/kg. EREBC exhibited considerable in vivo suppressive activity with 96.48% inhibition at 500 mg/kg in comparison to chloroquine (96.08%). The ED50 of the extract was Conclusion Overall, the study illustrates the marked efficacy and potential of EREBC as an antimalarial agent with bergenin, epicatechin and gallic acid its major constituents, which played a pivotal role in the generation of the immune response.

Together with scientific creativity, good research project management is one of the keys for a successful project. This special issue compiles a collection of articles on several topics related to project management in Earth sciences. It is an initiating step towards building a body of literature in (geo)science project management in response to the need of research project managers to share their daily work, experiences and knowledge. It is composed of six original papers that present technical tools, interpersonal skills and focused areas of practice (ocean and polar sciences).

The difficulty of developing an efficient malaria vaccine along with increasing spread of multidrug resistant strain of Plasmodium falciparum to the available antimalarial drugs poses the need to discover safe and efficacious antimalarial drugs to control malaria. An alternative strategy is to synthesize compounds possessing structures similar to the active natural products or marketed drugs. Several biologically active natural products and drugs contain β-carboline moiety. In the present study, few selected β-carboline derivatives have been synthesized and tested for their in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity against the rodent malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei (NK-65). The designed analogs exhibited considerable in vitro antimalarial activity. Two compounds (1R,3S)-methyl 1-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole-3-carboxylate (9a) and (1R,3S)-methyl 1-(pyridin-3-yl)-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole-3-carboxylate (9b) were further selected for in vivo studies. Both the lead compounds (9a and 9b) were observed to be safe for oral administration. The therapeutic effective dose (ED50) for 9a and 9b were determined and in the animal model, 9a (at 50 mg/kg dose) exhibited better activity in terms of parasite clearance and enhancement of host survival. Biochemical investigations also point toward the safety of the compound to the hepatic and renal functions of the rodent host. Further studies are underway to explore its activity alone as well as in combination therapy with artesunate against the human malaria parasite P. falciparum.

Formaldehyde of known, near-natural isotopic composition was photolyzed in the SAPHIR atmosphere simulation chamber under ambient conditions. The isotopic composition of the product H2 was used to determine the isotope effects in formaldehyde photolysis. The experiments are sensitive to the molecular photolysis channel, and the radical channel has only an indirect effect and cannot be effectively constrained. The molecular channel kinetic isotope effect KIEmol, the ratio of photolysis frequencies j(HCHO→CO+H2)/j(HCDO→CO+HD) at surface pressure, is determined to be KIEmol=1.63−0.046+0.038. This is similar to the kinetic isotope effect for the total removal of HCHO from a recent relative rate experiment (KIEtot=1.58±0.03), which indicates that the KIEs in the molecular and radical photolysis channels at surface pressure (≈100 kPa) may not be as different as described previously in the literature.

In order to investigate the role of the North Atlantic Ocean as a source of atmospheric nitrous oxide and to decipher the major formation pathways of nitrous oxide, measurements of dissolved nitrous oxide were made during three cruises in the tropical, subtropical and subpolar North Atlantic in October/November 2002, March/April 2004, and May 2002, respectively. Nitrous oxide was close to equilibrium or slightly supersaturated in the surface layers suggesting that the North Atlantic acts as a weak source of nitrous oxide to the atmosphere. Depth profiles showed supersaturation throughout the water column with a distinct increasing trend from the subpolar to the tropical region. Lowest nitrous oxide concentrations, near equilibrium and with an average of 11.0±1.7 nmol L−1, were found in the subpolar North Atlantic where the profiles showed no clear maxima. Highest values up to 37.3 nmol L−1 occurred in the tropical North Atlantic with clear maxima at approximately 400 m. A positive correlation of nitrous oxide with nitrate, as well as excess nitrous oxide with AOU, was only observed in the subtropical and tropical regions. Therefore, we conclude that the formation of nitrous oxide occurs in the tropical region rather than in the subpolar region of the North Atlantic and suggest nitrification is the dominant formation pathway in the subtropical and tropical regions.

