To compare the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of traction radiographs with 2-dimensional computed tomography (2D CT) in distal humerus fracture classification and characterization.Randomized controlled radiographic review of retrospectively collected data.Academic Level 1 trauma center.Skeletally mature patients with intra-articular distal humerus fractures with both traction radiographs and CT scans were reviewed by 11 orthopaedists from different subspecialties and training levels.The intervention involved traction radiographs and 2D CT.The main outcome measurements included interobserver and intraobserver reliability of fracture classification by the OTA/AO and Jupiter-Mehne and determination of key fracture characteristics.For the OTA/AO and Jupiter-Mehne classifications, we found a moderate intraobserver agreement with both 2D CT and traction radiographs (κ = 0.70-0.75). When compared with traction radiographs, 2D CT improved the interobserver reliability of the OTA/AO classification from fair to moderate (κ = 0.3 to κ = 0.42) and the identification of a coronal fracture from slight to fair (κ = 0.2 to κ = 0.34), which was more pronounced in a subgroup analysis of less-experienced surgeons. When compared with 2D CT, traction radiographs improved the intraobserver reliability of detecting stable affected articular fragments from fair to substantial (κ = 0.4 to κ = 0.67).Traction radiographs provide similar diagnostic characteristics as 2D CT in distal humerus fractures. For less-experienced surgeons, 2D CT may improve the identification of coronal fracture lines and articular comminution.

During an oomycete survey in December 2015, 10 previously unknown Halophytophthora taxa were isolated from marine and brackish water of tidal ponds and channels in saltmarshes, lagoon ecosystems and river estuaries at seven sites along the Algarve coast in the South of Portugal. Phylogenetic analyses of LSU and ITS datasets, comprising all described Halophytophthora species, the 10 new Halophytophthora taxa and all relevant and distinctive sequences available from GenBank, provided an updated phylogeny of the genus Halophytophthora s. str. showing for the first time a structure of 10 clades designated as Clades 1–10. Nine of the 10 new Halophytophthora taxa resided in Clade 6 together with H. polymorphica and H. vesicula. Based on differences in morphology and temperature-growth relations and a multigene (LSU, ITS, Btub, hsp90, rpl10, tigA, cox1, nadh1, rps10) phylogeny, eight new Halophytophthora taxa from Portugal are described here as H. brevisporangia, H. celeris, H. frigida, H. lateralis, H. lusitanica, H. macrosporangia, H. sinuata and H. thermoambigua. Three species, H. frigida, H. macrosporangia and H. sinuata, have a homothallic breeding system while the remaining five species are sterile. Pathogenicity and litter decomposition tests are underway to clarify their pathological and ecological role in the marine and brackish-water ecosystems. More oomycete surveys in yet undersurveyed regions of the world and population genetic or phylogenomic analyses of global populations are needed to clarify the origin of the new Halophytophthora species.

The radio signal transmitted by the Mars Express (MEX) spacecraft was observed regularly between the years 2013-2020 at X-band (8.42 GHz) using the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry (EVN) network and University of Tasmania's telescopes. We present a method to describe the solar wind parameters by quantifying the effects of plasma on our radio signal. In doing so, we identify all the uncompensated effects on the radio signal and see which coronal processes drive them. From a technical standpoint, quantifying the effect of the plasma on the radio signal helps phase referencing for precision spacecraft tracking. The phase fluctuation of the signal was determined for Mars' orbit for solar elongation angles from 0 - 180 deg. The calculated phase residuals allow determination of the phase power spectrum. The total electron content (TEC) of the solar plasma along the line of sight is calculated by removing effects from mechanical and ionospheric noises. The spectral index was determined as $-2.43 \pm 0.11$ which is in agreement with Kolomogorov's turbulence. The theoretical models are consistent with observations at lower solar elongations however at higher solar elongation ($>$160 deg) we see the observed values to be higher. This can be caused when the uplink and downlink signals are positively correlated as a result of passing through identical plasma sheets., The paper has 13 figures and one table. This is the second version of the YOPP Implementation Plan and covers the operational phase of the project. The operational phase commenced in mid 2017 and was to run to mid 2019 but due to logistic and other considerations some aspects of the operational phase did not actually complete until the end of August 2022.

