We present an optical/near-IR survey of 11 variable young stars (EXors and EXor candidates) aimed at deriving and monitoring their accretion properties. About 30 optical and near-infrared spectra ($\Re$ $\sim$ 1500-2000) were collected between 2014-2019 with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). From the spectral analysis we have derived the accretion luminosity and mass accretion rate, the visual extinction, the temperature and density of the permitted line formation region, and the signature of the outflowing matter. Two sources (ASASSN-13db and iPTF15afq) have been observed in outburst and quiescence, three during a high-level of brightness (XZ Tau, PV Cep, and NY Ori), and the others in quiescence. These latter have accretion luminosity and mass accretion rates in line with the values measured in classical T Tauri stars of similar mass. All sources observed more than once present accretion variability. The most extreme case is ASASSN-13db, for which the mass accretion rate decreases by two orders of magnitude from the outburst peak in 2015 to quiescence in 2017. Also, in NY Ori the accretion luminosity decreases by a factor 25 in one year. In 80% of the sample we detect the [OI]630 nm line, a tracer of mass loss. From the variability of the H$\alpha$/[OI]630, ratio, we conclude that mass accretion variations are larger than mass loss variations. From the analysis of the HI recombination lines a correlation is suggested between the density of the line formation region and the level of accretion activity of the source., Comment: To appear in ApJ

In the framework of the GIARPS@TNG High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars (GHOsT) project, we study the accretion properties of 37 Classical T Tauri Stars of the Taurus-Auriga star forming region (SFR) with the aim of characterizing their relation with the properties of the central star, of jets and disk winds, and of the global disk structure, in synergy with complementary ALMA millimiter observations. We derive stellar parameters, optical veiling, accretion luminosity ($\rm L_{acc}$) and mass accretion rate ($\rm \dot M_{acc}$) in a homogeneous and self-consistent way using high-resolution spectra acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo with the HARPS-N and GIANO spectrographs, and flux-calibrated based on contemporaneous low-resolution spectroscopic and photometric ancillary observations. The $\rm L_{acc}$-$\rm L_{\star}$, $\rm \dot{M}_{acc}$-$\rm M_{\star}$ and $\rm \dot{M}_{acc}$-$\rm M_{disk}$ relationships of the Taurus sample are provided and compared with those of the coeval SFRs of Lupus and Chamaeleon I. Our results demonstrate the potential of contemporaneous optical and near-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy to simultaneously provide precise measurements of stellar and accretion/wind properties of young stars., Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. Young stellar objects in their pre-main sequence phase are characterized by irregular changes in brightness, generally attributed to an increase of the mass accretion rate due to various kind of instabilities occurring in the circumstellar disk. In the era of large surveys aimed to monitor the sky, we present a pipeline to detect irregular bursts, in particular EXors-like ( EX Lupi type eruptive variables), in the light curves. The procedure follows a heuristic approach and is tested against the light curves already collected for a few objects presently recognized as bona fide or candidate EXors., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. The mass-accretion rate, Ṁacc, is a crucial parameter for the study of the evolution of accretion disks around young low-mass stellar objects (YSOs) and for planet formation studies. The Taurus star forming region (SFR) is rich in pre-main sequence stars, most of them of the T Tauri class. A variety of methodologies have been used in the past to measure mass accretion in samples of YSOs in Taurus, but despite being a general benchmark for star formation studies, a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the Taurus T Tauri population, where the stellar and accretion properties are derived homogeneously and simultaneously, is still missing. As part of the GIARPS High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars (GHOsT) project, here we present a pilot study of the stellar and accretion properties of seven YSOs in Taurus using the spectrograph GIARPS at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. Contemporaneous low-resolution spectroscopic and photometric ancillary observations allow us to perform an accurate flux calibration of the high-resolution spectra. The simultaneity of the high-resolution, wide-band spectroscopic observations, from the optical to the near-infrared (NIR), the veiling measurements in such wide spectral range, and many well-calibrated emission line diagnostics allows us to derive the stellar and accretion properties of the seven YSOs in a homogeneous and self-consistent way. The procedures and methodologies presented here will be adopted in future works for the analysis of the complete GHOsT data set. We discuss the accretion properties of the seven YSOs in comparison with the 90% complete sample of YSOs in the Lupus SFR and investigate possibilities for the origin of the continuum excess emission in the NIR. In the framework of the GIARPS High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars (GHOsT) project, we aim to characterize the atomic and molecular winds in a sample of classical T Tauri stars (CTTs) of the Taurus-Auriga region. We analyzed the flux calibrated [OI] 630 nm and $\rm H_2$ 2.12 $\rm ��m$ lines in a sample of 36 CTTs observed at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo with the HARPS and GIANO spectrographs. We decomposed the line profiles into different kinematic Gaussian components and focused on the most frequently detected component, the narrow low-velocity (v$\rm_p < 20$ $\rm km$ $\rm s^{-1}$) component (NLVC). We found that the $\rm H_2$ line is detected in 17 sources ($\sim 50 \%$ detection rate), and [OI] is detected in all sources but one. The NLV components of the $\rm H_2$ and [OI] emission are kinematically linked, with a strong correlation between the peak velocities and the full widths at half maximum of the two lines. Assuming Keplerian broadening, we found that the [OI] NVLC originates from a disk region between 0.05 and 20 au and that of $\rm H_2$ in a region from 2 and 20 au. We did not find any clear correlation between v$\rm_p$ of the $\rm H_2$ and [OI] NVLC and the outer disk inclination. This result is in line with previous studies. Our results suggest that molecular and neutral atomic emission in disk winds originate from regions that might overlap, and that the survival of molecular winds in disks strongly depends on the gas exposure to the radiation from the central star. The mechanism for jet formation in the disks of T Tauri stars is poorly understood. Observational benchmarks to launching models can be provided by tracing the physical properties of the kinematic components of the wind and jet in the inner 100 au of the disk surface. In the framework of the GHOsT (GIARPS High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars) project, we aim to perform a multi-line analysis of the velocity components of the gas in the jet acceleration zone. We analyzed the GIARPS-TNG spectra of six objects in the Taurus-Auriga complex (RY Tau, DG Tau, DL Tau, HN Tau, DO Tau, RW Aur A). Thanks to the combined high-spectral resolution (R=50000-115000) and wide spectral coverage (~400-2400 nm) we observed several O, S+, N, N+, and Fe+ forbidden lines spanning a large range of excitation and ionization conditions. In four objects (DG Tau, HN Tau, DO Tau, RW Aur A), temperature (T_e), electron and total density (n_e, n_H), and fractional ionization (x_e) were derived as a function of velocity through an excitation and ionization model. The abundance of gaseous iron, X(Fe), a probe of the dust content in the jet, was derived in selected velocity channels. The physical parameters vary smoothly with velocity, suggesting a common origin for the different kinematic components. In DG Tau and HN Tau, T_e, x_e, and X(Fe) increase with velocity (roughly from 6000 K, 0.05, 10% X(Fe)_sun to 15000 K, 0.6, 90% X(Fe)_sun). This trend is in agreement with disk-wind models in which the jet is launched from regions of the disk at different radii. Eruptive variables are young stars that show episodic variations of brightness: EXors/FUors variations are commonly associated with enhanced accretion outbursts occurring at intermittent cadence of months/years (EXors) and decades/centuries (FUors). Variations that can be ascribed to a variable extinction along their line of sight are instead classified as UXors. We aim at investigating the long-term photometric behaviour of three sources classified as eruptive variables. We present data from the archival plates of the Asiago Observatory relative to the fields where the targets are located. For the sake of completeness we have also analysed the Harvard plates of the same regions that cover a much longer historical period, albeit at a lower sensitivity, however we are only able to provide upper limits. A total of 273 Asiago plates were investigated, providing a total of more than 200 magnitudes for the three stars, which cover a period of about 34 yr between 1958 and 1991. We have compared our data with more recently collected literature data. Our plates analysis of V2492 Cyg provides historical upper limits that seem not to be compatible with the level of the activity monitored during the last decade. Therefore, recently observed accretion phenomena could be associated with the outbursting episodes, more than repetitive obscuration. While a pure extinction does not seem the only mechanism responsible for the ASASSN-15qi fluctuations, it can account quite reasonably for the recent V350 Cep variations., Comment: 12 pages, accepted by A&A

