Abstract Stroke and subsequent neuroregenerative processes cause changes in neural organization of attentional functions. In this study, we attempted to identify differences in neural synchronization patterns during a visual Go/No-Go task in people with post-stroke aphasia in both subacute and chronic stroke phases. To identify neuronal underpinnings of the behavioral differences we investigated pairwise connectivity patterns using corrected imaginary phase locking value and graph-theoretic measures (efficiency, modularity and clustering coefficient) at global and local level in subacute (n = 13) and chronic stroke phases (n = 14) during a Go/No-Go task. We observed significantly lower phase synchronization in the Subacute Group in the alpha band in the connections spanning frontal and central areas of both hemispheres alongside lower local efficiency and clustering coefficient in the left frontal region. Additionally, we observed higher modularity in the beta band in the unaffected right parietal region in the Subacute Group which may denote inhibition of motor and attention functions. Those mechanisms could serve to align cognitive abilities between the damaged and healthy hemispheres, harmonizing the activity of the neuronal networks of both hemispheres disrupted by the effects of the stroke. Our findings have potential implications for rehabilitation therapies, which should take into account the pattern of connectivity changes during different phases of reovery.

It is known that Temporal Information Processing (TIP) underpins our cognitive functioning. Previous research has focused on the relationship between TIP efficiency and oscillatory brain activity, especially the gamma rhythm; however, non-oscillatory (aperiodic or 1/f) brain activity has often been missed. Recent studies have identified the 1/f component as being important for the functioning of the brain. Therefore, the current study aimed to verify whether TIP efficiency is associated with specific EEG resting state cortical activity patterns, including oscillatory and non-oscillatory (aperiodic) brain activities. To measure individual TIP efficiency, we used two behavioral tasks in which the participant judges the order of two sounds separated by millisecond intervals. Based on the above procedure, participants were classified into two groups with high and low TIP efficiency. Using cluster-based permutation analyses, we examined between-group differences in oscillatory and non-oscillatory (aperiodic) components across the 1–90 Hz range. The results revealed that the groups differed in the aperiodic component across the 30–80 Hz range in fronto-central topography. In other words, participants with low TIP efficiency exhibited higher levels of aperiodic activity, and thus a flatter frequency spectrum compared to those with high TIP efficiency. We conclude that participants with low TIP efficiency display higher levels of ‘neural noise’, which is associated with poorer quality and speed of neural processing.

Background: Aphasia is often accompanied by impairment of non-language cognitive functions. Assessment of cognitive capacity in people with aphasia (PWA) with standard neuropsychological methods may be problematic due to their language difficulties. Numerous experimental studies indicate that P300 may be considered as an index of cognitive capacity in both healthy and clinical samples. Accordingly, the measurement of event-related potentials enables the investigation of behaviourally non-observable mental processes underlying the cognitive functions that are assessed with neuropsychological tests. Aims: To investigate in PWA the relationship between P300 parameters and cognitive function efficiency measured with neuropsychological methods. Methods & Procedures: A total of 25 PWA after left-hemispheric stroke participated in the study. Electrophysiological (EEG) signals were recorded during the performance of a visual Go-No Go task. P300 was identified on nine electrodes, which were then pooled in three lines: left (F3, C3, P3), central (Fz, Cz, Pz) and right (F4, C4, P4). The neuropsychological assessment of cognitive functions included mental speed, short-term memory, divided attention, executive functions, auditory language comprehension and expression. Outcomes & Results: P300 latency correlated with indices of several cognitive functions: temporal resolution, psychomotor speed, spatial short-term memory, planning, word and sentence comprehension, as well as verbal fluency. Shorter P300 latencies were accompanied by greater efficiency of the abovementioned functions. In contrast, significant correlations between P300 amplitudes and cognitive measures were fragmentary. Conclusions & Implications: In PWA, P300 latency might be related to cognitive functioning, especially to measures that rely heavily on the speed of information processing. However, P300 seems to be unrelated to more complex cognitive functions. P300 latency may be used as a neurophysiological correlate of cognitive efficiency in PWA and might have potential applications in monitoring the effects of therapeutic interventions in this patient group.

