Purpose:Electron tubes with small radii are useful to treat narrow regions which cannot accommodate normal electron applicators. In small electron fields, it is not trivial to estimate restricted mass stopping power ratio (MSR), which is needed to evaluate dose from ion chamber measurement. We studied MSRs in small electron tube fields using the Monte Carlo simulation. Methods:Electron tubes with radii, 3 and 2.5 cm, were used in this study. Nominal electron energies were 6 and 9 MeV. There were two types of tubes. One has a normal cut but the other has a 45‐degree cut. For the normal cut tube, percent depth dose (PDD) in water was evaluated along the center of axis (CAX) of a beam. For the 45‐degree cut tube, PDD was evaluated along the vertical line from the intersection of the CAX and the phantom surface with 45‐degree gantry angle. The MSRs and mean electron energies were calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation. Results: We found good agreement between the measured and calculated PDDs. The changes of mean energies from those in the 10×10 cm2 field at the depth of maximum dose (dmax) were very small for the normal cut electron tubes. For the 45‐degree cut tubes, the changes of mean energies at dmax were less than 1 MeV. The MSRs in the normal cut tube fields were almost the same as those in the 10×10 cm2 field at the corresponding depths. The MSRs for the 45‐degree cut tubes deviated from those in the 10×10 cm2 by about 1% (1.5 % at most). Conclusions: We evaluated the mean energies and MSRs in small electron tube fields. The deviations of them from the values in the 10×10 cm2 were small. The maximum difference of MSR was 1.5% in 45‐degree cut tube fields. Beta interferon therapy was given to seven chronic hepatitis C patients with haemophilia or other haemorrhagic disorders who had received clotting factor replacement therapy. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels ranged from 82 to 275 UL(-1) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA ranged from 10(6) to 10(9) copies mL(-1) . HCV-genotypes were I+II in one patient, II in one, II+III in four and IV in one. Patients received 6 mega units (MU) daily of natural type beta interferon by intravenous infusion for 6 weeks. In three of seven patients, the protocol was modified to intermittent administration because neutrocytopenia (under 500 × 10(6) L(-1) ) developed in two patients and thrombocytopenia (under 50 × 10(9) L(-1) ) was observed in one during treatment. No modification was necessary with regard to daily and total dose. All patients received administration without any haemorrhagic complications. Six of seven patients showed improvement in serum ALT levels, and one of the patients showed normalization of ALT levels for 6 months after treatment. HCV-RNA disappeared in four patients by the end of treatment, although no one remained negative 6 months after treatment. The results of our study were similar to those reported in previous papers which described the use of alpha interferon in haemophiliacs. The reason none of the patients showed sustained loss of HCV-RNA after therapy might be associated with high HCV-RNA levels, characteristics of the HCV-genotype and prolonged duration of the disease.

Single-crystalline films of superconducting Ba1−xKxFe2As2 and Sr1−xKxFe2As2 were grown at temperatures below 350 °C under reduced As flux by molecular beam epitaxy. We performed a systematic study of the doping dependence of Tc in Ba1−xKxFe2As2 for x = 0.0 to 1.0 and Sr1−xKxFe2As2 for x = 0.0 to 0.5. The highest T c on ( T c end ) so far attained is 38.3 K (35.5 K) at x ∼ 0.3 for Ba1−xKxFe2As2, and 33.4 K (31.0 K) at x ∼ 0.4 for Sr1−xKxFe2As2. The optimum K-doping level inducing the highest Tc is different in the two systems. The implication of the results is briefly discussed.

We report molecular beam epitaxy growth of FeSe and Sr1−xKxFe2As2. In FeSe growth, the compositional window to obtain the superconducting phase (β-FeSe) is very limited. The use of Al2O3–R substrates instead lattice-matched LaAlO3 substrates slightly expands the compositional window, and we observed a substantial drop of resistivity but with no zero resistivity attained. In Sr1−xKxFe2As2 growth, the largest problem is the volatility of K. Films grown at substrate temperatures higher than 300 °C contain no K. Superconducting films of Sr1−xKxFe2As2 can be obtained at the growth temperature of 250 °C with very low As flux. The best film has T c on = 30.3 K and T c end = 22.9 K .

