1. Current Affairs: A Security Measurement Study of CCS EV Charging Deployments

Abstract

Since its introduction in 2012, the Combined Charging System (CCS) has emerged as the leading technology for EV fast charging in Europe, North America and parts of Asia. The charging communication of CCS is defined by the ISO 15118 standards, which have been improved over the years. Most notably, in 2014, important security features such as Transport Layer Security (TLS) and usability enhancements such as Plug and Charge were introduced. In this paper, we conduct the first measurement study of publicly deployed CCS DC charging stations to capture the state of deployment for different protocol versions and to better understand the attack surface of the EV charging infrastructure. In our evaluation, we examine 325 chargers manufactured between April 2013 and June 2023, and installed as late as May 2024 by 26 manufacturers across 4 European countries. We find that only 12% of the charging stations we analyzed implement TLS at all, leaving all others vulnerable to attacks that have already been demonstrated many years ago. We observe an increasing trend in support for ISO 15118-2 over the years, reaching 70% of chargers manufactured in 2023. We further notice that most chargers use a decade-old firmware for their HomePlug modems, which could contain vulnerabilities that have been patched since. Finally, we discuss design flaws with the Public Key Infrastructure system used in EV charging, and propose changes to improve the adoption and availability of TLS.

2. Assault and Battery: Evaluating the Security of Power Conversion Systems Against Electromagnetic Injection Attacks

Abstract

Many modern devices, including critical infrastructures, depend on the reliable operation of electrical power conversion systems. The small size and versatility of switched-mode power converters has resulted in their widespread adoption. Whereas transformer-based systems passively convert voltage, switched-mode converters feature an actively regulated feedback loop, which relies on accurate sensor measurements. Previous academic work has shown that many types of sensors are vulnerable to Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) attacks, and it has been postulated that power converters, too, are affected. In this paper, we present the first detailed study on switched-mode power converters by targeting their voltage and current sensors through IEMI attacks. We present a theoretical framework for evaluating IEMI attacks against feedback-based power supplies in the general case. We experimentally validate our theoretical predictions by analyzing multiple AC-DC and DC-DC converters, automotive grade current sensors, and dedicated battery chargers, and demonstrate the systematic vulnerability of all examined categories under real-world conditions. Finally, we demonstrate that sensor attacks on power converters can cause permanent damage to Li-Ion batteries during the charging process.

3. Health Awareness, Motor Performance and Physical Activity of Female University Students

Abstract

Study aim: To assess body composition, health awareness and cardiorespiratory fitness in female university students differing in volume of obligatory physical activity classes. Material and methods: 109 female students of the University of West Hungary volunteered to participate in the study. The subjects were divided into two groups according to frequency and volume of obligatory physical activity: students of recreation and health education programmes (RHE; n = 27) and of social pedagogy, tourism and catering, and teacher training programmes (STT; n = 82). Basic somatic characteristics were measured, body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance, cardiorespiratory fitness was evaluated using the Rockport Fitness Walking Test and health behaviour was assessed by questionnaire method. Student's t-test for independent samples, the U Mann Whitney test or chi-square test were used in data analysis. Results: RHE students had higher values of percentage muscle mass (p less than 0.05) and of cardiorespiratory performance (p less than 0.001), they also declared significantly more frequently (p less than 0.001) practicing leisure physical activity as compared with the STT group. However, in both groups the symptoms of unhealthy behaviour were observed. Conclusions: Although beneficial effects of augmented physical activity on body composition, cardiorespiratory performance and attitudes towards taking up leisure-time activity was noted, attention should be paid to symptoms of unhealthy behaviour observed in female students. This support the need for including obligatory physical education classes in university curriculum and the importance of education and promotion of healthy behaviour among the students. 5. Air pollution modelling using a graphics processing unit with CUDA

Abstract

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a powerful tool for parallel computing. In the past years the performance and capabilities of GPUs have increased, and the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) - a parallel computing architecture - has been developed by NVIDIA to utilize this performance in general purpose computations. Here we show for the first time a possible application of GPU for environmental studies serving as a basement for decision making strategies. A stochastic Lagrangian particle model has been developed on CUDA to estimate the transport and the transformation of the radionuclides from a single point source during an accidental release. Our results show that parallel implementation achieves typical acceleration values in the order of 80-120 times compared to CPU using a single-threaded implementation on a 2.33 GHz desktop computer. Only very small differences have been found between the results obtained from GPU and CPU simulations, which are comparable with the effect of stochastic transport phenomena in atmosphere. The relatively high speedup with no additional costs to maintain this parallel architecture could result in a wide usage of GPU for diversified environmental applications in the near future., Comment: 5 figures

