1. Brief and intensive volcanic emissions from Ontong Java Nui heralded Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a

Abstract: Abstract The volcanic episode that formed Ontong Java Nui (OJN) in the western Pacific ~ 120 million-year-ago is thought to have triggered Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a, yet the cause-effect relationship remains insufficiently understood. Here, we present a Pb-Os-C isotope dataset for tracking OJN volcanism across a sedimentary sequence containing OAE1a record in the central Pacific. Lead isotopic evidence strongly supports the deposition of OJN-sourced volcanic ash layers at this site after a paired seawater δ13Ccarb–187Os/188Os shift and before the onset of OAE1a. The δ13Ccarb–187Os/188Os shift is attributable to the signature of the initial submarine OJN eruption. The subsequent unradiogenic Pb isotope shifts could represent ash fallout from the brief, explosive subaerial/shallow-marine eruption phase accompanied by intensive volcanic degassing and emissions. The apparent time lag between explosive OJN volcanism and OAE1a is intriguing, which can be accounted for by the delayed increase in the productivity after gas emissions.

Abstract: Abstract Background Increased incidence of lifestyle diseases as side-effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been reported in people living with HIV (PLWH). Few studies have evaluated obesity and hidden obesity in Japanese PLWH and their association with ART. In order to provide more appropriate drug selection and lifestyle guidance, we investigated the relationship between the effects of HIV infection and ART on the body composition of Japanese PLWH. Methods PLWH who visited the outpatient clinic and had body composition measured using the body composition analyzer InBody 570 were included in this study. Medications, comorbidities, and blood test data were obtained. Body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) were measured. Results In this study, 543 patients were included. Based on body shape, patients were classified into a thin group (13), normal weight group (14), hidden obesity group (158), apparent obesity group (14), and obesity group (218). Compared with the normal weight group, the hidden obesity group had a higher prevalence of comorbidities and a lower SMI. Conclusions PLWH are more likely to have obesity than the general population, indicating that hidden obesity is common even among those with a normal BMI. It is important to measure body fat percentage along with body weight, as hidden obesity can be missed. Further investigation of the effects of ART on body composition is needed.

Abstract: The area offshore of Minamitorishima Island, Northwestern Pacific Ocean, contains large amounts of seafloor mineral resources such as ferromanganese (Fe–Mn) nodules, Fe–Mn crusts, and rare-earth element and yttrium (REY)-rich muds. In this study, we applied stratigraphic Os isotopic dating to a Fe–Mn nodule for the first time to date its formation/depositional age, and mineralogical and texturally characterized a complementary nodule. Based on macroscopic and microscopic observations, the studied Fe–Mn nodules can be divided into three layers: Layers L2, L1, and L0 from core to rim. Under the microscope, the Fe–Mn nodules are dominated by vernadite and Fe-oxyhydroxide. In particular, Layer L1 is dominated by banded-columnar vernadite and contains lower amounts of clay minerals derived from the detrital component than Layers L2 and L0. The bulk major and trace element geochemical compositions of sampled layers in the Fe–Mn nodules all plotted in the hydrogenous field in several discrimination diagrams. The Os isotopic ages determined by fitting to the paleo-seawater 187Os/188Os curve can be divided into three clusters (35.7–31.0, 19.0–9.0, and 4.0–1.0 Ma, corresponding to Layers L2, L1, and L0, respectively). These Os isotopic ages indicate that two periods of very slow growth or growth hiatuses occurred during the formation of the Fe–Mn nodule; these age gaps are related to the intermittent (discontinuous) timings of the beginning of Fe–Mn nodule formation offshore Minamitorishima Island.

