Abstract

The article discusses the experience of restoring sheep stock in the Samara region under counter-sanctions. During the economic reform years, the number of sheep in the region decreased by 10 times. However, the introduction in 2014 of reciprocal restrictions on the import of food products from European countries made it possible to partially restore the population. Over this period, it has grown almost 2 times. As the experience of creating new sheep farms in modern conditions shows, it is necessary to change the old specialization (wool production) to a new one - lamb production. Polyester sheep breeds are better suited for this purpose. With an integrated approach to the implementation of an investment project in sheep farming, high profitability indicators can be achieved. Starting with 300 ewes and spending about 15 million rubles for the purchase of breeding stock, equipment, construction, in two and a half years, the number of productive stock can be brought up to 1000 head. The calculations showed that in this case the payback period of the projects is no more than 4-5 years, depending on the scale of production, the chosen pace of development, and the depth of products processing.

Abstract

The tuberculosis (TB) situation in the Russian penitentiary system has received much attention. We performed a descriptive epidemiological study of TB in two St Petersburg remand prisons (SIZOs). The medical databases of the TB divisions in these prisons were searched for all diagnosed cases of TB from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2002. The main diagnostic method was chest x ray. The total number of reported TB cases in these two remand prisons during this three-year period was 876. Out of these, 432 were diagnosed at entry to prison, and 444 developed the disease during incarceration, with the proportion diagnosed during incarceration increasing over time. The majority of cases were aged under 30 years. TB incidence in Russian remand prisons is still very high and needs to be monitored closely.

Abstract

Background: Detainees have a substantial risk to develop tuberculosis (TB) due to a higher incidence of TB in remand prison compared to the civil community. They develop TB during incarceration not only due to poor living conditions in remand prison, but also due to some factors affecting their life before imprisonment. Prevention measures against TB spread from penitentiary institutions to society include study of factors, which contribute to TB development. Current study aims at identification of important risk factors of TB development in remand prison in St. Petersburg, Russia., Methods: A retrospective matched case-control study was performed from May 2002 to May 2003 in two remand prisons in St. Petersburg. One hundred and fourteen prisoners (57 cases, 57 controls) were interviewed by using standardised questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors., Results: Six factors were significantly linked to the risk of developing TB: narcotic drug use (odds ratio (OR): 2.6, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0-6.9), low income (OR: 3.2, CI: 1.2-8.6), high ratio of prisoners per available bed (OR: 4.0, CI: 1.1-15.0), not having own bed clothes (OR: 13.0, CI: 2.7-61.6), and little time outdoors (OR: 3.3, CI: 1.3-8.5). However, good housing before imprisonment (OR: 4.2, CI: 1.1-15.7) was a separate risk factor for TB., Conclusions: Three of the risk factors (high number of prisoners per bed, not having own bed clothes, and little time outdoors) are certainly possible to approach by improvement of conditions in remand prisons. The remaining three factors (narcotic drug use, good housing before imprisonment, and low income) provide knowledge about study population, but cannot be intervened by prison's medical staff.
