Abstract Wisdom is the hallmark of social judgment, but how people across cultures recognize wisdom remains unclear—distinct philosophical traditions suggest different views of wisdom’s cardinal features. We explore perception of wise minds across 16 socio-economically and culturally diverse convenience samples from 12 countries. Participants assessed wisdom exemplars, non-exemplars, and themselves on 19 socio-cognitive characteristics, subsequently rating targets’ wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Analyses reveal two positively related dimensions—Reflective Orientation and Socio-Emotional Awareness. These dimensions are consistent across the studied cultural regions and interact when informing wisdom ratings: wisest targets—as perceived by participants—score high on both dimensions, whereas the least wise are not reflective but moderately socio-emotional. Additionally, individuals view themselves as less reflective but more socio-emotionally aware than most wisdom exemplars. Our findings expand folk psychology and social judgment research beyond the Global North, showing how individuals perceive desirable cognitive and socio-emotional qualities, and contribute to an understanding of mind perception.

The fragmentation reactions of neutron-rich unstable nuclei 81Ga and 82Ge at 250 MeV/nucleon have been studied in order to search the optimal mean for the production of very neutron-rich nuclei in the vicinity of 78Ni. The newly measured cross sections were compared with various calculations, showing a good agreement with EPAX3.01. The present work provides experimental insights into the two-step scheme—fragmentation following fission—as a method to produce very neutron-rich nuclei through a combination of ISOL and fragmentation of post-accelerated beams of unstable nuclei. Our results enable an evaluation of the potential of the two-step scheme in the production of very neutron-rich nuclei for the 78Ni region. The two-step scheme using fragmentation of a post-accelerated 81Ga beam could be an option to produce neutron-rich nuclei around 78Ni when the 81Ga beam intensity reaches 1.0×108 pps, compared to the one-step scheme with fission of 238U.

Abstract Refinement of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) through enhancing heterogeneous nucleation during casting process is an important approach to improve the properties of aluminium alloys, which greatly increases the economy value of recycled Al-alloys. However, heterogeneous nucleation of IMCs is inherently more difficult than that of a pure metal or a solid solution. It requires not only creation of a crystal structure but also the positioning of 2 or more different types of atoms in the lattice with specific composition close to that of the nucleated IMCs. Previous understanding on heterogeneous nucleation is based on structural templating, usually considering the small lattice misfit at the interface between the nucleating solid and substrate. In this work, we proposed a hypothesis and demonstrated that composition templating plays a critical role in heterogeneous nucleation of IMCs. The experimental results revealed that segregation of Fe atoms on the AlB2 surface, i.e., the Fe modified AlB2 particle, provides the required composition templating and hence enhances heterogeneous nucleation of α-Al15(Fe, Mn)3Si2, resulting in a significant refinement of the α-Al15(Fe, Mn)3Si2 particles in an Al-5 Mg-2Si-1.0Mn-1.2Fe alloy.

Background: Evaluating multiple biomarkers including human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), mismatch repair (MMR) status, programed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), and claudin 18.2 (CLDN18.2) is essential for selecting appropriate first-line therapy of metastatic gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (mGEA). However, this can be challenging if tumor tissue amount is limited and may cause delays in the initiation of chemotherapy. Therefore, we assessed the feasibility of multiple biomarkers testing in routine clinical practice. Materials and methods: We reviewed the medical records of treatment-naïve patients with mGEA who underwent prospective multiple biomarkers testing between April 2022 and October 2023 in our institution. Eight biomarker status including HER2, MMR, PD-L1, CLDN18.2, Epstein–Barr virus, fibroblast growth factor receptor 2, epidermal growth factor receptor and mesenchymal epithelial transition expressions were simultaneously examined using biopsy or surgical specimens. Results: A total of 203 patients with mGEA were analyzed. Most patients underwent gastroendoscopy and tumor biopsy shortly after referral to our institution. Biomarkers testing was successfully completed on the first attempt in 198 patients (97.5%). With additional steps including additional biopsy or asking remaining tumor samples from the referring hospital, the biomarker results were eventually available in all cases. The median turnaround time from sample collection to reporting results was 7 days. Consequently, 178 patients (87.7%) could receive first-line treatment after obtaining the biomarker status. Conclusions: Multiple biomarkers testing for patients with mGEA was feasible in clinical practice. Establishment of a testing infrastructure based on the collaboration with multiple departments is essential for implementing biomarker-driven precision treatment.

