1. Somatic embryogenesis from rhizome explants of Cymbopogon winterianus

Abstract: Plantlet regeneration through indirect somatic embryogenesis was attempted from rhizome derived callus of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt (cv. Jorlab2). Optimum callus was induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 4 mg dm-3 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Initially the callus was friable, shiny white and watery in nature. After subculturing on MS medium containing 2,4-D and kinetin (Kn), callus was transferred onto the MS medium supplemented with 2,4 -D, Kn and coconut water to induce somatic embryogenesis. Optimum somatic embryogenesis (78.33 %) was achieved on MS medium containing 3.0 mg dm-3 2,4-D and 0.5 mg dm-3 Kn. High frequency (65 %) plantlet conversion from embryos was achieved in MS medium supplemented with 2 mg dm-3 N6-benzyladenine (BA), 0.5 mg dm-3 Kn, 0.2 mg dm-3 calcium pantothenate and 0.2 mg dm-3 biotin.

Abstract: In this retrospective cohort study of 94 595 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2–positive cases, we developed and validated an algorithm to assess the association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity and long-term complications (stroke, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism/deep vein thrombosis, heart failure, and mortality). COVID-19 severity was associated with a greater risk of experiencing a long-term complication 31–120 days postinfection. Most incident events occurred 31–60 days postinfection and diminished after day 91, except heart failure for severe patients and death for moderate patients, which peaked on days 91–120. Understanding the differential impact of COVID-19 severity on long-term events provides insight into possible intervention modalities and critical prevention strategies.

Abstract: Tourism especially nature based tourism is increasing throughout the world day by day. The Sundarbans Reserve Forest (SRF) in Bangladesh is a suitable place for developing tourism. The purpose of the study was to find out the attitudes of local people’s towards community based eco-tourism (CBET) in the Sundarbans. The study was carried out by a questionnaire survey with purposive selection based on diversity of occupation and sex in that area. A 5- point rating Likert scale was used to measures the local people’s attitude towards community based eco-tourism. Most of the people of the study are poorly based on income and depends on the forest as well as are fisherman among male and housewife among women. Natural beauty of this area, scope to watch wildlife, tourist security, house or eco-cottage quality, toilet and bathing facilities are favorable as well as communication and infrastructure facilities are an obstacle for developing CBET here. CBET will increase alternative job opportunities and income as well as it will reduce disturbance of forest and illegal harvesting according to the respondents. Forest Department is cooperative and tourists are more conscious now than before. People are now satisfied with CBET and keen to involve with this. This research is important for tourism policymakers in Bangladesh for their decisions.

Abstract: We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new system LiRhMnO$_{4}$ (LRMO) through x-ray diffraction, bulk magnetization, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. LRMO crystallizes in the cubic space group $\mathit{Fd}$$\bar{3}$$\mathit{m}$. From the DC susceptibility data, we obtained the Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrm{\theta}_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -26 K and Curie constant $\mathit{C}$ = 1.79 Kcm$^{3}$/mol suggesting antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn$^{4+}$ ions with an effective spin $\mathit{S}$ = $\frac{3}{2}$. At $\mathit{H}$ = 50 Oe, the field cooled and zero-field cooled magnetizations bifurcate at a freezing temperature, $T_{f}$ = 4.45 K, which yields the frustration parameter $\mathit{f=\frac{\mid\theta_{CW}\mid}{T_{f}}}>$5. AC susceptibility, shows a cusp-like peak at around $T_{f}$, with the peak position shifting as a function of the driving frequency, confirming a spin-glass-like transition in LRMO. LRMO also shows typical spin-glass characteristics such as memory effect, aging effect and relaxation. In the heat capacity, there is no sharp anomaly down to 2 K indicative of long-range ordering. The field sweep $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show broadening with decreasing temperature without any spectral line shift. Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. In this paper, we present the experimental signature of ice optical anisotropy observed in IceCube light-emitting diode (LED) calibration data, the theory and parameterization of the birefringence effect, the fitting procedures of these parameterizations to experimental data, and the inferred crystal properties.

