Abstract: Abstract New developments in liquid scintillators, high-efficiency, fast photon detectors, and chromatic photon sorting have opened up the possibility for building a large-scale detector that can discriminate between Cherenkov and scintillation signals. Such a detector could reconstruct particle direction and species using Cherenkov light while also having the excellent energy resolution and low threshold of a scintillator detector. Situated deep underground, and utilizing new techniques in computing and reconstruction, this detector could achieve unprecedented levels of background rejection, enabling a rich physics program spanning topics in nuclear, high-energy, and astrophysics, and across a dynamic range from hundreds of keV to many GeV. The scientific program would include observations of low- and high-energy solar neutrinos, determination of neutrino mass ordering and measurement of the neutrino CP-violating phase $$\delta $$ δ , observations of diffuse supernova neutrinos and neutrinos from a supernova burst, sensitive searches for nucleon decay and, ultimately, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay, with sensitivity reaching the normal ordering regime of neutrino mass phase space. This paper describes Theia, a detector design that incorporates these new technologies in a practical and affordable way to accomplish the science goals described above.

Abstract: We summarize the evidence for DM-like anomalies in neutron multiplicity spectra collected underground with Pb targets by three independent experiments: NEMESIS (at 210 m.w.e.) NMDS (at 583 m.w.e.), and ZEPLIN-II (at 2850 m.w.e.). A new analysis shows small but persistent anomalies at high neutron multiplicities. Adjusted for differences in detection efficiencies, the positions of the anomalies are consistent between the three systems. Also, the intensities match when corrected for the acquisition time and estimated detection efficiency. While the three measurements are inconclusive when analyzed separately, together, they exclude a statistical fluke to better than one in a million. To prove the existence of the anomalies above the 5-sigma discovery threshold, we propose to upgrade the current NEMESIS setup. The upgrade concept and the critical components of the new experiment are described. The upgraded setup would already acquire the needed data sample during the first year of operation. Additional information, vital for the physics interpretation of the analysis, will be obtained with a Cu target.

Abstract: We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination. Abstract: A new experiment collects data, since November 2019, at a depth of 210 m.w.e. in the Callio Lab in the Pyhasalmi mine in Finland. The setup, called NEMESIS (New Emma MEasurementS Including neutronS), incorporates infrastructure from the EMMA experiment with neutron and large-area plastic scintillator detectors. The experiment’s primary aim is to combine muon tracking with position-sensitive neutron detection to measure precision yields, multiplicities, and lateral distributions of high-multiplicity neutron events induced by cosmic muons in various materials. The data are relevant for background evaluation of the deep-underground searches for Dark Matter (DM), neutrino-less double beta decay, etc. Preliminary analysis revealed anomalies in muon-suppressed neutron multiplicity spectra collected during a 344-day run (live time) with a 565 kg Pb target. The spectra, otherwise well described by an exponential fit, show three peaks at high multiplicities. Although still at a low statistical significance, these small excesses match the outcome of an earlier measurement. The nature of the anomalies remains unclear, but, in principle, they may be a signature of self-annihilation of a WIMP with a mass close to 13 GeV/c2. With that assumption, the expected cross-section would be around 10−42 cm2 for Spin-Dependent or 10−46 cm2 for Spin Independent interactions. We propose verifying this hypothesis with an upgraded NEMESIS experiment, able to collect an order of magnitude more data than this measurement. Based on the statistical uncertainty, analysis of the event rate indicates that cross-section limits for DM mass range of approximately 3-40 GeV/c2 can be investigated with such a setup.