Aim: to examine an efficacy of various stimulation methods in a group of successful pregnancies.Materials and Methods. In a single center retrospective study 47 pregnancy cases were examined after performing embryo transfers at our institution from the years 2017 to 2021. Patients were divided into four groups: i) clomiphene hyperstimulation (CH), ii) stimulation with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, iii) with GnRH antagonist, and iv) progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS). Age, anti-Mullerian hormone, presence of chronic disease, number of in-vitro fertilizations prior to conception, dosage of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), presence of premature luteinizing hormone surge, number of egg retrievals, fertilization rate, and live birth rate were assessed.Results. The number of pregnancies obtained by CH, agonist, antagonist, and PPOS methods comprised 25, 12, 2, and 8 cases, respectively. No significant difference in parameters between CH group and non-CH groups, excepting FSH was observed. The FSH was used in CH group and non-CH group at dose of 1108 ± 468 IU and 1756 ± 394 IU, respectively (p < 0.0001).Conclusion. CH is not commonly used due to potential luteal phase defects, but it is thought to be cost-effective, requiring lower FSH doses, requiring no ovulation suppression antagonists, and exerting no effect on frozen embryos or fetuses. Hence, CH could be a suitable protocol for egg retrieval in Japan.

We present a new measurement of the Λ4H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight K− + 4He → Λ4H + π0 reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the γ-ray energy decayed from π0. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from (K−, π−) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the Λ4H lifetime, τ(HΛ4)=206±8(stat.)±12(syst.)ps, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton (Λ3H) using the same setup in the near future.

We measured a set of π±Σ∓, π0Σ0, and π−Σ0 invariant mass spectra below and above the K¯N mass threshold in K−-induced reactions on deuteron. The measured πΣ mass spectral shape is well reproduced via the two-step mechanism, i.e., a neutron knocked out at a forward angle from a deuteron by an incident K−, with the K¯ recoiled backward reacting with the residual nucleon to produce π and Σ. We deduced the S-wave K¯N→πΣ and K¯N→K¯N scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a K¯N and πΣ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to Λ(1405) is located at 1417.7−7.4+6.0 (fitting errors)−1.0+1.1 (systematic errors) + [−26.1−7.9+6.0 (fitting errors)−2.0+1.7 (systematic errors)] i MeV/c2, closer to the K¯N mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

The protoclusters in the epoch of reionization, traced by galaxy overdensity regions, are ideal laboratories for studying the process of stellar assembly and cosmic reionization. We present the spectroscopic confirmation of the core of the most distant protocluster at z = 7.88, A2744-z7p9OD, with the James Webb Space Telescope NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy. The core region includes as many as four galaxies detected in [O iii ] 4960 and 5008 Å in a small area of ∼3″ × 3″, corresponding to ∼11 × 11 kpc, after the lensing magnification correction. Three member galaxies are also tentatively detected in dust continuum in Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 6, which is consistent with their red ultraviolet continuum slopes, β ∼ −1.3. The member galaxies have stellar masses in the range of log( M _* / M _⊙ ) ∼7.6–9.2 and star formation rates of ∼3–50 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , showing a diversity in their properties. FirstLight cosmological simulations reproduce the physical properties of the member galaxies including the stellar mass, [O iii ] luminosity, and dust-to-stellar mass ratio, and predict that the member galaxies are on the verge of merging in a few to several tens of Myr to become a large galaxy with M _* ∼ 6 × 10 ^9 M _⊙ . The presence of a multiple merger and evolved galaxies in the core region of A2744-z7p9OD indicates that environmental effects are already at work 650 Myr after the Big Bang.

Drilling fluid infiltration during well drilling may induce pore pressure and strain perturbations in neighbored reservoir formations. In this study, we report that such small strain changes (∼20 µε) have been in situ monitored using fiber-optic distributed strain sensing (DSS) in two observation wells with different distances (approximately 3 and 9 m) from the new drilled wellbore in a shallow water aquifer. The results show the layered pattern of the drilling-induced hydromechanical deformation. The pattern could be indicative of (1) fluid pressure diffusion through each zone with distinct permeabilities or (2) the heterogeneous formation damage caused by the mud filter cakes during the drilling. A coupled hydromechanical model is used to interpret the two possibilities. The DSS method could be deployed in similar applications such as geophysical well testing with fluid injection (or extraction) and in studying reservoir fluid flow behavior with hydromechanical responses. The DSS method would be useful for understanding reservoir pressure communication, determining the zones for fluid productions or injection (e.g., for CO2 storage), and optimizing reservoir management and utilization.