Background: Investigation of traditionally used medicinal plants can provide safe and cost effective good antimalarials. The present study explores the in vitro antimalarial potential of Thalictrum foliolosum (meadow rue) leaf extract against Plasmodium falciparum. Methods: Phytochemical screening of the extract was carried out following standardized methods. WHO method based on schizont maturation inhibition was employed to assess the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of plant extract. Colorimetric MTT assay was used to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of Thalictrum foliolosum. Selectivity Index was also calculated. Results: Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed presence of alkaloids, phenols, triterpenes, saponins and phytosterols. Ethanolic leaf extract of Thalictrum foliolosum (ELETF) exhibited IC50 1000μg/ml against both HeLa cells and normal fibroblasts. Selectivity index of ELETF was calculated to be >200 and =169.7 respectively for chloroquine resistant (RKL-9) and sensitive (MRC-2) strains of the parasite. Conclusions: Based on WHO recommendations ELETF can be classified as highly active antimalarial against CQ-resistant strain and possesses promising activity against CQ-sensitive strain. The high selectivity index (SI>10) also establishes Thalictrum foliolosum as an active antimalarial against both the strains of Plasmodium falciparum.

Filamentous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and geochemical parameters of sediments at the Makran accretionary wedge in the northeastern Arabian Sea off Pakistan were studied. The Makran accretionary complex shows a distinct bottom-simulating reflector, indicating a thick gas-hydrate-bearing horizon between the deformational front and about 1350 m water depth which seals off the upward flow of gas-charged fluids. A field of presently inactive mud diapirs with elevations up to 65 m was discovered in the abyssal plain seawards of the deformation front, suggesting that in the past conditions were favorable for periodic but localized vigorous mud diapirism. Regional destabilization of the gas hydrate leading to focused flow was observed where deep-penetrating, active faults reach the base of the gas-hydrate layer, as in a deeply incised submarine canyon (2100–2500 m water depth). At this location we discovered seeps of methane and H2S-rich fluids associated with chemoautotrophic vent faunas (e.g., Calyptogena sp.). Driven by the accretionary wedge dynamics, the landward part of the gas-hydrate layer below the Makran margin is being progressively uplifted. Due to reduced hydrostatic pressure and rising ocean bottom-water temperatures, gas hydrates are progressively destabilized and dissociated into hydrate water, methane and H2S. Sediment temperatures lie outside the methane stability field wherever water depth is less than 800 m. Above this depth, upward migration of fluids to the seafloor is unimpeded, thus explaining the abundance of randomly distributed gas seeps observed at water depths of 350 to 800 m.

The emergence of resistance against most of the drugs in current use against malaria has aggravated the disease burden in endemic regions. Several plants species have been used for treatment of malaria in traditional/cultural health systems. Bergenia ciliata, used traditionally for treatment of fever by local communities in the Himalayan Region, was evaluated for its plausible role as an antimalarial. Phytochemical screening of the ethanolic leaf extract of B. ciliata (ELEBC) revealed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, steroids and diterpenes. The extract showed good in vitro antiplasmodial activity, with an IC5010 μg/ml. Acute toxicity of the extract was observed to be5 g/kg, which is considered toxicologically safe for oral administration. When tested in vivo, different concentrations of the extract (250 to 1,000 mg/kg) exhibited considerable chemosuppression on day 7, in a dose-dependent manner. Maximum chemosuppression was observed to be 87.50% at 1,000 mg/kg. Administration of ELEBC (750 and 1,000 mg/kg) significantly (p 0.0005) enhanced the mean survival time of mice in comparison to infected control, which exhibited a mean survival time of 8.6 ± 1.5 days. Study reports presence of considerable in vitro and in vivo antimalarial activity in ethanolic leaf extract of B. ciliata for first time. Hence, the ethnopharmacological usage of the plant for treating fever is confirmed with experimental evidence.