4. Investigation of a Nonlinear XNOR Logic Gate Based on an Induced Nonlinear Phase Shift of Spin Waves

Abstract: Introduction. Recent years have seen a growing interest in studying the nonlinear properties of spin waves. Nonlinear phenomena, such as envelope solitons, nonlinear frequency shifts of intense spin waves, and etc., have attracted particular attention. However, a number of important issues remain to be underexplored, including the problem of induced nonlinear phase shift of spin waves. The relevance of this problem is related to the need to develop spin-wave logic gates that could be controlled by changing the spin wave phase.Aim. To study a nonlinear XNOR logic gate whose operation is based on the induced nonlinear phase shift of a spin wave.Materials and methods. An original theory is used to simulate the frequency response of a nonlinear XNOR logic gate. The operating principle of the nonlinear XNOR logic gate is substantiated. The possibility of implementing the nonlinear XNOR logic gate in a circuit similar to a spin-wave Mach-Zehnder interferometer is experimentally demonstrated.Results. An experimental study of the induced nonlinear phase shift of operating signals incident on identical nonlinear spin-wave phase shifters located in the arms of the logic gate was carried out. It is shown that an increase in the pump signal power up to 60 mW, supplied to nonlinear phase shifters, changes the induced nonlinear phase shift of the operating signal by more than 180°. Hence, nonlinear phase shifters can be used for constructing spin-wave logic gates. In addition, the operating principle of a spin-wave logic gate was experimentally studied. It is shown that the XNOR logical function is implemented in the low-frequency part of the device’s frequency response characteristic.Conclusion. Numerical simulation of the characteristics of a nonlinear XNOR logic gate based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer circuit was carried out. It is shown that its logical functions are implemented due to the effect of an induced nonlinear phase shift of spin waves in nonlinear phase shifters located in different arms of the logic gate.

Abstract: Supported by the world magnetic fusion research community, a series of International Symposia on Liquid metals Applications for fusion (ISLA) have been held biannually since 2010. The 7th edition (ISLA-7) was held for the period from 12 December through 16 December 2022, at Chubu University located in Kasugai, Aichi, Japan. For the first time in the history of this series of symposia, ISLA-7 was held in a hybrid fashion, due to the COVID-19 situation. The total number of the participants was 60, 34 out of whom attended the symposium in person, and the rest participated online. As to the presentation statistics, 29 papers were presented in person, whereas 21 presentations were delivered online but real-time by the presenters in China, Spain, the UK, and the USA. Both of the presentations delivered in person and online were recorded, and the video has been shared by all participants. These participants represent 11 countries: China, Czech, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Netherlands, Russia, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. All these numbers are among the largest in this series of symposia. Covered by these presentations are; in session-2, program overviews and liquid metal research review; in session-3, liquid metal flows, and MHD issues; in session-4, liquid metal facilities; in sessions-5 and 6, liquid metal experiments and modeling; in session-7, divertor physics and heat flux mitigation; in session-8, plasma and liquid metals interactions; in session-9 liquid metal plasma-facing components, erosion, and wettability. In addition, there were an opening session whereby several opening addresses were delivered and also a closing session where all technical session summaries were presented by the respective session chairs.

Abstract: The transverse acoustic wave propagating along the [100] axis of the cubic Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ (acoustic $c_{44}$ mode) is doubly degenerate. A magnetic field applied in the direction of propagation lifts this degeneracy and leads to the rotation of the polarization vector - the magneto-acoustic Faraday rotation. Here, we report on the observation and analysis of the magneto-acoustic Faraday-effect in Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ in static and pulsed magnetic fields. We present also a theoretical model based on magnetoelastic coupling of 4$f$ electrons to both, acoustic and optical phonons and an effective coupling between them. This model explains the observed linear frequency dependence of the Faraday rotation angle.

8. Interfacial phenomena associated with Li electrodeposition on liquid Ga substrates in propylene carbonate

Abstract: Li electrodeposition on liquid Ga substrates was carried out in PC-LiClO4 at 40 °C. It was found that interfacial flow phenomena were induced by differences in interfacial tension between the liquid Ga and the liquid Ga-Li alloy formed on the substrate under potentiostatic electrolysis at −1.0 V (vs. Li+/Li), which caused the interfacial shape change of the liquid Ga electrode. We carried out in-situ observations in order to understand why such interfacial phenomena occur between the liquid electrolyte and the liquid metal cathode. Moreover, a significant difference in electrochemical response between liquid and solid Ga substrates was also noticed employing the current-time transient technique. These experimental results suggest that the process of liquid Ga-Li phase formation by the dissolution of electrodeposited Li atoms into the liquid Ga substrate dominated during the initial stage of Li electrodeposition. In contrast, the typical peaks induced by growth of solid Ga-Li alloy phase and Li metal phase were observed on solid Ga substrates. These results provide new insight into the design of electrochemical processing involving liquid electrolyte/liquid metal interface. 9. Electrochemical Cs removal and crystal formation from Fukushima weathered biotite in molten NaCl-CaCl2