7. Transport Effects in the Evolution of the Global Solar Magnetic Field

Abstract

The axisymmetric component of the large-scale solar magnetic fields has a pronounced poleward branch at higher latitudes. In order to clarify the origin of this branch we construct an axisymmetric model of the passive transport of the mean poloidal magnetic field in the convective zone, including meridional circulation, anisotropic diffusivity, turbulent pumping and density pumping. For realistic values of the transport coefficients we find that diffusivity is prevalent, and the latitudinal distribution of the field at the surface simply reflects the conditions at the bottom of the convective zone. Pumping effects concentrate the field to the bottom of the convective zone; a significant part of this pumping occurs in a shallow subsurface layer, normally not resolved in dynamo models. The phase delay of the surface poloidal field relative to the bottom poloidal field is found to be small. These results support the double dynamo wave models, may be compatible with some form of a mixed transport scenario, and exclude the passive transport theory for the origin of the polar branch., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures; Solar Physics, in press

23. The new way of triathlon preparation in youth athletes.

Abstract

The aim of our research was to find a way, based on international experience, to examine the training method that can be successfully used in youth age groups, and as a consequence, to increase the effectiveness of the sport of triathlon. In Hungary, the methods of preparing the younger age group (10-18 y) are not yet uniform. Hungarian triathletes do not dominate at the international level, neither in the junior age groups nor in the elite field. Two basic methods "fight" each other in Hungary, the so-called "threshold" training (training at the anaerobic threshold), the effectiveness of which has been proven by numerous studies in various sports. The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of "Polarized" (Pol) and "Threshold" (TR) training in youth ages (15-18y). Male youth triathlete subjects taking part in systematic training (n=10, n(Pol)=5; n(TR)=5) were studied. Performance (time), physiological data from spiroergometry (vita maxima) tests and anthropometric features were measured in this longitudinal study (3 years). Performance improvement, relative oxygen uptake (rVO2max) and aerobic time significantly increased (p<0.05) in Pol group, while differences of their anthropometric features did not change significantly during the research. No significant changes were found in any parameters of TR group. There were no significant differences of anthropometric and cardiovascular (Heart Rate) characteristics between the two groups in any assessment. The differences of rVO2max and relative aerobic capacity at the anaerobic threshold were significant in the Pol group (p<0.05) at the second and third measurements. Performance improvement and time in aerobic zone increased more in the Pol group than in the TR group (p<0.05). Abstract

Autoantibodies recognizing 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) are associated with statin exposure, the HLA allele DRB1*11:01, and necrotizing muscle biopsies in adult myositis patients. The aim of this study was to characterize the features of juvenile anti‐HMGCR‐positive myositis patients. The sera of 440 juvenile myositis patients were screened for anti‐HMGCR autoantibodies. Demographic and clinical features, responses to therapy, and HLA alleles were assessed. The features of anti‐HMGCR‐positive patients were compared to those of previously described adult patients with this autoantibody and to children with other myositis‐specific autoantibodies (MSAs). Five of 440 patients (1.1%) were anti‐HMGCR‐positive; none had taken statin medications. Three patients had rashes characteristic of juvenile dermatomyositis and 2 patients had immune‐mediated necrotizing myopathies. The median highest creatine kinase (CK) level of anti‐HMGCR‐positive subjects was 17,000 IU/liter. All patients had severe proximal muscle weakness, distal weakness, muscle atrophy, joint contractures, and arthralgias, which were all more prevalent in HMGCR‐positive subjects compared to MSA‐negative patients or those with other MSAs. Anti‐HMGCR‐positive patients had only partial responses to multiple immunosuppressive medications, and their disease often took a chronic course. The DRB1*07:01 allele was present in all 5 patients, compared to 26.25% of healthy controls (corrected P= 0.01); none of the 5 juvenile patients had DRB1*11:01. Compared to children with other MSAs, muscle disease appears to be more severe in those with anti‐HMGCR autoantibodies. Like adults, children with anti‐HMGCR autoantibodies have severe weakness and high CK levels. In contrast to adults, in anti‐HMGCR‐positive children, there is a strong association with HLA–DRB1*07:01.