BACKGROUND Malaria remains a major global health concern in developing regions of the world. Homeopathy, a holistic system of medicine, has a lot to offer in protecting against malaria. METHODS In the present study, antimalarial efficacy of combination of two homeopathic drugs Chelidonium 30 and nosode 30 has been evaluated in vivo against Plasmodium berghei (P. berghei) infection using Peters 4-day test. Biochemical assays have been performed to assess the levels of hepatic and renal function biomarkers upon drug treatment using diagnostic kits. RESULTS The combination of the drugs demonstrated considerable in vivo antimalarial activity with chemosuppression of 91.45% on day 7. The combination also significantly (p < 0.0005) enhanced the mean survival time of mice which was calculated to be 22.5 ± 6.31 days, whereas it was 8.55 ± 0.83 days in infected control. The increase in levels of the liver function marker enzymes tested in serum of treated mice were significantly less (p < 0.0005) than those observed in infected control on day 10. The serum urea and creatinine used for assessment of renal sufficiency were slightly elevated above normal, but were statistically significant (p < 0.0005) as compared to infected control. CONCLUSIONS The study establishes the effectiveness of the combination against P. berghei in vivo along with the safety of the drugs to the liver and kidney functions of the host.

Biologically produced molecular hydrogen (H2) is characterised by a very strong depletion in deuterium. Although the biological source to the atmosphere is small compared to photochemical or combustion sources, it makes an important contribution to the global isotope budget of H2. Large uncertainties exist in the quantification of the individual production and degradation processes that contribute to the atmospheric budget, and isotope measurements are a tool to distinguish the contributions from the different sources. Measurements of δ D from the various H2 sources are scarce and for biologically produced H2 only very few measurements exist. Here the first systematic study of the isotopic composition of biologically produced H2 is presented. In a first set of experiments, we investigated δ D of H2 produced in a biogas plant, covering different treatments of biogas production. In a second set of experiments, we investigated pure cultures of several H2 producing microorganisms such as bacteria or green algae. A Keeling plot analysis provides a robust overall source signature of δ D = −712‰ (±13‰) for the samples from the biogas reactor (at 38 °C, δ DH2O= +73.4‰), with a fractionation constant &varepsilon;H2-H2O of −689‰ (±20‰) between H2 and the water. The five experiments using pure culture samples from different microorganisms give a mean source signature of δ D = −728‰ (±28‰), and a fractionation constant &varepsilon;H2-H2O of −711‰ (±34‰) between H2 and the water. The results confirm the massive deuterium depletion of biologically produced H2 as was predicted by the calculation of the thermodynamic fractionation factors for hydrogen exchange between H2 and water vapour. Systematic errors in the isotope scale are difficult to assess in the absence of international standards for δ D of H2. As expected for a thermodynamic equilibrium, the fractionation factor is temperature dependent, but largely independent of the substrates used and the H2 production conditions. The equilibrium fractionation coefficient is positively correlated with temperature and we measured a rate of change of 2.3‰ / °C between 45 °C and 60 °C, which is in general agreement with the theoretical prediction of 1.4‰ / °C. Our best experimental estimate for &varepsilon;H2-H2O at a temperature of 20 °C is −731‰ (±20‰) for biologically produced H2. This value is close to the predicted value of −722‰, and we suggest using these values in future global H2 isotope budget calculations and models with adjusting to regional temperatures for calculating δ D values.

Differences in isotopic composition between the various sources of H-2 are large, but only a few measurements have been carried out to constrain them. Two conflicting values have been published for H-2 from biomass burning. Both rely on the assumption that the isotopic composition of H-2 should scale with the isotopic composition of the precipitation at the location where the biomass grew. Here we test this hypothesis using 18 wood samples collected from various locations around the globe. The sample locations cover a range of delta D content of H-2 in precipitation, from below -120 parts per thousand in Siberia and Canada to -15 parts per thousand in Zimbabwe. The results confirm the predicted dependence of the H-2 isotopic composition on the precipitation in the sampling region. The water content itself is found to at most slightly affect the results. Furthermore, delta D of H-2 depends strongly on combustion efficiency. Thus, the isotopic composition of H-2 from biomass burning shows a strong variability around the globe and between different stages of a fire. It is suggested that, rather than a global bulk number, global models that attempt to reproduce the spatial and temporal distribution of delta D in H-2 should incorporate explicitly the variability of delta D(H-2) from biomass burning on delta D in precipitation.

