1. Testing quasi-Dirac leptogenesis through neutrino oscillations

Abstract: The lightness of the Standard Model (SM) neutrinos could be understood if their masses were to be generated by new physics at a high scale, through the so-called seesaw mechanism involving heavy fermion singlets. We consider a novel scenario where the new physics violates baryon minus lepton number by only a small amount resulting in both heavy fermion singlets and the SM neutrinos to split into pairs of quasi-Dirac states. Above the weak scale, the cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry can be generated through resonant leptogenesis from decay of heavy singlets. Nontrivially, the CP violation for leptogenesis is bounded from above by the light neutrino mass splitting which can be probed in neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract: The Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) receives subthreshold data from multiple observatories in order to look for coincidences. Combining more than two datasets at the same time is challenging because of the range of possible signals (time windows, energies, number of events…). However, outlier detection methods can circumvent this issue by identifying any signal divergent from the background (e.g.\ scrambled data). We propose to use these methods to make a model independent combination of the subthreshold data of neutrino and gamma ray experiments. Using the python outlier detection (PyOD) package, it allows us to test several methods from a simple ``k-nearest neighbours'' algorithm to a more sophisticated Generative Adversarial Active Learning neural networks which generates data points to better discriminate inliers from outliers.

Abstract: Continued improvements on existing reconstruction methods are vital to the success of high-energy physics experiments, such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In IceCube, further challenges arise as the detector is situated at the geographic South Pole where computational resources are limited. However, to perform real-time analyses and to issue alerts to telescopes around the world, powerful and fast reconstruction methods are desired. Deep neural networks can be extremely powerful, and their usage is computationally inexpensive once the networks are trained. These characteristics make a deep learning-based approach an excellent candidate for the application in IceCube. A reconstruction method based on convolutional architectures and hexagonally shaped kernels is presented. The presented method is robust towards systematic uncertainties in the simulation and has been tested on experimental data. In comparison to standard reconstruction methods in IceCube, it can improve upon the reconstruction accuracy, while reducing the time necessary to run the reconstruction by two to three orders of magnitude., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Journal of Instrumentation; added references

Abstract: The observation of electromagnetic radiation from radio to $\gamma$-ray wavelengths has provided a wealth of information about the universe. However, at PeV (10$^{15}$ eV) energies and above, most of the universe is impenetrable to photons. New messengers, namely cosmic neutrinos, are needed to explore the most extreme environments of the universe where black holes, neutron stars, and stellar explosions transform gravitational energy into non-thermal cosmic rays. The discovery of cosmic neutrinos with IceCube has opened this new window on the universe. In this white paper, we present an overview of a next-generation instrument, IceCube-Gen2, which will sharpen our understanding of the processes and environments that govern the universe at the highest energies. IceCube-Gen2 is designed to: 1) Resolve the high-energy neutrino sky from TeV to EeV energies; 2) Investigate cosmic particle acceleration through multi-messenger observations; 3) Reveal the sources and propagation of the highest energy particles in the universe; 4) Probe fundamental physics with high-energy neutrinos. IceCube-Gen2 will increase the annual rate of observed cosmic neutrinos by a factor of ten compared to IceCube, and will be able to detect sources five times fainter than its predecessor. Furthermore, through the addition of a radio array, IceCube-Gen2 will extend the energy range by several orders of magnitude compared to IceCube. Construction will take 8 years and cost about \$350M. The goal is to have IceCube-Gen2 fully operational by 2033. IceCube-Gen2 will play an essential role in shaping the new era of multi-messenger astronomy, fundamentally advancing our knowledge of the high-energy universe. This challenging mission can be fully addressed only in concert with the new survey instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum and gravitational wave detectors which will be available in the coming years., Comment: 56 pages, 29 figures

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. In this paper, we present the experimental signature of ice optical anisotropy observed in IceCube light-emitting diode (LED) calibration data, the theory and parameterization of the birefringence effect, the fitting procedures of these parameterizations to experimental data, and the inferred crystal properties.

