Search

CASA, the Common Astronomy Software Applications, is the primary data processing software for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and is frequently used also for other radio telescopes. The CASA software can handle data from single-dish, aperture-synthesis, and Very Long Baseline Interferometery (VLBI) telescopes. One of its core functionalities is to support the calibration and imaging pipelines for ALMA, VLA, VLA Sky Survey (VLASS), and the Nobeyama 45m telescope. This paper presents a high-level overview of the basic structure of the CASA software, as well as procedures for calibrating and imaging astronomical radio data in CASA. CASA is being developed by an international consortium of scientists and software engineers based at the National Radio Astronomical Observatory (NRAO), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), and the Joint Institute for VLBI European Research Infrastructure Consortium (JIV-ERIC), under the guidance of NRAO., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASP (20 pages, 4 figures). New functionality to process Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data has been implemented in the CASA package. This includes two new tasks to handle fringe fitting and VLBI-specific amplitude calibration steps. Existing tasks have been adjusted to handle VLBI visibility data and calibration meta-data properly. With these updates, it is now possible to process VLBI continuum and spectral line observations in CASA. This article describes the development and implementation, and presents an outline for the workflow when calibrating European VLBI Network or Very Long Baseline Array data in CASA. Though the CASA VLBI functionality has already been vetted extensively as part of the Event Horizon Telescope data processing, in this paper we compare results for the same dataset processed in CASA and AIPS. We find identical results for the two packages and conclude that CASA in some cases performs better, though it cannot match AIPS for single-core processing time. The new functionality in CASA allows for easy development of pipelines or Jupyter notebooks, and thus contributes to raising VLBI data processing to present day standards for accessibility, reproducibility, and reusability., Comment: PASP in press, joint submission with the CASA reference paper; 12 pages, 5 figures

This white paper describes the science case for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and provides suggestions towards upgrade paths for the European VLBI Network (EVN). The EVN is a distributed long-baseline radio interferometric array, that operates at the very forefront of astronomical research. Recent results, together with the new science possibilities outlined in this vision document, demonstrate the EVN's potential to generate new and exciting results that will transform our view of the cosmos. Together with e-MERLIN, the EVN provides a range of baseline lengths that permit unique studies of faint radio sources to be made over a wide range of spatial scales. The science cases are reviewed in six chapters that cover the following broad areas: cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, innermost regions of active galactic nuclei, explosive phenomena and transients, stars and stellar masers in the Milky Way, celestial reference frames and space applications. The document concludes with identifying the synergies with other radio, as well as multi-band/multi-messenger instruments, and provide the recommendations for future improvements. The appendices briefly describe other radio VLBI arrays, the technological framework for EVN developments, and a selection of spectral lines of astrophysical interest below 100 GHz. We propose a probabilistic framework for performing simultaneous estimation of source structure and fringe-fitting parameters in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. As a first step, we demonstrate this technique through the analysis of synthetic short-duration Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of various geometric source models at 230 GHz, in the presence of baseline-dependent thermal noise. We perform Bayesian parameter estimation and model selection between the different source models to obtain reliable uncertainty estimates and correlations between various source and fringe-fitting related model parameters. We also compare the Bayesian posteriors with those obtained using widely-used VLBI data reduction packages such as CASA and AIPS, by fringe-fitting 200 Monte Carlo simulations of each source model with different noise realisations, to obtain distributions of the Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) estimates. We find that, in the presence of resolved asymmetric source structure and a given array geometry, the traditional practice of fringe-fitting with a point source model yields appreciable offsets in the estimated phase residuals, potentially biasing or limiting the dynamic range of the starting model used for self-calibration. Simultaneously estimating the source structure earlier in the calibration process with formal uncertainties improves the precision and accuracy of fringe-fitting and establishes the potential of the available data especially when there is little prior information. In recent years new functionality for VLBI data processing has been added to the CASA package. This paper presents the new CASA tasks 'fringefit' and 'accor', which are closely matched to their AIPS counterparts FRING and ACCOR. Several CASA tasks received upgrades to handle VLBI specific metadata. With the current CASA release VLBI data processing is possible, and functionality will be expanded in the upcoming release. Longer term developments include fringe fitting of broad, non-continuous frequency bands and dispersive delays, which will ensure that the number of use cases for VLBI calibration will increase in future CASA releases., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, EVN 2018 symposium proceedings

