AbstractAnalysis of the qualitative signature of fatty acids in tissues of organisms is an increasingly utilized tool in studies of trophic ecology in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we studied a colonial waterbird, the black-headed gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus, nesting in three colonies. We aimed to investigate whether fatty acid composition of its eggs is affected by the location of the colony (reflecting the spatial variation in habitat composition and, in turn, female diet at the time of egg formation), and the egg laying sequence (reflecting the temporal variation in female diet). We found that the composition of fatty acids in eggs of black-headed gulls differed among colonies, but not among subsequent eggs within the clutch. We interpret these results in the context of spatial differences in the diet of females breeding in different colonies and a lack of temporal variation in the diet of individual females. The pattern of the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids reflected the contribution of aquatic/terrestrial prey to their diet, and was consistent with the area of water courses around the colonies. High levels of omega-6:omega-3 can promote inflammation and thus lead to increased susceptibility to antigens. Further studies with prey sampling are required to reconstruct the diet composition of females during egg formation in more detail.

Artykuł prezentuje koncepcję wychowania morskiego realizowaną w środowisku harcerstwa żeńskiego w okresie międzywojennym. Do opracowania tematu wykorzystano materiały archiwalne przechowywane w Archiwum Akt Nowych, Muzeum Harcerstwa oraz w zbiorach Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej KUL i Głównej Biblioteki Lekarskiej. Ponadto cenne informacje pozyskano z zasobów prasy harcerskiej, a także opracowań tematycznych, zwłaszcza tych o charakterze wspomnieniowym. Analiza danych źródłowych wskazuje na stopniowe wdrażanie idei wychowania morskiego, które dokonało się początkowo w ramach działalności środowisk harcerskich we Władywostoku, a następnie w Wejherowie. Od drugiej połowy lat dwudziestych zauważalny stał się rozwój ruchu wodniackiego wśród harcerek, który związany był początkowo z drużynami męskimi z Poznania, Wilna i Warszawy. W 1931 r. zastęp XIII Błękitnej Drużyny Harcerek im. Gen. Zamoyskiej w Poznaniu uzyskał charakter żeglarski. Od tego czasu harcerki rozpoczęły serię szkoleń specjalistycznych na potrzeby jachtingu morskiego. W 1934 r. harcerki pozyskały samodzielny jacht szkoleniowy „Grażyna”. W drugiej połowie lat trzydziestych samodzielne załogi kobiece pływały po Zatoce Gdańskiej i wodach Bałtyku. Wychowanie morskie związane było z polityką morską państwa. Podlegało też w tym czasie założeniom wychowawczym harcerstwa i było popularyzowane na łamach prasy harcerskiej. Do najwybitniejszych postaci związanych z żeglarstwem kobiecym należały harcerki: Jadwiga Skąpska-Truscoe, Jadwiga Wolffowa, Janina Bartkiewicz.

Artykuł prezentuje specyfikę animowanej produkcji filmowej „Podwójnie wolne. Prawa polityczne kobiet 1918” (2020) poświęconej problematyce ruchu emancypacyjnego kobiet w XIX i początkach XX wieku. Walory edukacyjne filmu opierają się na nośnym wątku i ciekawym pomyśle jego wizualizacji. Tematyka i forma artystyczna filmu rozpatrywana jest w kontekście zapotrzebowania na motywy kobiece w szkolnej edukacji historycznej. Odpowiedzią na tę potrzebę jest opracowany zestaw pomocy dydaktycznych, które mają za zadanie usprawnić odbiór filmu przez uczniów. W jego skład weszły m.in.: scenariusze, materiały pomocnicze i uzupełniające przeznaczone dla odbiorców zróżnicowanych pod względem wieku. Biorąc pod uwagę niejednorodny poziom edukacyjny użytkowników, zaproponowano odpowiednio dobraną pulę metod i strategii dydaktycznych służących osiągnięciu zamierzonych w scenariuszach celów. Film wraz z zestawem pomocy dydaktycznych stanowi wartościową ofertę przeznaczoną do użytku przez środowiska szkolne i pozaszkolne.

The aim of the paper is to propose a data model for editing historical records using the example of Karol Perthées’ works from the late 18th century. These consist of cartographic sketches, elaborated on the basis of parochial questionnaires and the maps of palatinates of the Crown, which are at a scale of 1:225,000. The model links the advantages of direct source data representation with scalability and flexibility features, which provide analytical possibilities. The sketches are indexed using the INDXR application and the structure of the model reflects the structure of the source. The maps were analyzed in a GIS environment, but no georeferencing was performed. The data collected separately as symbols and annotations were treated independently and were linked via features. The model is illustrated by a preliminary study of materials covering the area of the Zemborzyce parish near Lublin.