Abstract: We investigate via exact diagonalization of finite clusters the electronic structure and magnetism of ${\mathrm{M}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ dimers in the mixed-valence hexagonal perovskites ${\mathrm{A}}_{3}{\mathrm{B}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\mathrm{M}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ for various different fillings of $4d$ and $5d$ transition-metal M ions. We find that the magnetic moments of such dimers are determined by a subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, Hund's coupling, and Coulomb repulsion, as well as the electron filling of the M ions. Most importantly, the magnetic moments are anisotropic and temperature dependent. This behavior is a result of spin-orbit coupling, magnetic field effects, and the existence of several nearly degenerate electronic configurations whose proximity allows the occupation of excited states already at room temperature. This analysis is consistent with experimental susceptibility measurements for a variety of dimer-based materials. Furthermore, we perform a survey of ${\mathrm{A}}_{3}{\mathrm{B}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\mathrm{M}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ materials and propose ground-state phase diagrams for the experimentally relevant M fillings of ${d}^{4.5}$, ${d}^{3.5}$, and ${d}^{2.5}$. Finally, our results show that the usually applied Curie-Weiss law with a constant magnetic moment cannot be used in these spin-orbit-coupled materials.

Abstract: $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ nuclear magnetic resonance and terahertz (THz) spectroscopies are used to probe magnetic excitations and their field dependence in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$. Spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/{T}_{1}$) measured down to 100 mK indicates the gapless nature of the excitations at low fields (below ${H}_{c}\ensuremath{\simeq}2.8$ T), in contrast to the gapped magnon excitations found in the honeycomb Kitaev magnet $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ at zero applied magnetic field. At higher temperatures in $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}, 1/{T}_{1}$ passes through a broad maximum without any clear anomaly at the N\'eel temperature ${T}_{N}\ensuremath{\simeq}38$ K, suggesting the abundance of low-energy excitations that are indeed observed as two peaks in the THz spectra; both correspond to zone-center magnon excitations. At higher fields (above ${H}_{c}$), an excitation gap opens, and a redistribution of the THz spectral weight is observed without any indication of an excitation continuum, in contrast to $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ where an excitation continuum was reported.

Abstract: Detailed magnetization, specific heat, and $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on single crystals of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ are reported. At high temperatures, anisotropy of the magnetization is reflected by the different Curie-Weiss temperatures for different field directions, in agreement with the combination of a ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction ($K$) and a negative off-diagonal anisotropy ($\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$) as two leading terms in the spin Hamiltonian. At low temperatures, magnetic fields applied along $a$ or $c$ have only a weak effect on the system and reduce the N\'eel temperature from 38 K at 0 T to about 35.5 K at 14 T, with no field-induced transitions observed up to 58 T on a powder sample. In contrast, the field applied along $b$ causes a drastic reduction in the ${T}_{N}$ that vanishes around ${H}_{c}=2.8\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$, giving way to a crossover toward a quantum paramagnetic state. $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ NMR measurements in this field-induced state reveal a gradual line broadening and a continuous evolution of the line shift with temperature, suggesting the development of local magnetic fields. The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows a peak around the crossover temperature 40 K and follows power-law behavior below this temperature.