We have analysed the [OI]6300 A line in a sample of 131 young stars with discs in the Lupus, Chamaeleon and signa Orionis star forming regions, observed with the X-shooter spectrograph at VLT. The stars have mass accretion rates spanning from 10^{-12} to 10^{-7} Mo/yr. The line profile was deconvolved into a low velocity component (LVC, < 40 km/s) and a high velocity component (HVC, > 40 km/s ), originating from slow winds and high velocity jets, respectively. The LVC is by far the most frequent component, with a detection rate of 77%, while only 30% of sources have a HVC. The [OI]6300 luminosity of both the LVC and HVC, when detected, correlates with stellar and accretion parameters of the central sources (i.e. Lstar , Mstar , Lacc , Macc), with similar slopes for the two components. The line luminosity correlates better with the accretion luminosity than with the stellar luminosity or stellar mass. We suggest that accretion is the main drivers for the line excitation and that MHD disc-winds are at the origin of both components. In the sub-sample of Lupus sources observed with ALMA a relationship is found between the HVC peak velocity and the outer disc inclination angle, as expected if the HVC traces jets ejected perpendicularly to the disc plane. Mass loss rates measured from the HVC span from ~ 10^{-13} to ~10^{-7} Mo/yr. The corresponding Mloss/Macc ratio ranges from ~0.01 to ~0.5, with an average value of 0.07. However, considering the upper limits on the HVC, we infer a ratio < 0.03 in more than 40% of sources. We argue that most of these sources might lack the physical conditions needed for an efficient magneto-centrifugal acceleration in the star-disc interaction region. After a quiescence period of about 10 years, the classical EXor source V1118 Ori has undergone an accretion outburst in 2015 September. The maximum brightness (DV > 4 mag) was reached in 2015 December and was maintained for several months. Since 2016 September, the source is in a declining phase. Photometry and low/ high-resolution spectroscopy were obtained with MODS and LUCI2 at the {\it Large Binocular Telescope}, with the facilities at the Asiago 1.22 and 1.82 m telescopes, and with GIANO at the {\it Telescopio Nazionale Galileo}. The spectra are dominated by emission lines of \hi\ and neutral metallic species. From line and continuum analysis we derive the mass accretion rate and its evolution during the outburst. Considering that extinction may vary between 1.5 and 2.9 mag, we obtain m_acc= 0.3$-$2.0 10$^{-8}$ m_sun/yr, in quiescence and m_acc= 0.2$-$1.9 10$^{-6}$ m_sun/yr, at the outburst peak. The Balmer decrement shape has been interpreted by means of line excitation models, finding that from quiescence to outburst peak, the electron density has increased from $\sim$ 2 10$^9$ cm$^{-3}$ to $\sim$ 4 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. The profiles of the metallic lines are symmetric and narrower than 100 km s$^{-1}$, while \hi\, and \hei\,\,lines show prominent wings extending up to $\pm$ 500 km s$^{-1}$. The metallic lines likely originate at the base of the accretion columns, where neutrals are efficiently shielded against the ionizing photons, while faster ionized gas is closer to the star. Outflowing activity is testified by the detection of a variable P Cyg-like profile of the H$\alpha$ and \hei\, 1.08\,$\mu$m lines., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Very little information has been so far gathered on atomic jets from young embedded low mass sources (class I stars), especially in the inner jet region. We exploit multiwave spectroscopic observations to infer physical conditions of the inner region of HH34 IRS, a prototypical class I jet. We use a deep X-shooter spectrum ( lambda = 350-2300 nm, R between 8000 and 18000) detecting lines with upper energies from 8000 to 31000 cm-1 . Statistical equilibrium and ionization models are adopted to derive the jet main physical parameters. We derive the physical conditions for the extended high velocity jet (HVC, V about -100 km/s) and for the low velocity and compact gas (LVC, V about -20-50 \kms). At the jet base (< 200 AU) the HVC is mostly neutral (x(e)< 0.1) and very dense (n(H) > 5x10^5 cm-3). The LVC gas has the same density and A_V as the HVC, but it is a factor of two colder. Iron abundance in the HVC is close to solar, while it is 3 times subsolar in the LVC, suggesting an origin of the LVC gas from a dusty disk. We infer a jet mass flux rate > 5x10^{-7} Mo/yr. We find that the relationships between accretion luminosity and line luminosity derived for T Tauri stars cannot be directly extended to class I sources surrounded by reflection nebulae since the permitted lines are seen through scattered light. An accretion rate of about 7\,10^{-6} Mo/yr is instead derived from an empirical relationship connecting the mass accretion rate with L([OI])(HVC). In conclusion, the HH34 IRS jet shares many properties with jets from active CTTs stars. It is however denser as a consequence of the larger mass flux rate. This paper presents the observations of the Cloud D in the Vela Molecular Ridge, obtained with the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope at the wavelengths \lambda = 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 {\mu}m. A photometric catalog of point sources, covering a field of approximately 1.2 square degrees, has been extracted and complemented with additional available observational data in the millimeter region. Previous observations of the same region, obtained with the Spitzer MIPS camera in the photometric bands at 24 {\mu}m and 70 {\mu}m, have also been reconsidered to allow an estimate of the spectral slope of the sources in a wider spectral range. A total of 170,299 point sources, detected at the 5-sigma sensitivity level in at least one of the IRAC bands, have been reported in the catalog. There were 8796 sources for which good quality photometry was obtained in all four IRAC bands. For this sample, a preliminary characterization of the young stellar population based on the determination of spectral slope is discussed; combining this with diagnostics in the color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, the relative population of young stellar objects in the different evolutionary classes has been estimated and a total of 637 candidate YSOs have been selected. The main differences in their relative abundances have been highlighted and a brief account for their spatial distribution is given. The star formation rate has been also estimated and compared with the values derived for other star forming regions. Finally, an analysis of the spatial distribution of the sources by means of the two-point correlation function shows that the younger population, constituted by the Class I and flat-spectrum sources, is significantly more clustered than the Class II and III sources., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We present Spitzer-IRS spectra obtained along the molecular jet from the Class 0 source L1448-C (or L1448-mm). Atomic lines from the fundamental transitions of [FeII], [SiII] and [SI] have been detected showing, for the first time, the presence of an embedded atomic jet at low excitation. Pure rotational H$_2$ lines are also detected, and a decrease of the atomic/molecular emission ratio is observed within 1 arcmin from the driving source. Additional ground based spectra (UKIRT/UIST) were obtained to further constrain the H$_2$ excitation along the jet axis and, combined with the 0--0 lines, have been compared with bow-shock models. From the different line ratios, we find that the atomic gas is characterized by an electron density n_e ~ 200-1000 cm^{-3}, a temperature T_e < 2500 K and an ionization fraction, Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, ApJ in press