IntroductionThis study aimed to identify the characteristics of Campylobacter isolated from wild birds (Black-headed gulls Chroicocephalus ridibundus and Great tits Parus major) and collect surface water samples (from rivers, ponds, ornamental lakes, freshwater beaches). Research material included 33 Campylobacter isolates. All the strains were isolated by different monitoring and surveillance plans.MethodsThe prevalence of selected genes (flaA, cadF, iam, cdtB, wlaN, sodB, tet0) encoding virulence factors and resistance among Campylobacter spp. was assessed by the PCR method. The genetic similarities of isolates were determined by Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE). The susceptibility of Campylobacter isolates to clinically important antimicrobials: erythromycin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin, previously assessed by E-test, was presented in the form of drug susceptibility profiles depending on the origin of the isolates.ResultsThe cadF, flaA, cdtB, and sodB genes exhibited the highest detection rate. Statistically significant differences between the presence of wlaN virulence genes were noted among different species of the isolates. No genetically identical isolates were found. The most numerous antibiotic susceptibility profile included strains susceptible to all antibiotics studied (profile A-33.3%). The second most common were the tetracycline - and ciprofloxacin-resistant (profile B-27.2%), and tetracycline-resistant profile (C-24.2%) respectively.DiscussionThe study revealed the virulent properties of Campylobacter isolated from water samples, and wild birds, and high resistance rates to tetracycline, and fluoroquinolones. The lack of genetic relatedness among strains isolated from water, and birds may indicate other sources of surface water contamination with Campylobacter bacteria than birds. The presence of Campylobacter spp. in wild birds could also have other environmental origins.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace element that plays a key role in several biological processes, including transcription, signaling, and catalysis. A subcellular network of transporters ensures adequate distribution of Zn to facilitate homeostasis. Among these are a family of importers, the Zrt/Irt-like proteins (ZIP), which consists of 14 members (ZIP1-ZIP14) that mobilize Zn from the extracellular domain and organelles into the cytosol. Expression of these transporters varies among tissues and during developmental stages, and their distribution at various cellular locations is essential for defining the net cellular Zn transport. Normally, the ion is bound to proteins or sequestered in organelles and vesicles. However, though research has focused on Zn internalization in mammalian cells, little is known about Zn mobilization within organelles, including within the nuclei under both normal and pathological conditions. Analyses from stomach and colon tissues isolated from mouse suggested that ZIP11 is the only ZIP transporter localized to the nucleus of mammalian cells, yet no clear cellular role has been attributed to this protein. We hypothesized that ZIP11 is essential to maintaining nuclear Zn homeostasis in mammalian cells. To test this, we utilized HeLa cells, as research in humans correlated elevated expression of ZIP11 with poor prognosis in cervical cancer patients. We stably knocked down ZIP11 in HeLa cancer cells and investigated the effect of Zn dysregulation in vitro. Our data show that ZIP11 knockdown (KD) reduced HeLa cells proliferation due to nuclear accumulation of Zn. RNA-seq analyses revealed that genes related to angiogenesis, apoptosis, mRNA metabolism, and signaling pathways are dysregulated. Although the KD cells undergoing nuclear Zn stress can activate the homeostasis response by MTF1 and MT1, the RNA-seq analyses showed that only ZIP14 (an importer expressed on the plasma membrane and endocytic vesicles) is mildly induced, which may explain the sensitivity to elevated levels of extracellular Zn. Consequently, ZIP11 KD HeLa cells have impaired migration, invasive properties and decreased mitochondrial potential. Furthermore, KD of ZIP11 delayed cell cycle progression and rendered an enhanced senescent state in HeLa cells, pointing to a novel mechanism whereby maintenance of nuclear Zn homeostasis is essential for cancer progression.