Abstract: Here we present the structural and magnetic properties of the new honeycomb material ${\mathrm{Ag}}_{3}{\mathrm{LiMn}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$. The system $\mathrm{Ag}[{\mathrm{Li}}_{1/3}{\mathrm{Mn}}_{2/3}]{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ belongs to a quaternary $3R$-delafossite family and crystallizes in a monoclinic symmetry with space group $C\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}2/m$, and the magnetic ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}(S=3/2)$ ions form a honeycomb network in the $ab$ plane. An anomaly around 50 K and the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling (Curie-Weiss temperature ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{CW}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{-}51\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$) were inferred from our magnetic susceptibility data. The magnetic specific heat clearly manifests the onset of magnetic ordering in the vicinity of 48 K, and the recovered magnetic entropy, above the ordering temperature, falls short of the expected value, implying the presence of short-range magnetic correlations. An asymmetric Bragg peak (characteristic of two-dimensional order), seen in neutron diffraction, gains intensity even above the ordering temperature, thus showing the existence of short-range spin correlations. Our electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments corroborate the bulk magnetic data. Additionally, the ESR line broadening upon approaching the ordering temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$ could be described in terms of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario with ${T}_{\mathrm{KT}}=40(1)\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. The $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ NMR line shift probed as a function of temperature tracks the static susceptibility (${K}_{\mathrm{iso}}$) of magnetically coupled ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}$ ions. The $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/{T}_{1}$) exhibits a sharp decrease below about 50 K. A critical divergence is absent at the ordering temperature perhaps because of the filtering out of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations at the Li site, i.e., at the centers of the hexagons in the honeycomb network. Combining our bulk and local probe measurements, we establish the presence of an ordered ground state for the honeycomb system ${\mathrm{Ag}}_{3}{\mathrm{LiMn}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$. Our ab initio electronic structure calculations suggest that in the $ab$ plane, the nearest-neighbor (NN) exchange interaction is strong and AFM, while the next-NN and the third-NN exchange interactions are FM and AFM, respectively. The interplanar exchange interaction is found to be relatively small. In the absence of any frustration the system is expected to exhibit long-range, AFM order, in agreement with experiment.

Abstract: We have investigated the thermodynamic and local magnetic properties of the Mott insulating system Ag$_{3}$LiRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$ containing Ru$^{4+}$ (4$d$$^{4}$) for novel magnetism. The material crystallizes in a monoclinic $C2/m$ structure with RuO$_{6}$ octahedra forming an edge-shared two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with limited stacking order along the $c$-direction. The large negative Curie-Weiss temperature ($\theta_{CW}$ = -57 K) suggests antiferromagnetic interactions among Ru$^{4+}$ ions though magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity show no indication of magnetic long-range order down to 1.8 K and 0.4 K, respectively. $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift follows the bulk susceptibility between 120-300 K and levels off below 120 K. Together with a power-law behavior in the temperature dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate between 0.2 and 2 K, it suggest dynamic spin correlations with gapless excitations. Electronic structure calculations suggest an $S = 1$ description of the Ru-moments and the possible importance of further neighbour interactions as also bi-quadratic and ring-exchange terms in determining the magnetic properties. Analysis of our $\mu$SR data indicates spin freezing below 5 K but the spins remain on the borderline between static and dynamic magnetism even at 20 mK.

Abstract: Single-crystal x-ray diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) are used to probe pressure evolution of the triangular spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$. The rhombohedral crystal structure is retained up to at least 10 GPa and shows a nearly uniform compression along both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, whereas local distortions caused by the random distribution of Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ remain mostly unchanged. The $\mu$SR data confirm persistent spin dynamics up to 2.6 GPa and down to 250 mK with no change in the muon relaxation rate. Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric muon neutrinos are produced by meson decays in cosmic-ray-induced air showers. The flux depends on meteorological quantities such as the air temperature, which affects the density of air. Competition between decay and re-interaction of those mesons in the first particle production generations gives rise to a higher neutrino flux when the air density in the stratosphere is lower, corresponding to a higher temperature. A measurement of a temperature dependence of the atmospheric $$\nu _{\mu }$$ ν μ flux provides a novel method for constraining hadronic interaction models of air showers. It is particularly sensitive to the production of kaons. Studying this temperature dependence for the first time requires a large sample of high-energy neutrinos as well as a detailed understanding of atmospheric properties. We report the significant ( $$> 10 \; \sigma $$ > 10 σ ) observation of a correlation between the rate of more than 260,000 neutrinos, detected by IceCube between 2012 and 2018, and atmospheric temperatures of the stratosphere, measured by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA’s AQUA satellite. For the observed 10 $$\%$$ % seasonal change of effective atmospheric temperature we measure a 3.5(3) $$\%$$ % change in the muon neutrino flux. This observed correlation deviates by about 2-3 standard deviations from the expected correlation of 4.3 $$\%$$ % as obtained from theoretical predictions under the assumption of various hadronic interaction models.