Abstract

Abstract: Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a widespread neuropeptide with diverse effects in the nervous system and peripheral organs. One of the most well-studied effects of PACAP is its cytoprotective action, against different harmful stimuli in a wide variety of cells and tissues. PACAP occurs in the urinary system, from the kidney to the lower urinary tract. The present review focuses on the nephroprotective effects of PACAP and summarizes data obtained regarding the protective effects of PACAP in different models of kidney pathologies. In vitro data show that PACAP protects tubular cells against oxidative stress, myeloma light chain, cisplatin, cyclosporine-A and hypoxia. In vivo data provide evidence for its protective effects in ischemia/reperfusion, cisplatin, cyclosporine-A, myeloma kidney injury, diabetic nephropathy and gentamicin-induced kidney damage. Results accumulated on the renoprotective effects of PACAP suggest that PACAP is an emerging candidate for treatment of human kidney pathologies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is a neuropeptide with well-known cytoprotective effects. We have reported earlier that PACAP decreases mortality and the degree of tubular atrophy in a rat model of renal ischemia/reperfusion injury. Recently, we have shown that kidney cultures isolated from PACAP deficient mice show increased susceptibility to renal oxidative stress. Based on these previous studies, we raised the question whether PACAP deficient mice display increased sensitivity to in vivo kidney ischemia/reperfusion. PACAP−/− mice underwent 45 or 60min of renal ischemia followed by 2weeks reperfusion. Kidneys were processed for histological analysis. Sections stained with PAS–haematoxylin were graded for the following parameters: degree of tubular dilation, Bowmann’s capsule dilation, lymphocyte and macrophage infiltration, thyroidization and the disappearance of the PAS-positive glycocalyx from under the brush border. In other sets of experiments, tissue cytokine expression and the level of the endogenous antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) were also determined after 60min ischemia/reperfusion. Our results show that while intact kidneys were not different between wild-type and PACAP deficient mice, marked differences were observed in the histological structures in groups that underwent ischemia/reperfusion. PACAP deficient mice had a worse histological outcome, with significantly higher histological scores for all tested parameters. Cytokine expression was also markedly different between wild-type and PACAP deficient mice. In addition, the level of SOD was significantly lower in PACAP−/− animals after ischemia/reperfusion. In conclusion, the lack of endogenous PACAP leads to higher susceptibility to in vivo renal ischemia/reperfusion, suggesting that PACAP has an endogenous renoprotective effect. Abstract

Background: Infiltration, accumulation, and degranulation of eosinophils in the lung are hallmarks of active allergic asthma. The pulmonary response to inhaled allergen triggers the secretion of eosinophil chemoattractants and antiapoptotic cytokines, including GM-CSF, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, and eotaxin, among others. We recently showed that in vitro Pin1 regulated eosinophil production of and response to GM-CSF. Objective: We sought to determine the effect of Pin1 inhibition on pulmonary eosinophilia after allergen challenge. Methods: The Pin1 inhibitor juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) was administered to allergen-sensitized and allergen-challenged Brown Norway rats. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lungs were assessed for inflammation, cytokine expression, and Pin1 activity. Results: Juglone-treated rats showed a dramatic reduction (approximately 75%) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and pulmonary eosinophilia but no change in lymphocyte, monocyte/macrophage, or neutrophil numbers. GM-CSF and IL-5 expression were also significantly reduced, whereas Pin1-independent cytokines, such as eotaxin or IL-4, as well as housekeeping mRNAs and proteins, including actin, were unaffected by juglone. The eosinophils present in the lung in juglone-treated rats showed significantly greater apoptosis. Conclusion: These data suggest that in vivo Pin1 blockade attenuates GM-CSF and IL-5 production and can selectively reduce eosinophilic allergic inflammation. Clinical implications: Eosinophils can be selectively reduced by Pin1 blockade, despite allergen challenge. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