[1] We use transit time distributions calculated from tracer data together with in situ measurements of N2O to estimate the concentration of biologically produced N2O ([N2O]xs) and N2O production rates in the central North Atlantic Ocean. Our approach to estimation of N2O production rates integrates the effects of potentially varying production and decomposition mechanisms along the transport path of a water mass. We find that previously used approaches overestimate the oceanic equilibrium N2O concentrations by 8–13% and thus underestimate the strength of N2O sources in large parts of the water column. Thus the quantitative characteristics of the [N2O]xs/AOU relationship used as an indicator of nitrification are distorted. We developed a new parameterization of N2O production during nitrification depending linearly on AOU and exponentially on temperature and depth, which can be applied to calculate N2O production due to nitrification in the entire ocean including oxygen minimum zones.

International audience; In January 2003, a major inflow of cold and oxygen-rich North Sea Water in the Baltic Sea terminated an ongoing stagnation period in parts of the central Baltic Sea. In order to investigate the role of North Sea Water inflow to the Baltic Sea with regard to the production of nitrous oxide (N2O), we measured dissolved and atmospheric N2O at 26 stations in the southern and central Baltic Sea in October 2003. At the time of our cruise, water renewal had proceeded to the eastern Gotland Basin, whereas the western Gotland Basin was still unaffected by the inflow. The deep water renewal was detectable in the distributions of temperature, salinity, and oxygen concentrations as well as in the distribution of the N2O concentrations: Shallow stations in the Kiel Bight and Pomeranian Bight were well-ventilated with uniform N2O concentrations near equilibrium throughout the water column. In contrast, stations in the deep basins, such as the Bornholm and the Gotland Deep, showed a clear stratification with deep water affected by North Sea Water. Inflowing North Sea Water led to changed environmental conditions, especially enhanced oxygen (O2) or declining hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations, thus, affecting the conditions for the production of N2O. Pattern of N2O profiles and correlations with parameters like oxygen and nitrate differed between the basins. The dominant production pathway seems to be nitrification rather than denitrification. No indications for advection of N2O by North Sea Water were found. A rough budget revealed a significant surplus of in situ produced N2O after the inflow. However, due to the permanent halocline, it can be assumed that the formed N2O does not reach the atmosphere. Hydrographic aspects therefore are decisive factors determining the final release of produced N2O to the atmosphere.

We measured the vertical water column distribution of nitrous oxide (N2O) during the European Iron Fertilization Experiment (EIFEX) in the subpolar South Atlantic Ocean during February/March 2004 (R/V Polarstern cruise ANT XXI/3). Despite a huge build‐up and sedimentation of a phytoplankton bloom, a comparison of the N2O concentrations within the fertilized patch with concentrations measured outside the fertilized patch revealed no N2O accumulation within 33 days. This is in contrast to a previous study in the Southern Ocean, where enhanced N2O accumulation occurred in the pycnocline. Thus, we conclude that Fe fertilization does not necessarily trigger additional N2O formation and we caution that a predicted radiative offset due to a Fe‐induced additional release of oceanic N2O might be overestimated. Rapid sedimentation events during EIFEX might have hindered the build‐up of N2O and suggest, that not only the production of phytoplankton biomass but also its pathway in the water column needs to be considered if N2O radiative offset is modeled.