Abstract: We report electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy results on the double perovskite ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$. On general grounds, this material is expected to be nonmagnetic due to the strong coupling of the spin and orbital momenta of ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{5+}$ ($5{d}^{4}$) ions. However, controversial experimental reports on either strong antiferromagnetism with static order at low temperatures or just a weakly paramagnetic behavior have triggered a discussion on the breakdown of the generally accepted scenario of the strongly spin-orbit coupled ground states in the $5{d}^{4}$ iridates and the emergence of a novel exotic magnetic state. Our data evidence that the magnetism of the studied material is solely due to a few percent of ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{4+}$ and ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{6+}$ magnetic defects while the regular ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{5+}$ sites remain nonmagnetic. Remarkably, the defect ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{6+}$ species manifest magnetic correlations in the ESR spectra at $T\ensuremath{\lesssim}20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$, suggesting a long-range character of superexchange in the double perovskites as proposed by recent theories.

Abstract: Temperature-pressure phase diagram of the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate β-Li_{2}IrO_{3} is explored using magnetization, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and muon spin rotation measurements, as well as single-crystal x-ray diffraction under pressure and ab initio calculations. The Neel temperature of β-Li_{2}IrO_{3} increases with the slope of 0.9 K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field H_{c} reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order. At 1.4 GPa, the ordered state breaks down upon a first-order transition, giving way to a new ground state marked by the coexistence of dynamically correlated and frozen spins. This partial freezing in the absence of any conspicuous structural defects may indicate the classical nature of the resulting pressure-induced spin liquid, an observation paralleled to the increase in the nearest-neighbor off-diagonal exchange Γ under pressure.

Abstract: We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the elementary magnetic excitations in ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$ and ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$---the two most intensively discussed candidates for a new type of magnetic instability caused by exciton condensation. For both materials, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir ${L}_{3}$ edge reveals sharp excitations around 370 and 650 meV energy loss, which we identify as triplet and quintet spin-orbit excitons. While the momentum-dependent RIXS spectra reveal that both the triplet and the quintet propagate coherently within the nonmagnetic background of the singlet sites, these modes remain fully gapped. The Ir-Ir exchange interactions in both double perovskites are therefore not strong enough to overcome the magnetic gap and, hence, our results exclude an intrinsic magnetic instability due to a condensation of magnetic excitations for both ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$ and ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$.

Abstract: We report on the interplay of $3d$- and $5d$-sublattice magnetism in polycrystalline samples of the double perovskite substitution series ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{Zn}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Co}}_{x}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{6}$. Powder x-ray diffraction reveals no major structural changes within the series. In magnetization measurements, a gradual shift of the transition temperature from ${\mathrm{T}}_{N} \ensuremath{\approx}91$ K for the Co parent compound to ${\mathrm{T}}_{N} \ensuremath{\approx}8.7$ K for the Zn parent compound is observed. The data on the Zn-rich members of the substitution series indicate that this is accompanied by changing roles of the $3d$ sublattice of ${\mathrm{Co}}^{2+}$ and the strongly spin-orbit coupled $5d$-sublattice of ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{4+}$ with its ${\mathrm{j}}_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ ground state, as a function of the Co/Zn ratio. Temperature-dependent specific-heat studies revealed a reduced magnetic entropy, pointing towards a large spin-orbit coupling and orbital contribution in the system.