Abstract: High energy particles reaching the Earth’s atmosphere are known as cosmic rays. As a result of interactions with nuclei of air molecules, cosmic rays induce showers of secondary particles, which can be divided into 3 components: electromagnetic, hadronic and muonic components. The Experiment with Multi Muon Array (EMMA), located at the depth of 75 m in the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland, investigates the muonic component of the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) to deduce the direction, energy, and the mass of the primary cosmic ray particles. In this paper we give a concise description and methodology used by EMMA followed by a brief review of the C14 experiment. Finally, we review the feasibility to host in the Pyhäsalmi mine a future large-scale liquid-based neutrino detector and implement a novel concept of acoustic detection of neutrinos in bedrock utilizing the network of many kilometers of boreholes surrounding the now-exploited ore body. Abstract: The residual nuclei produced in the spallation reaction of Xe-136 nuclei at 200A MeV on protons have been studied by measuring the isotopic distributions for the elements from cadmium (Z = 48) to cesium (Z = 55) by using the fragment separator (FRS) spectrometer at GSI and the inverse kinematics technique. This is one of the few measurements performed at such a low projectile energy, close to the validity limit for intranuclear cascade models such as INCL or ISABEL. The experimental results have been compared to these intranuclear cascade codes coupled to the evaporation code ABLA. Both code combinations reproduce qualitatively the measured isotopic distributions; however, both underestimate the production of residues with mass numbers between 126 and 134. The measured cross sections are of interest for the planning of future radioactive beam or neutron source facilities.

Abstract: The experiment was performed at the GSI facility in Darmstadt (Germany).; Around 270 medium-mass residual nuclei, formed in spallation reactions induced by 136Xe projectiles impinging on a liquid hydrogen target at 500 AMeV, have been unambiguously identified at GSI using the magnetic spectrometer FRS. Abstract: An experiment observing underground muons originating from cosmic-ray air showers is under preparation in the Pyhaesalmi mine, Finland. The aim is to cover an area of about 200-300 m{sup 2}, and the detector setup is capable of measuring the muon multiplicity and their lateral distribution. The detector is placed at a depth of about 85 m (corresponding about 240 m w.e.), which gives a threshold energy of muons of about 45 GeV. The detection of the multimuon events is motivated by partly unknown composition of the primary cosmic rays in the energy region of 10{sup 15}-10{sup 16} eV, i.e., the knee region. In addition, by measuring only the higher energy muons of the air shower, the lowest energy muons being filtered out by the rock overburden, the data is sensitive also to the studies of the upper parts of the air shower. The experiment will be constructed mainly using drift chambers used previously in LEP detectors at CERN, but it can also be expanded using plastic scintillator detectors. The prototype detector is expected to be running in the beginning of 2006, and the full-size detector by the end of 2007.

Abstract: Residual fragment production in reactions induced by $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ projectiles impinging on a liquid deuterium target at $500A$ MeV has been measured at GSI. Projectile residues were unambiguously identified in atomic and mass numbers using the Fragment Separator as high-resolution zero-degree spectrometer. The isotopic production yields of these residuals were used to benchmark reference model calculations describing spallation reactions. In particular the energy dissipated in these reactions was assessed by comparing the production yields measured in this work with the ones obtained in reactions induced by $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$ projectiles on protons at $1000A$ and $500A$ MeV.

Abstract: Spallation reactions on fissile nuclei represent an appropriate tool to investigate dissipative effects in nuclear fission. In this work, we have studied transient and dissipative effects in proton- and deuteron-induced fission on Pb208 at 500A MeV. A dedicated experimental setup optimized for inverse kinematics measurements made it possible to identify in atomic number both fission fragments with high resolution, and reconstruct the charge of the fissioning system. We could then determine the width of the fission fragments charge distribution as well as partial fission cross sections, both as a function of the charge of the fissioning system. These two complementary observables permitted us to investigate the dynamics of the process at small deformation, i.e., from the ground state to the saddle point. The description of these observables with advanced model calculations reveals the influence of the nuclear dissipation in the fission process at high excitation energy and in particular its manifestation through transient time effects.