The large infrastructure projects for the next decade will allow a new quantum leap in terms of new possible science. ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, a strategic initiative to develop the scientific integration of Europe, has identified four facilities (SKA, CTA, KM3Net and E-ELT) deserving priority in support. The ASTERICS project aims to address the cross-cutting synergies and common challenges shared by the various Astronomy ESFRI and other world-class facilities. The project (22 partners across Europe) is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme with 15 MEuro in 4 years. Airborne acquisition and on-road mobile mapping provide complementary 3D information of an urban landscape: the former acquires roof structures, ground, and vegetation at a large scale, but lacks the facade and street-side details, while the latter is incomplete for higher floors and often totally misses out on pedestrian-only areas or undriven districts. In this work, we introduce an approach that efficiently unifies a detailed street-side Structure-from-Motion (SfM) or Multi-View Stereo (MVS) point cloud and a coarser but more complete point cloud from airborne acquisition in a joint surface mesh. We propose a point cloud blending and a volumetric fusion based on ray casting across a 3D tetrahedralization (3DT), extended with data reduction techniques to handle large datasets. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to adopt a 3DT approach for airborne/street-side data fusion. Our pipeline exploits typical characteristics of airborne and ground data, and produces a seamless, watertight mesh that is both complete and detailed. In this paper a description is given of the SFXC software correlator, developed and maintained at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). The software is designed to run on generic Linux-based computing clusters. The correlation algorithm is explained in detail, as are some of the novel modes that software correlation has enabled, such as wide-field VLBI imaging through the use of multiple phase centres and pulsar gating and binning. This is followed by an overview of the software architecture. Adding VLBI capability to the SKA arrays will greatly broaden the science of the SKA, and is feasible within the current specifications. SKA-VLBI can be initially implemented by providing phased-array outputs for SKA1-MID and SKA1-SUR and using these extremely sensitive stations with other radio telescopes, and in SKA2 by realising a distributed configuration providing baselines up to thousands of km, merging it with existing VLBI networks. We report the discovery of a massive ultra-compact quiescent galaxy that has been strongly-lensed into multiple images by a foreground galaxy at z = 0.960. This system was serendipitously discovered as a set of extremely Ks-bright high-redshift galaxies with red J - Ks colors using new data from the UltraVISTA YJHKs near-infrared survey. The system was also previously identified as an optically-faint lens/source system using the COSMOS ACS imaging by Faure et al. (2008, 2011). Photometric redshifts for the three brightest images of the source galaxy determined from twenty-seven band photometry place the source at z = 2.4 +/- 0.1. We provide an updated lens model for the system which is a good fit to the positions and morphologies of the galaxies in the ACS image. The lens model implies that the magnification of the three brightest images is a factor of 4 - 5. We use the lens model, combined with the Ks-band image to constrain the size and Sersic profile of the galaxy. The best-fit model is an ultra-compact galaxy (Re = 0.64^{+0.08}_{-0.18} kpc, lensing-corrected), with a Sersic profile that is intermediate between a disk and bulge profile (n = 2.2^{+2.3}_{-0.9}). We present aperture photometry for the source galaxy images which have been corrected for flux contamination from the central lens. The best-fit stellar population model is a massive galaxy (Log(M_{star}/M_{sol}) = 10.8^{+0.1}_{-0.1}, lensing-corrected) with an age of 1.0^{+1.0}_{-0.4} Gyr, moderate dust extinction (Av = 0.8^{+0.5}_{-0.6}), and a low specific star formation rate (Log(SSFR) < -11.0 yr^{-1}). This is typical of massive "red-and-dead" galaxies at this redshift and confirms that this source is the first bona fide strongly-lensed massive ultra-compact quiescent galaxy to be discovered. We present stellar mass surface density profiles of a mass-selected sample of 177 galaxies at 0.5 < z < 2.5, obtained using very deep HST