Abstract: We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (LZVO) through x-ray diffraction, dc and ac susceptibility, magnetic relaxation, aging, memory effect, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A Curie-Weiss fit of the dc susceptibility $\chi_{\mathrm{dc}}$($\mathit{T}$) yields a Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrm{\theta}_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -185 K. This suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among the magnetic vanadium ions. The dc and ac susceptibility data indicate the spin-glass behavior below a freezing temperature $T_{f}$ $\simeq$ 3 K. The frequency dependence of the $T_{f}$ is characterized by the Vogel-Fulcher law and critical dynamic scaling behavior or power law. From both fitting, we obtained the value of the characteristic angular frequency $\omega_{0}$ $\approx$ 3.56$\times$10$^{6}$ Hz, the dynamic exponent $\mathit{zv}$ $\approx$ 2.65, and the critical time constant $\tau_{0}$ $\approx$ 1.82$\times$10$^{-6}$ s, which falls in the conventional range for typical cluster spin-glass (CSG) systems. The value of relative shift in freezing temperature $\delta T_{f}$ $\simeq$ 0.039 supports a CSG ground states. We also found aging phenomena and memory effects in LZVO. The asymmetric response of the magnetic relaxation below $T_{f}$ supports the hierarchical model. Heat capacity data show no long-range or short-range ordering down to 2 K. Only about 25% magnetic entropy change $(\Delta S_{\mathrm{m}})$ signifies the presence of strong frustration in the system. The $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show a shift and broadening with decreasing temperature. 32. Somaclonal variation among somatic embryo derived plants — Evaluation of agronomically important somaclones and detection of genetic changes by RAPD in Cymbopogon winterianus

Abstract: A total of one hundred five plants of Cymbopogon winterianus derived from indirect somatic embryogenesis were established in the field. Extensive somaclonal variation was noticed within these plants for all eight agronomic characters such as plant height, diameter of bush, number of tiller/clump, number of leaves/clump, leaf length, leaf breadth, weight of 100 leaves and oil content in relation to the donor parent. Significant variations were also recorded for two major constituents of essential oil such as citronellal and geraniol in some selected somaclones. Ten somaclones that were retained improved oil content and quality in initial screening and, in a replicated trial, were further assessed for their stability in the field for four clonal propagations. Out of the ten superior somaclones only five superior somaclones (SC1, SC2, SC3, SC6 and SC10) which showed relative stability both in oil content and quality were subjected to random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Out of the eighteen primers used, ten primers revealed polymorphism showing distinctly different banding patterns in the five improved somaclones, which were equally prominent in their differences from the control. Out of the 44 polymorphic bands, 30 were parental bands which were missing from some somaclonal progenies and 14 were novel non-parental bands which were detected only in some somaclones that confirmed the presence of genetic changes due to somaclonal variation.

Abstract: Using thermodynamic measurements, neutron diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin relaxation, we establish putative quantum spin-liquid behavior in ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{3}{\mathrm{InIr}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$, where unpaired electrons are localized on mixed-valence ${\mathrm{Ir}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ dimers with ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{4.5+}$ ions. Despite the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature on the order of 10 K, neither long-range magnetic order nor spin freezing are observed down to at least 20 mK, such that spins are short-range correlated and dynamic over nearly three decades in temperature. Quadratic power-law behavior of both the spin-lattice relaxation rate and specific heat indicates the gapless nature of the ground state. We envisage that this exotic behavior may be related to an unprecedented combination of the triangular and buckled honeycomb geometries of nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in the mixed-valence setting.

Abstract: Recently, the iridate double perovskite ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$ has attracted considerable attention due to the report of unexpected magnetism in this ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{5+}$ $(5{d}^{4})$ material, in which according to the ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ model, a nonmagnetic ground state is expected. However, in recent works on polycrystalline samples of the series ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$ no indication of magnetic transitions have been found. We present a structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic characterization of ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$ single crystals, with emphasis on the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat. As determined by x-ray diffraction, the ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$ single crystals have a cubic structure, with space group $Fm\overline{3}m$. In agreement with the expected nonmagnetic ground state of ${\mathrm{Ir}}^{5+}$ $({5d}^{4})$ in ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{YIrO}}_{6}$, no magnetic transition is observed down to 430 mK. Moreover, our results suggest that the low-temperature anomaly observed in the specific heat is not related to the onset of long-range magnetic order. Instead, it is identified as a Schottky anomaly caused by paramagnetic impurities present in the sample, of the order of $n\ensuremath{\sim}0.5(2)%$. These impurities lead to non-negligible spin correlations, which nonetheless, are not associated with long-range magnetic ordering.