Abstract: We present a high-energy neutrino event generator, called LeptonInjector, alongside an event weighter, called LeptonWeighter. Both are designed for large-volume Cherenkov neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. The neutrino event generator allows for quick and flexible simulation of neutrino events within and around the detector volume, and implements the leading Standard Model neutrino interaction processes relevant for neutrino observatories: neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering and neutrino-electron annihilation. In this paper, we discuss the event generation algorithm, the weighting algorithm, and the main functions of the publicly available code, with examples., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: High-energy neutrinos are unique messengers of the high-energy universe, tracing the processes of cosmic ray acceleration. This paper presents analyses focusing on time-dependent neutrino point-source searches. A scan of the whole sky, making no prior assumption about source candidates, is performed, looking for a space and time clustering of high-energy neutrinos in data collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory between 2012 and 2017. No statistically significant evidence for a time-dependent neutrino signal is found with this search during this period, as all results are consistent with the background expectation. Within this study period, the blazar 3C 279, showed strong variability, inducing a very prominent gamma-ray flare observed in 2015 June. This event motivated a dedicated study of the blazar, which consists of searching for a time-dependent neutrino signal correlated with the gamma-ray emission. No evidence for a time-dependent signal is found. Hence, an upper limit on the neutrino fluence is derived, allowing us to constrain a hadronic emission model.

Abstract: Abstract High-energy tau neutrinos are rarely produced in atmospheric cosmic-ray showers or at cosmic particle accelerators, but are expected to emerge during neutrino propagation over cosmic distances due to flavor mixing. When high energy tau neutrinos interact inside the IceCube detector, two spatially separated energy depositions may be resolved, the first from the charged current interaction and the second from the tau lepton decay. We report a novel analysis of 7.5 years of IceCube data that identifies two candidate tau neutrinos among the 60 “High-Energy Starting Events” (HESE) collected during that period. The HESE sample offers high purity, all-sky sensitivity, and distinct observational signatures for each neutrino flavor, enabling a new measurement of the flavor composition. The measured astrophysical neutrino flavor composition is consistent with expectations, and an astrophysical tau neutrino flux is indicated at 2.8 $$\sigma $$ σ significance.

Abstract: Abstract The reconstruction of event-level information, such as the direction or energy of a neutrino interacting in IceCube DeepCore, is a crucial ingredient to many physics analyses. Algorithms to extract this high level information from the detector’s raw data have been successfully developed and used for high energy events. In this work, we address unique challenges associated with the reconstruction of lower energy events in the range of a few to hundreds of GeV and present two separate, state-of-the-art algorithms. One algorithm focuses on the fast directional reconstruction of events based on unscattered light. The second algorithm is a likelihood-based multipurpose reconstruction offering superior resolutions, at the expense of larger computational cost.

Abstract: Short fibre reinforced composites were made from keratin fibres obtained from poultry feathers. The matrix material was either polypropylene or a blend of polypropylene and maleic anhydride modified polypropylene (MaPP). In general, the addition of MaPP to polypropylene (PP) did not alter the tensile properties of the blend in a significant way. When not using MaPP, composites had lower breaking stresses than samples without fibres. However, MaPP at concentrations of >4 wt-% enhanced the breaking stress of the composites to above the value without fibres. Concurrent thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed a distinct increase in the amount of transcrystallinity in the composites at MaPP concentrations greater than 4 wt-%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed increased interactions between the protein fibres and the PP/MaPP matrix. Annealing showed that more large polymer crystals near the fibres were not enough to increase stress transfer across the interface.