Abstract: The production cross sections of fragmentation-evaporation residues in the reaction Pb+p at 500 A MeV have been measured using the inverse-kinematics method and the FRS spectrometer (GSI). Fragments were identified in nuclear charge using ionisation chambers. The mass identification was performed event-by-event using the Bρ-TOF-ΔE technique. Although partially-unresolved ionic charge states induced an ambiguity on the mass of some heavy fragments, production rates could be obtained with a high accuracy by systematically accounting for the polluting ionic charge states. The contribution of multiple reactions in the target was subtracted using a new, partly self-consistent code. The isobaric distributions are found to have a shape very close to the one observed in experiments at higher energy. Kinematic properties of the fragments were also measured. The total and the isotopic cross sections, including charge-pickup cross sections, are in good agreement with previous measurements and models. Abstract: Fission fragments from 1 A GeV 238U ions impinging a hydrogen target are investigated by using the fragment separator FRS for magnetic selection of reaction products including ray-tracing, and ΔE-ToF techniques. On the basis of the kinematics of the fragments, binary fission can be assigned as production process up to very heavy fragments. Fission fragments are separated and identified as far as 184Re for the first time. Cross sections are measured and found in the range of 500 μb to 5 μb. Isobaric cross sections decrease smoothly with increasing masses. Beyond tungsten, fission fragments are hidden in the more abundant spallation evaporation residues. 283 isotopes of elements gadolinium to rhenium in the mass range 147 to 184 are observed and cross sections measured. All the fragments are formed by fission of excited parent nuclei following emission of a cascade of secondary neutrons.

Abstract: PACS conv.GSI; The isotopic distributions and recoil velocities of the fission fragments produced in the spallation reaction 208Pb + p at 500 A MeV have been measured using the inverse-kinematics technique, a lead beam onto a liquid-hydrogen target, and the high-resolution spectrometer FRS at GSI. The shapes of the different distributions are found in good agreement with previously published data while the deduced total fission cross-section is higher than expected from existing systematics and some previous measurements. From the experimental data, the characteristics of the average fissioning system can be reconstructed in charge, mass and excitation energy, and the average number of post-fission neutrons can be inferred. The results are also compared to different models describing the spallation reaction. The intranuclear cascade code INCL4 followed by the de-excitation code ABLA is shown to describe reasonably well the evolution of the isotopic distribution shapes between 500 and 1000 A MeV.

Abstract: Prompt and delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of very neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes 187, 189Bi has been performed using the recoil decay tagging method. A rotational band has been observed in 189Bi and is interpreted as a complete decoupling of a single proton from the deformed lead core. The results for 187Bi suggest a similar structure and coupling scheme. Abstract: High resolution measurements with a magnetic spectrometer show a post-acceleration of the projectile-like residues produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The observed post-acceleration increases with the mass loss of the residual fragments. Lighter residues are observed to be produced at velocities even higher than the projectile. A dependence with the mass of the target and the energy of beam is also observed. This effect is interpreted as the response of the projectile spectator to the participant blast indicating a momentum dependence of the nuclear mean field.

Abstract: A systematic investigation of the isotopic cross sections of nuclear residues produced in the reactions238U (1 A GeV)+p,d has been performed with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer FRS at GSI. The large range of excitation energies induced in these reactions, together with the high fissility of uranium-like systems constitute an optimum scenario to study the dynamics of spallation reactions. In particular, some fundamental questions connected to the role of dissipation and the onset of a break-up stage at high temperatures can be addressed with these data.

Abstract: The production of heavy nuclides from the spallation-evaporation reaction of 238U induced by 1 GeV protons was studied in inverse kinematics. The evaporation residues from tungsten to uranium were identified in-flight in mass and atomic number. Their production cross-sections and their momentum distributions were determined. The data are compared with empirical systematics. A comparison with previous results from the spallation of 208Pb and 197Au reveals the strong influence of fission in the spallation of 238U.