The aim of this paper is to identify the young protostellar counterparts associated to dust millimeter cores of the Vela Molecular Ridge Cloud D through new IR observations (H_2 narrow-band at 2.12 micron and N broad band at 10.4 micron) along with an investigation performed on the existing IR catalogues. The association of mm continuum emission with infrared sources from catalogues (IRAS, MSX, 2MASS), JHK data from the literature and new observations, has been established according to spatial coincidence, infrared colours and spectral energy distributions. Only 7 out of 29 resolved mm cores (and 16 out of the 26 unresolved ones) do not exhibit signposts of star formation activity. The other ones are clearly associated with: far-IR sources, H_2 jets or near-IR objects showing a high intrinsic colour excess. The distribution of the spectral indices pertaining to the associated sources is peaked at values typical of Class I objects, while three objects are signalled as candidates Class 0 sources. We remark the high detection rate (30%) of H_2 jets driven by sources located inside the mm-cores. They appear not driven by the most luminous objects in the field, but rather by less luminous objects in young clusters, testifying the co-existence of both low- and intermediate-mass star formation. The presented results reliably describe the young population of VMR-D. However, the statistical evaluation of activity vs inactivity of the investigated cores, even in good agreement with results found for other star forming regions, seems to reflect the limiting sensitivity of the available facilities rather than any property intrinsic to the mm-condensations., Comment: 38 pages. V1118 Ori is an eruptive variable belonging to the EXor class of Pre-Main Sequence stars whose episodic outbursts are attributed to disk accretion events. Since 2006, V1118 Ori is in the longest quiescence stage ever observed between two subsequent outbursts of its recent history. We present near-infrared photometry of V1118 Ori carried out during the last eight years, along with a complete spectroscopic coverage from 0.35 to 2.5 um. A longterm sampling of V1118 Ori in quiescence has never been done, hence we can benefit from the current circumstance to determine the lowest values (i.e. the zeroes) of the parameters to be used as a reference for evaluating the physical changes typical of more active phases. A quiescence mass accretion rate between 1--3 $\times$ 10$^{-9}$ M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ can be derived and the difference with previous determinations is discussed. From line emission and IR colors analysis a visual extinction of 1-2 mag is consistently derived, confirming that V1118 Ori (at least in quiescence) is a low-extinction T Tauri star with a bolometric luminosity of about 2.1 L$_{\sun}$. An anti-correlation exists between the equivalent width of the emission lines and the underlying continuum. We searched the literature for evaluating whether or not such a behaviour is a common feature of the whole class. The anti-correlation is clearly recognizable for all the available EXors in the optical range (H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ lines), while it is not as much evident in the infrared (Pa$\beta$ and Br$\gamma$ lines). The observed anti-correlation supports the accretion-driven mechanism as the most likely to account for continuum variations., Comment: 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted on ApJ

The Einstein spontaneous rates (A-coefficients) of Fe+ lines have been computed by several authors with results that differ from each other by up to 40%. Consequently, models for line emissivities suffer from uncertainties that in turn affect the determination of the physical conditions at the base of line excitation. We provide an empirical determination of the A-coefficient ratios of bright [Fe II] lines that would represent both a valid benchmark for theoretical computations and a reference for the physical interpretation of the observed lines. With the ESO-Very Large Telescope X-shooter instrument between 3000 Å and 24700 Å, we obtained a spectrum of the bright Herbig-Haro object HH 1. We detect around 100 [Fe II] lines, some of which with a signal-to-noise ratios >=100. Among these latter lines, we selected those emitted by the same level, whose dereddened intensity ratios are direct functions of the Einstein A-coefficient ratios. From the same X-shooter spectrum, we got an accurate estimate of the extinction toward HH 1 through intensity ratios of atomic species, H I recombination lines and H2 ro-vibrational transitions. We provide seven reliable A-coefficient ratios between bright [Fe II] lines, which are compared with the literature determinations. In particular, the A-coefficient ratios involving the brightest near-infrared lines (λ12570/λ16440 and λ13209/λ16440) are in better agreement with the predictions by the Quinet et al. relativistic Hartree-Fock model. However, none of the theoretical models predict A-coefficient ratios in agreement with all of our determinations. We also show that literature data of near-infrared intensity ratios better agree with our determinations than with theoretical expectations. We present near infrared (IR) spectra (0.98--2.5 mu m) from the group of Herbig-Haro (HH) objects comprising HH99: a series of knots forming a bow, HH99B, and a separate knot, HH99A. Observations of H2, [Fe II] and [C I] are used to constrain shock model parameters and determine the origin of the emission. Previous work has shown that it is likely that the atomic and ionic emission arises in regions of higher ionization than the molecular emission. On the basis of observations, it has often been suggested that the [Fe II] and [C I] emission could arise, for example, at the apex of a bow shock, with the H2 emission produced in the wings. Accordingly, we have combined models of C-component and J-type shocks in order to reproduce the observed H2, [Fe II] and [C I] line spectra. We can account for the H2 emission towards the HH99B complex by means of J-type shocks with magnetic precursors. We derive shock velocities of about 30 km s-1 and ages of order 100 yr; the pre-shock gas has a density of approximately 10^4 cm-3 and the magnetic field is approximately 100 mu G. The J-type shocks required to reproduce the intensities of the observed [Fe II] and [C I] lines have velocities of 50 km s-1. It is necessary to assume that Fe has been previously eroded from grains, probably by the earlier passage of a C-type shock wave. Thus, our analysis supports the view that molecular outflows are episodic phenomena whose observed emission arises in shock waves.

As part of the POISSON project (Protostellar Optical-Infrared Spectral Survey on NTT), we present the results of the analysis of low-resolution NIR spectra 0.9-2.4 um) of two samples of YSOs in Lupus and Serpens (52 and 17 objects), with masses 0.1-2.0 Msun and ages from 10^5 to a few 10^7 yr. After determining the accretion parameters of the Lup and Ser targets by analysing their HI near-IR emission features, we added the results to those from previous regions (investigated in POISSON with the same methodology). We obtained a final catalogue (143 objects) of mass accretion rates (Macc) derived in a homogeneous fashion and analysed how Macc correlates with M* and how it evolves in time. We derived the accretion luminosity (Lacc) and Macc for Lup and Ser objects from the Br_gamma line by using relevant empirical relationships from the literature that connect HI line luminosity and Lacc. To minimise the biases and also for self-consistency, we re-derived mass and age for each source using the same set of evolutionary tracks. We observe a correlation MaccM*^2.2, similarly to what has previously been observed in several star-forming clouds. The time variation of Macc is roughly consistent with the expected evolution in viscous disks, with an asymptotic decay that behaves as t^-1.6. However, Macc values are characterised by a large scatter at similar ages and are on average higher than the predictions of viscous models. Although part of the scattering may be related to the employed empirical relationship and to uncertainties on the single measurements, the general distribution and decay trend of the Macc points are real. These findings might be indicative of a large variation in the initial mass of the disks, of fairly different viscous laws among disks, of varying accretion regimes, and of other mechanisms that add to the dissipation of the disks, such as photo-evaporation., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted by A&A