The vertical distribution of dissolved hydroxylamine (NH2OH) was measured for the first time at 10 stations in the western, southern and central Baltic Sea during a cruise in February 2004. The distribution of dissolved NH2OH was complex due to the interplay of in-situ production in the shallow western and southern Baltic Sea and the hydrographical setting in the central Baltic Sea caused by the major North Sea water inflow event in January 2003. We conclude that nitrification might be the major source of NH2OH, whereas anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) appeared to be negligible. We suggest that a "fresh" nitrifying system, in which the NH+4-oxidation rates exceeded the NO−2-oxidation rates, favoured the build-up of NH2OH.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) was measured during the first German SOLAS (Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study) cruise in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean on board R/V Meteor during October/November 2002. About 900 atmospheric and dissolved N2O measurements were performed with a semi-continuous GC-ECD system equipped with a seawater-gas equilibrator. Surface waters along the main transect at 10°N showed no distinct longitudinal gradient. Instead, N2O saturations were highly variable ranging from 97% to 118% (in the Guinea Dome Area, 11°N, 24°W). When approaching the continental shelf of West Africa, N2O surface saturations went up to 113%. N2O saturations in the region of the equatorial upwelling (at 0–1.5°N, 23.5–26°W) were correlated with decreasing sea surface temperatures and showed saturations up to 109%. The overall mean N2O saturation was 104 ± 4% indicating that the tropical North Atlantic Ocean is a net source of atmospheric N2O.

Background & objectives: Albizia lebbeck Benth. (Leguminosae) has long been used in Indian traditional medicine. The current study was designed to test antimalarial activity of ethanolic bark extract of A. lebbeck (EBEAL). Methods: EBEAL was prepared by soxhlet extraction and subjected to phytochemical analysis. The extract was evaluated for its in vitro antimalarial activity against Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine (CQ) sensitive (MRC2) and CQ resistant (RKL9) strains. Cytotoxicity (CC 50 ) of extract against HeLa cells was evaluated. Median lethal dose (LD 50 ) was determined to assess safety of EBEAL in BALB/c mice. Schizonticidal (100-1000 mg/kg) and preventive (100-750 mg/kg) activities of EBEAL were evaluated against P. berghei. Curative activity (100-750 mg/kg) of extract was also evaluated. Results: Phytochemical screening revealed presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, terpenes and phytosterols. The extract exhibited IC 50 of 8.2 µg/ml (MRC2) and 5.1 µg/ml (RKL9). CC 50 of extract on HeLa cell line was calculated to be >1000 µg/ml. EBEAL showed selectivity indices (SI) of >121.9 and >196.07 against MRC2 and RKL9 strains of P. falciparum, respectively. The effect of organic coating on the heterogeneous ice nucleation (IN) efficiency of dust particles was investigated at simulated cirrus cloud conditions in the AIDA cloud chamber of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. Arizona test dust (ATD) and the clay mineral illite were used as surrogates for atmospheric dust aerosols. The dry dust samples were dispersed into a 3.7?m3 aerosol vessel and either directly transferred into the 84?m3 cloud simulation chamber or coated before with the semi-volatile products from the reaction of ?-pinene with ozone in order to mimic the coating of atmospheric dust particles with secondary organic aerosol (SOA) substances. The ice-active fraction was measured in AIDA expansion cooling experiments as a function of the relative humidity with respect to ice, RHi, in the temperature range from 205 to 210?K. Almost all uncoated dust particles with diameters between 0.1 and 1.0??m acted as efficient deposition mode ice nuclei at RHi between 105 and 120%. This high ice nucleation efficiency was markedly suppressed by coating with SOA. About 20% of the ATD particles coated with a SOA mass fraction of 17?wt% were ice-active at RHi between 115 and 130%, and only 10% of the illite particles coated with an SOA mass fraction of 41?wt% were ice-active at RHi between 160 and 170%. Only a minor fraction of pure SOA particles were ice-active at RHi between 150 and 190%. Strong IN activation of SOA particles was observed only at RHi above 200%, which is clearly above water saturation at the given temperature. The IN suppression and the shift of the heterogeneous IN onset to higher RHi seem to depend on the coating thickness or the fractional surface coverage of the mineral particles. The results indicate that the heterogeneous ice nucleation potential of atmospheric mineral particles may also be suppressed if they are coated with secondary organics.