Artykuł prezentuje pracę harcerek na rzecz pomocy dzieciom w Lublinie w latach 1939–1944. Troska o dzieci stanowiła jedno ze zobowiązań harcerskich wynikających z misji tej organizacji rozumianej jako pomoc bliźnim, szczególnie akcentowanej w czasie wojny. Podjęcie tematu służby dziecku sprzyja zwróceniu uwagi na ten aspekt wsparcia ludności cywilnej przez środowisko harcerskie, który pozostawał przeważnie w cieniu bardziej spektakularnej służby wojskowej, a był istotny z punktu widzenia ochrony życia, zdrowia i psychiki najmłodszych ofiar wojny. Analiza problemu oparta została na relacjach lubelskich harcerek, spisywanych na potrzeby zachowania pamięci o wojennych wydarzeniach. Materiały wspomnieniowe zdeponowane w Bibliotece KUL weszły w częściowo zmodyfikowanej formie do opracowań historii lubelskiego harcerstwa żeńskiego. Po zweryfikowaniu zawartości przekazów drukowanych i porównaniu z wersjami nieopublikowanymi, w artykule odtworzono w układzie problemowo-chronologicznym udział harcerek w opiece nad dzieckiem w latach 1939–1944 w formie pomocy doraźnej, instytucjonalnej oraz okolicznościowej. W uzyskanym obrazie harcerskiej służby dziecku zarysował się zarówno schemat planowanych na wypadek wojny działań, jak i szereg unikatowych rozwiązań spowodowanych potrzebą chwili. Są one świadectwem pełnej poświęcenia postawy harcerek, które może stanowić inspirację do kontynuowania ducha wychowania harcerskiego, wciąż aktualnego w obliczu wyzwań współczesności.

Abstract Aims Data regarding the optimal systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR) for coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with hypertension and a history of heart failure (HF) are limited. Accordingly, using data from a large clinical trial, we investigated the association between SBP and heart rate and subsequent adverse outcomes in CAD patients with a history of HF, and we aimed to better understand how pre‐existing HF impacts outcomes among patients with CAD. Methods and results Among 22 576 CAD patients enrolled in the INternational VErapamil SR‐Trandolapril STudy (INVEST), 1256 were identified with a history of physician‐diagnosed HF New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class 1–3 at entry. The primary outcome was the first occurrence of all‐cause death, myocardial infarction (MI), or stroke. Cox proportional‐hazards models adjusted for pre‐specified covariates were constructed to estimate risk among the HF cohort compared with a case‐matched sample from the non‐HF cohort. At a mean 2.5 years' follow‐up, those with prior HF had a higher risk of the primary outcome (hazard ratio (HR) 2.55, 95% confidence interval 2.30–2.83, P < 0.0001). Among those with history of HF, a low (140 mmHg) SBP and heart rate ≥ 85 b.p.m. were associated with increased risk for adverse outcomes, which persisted after covariate adjustment. Conclusions In patients with CAD, a physician diagnosis of HF at baseline portended a higher risk for death, MI, or stroke than in those without an HF history. Achieving SBP of 120–140 mmHg and heart rate < 85 b.p.m. was associated with a better outcome in patients with known HF and CAD.