Biological constraints in diseased tissues have motivated the need for small nanocarriers (10–30 nm) to achieve sufficient vascular extravasation and pervasive tumor penetration. This particle size limit is only an order of magnitude larger than small molecules, such that cargo loading is better described by co-assembly processes rather than simple encapsulation. Understanding the structural, kinetic, and energetic contributions of carrier-cargo co-assembly is thus critical to achieve molecular-level control towards predictable in vivo behavior. These interconnected set of properties were systematically examined using sub-20 nm self-assembled nanocarriers known as three-helix micelles (3HM). Both hydrophobicity and the “geometric packing parameter” dictate small molecule compatibility with 3HM's alkyl tail core. Planar obelisk-like apomorphine and doxorubicin (DOX) molecules intercalated well within the 3HM core and near the core-shell interface, forming an integral component to the co-assembly, as corroborated by small-angle X-ray and neutron-scattering structural studies. DOX promoted crystalline alkyl tail ordering, which significantly increased (+63%) the activation energy of 3HM subunit exchange. Subsequently, 3HM-DOX displayed slow-release kinetics (t1/2 = 40 h) at physiological temperatures, with ~50× greater cargo preference for the micelle core as described by two drug partitioning coefficients (micellar core/shell Kp1 ~ 24, and shell/bulk solvent Kp2 ~ 2). The geometric and energetic insights between nanocarrier and their small molecule cargos developed here will aid in broader efforts to deconvolute the interconnected properties of carrier-drug co-assemblies. Adding this knowledge to pharmacological and immunological explorations will expand our understanding of nanomedicine behavior throughout all the physical and in vivo processes they are intended to encounter.

Two methods for the determination of pKa values of weak acids are described, a direct titration with dimsyl potassium in the presence of an indicator and a back-titration in which an analyte/indicator mixture is deprotonated and then titrated with ammonium chloride. Both methods have been validated by measuring pKa values of compounds, for which values had been determined previously. The back-titration method was applied to measure pKa values of two 1,3-dithiane-derived bissulfoxides and a monosulfone.

Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is an evergreen tree native to SW Europe and NW Africa. It covers 2·106 ha in the western Mediterranean basin, forms heterogeneous forest ecosystems and represents an important source of income derived from cork production. While in Iberia, Italy, Tunisia and Algeria, drought and several endemic pathogens have been associated with cork oak decline (Moricca et al. 2016; Smahi et al. 2017), in Morocco there is no evidence, apart from overgrazing and human intervention (Fennane and Rejdali 2015), of a pathogen associated with oak decline. In December 2019, extensive dieback and mortality of 60-year-old cork oak trees were observed in a natural stand of ca 150 ha located 5 km east from Touazithe, in Maâmora forest, Morocco (34°13'38''N, 6°14'51''W - 87 m a.s.l.). Two years before, Q. suber seedlings from a local nursery were planted to increase tree density. Symptoms in trees and planted seedlings included chlorosis, reddish-brown discoloration of the whole crown and dieback starting in the upper crown. Root rot and lack of fine roots were observed. Tree mortality was estimated at ca 30%, and disease incidences of trees and seedlings were 45 and 70%, respectively. A Phytophthora species was consistently isolated from the rhizosphere of 3 symptomatic trees randomly selected at the site using leaves as bait (Jung et al. 1996). On carrot agar Phytophthora colonies were uniform and cottonwool-like. Sporangia were typically terminal, with ovoid, and obpyriform shape, mostly papillate, measuring 30.7 ± 4.7 µm length and 22.7 ± 4.1 µm wide. Oogonia were produced in single culture, and they were globose to subglobose, elongated to ellipsoid, 32.1 ± 2.9 µm in diameter and 46.1 ± 4.8 µm in length. Oospores were usually spherical, thick-walled, and measured 28.1 ± 2.4 µm. Antheridia were paragynous, mostly spherical, measuring 12.2 ± 1.4 µm. Isolates had minimum and maximum temperatures of 5 °C and 30 °C, respectively, and a growth optimum at 20 °C. Apart from the small size of sporangia, features were typical of Phytophthora quercina Jung. The identity of a representative strain (TJ1500) was corroborated by sequencing the ITS and mitochondrial cox1 gene regions, and BLAST search in GenBank showed 100% homology with sequences of the ex-type culture of P. quercina (KF358229 and KF358241 accessions, respectively). Both sequences of the representative isolate were submitted to GenBank (accessions OP086243 and OP290549). The strain TJ1500 is currently stored within the culture collections of the Mendel University in Brno and the University of Sassari. Its pathogenicity was verified and compared with a P. cinnamomi strain in a soil infestation test with one-year-old cork oak seedlings (Corcobado et al. 2017). Five months after inoculation, the symptoms described were observed in the seedlings, and fine root weight of plants inoculated with the TJ1500 strain and P. cinnamomi was reduced by 19 and 42%, respectively, in relation to non-inoculated controls. The pathogen was re-isolated from the necrotic roots, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. So far, P. quercina has been reported associated with chronic mortality of cork oak in new plantations in Spain (Martín-García et al. 2015; Jung et al. 2016) and natural forests in Italy (Seddaiu et al. 2020). To our knowledge this is the first report of P. quercina in Morocco. Givenat Morocco is an important cork producing country, our finding warns about the risk this pathogen poses to Q. suber and other North African oaks.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) evoked by two pure tones carry information about the mechanisms that generate and shape them. Thus, DPOAEs hold promise for providing powerful noninvasive diagnostic details of cochlear operations, middle ear (ME) transmission, and impairments. DPOAEs are sensitive to ME function because they are influenced by ME transmission twice, i.e., by the inward-going primary tones in the forward direction and the outward traveling DPOAEs in the reverse direction. However, the effects of ME injuries on DPOAEs have not been systematically characterized. The current study focused on exploring the utility of DPOAEs for examining ME function by methodically characterizing DPOAEs and ME transmission under pathological ME conditions, specifically under conditions of tympanic-membrane (TM) perforation and spontaneous healing. Results indicated that DPOAEs were measurable with TM perforations up to ~50%, and DPOAE reductions increased with increasing size of the TM perforation. Understanding the complex interplay of factors affecting nanoparticle accumulation in solid tumors is a challenge that must be surmounted to develop effective cancer nanomedicine. Among other unique microenvironment properties, tumor vascular permeability is an important feature of leaky tumor vessels which enables nanoparticles to extravasate. However, permeability has thus far been measured by intravital microscopy on optical window tumors, which has many limitations of its own. Additionally, mathematical models of particle tumor transport are often too complicated to be accessible to most researchers. Here, we present a more simplified and accessible mathematical model based on diffusive flux, which uses particle tumor accumulation and plasma pharmacokinetics to yield effective permeability, Peff. This model, called diffusive flux modeling (DFM), allows effects from multiple parameters to be decoupled and is also the first demonstration, to the best our knowledge, of extracting Peff values from bulk biodistribution results (e.g., routine positron emission tomography studies). The DFM equation was used to explain in vivo results of sub-20 nm nanocarriers called three-helix-micelles (3HM), particularly 3HM's selective accumulation in different tumor models. When DFM was applied to multiple published biodistribution data, a semiquantitative comparison of various tumor models, particle size, and active targeting strategies could be made. The analysis clearly pointed out the importance of balancing multiple characteristics of nanoparticles to ensure successful treatment outcome and highlights the usefulness of this simple model for initial particle design, selection, and subsequent optimization.

BackgroundIn contrast with the setting of acute myocardial infarction, there are limited data regarding the impact of diabetes mellitus on clinical outcomes in contemporary cohorts of patients with chronic coronary syndromes. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and prognostic impact of diabetes according to geographical regions and ethnicity.Methods and resultsCLARIFY is an observational registry of patients with chronic coronary syndromes, enrolled across 45 countries in Europe, Asia, America, Middle East, Australia, and Africa in 2009–2010, and followed up yearly for 5 years. Chronic coronary syndromes were defined by ≥1 of the following criteria: prior myocardial infarction, evidence of coronary stenosis >50%, proven symptomatic myocardial ischaemia, or prior revascularization procedure.Among 32 694 patients, 9502 (29%) had diabetes, with a regional prevalence ranging from below 20% in Northern Europe to ∼60% in the Gulf countries. In a multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, diabetes was associated with increased risks for the primary outcome (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) with an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.28 (95% confidence interval 1.18, 1.39) and for all secondary outcomes (all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, and coronary revascularization). Differences on outcomes according to geography and ethnicity were modest.ConclusionIn patients with chronic coronary syndromes, diabetes is independently associated with mortality and cardiovascular events, including heart failure, which is not accounted by demographics, prior medical history, left ventricular ejection fraction, or use of secondary prevention medication. The fate of nanocarrier materials at the cellular level constitutes a critical checkpoint in the development of effective nanomedicines, determining whether tissue level accumulation results in therapeutic benefit. The cytotoxicity and cell internalization of ~18 nm 3-helix micelle (3HM) loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) was analyzed in patient-derived glioblastoma (GBM) cells in vitro. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 3HM-DOX increased to 6.2 µg/mL from < 0.5 µg/mL for free DOX in patient derived GBM6 cells, 15.0 µg/mL from 6.5 µg/mL in U87MG cells, and 21.5 µg/mL from ~0.5 µg/mL in LN229 cells. Modeling analysis of previous 3HM biodistribution results predict these cytotoxic concentrations are achievable with intravenous injection in rodent GBM models. 3HM-DOX formulations were internalized intact and underwent intracellular trafficking distinct from free DOX. 3HM was quantified to have an internalization half-life of 12.6 h in GBM6 cells, significantly longer than comparable reported liposome and polymer systems. 3HM was found to traffic through active endocytic processes, with clathrin-mediated endocytosis being the most involved of the pathways studied. Inhibition studies suggest substantial involvement of low density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) in initiating 3HM uptake. Since 3HM surface is polyethylene glycol (PEG)-ylated with no targeting functionalities, protein corona involvement in 3HM recognition is expected. The present work develops insights of the cytotoxicity, pharmacodynamics and cellular interactions of 3HM and 3HM-DOX relevant for ongoing pre-clinical studies. This work also contributes to efforts to develop predictive mathematical models tracking accumulation and biodistribution kinetics at a systemic level.Graphical Abstract