optical and near-infrared data over the GOODS-South field, including recent CANDELS data. Accurate stellar mass surface density profiles have been measured for the first time for a complete sample of high-redshift galaxies more massive than 10^10.7 M_sun. The key advantage of this study compared to previous work is that the surface brightness profiles are deconvolved for PSF smoothing, allowing accurate measurements of the structure of the galaxies. The surface brightness profiles account for contributions from complex galaxy structures such as rings and faint outer disks. Mass profiles are derived using radial rest-frame u-g color profiles and a well-established empirical relation between these colors and the stellar mass-to-light ratio. We derive stellar half-mass radii from the mass profiles, and find that these are on average ~25% smaller than rest-frame g band half-light radii. This average size difference of 25% is the same at all redshifts, and does not correlate with stellar mass, specific star formation rate, effective surface density, Sersic index, or galaxy size. Although on average the difference between half-mass size and half-light size is modest, for approximately 10% of massive galaxies this difference is more than a factor two. These extreme galaxies are mostly extended, disk-like systems with large central bulges. These results are robust, but could be impacted if the central dust extinction becomes high. ALMA observations can be used to explore this possibility. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 near-infrared imaging obtained of the GOODS-South field as part of the CANDELS survey to investigate a stellar mass-limited sample of quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5. We measure surface brightness profiles for these galaxies using a method that properly measures low surface brightness flux at large radii. We find that quiescent galaxies at z ~ 2 very closely follow Sersic profiles, with n_{median} = 3.7, and have no excess flux at large radii. Their effective radii are a factor ~ 4 smaller than those of low-redshift quiescent galaxies of similar mass. However, there is significant spread in sizes (sigma_{log r_e} = 0.24), with the largest z ~ 2 galaxies lying close to the z = 0 mass-size relation. We compare the stellar mass surface density profiles with those of massive elliptical galaxies in the Virgo cluster and confirm that most of the mass-growth which occurs between z ~ 2 and z = 0 must be due to accretion of material onto the outer regions of the galaxies. Additionally, we investigate the evolution in the size distribution of massive quiescent galaxies. We find that the minimum size growth required for z ~ 2 quiescent galaxies to fall within the z = 0 size distribution is a factor ~ 2 smaller than the total median size growth between z ~ 2 and z = 0., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We use ultradeep HST WFC3/IR imaging of the HUDF to investigate the rest-frame optical morphologies of a mass-selected sample of galaxies at z~2. We find a large variety of galaxy morphologies, ranging from large, blue, disk-like galaxies to compact, red, early-type galaxies. We derive rest-frame u-g color profiles for these galaxies and show that most z~2 galaxies in our sample have negative color gradients such that their cores are red. Although these color gradients may partly be caused by radial variations in dust content, they point to the existence of older stellar populations in the centers of z~2 galaxies. This result is consistent with an "inside-out" scenario of galaxy growth. We find that the median color gradient is fairly constant with redshift: [Delta(u-g_{rest})/Delta(log r)]_{median} = -0.46, -0.44 and -0.49 for z~2, z~1 and z=0, respectively. Using structural parameters derived from surface brightness profiles we confirm that at z~2 galaxy morphology correlates well with specific star formation rate. At the same mass, star forming galaxies have larger effective radii, bluer rest-frame u-g colors and lower Sersic indices than quiescent galaxies. These correlations are very similar to those at lower redshift, suggesting that the relations that give rise to the Hubble sequence at z=0 are already in place for massive galaxies at this early epoch., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 7 pages, 4 figures

There is growing evidence of relativistic jets in radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (RL-NLS1) galaxies. We constrain the observational properties of the radio emission in the first RL-NLS1 galaxy ever detected in gamma-rays, PMN J0948+0022, i.e., its flux density and structure in total intensity and in polarization, its compactness, and variability. We performed three real-time e-VLBI observations of PMN J0948+0022 at 22 GHz, using a global array including telescopes in Europe, East Asia, and Australia. These are the first e-VLBI science observations ever carried out with a global array, reaching a maximum baseline length of 12458 km. The observations were part of a large multiwavelength campaign in 2009. The source is detected at all three epochs. The structure is dominated by a bright component, more compact than 55 microarcsec, with a fainter component at a position angle theta~ 35deg. Relativistic