Manganese oxide and metallic manganese have made a long and varied contribution to the production of iron and steel through the centuries, long before Sir Robert Hadfield’s alloy manganese steel first produced in 1882. Although quite well known empirically, this contribution has sometimes been misunderstood or misrepresented.The success of some of the early so-called ‘natural steels’ was the presence of manganese oxides in the iron ores used.Manganese oxide was already used as a flux from the early days of the production of crucible steel in Asia and it now appears that it was used as a flux from the inception of the otherwise very different later European crucible steel technologies. After the introduction of crucible steel making in Britain in the 18th century, foreign competitors believed that the reason for the success of the processes used at Sheffield was a secret flux and studies on recently discovered 18th century crucibles in Sheffield have shown that process was indeed fluxed with manganese oxide.The function of manganese in the later European crucible steel industry has been rather overshadowed and confused historically by the very different ‘Carburet of manganese’, a strange concoction, patented by Josiah Heath in 1839 added to iron or steel to purify the metal. At the time the chemistry of the process was misunderstood and many acrimonious and inaccurate claims were made, crucially confusing the very different functions of manganese oxide and manganese metal, overshadowing the part already played by manganese oxide for almost a century previously..Finally manganese and its salts played a crucial role in the Bessemer process of steel making.

This chapter presents an overview of several overarching themes relevant to Black mothers. Multiple social indexes of physical and mental health and well-being, shaped within a lived framework of structural racism. These structural themes include racial disparities and disproportionality based on explicit marginalization, stereotypes and implicit bias – all unresolved and unrecognized legacies of the historical trauma of African enslavement in the Americas. We discuss the long-standing schema of a “strong Black woman” that often obscures the gentle and more vulnerable side of Black mothering and minimizes the mental health needs of Black mothers and their need for emotional, physical or monetary support. The chapter concludes with a discussion of a strengths perspective to briefly examine the practices of racial socialization through protective nurturing and adaptive parenting practices leading to resilience in young children to survive in a hostile, racially stratified society. We conclude with suggestions for directions for future research.

This paper presents for the first time results of two excavation seasons conducted in 1979 and 1984 by the Arabah Expedition at one of the major smelting camps in the copper ore district of Timna. The results, together with new radiocarbon dates of short-lived samples from the site, demonstrate that copper production during the Late Bronze Age (13th to the first half of 12th centuries BC) was undertaken on a relatively small scale in demilitarized camps, systematically organized in a distinct area at the northern part of the Timna Valley. This production system should be associated with the Egyptian presence in the region, represented by the nearby Hathor Shrine. The new data from Site 3 also shed light on the transition to the Iron Age, a period when production peaked in the entire Arabah Valley as new copper production systems were established, replacing their predecessors entirely.

Obesity is a genetically heterogeneous disorder. Using targeted and whole-exome sequencing, we studied 32 human and 87 rodent obesity genes in 2,548 severely obese children and 1,117 controls. We identified 52 variants contributing to obesity in 2% of cases including multiple novel variants in GNAS, which were sometimes found with accelerated growth rather than short stature as described previously. Nominally significant associations were found for rare functional variants in BBS1, BBS9, GNAS, MKKS, CLOCK and ANGPTL6. The p.S284X variant in ANGPTL6 drives the association signal (rs201622589, MAF∼0.1%, odds ratio = 10.13, p-value = 0.042) and results in complete loss of secretion in cells. Further analysis including additional case-control studies and population controls (N = 260,642) did not support association of this variant with obesity (odds ratio = 2.34, p-value = 2.59 × 10-3), highlighting the challenges of testing rare variant associations and the need for very large sample sizes. Further validation in cohorts with severe obesity and engineering the variants in model organisms will be needed to explore whether human variants in ANGPTL6 and other genes that lead to obesity when deleted in mice, do contribute to obesity. Such studies may yield druggable targets for weight loss therapies. © 2017 The Author(s).

The smelting of zinc was one of the most challenging technologies of the pre-modern world; indeed in the application of scientific techniques to industrial processes it anticipated modern industrial practice. Very different approaches to the problem evolved in different parts of the world. As the process required the condensation of the metal from a vapour, it is likely that some of the then current distillation practices might have provided an inspiration for the process adopted. Specifically, the techniques employed for the production of mercury may also have provided methodologies that could be adapted.

