Several studies have shown that infants anticipate human goal-directed actions, but not robot’s ones. However, the studies focusing on the robot goal-directed actions have mainly analyzed the effect of mechanical arms on infant’s attention. To date, the prediction of goal-directed actions in infants has not yet been studied when the agent is a humanoid robot. Given this lack of evidence in infancy research, the present study aims at analyzing infants’ action anticipation of both a human’s and a humanoid robot’s goal-directed action. Data were acquired on thirty 17-month-old infants, watching four video clips, where either a human or a humanoid robot performed a goal-directed action, i.e. reaching a target. Infants looking behavior was measured through the eye-tracking technique. The results showed that infants anticipated the goal-directed action of both the human and the robot and there were no differences in the anticipatory gaze behavior between the two agents. Furthermore, the findings indicated different attentional patterns for the human and the robot, showing a greater attention paid to the robot's face than the human’s face. Overall, the results suggest that 17-month-old infants may infer also humanoid robot’ underlying action goals.

In this paper we analyze whether presidential approval ratings can predict the S&P500 returns over the monthly period of 1941:07 to 2018:04, using a dynamic conditional correlation multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (DCC-MGARCH) model. Our results show that, standard linear Granger causality test fail to detect any evidence of predictability. However, the linear model is found to be misspecified due to structural breaks and nonlinearity, and hence, the result of no causality from presidential approval ratings to stock returns cannot be considered reliable. When we use the DCC-MGARCH model, which is robust to such misspecifications, in 69 percent of the sample period, approval ratings in fact do strongly predict the S&P500 stock return. Moreover, using the DCC-MGARCH model we find that presidential approval rating is also a strong predictor of the realized volatility of S&P500. Overall, our results highlight that presidential approval ratings is helpful in predicting stock return and volatility, when one accounts for nonlinearity and regime changes through a robust time-varying model.

Background & aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease. Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals). Results: Single-marker association analyses found approximately 100 loci displaying P < 5 × 10-4, with the most significant being a signal within the OTUD5 gene (rs3027490; P = 4.80 × 10-6; odds ratio [OR], 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.028-1.88; Japanese cohort). Although the transethnic meta-analysis evidenced only a suggestive signal (rs2239452, mapping within the PIM2 gene; OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09-1.26; P = 9.93 × 10-8), the population-specific meta-analysis showed a genome-wide significant locus in East Asian individuals pointing to the same region (rs7059064, mapping within the GRIPAP1 gene; P = 6.2 × 10-9; OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.21-1.46). Indeed, rs7059064 tags a unique linkage disequilibrium block including 7 genes: TIMM17B, PQBP1, PIM2, SLC35A2, OTUD5, KCND1, and GRIPAP1, as well as a superenhancer (GH0XJ048933 within OTUD5) targeting all these genes. GH0XJ048933 is also predicted to target FOXP3, the main T-regulatory cell lineage specification factor. Consistently, OTUD5 and FOXP3 RNA levels were up-regulated in PBC case patients (1.75- and 1.64-fold, respectively). Conclusions: This work represents the first comprehensive study, to our knowledge, of the chrX contribution to the genetics of an autoimmune liver disease and shows a novel PBC-related genome-wide significant locus.

Long-term azacitidine (AZA) treatment is necessary for its maximal therapeutic effect. This study examined the continuity and efficacy of AZA treatment in real-world use. We conducted a retrospective study in 38 patients who had completed AZA treatment at the Ogaki Municipal Hospital between April 2011 and August 2019. The median number of AZA received cycles was 4. The number of AZA treatment cycles received was 1-3 cycles in 15 (39.5%), 4-6 cycles in 15 (39.5%), and ≥ 7 cycles in 8 (21.1%). The most common reason for discontinued AZA treatment was infection. Overall response rate was 33.3% in patients with discontinued AZA use (4 cycles) and 56.5% in patients with continued AZA (≥ 4). Median overall survival (OS) was 124 (15-529) days and 391 (132-2,825) days in the respective groups (p0.01). The presence of peripheral blood blasts (PBs) was a prognostic factor for continuation of treatment (

We analyse the dynamics of the causal interaction between the stock and foreign exchange markets for the United Kingdom using monthly data going as far back as 1791. First, we consider static causality tests, yielding mixed results. Given the evidence of structural breaks in the relationship between equity and currency returns, we use next the Dynamic Conditional Correlation-Multivariate Generalised Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity time-varying tests for Granger causality. The time-varying testing strategy we implement allows us to detect whether any causal relationship exists at each point in time between stock price and exchange rates returns. We find overwhelming evidence of time-varying information spillovers between the equity and currency returns. We check the robustness of our findings by running the entire battery of tests for two emerging market economies, namely, India and South Africa starting in 1920 and 1910 respectively. On the whole, the United Kingdom results are comparable to those in India and South Africa. As such, our results encompass the fragmented findings from our static tests as well as those in the extant literature.