Ionization feedback should impact the probability distribution function (PDF) of the column density around the ionized gas. We aim to quantify this effect and discuss its potential link to the Core and Initial Mass Function (CMF/IMF). We used in a systematic way Herschel column density maps of several regions observed within the HOBYS key program: M16, the Rosette and Vela C molecular cloud, and the RCW 120 H ii region. We fitted the column density PDFs of all clouds with two lognormal distributions, since they present a double-peak or enlarged shape in the PDF. Our interpretation is that the lowest part of the column density distribution describes the turbulent molecular gas while the second peak corresponds to a compression zone induced by the expansion of the ionized gas into the turbulent molecular cloud. The condensations at the edge of the ionized gas have a steep compressed radial profile, sometimes recognizable in the flattening of the power-law tail. This could lead to an unambiguous criterion able to disentangle triggered from pre-existing star formation. In the context of the gravo-turbulent scenario for the origin of the CMF/IMF, the double peaked/enlarged shape of the PDF may impact the formation of objects at both the low-mass and the high-mass end of the CMF/IMF. In particular a broader PDF is required by the gravo-turbulent scenario to fit properly the IMF with a reasonable initial Mach number for the molecular cloud. Since other physical processes (e.g. the equation of state and the variations among the core properties) have already been suggested to broaden the PDF, the relative importance of the different effects remains an open question., Accepted in A&A

We present the rst results of a sensitive (K 17 mag) near IR (JHK) imaging survey of a complete IRAS selected sample of Young Stellar Objects (YSO's) belonging to a Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) located in the Vela Molecular Ridge (VMR). We provide accurate po- sition and photometry for more than 1300 sources, along with the identication of possible NIR counterparts of the IRAS objects. Through near infrared and 1.3 mm photom- etry we have determined the spectral energy distributions of 11 newly discovered Class I sources and possibly one Herbig Ae/Be star. Their bolometric luminosities indicate that they are protostellar objects of intermediate masses ( 10M) with envelopes containing a not negligible frac- tion of the central condensed matter. Many sources are as- sociated to diuse emission which hosts multiple systems of point-like objects. Although clustering is well evident, the NIR counterparts of the IRAS sources seem to be sin- gle objects and quite often there are more than one source in the eld with JHK colours typical of Class I objects. These ndings support the fact that in VMR, as well, stars of dierent masses are sharing the same birthplace.

Full Iso-Lws spectral scans between about 45 to 190 μm of 17 individual HH objects in 7 star forming regions have revealed essentially only [O I] 63 μm line emission, implying that the Fircooling of these objects is totally dominated by this line alone. In this case, J-shock models can be used to determine the mass loss rates of the HH exciting sources. These mass loss rates are in reasonably good agreement with those estimated for the accompanying CO flows, providing first observational evidence that HH and molecular flows are driven by the same agent. The Lmech – Lbol relation, based on our results with the Lws, implies that young stellar objects of lower mass are loosing mass at relatively higher rates than their more massive counterparts.

We investigate the diagnostic capabilities of the iron lines for tracing the physical conditions of the shock-excited gas in jets driven by pre-main sequence stars. We have analyzed the 300-2500 nm X-shooter spectra of two jets driven by the pre-main sequence stars ESO-Halpha 574 and Par-Lup 3-4. Both spectra are very rich in [FeII] lines over the whole spectral range; in addition, lines from [FeIII] are detected in the ESO-H\alpha 574 spectrum. NLTE codes along with codes for the ionization equilibrium are used to derive the gas excitation conditions of electron temperature and density, and fractional ionization. The iron gas-phase abundance is provided by comparing the iron lines emissivity with that of [OI] 630 nm. The [FeII] lines indicate ESO-Halpha 574 jet is, on average, colder (T_e = 9000 K), less dense (n_e = 2 10^4 cm^-3) and more ionized (x_e = 0.7) than the Par-Lup 3-4 jet (T_e = 13000 K, n_e = 6 10^4 cm^-3, x_e < 0.4), even if the existence of a higher density component (n_e = 2 10^5 cm^-3) is probed by the [FeIII] and [FeII] ultra-violet lines. Theoretical models suggest that the shock at work in ESO-Halpha 574 is faster and likely more energetic than the Par-Lup 3-4 shock. This latter feature is confirmed by the high percentage of gas-phase iron measured in ESO-Halpha 574 (50-60% of its solar abundance in comparison with less than 30% in Par-Lup 3-4), which testifies that the ESO-Halpha 574 shock is powerful enough to partially destroy the dust present inside the jet. This work demonstrates that a multiline Fe analysis can be effectively used to probe the excitation and ionization conditions of the gas in a jet without any assumption on ionic abundances. The main limitation on the diagnostics resides in the large uncertainties of the atomic data, which, however, can be overcome through a statistical approach involving many lines., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

In the framework of the WISH key program, several H2O (E_u>190 K), high-J CO, [OI], and OH transitions are mapped with PACS in two shock positions along the two prototypical low-luminosity outflows L1448 and L1157. Previous HIFI H2O observations (E_u=53-249 K) and complementary Spitzer mid-IR H2 data are also used, with the aim of deriving a complete picture of the excitation conditions. At all selected spots a close spatial association between H2O, mid-IR H2, and high-J CO emission is found, whereas the low-J CO emission traces either entrained ambient gas or a remnant of an older shock. The excitation analysis at L1448-B2 suggests that a two-component model is needed to reproduce the H2O, CO, and mid-IR H2 lines: an extended warm component (T~450 K) is traced by the H2O emission with E_u =53-137 K and by the CO lines up to J=22-21, and a compact hot component (T=1100 K) is traced by the H2O emission with E_u>190 K and by the higher-J CO lines. At L1448-B2 we obtain an H2O abundance (3-4)x10^{-6} for the warm component and (0.3-1.3)x10^{-5} for the hot component; we also detect OH and blue-shifted [OI] emission, spatially coincident with the other molecular lines and with [FeII] emission. This suggests a dissociative shock for these species, related to the embedded atomic jet. On the other hand, a non-dissociative shock at the point of impact of the jet on the cloud is responsible for the H2O and CO emission. The other examined shock positions show an H2O excitation similar to L1448-B2, but a slightly higher H2O abundance (a factor of 4). The two gas components may represent a gas stratification in the post-shock region. The extended and low-abundance warm component traces the post-shocked gas that has already cooled down to a few hundred Kelvin, whereas the compact and possibly higher-abundance hot component is associated with the gas that is currently undergoing a shock episode., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