BACKGROUND: Allogeneic mesenchymal precursor cells (MPCs) injected during left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation may contribute to myocardial recovery. This trial explores the safety and efficacy of this strategy. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this multicenter, double-blind, sham-procedure controlled trial, 30 patients were randomized (2:1) to intramyocardial injection of 25 million MPCs or medium during LVAD implantation. The primary safety end point was incidence of infectious myocarditis, myocardial rupture, neoplasm, hypersensitivity reaction, and immune sensitization (90 days after randomization). Key efficacy end points were functional status and ventricular function while temporarily weaned from LVAD support (90 days after randomization). Patients were followed up until transplant or 12 months after randomization, whichever came first. Mean age was 57.4 (±13.6) years, mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 18.1%, and 66.7% were destination therapy LVADs. No safety events were observed. Successful temporary LVAD weaning was achieved in 50% of MPC and 20% of control patients at 90 days (P=0.24); the posterior probability that MPCs increased the likelihood of successful weaning was 93%. At 90 days, 3 deaths (30%) occurred in control patients, and none occurred in MPC patients. Mean left ventricular ejection fraction after successful wean was 24.0% (MPC=10) and 22.5% (control=2; P=0.56). At 12 months, 30% of MPC patients and 40% of control patients were successfully temporarily weaned from LVAD support (P=0.69), and 6 deaths (30%) occurred in MPC patients. Donor-specific HLA sensitization developed in 2 MPC and 3 control patients and resolved by 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: In this preliminary trial, administration of MPCs appeared to be safe, and there was a potential signal of efficacy. Future studies will evaluate the potential for higher or additional doses to enhance the ability to wean LVAD recipients off support. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. W budynku Wydawnictwa Sióstr Loretanek w Warszawie-Rembertowie powstaje muzeum poświęcone pamięci bł. ks. Ignacego Kłopotowskiego. Przygotowywana od kilku lat ekspozycja stała ma popularyzować nie tylko osobę i działalność wydawniczą założyciela Zgromadzenia, ale również promować kulturę słowa drukowanego na bazie prezentowanego zasobu muzealnego. W placówce wyeksponowano postać I. Kłopotowskiego pod kątem jego osobistego zaangażowania w pracę publicystyczną i drukarską, a także przesłania duchowego, realizowanego w pracy wydawniczej przez zgromadzenie loretanek aż po czasy współczesne. Zwiedzający poznają więc wątek biograficzny w jego społecznym wymiarze, jakim było dzieło ewangelizacji przez słowo drukowane, wspieranie rozwoju czytelnictwa oraz podnoszenie poziomu kulturalnego i oświatowego na tle zmieniających się warunków politycznych. W muzeum będzie można zobaczyć również warunki techniczne i efekty działalności wydawnictwa w postaci zestawień ekspozycyjnych złożonych z maszyn drukarskich, urządzeń oraz narzędzi specjalistycznych (zecerskich, drukarskich i introligatorskich) czy wybranych egzemplarzy książek i gazet. Ekspozycję wzbogacają nowoczesne pod względem technicznym formy prezentacji danych, które wpływają na urozmaicenie procesu odbioru informacji zawartych w koncepcji muzeum. Muzeum Wydawnictwa Sióstr Loretanek wpisuje się tym samym w aktualny nurt wizualizacji przeszłości historycznej zauważalny w obszarze muzeów kościelnych, w którym eksponaty i materialne pamiątki przeszłości wraz z zastosowanymi rozwiązaniami multimedialnymi współtworzą wartościową pod wieloma względami opowieść. Udostępnienie muzeum szerokiemu gronu odbiorców ubogaci kościelną ofertę muzealną, propagującą zasoby dziedzictwa historycznego Kościoła w zakresie wartości religijnych, duchowych i edukacyjnych.

Sylwetka naukowo-dydaktyczna prof. Stanisława Litaka obejmuje znaczący obszar badań nad historią społeczno-religijną epoki nowożytnej, realizowaną w trakcie wieloletniej pracy zawodowej na Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim w latach 1961–2005. W trakcie aktywności zawodowej prof. Litak współtworzył lubelskie środowisko badaczy struktur Kościoła nowożytnego i geografii historycznej oraz reprezentował je na forum międzynarodowym. Równorzędną rolę w Jego naukowych zainteresowaniach pełniła historia oświaty epoki przedrozbiorowej, która zaowocowała autorstwem popularnego podręcznika akademickiego o historii wychowania, wykorzystywanego do dziś przez studentów zainteresowanych zagadnieniami historii edukacji. Dualizm pracy naukowej odzwierciedlają również okoliczności zatrudnienia prof. Litaka zarówno w Instytucie Historii oraz w Instytucie Pedagogiki KUL. Pokłosiem lat pracy są liczne publikacje naukowe, utrzymane w konwencji przyjętych kierunków badawczych. Nieoceniona pozostaje też spuścizna Profesora w postaci kapitału ludzkiego – seminarzystów, uczniów naukowych, współpracowników, którzy podejmują trud kontynuacji obranych przez Niego kierunków badawczych. Profesor Litak wyznaczył standardy w pracy naukowej, które pozostają godne naśladowania, dał się również poznać jako ciepły, skromny, ale wymagający nauczyciel akademicki i kierownik zespołów pracowniczych. Warto podkreślić i docenić Jego zasługi dla humanistyki polskiej, ze względu na wartość merytoryczną prac, które na stałe weszły do historiografii. Pamięć o Nim, jako o człowieku nauki, który niósł ze sobą wartości badawcze i utrzymywał dobre relacje międzyludzkie, zasługuje również na propagowanie w środowiskach akademickich.