11. Distribution and Severity of Pasmo on Flax in North Dakota and Evaluation of Fungicides and Cultivars for Management

Abstract: Pasmo, caused by Septoria linicola, reduces flax (Linum usitatissimum) yield in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, but little is known about its distribution and effect on yield in North Dakota. Field surveys for pasmo were conducted in 74 and 87 flax fields across 19 and 23 North Dakota counties in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The surveys indicated that pasmo was present in 17 and 18 counties in 2002 and 2003, respectively. County mean plant incidences ranged from 0 to 21% and 0 to 84.5% in 2002 and 2003, respectively. County mean pasmo severity ranged from 0 to 38.8% and 0 to 29.3% in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Significant (P ≤ 0.07) positive Pearson correlations were detected between total rainfall accumulated for June to August and pasmo severity in 2002 and 2003 and for rainfall and pasmo incidence in 2003. Field trials were conducted to determine the effect of fungicides and flax cultivars on pasmo severity and flax yield. Pasmo severity was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) reduced with azoxystrobin and sulfur fungicides compared with the untreated control. Flax yields were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) greater in azoxystrobin- and prothioconazole-treated plots than in the untreated control plots. Cv. Omega had significantly lower pasmo severity than the other three cultivars, but cv. Rahab 94 had the greatest yield of all the cultivars. Based on the results presented, pasmo is an important disease of flax in North Dakota, and its distribution is widespread throughout the flax-production region. Fungicides such as azoxystrobin and prothioconazole appear to be excellent potential tools for pasmo management.

Abstract: One of the United States Food and Drug Administration's most difficult tasks is the assessment of risk-benefit ratios for a broad spectrum of therapeutic and prophylactic drugs. Furthermore, it is now widely recog nized that no drug, chemical or even natural substance is completely devoid of risk. Nowhere has this issue been the subject of more controversy than with steroidal contraceptive drugs. Regulated as a special class of products because of their prophylactic use in healthy individuals for prevention of pregnancy rather than for treatment of disease, steroid contraceptives drugs undergo more extensive animal safety tests than any other pharmaceutical agent. This view also contemplates the availability of alternative contraceptive measures posing fewer risks, but the use of less effective methods must take into consideration the hazards associated with pregnancy itself. In April 1983, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Insti tutes of Health in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Population Council, and the Agency for International Development sponsored a three-day workshop to evaluate current guidelines for preclinical safety studies of contraceptive drugs in light of our extensive knowledge of the side effects of marketed products. The meeting included presenta tions by experts in the fields of comparative metabolism, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, carcinogenicity, toxicology, coagulation, lipid metabolism, epidemiology and pathology at a meeting of the Fertility and Maternal Health Drugs Advisory Committee of the National Center for Drugs and Biologics, Food and Drug Administration.

Ecology Letters 18(12): 1406-1419 (2015) Siefert, Andrew et al.., Recent studies have shown that accounting for intraspecific trait variation (ITV) may better address major questions in community ecology. However, a general picture of the relative extent of ITV compared to interspecific trait variation in plant communities is still missing. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of the relative extent of ITV within and among plant communities worldwide, using a data set encompassing 629 communities (plots) and 36 functional traits. Overall, ITV accounted for 25% of the total trait variation within communities and 32% of the total trait variation among communities on average. The relative extent of ITV tended to be greater for whole-plant (e.g. plant height) vs. organ-level traits and for leaf chemical (e.g. leaf N and P concentration) vs. leaf morphological (e.g. leaf area and thickness) traits. The relative amount of ITV decreased with increasing species richness and spatial extent, but did not vary with plant growth form or climate. Abstract: Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerators (PeVatrons) are Galactic sources theorized to accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV in energy. The accelerated cosmic rays are expected to interact hadronically with nearby ambient gas or the interstellar medium, resulting in γ -rays and neutrinos. Recently, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) identified 12 γ -ray sources with emissions above 100 TeV, making them candidates for PeVatrons. While at these high energies the Klein–Nishina effect exponentially suppresses leptonic emission from Galactic sources, evidence for neutrino emission would unequivocally confirm hadronic acceleration. Here, we present the results of a search for neutrinos from these γ -ray sources and stacking searches testing for excess neutrino emission from all 12 sources as well as their subcatalogs of supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae with 11 yr of track events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. No significant emissions were found. Based on the resulting limits, we place constraints on the fraction of γ -ray flux originating from the hadronic processes in the Crab Nebula and LHAASO J2226+6057.