Ten patients had intrasynovial tendon grafting harvested from the toes for secondary flexor tendon reconstruction in nine fingers and one thumb in our institutes from 2009 to 2014. These patients were followed for a mean of 15 (range: 8–36) months. The ranges of total active motion of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints of these nine fingers were 143° (range: 108–175°) and of the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints of one thumb were 110°. In conclusion, this technique is feasible and gives a good result when successful but with a high complication rate.Level of Evidence IV

In this paper the dynamics of a maximum power point wind energy battery charging system and the implementation of a DC to DC converter is investigated. The required design specifications for a sub 5 kW wind generator are discussed as well as the modelling of the different components of the wind energy system. The duty cycle control of the DC to DC converter for maximum power point tracking at different wind speeds is done by implementing a functional generator. The functional generator adjusts the duty cycle of the converter according to the generator speed. In order to investigate the duty cycle control method and the system’s stability the system is simulated with MATLAB Simulink to determine the response. It was found that the proposed duty cycle control method is effective in maximum power point tracking. Also, that the system’s response is stable for higher frequency disturbances.

The conduct of inflation targeting is heavily dependent on accurate inflation forecasts. Non-linear models have increasingly featured, along with linear counterparts, in the forecasting literature. In this study, we focus on forecasting South African inflation by means of non-linear models and using a long historical dataset of seasonally adjusted monthly inflation rates spanning from 1921:02 to 2013:01. For an emerging market economy such as South Africa, non-linearities can be a salient feature of such long data, hence the relevance of evaluating non-linear models’ forecast performance. In the same vein, given the fact that 1969:10 marks the beginning of a protracted rising trend in South African inflation data, we estimate the models for an in-sample period of 1921:02–1966:09 and evaluate 1, 4, 12, and 24 step-ahead forecasts over an out-of-sample period of 1966:10–2013:01. In addition, using a weighted loss function specification, we evaluate the forecast performance of different non-linear mo...

In this paper we analyze whether a news-based measure of financial stress index (FSI) in the US can predict West Texas Intermediate oil returns and (realized) volatility over the monthly period of 1889:01 to 2016:12, using a dynamic conditional correlation multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (DCC-MGARCH) model. Our results show that, standard linear Granger causality test fail to detect any evidence of predictability. However, the linear model is found to be misspecified due to structural breaks and nonlinearity, and hence, the result of no causality from FSI to oil returns and volatility cannot be considered reliable. When we use the DCC-MGARCH model, which is robust to such misspecifications, in 75 percent and 80 percent of the sample periods, FSI in fact do strongly predict the oil returns and volatility respectively. Overall, our results highlight that FSI is helpful in predicting oil returns and volatility, when one accounts for nonlinearity and regime changes through a robust time-varying model.

Not a few fire accidents in or on concrete structures such as tunnels, multipurpose ducts, and bridges, were reported, and various fire protection measures have being proposed. In many cases, the fires are caused by vehicles, and once damage is done, repairs take a long time and require significant expenses, posing a substantial burden on society. Rational fire-resistant design based on the fire behavior of concrete structures is required. The basic approaches to the fire resistance of concrete structures, the extent of damage upon occurrence of fires, and fire protection measures are described in this paper.

This paper investigates the existence of significant spillovers from the housing sector onto the wider economy for eight OECD countries in a six-variable structural vector autoregressive model (SVAR). A housing demand shock is identified through the recursive Choleski decompostion and, subsequently by using Uhlig’s (2005) agnostic identification procedure. The latter allows a housing demand shock to be identified by imposing sign restrictions on the impulse responses of consumer prices, residential investment, real house prices and mortgage loans, while private consumption and nominal interest rate responses are left unrestricted. The results suggest that consumption responds positively and significantly to a house price shock in Canada, France, Japan, Spain and, the UK. A significant positive delayed response of nominal interest rates follows a house price shock in Germany, Japan, the UK and, the US, suggesting that while central banks do not seem to respond instantly and systematically to a housing demand shock, its repercussions on the economy tend to translate into higher policy rates after a few quarters.