Abstract: The possibility of removal and controlling crystal formation from weathered biotite (WB) in clay minerals were investigated using molten salt electrochemistry (EC) in molten NaCl-CaCl2 under an electrochemical reductive reaction. Cyclic Voltammogram (CV) measurements were performed in the range of +0.5 V to −2.2 V. Several peaks were confirmed in the CV spectra. The peak at −1.4 V represents a reduction reaction of Fe in WB, so we conducted an experiment at −1.4 V for 2 h to reduce Iron (Fe). The Cs removal rate after EC treatment was determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis, and almost 100% Cs removal was confirmed. To understand the effect of the reductive reaction, we performed X-ray Adsorption Fine Structure (XAFS) analysis. Before EC treatment, the Fe in WB was present as a mixture of Fe3+ and Fe2+. After EC treatment, the presence of Fe2+ was confirmed by XAFS analysis. Based on this finding, EC treatment is effective for reducing Fe in WB. This result indicated that Fe2O3 formation was suppressed, and the reduction reaction was effective for controlling crystal formation.

10. Phylogenetic Review of Acaulospora (Diversisporales, Glomeromycota) and the Homoplasic Nature of Its Ornamentations

Abstract: The genus Acaulospora has undergone many updates since it was first described; however, there are some missing pieces in the phylogenetic relationships among Acaulospora species. The present review aimed to: (i) understand the evolutionary meaning of their different spore wall ornamentations; (ii) define the best molecular marker for phylogenetic inferences, (iii) address some specific issues concerning the polyphyletic nature of Acaulospora lacunosa and Acaulospora scrobiculata, and the inclusion of Kuklospora species; and (iv) update the global geographical distribution of Acaulospora species. As such, the wall ornamentation of previously described Acaulospora species was reviewed and phylogenetic analyses were carried out based on ITS and SSU-ITS-LSU (nrDNA). Moreover, the already available type material of A. sporocarpia was inspected. According to the data obtained, temperate and tropical zones are the richest in Acaulospora species. We also confirmed that A. sporocarpia does not belong to Acaulospora. Furthermore, our phylogeny supported the monophyly of Acaulospora genus, including the Kuklospora species, K. colombiana and K. kentinensis. The nrDNA phylogeny presented the best resolution and revealed the homoplasic nature of many ornamentations in Acaulospora species, pointing out their unfeasible phylogenetic signal. This review reinforces the urgency of more molecular markers, in addition to the nrDNA sequences, for the definition of a multi-locus phylogeny.

Abstract: This study evaluates spatial variations in zooplankton community structure and potential controlling factors along the Japanese coast under the influence of the coastal branch of the Tsushima Warm Current (CBTWC). Variations in the density of morphologically identified zooplankton in the surface layer in May were investigated for a 15-year period. The density of zooplankton (individuals per cubic meter) varied between sampling stations, but there was no consistent west–east trend. Instead, there were different zooplankton community structures in the west and east, with that in Toyama Bay particularly distinct: Corycaeus affinis and Calanus sinicus were dominant in the west and Oithona atlantica was dominant in Toyama Bay. Abstract: The home-field advantage (HFA) hypothesis establishes that plant litter decomposes faster at ‘home’ sites than in ‘away’ sites due to more specialized decomposers acting at home sites. This hypothesis has predominantly been tested through ‘yes or no’ transplanting experiments, where the litter decomposition of a focal species is quantified near and away from their conspecifics. Herein, we evaluated the occurrence and magnitude of home-field effects on the leaf litter decomposition of Myrcia ramuliflora (O.Berg) N. Silveira (Myrtaceae) along a natural gradient of conspecific litterfall input and also if home-field effects are affected by litter and soil traits. Litter decomposition of M. ramuliflora was assessed through litterbags placed in 39 plots in a tropical heath vegetation over a period of 12 months. We also characterized abiotic factors, litter layer traits, and litter diversity. Our results indicated the occurrence of positive (i.e. Home-field advantage) and negative (i.e. Home-field disadvantage) effects in more than half of the plots. Positive and negative effects occurred in a similar frequency and magnitude. Among all predictors tested, only the community weighted mean C/N ratio of the litterfall input was associated with home-field effects. Our results reinforce the lack of generality for home-field effects found in the literature and thus challenge the understanding of litter-decomposer interaction in tropical ecosystems.