Abstract: Ba2YIrO6, a Mott insulator, with four valence electrons in Ir5+ d-shell (5d 4) is supposed to be non-magnetic, with J eff = 0, within the atomic physics picture. However, recent suggestions of non-zero magnetism have raised some fundamental questions about its origin. We focus on the phonon dynamics, probed via Raman scattering, as a function of temperature and different incident photon energies, as an external perturbation. Our studies reveal strong renormalization of the phonon self-energy parameters and integrated intensity for first-order modes, especially redshift of the few first-order modes with decreasing temperature and anomalous softening of modes associated with IrO6 octahedra, as well as high energy Raman bands attributed to the strong anharmonic phonons and coupling with orbital excitations. The distinct renormalization of second-order Raman bands with respect to their first-order counterpart suggest that higher energy Raman bands have significant contribution from orbital excitations. Our observation indicates that strong anharmonic phonons coupled with electronic/orbital degrees of freedom provides a knob for tuning the conventional electronic levels for 5d-orbitals, and this may give rise to non-zero magnetism as postulated in recent theoretical calculations with rich magnetic phases.

Abstract: The cubic double perovskite Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ has been investigated by the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance ($^{89}$Y NMR) and muon spin rotation (muSR). Both methods confirm the absence of magnetic long-range order in this compound but find evidence for diluted localized paramagnetic moments. NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements suggest a slowing down of localized spin moments at low temperatures. An increase of the muSR spin-lattice relaxation rate lambda confirms the presence of weak magnetism in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ . However, these findings cannot be explained by the recently suggested excitonic type of magnetism. Instead, they point towards tiny amounts of localized paramagnetic spin centers leading to this magnetic response on the background of a simple nonmagnetic ground state of the 5d$^4$ ($J=0)$ electronic configuration of Ir$^{5+}$., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Abstract High-energy tau neutrinos are rarely produced in atmospheric cosmic-ray showers or at cosmic particle accelerators, but are expected to emerge during neutrino propagation over cosmic distances due to flavor mixing. When high energy tau neutrinos interact inside the IceCube detector, two spatially separated energy depositions may be resolved, the first from the charged current interaction and the second from the tau lepton decay. We report a novel analysis of 7.5 years of IceCube data that identifies two candidate tau neutrinos among the 60 “High-Energy Starting Events” (HESE) collected during that period. The HESE sample offers high purity, all-sky sensitivity, and distinct observational signatures for each neutrino flavor, enabling a new measurement of the flavor composition. The measured astrophysical neutrino flavor composition is consistent with expectations, and an astrophysical tau neutrino flux is indicated at 2.8 $$\sigma $$ σ significance.

Abstract: The origin of high-energy galactic cosmic rays is yet to be understood, but some galactic cosmic-ray accelerators can accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma-rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multimessenger analysis that combines gamma-rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 yr of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that, for five of the sources, the gamma-ray emission observed by HAWC cannot be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma-rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multimessenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established, which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and 10 yr of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach, which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses, and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are ∼3% and ∼9% for the time-averaged and time-dependent cases, respectively.