Abstract Temporal information processing (TIP) constitutes a complex construct that underlies many cognitive functions and operates in a few hierarchically ordered time domains. This study aimed to verify the relationship between the tens of milliseconds and hundreds of milliseconds domains, referring to perceptual and motor timing, respectively. Sixty four young healthy individuals participated in this study. They underwent two auditory temporal order judgement tasks to assess their performance in the tens of milliseconds domain; on this basis, groups of high-level performers (HLP) and low-level performers (LLP) were identified. Then, a maximum tapping task was used to evaluate performance in the hundreds of milliseconds domain. The most remarkable result was that HLP achieved a faster tapping rate and synchronised quicker with their “internal clock” during the tapping task than did LLP. This result shows that there is a relationship between accuracy in judging temporally asynchronous stimuli and ability to achieve and maintain the pace of a movement adequate to one’s internal pacemaker. This could indicate the strong contribution of a common timing mechanism, responsible for temporal organisation and coordination of behaviours across different millisecond domains.

In this study, we hypothesized that biotinylated and/or glycidol-flanked fourth-generation polyamidoamine (PAMAM G4) dendrimers could be a tool for efficient drug transport into glioma and liver cancer cells. For this purpose, native PAMAM (G4) dendrimers, biotinylated (G4B), glycidylated (G4gl), and biotinylated and glycidylated (G4Bgl), were synthesized, and their cytotoxicity, uptake, and accumulation in vitro and in vivo were studied in relation to the transport mediated by the sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter (SMVT). The studies showed that the human temozolomide-resistant glioma cell line (U-118 MG) and hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2) indicated a higher amount of SMVT than human HaCaT keratinocytes (HaCaTs) used as a model of normal cells. The G4gl and G4Bgl dendrimers were highly biocompatible in vitro (they did not affect proliferation and mitochondrial activity) against HaCaT and U-118 MG glioma cells and in vivo (against Caenorhabditis elegans and Wistar rats). The studied compounds penetrated efficiently into all studied cell lines, but inconsistently with the uptake pattern observed for biotin and disproportionately for the level of SMVT. G4Bgl was taken up and accumulated after 48 h to the highest degree in glioma U-118 MG cells, where it was distributed in the whole cell area, including the nuclei. It did not induce resistance symptoms in glioma cells, unlike HepG2 cells. Based on studies on Wistar rats, there are indications that it can also penetrate the blood–brain barrier and act in the central nervous system area. Therefore, it might be a promising candidate for a carrier of therapeutic agents in glioma therapy. In turn, visualization with a confocal microscope showed that biotinylated G4B penetrated efficiently into the body of C. elegans, and it may be a useful vehicle for drugs used in anthelmintic therapy.

Abstract People with aphasia (PWA) often present deficits in non-linguistic cognitive functions, such as executive functions, working memory, and temporal information processing (TIP), which intensify the associated speech difficulties and hinder the rehabilitation process. Therefore, training targeting non-linguistic cognitive function deficiencies may be useful in the treatment of aphasia. The present study compared the effects of the novel Dr. Neuronowski® training method (experimental training), which particularly emphasizes TIP, with the linguistic training commonly applied in clinical practice (control training). Thirty four PWA underwent linguistic and non-linguistic assessments before and after the training as well as a follow-up assessment. Patients were randomly assigned to either experimental (n = 18) or control groups (n = 16). The experimental training improved both non-linguistic functions (TIP and verbal short-term and working memory) and linguistic functions: phoneme discrimination, sentence comprehension, grammar comprehension, verbal fluency, and naming. In contrast, the control training improved only grammar comprehension and naming. The follow-up assessment confirmed the stability of the effects of both trainings over time. Thus, in PWA, Dr. Neuronowski® training appears to have broader benefits for linguistic and non-linguistic functions than does linguistic training. This provides evidence that Dr. Neuronowski® may be considered a novel tool with potential clinical applications.

The proposed one-pot, two-step approach allows access to the isomers containing aryl substituents in mutual syn positions. The resulting 2-silyl enynes can be further converted by proto- or halodesilylation.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the number of cancer cases and deaths worldwide is predicted to nearly double by 2030, reaching 21.7 million cases and 13 million fatalities. The increase in cancer mortality is due to limitations in the diagnosis and treatment options that are currently available. The close relationship between diagnostics and medicine has made it possible for cancer patients to receive precise diagnoses and individualized care. This article discusses newly developed compounds with potential for photodynamic therapy and diagnostic applications, as well as those already in use. In addition, it discusses the use of artificial intelligence in the analysis of diagnostic images obtained using, among other things, theranostic agents.