We present the world-first demonstration of 28-nm embedded MRAM (eMRAM) for frame buffer memory, highlighting the smallest macro size (0.08 mm2/Mb) reported to date. Compared to SRAM that is commonly used for frame buffer memory, eMRAM provides 47% area saving. For frame buffer applications, read disturbance and endurance are the most critical reliability considerations. With magnetic tunnel junction process improvements, we have verified sufficient read disturbance margins and met the endurance requirement (> 1E10 cycles) which corresponds to 10-year continuous usage. Compared to flash-type eMRAM, we have achieved 40% switching current reduction with < 50ns read/write speed.

Issue Colorectal cancer (CRC) has been among the most important cancer causes of death globally. CRC screening and early detection can decrease CRC incidence and mortality through timely removal of colorectal neoplasia or early CRC treatment. CRC screening has been initiated in the Czech Republic in 2000 for individuals over 50, with GPs having a key role in recruiting individuals to screening, offering faecal occult blood test (FOBT). Screening colonoscopy (CS) was added for individuals over 55 since 2009. Description of the problem To increase uptake of CRC screening, personal invitation of non-attenders under 70 was implemented in 2014, along with temporary mass-media campaign. Health insurance companies have been sending invitations to those individuals without record of recent FOBT, CS or CRC treatment. The aim of our study was to evaluate impact of this policy on complete coverage by examination over 2013-2018. We defined the complete coverage by examination as the proportion of individuals aged 50-69 undergoing examination with CRC early detection potential (FOBT or CS for any indication) during past 3 years. We used newly established National Registry of Reimbursed Health Services as the source of data. Results Complete coverage of the target population (2.7 million individuals aged 50-69) was 44.8 % in 2013. By 2016, the coverage increased to 54.6%. Therefore, almost 300,000 individuals were newly covered by the relevant examinations. By 2018, the coverage decreased to 51.2%. When we consider only screening FOBT examinations, the coverage was 36.9 % in 2013, 45.2% in 2016, and 42.0% in 2018. Lessons In the health system with accessible CS facilities, the policy of non-attenders' invitation for CRC screening resulted not only in increase in coverage by screening examinations; complete coverage also increased. Unfortunately, the positive effect has been fading out, and further actions to sustain high coverage are therefore warranted. Key messages Invitation of non-attenders to colorectal cancer screening increased complete coverage of the target population by examination. Initial increase was followed by a slow decrease in coverage by examination, underlying the need for other actions to increase participation.