Abstract: Neutrino flares in the sky are searched for in data collected by IceCube between 2011 and 2021 May. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube’s previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data set is statistically independent of the track data sets, and while inferior in angular resolution, the low-background nature makes it competitive and complementary to previous searches. No statistically significant flare of neutrino emission was observed in an all-sky scan. Upper limits are calculated on neutrino flares of varying duration from 1 hr to 100 days. Furthermore, constraints on the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux are presented, showing that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for 10–1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p -value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p -value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at tera electronvolt to peta electronvolt energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract: IceCube alert events are neutrinos with a moderate-to-high probability of having astrophysical origin. In this study, we analyze 11 yr of IceCube data and investigate 122 alert events and a selection of high-energy tracks detected between 2009 and the end of 2021. This high-energy event selection (alert events + high-energy tracks) has an average probability of ≥0.5 of being of astrophysical origin. We search for additional continuous and transient neutrino emission within the high-energy events’ error regions. We find no evidence for significant continuous neutrino emission from any of the alert event directions. The only locally significant neutrino emission is the transient emission associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056, with a local significance of 3 σ , which confirms previous IceCube studies. When correcting for 122 test positions, the global p -value is 0.156 and compatible with the background hypothesis. We constrain the total continuous flux emitted from all 122 test positions at 100 TeV to be below 1.2 × 10 ^−15 (TeV cm ^2 s) ^−1 at 90% confidence assuming an E ^−2 spectrum. This corresponds to 4.5% of IceCube’s astrophysical diffuse flux. Overall, we find no indication that alert events in general are linked to lower-energetic continuous or transient neutrino emission.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has been continuously taking data to search for ${ \mathcal O }(0.5\mbox{--}10)$ s long neutrino bursts since 2007. Even if a Galactic core-collapse supernova is optically obscured or collapses to a black hole instead of exploding, it will be detectable via the ${ \mathcal O }(10)$ MeV neutrino burst emitted during the collapse. We discuss a search for such events covering the time between 2008 April 17 and 2019 December 31. Considering the average data taking and analysis uptime of 91.7% after all selection cuts, this is equivalent to 10.735 yr of continuous data taking. In order to test the most conservative neutrino production scenario, the selection cuts were optimized for a model based on an 8.8 solar mass progenitor collapsing to an O–Ne–Mg core. Conservative assumptions on the effects of neutrino oscillations in the exploding star were made. The final selection cut was set to ensure that the probability to detect such a supernova within the Milky Way exceeds 99%. No such neutrino burst was found in the data after performing a blind analysis. Hence, a 90% C.L. upper limit on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to distances of ≈25 kpc was determined to be 0.23 yr ^−1 . For the more distant Magellanic Clouds, only high neutrino luminosity supernovae will be detectable by IceCube, unless external information on the burst time is available. We determined a model-independent limit by parameterizing the dependence on the neutrino luminosity and the energy spectrum.

Abstract: We report the structural and magnetic properties of the $4d$ ($M$ = Rh) based and $5d$ ($M$ = Ir) based systems ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{3}{M}_{x}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{3\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ (nominally $x=0.5$, 1). The studied compositions were found to crystallize in a hexagonal structure with the centrosymmetric space group $P{6}_{3}/mmc$. The structures comprise of ${A}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ polyhedra [with the $A$ site (possibly) statistically occupied by $M$ and Ti] in which pairs of transition metal ions are stacked along the crystallographic $c$ axis. These pairs form triangular bilayers in the $ab$ plane. The magnetic Rh and Ir ions occupy these bilayers, diluted by Ti ions even for $x=1$. These bilayers are separated by a triangular layer which is dominantly occupied by Ti ions. From magnetization measurements we infer strong antiferromagnetic couplings for all of the materials but the absence of any spin-freezing or spin-ordering down to 2 K. Further, specific heat measurements down to 0.35 K show no sign of a phase transition for any of the compounds. Based on these thermodynamic measurements we propose the emergence of a quantum spin liquid ground state for ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{3}{\mathrm{Rh}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$, and ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{3}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{2.5}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$, in addition to the already reported ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{3}{\mathrm{IrTi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$.

Abstract: The coincidence resolving time (CRT) of scintillation detectors is the parameter determining noise reduction in time-of-flight PET. We derive an analytical CRT model based on the statistical distribution of photons for two different prototype scintillators. For the first one, characterized by single exponential decay, CRT is proportional to the decay time and inversely proportional to the number of photons, with a square root dependence on the trigger level. For the second scintillator prototype, characterized by exponential rise and decay, CRT is proportional to the square root of the product of rise time and decay time divided by the doubled number of photons, and it is nearly independent of the trigger level. This theory is verified by measurements of scintillation time constants, light yield and CRT on scintillator sticks. Trapping effects are taken into account by defining an effective decay time. We show that in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, CRT is as important as patient dose, imaging time or PET system sensitivity. The noise reduction effect of better timing resolution is verified and visualized by Monte Carlo simulation of a NEMA image quality phantom.