The opportunity was taken in 2010 to carry out a full scientific and technical examination of the brass head from Ife, popularly known as the Olokun head, first published in 1912 by Leo Frobenius, together with a selection of other Ife heads that came to London for exhibition at the British Museum. This was especially appropriate as on its last visit some 60 years previously, the Olokun head had been examined and condemned as a sand cast copy. The present study has established beyond doubt that the Olokun head is a hollow cire perdue or lost wax casting, very similar in technique and composition to the other heads. The balance of evidence suggests that this is the head unearthed at Ife in 1910. En 2010, une exposition de têtes Ife au British Museum à Londres a fourni l’opportunité de procéder à un examen scientifique et technique détaillé d’une tête en laiton, plus connue sous le nom de tête d’Olokun, et publiée par Léo Frobenius en 1912 ; une sélection d’autres têtes Ife exposées ont fait également l’objet d’analyses. La tête d’Olokun avait été étudiée et reléguée, soixante ans auparavant, au statut de simple copie obtenue par fonte au sable. Cette nouvelle approche, particulièrement bienvenue, établit sans aucun doute que la tête d’Olokun est une fonte à cire perdue, très similaire aux autres têtes en termes de technique et de composition. Par ailleurs, tout un faisceau d’éléments suggère qu’il s’agit bien de la tête mise au jour à Ife en 1910.Cet article livre les résultats du ré-examen technique et scientifique de la célèbre tête en laiton d’Olokun, originaire d’Ife (Nigéria), considérée en 1949 par William Fagg et Léon Underwood comme une copie réalisée par moulage de la tête originale découverte en 1910 par Leo Frobenius.La discussion s’articule autour de trois grandes parties. La première examine les nombreux arguments utilisés par W. Fagg et L. Underwood pour reléguer la tête au statut de simple copie. La seconde décrit la façon dont on pense actuellement que la tête a été coulée. Enfin, la troisième dévoile l’examen scientifique établissant son ancienneté probable, sa production en Afrique de l’Ouest, et sa ressemblance frappante avec d’autres têtes d’Ife.Parmi les nombreux points retenus par W. Fagg et L. Underwood, trois revêtent une certaine importance. Dans l’ensemble ils dénoncent la nature diffuse de la surface du métal et le manque de détails précis (les points a, b, f et g de Fagg et Underwood), alors attribués à la méthode de fonte au sable. En réalité, l’examen attentif a très vite démontré que l’origine de cette différence d’aspect résidait dans le fait que, contrairement aux autres têtes d’Ife présentes au British Museum de nombreux mois avant l’exposition – pour examen et nettoyage –, la tête d’Olokun n’était arrivée en Grande-Bretagne que la veille de son ouverture et n’avait, par conséquent, reçu qu’un traitement très superficiel. Sous la couche de cire appliquée à la hâte, la corrosion, la terre et même des restes du matériau de moulage d’origine ont subsisté, remplissant les interstices et brouillant les détails de la fonte (fig. 8).Une objection plus sérieuse (g) résidait dans le fait, qu’en certains endroits de la tête, des accrétions de matière de surface paraissaient être en métal, comme si on avait là la traduction dans le métal du moulage de résidus, de poussières et de traces de corrosion, ce qui aurait pu effectivement être un argument en faveur d’une copie moulée sur l’original. Cependant, l’examen approfondi des zones concernées a montré que la plupart de ces « moulages de poussière » sont en fait constitués de vraies poussières et de résidus de fonte (fig. 9). À la base du cimier, on distingue quelques gerces de métal et le décor du cimier lui-même est ­recouvert de métal (fig. 10), mais cela pourrait s’expliquer par le simple fait que l’argile utilisée pour le moulage n’était pas assez fine pour pénétrer profondément dans cet interstice, ou encore que la surface du moule avait été endommagée pendant la cuisson et la coulée.Leur point h nécessite également une explication. Ainsi W. Fagg et L. Underwood décrivent deux zones sur le front qu’ils attribuent à une ­tentative d’introduction de broches en fer dans un possible moule en plâtre. Cette interprétation est entièrement erronée. Pour que cela soit interprété comme la preuve que cette tête était une copie d’un original, le métal aurait dû être coulé par les canaux intérieurs dans l’original et ce que l’on voit dans le métal de la présente tête correspondrait alors au moulage des canaux de coulée de la tête originale. Toutefois ces canaux de coulée coupés contenaient encore les extrémités de broches de renforcement et par conséquent il s’agit bien, non de moulages de canaux, mais de vrais canaux qui pour une raison quelconque n’ont pas été utilisés. En outre l’examen indique que c’est la cire que l’on a coupée à cet endroit, et non le métal. L’explication la plus probable est que le moule a été assemblé, prêt à être chauffé, mais qu’il a subi un accident qui l’a endommagé avant le début de la coulée. Les canaux de cire originaux ont alors probablement dû être coupés et remplacés par deux autres à l’intérieur de la tête (fig. 2).Dans l’ensemble il est à noter que, dans leur discussion, W. Fagg et L. Underwood ne mentionnent aucune des principales caractéristiques qui permettent de distinguer les fontes au sable ou les fontes postérieures, telle une réduction de taille de la copie qui aurait pu être constatée. De même, la présence de traits tout aussi distinctifs de la fonte à cire perdue qui peuvent être observés sur la tête ne sont pas évoqués.L’examen scientifique a établi que le métal est sérieusement corrodé, avec une corrosion intergranulaire très importante, témoignant fortement d’un enfouissement prolongé (fig. 16 et 18). Les produits de corrosion sont les minéraux auxquels on peut s’attendre sur une véritable antiquité. Il y a aussi une contamination très superficielle de pigments synthétiques. Ces derniers sont identiques à ceux trouvés sur les moulages en plâtre des têtes réalisés au British Museum, lors de la présence de la tête d’Olokun en 1948.La composition élémentaire et isotopique du métal de la tête d’Olokun est similaire à celle des autres têtes d’Ife, ce qui suggère fortement qu’elle a été fabriquée à partir du même stock de métal. L’examen du noyau de la tête indique une composition similaire à celle de l’une des autres têtes échantillonnée pour comparaison (Willett & Sayre 2006). Plus significatif encore, une partie de la matière végétale utilisée comme remplissage du noyau de la tête d’Olokun provenait de plantes qui poussent uniquement en Afrique de l’Ouest, signe évident que la tête a été coulée dans cette région.Ainsi, dans l’ensemble, le réexamen jette un doute considérable sur le rapport de 1949. Il établit que la tête est certainement une fonte creuse à la cire perdue, probablement réalisée en fonte directe – bien qu’une fonte indirecte ne puisse pas être totalement exclue –, très similaire à celle mise en œuvre pour réaliser les autres têtes. L’ensemble de ces arguments suggère qu’il s’agit bien de la tête exhumée par L. Frobenius en 1910.