We observed a distinct peak in the Λp invariant mass spectrum of He3(K−,Λp)n, well below mK+2mp, i.e., the mass threshold of the K− to be bound to two protons. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region q=350∼650 MeV/c, one can kinematically separate the peak from the quasi-free process, K‾N→K‾N followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons K‾NN→ΛN. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit–Wigner pole position at BKpp=47±3(stat.)−6+3(sys.) MeV having a width ΓKpp=115±7(stat.)−20+10(sys.) MeV, and the S-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter QKpp=381±14(stat.)−0+57(sys.) MeV/c, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness – “K−pp”. The triple alpha reaction is one of the most important reactions in the nuclear astrophysics. However, its reaction rate in high temperature environments at T9> 2 was still uncertain. One of the major origins of the uncertainty was that the radiative-decay probability of the 31− state in 12C was unknown. In the present work, we have determined the radiative-decay probability of the 31− state to be 1.3−1.1+1.2×10−6 by measuring the 1H(12C,12Cp) reaction for the first time, and derived the triple alpha reaction rate in high temperature environments from the measured radiative-decay probability. The present result suggests that the 31− state noticeably enhances the triple alpha reaction rate although the contribution from the 31− state had been assumed to be small.

The low-lying dipole strength in the 90,94Zr nuclei was investigated via (p,p′γ) at 80 MeV and (α,α′γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For 94Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for 90Zr these are the first data with (p,p′γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α,α′γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ,γ′) data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes.DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1− states in 90,94Zr. The (p,p′γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α,α′γ) data. The isoscalar strength for 90Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of 94Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV.Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α,α′γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1− states below the particle binding energy.

The β decay of 75192Re117, which lies near the boundary between the regions of predicted prolate and oblate deformations, has been investigated using the KEK Isotope Separation System (KISS) in RIKEN Nishina Center. This is the first case in which a low-energy beam of rhenium isotope has been successfully extracted from an argon gas-stopping cell using a laser-ionization technique, following production via multi-nucleon transfer between heavy ions. The ground state of 192Re has been assigned Jπ=(0−) based on the observed β feedings and deduced logft values towards the 0+ and 2+ states in 192Os, which is known as a typical γ-soft nucleus. The shape transition from axial symmetry to axial asymmetry in the Re isotopes is discussed from the viewpoint of single-particle structure using the nuclear Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model.

Excited states of 77Cu have been investigated by use of single proton knock-out reaction at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory in RIKEN in order to reveal the main components of the proton single-particle states. Three excited states were observed at 271, 902 and 2068 keV in 77Cu. The lowest-energy excited state follows the trend predicted for the crossing of the 3/21− and 5/21− states. Comparing the excitation energies of the 3/2−, 5/2− and 7/2− levels from 69Cu to 77Cu one can see that the Z=28 shell gap between the p3/2 and f7/2 states is rather stable, while the f5/2−f7/2 spin–orbit splitting decreases by ∼1.5 MeV in agreement with shell model calculations using the tensor force.

Magic numbers are associated with the stability of atomic nuclei. Here, the authors analyse the proton radii, binding energies and electric quadrupole transition rates of neutron-rich carbon isotopes at proton number six and use nuclear structure models to support the magic number Z = 6.

We propose a multiple-input-multiple-output (M x N) optical switch with the same optical system as that used for a single-input-multiple-output (1 x N) switch based on a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS). The proposed M x N switch can route multiple signals simultaneously from different plural inputs to plural outputs, which is called multipole multithrow (MPMT). In addition, our switch configuration can multiply an MPMT switch due to its multicast capacity by beam splitting with holographic phase modulation on the LCOS. We demonstrate a two-degree ROADM using our proposed 4 x 4 wavelength selective switch. The experimental results show that a two-degree ROADM node can be realized by using this switch. The increase in the insertion loss caused by the MPMT switching function is 3 dB due to beam splitting and 3-4.1 dB due to imperfections in the holographic phase modulations. The maximum port crosstalk (XT) is -20.0 dB.

