Myocardial interstitial fibrosis (MIF) occurs in several ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathies and is associated with left ventricular dysfunction and progression to heart failure (HF). MIF exists in two types – reparative and reactive with different origin and molecular mechanisms. Although MIF arises mainly because of alterations in collagen turnover leading to collagen fiber accumulation, there are also qualitative changes in collagen fibers in cardiac diseases. There are several studies for cellular and molecular mechanisms and his role in cardiac function, biomarkers and potential target therapies.

Aims. We aim to investigate how polarimetric observations can improve our understanding of the nature and diversity of M/X-type asteroids. Methods. Polarimetric observations of the selected M/X-type asteroids were carried out at the Tohoku 0.6-m telescope at Haleakala Observatory, Hawaii (simultaneously in BVR filters), the 2-m telescope of the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory in Rozhen (in R filter), and the 2.15-m telescope of the Complejo Astron\'omico El Leoncito (CASLEO), Argentina (in V filter). We analysed the polarimetric characteristics of M/X-type asteroids along with the available data obtained by other techniques. Results. New polarimetric observations of 22 M/X-type asteroids combined with published observations provide a data set of 41 asteroids for which the depth of a negative polarisation branch and/or inversion angle were determined. We found that the depth of the negative polarisation branch tends to increase with decreasing steepness of the near-infrared spectra. Asteroids with a deeper negative polarisation branch tend to have a higher radar circular polarisation ratio. We show that, based on the relationship of the depth of the negative polarisation branch and inversion angle, two main sub-types can be distinguished among M-type asteroids. We suggest that these groups may be related to different surface compositions similar to (1) irons and stony-irons and (2) enstatite and iron-rich carbonaceous chondrites., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Context. The rotation state of small asteroids is affected by the Yarkovsky–O’Keefe–Radzievskii–Paddack (YORP) effect, which is a net torque caused by solar radiation directly reflected and thermally reemitted from the surface. Due to this effect, the rotation period slowly changes, which can be most easily measured in light curves because the shift in the rotation phase accumulates over time quadratically. Aims. By new photometric observations of selected near-Earth asteroids, we want to enlarge the sample of asteroids with a detected YORP effect. Methods. We collected archived light curves and carried out new photometric observations for asteroids (10115) 1992 SK, (1620) Geographos, and (1685) Toro. We applied the method of light curve inversion to fit observations with a convex shape model. The YORP effect was modeled as a linear change of the rotation frequency υ ≡ dω∕dt and optimized together with other spin and shape parameters. Results. We detected the acceleration υ = (8.3 ± 0.6) × 10−8 rad d−2 of the rotation for asteroid (10115) 1992 SK. This observed value agrees well with the theoretical value of YORP-induced spin-up computed for our shape and spin model. For (1685) Toro, we obtained υ = (3.3 ± 0.3) × 10−9 rad d−2, which confirms an earlier tentative YORP detection. For (1620) Geographos, we confirmed the previously detected YORP acceleration and derived an updated value of υ with a smaller uncertainty. We also included the effect of solar precession into our inversion algorithm, and we show that there are hints of this effect in Geographos’ data. Conclusions. The detected change of the spin rate of (10115) 1992 SK has increased the total number of asteroids with YORP detection to ten. In all ten cases, the dω∕dt value is positive, so the rotation of these asteroids is accelerated. It is unlikely to be just a statistical fluke, but it is probably a real feature that needs to be explained.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project., La lista completa de autores puede consultarse en el documento o en la página web de la revista., Facultad de Ingeniería

An improved magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with chemistry is presented. The analysis of the source and sink terms for H 2 O + shows that for small comets up to 11% of water molecules are finally ionized. For large comets (such as Halley) this fraction decreases to less than 3%. From the MHD scaling laws a similarity law for the individual ion densities is deduced which takes into account that the mother molecules are depleted by dissociation. This is applied to H 2 O + ions. Radial density profiles from model calculations, observations by Giotto near comet Halley, and ground based observations of three comets confirm this scaling law for H 2 O + ions. From the similarity law for the density a scaling law for the column density is derived which is more convenient to apply for ground based observations. From these scaling laws methods are derived which allow the determination of the water production rate from the ground based images of the H 2 O + ions. Finally, the two dimensional images of model column densities are compared with observations.

On March 31 and April 1, 1997, simultaneous photometry and polarimetry of comet Hale-Bopp's dust was conducted with the two-channel focal reducer of the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy attached to the 2 m telescope of Pik Terskol Observatory (Northern Caucasus). Interference filters at642 nm and 443 nm selected red and blue narrow-band continuum windows. The observations have been averaged over the one hour of timethe comet could be observed. The polarization maps cover an area of about1 arcmin2 around the nucleus. The values of polarization degree measured close to the nucleus agree very well with observations obtained with aperture polarimetry. They are lower than in the surrounding coma by about 1%. In our field of view the polarization increases along the sun-comet line from the solar to the antisolar side by about 3%. The dust shells are visible in the polarization images. The polarization in the shells is higher by 1 to 2%and this increase is higher in the red than in the blue range. Therefore the ratio of red to blue polarization (≈ 1.2) increases in the shells by ≈ 0.03. In principle, the polarization excess in the shells, the ratio of red/blue polarization and the higher integrated polarization as compared to other comets can be explained by an excess of particles of radius of about 0.1 μm. Such particles, however, are subject to strong radiation pressure and will be pushed back into the tail before they reach the observed location of the shells. Real Rayleigh particles cannot explain the observed increase in the ratio of red/blue polarization. One therefore cannot exclude the possibility that the excess polarization in the shells is caused by fluffy aggregates via effects which are presently not well understood. The colour map shows features not well related to intensity and polarization, perhaps another dust shell of a different particle size.