Leur composition chimique et leurs propriétés mécaniques sont fortement dépendantes des paramètres de dépôt tels que la température d'élaboration et l'introduction de gaz dans l'enceinte. De même, ces paramètres induisent de grandes différences dans le comportement au frottement et les mécanismes d'usure des dépôts. Plus la température d'élaboration est importante, plus le coefficient de frottement est faible (≤ 0,1) sans présence de lubrifiant L'usure est douce et des analyses de surface ont mis en évidence la présence d'un film de transfert adhérent à l'antagoniste. En présence d'hydrogène dans le réacteur, les dépôts ont un comportement fragile et s'écaillent dès le début du glissement. La microstructure, les propriétés mécaniques et le comportement tribologique sont étroitement liés.

Abstract: We study gravitational quantum corrections in supersymmetric theories with warped extra dimensions. We develop for this a superfield formalism for linearized gauged supergravity. We show that the 1-loop effective Kahler potential is a simple functional of the KK spectrum in the presence of generic localized kinetic terms at the two branes. We also present a simple understanding of our results by showing that the leading matter effects are equivalent to suitable displacements of the branes. We then apply this general result to compute the gravity-mediated universal soft mass $m_0^2$ in models where the visible and the hidden sectors are sequestered at the two branes. We find that the contributions coming from radion mediation and brane-to-brane mediation are both negative in the minimal set-up, but the former can become positive if the gravitational kinetic term localized at the hidden brane has a sizeable coefficient. We then compare the features of the two extreme cases of flat and very warped geometry, and give an outlook on the building of viable models., 49 pages, LaTeX. Abstract: Radiation sources producing short pulses of photon radiation are widespread. Such sources include electron linear accelerators and field emission impulse generators. It is often desirable to measure leakage and skyshine radiation for these sources in real time and at environmental levels as low as 0.02 microSv per pulse. This note provides an overview of the design and performance of a commercial, real-time, pulsed photon dosemeter (PPD) capable of single-pulse dose measurements over the range from 0.02 to 20 microSv. The PPD may also be operated in a multiple-pulse mode that integrates the dose from a train of pulses over a 3 s period. A pulse repetition rate of up to 300 Hz is accommodated.

Abstract: The premise for the Conservation Agriculture farm demonstration is to develop actions and programs to increase profitability of agriculture by farming the best soils and establish alternatives on the rest. Communications among conservationists and farmers have been made more effective by breaching comfort zones through working in a team setting. The demonstration project improves communication on three levels: the farm family and their team, the thirteen-member advisory board of eight farmers and five agency representatives, and the partners which include non-profit organizations, federal, and state agencies. The resource analysis team, an interdisciplinary technical team, works directly with the farm family to develop a whole farm plan which addresses the trilogy of sustainability: ecology, sociology and economics. The Advisory Board oversees the Conservation Agriculture farm demonstration project, develops innovative programs, and finds funding to facilitate the whole farm plan implementation. Partners fund programs, offer advise on the process, discuss, revise, and forward the best agricultural policy ideas for debate to the state and federal levels.

Abstract: The design of the electronics control and data system for the extreme environment seen by a 1.3 kg, 1666 cubic cm nanorover is presented. The Muses-CN electronics is a low mass, low volume, low power electronics platform that must operate over the -170/spl deg/C to +125/spl deg/C temperature range and a 1 AU free space radiation environment. The nanorover electronics is a 2.5 W system that allows for 0.05 to 1 MIPS processing power and will control 10 motors for mobility and science instruments. Science measurements include IR and Alpha Xray backscatter spectrometers along with an active pixel sensor camera and robotic telemetry signals. The theoretical basis for a low power electronics system with space and commercial grade electronics parts operating in this temperature range is presented. System and component temperature results along with the unique packaging constraints of the COB assembly are also discussed.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the adhesion of WC-Co coatings using acoustic emission testing. The coatings were produced by HVOF spraying then subjected to four-point bending while in situ acoustic emission measurements were made. The test specimens were then examined under a microscope, revealing regularly spaced transverse cracks on the coating surface as well as interfacial cracking. An analysis of the acoustic emission data revealed two types of acoustic events based on absolute energy and amplitude. This appears to be linked to the cracks that were observed forming the basis for an interfacial cracking model.

