Abstract

The Tuz Golu Fault Zone (TGFZ) is one of the most important active tectonic regimes of Central Anatolia. The morphotectonic features of the TGFZ and the distribution of the epicenters of earthquakes over magnitude 5.0 show that this fault zone remains active today. In this study, the deformation of the TGFZ is determined with high sensitivity using geodetic measurements. To obtain accurate information about the deformation of the TGFZ, 24 GNSS sites and two continuously operating reference stations were constructed in the southern part of the TGFZ. Between 2018 and 2020, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) measurements were made on this network. The data of the Turkish National Fundamental GPS Network (TNFGN) and the continuously operating reference stations-Turkey (CORS-TR) sites around the study area were also included in the study, and GNSS measurements were evaluated with the GAMIT/GLOBK software, and velocity fields of the region were determined. In addition, block modeling of the study area was calculated using the GeodSuit software. For the first time, slip rates provided by the geodetic network are established directly on the TGFZ segments, filling a significant deficiency in the literature, contributing to understanding the tectonics of the country and the region, and providing an important dataset for evaluating the degree of seismic activity of the fault zone. The slip rates obtained within the scope of this study are approximately 1.8 mm/yr strike-slip and 2 mm/yr dip-slip for the Acipinar and Helvadere segments on that Aksaray city is built on. Abstract

After the 1999 Izmit and Düzce earthquakes, the earth science studies increase on the NAF to better understand mechanism and to monitor the motion of it. Monitoring such motion can be achieved by the instrumental tools or techniques like GPS, InSAR, LIDAR, creep meter, etc. The GPS observations showed that while the NW-SE trending section of the NAF between Karlıova and Vezirköprü has nearly strike slip mechanism, the NE-SW trending section of the NAF between Vezirköprü and Bolu has transpressive character. While the fault-parallel velocities have been estimated from just a few GPS vectors available in the region, little is known about the fault-perpendicular component of the regional velocity. The rate of conversion and how it varies along strike are not known due to the sparsely distributed GPS benchmarks in the region. At the same time, the aseismic fault creep determined using InSAR has needed to proof and improve by other techniques and tools. For this propose the new project has been started to determine quantitatively the rate of convergence and its variation along segment of the NAF between Bolu and Çorum. In this study, we focus on the Bolu-Çorum segment of the NAFZ using GPS technique. The main aim of this study is determination of creep rate with geodetic measurements and combination of the data obtained from seismology, geodesy and geophysics to understand fault mechanism. Therefore, in this paper we discuss tectonic phenomena on the central part of the NAFZ and present the first results of the project

Abstract

Recent earthquakes on the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) and its surroundings in the Eastern Mediterranean region reveal a potential seismic hazard. It is thus needed to constrain deformations within tectonically active zones and clarify kinematics of the triple junction near Adana, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Gaziantep provinces. To understand strain accumulations and interseismic patterns of these active zones, one of the most popular geodetic methods was applied. Slip rates derived from Global Positioning System (GPS) observations by half-space modeling lead us to predict possible magnitudes and even probable locations of future destructive earthquakes. In this context, we form a region-specific GPS network consisting of both campaign observation sites and permanent stations to monitor strain accumulations across major active faults and investigate fault kinematics in detail. The campaign GPS data sets acquired in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2019 were merged with data from different local permanent GPS networks for an integrated analysis of the determination of recent tectonic deformations. The TDEFNODE software was used to construct a kinematic model in an elastic and homogeneous half-space. The modeling approach needs inputs such as block and fault geometries, GPS site velocities, and locking depth assumptions. Our kinematic model indicates that an almost purely sinistral strike-slip rate of 7.5 mm/yr without any significant normal or reverse component is dominant on the main branch of the EAFZ. This estimated slip rate supports a prediction for a magnitude margin of 7.2–7.6 for the next probable large earthquake on the Turkoglu–Golbasi segment. The Karatas–Osmaniye Fault has a 3.4 mm/yr dextral strike-slip rate together with a reverse-slip rate of 3.1 mm/yr, which corresponds to a possible magnitude of 6.8–7.1 for an earthquake on the southwest end of the East Anatolian Fault. The Karasu Fault extends from the Turkoglu Triple Junction on the EAFZ in the north to the Hatay Triple Junction in the south. This critical fault segment has a sinistral 4.4–5.4 mm/yr slip rate with a normal component slip rate of 3.0 mm/yr, supporting earthquake prediction with a possible magnitude of 6.8–7.2. As a result, the determination of such kinematic indications in active tectonic zones by GPS observations plays a key role in seismic hazard analysis for the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Abstract

This study aims the relations between seismicity data and strain analysis based on geodetic space techniques in order to define the seismicity hazard of the southwest Anatolian region of Turkey. This region has complex tectonic formations and requires sophisticated techniques and approaches to investigate seismic activities. In this study, global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations were used to determine the velocity field of the region. The strain rates of the region were obtained from the evaluation of this velocity field. In addition, seismicity b parameters of the region were calculated from the analysis of seismicity data. Furthermore, the seismicity data and the geodetic strain rates obtained from the GNSS observations were combined to show the statistical correlation. This correlation was interpreted to define the seismicity. According to the results derived from the correlation analysis, the geodetic strain analysis and seismicity data were highly and inversely correlated (r = −0.96). After the determination of the correlation, the seismic hazard data of the region was added to the analysis. This process shows that seismic hazards are highly and negatively correlated to seismicity data (r = −0.90), even though they are highly but positively correlated to geodetic strain analysis (r = 0.88). Abstract

WOS: 000353630900020, Global Navigation and Satellite System (GNSS) is used in a wide range of applications from low accuracy navigation to high accuracy point positioning. GNSS reference stations are required for using the GNSS applications effectively. GNSS reference stations at the Yildiz Technical University in IstanbulTurkey (YLDZ) and at the Afyon Kocatepe University in Afyon-Turkey (AFKU) were established within the scope of the research projects supported by their universities in 2013. In this study, quality control procedure, data process, analysis and management of YLDZ reference station data are explained. Besides, test results about the Real Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning method of the reference station are given. The reference station YLDZ meets the International GNSS Service (IGS) standards based on the processing results.