Abstract Planning is a fundamental mental ability related to executive functions. It allows to select, order and execute subgoals to achieve a goal. Studies have indicated that these processes are characterised by a specific temporal dynamics reflected in temporal information processing (TIP) in some tens of millisecond domain. Both planning and TIP decline with age but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The novel value of the present study was to examine these mechanisms in young (n = 110) and elderly (n = 91) participants in Tower of London task, considering two structural properties of problems: search depth related to static maintenance in working memory, and goal ambiguity reflecting dynamic cognitive flexibility. Results revealed that TIP predicted planning accuracy both directly and indirectly (via preplanning) but only in young participants in problems characterised by high goal ambiguity. Better planning is related to longer preplanning and more efficient TIP. This result demonstrates for the first time age-related differences in the contribution of TIP to planning. In young participants TIP contributed to dynamic cognitive flexibility, but not to static maintenance processes. In elderly such relation was not observed probably because the deficient planning might depend on working memory maintenance rather than on cognitive flexibility.

The medical literature describes the problem of anxiety and fear of using glucocorticosteroid drugs and their side effects in patients with bronchial asthma. Frequently, unjustified fears of patients are the cause of non-compliance with therapeutic recommendations, which in turn results in the lack of therapeutic effects [24]. In order to counteract this unfavorable phenomenon, to increase the safety and effectiveness of therapy in patients with bronchial asthma, large-scale educational activities should be carried out both among medical staff and patients on the importance of glucocorticosteroids in the treatment of bronchial asthma and their impact on the degree of control of the disease.

Fulvestrant (F), lapatinib (L), and paclitaxel (P) are hydrophobic, anticancer drugs used in the treatment of estrogen receptor (ER) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-positive breast cancer. In this study, glycidylated PAMAM G4 dendrimers, substituted with F, L, and/or P and targeting tumor cells, were synthesized and characterized, and their antitumor activity against glioma U-118 MG and non-small cell lung cancer A549 cells was tested comparatively with human non-tumorogenic keratinocytes (HaCaT). All cell lines were ER+ and EGFR+. In addition, the described drugs were tested in the context of antinematode therapy on C. elegans. The results show that the water-soluble conjugates of G4P, G4F, G4L, and G4PFL actively entered the tested cells via endocytosis due to the positive zeta potential (between 13.57–40.29 mV) and the nanoparticle diameter of 99–138 nm. The conjugates of G4P and G4PFL at nanomolar concentrations were the most active, and the least active conjugate was G4F. The tested conjugates inhibited the proliferation of HaCaT and A549 cells; in glioma cells, cytotoxicity was associated mainly with cell damage (mitochondria and membrane transport). The toxicity of the conjugates was proportional to the number of drug residues attached, with the exception of G4L; its action was two- and eight-fold stronger against glioma and keratinocytes, respectively, than the equivalent of lapatinib alone. Unfortunately, non-cancer HaCaT cells were the most sensitive to the tested constructs, which forced a change in the approach to the use of ER and EGFR receptors as a goal in cancer therapy. In vivo studies on C. elegans have shown that all compounds, most notably G4PFL, may be potentially useful in anthelmintic therapy.

Two series of MCM-36 zeolites intercalated with various pillars and modified with iron were synthesized, analyzed with respect to their physicochemical properties, and tested as catalysts for the NH3-SCR process. It was found that the characteristic MWW morphology of MCM-36 can be obtained successfully using silica, alumina, and iron oxide as pillars. Additionally, one-pot synthesis of the material with iron resulted in the incorporation of monomeric Fe3+ species into the framework positions. The results of catalytic tests revealed that the one-pot synthesized sample intercalated with silica and alumina was the most efficient catalyst of NO reduction, exhibiting ca. 100% activity at 250 °C. The outstanding performance of the material was attributed to the abundance of Lewis acid sites and the beneficial influence of alumina on the distribution of iron species in the zeolite. In contrast, the active centers originating from the Fe2O3 pillars improved the NO conversion in the high-temperature range. Nevertheless, the aggregated particles of the metal oxide limited the access of the reacting molecules to the inner structure of the catalyst, which affected the overall activity and promoted the formation of N2O above 300 °C.