beaming is required by the observed brightness temperature of 3.4x10^11 K. Polarization is detected at a level of about 1%. The parameters derived by the VLBI observations, in addition to the broad-band properties, confirm that PMN J0948+0022 is similar to flat spectrum radio quasars. The detection of gamma-ray emission by Fermi-LAT from the radio loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 PMN J0948+0022 (Abdo et al. 2009, ApJ 699, 976) triggered a multi-wavelength campaign between March and July 2009. Given its high compactness (Doi et al. 2006, PASJ 58, 829), inverted spectrum, and 0deg declination, the source was an ideal target to observe at 22 GHz with a Global VLBI array extending from Europe to East Asia and Australia. In order to deliver prompt results to be analysed in combination with the other instruments participating in the campaign, the observations were carried out with real time VLBI, for the first time on a Global scale. Indeed, the main results have been published just a few months after the campaign (Abdo et al. 2009, ApJ 707, 727). In this contribution, we present some preliminary observational results from the completed ultra-deep survey of 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen at redshifts z=0.164-0.224 with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. In two separate fields, a total of 160 individual galaxies has been detected in neutral hydrogen, with HI masses varying from 1.1x10^9 to 4.0x10^10 Msun. The largest galaxies are spatially resolved by the synthesized beam of 23x37 arcsec^2 while the velocity resolution of 19 km/s allowed the HI emission lines to be well resolved. The large scale structure in the surveyed volume is traced well in HI, apart from the highest density regions like the cores of galaxy clusters. All significant HI detections have obvious or plausible optical counterparts which are usually blue late-type galaxies that are UV-bright. One of the observed fields contains a massive Butcher-Oemler cluster but none of the associated blue galaxies has been detected in HI. The data suggest that the lower-luminosity galaxies at z=0.2 are more gas-rich than galaxies of similar luminosities at z=0, pending a careful analysis of the completeness near the detection limit. Optical counterparts of the HI detected galaxies are mostly located in the 'blue cloud' of the galaxy population although several galaxies on the 'red sequence' are also detected in HI. We present very deep Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) photometry of a massive, compact galaxy located in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. This quiescent galaxy has a spectroscopic redshift z=1.91 and has been identified as an extremely compact galaxy by Daddi et al. 2005. We use new H-F160W imaging data obtained with Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 to measure the deconvolved surface brightness profile to H = 28 mag arcsec**-2. We find that the surface brightness profile is well approximated by an n=3.7 Sersic profile. Our deconvolved profile is constructed by a new technique which corrects the best-fit Sersic profile with the residual of the fit to the observed image. This allows for galaxy profiles which deviate from a Sersic profile. We determine the effective radius of this galaxy: r_e=0.42 +- 0.14 kpc in the observed H-F160W-band. We show that this result is robust to deviations from the Sersic model used in the fit. We test the sensitivity of our analysis to faint "wings" in the profile using simulated galaxy images consisting of a bright compact component and a faint extended component. We find that due to the combination of the WFC3 imaging depth and our method's sensitivity to extended faint emission we can accurately trace the intrinsic surface brightness profile, and that we can therefore confidently rule out the existence of a faint extended envelope around the observed galaxy down to our surface brightness limit. The class of type Ic supernovae have drawn increasing attention since 1998 owing to their sparse association (only four so far) with long duration gamma-ray bursts. Although both phenomena originate from the core collapse of a massive star, supernovae emit mostly at optical wavelengths, whereas GRBs emit mostly in soft gamma-rays or hard X-rays. Though the GRB central engine generates ultra-relativistic jets, which beam the early emission into a narrow cone, no relativistic outflows have hitherto been found in type Ib/c supernovae explosions, despite theoretical expectations and searches. Here we report radio (interferometric) observations that reveal a mildly relativistic expansion in a nearby type Ic supernova, SN 2007gr. Using two observational epochs 60 days apart, we detect expansion of the source and establish a conservative lower limit for the average apparent expansion velocity of 0.6c. Independently, a second mildly relativistic supernova has been reported. Contrary to the radio data, optical observations of SN 2007gr indicate a typical type Ic supernova with ejecta velocities ~6000 km/s, much lower than in GRB-associated supernovae. We conclude that in SN 2007gr a small fraction of the ejecta produced a low-energy mildly relativistic bipolar radio jet, while the bulk of the ejecta were slower and, as shown by optical spectro-polarimetry, mildly aspherical., Comment: Nature, 10 pages (including supplementary material), 2 figures