Objectives : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease of connective tissue characterised by chronic course with periods of exacerbation and remission. Even in the early stages of the disease patients report the occurrence of fatigue and sleep disorders. Reduced sleep quality and chronic fatigue are common among patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of the research was to evaluate the severity of fatigue and sleep quality assessment among patients hospitalised with rheumatoid arthritis and to determine the relation between the level of symptoms of fatigue and sleep quality and variables such as: age, gender, disease duration, marital status, applied pharmacological treatment, and pain intensity. Materials and methods : The study involved 38 patients (12 men and 26 women) hospitalised in the Rheumatologic Ward of the Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Hospital of the University of Medical Sciences. The average age of the entire group was 56.26 years. Fatigue was evaluated with use of Polish version of Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F), while in order to evaluate sleep quality within the examined group of patients the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used. Results : Patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the analysed group have lower sleep quality, and within subjects with such a diagnosis the fatigue is present. The relation was found between fatigue and such variables as: age, illness duration, marital status, applied pharmacological treatment, and severity of pain. Sleep quality within patients with RA is correlated by such variables as: age, gender, applied pharmaceutical treatment, and severity of pain. It was identified that patients with lower sleep quality experience increased levels of fatigue. Conclusions : There is a need to clarify which factors determine the level of fatigue and sleep quality in patients suffering from RA in future population-based research and to indicate to doctors, nurses, psychologists, and physiotherapists the significance and importance of the problem, which requires specialised and holistic care.

Supplementary data are given on the following: (1) the full taxonomic list of invertebrates (n = 12 916) classified into food guilds and functional groups, which were sampled in 34 oilseed rape fields in SW Poland in spring 2015; (2) concentrations of 12 chemical elements measured in invertebrates; (3) the relationships between abundance and percentage (%) in the community of major invertebrate groups, and habitat variables; (4) the statistical tests comparing the concentrations of chemical elements between the different groupings of organisms; (5) the relationships between the elemental traits of oilseed rape plant samples and major functional invertebrate groupings or main taxonomic insect groups, and the habitat variables of oilseed rape fields. A finales del siglo XX, en América Latina, Gabriel García Márquez fundó la Fundación de Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI). Gracias a esta, unos años después, se logró el crecimiento de los medios, especialmente de las revistas que publican crónicas periodísticas. Uno de los exponentes más importantes de esta vertiente es la publicación peruana Etiqueta Negra. En el presente artículo se detalla la situación de la crónica contemporánea en América Latina y un análisis crítico de Etiqueta Negra.

Despite widespread awareness and use of scientifically proven life-prolonging medical and device-based therapies over the last two decades, heart failure remains a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditure in the United States. Mechanical circulatory support with a continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD), either as a bridge to heart transplantation or as destination therapy, is an increasingly used treatment modality for patients with advanced heart failure syndromes that worsen despite their receiving standard therapies. CF-LVAD support creates unique hemodynamic alterations that must be understood to provide appropriate care for these patients before and after implantation. Echocardiography is essential in the evaluation of patients who are being considered for or are mechanically supported by CF-LVADs. Here we provide a focused clinical review on the use of echocardiography in two main aspects of the evaluation of these patients: (a) optimal patient selection for CF-LVAD support and (b) follow-up assessment of optimal pump function.

Głównym celem artykułu jest dokonanie krytycznego przeglądu wykorzystania map dawnych w polskich badaniach geograficzno-historycznych. Miejsce dawnej mapy w warsztacie geograficzno-historycznym wynika z przedmiotu badań, który stawia w swoim centrum relacje przestrzenne zjawisk historycznych. Metodyka pracy z dawnymi kartografikami warunkowana jest z kolei relacją czasu powstania mapy do czasu występowania badanego zjawiska oraz związkiem tematycznym między treścią mapy a przedmiotem badań. Stąd odmienne podejście przy wykorzystaniu map dawnych prezentują historycy, geografowie, kartografowie oraz przedstawiciele innych dyscyplin. W artykule omówione zostały najważniejsze sposoby wykorzystania dawnej kartografii w geografii historycznej. Na pierwszym miejscu znalazła się rola dawnych map jako podkładu do prezentacji zjawisk historycznych oraz jako podstawa dla rekonstrukcji położenia, przebiegu, zasięgu oraz kształtów kartowanych zjawisk historycznych. Dawne mapy wzbogacają też charakterystykę jakościową obiektów rejestrowaną przez źródła pisane. Artykuł akcentuje rolę metody retrogresywnej, a także odmienny sposób wykorzystania map dawnych w badaniach nad dziejami krajobrazu naturalnego (m.in. hydrografia i roślinność), kulturowego (m.in. osadnictwo, obiekty gospodarcze, obiekty kultu religijnego, drogi) oraz historyczno-politycznego (granice administracji świeckiej i wyznaniowej). W podsumowaniu podkreślono słabe wykorzystanie warstwy informacyjnej, jaką niosą mapy dawne, odmienną rolę kartografii z okresu przedpomiarowego i pomiarowego oraz zależność metody retrogresywnej od trwałości i dynamiki elementów krajobrazu, który jest przedmiotem rekonstrukcji w oparciu o dawną kartografię.
