15. Geographical variation in cone traits of Pinus nigra as result of crossbill predation: implications for assisted migration.

Abstract

The interaction between Spanish Black pine (Pinus nigra subsp. salzmannii) and common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) could have resulted in a geographic mosaic of coevolution in the Iberian Peninsula. In turn, this coevolutionary interaction might limit the future applicability of assisted migration as a tool to adapt forests of Spanish Black pine to ongoing climate change. Several cone and seed traits were measured in 740 cones collected at six stands distributed across the range of Spanish Black pine. Data were analysed by means of linear-mixed effects models, canonical analysis of principal coordinates and random-forest analysis. Results showed that cones from the northern pine populations exhibited more defensive traits against crossbill predation than cones from the central and southern populations, resulting in a geographic mosaic of selection. Assisted migration of P. nigra would involve moving southern populations toward the north of the species' range and would result in introducing the genotypes of pines with poorly defended cones into areas where crossbills are comparatively more abundant. Abstract

Seed size and germination time are related to factors affecting natural regeneration of forest stands. Sources of seed mass variation and the effect of seed mass on seedling performance were investigated in a Pinus nigra subsp. salzmannii population. From eight maternal plants, seed mass variation was characterized for two crops at the within-individual level by mean, coefficient of variation, skewness and kurtosis values. Fifty seeds were planted in each of two substrate types, to monitor emergence, and survival and seedling performance during one growing season. Most variation in seed mass occurred within trees (c. 61%), rather than between them (c. 39%). Seed mass influenced emergence, depending on substrate type and mother plant. There were between-tree differences in the date of emergence, and a negative relationship was found between seed mass and date of emergence for the pine-seeds sown in peat substrate. The growth of seedlings was positively related to seed mass. It was argued that successful establishment of seedlings appears to be dependent on mother plant identity associated to seed traits, and that Pinus nigra stands could achieve regeneration by two different alternatives, depending on whether environmental variance overwhelms genetic variation., La variación del peso de las semillas y la relación entre el peso de las semillas y el crecimiento de las plántulas se investigaron en una población de Pinus nigra subsp. salzmannii. La variación del peso se analizó en dos cosechas recogidas en ocho árboles, utilizando los valores medios, y los coeficientes de variación, simetría y kurtosis. La variación dentro de los árboles fue del 61% y entre los árboles del 39%. Dos muestras de 50 piñones se sembraron en sendos tipos de sustrato para seguir la emergencia, la supervivencia y el crecimiento de las plántulas durante un período vegetativo. El peso de la semillas influyó en la emergencia, dependiendo del tipo de substrato y de la planta madre. Hubo diferencias entre árboles en la fecha de emergencia, que se correlacionó negativamente con el peso de las semillas sembradas en turba. El crecimiento de las plántulas sí se correlacionó positivamente con el peso de los piñones. Se concluyó que el establecimiento de las plántulas depende de la identidad de la planta madre concomitantemente con el peso de las semillas, y que la regeneración natural de Pinus nigra podría conseguirse mediante dos estrategias dependiendo de si la variabilidad ambiental supera la genética o no.

Abstract

The structural attributes of an old-growthforest remnantof Pinus nigra subsp. salzmannii located in southern Spain and those from nearby managed forests were compared. Dataon environmental and structural variables were collected in 74 forest inventory plots. Significant differences were tested by means of the Mann-Whitney U-test. A partial redundancy analysis was conducted to assess the relative contribution of both environmental and management variables in explaining differences in the current structure of old-growth and managed stands. Additionally, 25 trees of different size (range 25.4-98 cm) and age (67-803 years) were cored and dendrochronological methods and bootstrap linear regression were used to study the effects of size and age on tree growth. The oldgrowth stand exhibited a higher density of large trees (diameter at breast height .50 cm) and greater variability in tree size than managed stands, but lower tree density and, consequently, similar values of stand basal area and volume. Environmental variables accounted for 5.7 per cent of the total variance observed in structural attributes, while the contrasting silvicultural condition (old-growth vs managed) accounted for 10.2 per cent. Abstract

Tree recruitment is a key process underlying stand dynamics and sustainability in managed forests. Woody plant cover is known to affect the regeneration success of Pinus nigra, suggesting the existence of facilitative plant-plant interactions. The regeneration patterns of this Mediterranean pine were analyzed across its distribution area, using data from 3226 plots of the Spanish National Forest Inventory. We aimed to test the hypothesis that seedlings establishment occurs under higher values of either canopy or shrub cover in the driest populations, as predicted by the stress-gradient hypothesis. Data were analyzed by means of Generalized Linear Models and multivariate methods. Results revealed that regeneration failure occurs on a regional scale, and that regeneration is facilitated by tree canopy cover of 55%-80%. A non-linear pattern of interaction along an aridity gradient was identified, with competition at the wettest site, high facilitation at the mid-dry sites, and low facilitation at the driest site. Evidence suggests that some shrub species may facilitate recruitment in the harsher areas. Collectively, our results reduce the possibilities of adapting forest management to drying climates by the application of alternative silvicultural prescriptions involving canopy cover.