This work aimed at studying the impact of conventional and organic cotton production in the AMF of western Bahia. Soil samples were obtained from conventional white cotton and colored cotton organic production systems as well as from native Cerrado areas, close to the white cotton fields, and from the subcaducifolia vegetation, close to the organic colored cotton farms. The most frequent species in the conventional farming areas belonged to the genera Acaulospora (10 spp.); Glomus (8 spp.); Dentiscutata (3 spp.); Ambispora, Pacispora and Scutellospora (2 spp. each), as well as Claroideoglomus etunicatum, Diversispora sp., Entrophospora infrequens, Gigaspora sp., Orbispora pernambucana, Paradentiscutata maritima, and Paraglomus occultum. Eighteen species were found in the organic farming areas, with the predominance of Glomus (5 spp.) and Acaulospora (5 spp.), and with Claroideoglomus, Dentiscutata, Gigaspora, Corymbiglomus, Orbispora, Paraglomus, Scutellospora, and Simiglomus (1 spp. each). Paraglomus bolivianum was first reported in Cerrado. In the native vegetation, nine species were found, with the predominance of Glomus and Acaulospora. The highest number of AMF species was found in the organic farming areas, which deserves further investigation.

17. Development of steady-state fusion reactor by Helical Fusion

Abstract: The Helical Fusion group (Helical Fusion Co., Ltd. in Japan and Helical Fusion USA, Inc.) is developing a 50 MWe-class steady-state helical fusion reactor, which is a kind of stellarator called heliotron composed of two continuous helical coils similar to the large helical device and is operated without plasma current. HESTIA plays the role of the fusion pilot plant. The first-of-a-kind fusion power plant that would follow HESTIA will be a 100 MWe-class steady-state helical fusion reactor. After more than one year of continuous operation, maintenance will be completed within 3 months, aiming for an availability larger than 80%. High-temperature superconducting magnet coils are adopted to generate 8 T of the magnetic field at the helical coil center. HESTIA is a deuterium-tritium fusion reactor, where tritium is self-produced using liquid metal blanket systems. The first wall of the liquid metal blanket including the divertor strike zone is covered and protected by liquid metal free-surface flow, and therefore, individual divertor systems are not required in HESTIA. Electron cyclotron heating is adopted for plasma heating. Since plasma current drive is not required, HESTIA can be operated at a low fusion gain of ∼13, and steady-state operation is principally possible on the order of a year. After a few years of individual development phases, a prototype device is planned to be constructed and operated for the integrated demonstration before starting the construction of HESTIA.

The full paper will be online soon at the same website as GAR2022] The rapidly changing socio-economic landscape of the Southeast Asian countries is an important driver for systemic risks such as climate change and hydro-geological disasters.Global processes such as the SFDRR, the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) encourage cross-sectoral coordination and integration of strategies to address the emerging disaster and climate change risks. A similar emphasis on integration and coordination between DRR and CCA can be found in various regional and national processes in the ASEAN. The region has put in place far-reaching disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation plans, laws, and regulations at both regional and national levels, and progressing to localize them to sectoral and community levels. One important element that countries needed to make significant progress on is in integrating climate change projections into disaster risk assessments to help address future systemic risks. The above needs are captured in this project and have produced guidelines for practitioners and policymakers to incorporate climate change projections into flood and landslide risk assessments based on pilot exercises carried out in Lao PDR and Myanmar. The systemic risks associated with floods and landslides were assessed using a multi-stakeholder consultation process, and community engagement at the river basin level in combination with dynamic simulation models and tools for assessing systemic risks.

