Abstract: Phi meson production is studied by the NA49 Collaboration in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV beam energy. The data are compared with measurements at lower and higher energies and to microscopic and thermal models. Abstract: The latest NA49 results on event-by-event transverse momentum fluctuations are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). Two different methods are applied: evaluating the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and studying two-particle transverse momentum correlations. The obtained results are compared to predictions of the UrQMD model. The results on the energy dependence are compared to the NA49 data on the system size dependence. 4. Fluctuation of the Groundwater Level, and Its Consequences in the Soil--Parent Material--Groundwater System of a Sodic Grassland.

Abstract: Our data verified the relationship between meteorological factors and the fluctuation of the groundwater level. The rate of evaporation dominantly affected the rise and depth of the groundwater level. It is characteristic for the study site that there is an inverse relationship between the elevation of the groundwater observation wells and the depth of groundwater, and the difference between the levels of groundwater in the separate wells reflected the differences in the elevation between the wells. Our observations refuted our previous assumptions, as in the wells not only the concentration of salts changed but also the chemical type of the water. This can be attributed with great probability to the lateral flow of the groundwater, which is caused by the vertical fluctuation, but can be caused by other geological factors as well. We reached the conclusion that the vertical and sometimes lateral movement of the groundwater affects the development of soils in a given area. It means that the reason behind the mosaic-like appearance of the soil cover of a given area can be searched in the local differences of the chemical composition of the groundwater, which is a major factor of the spatial variability of the salt accumulation of soils. The observations and analytical results point to that the soils of the study site have developed under the effect of fluctuating groundwater and the elevation is a dominant factor of the spatial variability of the soil salt accumulation. The level of groundwater, the flow of groundwater and its composition show relationship with the surface elevation, and their effect is modified by the geological stratification, which results in a variable appearance of soil salt accumulation and native vegetation. Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of $\pi^{\pm}, p, pbar, K^{\pm}$ in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$ GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors $R_{AA}$ and $R_{CP}$ were extracted and are compared to RHIC results at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. The modification factor $R_{AA}$ shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor $R_{CP}$, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the $\pi^{\pm}$ channel. The extracted $R_{CP}$ values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for $\pi^{\pm}$ above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

The revision takes into account limitations due to the new LHC schedule as well as final results concerning the physics performance with secondary ion beams. It is proposed to take data with primary Ar and Xe beams in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and to test and use for physics a secondary B beam from primary Pb beam fragmentation in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Abstract: This document presents the proposal for secondary ion beams and the updated data taking schedule of the NA61 Collaboration. The modification of the original NA61 plans is necessary in order to reach compatibility between the current I-LHC and NA61 schedules. It assumes delivery of primary proton beam in 2009-2012 and of primary lead beam in 2011-2013. The primary lead beam will be fragmented into a secondary beam of lighter ions. The modified H2 beam line will serve as a fragment separator to produce the light ion species for NA61 data taking. The expected physics performance of the NA61 experiment with secondary ion beams will be sufficient to reach the primary NA61 physics goals.

Abstract: Results on Λ, Λ̄, and Ξ- production in centrality selected Pb+Pb reactions at 40A and 158A GeV and in near-central C+C and Si+Si reactions at 158A GeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities in dependence of the system size are discussed. Comparisons to transport models (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron string dynamics) and to the core-corona approach are performed. Although Λ and Λ̄ production can be described by transport models reasonably well, these models do not agree with the Ξ- measurements. However, the core-corona picture fits very well the system-size dependence of Λ and Ξ-, whereas it agrees less well with the Λ̄ data. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We present measurements of the energy dependence of event-by-event fluctuations in the K/π and (p+p̄)/π multiplicity ratios in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, sNN, between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/π ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+p̄)/π ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/π ratio fluctuations. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The NA49 experiment has collected comprehensive data on particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions over the whole SPS beam energies range, the critical energy domain where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase is expected to occur. The latest results from Pb+Pb collisions between 20$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV on baryon stopping and light nuclei production as well as those for strange hyperons are presented. The measured data on $p$, $\bar{p}$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Xi^-$ and $\bar{\Xi}^+$ production were used to evaluate the rapidity distributions of net-baryons at SPS energies and to compare with the results from the AGS and the RHIC for central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions. The dependence of the yield ratios and the inverse slope parameter of the $m_t$ spectra on the collision energy and centrality, and the mass number of the produced nuclei $^3He$, $t$, $d$ and $\bar{d}$ are discussed within coalescence and statistical approaches. Analysis of the total multiplicity exhibits remarkable agreement between the measured yield for $^3He$ and those predicted by the statistical hadronization model. In addition, new results on $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ as well as $\Xi^-$ production in minimum bias Pb+Pb reactions at 40$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV and central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions are presented. Abstract: The latest NA49 results on event-by-event transverse momentum fluctuations are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). Two different methods are applied: evaluating the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and studying two-particle transverse momentum correlations. The obtained results are compared to predictions of the UrQMD model. The results on the energy dependence are compared to the NA49 data on the system size dependence. Abstract: The energy dependence of multiplicity fluctuations was studied for the most central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The multiplicity distribution for negatively and positively charged hadrons is significantly narrower than Poisson one for all energies. No significant structure in energy dependence of the scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is observed. The measured scaled variance is lower than the one predicted by the grand-canonical formulation of the hadron-resonance gas model. The results for scaled variance are in approximate agreement with the string-hadronic model UrQMD.

