The use of nanoparticles in the industry carries the risk of their release into the environment. Based on the presumption that the primary graphene oxide (GO) toxicity mechanism is reactive oxygen species production in the cell, the question arises as to whether well-known antioxidants can protect the cell or significantly reduce the effects of GO. This study focused on the possible remedial effect of vitamin C in Acheta domesticus intoxicated with GO for whole lives. The reproduction potential was measured at the level of Vitellogenin (Vg) gene expression, Vg protein expression, hatching success, and share of nutrition in the developing egg. There was no simple relationship between the Vg gene's expression and the Vg protein content. Despite fewer eggs laid in the vitamin C groups, hatching success was high, and egg composition did not differ significantly. The exceptions were GO20 and GO20 + Vit. C groups, with a shift in the lipid content in the egg. Most likely, ascorbic acid impacts the level of Vg gene expression but does not affect the production of Vg protein or the quality of eggs laid. Low GO concentration in food did not cause adverse effects, but the relationship between GO toxicity and its concentration should be investigated more thoroughly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) is a virus infecting carp with disease symptoms of gill necrosis, fish discoloration, sunken eyes, and mortality reaching 90%. Several research groups have examined how to potentially abate the consequences of viral activity. Recently we showed that acyclovir inhibits CyHV-3 replication in vitro and in the present study we examined the anti-CyHV-3 activity of the tricyclic derivative of acyclovir 6-(4-MeOPh)-TACV (T-ACV), a fluorescent molecule known for higher lipophilicity than acyclovir, and therefore potentially better candidate for application in vivo.

Genes related to iron metabolism play an important role in inflammatory response. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of ferritin, transferrin receptors 1a and 1b, and transferrin genes in the response to blood parasite infection in common carp (Cyprinuscarpio L.).

Simple Summary: Roundup is a widely used herbicide. Its active component, glyphosate, is described as an endocrine disrupter. The effect of this glyphosate-containing herbicide on the reproductive parameters of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) was investigated in this study. The entire pituitary glands and ovarian fragments of crucian carp were incubated in vitro in the medium containing two different concentrations of Roundup (1 and 10 ng/mL). We assessed the final oocyte maturation and ovulation, structural changes in follicles, levels of 17,20β-progesterone, and luteinizing hormone. The mRNA levels of zona radiata (chorion) genes, kisspeptin, and its receptor as well as luteinizing hormone and estrogen receptors were also determined. Obtained results indicate that Roundup may adversely affect oocyte maturation and the quality of crucian carp eggs, suggesting that exposure to this herbicide can lead to reproductive disorders in fish. Roundup, the most popular herbicide in global agriculture, is regarded as an endocrine disruptor causing alterations of important hormones at the hypothalamic−pituitary−gonadal axis as well as impairment of gametogenesis. The whole pituitary glands of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) were incubated for 3 h in the medium containing Roundup (0-control, 1 and 10 ng/mL). The level of luteinizing hormone (LH), and mRNA transcript abundance of kisspeptin (kiss-1) and its receptor (gpr54), were determined. The isolated ovarian fragments were incubated for 24 h in the presence of Roundup and the following effects on reproductive parameters were determined: the final oocyte maturation and ovulation, structural changes in follicles, secretion of 17,20β-progesterone (17,20β-P) as well as mRNA transcript abundance of the luteinizing hormone receptor (lhr), estrogen receptors (erα, erβ1, erβ2), and zona radiata (chorion) proteins (zp2 and zp3). Roundup inhibited final oocyte maturation and decreased the percentage of ovulated eggs, and furthermore, caused structural changes in the ovarian follicular components. There were no significant changes in the measured hormone levels and analyzed genes mRNA transcript abundance. Summing up, obtained results indicate that Roundup may adversely affect oocyte maturation and the quality of eggs, suggesting that exposure to this herbicide can lead to reproductive disorders in fish. Acyclovir inhibits CyHV-3 replication in a dose-dependent manner. The viral load in the CyHV-3-infected, ACV-treated group was divided by the viral load in CyHV-3-infected control and the outcomes were expressed as a percent of the control. Contrary to Troszok et al., (2018) that suggested 66.67 µM as a maximal safe concentration of ACV, Quijano Cardé et al.