Abstract: Yb2Si2O7 is a popular environmental barrier coating; however, it decomposes into Yb2SiO5 in high-temperature steam environments. The thermal mismatch between Yb2Si2O7 and Yb2SiO5 leads to the cracking and failure of the disilicate coating via oxidation. Dispersing SiC nanofillers into the Yb2Si2O7 matrix is suggested to maintain the Yb2Si2O7 matrix and promote crack self-healing. This study is aimed at clarifying the effect of water vapor on the self-healing ability of such composites. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy were used to monitor the surface composition and the crack formation, respectively, in 10 vol% SiC-dispersed Yb2Si2O7 composites. Annealing at temperatures higher than 750 °C in air or in a water vapor rich atmosphere led to strength recovery and the self-healing of indentation-induced surface cracks owing to volume expansion during the oxidation of SiC. The self-healing effect was influenced by the oxidation time and temperature. Rapid diffusion of H2O as an oxidizer into the SiO2 layer promoted self-healing in a water vapor rich atmosphere. However, accelerated oxidation at temperatures higher than 1150 °C formed bubbles on the surface. Fabricating composites with a small amount of Yb2SiO5 will be a solution to these problems.

Abstract: In this contribution we review the possibility of establishing the depositional age and tectonic settings of metamorphosed carbonate rocks from continental collision zones in the East African-Antarctic Orogen. The geochemical characteristics of regionally distributed meta-carbonate rocks from the Highland Complex (HC) in Sri Lanka are considered in detail and compared with similar occurrences in East Antarctica, India, Madagascar and Africa. The variations seen in the Highland Complex of Sri Lanka imply that carbonate deposition was younging from west to east, spanning apparent ages from Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic. In the case of East Antarctica, such variations are within the Neoproterozoic, whereas in southern India, Madagascar and Mozambique they have a broader age range possibly from the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic. There is also clear evidence that some carbonates were deposited in an open ocean surrounding volcanic islands in the Mesoproterozoic. Shale-normalized REE patterns have typical signatures of open ocean deposition in a passive continental margin with variable continental input in platforms nearby to island arcs. In comparison to Phanerozoic equivalents, the absence of a Ce anomaly is most significant, whereas other parameters such as (Pr/Yb)SN, (Pr/Tb)SN, and (Tb/Yb)SN were used to evaluate relative enrichments of the LREE, MREE and HREE fractions that are characteristic of ambient seawater. Pronounced La, and Y anomalies with minor Eu and Gd anomalies and correlations of REE parameters and anomalies with carbon and oxygen isotopes, 87Sr/86Sr initial ratios and eNd values are evaluated for meta-carbonate rocks in the Proterozoic collision zone. The eNd values and Sr initial ratios suggest that basins in the western Mozambique Ocean that separated the East Gondwana from West Gondwana received contributions from Archean continental crust and ambient seawater, whereas the eastern Mozambique Ocean had REE contributions from specific cratonic continents in passive margins or from continental/volcanic island arcs in active margins.

Abstract: Recent researches have indicated coupling between volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Some of them calculated static stress transfer in subsurface induced by the occurrences of earthquakes. Most of their analyses ignored the spatial heterogeneity in subsurface, or only took into account the rigidity layering in the crust. On the other hand, a smaller scale heterogeneity of around hundreds of meters has been suggested by geophysical investigations. It is difficult to reflect that kind of heterogeneity in analysis models because accurate distributions of fluctuation are not well understood in many cases. Thus, the effect of the ignorance of the smaller scale heterogeneity on evaluating the earthquake triggering of volcanic eruptions is also not well understood. In the present study, we investigate the influence of the assumption of homogeneity on evaluating earthquake triggering of volcanic eruptions using finite element simulations. The crust is treated as a stochastic media with different heterogeneous parameters (correlation length and magnitude of velocity perturbation) in our simulations. We adopt exponential and von Karman functions as spatial auto-correlation functions (ACF). In all our simulation results, the ignorance of the smaller scale heterogeneity leads to underestimation of the failure pressure around a chamber wall, which relates to dyke initiation. The magnitude of the velocity perturbation has a larger effect on the tensile failure at the chamber wall than the difference of the ACF and the correlation length. The maximum effect on the failure pressure in all our simulations is about twice larger than that in the homogeneous case. This indicates that the estimation of the earthquake triggering due to static stress transfer should take account of the heterogeneity of around hundreds of meters.