This study investigates the trade effects of the EU-SA and SADC preferential trade agreements of which South Africa is a member. Using a panel data estimation of the gravity model of bilateral trade and based on data from 1994 to 2008, the study finds the EU-SA preferential trade agreement to have a significant trade expansion effect. The study further reveals that an informative conclusion on trade effects of the SADC preferential trade agreement can only be reached once the agreement has been fully operational. The study also recommends that trade policy in South Africa should increasingly be geared towards broad-based multilateral liberalisation. In addition, South Africa should promote regional economic stability and development through supporting regional trade agreements initiatives. Keywords: Trade creation, trade diversion, preferential trade agreement, panel data estimation, gravity model of bilateral trade

Contains fulltext : 79933.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Intestinal mucosal barrier injury (MBI), resulting from myeloablative conditioning for haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), is an important cause of morbidity. Despite its frequency, recognition presents a challenge, while the aetiology needs still to be unravelled. The relationship between enterocyte mass and enterocyte loss was explored by examining citrulline serum levels and by assessing circulating intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) and ileal bile acid-binding protein (I-BABP), proteins released by dying mature enterocytes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-four adult patients with haematological malignancy received allogeneic HSCT (HSCT day 0) 12 days after being given idarubicin, cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation as myeloablative conditioning, a regimen known to induce oral and intestinal MBI. Serum levels of citrulline, I-FABP and I-BABP were measured on HSCT days -12, -6, 0, +7, +14 and +21. RESULTS: Myeloablative conditioning resulted in a significant decrease in serum citrulline with the nadir on HSCT day +7; thereafter, levels rose gradually. Simultaneously, a significant decrease in I-FABP and I-BABP levels occurred from the day of transplant until day +14. CONCLUSIONS: Simultaneous reduction and subsequent increase of citrulline and I-FABP and I-BABP levels following cytotoxic treatment show that enterocyte mass corresponds to lower rate of dying enterocytes, indicating reduced turnover of enterocytes. Assessment of enterocyte turnover and mass offers opportunities for evaluation of new MBI therapies.

In this paper, we proposed a new image quality evaluation index-color distribution index (CDI). It considers color gamut, contrast ratio, maximum luminance, gamma characteristics, and just noticeable difference (JND) as human visual system to evaluate the ability for reproducing visually smooth gradation. When the CDI cell was defined, we verified JND from a fundamental matter, such as JND in luminance and chromaticity, using the latest TV sets. According to our investigations, luminance JND was AL/L = 0.01 and chromaticity JND was Au'v' = 0.001. We used these with unit CDI cell and evaluated bit depth needed for high image quality without any visible false contour. We clarified that 12 bit is needed for necessary and sufficient condition to reproduce high image quality with TV set designed based on BT.709. Also, we clarified that color gamut, contrast ratio, maximum luminance, gamma characteristics and bit depth should be balanced to achieve TV sets of high image quality from the viewpoint of the total image quality improvement.

Previous research has shown the inhibitory effects of hop bract polyphenols (HBP) on cariogenic streptococci in vitro, but their effects in humans have not been investigated. This double-blind, crossover clinical study tested the hypothesis that HBP delivered in a mouthrinse suppresses plaque regrowth in humans. Twenty-nine healthy male volunteers had all plaque removed, and refrained from all oral hygiene for 3 days, except for rinsing with a mouthrinse containing 0.1% HBP or a placebo. The results showed that the mean amount of plaque assessed by the Patient Hygiene Performance score after the volunteers used the HBP mouthrinse was significantly less than that after they used the placebo (p < 0.001). The number of mutans streptococci in the plaque samples after volunteers used the HBP mouthrinse was significantly lower than that after they used the placebo (p < 0.05). These findings suggested that HBP, delivered in a mouthrinse, successfully reduced dental plaque regrowth in humans.

Annealing studies were performed on single hetero (SH) structures and multiple quantum well (MQW) structures of TlGaAs/GaAs grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) at a low growth temperature of 190 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on the SH structures revealed that the mole fraction of the antisite As in the low-temperature grown layers can be decreased to less than 0.1% by annealing at 450 °C for 30 min. Due to this annealing, however, decrease and inhomogeneity in Tl mole fraction were also caused. On the other hand, extending the total time of annealing at 400 °C to 16 h enabled us to decrease the antisite As mole fraction to about 0.1% without causing decrease and inhomogeneity in Tl mole fraction. It has also been confirmed that the well-defined MQW structures of TlGaAs/GaAs remain almost unchanged after annealing at 400 °C for 30 min.