OH is a key species in the water chemistry of star-forming regions, because its presence is tightly related to the formation and destruction of water. This paper presents OH observations from 23 low- and intermediate-mass young stellar objects obtained with the PACS integral field spectrometer on-board Herschel in the context of the Water In Star-forming Regions with Herschel (WISH) key program. Most low-mass sources have compact OH emission (< 5000 AU scale), whereas the OH lines in most intermediate-mass sources are extended over the whole PACS detector field-of-view (> 20000 AU). The strength of the OH emission is correlated with various source properties such as the bolometric luminosity and the envelope mass, but also with the OI and H2O emission. Rotational diagrams for sources with many OH lines show that the level populations of OH can be approximated by a Boltzmann distribution with an excitation temperature at around 70 K. Radiative transfer models of spherically symmetric envelopes cannot reproduce the OH emission fluxes nor their broad line widths, strongly suggesting an outflow origin. Slab excitation models indicate that the observed excitation temperature can either be reached if the OH molecules are exposed to a strong far-infrared continuum radiation field or if the gas temperature and density are sufficiently high. Using realistic source parameters and radiation fields, it is shown for the case of Ser SMM1 that radiative pumping plays an important role in transitions arising from upper level energies higher than 300 K. The compact emission in the low-mass sources and the required presence of a strong radiation field and/or a high density to excite the OH molecules points towards an origin in shocks in the inner envelope close to the protostar., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. We investigate on the spatial and velocity distribution of H2O along the L1448 outflow, its relationship with other tracers, and its abundance variations, using maps of the o-H2O 1_{10}-1_{01} and 2_{12}-1_{01} transitions taken with the Herschel-HIFI and PACS instruments, respectively. Water emission appears clumpy, with individual peaks corresponding to shock spots along the outflow. The bulk of the 557 GHz line is confined to radial velocities in the range \pm 10-50 km/s but extended emission associated with the L1448-C extreme high velocity (EHV) jet is also detected. The H2O 1_{10}-1_{01}/CO(3-2) ratio shows strong variations as a function of velocity that likely reflect different and changing physical conditions in the gas responsible for the emissions from the two species. In the EHV jet, a low H2O/SiO abundance ratio is inferred, that could indicate molecular formation from dust free gas directly ejected from the proto-stellar wind. We derive averaged Tkin and n(H2) values of about 300-500 K and 5 10^6 cm-3 respectively, while a water abundance with respect to H2 of the order of 0.5-1 10^{-6} along the outflow is estimated. The fairly constant conditions found all along the outflow implies that evolutionary effects on the timescales of outflow propagation do not play a major role in the H2O chemistry. The results of our analysis show that the bulk of the observed H2O lines comes from post-shocked regions where the gas, after being heated to high temperatures, has been already cooled down to a few hundred K. The relatively low derived abundances, however, call for some mechanism to diminish the H2O gas in the post-shock region. Crucial information on the mass accretion-ejection in young stars can be obtained from high spatial resolution images of jets in sources with recurrent accretion outbursts. Using the SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument, we observed the young binary Z CMa that is composed of a Herbig Be star and a FUor object, both driving a jet. We analyse the structure of the two jets in relation with previous accretion events observed in this target. We obtained optical images in the Halpha and OI 6300A lines at the unprecedented angular resolution of ~0.03 arcsec, on which we have performed both continuum subtraction and deconvolution, thereby deriving results that are consistent with each other. Our images reveal extended emission from both sources: a fairly compact and poorly collimated emission SW of the Herbig component and an extended collimated and precessing jet from the FUor component. The compact emission from the Herbig star is compatible with a wide-angle wind and is possibly connected to the recent outburst events shown by this component. The FUor jet is traced down to 70 mas (80 AU) from the source and is highly collimated with a width of 26-48 AU at distances 100-200 AU, which is similar to the width of jets from T Tauri stars. This strongly suggests that the same magneto-centrifugal jet-launching mechanism also operates in FUors. The observed jet wiggle can be modelled as originating from an orbital motion with a period of 4.2 yr around an unseen companion with mass between 0.48 and 1 Msun. The jet mass loss rate Mloss was derived from the OI luminosity and is in the range 1E-8 and 1E-6 Msun/yr. This is the first direct Mloss measurement from a jet in a FUor. If we assume previous Macc estimates obtained through modelling of the accretion disk, the derived range of Mloss would imply a very low mass-ejection efficiency (Mloss/Macc < 0.02), which is lower than that typical of T Tauri stars., Letter to Astronomy and Astrophysics

As part of the Herschel guaranteed time key program 'HOBYS', we present the photometric survey of the star forming region Vela-C, one of the nearest sites of low-to-high-mass star formation in the Galactic plane. Vela-C has been observed with PACS and SPIRE in parallel mode between 70 um and 500 um over an area of about 3 square degrees. A photometric catalogue has been extracted from the detections in each band, using a threshold of 5 sigma over the local background. Out of this catalogue we have selected a robust sub-sample of 268 sources, of which 75% are cloud clumps and 25% are cores. Their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) have been fitted with a modified black body function. We classify 48 sources as protostellar and 218 as starless. For two further sources, we do not provide a secure classification, but suggest they are Class 0 protostars. From SED fitting we have derived key physical parameters. Protostellar sources are in general warmer and more compact than starless sources. Both these evidences can be ascribed to the presence of an internal source(s) of moderate heating, which also causes a temperature gradient and hence a more peaked intensity distribution. Moreover, the reduced dimensions of protostellar sources may indicate that they will not fragment further. A virial analysis of the starless sources gives an upper limit of 90% for the sources gravitationally bound and therefore prestellar. We fit a power law N(logM) prop M^-1.1 to the linear portion of the mass distribution of prestellar sources. This is in between that typical of CO clumps and those of cores in nearby star-forming regions. We interpret this as a result of the inhomogeneity of our sample, which is composed of comparable fractions of clumps and cores., 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted by A&A

As part of the WISH (Water In Star-forming regions with Herschel) key project, we report on the observations of several ortho- and para-H2O lines performed with the HIFI instrument towards two bright shock spots (R4 and B2) along the outflow driven by the L1448 low-mass proto-stellar system, located in the Perseus cloud. These data are used to identify the physical conditions giving rise to the H2O emission and infer any dependence with velocity. These observations provide evidence that the observed water lines probe a warm (T_kin~400-600 K) and very dense (n 10^6 - 10^7 cm^-3) gas, not traced by other molecules, such as low-J CO and SiO, but rather traced by mid-IR H2 emission. In particular, H2O shows strong differences with SiO in the excitation conditions and in the line profiles in the two observed shocked positions, pointing to chemical variations across the various velocity regimes and chemical evolution in the different shock spots. Physical and kinematical differences can be seen at the two shocked positions. At the R4 position, two velocity components with different excitation can be distinguished, with the component at higher velocity (R4-HV) being less extended and less dense than the low velocity component (R4-LV). H2O column densities of about 2 10^13 and 4 10^14 cm^-2 have been derived for the R4-LV and the R4-HV components, respectively. The conditions inferred for the B2 position are similar to those of the R4-HV component, with H2O column density in the range 10^14 - 5 10^14 cm^-2, corresponding to H2O/H2 abundances in the range 0.5 - 1 10^-5. The observed line ratios and the derived physical conditions seem to be more consistent with excitation in a low velocity J-type shock with large compression rather than in a stationary C-shock, although none of these stationary models seems able to reproduce all the characteristics of the observed emission., Accepted for publication in A&A

