2. Questionable and Unquestionable in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract

We derive the basic postulates of quantum physics from a few very simple operational assumptions based exclusively on the relative frequencies of observable events (measurement operations and measurement outcomes). We isolate a notion which can be identified with the system's own state, in the sense that it characterizes the system's probabilistic behavior against all possible measurement operations. We investigate some important features of the possible states of the system. All those investigations remain within the framework of classical Kolmogorovian probability theory, meaning that any physical system (traditionally categorized as classical or quantum) that can be described in operational terms can be described within classical Kolmogorovian probability theory. In the second part of the paper we show that anything that can be described in operational terms can, if we wish, be represented in the Hilbert space quantum mechanical formalism. The outcomes of each measurement can be represented by a system of pairwise orthogonal closed subspaces spanning the entire Hilbert space; the states of the system can be represented by pure state operators, and the probabilities of the outcomes can be reproduced by the usual trace formula. Each real valued quantity can be associated with a suitable self-adjoint operator, such that the possible measurement results are the eigenvalues and the outcome events are represented by the eigenspaces, according to the spectral decomposition of the operator in question. This suggests that the basic postulates of quantum theory are in fact analytic statements: they do not tell us anything about a physical system beyond the fact that the system can be described in operational terms. Abstract

Two triangular factorizations of the deformation gradient tensor are studied. The first, termed the Lagrangian formulation, consists of an upper-triangular stretch premultiplied by a rotation tensor. The second, termed the Eulerian formulation, consists of a lower-triangular stretch postmultiplied by a different rotation tensor. The corresponding stretch tensors are denoted as the Lagrangian and Eulerian Laplace stretches, respectively. Kinematics (with physical interpretations) and work conjugate stress measures are analyzed and compared for each formulation. While the Lagrangian formulation has been used in prior work for constitutive modeling of anisotropic and hyper\-elastic materials, the Eulerian formulation, which may be advantageous for modeling isotropic solids and fluids with no physically identifiable reference configuration, does not seem to have been used elsewhere in a continuum mechanical setting., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Lack of access to modern forms of energy hampers efforts to reduce poverty. The provision of electricity to off-grid communities is therefore a long-standing developmental goal. Yet, many off-grid electrification projects neglect mid- and long-term operation and maintenance costs. When this is the case, electricity services are unlikely to be affordable to the communities that are the project's primary target. Here we show that, compared with diesel-powered electricity generation systems, solar photovoltaic systems are more affordable to no less than 36% of the unelectrified populations in East Asia, South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. We do so by developing geo-referenced estimates of affordability at a high level of resolution (1 km2). The analysis illustrates the differences in affordability that may be found at the subnational level, which underscores that electrification investments should be informed by subnational data.

On the basis of what I call physico-formalist philosophy of mathematics, I will develop an amended account of the Kantian--Reichenbachian conception of constitutive a priori. It will be shown that the features (attributes, qualities, properties) attributed to a real object are not possessed by the object as a "thing-in-itself"; they require a physical theory by means of which these features are constituted. It will be seen that the existence of such a physical theory implies that a physical object can possess a property only if other contingently existing physical objects exist; therefore, the intrinsic--extrinsic distinction is flawed., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

Climate change has been a known problem for a long time, but nowadays its effects becoming more powerful and palpable in our everyday life. Therefore, one of the most important topics of the social sciences nowadays, the identification of the sustainable solutions. As the problem of the climate change is very complex, we have to examine it from different aspects/territories/industries. Logistics is one of these territories. Today logistics is more and more criticized as the average supply chains contribute in a highlighted way to the environmental pollution. In the past academic discussion, Short Supply Chains appeared as a potential solution but so far only in the field of agricultural sciences yet. One of our research aims is the definition of the basic shortened supply chain framework within a supply chain can be called 'shortened' in Zala County. For this, we will examine the implemented short supply chains on the ground of the literature review. We will seek the answer for the second important aim, which is the potential application of this technique, with qualitative methods among Zala County enterprises.