Abstract: (Pr1−yMy)1−xCaxCoO3 epitaxial films (M=Y, Gd) have been successfully fabricated by pulsed laser deposition on the single crystal substrates with different lattice constant. The polycrystalline bulk of this material shows a first-order metal-insulator (MI) transition below the critical temperature. Although ρ(T) of all the as-grown films shows a semiconducting behavior at entire temperature range, an anomalous ρ(T) upturn with wide hysteresis can be clearly seen for the film grown on the SrLaAlO4 (SLAO) substrate, which applied the in-plane compressive stress to the film. Such anomaly in ρ(T) is interpreted as a sign of the first-order phase transition related with the spin-state (SS) transition, which was observed in the polycrystalline bulk.

Abstract: We investigate the infrared colours and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 338 X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 105-month survey catalogue, which have been detected using AKARI, in order to find new selection criteria for Compton-thick AGNs. By combining data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 14 (DR14), the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), AKARI and Herschel for the first time, we perform ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared (FIR) SEDs, fitting 158 Swift/BAT AGNs using cigale and constraining the AGN model parameters of obscured and Compton-thick AGNs. The comparison of average SEDs shows that while the mid-infrared (MIR) SEDs are similar for the three AGN populations, the optical/UV and FIR regions have differences. We measure the dust luminosity, the pure AGN luminosity and the total infrared luminosity. We examine the relationships between the measured infrared luminosities and the hard X-ray luminosity in the 14–195 keV band. We show that the average covering factor of Compton-thick AGNs is higher compared with the obscured and unobscured AGNs. We present new infrared selection criteria for Compton-thick AGNs based on MIR and FIR colours ([9–22 μm] > 3.0 and [22–90 μm] < 2.7) from WISE and AKARI. We find two known Compton-thick AGNs that are not included in the Swift/BAT sample. We conclude that MIR colours covering 9.7-μm silicate absorption and the MIR continuum could be promising new tools to identify Compton-thick AGNs.

Abstract: Enfolding Silence is a sociological study of how Japanese Americans have developed various art forms to cope with, resist, and transform traumatic experiences of racism, including the mass, unlawful internment of nearly 120,000 people of Japanese descent during World War II. By examining an extended ethnographic case study, educators and students can reflect on how a community teaches aesthetically across generations, as one generation traumatized by racism teaches what matters culturally, aesthetically, and spiritually to the next. The author (Brett J. Esaki) analyzes four Japanese American art forms—gardening, origami, jazz, and monuments—in terms of what he calls “non-binary silence.” Esaki uses the metaphor of silence as a tool to enable readers to grasp the complexity of Japanese American art, showing how art has facilitated one community to be and become more authentic and whole in the face of adversity. For scholars and students of aesthetic education, this volume raises awareness of assumptions about silence and space, as it expands preconceived, common notions of these terms. It fosters appreciation for the pedagogic richness of art forms that are familiar to many, placing them in historical, religious, cultural, and political perspective. Finally, the book illumines the role of art in resisting oppression, providing rich cases that can be mined for implications for aesthetic education.

Abstract: This article provides an outline of the classification of the kingdom Fungi (including fossil fungi. i.e. dispersed spores, mycelia, sporophores, mycorrhizas). We treat 19 phyla of fungi. These are Aphelidiomycota, Ascomycota, Basidiobolomycota, Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Calcarisporiellomycota, Caulochytriomycota, Chytridiomycota, Entomophthoromycota, Entorrhizomycota, Glomeromycota, Kickxellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Mortierellomycota, Mucoromycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Olpidiomycota, Rozellomycota and Zoopagomycota. The placement of all fungal genera is provided at the class-, order- and family-level. The described number of species per genus is also given. Notes are provided of taxa for which recent changes or disagreements have been presented. Fungus-like taxa that were traditionally treated as fungi are also incorporated in this outline (i.e. Eumycetozoa, Dictyosteliomycetes, Ceratiomyxomycetes and Myxomycetes). Four new taxa are introduced: Amblyosporida ord. nov. Neopereziida ord. nov. and Ovavesiculida ord. nov. in Rozellomycota, and Protosporangiaceae fam. nov. in Dictyosteliomycetes. Two different classifications (in outline section and in discussion) are provided for Glomeromycota and Leotiomycetes based on recent studies. 32. Reduced Autophagy in Aged Trigeminal Neurons Causes Amyloid β Diffusion