This paper, after outlining some of the more significant milestones through seven millennia of casting achievement and the historic literary sources, will concentrate on the more recent continuing traditional technologies of South Asia. The paper will conclude with an assessment of our present understanding of early casting methods elsewhere, notably those of Egypt, Greece and Rome.

Metal surfaces of objet d’art were usually kept highly polished in the past and chemical patination as a decorative technique was rare before the 19th century. The best known exceptions are the Japanese irogane alloys and their occidental precursors. Another less well known patinated metal are the bidri wares of India. The items are sand castings of an alloy containing ∼95% of zinc and 5% of copper. After casting the pieces are heavily inlaid with silver wires and foils and then treated to produce a rich black patina. Bidri wares are still made in quantity in the Deccan of central India, including at Bidar in the state of Karnataka, the traditional centre of the industry from which bidri takes its name. Zinc metal was first prepared in India ∼1000 years ago and so an association between zinc production and zinc artefacts seems natural. Stamps on the blade of a sword from the Thames, originally considered to be Anglo-Saxon, now place the sword stylistically in the La Tène II period (late third to early second century BC). X-ray fluorescence tests have shown that the gold-coloured foil covering the stamps consists of 80 per cent copper and 20 per cent zinc, this being the formula for brass. The sword therefore represents the earliest known use of brass in Britain.

