2. Quantifying Zinc Contamination in Laboratory Syringes

Abstract

The zinc contamination of zinc-catalyzed rubber-containing syringes was quantified to emphasize the importance of understanding sources of contamination in laboratory settings. In doing so, specific factors that influence zinc contamination in laboratory syringes were identified. The effect of syringe type, time, the type of solution and its concentration, and indirectly, pH was examined. Two syringe types were tested: Covidien and BD. Three time durations were examined: 0 days, 1 day, and 14 days. Three challenge solution types were tested: sucrose, tartaric acid, and saline. Three challenge solution concentrations were studied: 0.1 g/L, 1.0 g/L, and 10.0 g/L. pH values ranging from 2.13 to 7.00 were examined. The zinc concentration extracted from the syringes increased as pH decreased, increased as time increased, and when the solution was contained in a BD syringe. The maximum concentration of zinc extracted from a syringe was 308 ppb.

3. Risk of hepatitis C virus transmission through drug preparation equipment: a systematic and methodological review.

Abstract

The use of blood-contaminated drug preparation equipment is believed to be associated with the transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among injection drug users (IDUs), but the extent of HCV infection risk is unclear. The objective of this review was to appraise the evidence regarding HCV incidence associated with the use of drug preparation equipment such as drug mixing containers, filters and water. In June 2007, cohort and case–control studies examining the association of HCV incidence with the sharing of drug preparation equipment were identified by searching electronic reference databases as well as the reference lists of published papers. Ten studies (seven cohort and three nested case–control) met the inclusion criteria for the review. The relative risk of HCV infection associated with drug preparation equipment were mainly between 2.0 and 5.9; however, the precision of the estimates from individual studies were marked by wide confidence intervals. Few studies exist to allow an adequate assessment of the individual contributions of containers, filters and water to HCV incidence. The major methodological limitations of reviewed studies were short follow-up times, inadequate control of confounders and lack of exclusion of periods when IDUs were not at risk for HCV infection through drug injection. Current evidence implicating the association of drug preparation equipment with HCV incidence is limited by several methodological concerns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Dose delivery characteristics of the injector gun was determined during the period using both weight and penetration measurements. Dose delivery measurements were made by weighing on an analytical Mettler balance and comparing quantitatively the delivery capabilities of each barrel size, 1 cc and 2.4 cc. Penetration characteristics for each of the crowned and uncrowned head orifice sizes were determined for the equine, ovine, caprine, bovine, canine and porcine. A summary of these findings for each species tested is given.

Abstract

Metal kit is made up of seven fused hollow tube shapes. Etchings on top of the tube state "MILITARY PAT MAY 22, 1900" and "THE RANDALL FAICHNEY CO BOSTON U.S.A." The center tube contains a hypodermic syringe. One tube contains a corked tube with "soluble hypodermic tablets" and "poison" identified as nitroglycerin, dicitalin and strychnine. The label on the tube also lists "Sharp and Dohme Baltimore" as the manufacturer of the pills. Other tubes in this kit are either empty or have pill tubes that cannot be removed.

Abstract

This syringe is made of glass and red rubber, although the end of the rubber tip has broken off and exhibits a crack running down one side. Its cylindrical wooden case is composed of two halves that slot together. The shape of this syringe suggests that may be an irrigation syringe, used to clean wounds before dressing them, or possibly a urethral syringe that soldiers used to deliver chemical prophylaxes that protected them against sexually transmitted diseases.

Abstract

The syringe is made of metal and has two tips on one end and a plunger on the other, which is now immobile. An upwards-facing arrow is stamped into the metal near one tip, while a downwards-facing arrow is stamped near the other. This suggests that the tips are unidirectional, with one intended to withdraw fluid from a subject and the other intended to introduce fluid. In some sources this type of syringe is called an embalming syringe or a syringe with an embalmer's valve. While this device's intended function is unclear, it may have been an aspirator, which was used to remove fluids from live patients or during cavity embalming.