Abstract: Using data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, we searched for high-energy neutrino emission from the gravitational-wave events detected by the advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors during their third observing run. We did a low-latency follow-up on the public candidate events released during the detectors’ third observing run and an archival search on the 80 confident events reported in the GWTC-2.1 and GWTC-3 catalogs. An extended search was also conducted for neutrino emission on longer timescales from neutron star containing mergers. Follow-up searches on the candidate optical counterpart of GW190521 were also conducted. We used two methods; an unbinned maximum likelihood analysis and a Bayesian analysis using astrophysical priors, both of which were previously used to search for high-energy neutrino emission from gravitational-wave events. No significant neutrino emission was observed by any analysis, and upper limits were placed on the time-integrated neutrino flux as well as the total isotropic equivalent energy emitted in high-energy neutrinos.

Abstract: In the quest for high-energy neutrino sources, the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network has implemented a new search by combining data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory and the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch (ANTARES) neutrino telescope. Using the same analysis strategy as in a previous detector combination of HAWC and IceCube data, we perform a search for coincidences in HAWC and ANTARES events that are below the threshold for sending public alerts in each individual detector. Abstract: Beginning in 2016, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory has sent out alerts in real time containing the information of high-energy ( E ≳ 100 TeV) neutrino candidate events with moderate to high (≳30%) probability of astrophysical origin. In this work, we use a recent catalog of such alert events, which, in addition to events announced in real time, includes events that were identified retroactively and covers the time period of 2011–2020. We also search for additional, lower-energy neutrinos from the arrival directions of these IceCube alerts. We show how performing such an analysis can constrain the contribution of rare populations of cosmic neutrino sources to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux. After searching for neutrino emission coincident with these alert events on various timescales, we find no significant evidence of either minute-scale or day-scale transient neutrino emission or of steady neutrino emission in the direction of these alert events. This study also shows how numerous a population of neutrino sources has to be to account for the complete astrophysical neutrino flux. Assuming that sources have the same luminosity, an E ^−2.5 neutrino spectrum, and number densities that follow star formation rates, the population of sources has to be more numerous than 7 × 10 ^−9 Mpc ^−3 . This number changes to 3 × 10 ^−7 Mpc ^−3 if number densities instead have no cosmic evolution.

Abstract: The understanding of novae, the thermonuclear eruptions on the surfaces of white dwarf stars in binaries, has recently undergone a major paradigm shift. Though the bolometric luminosity of novae was long thought to arise directly from photons supplied by the thermonuclear runaway, recent gigaelectronvolt (GeV) gamma-ray observations have supported the notion that a significant portion of the luminosity could come from radiative shocks. More recently, observations of novae have lent evidence that these shocks are acceleration sites for hadrons for at least some types of novae. In this scenario, a flux of neutrinos may accompany the observed gamma rays. As the gamma rays from most novae have only been observed up to a few GeV, novae have previously not been considered as targets for neutrino telescopes, which are most sensitive at and above teraelectronvolt (TeV) energies. Here, we present the first search for neutrinos from novae with energies between a few GeV and 10 TeV using IceCube-DeepCore, a densely instrumented region of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory with a reduced energy threshold. We search both for a correlation between gamma-ray and neutrino emission as well as between optical and neutrino emission from novae. We find no evidence for neutrino emission from the novae considered in this analysis and set upper limits for all gamma-ray detected novae.