Unexpected positive results from the widely used IDEXX ELISA for the detection of antibodies to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) may confound investigations of the disease. Supplementing the ELISA with blocking agents and the use of IgG purified from serum samples had no effect on the unexpected positive results, suggesting that they were due to an antibody-antigen reaction. Simple competitive and blocking ELISAs were developed by modifying the IDEXX ELISA, and they and an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) were used to examine PRRSV antibodies in 33 antibody-negative, 88 antibody-positive and 73 unexpectedly positive sera. All the unexpectedly positive sera were negative by IFAT, and 89.0 per cent were negative by both the competitive and blocking ELISAs. The competitive ELISA (97.7 per cent) and the blocking ELISA (96.5 per cent) detected more positive sera than the IFAT (90.9 per cent). These results show that both ELISAs are capable of distinguishing positive and unexpectedly positive sera, and suggest that most of the unexpected positive signals are false-positives.

Generalized scaling laws for the formation of plasma confining potentials are investigated to find the physics essentials common to representative tandem-mirror operational modes in GAMMA 10. These modes are characterized in terms of (i) a high-potential mode and (ii) a hot-ion mode. The potential-formation scalings in these modes are consolidated and generalized on the basis of the consistency with finding of the wider validity of Cohen's strong electron-cyclotron heating (ECH) theory covering over both modes. A plateau-shaped electron distribution function is observed when a plug electron-confining potential is formed in the hot ion mode of GAMMA 10, as predicted in terms of the strong ECH theory.

Lithium intercalation of iron cyanide Prussian blue, Fe 4 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3 · x H 2 O, in an aprotic media was examined in regard to the water content inside the lattice. Prussian blue showed reversible lithium intercalation potential around 3 V vs. Li, which corresponds to a redox of iron ions. Two types of water molecules were contained in the structure, one of which called zeolitic water has little effect on lithium intercalation and the theoretical capacity was always observed regardless of its amount. Other coordinating water molecules surrounding Fe 3+ ions were necessary for the lithium intercalation and their removal by drying beyond 200°C led to a significant capacity decrease.

The effects of the plasma-confining potentials and the associated radially sheared electric fields on the central-cell electron energy confinement are theoretically and experimentally investigated in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. In particular, the scaling of the central-cell electron temperatures with electron-confining potentials is studied on the basis of the local energy-balance equation. The obtained theoretical scaling of electron temperatures with electron-confining potentials is then compared with the experimentally observed relation between these two parameters. Recently, by the use of new 0.5-MW level gyrotrons in the plug region, four-time progress in the formation of the ion-confining potential Φ c including a new record of 3 kV has been achieved in a hot-ion mode having bulk-ion temperature T i = several keV. In the hot-ion mode, intermittent vortex-like turbulent structures are observed in the case without the gyrotron injections; in this case, radially produced weak shear ofelectric fields dE r /dr and appreciable transverse losses are observed. However, during the application of electron-cyclotron heatings, the associated potential rise produces a stronger shear in the central cell (dE r /dr = several 10 kV/m 2 ) resulting in the disappearance of such intermittent turbulent vortices with plasma confinement improvement. In order to investigate the effect of the radially sheared electric fields on the electron energy confinement, the radial profiles of the thermal diffusivity are derived from the local power-balance analysis by the use of the data from the following various diagnostics in the above-described hot-ion mode. The obtained radial profiles of radial electric field and thermal diffusivity imply that the reduction of the thermal diffusivity is associated with the radially produced strong shear of electric fields.