38. Efficacy and Safety of Oral Oseltamivir for Influenza Prophylaxis in Transplant Recipients

Abstract

Background Haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are at high risk for severe influenza and its complications, and may not be adequately protected by vaccination.Methods Liver, kidney, or liver–kidney transplant or allogeneic HSCT recipients aged =1 year were randomized to oseltamivir (75 mg once daily for those =13 years or weight-based dosing for children 1–12 years) or placebo for 12 weeks during periods of local influenza circulation. Patients were assessed for influenza infection via daily diary, every-other-week culture and PCR, and baseline and end-of-treatment serology.Results A total of 477 subjects were enrolled (239 oseltamivir and 238 placebo); most were adults (96%) and SOT recipients (81%). In the intent-to-treat population, the frequency of laboratory-confirmed clinical influenza (culture positive and/or >4-fold increase in haemagglutinin antibody inhibition [primary end point]) was similar in the oseltamivir and placebo groups (2.1% [5/237] and 2.9% [7/238]). Incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza was significantly reduced in the oseltamivir group versus placebo when determined by reverse transcriptase-PCR (1.7% [4/237] versus 8.4% [20/238]; 95% CI 2.8, 11.1) or viral culture (<1% [1/237] versus 3.8% [9/238]; 95% CI 0.7, 6.6), giving protective efficacies of 79.9 and 88.8%, respectively. Serious adverse events (oseltamivir 8% and placebo 10%) and adverse events (oseltamivir 55% and placebo 58%) were reported in both arms with a similar frequency. One illness due to oseltamivir-resistant A/H1N1 virus was detected in each group.Conclusions Oseltamivir prophylaxis is generally well-tolerated and may reduce culture- or PCR-confirmed influenza incidence in transplant recipients.

41. Measurement of the Osmotic Properties of Thin Polymer Films and Biological Tissue Samples

Abstract

A new type of micro-osmometer is described in which water absorption of small tissue samples is measured by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The swelling of the sample deposited on the surface of a quartz crystal is determined by monitoring the change in resonance frequency of the quartz sensor as a function of the vapor pressure in the surrounding environment. The measurement principle is verified by studying the water uptake of poly(vinyl alcohol) films. Reasonable agreement is found between the results obtained by the QCM-based osmometer and previous osmotic pressure measurements made on a similar poly(vinyl alcohol) sample. The feasibility of the new method is demonstrated by measuring the osmotic response of tissue-engineered cartilage samples. It is found that the osmotic pressure of cartilage substantially increases with culture time. The present result is consistent with cartilage models, suggesting that the proteoglycan content governs the compressive resistance of the tissue.

42. The Histologic Type and Stage Distribution of Ovarian Carcinomas of Surface Epithelial Origin

Abstract

Advances over the past decade suggest a need to reassess the distribution of ovarian surface epithelial tumors. A series of 220 consecutive invasive ovarian carcinomas, including carcinosarcomas and peritoneal carcinomas, was reviewed. Notable findings include 7 of tumors were carcinosarcomas; 22 of cases of peritoneal serous carcinomatosis were of peritoneal origin; <3 of cases were mucinous carcinomas; and only one malignant Brenner tumor (0.5) and no pure transitional cell carcinomas were identified. If peritoneal carcinomas, carcinosarcomas, and mixed carcinomas with a serous component are combined with serous carcinomas, this group accounts for 78 of all cases and 87 of advanced stage cases, suggesting a greater uniformity to epithelial ovarian cancer than previously appreciated.

46. Multifactorial Origin of Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, Recurrent Hematuria, and Episodic Pain in a Service Member with Sickle Cell Trait

Abstract

Individuals with Sickle Cell Trait (SCT), generally considered a benign carrier state of hemoglobin S (HbAS), are thought to be at risk for exertional rhabdomyolysis and hematuria, conditions that can also be caused by various other acquired and inherited factors. We report an SCT positive service member with an exertional rhabdomyolysis event, recurrent hematuria with transient proteinuria, and episodic burning pain in the lower extremities. Clinical and genetic studies revealed the multifactorial nature of his complex phenotype. The service member was taking prescription medications known to be associated with exertional rhabdomyolysis. He carried a pathogenic mutation, NPHS2 p.V260E, reported in nephropathy and a new variant p.R838Q in SCN11A, a gene involved in familial episodic pain syndrome. Results suggest that drug-to-drug interactions coupled with the stress of exercise, coinheritance of HbAS and NPHS2 p.V260E, and p. R838Q in SCN11A contributed to exertional rhabdomyolysis, recurrent hematuria with proteinuria, and episodic pain, respectively. This case underscores the importance of comprehensive clinical and genetic evaluations to identify underlying causes of health complications reported in SCT individuals.