Fabry-Perot interferograms of comet Hale-Bopp were obtained on several nights in March and April 1997. For this purpose we utilized the 2-channel focal reducer of the Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy at the 2-m telescope of the Pik Terskol Observatory. Solid Fabry-Perot etalons of resolving power 30000 were used in both channels of the focal reducer. The main aim of this study is to measure the velocities and abundances of OH+ and H2O+, both ions closely related to the same parent molecule, H2O. In the blue channel interferograms we identified several individual OH+ rotational lines of the A3Πi - X3Σ− (0-0) transition and measured their Doppler shifts. The target emissions in the red channel were the H2O+ lines of the A2A1 − X2B1 (10-0) band. We found that the line of sight velocities, obtained from the Doppler shifted wavelengths of emissions in the comet are higher in sunward direction than in the plasma tail and do not exceed 20 km s–1. The corresponding values, deprojected in antisolar direction, are consistent with predictions by magnetohydrodynamical models of the solar-wind-comet interaction, when one accounts for the extremely high gas production rate of comet Hale-Bopp.

The first results from a new observing programme studying the Io plasma torus and neutral clouds are presented. Images of both Io's sodium cloud and its SII torus were obtained on 11 and 12 Dec 1989 using a focal reducer CCD camera and a tunable Fabry-Perot filter. Masks were used allowing the study of both ansae of the torus simultaneously. The peak brightness in [SII] at 6716A was 390(±50) Rayleigh at an L-shell of 5.4 (±0.1) RJ. The torus was inclined by 7.8(±0.6)° to the Jovian equatorial plane. The line ratio of the forbidden red doublet lines (6716A/6731A) was 0.95(±0.15). These results show that the torus conditions in Dec 1989 were significantly different from those at Voyager fly-by but may be similar to conditions observed in Mar 1981 from the ground.

Since many years cometary ions have been observed by the authors and their coworkers in order to study the comet-solar wind interaction. Comets with water production rates ranging from 1028 (46P/Wirtanen) to 6 1030 molecules s-1 (C/1995 01 Hale-Bopp) have been observed. In this paper we briefly introduce the physics of the comet-solar wind interaction. New observations of comet C/1996 Q1 (Tabur) are presented, where for the first time H2O+ and CO+ ions have been recorded exactly simultaneously with a two-channel system. They are compared with previous observations of comets C/1989 X1 (Austin), 46P (Wirtanen) and 109P (Swift-Tuttle). We use a new method of Wegmann et al. (1998), based on the MHD scaling law, to determine the water production of comet Tabur from its H2O+ column density map and obtain a value of 3.3 1028 water molecules s-1. Nonstationary phenomena like tail rays and so-called tail disconnections are very briefly reviewed. A movie of plasma envelopes observed in the light of OH+ in comet 1995 01 (Hale-Bopp) is presented on the attached CD-ROM.

We present new narrow-band images of the Extended Emission-Line Region (EELR) in NGC 3516 in light of [O III] λ 4959, Hα + [N II] λλ 6548, 84, [O I] λ 6364, He is/c λ 6678 and [Fe VII] + [Ca V] λ 6087. The observations were carried with the 2-m reflector of the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory and the Focal Reducer of the Max-Plank-Institut for Aeronomy. Our [O III] and Hα + [N II] images confirm previously reported EELR features. In contrast, the image in the high-excitation [Fe VII] + [Ca V] line shows a different structure. We identify a biconical morphology over a kiloparsec scale with peak intensities 5.9 × 10−16 ergs cm−2 s−1 arcsec−2 and 3.5 × 10−16 ergs cm−2 s−1 arcsec−2 to north and south of the nucleus, respectively. The total flux of the [Fe VII] + [Ca V] emission in 5″ and 24″ circular apertures centered at the nucleus is (9.97 ± 0.38) × 10−14 ergs cm−2 s−1 and (1.53 ± 0.15) × 10−13 ergs cm−2 s−1, respectively, which is in good agreement with measurements of Boksenberg & Netzer (1977) through the 5″ aperture. The cone axis lies at PA ∼ −10°. The continuum images (Veilleux et al., 1993, Miyaji et al., 1992) indicate a “bar” aligned along PA ∼ −10°. The velocity extrema regions revealed by Veilleux et al. (1993) are coincident with the peak intensities in our [Fe VII] + [Ca V]. We suppose that our image in [Fe VII] + [Ca V] outlines a Coronal-Line Region (CLR) of NGC 3516, which extends far beyond the classical NLR of the galaxy. Korista & Ferland (1989) have recently shown theoretically that the CLR in Seyferts may be a result of a low-density interstellar medium exposed to and photoionized by a “bare” active nucleus. A typical ISM with Ne ∼ 1–5 cm−3 may produce such an extended CLR as that observed by us.

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA., La lista completa de autores que integran el documento puede consultarse en el archivo., Departamento de Aeronáutica, Facultad de Ingeniería, Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía, Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

- Abstract
On 4 July 2005, many observatories around the world and in space observed the collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 or its aftermath. This was an unprecedented coordinated observational campaign. These data show that (i) there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact; (ii) the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact; (iii) the new activity did not last more than a few days, and by 9 July the comet's behavior was indistinguishable from its pre-impact behavior; and (iv) there were interesting transient phenomena that may be correlated with cratering physics.