Tympanic membranes (TM) that have healed spontaneously after perforation present abnormalities in their structural and mechanical properties; i.e., they are thickened and abnormally dense. These changes result in a deterioration of middle ear (ME) sound transmission, which is clinically presented as a conductive hearing loss (CHL). To fully understand the ME sound transmission under TM pathological conditions, we created a gerbil model with a controlled 50% pars tensa perforation, which was left to heal spontaneously for up to 4 weeks (TM perforations had fully sealed after 2 weeks). After the recovery period, the ME sound transmission, both in the forward and reverse directions, was directly measured with two-tone stimulation. Measurements were performed at the input, the ossicular chain, and output of the ME system, i.e., at the TM, umbo, and scala vestibuli (SV) next to the stapes. We found that variations in ME transmission in forward and reverse directions were not symmetric. In the forward direction, the ME pressure gain decreased in a frequency-dependent manner, with smaller loss (within 10 dB) at low frequencies and more dramatic loss at high frequency regions. The loss pattern was mainly from the less efficient acoustical to mechanical coupling between the TM and umbo, with little changes along the ossicular chain. In the reverse direction, the variations in these ears are relatively smaller. Our results provide detailed functional observations that explain CHL seen in clinical patients with abnormal TM, e.g., caused by otitis media, that have healed spontaneously after perforation or post-tympanoplasty, especially at high frequencies. In addition, our data demonstrate that changes in distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) result from altered ME transmission in both the forward and reverse direction by a reduction of the effective stimulus levels and less efficient transfer of DPs from the ME into the ear canal. This confirms that DPOAEs can be used to assess both the health of the cochlea and the middle ear.

Context. Realistic synthetic observations of theoretical source models are essential for our understanding of real observational data. In using synthetic data, one can verify the extent to which source parameters can be recovered and evaluate how various data corruption effects can be calibrated. These studies are the most important when proposing observations of new sources, in the characterization of the capabilities of new or upgraded instruments, and when verifying model-based theoretical predictions in a direct comparison with observational data. Aims. We present the SYnthetic Measurement creator for long Baseline Arrays (SYMBA), a novel synthetic data generation pipeline for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. SYMBA takes into account several realistic atmospheric, instrumental, and calibration effects. Methods. We used SYMBA to create synthetic observations for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a millimetre VLBI array, which has recently captured the first image of a black hole shadow. After testing SYMBA with simple source and corruption models, we study the importance of including all corruption and calibration effects, compared to the addition of thermal noise only. Using synthetic data based on two example general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) model images of M 87, we performed case studies to assess the image quality that can be obtained with the current and future EHT array for different weather conditions. Results. Our synthetic observations show that the effects of atmospheric and instrumental corruptions on the measured visibilities are significant. Despite these effects, we demonstrate how the overall structure of our GRMHD source models can be recovered robustly with the EHT2017 array after performing calibration steps, which include fringe fitting, a priori amplitude and network calibration, and self-calibration. With the planned addition of new stations to the EHT array in the coming years, images could be reconstructed with higher angular resolution and dynamic range. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to synthesized NiO nanostructures by sol-gel method and characterized them for use in dye sensitized solar cells. For this purpose, a paste prepared from nanoparticles was prepared and screen printed on a glass substrate with the FTO layer. Design/methodology/approach: Nickel oxide nanoparticles was synthesized with participation of nickel (II) nitrate hexahydrate and citric acid. The prepared nanopowder has been subjected to structural analysis using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images were taken with a Zeiss Supra 35. Qualitative studies of chemical composition were also performed using the Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The structure of nickel oxide was investigated by X-ray crystallography. An average crystallite size were calculated using Scherrer method and Williamson-Hall analysis. Light harvesting efficiency LHE was calculated from measured absorbance. Findings: The uniform nickel oxide nanoparticles with spherical shape were successfully produced by sol-gel method. The diameter of the as prepared nanoparticles does not exceed 25 nm which is confirmed by the XRD and TEM analysis. The light harvesting efficiency of the electrode in the entire studied range it’s over 90%. Therefore the NiO can be an attractive alternative to the most commonly used TiO2. Research limitations/implications: The next step in the research will be to investigate the ZnO/NiO composite on the properties of the photoelectrode of dye sensitized solar cell. Practical implications: The unique properties of produced NiO nanostructural materials have caused their interest in such fields as medicine, transparent electronics and photovoltaics. Originality/value: The NiO nanoparticles were prepared using sol-gel method and then effectively used in the photoanode of dye sensitized solar cell.

In this paper, taking the positions of pico-cell base stations (PBSs) into consideration, a scheme of cell range expansion (CRE) for maximum sum rate is addressed in heterogeneous multi-input multi-output multi-user wireless networks. The optimal CRE bias obtained numerically by the proposed CRE scheme with inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) allows us to maximize the sum rate while successfully maintaining the load balance between the macrocell base station and PBSs. Numerical results confirm that the proposed CRE scheme with ICIC can provide higher sum rate than conventional schemes and balanced load.