Bronchial asthma due to complex etiopathogenesis, the frequency of exacerbations is a serious medical and social problem [10]. At the root of the disease lies the chronic inflammatory process, which is the main cause of symptoms [5,18]. In the therapy of bronchial asthma, the basis is drugs administered directly to the affected area of the inflammatory process by various inhalation techniques. Ignorance of drug inhalation techniques and/or failure of the patient/caregivers to make pharmacotherapy recommendations is associated with a risk of many side effects. In order for patient therapy to be safe and effective, it is necessary to carry out large-scale educational activities both among medical staff as well as patients and their caregivers in the field of aerosol therapy techniques. Streszczenie Astma oskrzelowa ze względu na złożoną etiopatogenezę, częstość zaostrzeń stanowi poważny problem medyczny jak i społeczny [10]. U podłoża choroby leży przewlekły proces zapalny, który jest główną przyczyną objawów [5,18]. W terapii astmy oskrzelowej podstawę stanowią leki podawane bezpośrednio do miejsca objętego procesem zapalnych za pomocą różnych technik inhalacyjnych. Nieznajomość technik inhalacji leków i / lub niestosowanie się pacjenta / jego opiekunów do zaleceń w zakresie farmakoterapii wiąże się z ryzykiem wielu działań niepożądanych. Aby terapia pacjentów była bezpieczna i skuteczna konieczne jest prowadzenie na szeroką skalę działań edukacyjnych zarówno wśród personelu medycznego jak też pacjentów i ich opiekunów z zakresu technik aerozoloterapii. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a systemic chronic disease that is characterized by chronic obstructive changes, recurrent respiratory tract infections, and digestive disorders and their consequences. In CF, digestive tract disorders include three functions: digestion, absorption and motor activity. Education on the subject of modified nutrition principles and their impact on the course of the disease, prevention of complications, length and quality of life of the child is a function of the therapy set.

Selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR) is very efficient DeNOx technique. According to some problems with the commercial catalyst, novel one should be prepared. Hydrotalcites are potential precursors of the new catalysts of NH3-SCR. In this paper, several attempts to apply these materials in NH3-SCR are presented.

Previous studies indicate that there are at least two levels of temporal processing: the sub- and supra-second domains. The relationship between these domains remains unclear. The aim of this study was to test whether performance on the sub-second level is related to that on the supra-second one, or whether these two domains operate independently. Participants were 118 healthy adults (mean age = 23 years). The sub-second level was studied with a temporal-order judgment task and indexed by the Temporal Order Threshold (TOT), on which lower values corresponded to better performance. On the basis of TOT results, the initial sample was classified into two groups characterized by either higher temporal efficiency (HTE) or lower temporal efficiency (LTE). Next, the efficiency of performance on the supra-second level was studied in these two groups using the subjective accentuation task, in which participants listened to monotonous sequences of beats and were asked to mentally accentuate every n-th beat to create individual rhythmic patterns. The extent of temporal integration was assessed on the basis of the number of beats being united and better performance corresponded to longer units. The novel results are differences between groups in this temporal integration. The HTE group integrated beats in significantly longer units than did the LTE group. Moreover, for tasks with higher mental load, the HTE group relied more on a constant time strategy, whereas the LTE group relied more on mental counting, probably because of less efficient temporal integration. These findings provide insight into associations between sub- and supra-second levels of processing and point to a common time keeping system, which is active independently of temporal domain.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is classified as a rare genetic disease and at the same time is the most common inherited disease in an autosomal recessive way. In Poland the disease is diagnosed in 1 in 4394-5000 live neonatal births [7, 9]. CF is a systemic chronic disease with progressive progression, incurable [10]. The cause of most problems in patients with CF are: chronic obstructive lesions and respiratory tract infections and impaired digestion processes with their consequences. The basis in the patient care of CF is the education of the patient/his caregivers in the prevention and treatment of bronchopulmonary disease and modified nutrition rules.

The application of layered zeolites of MWW topology in environmental catalysis has attracted growing attention in recent years; however, only a few studies have explored their performance in selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR). Thus, our work describes, for the first time, the one-pot synthesis of Fe-modified NH3-SCR catalysts supported on MCM-22, MCM-36, and ITQ-2. The calculated chemical composition of the materials was Si/Al of 30 and 5 wt.% of Fe. The reported results indicated a correlation between the arrangement of MWW layers and the form of iron in the zeolitic structure. We have observed that one-pot synthesis resulted in high dispersion of Fe3+ sites, which significantly enhanced low-temperature activity and prevented N2O generation during the reaction. All of the investigated samples exhibited almost 100% NO conversion at 250 °C. The most satisfactory activity was exhibited by Fe-modified MCM-36, since 50% of NO reduction was obtained at 150 °C for this catalyst. This effect can be explained by the abundance of isolated Fe3+ species, which are active in low-temperature NH3-SCR. Additionally, SiO2 pillars present in MCM-36 provided an additional surface for the deposition of the active phase.