Abstract: Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function (BF) method in A+A collisions from 20A to 158A GeV are presented in two different rapidity intervals: In the midrapidity region we observe a decrease of the width of the BF distribution with increasing centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward rapidity region. Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show that the narrowing of the BF expressed by the normalized width parameter W increases with energy toward the highest CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energies. Finally we compare our experimental data points with the predictions of several models. The hadronic string models Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator (HIJING) do not reproduce the observed narrowing of the BF. However, A MultiPhase Transport medel (AMPT), which contains a quark-parton transport phase before hadronization, can reproduce the narrowing of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of the BF analysis to the time of hadronization. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The transverse mass $m_{t}$ distributions for antiprotons are measured at midrapidity for minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV and for central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, and 80A GeV beam energies in the fixed target experiment NA49 at the CERN SPS. The rapidity density $dn/dy$, inverse slope parameter $T$, and mean transverse mass left angle $\left \langle {m}_{t} \right \rangle$ derived from the $m_{t}$ distributions are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality and compared to the relevant data on proton production. The shapes of the $m_{t}$ distributions of $\bar{p}$ and $p$ are very similar. The ratios of the particle yields, $\bar{p}/p$ and $\Lambda/p\bar{p}$, are also analyzed. The $\bar{p}/p$ ratio exhibits an increase with decreasing centrality and a steep rise with increasing beam energy. The $\Lambda/\bar{p}$ ratio increases beyond unity with decreasing beam energy.

Abstract: This article is devoted to results on pion-pion -Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Rapidity as well as transverse momentum dependences of the correlation lengths will be shown for collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. Only a weak energy dependence of the radii is observed at SPS energies. The kt-dependence of the correlation lengths as well as the single particle mt-spectra will be compared to model calculations. The rapidity dependence is analysed in a range of 2.5 units of rapidity starting at the center of mass rapidity at each beam energy. Abstract: Emission of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $\phi$, and $\Lambda$ was measured in near-central C + C and Si + Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for $p + p$, S + S, and Pb + Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as the onset of the formation of coherent systems of increasing size. copy 2005 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The hadronic final state of central Pb+Pb collisions at 20, 30, 40, 80, and 158 AGeV has been measured by the CERN NA49 collaboration. The mean transverse mass of pions and kaons at midrapidity stays nearly constant in this energy range, whereas at lower energies, at the AGS, a steep increase with beam energy was measured. Compared to p+p collisions as well as to model calculations, anomalies in the energy dependence of pion and kaon production at lower SPS energies are observed. Abstract: The most recent data of NA49 on hadron production in nuclear collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. Anomalies in the energy dependence of pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions are observed. They suggest that the onset of deconfinement is located at about 30 AGeV. Large multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations are measured for collisions of intermediate mass systems at 158 AGeV. Abstract: Results are presented on event-by-event fluctuations in transverse momentum of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV. Three different characteristics are discussed: the average transverse momentum of the event, the ΦpT fluctuation measure, and two-particle transverse momentum correlations. In the kinematic region explored, the dynamical fluctuations are found to be small. However, a significant system size dependence of ΦpT is observed, with the largest value measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The data are compared with predictions of several models.

Abstract: The transverse mass [Formula Presented] distributions for deuterons and protons are measured in [Formula Presented] reactions near midrapidity and in the range [Formula Presented] for minimum bias collisions at [Formula Presented] and for central collisions at 40 and [Formula Presented] beam energies. The rapidity density [Formula Presented], inverse slope parameter [Formula Presented] and mean transverse mass [Formula Presented] derived from [Formula Presented] distributions as well as the coalescence parameter [Formula Presented] are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality. The deuteron [Formula Presented] spectra are significantly harder than those of protons, especially in central collisions. The coalescence factor [Formula Presented] shows three systematic trends. First, it decreases strongly with increasing centrality reflecting an enlargement of the deuteron coalescence volume in central [Formula Presented] collisions. Second, it increases with [Formula Presented]. Finally, [Formula Presented] shows an increase with decreasing incident beam energy even within the SPS energy range. The results are discussed and compared to the predictions of models that include the collective expansion of the source created in [Formula Presented] collisions. © 2004 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Results are presented on event-by-event electric charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. The observed fluctuations are close to those expected for a gas of pions correlated by global charge conservation only. These fluctuations are considerably larger than those calculated for an ideal gas of deconfined quarks and gluons. The present measurements do not necessarily exclude reduced fluctuations from a quark-gluon plasma because these might be masked by contributions from resonance decays.