The effects of synthetic polymer (HE, PEI, and PAM) and natural polymer (chitosan) and chemical (alum) coagulant on the removal of lignin (black liquor color, and TOC) from pulp and paper industrial wastewater were investigated. It was observed that the formation of flocs was rapidly taking place which was an indication of fast coagulation flocculation process. PAM which is a nonionic polymer had poor effect as compared to HE and PEI which are cationic polymers. Both HE and PEI resulted in good brown colored precipitate at pH of about 6. These coagulant resulted in removal of about 80% of color and 30% of TOC from alkaline (black liquor) wastewater by gravity settling in 30 minutes. alum resulted in good precipitate with less than 30 minutes settling time by gravity. The percent color removed by alum was the same as the one removed by HE or PEI, but the TOC removed was higher by this chemical coagulant (about 40%). The natural coagulant, chitosan, resulted in the highest removal in both color and TOC as compared to both synthetic polymers and chemical coagulant. Up to 90% of color and 70% of TOC were observed to be removed by chitosan.

The present study investigated properties of various mixtures of organic acids (malic and malonic) and calcium phosphate compounds (beta-tricalcium phosphate, ashed bovine bone, and synthetic hydroxyapatite) with the objective of determining the optimum combination of organic acid and calcium phosphate compound for components of a chitosan-bonded bone-filling paste. beta-tricalcium phosphate was decomposed by malic acid and malonic acid, but these two acids did not decompose synthetic hydroxyapatite and ashed bovine bone. Assessment of ion release from a set paste containing either synthetic hydroxyapatite or ashed bovine bone indicated that only calcium ions were appreciably released after storing and stirring the set paste in physiologic saline for 7 days.

The brown alga Ectocarpus has recently become the first fully sequenced multicellular alga and is an important biological model. Due to the large and growing number of Ectocarpus strains isolated and maintained by the research community, including increasing numbers of mutants, there is an urgent need for developing reliable, cost-effective long-term maintenance techniques. We report here that cryopreservation constitutes an attractive option in this respect, using a simple two-step protocol employing combined DMSO 10 percent (v/v) and sorbitol 9 percent (w/v) as cryoprotectants. This model organism appears to be remarkably robust and post-cryo recovery has been observed in all strains tested in this study. Cultures can be regenerated by the germination of cryopreserved zooids (spores), or the recovery of vegetative cells. In the latter case, dividing surviving cells may grow into the cell lumen of a neighbouring dead cell, eventually regenerating a phenotypically normal thalloidal structure.

Monosodium and monopotassium salts [2-4] of isomeric caffeic acid tetramers were isolated from Arnebia euchroma as anti-HIV agents. Mixtures of dipotassium and disodium salts [1] of a caffeic acid tetramer and dipotassium and potassium-sodium salts [5] of a caffeic acid tetramer glucoside were also isolated from the active fraction. The structures of 1-5 were characterized by chemical and spectral evidence. Compounds 2-4 demonstrated potent anti-HIV activity with EC50 values of 2.8, 4.0, and 1.5 micrograms/ml, respectively. Treatment of 1-4 with dilute HCl yielded known caffeic acid tetramers [8 and 9], which were found to be less active, indicating the importance of the sodium and potassium salts to the enhanced anti-HIV activity.

We conducted a study to investigate the state of human infection by the Lyme disease pathogen by determining the prevalence of positivity for serum antibody to Borrelia burgdorferiamong regional residents and forestry workers in Nagano Prefecture. Assay of the antibody titer was performed by indirect fluorescent antibody technique (IFA) using Borrelia burgdorferistrain B-31 as the antigen. The study was based on the results of an earlier investigation to test our prediction of high infection rates for the adult ticks of I. persulcatusand I. ovatusin Nagano Prefecture. The study results showed infection to regional residents and forestry workers by the Lyme disease pathogen and a significantly higher positive rate in forestry workers than in regional residents. These findings indicate the need to consider this disorder as an occupational disease of forestry workers. Asia Pac J Public Health1994;7(4):214-17.

Refractive index measurements have been performed as a function of wavelength and as a function of temperature for different tellurium halide based glasses (the TeX glasses). The dispersion properties have been discussed and compared with chalcogenide glasses. It has been indicated that a small modification of the glass composition can lead to an important change of the refractive index. These results are interesting for the design of fibres having a core-cladding structure. As far as the d n /d T is concerned, this thermal-optical parameter is almost the same for different glasses in the same family.