During the formation of a star, material is ejected along powerful jets that impact the ambient material. This outflow phenomenon plays an important role in the regulation of star formation. Understanding the associated shocks and their energetic effects is therefore essential to the study of star formation. We present comparisons of shock models with observations of H$_2$ and SiO emission in the bipolar outflow BHR71, and predict water emission, under the basic assumption that the emission regions of the considered species coincide, at the resolution of currently available observations. New SiO observations from APEX are presented, and combined with \textit{Spitzer} and ground-based observations of H$_2$ to constrain shock models. The shock regions associated with targeted positions in the molecular outflow are studied by means of a 1D code that generates models of the propagation of stationary shock waves, and approximations to non-stationary ones. The SiO emission in the inner part of the outflow is concentrated near the apex of the corresponding bow-shock that is also seen in the pure rotational transitions of H$_2$. Simultaneous modelling is possible for H$_2$ and SiO and leads to constraints on the silicon pre-shock distribution on the grain mantles and/or cores. The best-fitting models are found to be of the non-stationary type, but the degeneracy of the solutions is still large. Pre-shock densities of 10$^4$ and 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ are investigated, and the associated best-model candidates have rather low velocity (respectively, 20-30 and 10-15 km s$^{-1}$) and are not older than 1000 years. In the framework of the Herschel-WISH key program, several ortho-H2O and para-H2O emission lines, in the frequency range from 500 to 1700 GHz, were observed with the HIFI instrument in two bow-shock regions (B2 and R) of the L1157 cloud. The primary aim is to analyse water emission lines as a diagnostic of the physical conditions in the blue (B2) and red-shifted (R) lobes to compare the excitation conditions. A total of 5 ortho- and para-H216O plus one o-H218O transitions were observed in B2 and R with a wide range of excitation energies (27 K=300 K). The presence of the broad red-shifted wings and multiple peaks in the spectra of the R region, prompted the modelling of two components. High velocities are associated with relatively low temperatures (~100K),NH2O{\simeq}5{\times}1012-5{\times}1013 cm-2 and densities nH2{\simeq}106-108 cm-3.Lower velocities are associated with higher excitation conditions with Tkin>=300 K, very dense gas (nH2 ~108 cm-3) and low column density (NH2O, 9 pages, 8 figures, A&A in press

The Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) onboard the Herschel Space Observatory allows the first observations of light diatomic molecules at high spectral resolution and in multiple transitions. Here, we report deep integrations using HIFI in different lines of hydrides towards the high-mass star forming region AFGL 2591. Detected are CH, CH+, NH, OH+, H2O+, while NH+ and SH+ have not been detected. All molecules except for CH and CH+ are seen in absorption with low excitation temperatures and at velocities different from the systemic velocity of the protostellar envelope. Surprisingly, the CH(JF,P = 3/2_2,- - 1/2_1,+) and CH+(J = 1 - 0, J = 2 - 1) lines are detected in emission at the systemic velocity. We can assign the absorption features to a foreground cloud and an outflow lobe, while the CH and CH+ emission stems from the envelope. The observed abundance and excitation of CH and CH+ can be explained in the scenario of FUV irradiated outflow walls, where a cavity etched out by the outflow allows protostellar FUV photons to irradiate and heat the envelope at larger distances driving the chemical reactions that produce these molecules., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (HIFI first results issue)

HERSCHEL-HIFI observations of water from the intermediate mass protostar NGC7129 FIRS 2 provide a powerful diagnostic of the physical conditions in this star formation environment. Six spectral settings, covering four H216O and two H218O lines, were observed and all but one H218O line were detected. The four H2 16 O lines discussed here share a similar morphology: a narrower, \approx 6 km/s, component centered slightly redward of the systemic velocity of NGC7129 FIRS 2 and a much broader, \approx 25 km/s component centered blueward and likely associated with powerful outflows. The narrower components are consistent with emission from water arising in the envelope around the intermediate mass protostar, and the abundance of H2O is constrained to \approx 10-7 for the outer envelope. Additionally, the presence of a narrow self-absorption component for the lowest energy lines is likely due to self-absorption from colder water in the outer envelope. The broader component, where the H2O/CO relative abundance is found to be \approx 0.2, appears to be tracing the same energetic region that produces strong CO emission at high J., 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by A&A

We present Herschel observations of the water molecule in the massive star-forming region W3 IRS5. The o-H17O 110-101, p-H18O 111-000, p-H2O 22 202-111, p-H2O 111-000, o-H2O 221-212, and o-H2O 212-101 lines, covering a frequency range from 552 up to 1669 GHz, have been detected at high spectral resolution with HIFI. The water lines in W3 IRS5 show well-defined high-velocity wings that indicate a clear contribution by outflows. Moreover, the systematically blue-shifted absorption in the H2O lines suggests expansion, presumably driven by the outflow. No infall signatures are detected. The p-H2O 111-000 and o-H2O 212-101 lines show absorption from the cold material (T ~ 10 K) in which the high-mass protostellar envelope is embedded. One-dimensional radiative transfer models are used to estimate water abundances and to further study the kinematics of the region. We show that the emission in the rare isotopologues comes directly from the inner parts of the envelope (T > 100 K) where water ices in the dust mantles evaporate and the gas-phase abundance increases. The resulting jump in the water abundance (with a constant inner abundance of 10^{-4}) is needed to reproduce the o-H17O 110-101 and p-H18O 111-000 spectra in our models. We estimate water abundances of 10^{-8} to 10^{-9} in the outer parts of the envelope (T < 100 K). OBJECTIVE Skin injuries provide a favorable environment for microbial infection if left untreated. This is problematic especially in nosocomial situations having a high prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus that can cause suppuration of wounds, systemic disease, and toxic shock. The objective of this investigation was to use a wound model system to study the interactions between microbial activity, host tissue, therapeutic treatments, and wound biomaterials. DESIGN An in vitro wound model was developed using Sykes-Moore chambers filled with 1 of 2 biomaterials used for wound treatment (1% alginate and dialyzed HyFil hydrogel (B. Braun Medical, Inc, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) and seeded with fibroblasts. The chambers were inoculated with S aureus, and half were later treated with antibiotics through in situ microdialysis tubing. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The chambers were monitored by obtaining fluid samples and biomaterial samples at specific time intervals (0, 2, 8, and 24 hours) and were analyzed for (1) S aureus protein A (SPA) concentration, (2) viable S aureus numbers, and (3) fibroblast numbers and viability. Chambers containing each biomaterial with and without antibiotics were compared to controls. MAIN RESULTS There was an inverse relationship between postinfection S aureus numbers and fibroblast viability. S aureus numbers were usually consistent with SPA concentration, which may have been underestimated because of SPA interactions with the biomaterials. CONCLUSION This wound model may be useful to gain an understanding about the interactions between microbial activity, host tissue, therapeutic treatments, and wound biomaterials. Hypotheses about wound treatments derived by means of this model may direct future in vivo studies.