Following the recent discovery of gamma rays from the radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846), we started a multiwavelength campaign from radio to gamma rays, which was carried out between the end of March and the beginning of July 2009. The source displayed activity at all the observed wavelengths: a general decreasing trend from optical to gamma-ray frequencies was followed by an increase of radio emission after less than two months from the peak of the gamma-ray emission. The largest flux change, about a factor of about 4, occurred in the X-ray band. The smallest was at ultraviolet and near-infrared frequencies, where the rate of the detected photons dropped by a factor 1.6-1.9. At optical wavelengths, where the sampling rate was the highest, it was possible to observe day-scale variability, with flux variations up to a factor of about 3. The behavior of PMN J0948+0022 observed in this campaign and the calculated power carried out by its jet in the form of protons, electrons, radiation and magnetic field are quite similar to that of blazars, specifically of flat-spectrum radio quasars. These results confirm the idea that radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies host relativistic jets with power similar to that of average blazars., Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures. A pilot study with the powerful new backend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) of two galaxy clusters at z=0.2 has revealed neutral hydrogen emission from 42 galaxies. The WSRT probes a total combined volume of 3.4x10^4 Mpc^3 at resolutions of 54x86 kpc^2 and 19.7 km/s, surveying both clusters and the large scale structure in which they are embedded. In Abell 963, a dynamically relaxed, lensing Butcher-Oemler cluster with a high blue fraction, most of the gas-rich galaxies are located between 1 and 3 Mpc in projection, northeast from the cluster core. Their velocities are slightly redshifted with respect to the cluster, and this is likely a background group. None of the blue galaxies in the core of Abell 963 are detected in HI, although they have similar colors and luminosities as the HI detected galaxies in the cluster outskirts and field. Abell 2192 is less massive and more diffuse. Here, the gas-rich galaxies are more uniformly distributed. The detected HI masses range from 5x10^9 to 4x10^10 Msun. Some galaxies are spatially resolved, providing rudimentary rotation curves useful for detailed kinematic studies of galaxies in various environments. This is a pilot for ultra-deep integrations down to HI masses of 8x10^8 Msun, providing a complete survey of the gas content of galaxies at z=0.2, probing environments ranging from cluster cores to voids., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures + 1 Plate, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

A pilot study with the powerful new backend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) of two galaxy clusters at z=0.2 has revealed neutral hydrogen emission from 39 galaxies. The volume probed for each cluster is 1.7x10^4 Mpc^3, with spatial and velocity resolutions of 54x86 kpc^2 and 19.7 km/s, covering both clusters and the large scale structure in which they are embedded. The spatial distribution of the HI detected galaxies is very different for the two clusters. In Abell 963, most of the gas-rich galaxies are located to the northeast, at 1-3 Mpc from the cluster center in projection. Their velocities are slightly redshifted with respect to the cluster mean. This could be a gas-rich group falling in from the front. Abell 2192 is less massive and more diffuse, with the gas rich galaxies more uniformly spread over a large region around the cluster. The HI masses of the detected galaxies range from 5x10^9 to 4x10^10 Msun. Some HI-rich galaxies are spatially resolved and rudimentary rotation curves are derived, showing the prospect for Tully-Fisher studies of different galaxy populations in these environments. Only one galaxy is detected within a 1 Mpc radius from the center of the Butcher-Oemler cluster Abell 963, and none of the blue B-O galaxies which are all located within the central Mpc. The HI detected galaxies outside the central Mpc are of similar colour and magnitude as the non-detected B-O galaxies, indicating that the blue B-O galaxies are gas-poor compared to their counterparts in the field., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. to appear in the New Astronomy Review proceedings of "The Fate of Gas in Galaxies", held in Dwingeloo, July 2006