Abstract: Abstract KM3NeT is a research infrastructure located in the Mediterranean Sea, that will consist of two deep-sea Cherenkov neutrino detectors. With one detector (ARCA), the KM3NeT Collaboration aims at identifying and studying TeV–PeV astrophysical neutrino sources. With the other detector (ORCA), the neutrino mass ordering will be determined by studying GeV-scale atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The first KM3NeT detection units were deployed at the Italian and French sites between 2015 and 2017. In this paper, a description of the detector is presented, together with a summary of the procedures used to calibrate the detector in-situ. Finally, the measurement of the atmospheric muon flux between 2232–3386 m seawater depth is obtained.

Abstract: Abstract The Protvino accelerator facility located in the Moscow region, Russia, is in a good position to offer a rich experimental research program in the field of neutrino physics. Of particular interest is the possibility to direct a neutrino beam from Protvino towards the KM3NeT/ORCA detector, which is currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea 40 km offshore Toulon, France. This proposal is known as P2O. Thanks to its baseline of 2595 km, this experiment would yield an unparalleled sensitivity to matter effects in the Earth, allowing for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering with a high level of certainty after only a few years of running at a modest beam intensity of $$\approx ~90~\hbox {kW}$$ ≈90kW . With a prolonged exposure ($$\approx 1500\hbox { kW}\,\,\hbox {year}$$ ≈1500kWyear ), a $$2\sigma $$ 2σ sensitivity to the leptonic CP-violating Dirac phase can be achieved. A second stage of the experiment, comprising a further intensity upgrade of the accelerator complex and a densified version of the ORCA detector (Super-ORCA), would allow for up to a $$6\sigma $$ 6σ sensitivity to CP violation and a $$10^\circ {-}17^\circ $$ 10∘-17∘ resolution on the CP phase after 10 years of running with a 450 kW beam, competitive with other planned experiments. The initial composition and energy spectrum of the neutrino beam would need to be monitored by a near detector, to be constructed several hundred meters downstream from the proton beam target. The same neutrino beam and near detector set-up would also allow for neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements to be performed. A short-baseline sterile neutrino search experiment would also be possible.

Abstract: Abstract The ANTARES neutrino telescope has an energy threshold of a few tens of GeV. This allows to study the phenomenon of atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance due to neutrino oscillations. In a similar way, constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model, which foresees the existence of one sterile neutrino, can be inferred. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2016, a new measurement of Δm 32 2 and θ 23 has been performed — which is consistent with world best-fit values — and constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model have been derived.

Abstract: Abstract One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with $$3.5\sigma $$ 3.5σ statistical significance. The detector angular resolution for downward-going muons is $$0.73^{\circ }\pm 0.14^{\circ }.$$ 0.73∘±0.14∘. The resulting pointing performance is consistent with the expectations. An independent check of the telescope pointing accuracy is realised with the data collected by a shower array detector onboard of a ship temporarily moving around the ANTARES location.

Abstract: Abstract Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Abstract: Abstract Advanced LIGO detected a significant gravitational wave signal (GW170104) originating from the coalescence of two black holes during the second observation run on January 4th, 2017. An all-sky high-energy neutrino follow-up search has been made using data from the Antares neutrino telescope, including both upgoing and downgoing events in two separate analyses. No neutrino candidates were found within $$\pm 500$$ ± 500 s around the GW event time nor any time clustering of events over an extended time window of $$\pm 3$$ ± 3 months. The non-detection is used to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW170104 to less than $$\sim {1.2}\times 10^{{55}}$$ ∼ 1.2 × 10 55 erg for a $$E^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum. This constraint is valid in the energy range corresponding to the 5–95% quantiles of the neutrino flux [3.2 TeV; 3.6 PeV], if the GW emitter was below the Antares horizon at the alert time.