Abstract: Detailed alpha-decay studies have been performed for the neutron-deficient isotopes 191At and 193At. The nuclei were produced in fusion-evaporation reactions of 54Fe and 56Fe ions with a 141Pr target. The fusion products were separated in-flight using a gas-filled recoil separator and implanted into a position-sensitive silicon detector. The isotopes were identified using position, time and energy correlations between the implants and subsequent alpha-decays. Three alpha-decaying states were identified for 193At and two for 191At. The spin and parity of the initial states in the astatine isotopes were deduced based on unhindered alpha-decays to states in the bismuth daughter nuclei. In both astatine isotopes the 1/2+ intruder state was determined to be the ground state and a 7/2- state to be the first-excited state. In 193At the alpha-decay of the 13/2+ state was observed in coincidence with a previously known gamma-ray transition from the 13/2+ state in the corresponding daughter nucleus 189Bi. In 187Bi and 189Bi low-lying 7/2- states were observed for the first time via alpha-decay of the mother nuclei.

Abstract: The techniques of recoil-gating and recoil-decay tagging have been employed at Jyvaskyla to perform in-beam γ-ray and electron spectroscopy studies of heavy nuclei. The JUROSPHERE γ-ray array and the SACRED electron spectrometer have been placed at the target position of the JYFL gas-filled recoil separator recoil ion transport unit (RITU). The RITU separator has been used to collect the recoils of interest and separate them from beam particles and fission products. At the focal plane a detector system consisting of time-of-flight and implantation detectors has been used for further event identification. The method and some highlights from the results in the lead region close to the proton drip line and in the transuranium region will be presented and discussed.

Abstract: The low-energy nuclear structure and decay properties of the neutron-deficient isotopes 195At and 191Bi have been studied. 195At was produced in the reaction 142Nd(56Fe,p2n)195At and 191Bi as the daughter activity of 195At. The activities were implanted in a position-sensitive silicon detector after being separated from the primary beam by a gas-filled recoil separator. The 1/2+ intruder state was determined to be the ground state in 195At with an alpha-decay energy of E α = 6953(3) keV and a half-life T 1/2 = 328(20) ms. Another state with an alpha-decay energy E α = 7075(4) keV and a half-life T 1/2 = 147(5) ms was found to decay to a 148.7(5) keV excited state in 191Bi for which a spin and parity of 7/2- were deduced. Consequently, the same 7/2- character was assigned to the initial state at 32(7) keV in 195At on the basis of unhindered alpha-decay. The 9/2- state, being the ground state in heavier odd-mass astatine isotopes, was not observed.

Abstract: Prompt and delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of very neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes 187, 189Bi has been performed using the Recoil Decay Tagging (RTD) method. The isomeric i 13/2 states have been identified and their lifetimes have been measured. The systematics of these long-lived M2 isomers has been extended to the proton-unbound isotopes. The general behaviour of single-proton states is discussed within the systematics and interpreted within the shell-model framework.

Abstract: A large experimental program has been initiated at GSI to determine the production cross sections of heavy residues in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The complete isotopic distributions of spallation–evaporation residues of the reactions induced by 1 GeV protons and 2 GeV deuterons in 238U are presented. The primary reaction products were fully identified in mass and atomic number prior to beta decay by using the fragment separator FRS. These data provide basic information to estimate the intensities of radioactive nuclear beams to become available in future RNB facilities using isotope separation on-line (ISOL) or in-flight separation techniques.

Abstract: With the inverse kinematics method, the reaction mechanism which leads to the formation of light nuclides was investigated with a 1 A GeV 238 U beam impinging on a liquid H 2 target. Isotopes of all elements with Z ⩾6 were unambiguously identified, and the velocity of every produced nuclide was measured with great precision. Results show that very asymmetric fission of uranium nuclei produces neutron-rich isotopes of elements down to around charge 10. When uranium interacts with heavier nuclei the features of the reaction change drastically: while fission is the main mechanism for the production of light masses in 1 A GeV 238 U on H 2 , projectile fragmentation plays a dominant role in 1 A GeV 238 U on Ti leading to the formation of stable or neutron-deficient isotopes of all elements.