During the-15-year period from April, 1977 to March, 1992, 84 patients with esophageal cancer were treated. Thirteen patients (15.5%) including 11 males and two females were superficial esophageal cancer. The mean age was 65.1 years, with a range of 54 to 75 years. The location of lesions was the middle intra-thoracic esophagus in 10 patients, the lower intra-thoracic esophagus in two, and the abdominal esophagus in one. The invasion to the intraepithelium (ep) was observed in four patients, to the muscularis mucosa (mm) in two, and to thesubmucosa (sm) in seven. No lymphnode metastasis was seen in ep and mm cancer with good prognosis. The rate of lymphnode metastasis was increased in sm cancer, suggesting that sm cancer shouldbe treated with extended surgical pro-cedures according as the treatment for advanced cancer.

— Two hundred and forty and 213 nm excited resonance Raman spectra of purple membrane (PM) and blue membrane (BM) of Halobacterium halobiurn were studied. Generally intense Trp scattering and a strong relative intensity of the W3 band at 1553 cm-1 in the 240 nm spectrum of PM indicate red-shifted Bb absorptions of some Trp sidechains. A high intensity ratio of Trp doublet at 1360 and 1340 cm-1 suggests interactions with highly hydrophobic Trp environments. These Trp are not strongly H-bonded and their N1 sites are located in positions easily reached by solvent water molecules. Tyrosines are also in very hydrophobic environments and H-bonded. The mainchain consists of normal and distorted α-helices whose amide NH are hardly deuterated in D2O suspension, and some NH exchangeable irregular segments on the membrane surface. Upon acidification, the ratio of Trp doublet with 240 nm excitation decreases concomitant with increase in retinal absorbance at 600 nm, and the W3 relative intensity and overall Trp scattering also decrease. These observations strongly indicate that the counterpart of Trp interactions in PM is the retinal and that the interactions partly diminish upon acidification. The Tyr environment also changes with the color. Although the 240 nm amide I intensity is greater in acid BM than in PM, the change is not related to the color change because the amide I intensity of deionized BM is practically the same as that of PM. The amide I intensity increase in acid BM is ascribable to a structural change of the surface peptides due to acid induced aggregation.

The effect of the contribution of zero frequency (stationary) energetic trapped particles on magnetohydrodynamic modes and the resonant excitation of these particles is studied on the basis of the dispersion relation which is applicable to both the internal kink mode and the ballooning mode in tokamaks. The stability window is found to be significantly enlarged by the steady contribution of energetic trapped particles.

A thoracoscopic resection of mediastinal neurofibroma originating from the intrathoracic vagus nerve was successfully performed in an 18-year-old female. This report reviews the clinical and morphological features of intrathoracic vagus neurofibroma. Often neurofibroma has multiple lesions and/or multinodular shape. Thoracoscopic resection is a useful treatment for patients with intrathoracic neurofibroma, although careful observation is necessary when performing a radical resection.

In this study, patients who played sports after undergoing a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were functionally analyzed and their degree of satisfaction was surveyed. The study group consisted of seven men and four women (out of a group of 89 total knee arthroplasties). They were evaluated by the Tegner (1) activity score and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score (2). The mean age of the patients was 68 years (range: 47 to 76) at surgery and the mean follow-up period was 26.4 months (range: 11 to 60). Wright Advantim uncemented knee prostheses with a stem and posterior stabilizer or Wright Advance uncemented knee systems (Wright Medical, USA) were used. All operations were performed using a medial subvastus approach by the senior author (TY). The mean preoperative JOA score was 67.3 and it improved to 87.3 at follow-up. The mean Tegner score improved from 1.5 to 4 points after the operation in those patients who returned to sports. At follow-up, none of the patients demonstrated polyethylene wear, showed signs of loosening or required revision surgery. Once strength, mobility, and coordination recovered, patients were successfully allowed to return to low-impact activity such as downhill skiing, jogging, hiking, and mountaineering. It is too early to determine the effect of these increased activities on polyethylene wear and loosening.