Abstract: Emission of $\pi{\pm}$, $K{\pm}$, $\phi$ and $\Lambda$ was measured in near-central C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158 AGeV beam energy. Together with earlier data for p+p, S+S and Pb+Pb, the system-size dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions is obtained. Its fast rise and the saturation observed at about 60 participating nucleons can be understood as onset of the formation of coherent partonic subsystems of increasing size.

Abstract: The measurement of production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was taken in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. For all the three beam energies the transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are studied. By integrating the rapidity spectra with extrapolations into unmeasured regions, total multiplicities were obtained. The ratio of the three energies at midrapidity and in full phase space was also studied.

Abstract: Results of resonance searches in the [Formula presented], [Formula presented], [Formula presented], and [Formula presented] invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at [Formula presented] are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow [Formula presented] baryon resonance with mass of [Formula presented] and width below the detector resolution of about [Formula presented]. The significance is estimated to be above [Formula presented]. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic [Formula presented] baryon with [Formula presented], [Formula presented], and a quark content of ([Formula presented]). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the [Formula presented] spectrum which is a candidate for the [Formula presented] member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of ([Formula presented]). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass. © 2004 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: New results from the energy scan programme of NA49, in particular kaon production at 30 A GeV and φ production at 40 and 80 A GeV are presented. The K+/π+ ratio shows a pronounced maximum at 30 A GeV; the kaon slope parameters are constant at SPS energies. Both findings support the scenario of a phase transition at about 30 A GeV beam energy. The φ/π ratio increases smoothly with beam energy, showing an energy dependence similar to K-/π- . The measured particle yields can be reproduced by a hadron gas model, with chemical freeze-out parameters on a smooth curve in the T-μB plane. The transverse spectra can be understood as resulting from a rapidly expanding, locally equilibrated source. No evidence for an earlier kinetic decoupling of heavy hyperons is found.

Abstract: Production of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons was measured in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are given for all three energies. The $\Lambda / \pi$ ratio at midrapidity and in full phase space shows a pronounced maximum between the highest BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron and 40A GeV CERN Super Proton Synchrotron energies, whereas the $\Lambda / \pi$ ratio exhibits a monotonic increase. Abstract: In the vicinity of the QCD phase transition, critical fluctuations have been predicted to lead to non-statistical fluctuations of particle ratios, depending on the nature of the phase transition. Recent results of the NA49 energy scan program show a sharp maximum of the ratio of K+ to Pi+ yields in central Pb+Pb collisions at beam energies of 20-30 AGeV. This observation has been interpreted as an indication of a phase transition at low SPS energies. Abstract: A non-monotonic energy dependence of the $K^{+} / \pi^{+}$ ratio with a sharp maximum close to 30 A$\cdot$GeV is observed in central Pb+Pb collisions. Within a statistical model of the early stage, this is interpreted as a sign of the phase transition to a QGP, which causes a sharp change in the energy dependence of the strangeness to entropy ratio. This observation naturally motivates us to study the production of multistrange hyperons ($\Xi$, $\Omega$) as a function of the beam energy. Furthermore it was suggested that the kinematic freeze-out of $\Omega$ takes place directly at QGP hadronization. If this is indeed the case, the transverse momentum spectra of the $\Omega$ directly reflect the transverse expansion velocity of a hadronizing QGP. In this report we show preliminary NA49 results on $\Omega^{-}$ and $\bar{\Omega}^{+}$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV and compare them to measurements of $\Xi^{-}$ and $\bar{\Xi}^{+}$ production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 30, 40, 80 and 158 A$\cdot$GeV., Comment: Presented at 25th International School of Nuclear Physics, Erice, Italy, to be published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics, 3 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Results of resonance searches in the $\Xi^{-} \pi^{-}, \Xi^{-} \pi^{+}, \bar{Xi}^{+} \pi-$ and $\bar{Xi}^{+} \pi^{+}$ invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=17.2$ GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow $\Xi^{-} \pi^{-}$ baryon resonance with mass of 1.862+/-0.002 GeV/c^2 and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c^2. The significance is estimated to be 4.0 sigma. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic $\Xi$$\_3$$\_/$$\_2$$^-$$^-$ baryon with S = -2, I = 3/2 and a quark content of $(d s d s \bar{u})$. At the same mass a peak is observed in the $\Xi^{-} \pi^{+}$ spectrum which is a candidate for the $\Xi$$^0$$\_3$$\_/$$\_2$ member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of $(d s u s \bar{d})$. The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass.

Abstract: Directed and elliptic flow measurements for charged pions and protons are reported as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity, and centrality for 40 and 158 AGeV Pb + Pb collisions as recorded by the NA49 detector. Both the standard method of correlating particles with an event plane, and the cumulant method of studying multiparticle correlations are used. In the standard method the directed flow is corrected for conservation of momentum. In the cumulant method elliptic flow is reconstructed from genuine 4, 6, and 8-particle correlations, showing the first unequivocal evidence for collective motion in A+A collisions at SPS energies.