A large range of excitation energies, combined with low angular momentum and small shape distortion is accessible. Full nuclide identification of the reaction residues is achieved by applying inverse kinematics. The nuclide production and the kinematics of fission fragments from a variety of primordial and radioactive projectiles reveal new insight into the influence of shell effects and dissipation on the fission process. The present contribution gives an overview on the experimental methods, the experimental results and the prospects for future progress.

Abstract: This contribution discusses the recoil-isomer tagging technique and its application to study isomeric states near the mass 140 proton drip line. The recoiling nuclei from a fusion-evapn. reaction were implanted into a silicon detector at the focal plane of a gas-filled separator, where prompt and delayed g-ray transitions were correlated across isomeric states. New states were established upon a known 15 ms isomer in 142Tb and the feeding and decay of a new 0.5(2)ms isomeric state was established in 144Ho. Abstract: The next generation of 4 pi arrays for high-precision gamma -ray spectroscopy will involve gamma -ray tracking detectors. They consist of high-fold segmented Ge detectors and a front-end electronics, based on new digital signal processing techniques, which allows to extract energy, timing and spatial information for a gamma -ray by pulse shape analysis of the Ge detector signals. Utilizing the information on the positions of the interaction points and the energies released at each point the tracks of the gamma -rays in a Ge shell can be reconstructed in three dimensions.

Abstract: Spallation residues produced in 1 GeV per nucleon ${}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ on proton reactions have been studied using the Fragment Separator facility at GSI. Isotopic production cross sections of elements from ${}_{61}\mathrm{Pm}$ to ${}_{82}\mathrm{Pb}$ have been measured down to 0.1 mb with a high accuracy. The recoil kinetic energies of the produced fragments were also determined. The obtained cross sections agree with most of the few existing gamma-spectroscopic data. The data are compared with different intranuclear-cascade and evaporation-fission models. Drastic deviations were found for a standard code used in technical applications.

Abstract: The production cross sections and longitudinal-momentum distributions of very neutron-rich isotopes have been investigated in the fragmentation of a 950 A MeV 179 Au beam in a beryllium target. Seven new isotopes ( 193 Re, 194 Re, 191 W, 192 W, 189 Tl, 187 Hf and 188 Hf) and the five-proton-removal channel were observed for the first time. The reaction mechanism leading to the formation of these very neutron-rich isotopes is explained in terms of the cold-fragmentation process. An analytical model describing this reaction mechanism is presented.

Abstract: Prompt and delayed γ-rays have been observed from very neutron deficient 192–195Po nuclei by using the recoil-decay tagging (RDT) and recoil gating techniques. The yrast levels up to the (10+) state in the 192Po were identified for the first time. Comprehensive data for 194Po rendered it possible to extend the yrast line and to observe several positive and negative parity non-yrast states. In the odd-mass isotopes 193Po and 195Po, favoured and unfavoured states on top of the 13/2+ state have been identified. The results are discussed within the simple vibrator and rotor pictures as well as in the framework of coexisting spherical and deformed-intruder structures.

Abstract: Fission induced by 197 Au on proton collisions is investigated in order to study the nuclear viscosity in highly excited nuclear matter. The isotopic identification of the fission residues allows to determine the mean values of the mass number, nuclear charge and excitation energy of the fissioning nuclei at saddle. The comparison of these properties with statistical fission calculations evidences the role of the nuclear viscosity in the description of the fission dynamics.

Abstract: Excited Jπ=0+ states in 188 Pb populated in the α-decay of 192 Po have been identified through α-particle/conversion electron coincidences. α-particle energies and branching ratios have been measured, and hindrance factors deduced. The level scheme has been fitted using a configuration mixing calculation, providing estimates of the mixing matrix elements, mixing amplitudes and the energies of unperturbed and unobserved levels.