We present an analysis of Spitzer-IRS spectroscopic maps of the L1157 protostellar outflow in the H2 pure-rotational lines from S(0) to S(7). The aim of this work is to derive the physical conditions pertaining to the warm molecular gas and study their variations within the flow. The mid-IR H2 emission follows the morphology of the precessing flow, with peaks correlated with individual CO clumps and H2 2.12{\mu}m ro-vibrational emission. More diffuse emission delineating the CO cavities is detected only in the low-laying transitions, with J(lower) less or equal to 2. The H2 line images have been used to construct 2D maps of N(H2), H2 ortho-to-para ratio and temperature spectral index beta, in the assumption of a gas temperature stratification where the H2 column density varies as T^(beta). Variations of these parameters are observed along the flow. In particular, the ortho-to-para ratio ranges from 0.6 to 2.8, highlighting the presence of regions subject to recent shocks where the ortho-to-para ratio has not had time yet to reach the equilibrium value. Near-IR spectroscopic data on ro-vibrational H2 emission have been combined with the mid-IR data and used to derive additional shock parameters in the brightest blue- and red-shifted emission knots. A high abundance of atomic hydrogen (H/H2 about 0.1-0.3) is implied by the observed H2 column densities, assuming n(H2) values as derived by independent SiO observations. The presence of a high fraction of atomic hydrogen, indicates that a partially-dissociative shock component should be considered for the H2 excitation in these localized regions. However, planar shock models, either of C- or J-type, are not able to consistently reproduce all the physical parameters derived from our analysis of the H2 emission. Water is a key molecule in the star formation process, but its spatial distribution in star-forming regions is not well known. We study the distribution of dust continuum and H2O and 13CO line emission in DR21, a luminous star-forming region with a powerful outflow and a compact HII region. Herschel-HIFI spectra near 1100 GHz show narrow 13CO 10-9 emission and H2O 1(11)-0(00) absorption from the dense core and broad emission from the outflow in both lines. The H2O line also shows absorption by a foreground cloud known from ground-based observations of low-J CO lines. The dust continuum emission is extended over 36" FWHM, while the 13CO and H2O lines are confined to ~24" or less. The foreground absorption appears to peak further North than the other components. Radiative transfer models indicate very low abundances of ~2e-10 for H2O and ~8e-7 for 13CO in the dense core, and higher H2O abundances of ~4e-9 in the foreground cloud and ~7e-7 in the outflow. The high H2O abundance in the warm outflow is probably due to the evaporation of water-rich icy grain mantles, while the H2O abundance is kept down by freeze-out in the dense core and by photodissociation in the foreground cloud., Comment: Accepted by A&A Letters (Herschel special issue); 4 pages, 4 figures

We derive the dense core structure and the water abundance in four massive star-forming regions which may help understand the earliest stages of massive star formation. We present Herschel-HIFI observations of the para-H2O 1_11-0_00 and 2_02-1_11 and the para-H2-18O 1_11-0_00 transitions. The envelope contribution to the line profiles is separated from contributions by outflows and foreground clouds. The envelope contribution is modelled using Monte-Carlo radiative transfer codes for dust and molecular lines (MC3D and RATRAN), with the water abundance and the turbulent velocity width as free parameters. While the outflows are mostly seen in emission in high-J lines, envelopes are seen in absorption in ground-state lines, which are almost saturated. The derived water abundances range from 5E-10 to 4E-8 in the outer envelopes. We detect cold clouds surrounding the protostar envelope, thanks to the very high quality of the Herschel-HIFI data and the unique ability of water to probe them. Several foreground clouds are also detected along the line of sight. The low H2O abundances in massive dense cores are in accordance with the expectation that high densities and low temperatures lead to freeze-out of water on dust grains. Water in Star-forming regions with Herschel (WISH) is a Herschel Key Program investigating the water chemistry in young stellar objects (YSOs) during protostellar evolution. Hydroxyl (OH) is one of the reactants in the chemical network most closely linked to the formation and destruction of H2O. High-temperature chemistry connects OH and H2O through the OH + H2 H2O + H reactions. Formation of H2O from OH is efficient in the high-temperature regime found in shocks and the innermost part of protostellar envelopes. Moreover, in the presence of UV photons, OH can be produced from the photo-dissociation of H2O. High-resolution spectroscopy of the OH 163.12 micron triplet towards HH 46 and NGC 1333 IRAS 2A was carried out with the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HIFI) on board Herschel. The low- and intermediate-mass YSOs HH 46, TMR 1, IRAS 15398-3359, DK Cha, NGC 7129 FIRS 2, and NGC 1333 IRAS 2A were observed with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) in four transitions of OH and two [OI] lines. The OH transitions at 79, 84, 119, and 163 micron and [OI] emission at 63 and 145 micron were detected with PACS towards the class I low-mass YSOs as well as the intermediate-mass and class I Herbig Ae sources. No OH emission was detected from the class 0 YSO NGC 1333 IRAS 2A, though the 119 micron was detected in absorption. With HIFI, the 163.12 micron was not detected from HH 46 and only tentatively detected from NGC 1333 IRAS 2A. The combination of the PACS and HIFI results for HH 46 constrains the line width (FWHM > 11 km/s) and indicates that the OH emission likely originates from shocked gas. This scenario is supported by trends of the OH flux increasing with the [OI] flux and the bolometric luminosity. Herschel-HIFI observations of high-J lines (up to J_u=10) of 12CO, 13CO and C18O are presented toward three deeply embedded low-mass protostars, NGC 1333 IRAS 2A, IRAS 4A, and IRAS 4B, obtained as part of the Water In Star-forming regions with Herschel (WISH) key program. The spectrally-resolved HIFI data are complemented by ground-based observations of lower-J CO and isotopologue lines. The 12CO 10-9 profiles are dominated by broad (FWHM 25-30 km s^-1) emission. Radiative transfer models are used to constrain the temperature of this shocked gas to 100-200 K. Several CO and 13CO line profiles also reveal a medium-broad component (FWHM 5-10 km s^-1), seen prominently in H2O lines. Column densities for both components are presented, providing a reference for determining abundances of other molecules in the same gas. The narrow C18O 9-8 lines probe the warmer part of the quiescent envelope. Their intensities require a jump in the CO abundance at an evaporation temperature around 25 K, thus providing new direct evidence for a CO ice evaporation zone around low-mass protostars., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

'Water in Star-forming regions with Herschel' (WISH) is a Herschel Key Programme aimed at understanding the physical and chemical structure of young stellar objects (YSOs) with a focus on water and related species. The low-mass protostar HH 46 was observed with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) on the Herschel Space Observatory to measure emission in H2O, CO, OH, [OI], and [CII] lines located between 63 and 186 um. The excitation and spatial distribution of emission can disentangle the different heating mechanisms of YSOs, with better spatial resolution and sensitivity than previously possible. Far-IR line emission is detected at the position of the protostar and along the outflow axis. The OH emission is concentrated at the central position, CO emission is bright at the central position and along the outflow, and H2O emission is concentrated in the outflow. In addition, [OI] emission is seen in low-velocity gas, assumed to be related to the envelope, and is also seen shifted up to 170 km/s in both the red- and blue-shifted jets. Envelope models are constructed based on previous observational constraints. They indicate that passive heating of a spherical envelope by the protostellar luminosity cannot explain the high-excitation molecular gas detected with PACS, including CO lines with upper levels at >2500 K above the ground state. Instead, warm CO and H2O emission is probably produced in the walls of an outflow-carved cavity in the envelope, which are heated by UV photons and non-dissociative C-type shocks. The bright OH and [OI] emission is attributed to J-type shocks in dense gas close to the protostar. In the scenario described here, the combined cooling by far-IR lines within the central spatial pixel is estimated to be 2 \times 10-2 L_sun, with 60-80% attributed to J- and C-type shocks produced by interactions between the jet and the envelope., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (Herschel special issue)