Abstract: Abstract A search for magnetic monopoles using five years of data recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope from January 2008 to December 2012 with a total live time of 1121 days is presented. The analysis is carried out in the range β > 0.6 of magnetic monopole velocities using a strategy based on run-by-run Monte Carlo simulations. No signal above the background expectation from atmospheric muons and atmospheric neutrinos is observed, and upper limits are set on the magnetic monopole flux ranging from 5.7 × 10−16 to 1.5 × 10−18 cm−2·s−1·sr−1.

Abstract: Abstract A novel algorithm to reconstruct neutrino-induced particle showers within the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. The method achieves a median angular resolution of $$6^\circ $$ 6 ∘ for shower energies below 100 TeV. Applying this algorithm to 6 years of data taken with the ANTARES detector, 8 events with reconstructed shower energies above 10 TeV are observed. This is consistent with the expectation of about 5 events from atmospheric backgrounds, but also compatible with diffuse astrophysical flux measurements by the IceCube collaboration, from which 2–4 additional events are expected. A $$90\%$$ 90 % C.L. upper limit on the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux with a value per neutrino flavour of $$\text {E}^2\cdot \Phi ^{90\%} = 4.9 \cdot 10^{-8}\,\mathrm {GeV} \cdot \mathrm {cm^{-2} \cdot s^{-1}\cdot sr^{-1}}$$ E 2 · Φ 90 % = 4.9 · 10 - 8 GeV · cm - 2 · s - 1 · sr - 1 is set, applicable to the energy range from 23 TeV to 7.8 PeV, assuming an unbroken $$\text {E}^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum and neutrino flavour equipartition at Earth.

Abstract: Using data recorded with the ANTARES telescope from 2007 to 2015, a new search for dark matter annihilation in the Milky Way has been performed. Three halo models and five annihilation channels, WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W−,τ+τ−,μ+μ− and νν¯, with WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeVc2 to 100 TeVc2, were considered. No excess over the expected background was found, and limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross-section were set.

Abstract: Abstract Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multi-megaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1-20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. These results will therefore also be applicable to similar detectors/media, such as those in ice.

Abstract: Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains WR302 and PGH3-2 were characterized with respect to their restriction-modification phenotype. WR302 DNA was cleaved by HaeIII, indicating the lack of methylation at the GGCC sequence. PGH3-2 produced NgoSI (an isoschizomer of NgoII). WR302 produced a restriction enzyme with a recognition sequence different from that of NgoI, NgoII, or NgoIII. Plasmid pFT180 isolated from WR302 was unable to transform PGH3-2, whereas plasmid pFT180 isolated from PGH3-2 was able to transform PGH3-2 at a very high frequency. When plasmid pFT180 isolated from WR302 was methylated in vitro with meth M. HaeIII, this plasmid was able to transform PGH3-2. NgoSI was able to restrict WR302 DNA in vitro, whereas it was incapable of restricting PGH3-2 DNA in vitro. When the self-transmissible R factor pFT6 was mobilized from WR302 to PGH3-2 by conjugation, a 1-order-of-magnitude difference in transfer frequencies was observed, as compared with an isogenic cross. The data indicate that host-mediated restriction can prevent the gonococcus from acquiring DNA via transformation but not via conjugation.

Abstract: In order to investigate the mechanisms of the intrauterine devices antifertility effect the quantitative effect of an IUD on the weight and water content of the genital tract during the preovulatory phase of the cycle after uterine trauma and following castration with and without administration of estrogen was studied in 42 hamsters. 12 animals were observed for characteristic vaginal cycle changes after 3 cycles with the IUD in situ. 10 hamsters were mated with vasectomized males and examined by laparotomy on Day 4 of pseudopregnancy. 20 hamsters were oophorectomized at the time of IUD insertion and examined 7 days later. Half of these animals were administered 10 mcg of estrogen im 24 hours before autopsy. The presence of the unilateral IUD resulted in uterotrophic effects in the intact pseudopregnant and ovariectomized hamsters with or without the estrogen administration. In the pseudopregnant hamsters the glycogen content was significantly reduced in the IUD-treated uterine horn (p less than .01). Estrogen administration increased glycogen synthesis but the IUD did not. No difference in uterine water content was found in the presence of the IUD.