The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn has been extracted from proton inelastic scattering experiments at Ep=295 MeV and at forward angles including 0°. It differs from the results of a Sn120(γ,γ′) experiment and peaks at an excitation energy of 8.3 MeV. The total strength corresponds to 2.3(2)% of the energy-weighted sum rule and is more than three times larger than what is observed with the (γ,γ′) reaction. This implies a strong fragmentation of the E1 strength and/or small ground state branching ratios of the excited 1− states. Neutron diffraction measurement of powder α-Fe sample at 295 K was carried out at the high resolution powder diffractometer installed at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Crystal parameters were determined from Rietveld analysis. The correlation effects among thermal displacements of atoms were estimated from a generalized equation based on the results of fomer diffuse scattering analysis. The force constants among atoms were obtained using an equation for transforming of the correlation effects to force constants. The force constants and the crystal structure of α-Fe were used to estimate the phonon dispersion relations, phonon density of states, and specific heat by computer simulation. The obtained force constants among first-nearest-neighboring atoms is 2.3 eV/Å2 at 295 K and the specific heat is 185 meV/K at 150 K. The calculated phonon dispersion relations and specific heat of α-Fe are similar to those obtained from inelastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements, respectively

β-Amyloid (Aβ) plaques in Alzheimer (AD) brains are surrounded by severe dendritic and axonal changes, including local spine loss, axonal swellings and distorted neurite trajectories. Whether and how plaques induce these neuropil abnormalities remains unknown. We tested the hypothesis that oligomeric assemblies of Aβ, seen in the periphery of plaques, mediate the neurodegenerative phenotype of AD by triggering activation of the enzyme GSK-3β, which in turn appears to inhibit a transcriptional program mediated by CREB. We detect increased activity of GSK-3β after exposure to oligomeric Aβ in neurons in culture, in the brain of double transgenic APP/tau mice and in AD brains. Activation of GSK-3β, even in the absence of Aβ, is sufficient to produce a phenocopy of Aβ-induced dendritic spine loss in neurons in culture, while pharmacological inhibition of GSK-3β prevents spine loss and increases expression of CREB-target genes like BDNF. Of note, in transgenic mice GSK-3β inhibition ameliorated plaque-related neuritic changes and increased CREB-mediated gene expression. Moreover, GSK-3β inhibition robustly decreased the oligomeric Aβ load in the mouse brain. All these findings support the idea that GSK3β is aberrantly activated by the presence of Aβ, and contributes, at least in part, to the neuronal anatomical derangement associated with Aβ plaques in AD brains and to Aβ pathology itself.

We report on serial MRI findings of cerebral lesions in a 55-year-old man with severe Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD). The first MRI change on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images was hyperintensity in the genu of the corpus callosum and in the frontoparietal cortex. Following this change, a splenial lesion appeared. The first MRI change in the genu of the corpus callosum was not associated with a change in diffusion on diffusion-weighted MRI imaging, suggesting a pathological change involving vasogenic edema. Development of cortical lesions in the initial stage confirms that cortical lesions result from the primary pathogenetic process induced by alcoholic intoxication and malnutrition in MBD.

We show that using borehole measurements in tectonomagnetic experiments allows enhancement of the observed signals. New magnetic dipoles, which vary with stress changes from mechanical sources, are produced on the walls of the borehole. We evaluate such an effect quantitatively. First we formulate a general expression for the borehole effect due to any arbitrary source models. This is valid everywhere above the ground surface as well as within the cylindrical hole. A first-order approximate solution is given by a line of horizontal dipoles and vertical quadrupoles along the central axis of the borehole, which is valid above the ground surface and a slightly away (several tens of cm) from the top of the borehole. Selecting the Mogi model as an example, we numerically evaluated the borehole effect. It turned out that the vertical quadrupoles produce two orders of magnitude more intense magnetic field than the horizontal dipoles. The borehole effect is very local, i.e. detectable only within a few m from its outlet, since it is of the same order or more than the case without a borehole. However, magnetic lines of force cannot reach the ground surface from a deeper portion (>10 m) of a borehole.