Abstract: The relationship between oral health and the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the elderly is not yet well understood. In this regard, the association between aging or neurodegeneration of the trigeminal nervous system and the accumulation of amyloid-β(1–42) (Aβ42) oligomers in the pathogenesis of AD is unknown. We focused on selective autophagy in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) and the diffusion of Aβ42 oligomers with respect to aging of the trigeminal nervous system and whether the degeneration of Vmes neurons affects the diffusion of Aβ42 oligomers. We used female 2- to 8-mo-old transgenic 3xTg-AD mice and App NL-G-F knock-in mice and immunohistochemically examined aging-related changes in selective autophagy and Aβ42 oligomer processing in the Vmes, which exhibits high amyloid-β (Aβ) expression. We induced degeneration of Vmes neurons by extracting the maxillary molars and examined the changes in Aβ42 oligomer kinetics. Autophagosome-like membranes, which stained positive for Aβ, HO-1, and LC3B, were observed in Vmes neurons of 3xTg-AD mice, while there was weak immunoreactivity of the membranes for intraneuronal Aβ in App NL-G-F mice. By contrast, there was strong immunopositivity for extracellular Aβ42 oligomers with the formation of Aβ42 oligomer clusters in App NL-G-F mice. The expression of Rubicon, which indicates age-related deterioration of autophagy, increased the diffusion of Aβ42 oligomer with the age of Vmes neurons. Tooth extraction increased the extracellular immunopositivity for Aβ42 oligomers in App NL-G-F mice. These results suggest that autophagy maintains homeostasis in Vmes neurons and that deterioration of autophagy due to aging or neurodegeneration leads to the diffusion of Aβ42 oligomers into the extracellular space and possibly the development of AD.

Abstract: An 83-year-old woman was referred to our emergency department with acute urticaria and sudden shortness of breath approximately 30 min after taking rectal diclofenac potassium for lumbago. After treatment with adrenaline and corticosteroids, the patient became hemodynamically stable and left the hospital on the next day. She attended our hospital 1 week after the onset of anaphylaxis because of repeated postprandial epigastric pain. No abnormal lesions were found in endoscopy. Radiographic selective catheter angiography revealed chronic mesenteric ischemia caused by atherosclerosis and abundant collateral arteries between the celiac trunk, the superior mesenteric artery and the inferior mesenteric artery. Patients with chronic mesenteric ischemia usually present with a clinical syndrome characterized by painful abdominal cramps and colic occurring typically during the postprandial phase. Fear of eating resulted in malnutrition. She was prescribed proton pump inhibitor, digestants, anticholinergic agents, serine protease inhibitors, prokinetics, antiplatelet agents and transdermal nitroglycerin intermittently, but these had no beneficial effects. It was most probable that this patient with chronic atherosclerotic mesenteric ischemia was suffering from functional abdominal pain syndrome induced by anaphylaxis. Since psychiatric disorders were associated with alterations in the processing of visceral sensation, we facilitated the patient’s understanding of functional abdominal pain syndrome with the psychologist. Postprandial abdominal pain gradually faded after administration of these drugs and the patient left the hospital. Developing a satisfactory patient-physician relationship was considered more effective for the management of persistent abdominal pain caused by complicated mechanisms.

35. Who is the 'public' when you make teaching public? Conceptions of audience in the scholarship of teaching and learning

Abstract: This article considers how SoTL practitioners have addressed three types of audiences: personal, administrative, and discipline-based. The analysis draws on narrative data from a collaborative SoTL project at a community college. The findings are discussed in relation to broader trends across institutions and disciplines. It is argued that investigators should take into account the audience’s epistemology of teaching. This approach helps investigators to enter into the professional discourse of that audience. Five strategies are offered to help SoTL practitioners communicate effectively with audiences outside of their professional area.