Abstract: The glycogen and water content of the uterus, cervix, upper and lower vagina was determined on castrate hamsters administered either 1, 10 or 100 μg estradiol and sacrificed 1, 6, 12 or 24 hr later. Uterine tissue glycogen synthesis was maximal with 1 μg estradiol and was completed by 12 hr. In cervical and upper vaginal tissue, a positive linear response relationship was demonstrated between estradiol and glycogen synthesis, and this response was a function of dose and time. In these tissues, a linear increase was demonstrated at 1 μg level until 12 hr, with heightened glycogen values at 10 and 100 μg estradiol by 24 hr, when significantly greater glycogen synthesis resulted from the 100 μg dose as compared to that caused by the 10 μg estradiol. The uterine water content was increased with all levels of estrogen, but vaginal tissue affected by the 1.0 μg level only. Abstract: basal lamina and have extensive interdigitation, but few desmosomes. None of the vaginal cells contain glycogen granules. The superficial cells synthesize mucous granules in close association with the Golgi complex. When estrogen is administered to spayed animals, and in the normal animals during the follicular phase of the cycle, the epithelium hypertrophies to as many as 50 layers of cells. A conspicuous basal lamina separates the epithelium from the connective tissue. As the basal cells move upward, they synthesize large amounts of glycogen, which eventually occupies extensive areas of the superficial cells. Besides glycogen, the cells synthesize keratohyalin, membrane-coating granules, and thickened plasma membranes-typical products of keratinization. The exfoliated cells, not completely keratinized, have disintegrating nuclei, some organelles, and large quantities of glycogen. If progesterone is given with estrogen to spayed animals or during the luteal phase of the normal cycle, the epithelium forms mucus rather than keratohyalin, membrane-coating granules, or thickened plasma membranes. These results can be explained by the inhibiting action of progesterone on estrogen. Large areas of the external (skin), and internal (buccal cavity, esophagus, conjunctiva, and vagina) surfaces of the body are covered by a stratified squamous epithehum that is continuously renewed. Abstract: Groups of five rabbits were killed at 0, 2, 4, 7, 10, 24, 48, 98, 168 and 240 hours after mating. The glycogen content of the lower half of the Fallopian tube was greater than in the upper half at each interval. Uterine and Fallopian tube levels of glycogen decreased during the interval from mating to ovulation. Both cervical and vaginal glycogen declined significantly within 24 hours after mating. Decidual uterine areas contained 1.5 and 5.0 times more glycogen on days 7 and 10, respectively, than interdecidual areas. Castrate rabbit Fallopian tube, uterus, cervix and vagina responded with glycogen synthesis to estradiol, but not to progesterone administration.

Abstract: The effect of estradiol or estradiol and progesterone on weight water content and glycogen content of uterus cervix and vagina in ovariectomized guinea pigs was surveyed briefly. 4 groups of 5 guinea pigs ovariectomized for 1 year received: 1) 1 mcg estradiol benzoate at 1 and 24 hours .4 mg progesterone at 48 hours and were killed 2 hours after estrus detected by the lordosis response; 2) 1 mcg estradiol at 0 and 24 hours and oil at 48 hours; 3) 100 mcg estradiol at 0 and 24 hours and oil at 48 hours; 4) controls (treatment not specified). Uterine tissue weights increased significantly in all treated groups (p less than .01); vaginal tissue was not weighed; water content remained unchanged. Significant weight gain in cervix was measured after 122 mcg estradiol and the combined treatment. The only significant increase in glycogen was in cervix after 1 mcg estrogen. The uterus had about 5% mo re water content in all groups than did the other tissues. This lack of glycogen response differs from the definite glycogen deposition in rats and hamsters.