We report the results of the first two 5 GHz e-VLBI observations of the X-ray binary Cygnus X-3 using the European VLBI Network. Two successful observing sessions were held, on 2006 April 20, when the system was in a quasi-quiescent state several weeks after a major flare, and on 2006 May 18, a few days after another flare. At the first epoch we detected faint emission probably associated with a fading jet, spatially separated from the X-ray binary. The second epoch in contrast reveals a bright, curved, relativistic jet more than 40 milliarcseconds in extent. In the first, and probably also second epochs, the X-ray binary core is not detected, which may indicate a temporary suppression of jet production as seen in some black hole X-ray binaries in certain X-ray states. Spatially resolved polarisation maps at the second epoch provide evidence of interaction between the ejecta and the surrounding medium. We present results from the first successful open call e-VLBI science run, observing the X-ray binary GRS 1915+105. e-VLBI science allows the rapid production of VLBI radio maps, within hours of an observation rather than weeks, facilitating a decision for follow-up observations. A total of 6 telescopes observing at 5 GHz across the European VLBI Network (EVN) were correlated in real time at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). Constant data rates of 128 Mbps were transferred from each telescope, giving 4 TB of raw sampled data over the 12 hours of the whole experiment. Throughout this, GRS 1915+105 was observed for a total of 5.5 hours, producing 2.8 GB of visibilities of correlated data. A weak flare occurred during our observations, and we detected a slightly resolved component of 2.7 x 1.2 milliarcsecond with a position angle of 140 (+/-2) degrees. Studying transient phenomena with the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique faces severe difficulties because the turnaround time of the experiments from the observations to the scientific result is rather long. The e-VLBI technique has made it possible to transfer the data from a number of European VLBI Network (EVN) telescopes to the central data processor at JIVE through optical fibres, and correlate them in real time. The main goal of this paper is to introduce this rapidly developing new technique, by presenting observational results from a recent experiment. We observed SN2001em, a Type Ib/c supernova with an e-VLBI array and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) in the UK. The source is marginally detected in our observations. We cannot make definite conclusions whether it is resolved at 1.6 GHz or not. Our data show that SN2001em either started fading in the last couple of months, or its radio spectrum is inverted at low frequencies,indicating free-free or synchrotron self-absorption. Spurred by the advent of disk-based recording systems and the nearly explosive increase of internet bandwidth, eVLBI (Parsley et al. 2004) has undergone a remarkable development over the past two years. From ftp-based transfers of small amounts of astronomical data, through near real-time correlation (disk-buffered at the correlator), it has culminated this spring in the first three telescope real-time correlation at JIVE (Onsala, Westerbork and Jodrell Bank). In this paper we will give a review of this development and the current state of affairs. We will also address the current limitations and the way we may improve both bandwidth and reliability and finally we will discuss the opportunities a true high-bandwidth real-time VLBI correlator will provide., Comment: 4 pages. 3 figures. Traditionally VLBI observations focus on a small patch of sky and image typically a few 100 mas around a bright source, which is often used to self-calibrate the data. High spectral and time resolution is needed to image a larger area, in principle up to the primary beam of the individual telescopes. The EVN MkIV data processor at JIVE is being upgraded to make such high resolution data its standard product. We present CCD photometry in UBVRI of several thousand Galactic field stars in four large (>1 degree^2) regions centered on diffuse interstellar dust clouds, commonly referred to as ``cirrus'' clouds (with optical depth A_V less than unity). Our goal in studying these stars is to investigate the properties of the cirrus clouds. A comparison of the observed stellar surface density between on-cloud and off-cloud regions as a function of apparent magnitude in each of the five bands effectively yields a measure of the extinction through each cloud. For two of the cirrus clouds, this method is used to derive UBVRI star counts-based extinction curves, and U-band counts are used to place constraints on the cloud distance. The color distribution of stars and their location in (U-B, B-V) and (B-V, V-I) color-color space are analyzed in order to determine the amount of selective extinction (reddening) caused by the cirrus. The color excesses, A_lambda-A_V, derived from stellar color histogram offsets for the four clouds, are better fit by a reddening law that rises steeply towards short wavelengths [R_V==A_V/E(B-V)<=2] than by the standard law (R_V=3.1). This may be indicative of a higher-than-average abundance of small dust grains relative to larger grains in diffuse cirrus clouds. The shape of the counts-based effective extinction curve and a comparison of different estimates of the dust optical depth (extinction optical depth derived from background star counts/colors; emission optical depth derived from far infrared measurements), are used to measure the degree of clumpiness in clouds. The set of techniques explored in this paper can be readily adapted to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data set in order to carry out a systematic, large-scale study of cirrus clouds., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures (postscript, gif, jpg). We present initial results from the first optical spectroscopic survey of high latitude Galactic cirrus clouds. The observed shape of the cirrus spectrum does not agree with that of scattered ambient Galactic starlight. This mismatch can be explained by the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the diffuse interstellar medium, as found in many other astronomical objects, probably caused by photoluminescence of hydrocarbons. The integrated ERE intensity, I_ERE \approx 1.2 x 10^{-5} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} sr^{-1}, is roughly a third of the scattered light intensity, consistent with recent color measurements of diffuse Galactic light. The peak of the cirrus ERE (lambda_{0} \sim 6000 AA) is shifted towards short (bluer) wavelengths compared to the ERE in sources excited by intense ultraviolet radiation, such as HII regions (lambda_{0} sim 8000 AA); such a trend is seen in laboratory experiments on hydrogenated amorphous carbon films., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. We present the results of a neutral hydrogen survey of the Bootes void carried out with the VLA in D-array. The survey covers $\sim 1100$ Mpc$^{3}$, about 1\% of the volume of the void as defined by Kirshner \etal 1987. We observed 24 fields, centered on known void galaxies; 16 of these were detected in HI. Eighteen uncataloged companion galaxies were discovered directly in the HI line at distances of $45\sec$ to $14.5\min$ from the target galaxies. We also present the results of follow-up optical imaging observations and discovery of one additional Bootes void galaxy, found through spectroscopy of a number of apparent companions to known void members. Our angular resolution is $\sim 1\min$ (45 kpc) \footnote{Throughout this paper, we have assumed ${H_{0}}$ = ${\rm 100\,km\,s^{-1}Mpc^{-1}}$.}, each field has a size of $\sim 1\deg$ (2.7 Mpc). The detected HI masses range from $8\times 10^{8}$ to $1\times 10^{10} \msol$. Typically our $2\sigma$ HI column density sensitivity is $2\times 10^{19} {\rm cm^{-2}}$. We discuss the results of a VLA HI survey of the Bootes void and compare the distribution and HI properties of the void galaxies to those of galaxies found in a survey of regions of mean cosmic density. The Bootes survey covers 1100 Mpc$^{3}$, or $\sim$ 1\% of the volume of the void and consists of 24 cubes of typically 2 Mpc * 2 Mpc * 1280 km/s, centered on optically known galaxies. Sixteen targets were detected in HI; 18 previously uncataloged objects were discovered directly in HI. The control sample consists of 12 cubes centered on IRAS selected galaxies with FIR luminosities similar to those of the Bootes targets and located in regions of 1 to 2 times the cosmic mean density. In addition to the 12 targets 29 companions were detected in HI. We find that the number of galaxies within 1 Mpc of the targets is the same to within a factor of two for void and control samples, and thus that the small scale clustering of galaxies is the same in regions that differ by a factor of $\sim$ 6 in density on larger scales. A dynamical analysis of the galaxies in the void suggests that on scales of a few Mpc the galaxies are gravitationally bound, forming interacting galaxy pairs, loose pairs and loose groups. One group is compact enough to qualify as a Hickson compact group. The galaxies found in the void are mostly late-type, gas rich systems. A careful scrutiny of their HI and optical properties shows them to be very similar to field galaxies of the same morphological type. This, combined with our finding that the small scale clustering of the galaxies in the void is the same as in the field, suggests that it is the near environment that mostly affects the evolution of galaxies., Comment: Latex file of abstract. We analyze the properties of a sample of galaxies identified in a 21-cm, HI-line survey of selected areas in the Perseus-Pisces supercluster and its foreground void. Twelve fields were observed in the supercluster, five of them (target fields) centered on optically bright galaxies, and the other seven (blank fields) selected to contain no bright galaxies. We detected nine previously uncataloged, gas-rich galaxies, six of them in the target fields. We also detected HI from seven previously cataloged galaxies in these fields. Observations in the void covered the same volume as the twelve supercluster fields at the same HI-mass sensitivity, but no objects were detected. Combining our HI data with optical broad-band and H-alpha imaging, we conclude that the properties of HI-selected galaxies do not differ substantially from those of late-type galaxies found in optical surveys. In particular, the galaxies in our sample do not appear to be unusually faint for their HI mass, or for their circular velocity. The previously cataloged, optically bright galaxies in our survey volume dominate the total HI mass density and cross-section; the uncataloged galaxies contribute only 19% of the mass and 12% of the cross-section. Thus, existing estimates of the density and cross-section of neutral hydrogen, most of which are based on optically-selected galaxy samples, are probably accurate., Comment: 24 pages w/o figures, uuencoded postscript.