Abstract: Projectile fragmentation and fission, induced in collisions of238U at 1A GeV with lead, have systematically been studied. A complete survey on the isotopic production cross-sections of all elements between vanadium (Z = 23) and rhenium (Z = 75) is given. About 900 reaction products were identified in the GSI fragment separator FRS from magnetic rigidities, time-of-flight values, and the energy loss in a ionisation chamber. In addition, the momentum distributions of all these reaction products have been mapped, and the products are unambiguously attributed to the different reaction mechanisms due to their kinematical properties. The results are compared with empirical systematics and previous data.

Abstract: An experiment to observe simultaneous, multiple muon events originating from extensive air showers is under preparation. The experiment will be situated in shallow depths in the Pyhasalmi mine in Finland, where the existing free caverns will be used. The aim is to cover an area of about 200 - 300 m(2). The detection of the multimuon events is motivated by partly unknown composition of the primary cosmic rays in the energy region of 10(15) - 10(16) eV, i.e. the 'knee' region. A prototype detector is under construction and is expected to be running at the spring 2005.

Abstract: The neutron-deficient 190Po and 189Bi isotopes have been produced in the 2n respectively p2n channels of the 48Ti +144 Sm reaction. Cross sections for different reaction channels are given. For 190Po, improved values of α-energy Eα = 7550(15) keV and half-life T1/2 = 1.9−0.4+0.6 ms were measured. By using correlated α-decay chains an α-branching ratio of 0.50(25) was deduced for 186Pb. The reduced α-width systematic is extended for both of these isotopes, confirming a persistence of the saturation towards the lighter Po isotopes and the absence of any anomalies for the neutron-deficient Pb isotopes. For 189Bi improved values of Eα = 7300(15) keV and T1/2 = 4.8(5) ms were measured.

Abstract: Neutron-deficient isotopes of radium have been produced in the reactions 35Cl + 175Lu, 40Ar + 170,171Yb, and 36Ar + 170,171Yb and separated in-flight with a gas-filled recoil separator. The activities have been identified on the basis of correlated alpha decay chains. The alpha particle energy Eα and the half-life T1/2 of an isomeric state of the new isotope, 203mRa, have been determined to be (7615±20) keV and (33 −10 +22 ), respectively. An assignment of another decay with Eα = (7577±20) keV and T1/2 = (1.1 −0.5 +5.0 ) ms to 203g Ra is made on the basis of one observed three-decay chain. Tentative evidence for the production of the new isotope 202Ra is also given. The values Eα = (7860±60) keV and T1/2 = (0.7 −0.3 +3.3 ) ms were measured. Improved decay data have been obtained for 204Ra. The results are Eα = (7484±10) keV and T1/2 = (59 −9 +12 ). Earlier findings concerning the decay of two states in 205Ra and an isomer in 207Ra have been confirmed. Approximate values for cross sections have been determined for 202Ra, produced using the 36Ar + 170Yb reaction and for 203Ra, 204Ra, and 205Ra using the 35Cl + 175Lu reaction. The results are 2 nb (202Ra), 4 nb (203Ra), 40 nb (204Ra), and 800 nb (205Ra).

Abstract: The new neutron-deficient isotopes {sup 210}Th and {sup 211}Th have been produced in fusion reactions with 5.2--5.7 MeV/nucleon {sup 35}Cl ions on {sup 181}Ta. The activities were identified on the basis of correlated {alpha} decay chains. Fusion evaporation products were separated in-flight using a gas-filled magnetic recoil separator. The measured {alpha} energies of {sup 211}Th and {sup 210}Th are (7792{plus_minus}14) and (7899{plus_minus}17) keV, respectively. The half-lives were found to be (37{sub {minus}11}{sup +28}) ms ({sup 211}Th) and (9{sub {minus}4}{sup +17}) ms ({sup 210}Th).