The continuing improvements in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating technology mean that it is possible to work on ever smaller samples, which in turn, make an ever wider range of sample potentially available for dating. This paper discusses some of the difficulties arising with the interpretation of AMS dates obtained from carbon in iron. The overriding problem is that the carbon, now in chemical combination with the iron, could have come from a variety of sources with very different origins. These are now potentially an iressolvable mixture in the iron. For iron made over the last millennium, there are the additional problems associated with the use of both fossil fuel and biomass fuel in different stages of the iron making, leading to great confusion, especially with authenticity studies.

Two Millennia of the Sea-bourne metals trade with India

The purpose of this chapter is to establish the linkages among Business Excellence Models (BEMs), project sustainability, and project success. The particular focus is on how the BEM framework contributes to project sustainability as one element of project success. Although general sustainability definitions vary, most describe a broad perspective that encompasses economic, social, and environmental objectives. This broad perspective fits well with the concepts of both Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Total Quality Management (TQM). Business Excellence Models, with their origins in the TQM movement, provide a framework to address sustainability. Although much of the literature focuses on applying these concepts in a general organizational setting, they also apply to a project organization. Project success criteria can be expanded to include project sustainability, measured both at the time of project closing and later when the overall project benefits are evaluated.

Although firesetting is well recognized as one of the most ancient mining techniques for breaking up rocks, surprisingly little is known about the way in which it was practised. This article reviews not only the archaeological and historical evidence, but also the results of recent experimental studies relating the quantity of fuel burned to the rock disintegrated.

The faking and forgery of works of art and antiquities is probably now more extensive than ever before. The frauds are aided by new technologies, from ink jet printers to epoxy resins, and driven by the astronomic prices realised on the global market. This book aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the subject over a wide range of materials, emphasising how the fakes and forgeries are produced and how they may be detected by technical and scientific examination. The subject is exemplified by numerous case studies, some turning out not to be as conclusive as is sometimes believed. The book is aimed at those likely to have a serious interest in these investigations, be they curator, collector, conservator or scientist. Paul Craddock has recently retired from the Department of Conservation, Documentation and Science at the British Museum, where he was a materials scientist.

Present workings at India’s Kolar gold Field are well over 3000 metres deep, surpassed only by some gold mines in South Africa. But the history of gold mining in the region goes back to the early second millenium BC.

The first controlled use of fire in metallurgy dates from the eighth millennium ВС, when native copper was deliberately heated to form artifacts. Problems how to distinguish between native copper and smelted copper are addressed, especially what concerns the role of iron in copper. It is shown that the technological roots of metallurgy have nothing in common with pottery kilns. Metallurgy is an independent development. The decisive factor was the introduction of charcoal that was important to produce reducing conditions during firing. The earliest stages in metallurgy are represented by a non-slagging process. Reduction of ores was carried out in crucibles as exemplified by finds from Anatolia, Iran, Jordan, and the Iberian Peninsula. Special attention is paid to the putative early stages of metallurgy claimed to exist at Timna. The so-called Neolithic and Chalcolithic copper smelting there is critically discussed in the light of radio carbon data. Wind-powered furnaces played a major role in Early Bronze Age copper metallurgy, as exemplified by sites in the Feinan-area, in Wadi Dara, Egypt, and at numerous sites in the Aegean. Later, artificial air supply by bellows and tuyeres was introduced., La premiere utilisation de feu contrôlé dans la métallurgie remonte au 8e millénaire avant J. C. quand le cuivre natif est délibérément chauffé pour donner forme à des objets. Les questions qui se posent pour distinguer le cuivre natif du cuivre fondu sont soulevées ici, en particulier en ce qui concerne le rôle que joue le fer dans le cuivre. Il est montré que sur le plan technologique, à ses racines, la métallurgie n 'a rien de commun avec les fours destinés à la cuisson de la poterie. La métallurgie connaît un développement indépendant. Le facteur décisif est l'introduction du charbon qui permet de produire une atmosphère réductrice pendant la chauffe.