Early results from the Herschel Space Observatory revealed the water cation H2O+ to be an abundant ingredient of the interstellar medium. Here we present new observations of the H2O and H2O+ lines at 1113.3 and 1115.2 GHz using the Herschel Space Observatory toward a sample of high-mass star-forming regions to observationally study the relation between H2O and H2O+ . Nine out of ten sources show absorption from H2O+ in a range of environments: the molecular clumps surrounding the forming and newly formed massive stars, bright high-velocity outflows associated with the massive protostars, and unrelated low-density clouds along the line of sight. Column densities per velocity component of H2 O+ are found in the range of 10^12 to a few 10^13 cm-2 . The highest N(H2O+) column densities are found in the outflows of the sources. The ratios of H2O+/H2O are determined in a range from 0.01 to a few and are found to differ strongly between the observed environments with much lower ratios in the massive (proto)cluster envelopes (0.01-0.1) than in outflows and diffuse clouds. We present a study of the infrared variability of young stellar objects by means of two Spitzer-IRAC images of the Vela Molecular Cloud D (VMR-D) obtained in observations separated in time by about six months. By using the same space-born IR instrumentation, this study eliminates all the unwanted effects usually unavoidable when comparing catalogs obtained from different instruments. The VMR-D map covers about 1.5 square deg. of a site where star formation is actively ongoing. We are interested in accreting pre-main sequence variables whose luminosity variations are due to intermittent events of disk accretion (i.e. active T Tauri stars and EXor type objects). The variable objects have been selected from a catalog of more than 170,000 sources detected at a S/N ratio > 5. We searched the sample of variables for ones whose photometric properties are close to those of known EXor's. These latter are monitored in a more systematic way than T Tauri stars and the mechanisms that regulate the observed phenomenology are exactly the same. Hence the modalities of the EXor behavior is adopted as driving criterium for selecting variables in general. We selected 19 bona fide candidates that constitute a well-defined sample of new variable targets for further investigation. Out of these, 10 sources present a Spitzer MIPS 24 micron counterpart, and have been classified as 3 Class I, 5 flat spectrum and 2 Class II objects, while the other 9 sources have spectral energy distribution compatible with phases older than Class I. This is consistent with what is known about the small sample of known EXor's, and suggests that the accretion flaring or EXor stage might come as a Class I/II transition. We present low resolution (R approximately 250) spectroscopy in the near-IR (0.8 to 2.5um) of the EXor variables. These are the initial results (obtained during the period 2007-2008) from a long term photometric and spectroscopic program aimed to study the variability in the accretion processes of pre-Main Sequence (PMS) stars, by correlating the continuum fluctuations with the spectroscopical properties. Eight sources have been observed in different epochs, for a total of 25 acquired spectra. EXor spectra show a wide variety of emission features dominated by HI recombination (Paschen and Brackett series). We have investigated whether line and continuum variability could be due to a variable extinction, but such hypothesis is applicable only to the peculiar source PV Cep. By comparing the observed spectra with a wind model, mass loss rates in the range (2-10)x10^(-8) M_sun} yr^(-1) are derived, along with other wind parameters. Consistent results are also obtained by assuming that HI lines are due to accretion. CO overtone is also detected in the majority of the sources both in absorption and in emission. It appears to come from regions more compact than winds, likely the stellar photosphere (when in absorption) and the circumstellar disk (when in emission). NaI and CaI IR lines behave as the CO does, thus they are thought to arise in the same locations. For some targets multiple spectra correspond to different activity stages of the source. Those exhibiting the largest continuum variation at 2um (DeltaK > 1 mag) present a significant line flux fading during the continuum declining phases. In particular, CO absorption (emission) appears associated to inactive (active) stages, respectively., To be published in ApJ

We present the 12CO(1-0) and 13CO(2-1) line maps obtained observing with the SEST a $\sim 1\degr \times 1\degr$ region of the Vela Molecular Ridge, Cloud D. This cloud is part of an intermediate-mass star forming region that is relatively close to the Sun. Our observations reveal, over a wide range of spatial scales (from $\sim 0.1$ to a few parsecs), a variety of dense structures such as arcs, filaments and clumps, that are in many cases associated with far-IR point-like sources, recognized as young stellar objects and embedded star clusters. The velocity field analysis highlights the presence of possible expanding shells, extending over several parsecs, probably related to the star forming activity of the cloud. Furthermore, the analysis of the line shapes in the vicinity of the far-IR sources allowed the detection of 13 molecular outflows. Considering a hierarchical scenario for the gas structure, a cloud decomposition was obtained for both spectral lines by means of the CLUMPFIND algorithm. The CLUMPFIND output has been discussed critically and a method is proposed to reasonably correct the list of the identified clumps. We find that the corresponding mass spectrum shows a spectral index $\alpha\sim1.3 \div 2.0$ and the derived clump masses are below the corresponding virial masses. In this paper we present the first SiO multiline analysis (from J=2-1 to J=11-10) of the molecular bullets along the outflows of the Class 0 sources L1448-mm and L1157-mm, obtained through observations with IRAM and JCMT. We have computed the main physical parameters in each bullet and compared them with other tracers of warm and dense gas and with models for the SiO excitation in shocks. We find that the bullets close to L1448--mm, associated with high velocity gas, have higher excitation conditions (n(H2) ~ 10^{6} cm^{-3}, T > 500 K) with respect to the L1157 bullets (n(H2) ~1-5 10^{5} cm^{-3}, T ~ 100-300 K). In both the sources, there is a clear evidence of the presence of velocity components having different excitation conditions, with the denser and/or warmer gas associated with the gas at the higher speed. In L1448 the bulk of the emission is due to the high-excitation and high velocity gas, while in L1157 most of the emission comes from the low excitation gas at ambient velocity. The observed velocity-averaged line ratios are well reproduced by shocks with speeds v_s larger than ~ 30 km/s and densities ~ 10^{5} - 10^{6} cm^{-3}. Plane-parallel shock models, however, fail to predict all the observed line profiles and in particular the very similar profiles shown by both low and high excitation lines. The overall observations support the idea that the L1157 clumps are shock interaction events older than the L1448 bullets close to the driving source. In the latter objects, the velocity structure and the variations of physical parameters with the velocity resemble very closely those found in optical/IR jets near the protostar, suggesting that similar launching and excitation mechanisms are also at the origin of collimated jets seen at millimetre wavelengths., 11pages, 9 figures, A&A accepted

The complete near infrared (0.9-2.5 micron) spectra in three different star forming regions (HH24-26, HH72 and BHR71) are presented and analyzed in the framework of shock excitation models. The spectra are dominated by H_2 rovibrational emission (vibrational state nu up to 5, excitation energy T_ex up to 35000 K), while emission from ionized material, recognizable from [Fe II] and [S II] lines, is significantly fainter. The analysis of the H_2 excitation diagrams points to the existence of two different excitation regimes: whilst condensations observed only in the infrared appear to have temperatures rarely exceeding 3000 K and can be modelled in the framework of steady-state C-shock models, the infrared counterparts of Herbig Haro (HH) objects exhibit a temperature stratification with components up to more than 5000 K. The H_2 emission from representative HH objects (HH26A, HH72A and HH320A) has been successfully modelled by planar J-shocks with magnetic precursors, for which the main parameters (pre-shock density, speed) are derived. However, these same models are unable to reproduce the observed atomic and ionic emission, which probably arises from a distinct and perhaps more embedded region with respect to that traced by the H_2.