Abstract: 5α-Cyprinol sulfate was isolated from bile of the Asiatic carp, Cyprinus carpio. 5α-Cyprinol sulfate was surface active and formed micelles; its critical micellization concentration (CMC) in 0.15 M Na+ using the maximum bubble pressure device was 1.5 mM; by dye solubilization, its CMC was ∼4 mM. At concentrations >1 mM, 5α-cyprinol sulfate solubilized monooleylglycerol efficiently (2.1 molecules per mol micellar bile salt). When infused intravenously into the anesthetized rat, 5α-cyprinol sulfate was hemolytic, cholestatic, and toxic. In the isolated rat liver, it underwent little biotransformation and was poorly transported (Tmax ≅ 0.5 μmol/min/kg) as compared with taurocholate. 5α-Cyprinol, its bile alcohol moiety, was oxidized to its corresponding C27 bile acid and to allocholic acid (the latter was then conjugated with taurine); these metabolites were efficiently transported. 5α-Cyprinol sulfate inhibited taurocholate uptake in COS-7 cells transfected with rat asbt, the apical bile salt transporter of the ileal enterocyte. 5α-Cyprinol had limited aqueous solubility (0.3 mM) and was poorly absorbed from the perfused rat jejunum or ileum. Sampling of carp intestinal content indicated that 5α-cyprinol sulfate was present at micellar concentrations, and that it did not undergo hydrolysis during intestinal transit.These studies indicate that 5α-cyprinol sulfate is an excellent digestive detergent and suggest that a micellar phase is present during digestion in cyprinid fish.

Abstract: The internal structure of heat insulator materials, which were built by mixing micrometer-size α-alumina with nanometer-size fumed alumina though changing their mixture ratios, was inspected using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) tomography and synchrotron radiation nano-tomography. The heat insulator samples formed by two kinds of alumina phase have high porosity that consist of hierarchical structures of nanometer and micrometer size. From TEM observation, it is found that the porosity was 90.7% in the aggregate of fumed alumina with an average particle diameter of 35 nm whilst the average pore size was 70–80 nm. From observation of synchrotron radiation nano-tomography, it is found that α-alumina particles distribute homogeneously in samples that have fumed alumina phase of more than 50 mass%. The effect of internal microstructure on heat insulator properties were considered by performing a simple heat transfer simulation using image based models prepared from synchrotron radiation nano-tomography images. Similar changes in heat transfer with the experiment were obtained by the simulation. Therefore, it is suggested that the change of heat transfer depending on a mixture ratio of α-alumina and fumed alumina is mainly caused by the internal microstructure, that is, the distribution and connectivity of α-alumina phase within fumed alumina phase.

Abstract: Background Blood pressure (BP) variability has reportedly been a risk factor for various clinical events. To clarify the influence of BP visit‐to‐visit variability on adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, a post hoc analysis of the J‐RHYTHM Registry was performed. Methods and Results Of 7406 outpatients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation from 158 institutions, 7226 (age, 69.7±9.9 years; men, 70.7%), in whom BP was measured 4 times or more (14.6±5.0 times) during the 2‐year follow‐up period or until occurrence of an event, constituted the study group. SD and coefficient of variation of BP values were calculated as BP variability. Thromboembolism, major hemorrhage, and all‐cause death occurred in 110 (1.5%), 121 (1.7%), and 168 (2.3%) patients, respectively. When patients were divided into quartiles of systolic BP‐SD (P =0.015 for thromboembolism; HR, 2.60, 95% CI, 1.36–4.97, P =0.004 for major hemorrhage; and HR, 1.85, 95% CI, 1.11–3.07, P =0.018 for all‐cause death) after adjusting for components of the CHA 2 DS 2 ‐VASc score, warfarin and antiplatelet use, atrial fibrillation type, BP measurement times, and others. These findings were consistent when BP‐coefficient of variation was used instead of BP‐SD. Conclusions Systolic BP visit‐to‐visit variability was significantly associated with all adverse events in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Further studies are needed to clarify the causality between BP variability and adverse outcomes in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.