Abstract: A gas-filled recoil separator for the study of heavy elements has been constructed. The separator is of type QDQQ with the first, vertically focusing, quadrupole providing improved matching to the acceptance of the dipole magnet. The separator has been designed also for use in vacuum mode in which case a mass resolving power of ≈ 100 is estimated. The deflection angle is 25° and the radius of curvature is 1850 mm. Maximum beam rigidity is 2.2 T m. In the first experiments, new isotopes in the region Z = 85–90 have been synthesized.

Abstract: A combination of the proton-induced fission of 238 U and the on-line mass separation based on the ion-guide technique has been applied in the study of neutron-rich Mo-isotopes. The decays of 106,108 Mo have been studied by using gamma-, beta-, X-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy. The decay scheme of 106 Mo has been revised and a beta-decay half-life of 8.73(12) s has been measured for this nucleus. A beta-decay half-life of 1.09(2) s and a decay energy of 5120(40) keV have been measured for 108 Mo. The decay scheme of 108 Mo has been constructed and altogether 29 new transitions have been placed in the decay scheme. The beta-decay strengths of 102,104,106,108 Mo have been deduced from the experimental data and are compared with the Gamow-Teller strength obtained from a macroscopic-microscopic calculation. The role of the asymptotic quantum numbers in the context of the allowed beta decay is discussed. Additionally, the experimental half-lives and the decay energies are compared to the recent half-life and atomic-mass predictions.

The separator will be of the type DQQ where a horizontally focusing dipole (D) is followed by a quadrupole (Q) doublet. The bending radius of the dipole magnet will be 1850 mm and the bending angle 50°.

Abstract: Production cross sections and longitudinal velocity distributions of the projectilelike residues produced in the reactions ${}^{112}\text{Sn}+{}^{112}\text{Sn}$ and ${}^{124}\text{Sn}+{}^{124}\text{Sn}$, both at an incident beam energy of 1$A$ GeV, were measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, the Fragment Separator of GSI. For both reactions the characteristics of the velocity distributions and nuclide production cross sections were determined for residues with atomic number $Z\ensuremath{\ge}10$. A comparison of the results of the two reactions is presented.

Abstract: Total fission cross section induced by protons in 181Ta and 208Pb at energies in the range of 300 to 1000 A MeV have been measured at GSI (Germany) using the inverse kinematics technique. A dedicated setup with high efficiency made it possible to determine these cross sections with high accuracy. The new data seed light in the controversial results obtained so far and contribute to the understanding of the fission process at high excitation energies.

Abstract: Decay of 113Rh to the levels of 113Pd was studied at the IGISOL-facility by means of β-, γ- and conversion-electron spectroscopy. The level scheme of 113Pd was constructed using 33 gamma transitions on the basis of observed γγ-coincidence relations and half-life analysis. A β-decay half-life of (2.80±0.12) s was measured for 113Rh. A new 9 − 2 isomeric state with (0.3 ± 0.1) s half-life and excitation energy 81.3 keV was discovered in 113Pd. This state and the other recently observed low-lying 9 − 2 or 11 − 2 isomeric states in 115,117Pd isotopes are directly populated in proton-induced fission. The decay of these isomers is unusually strongly hindered compared with Weisskopf estimates. Our observation of two strongly hindered M2 transitions in 113,117Pd with hindrance factors of 7600 and 6800, respectively, imply coexistence of nuclear shapes in odd-A Pd nuclei.

Abstract: The production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei has been investigated using cold-fragmentation reactions of {sup 238}U projectiles at relativistic energies. The experiment performed at the high-resolving-power magnetic spectrometer Fragment Separator at GSI made it possible to identify 40 new heavy neutron-rich nuclei: {sup 205}Pt, {sup 207-210}Au, {sup 211-216}Hg, {sup 214-217}Tl, {sup 215-220}Pb, {sup 219-224}Bi, {sup 223-227}Po, {sup 225-229}At, {sup 230,231}Rn, and {sup 233}Fr. The production cross sections of these nuclei were also determined and used to benchmark reaction codes that predict the production of nuclei far from stability.