Abstract

Background: Progressive atelectasis regularly occurs during general anaesthesia; hence, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is often applied. Individualised PEEP titration may reduce the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) and improve oxygenation as compared to fixed PEEP settings; however, evidence is lacking. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021282228). A systematic search in four databases (MEDLINE Via PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and Web of Science) was performed on 14 October 2021 and updated on 26 April 2024. We searched for randomised controlled trials comparing the effects of individually titrated versus fixed PEEP strategies during abdominal surgeries. The primary endpoint was the incidence of PPCs. The secondary endpoints included the PaO2/FiO2 at the end of surgery, individually set PEEP value, vasopressor requirements, and respiratory mechanics. Results: We identified 30 trials (2602 patients). The incidence of PPCs was significantly lower among patients in the individualised group (RR = 0.70, CI: 0.58–0.84). A significantly higher PaO2/FiO2 ratio was found in the individualised group as compared to controls at the end of the surgery (MD = 55.99 mmHg, 95% CI: 31.78–80.21). Individual PEEP was significantly higher as compared to conventional settings (MD = 6.27 cm H2O, CI: 4.30–8.23). Fewer patients in the control group needed vasopressor support; however, this result was non-significant. Lung-function-related outcomes showed better respiratory mechanics in the individualised group (Cstat: MD = 11.92 cm H2O 95% CI: 6.40–17.45). Conclusions: Our results show that individually titrated PEEP results in fewer PPCs and better oxygenation in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Expanding the investigations related to land price analysis, this study demonstrates the territorial aspects of the issue through the example of Bács-Kiskun county enriching the methodology of spatial structure researches. The applied correlation analysis confirmed our assumption that scarcely more than a decade after the change of ownership relations, great differences can be detected among land prices, which reflect the main features of the county’s spatial structure. The land price map of Bács-Kiskun County demonstrates the main features of the spatial structrure and the characteristics of the centre-periphery relationships at municipal level. High land prices are typical in the areas which are rich in innovations and can be characterized with denser texture. Getting farther from them, the land prices become lower. Their temporal changes are also consistent with the interactions taking place in the spatial structure.

45. The first analysis of a multicentre paediatric supracondylar humerus fracture (SCHF) registry by fracture type.

Abstract

Introduction: Supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHFs) represent a significant segment of paediatric bone injuries, posing unique challenges due to their potential for severe complications. This study aims to provide a detailed analysis of the surgically treated SCHF cases recorded in our registry. Materials and Methods: Prospectively collected data from seven institutes were retrospectively analysed using the Hungarian SCHF Registry, with data about surgically treated paediatric patients with SCHFs. We created three groups based on fracture type (Gartland IIA, IIB and III), and compared their preoperative, operative, and postoperative data. We analysed differences between the groups using the Chi-Squared test or Fisher’s Exact test for categorical variables. The Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test was performed for continuous variables. If there was a significant difference between the groups, we conducted Dunn’s post-hoc analysis. Results: The fracture type was available for 214 patients (Gartland IIA group contained 31, IIB 121, and III 62 children). Our investigation highlighted notable patterns: lower oxygen saturation levels at initial assessment correlated with higher fracture severity (p = 0.0125); Body Mass Index (BMI) did not significantly influence the type of fracture (p = 0.2254); neither the mechanism of injury (flexion vs. extension) (p = 0.5606), nor the initial radial pulse (p = 0.0647) showed significant difference; the complexity of fractures was directly proportional to operative time (p < 0.01); less severe fractures required longer time to heal before pin removal (p = 0.0125); while severe fractures showed a tendency towards neurological complications, the overall complication rates did not vary significantly across different fracture types (p = 0.0988). Conclusions: Our study emphasizes the significance of initial oxygen saturation levels as potential indicators of fracture severity. It also stresses the need for detailed attention to neurological complications and the prolonged use of pins, thereby highlighting the importance of customized treatment strategies in paediatric SCHFs. Our research involved 110 high school students. The aim of our present research was to determine the teacher's interaction style from the high school students' perspective using the QTI measurement tool. The purpose of the research was to assess how students see the teacher's classroom activities and how the teachers see themselves, and also to see whether there is a difference between the teacher's point of view and that of the students'. The questionnaire contains 48 items. The QTI measurement tool can serve as a valuable source of information for teachers in comparing their self-assessment with the student's view, which can obviously enhance their professional development.
