Abstract We present Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of an electron‐scale reconnecting current sheet in the mixing region along the trailing edge of a Kelvin‐Helmholtz vortex during southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. Within this region, we observe intense electrostatic wave activity, consistent with lower‐hybrid waves. These waves lead to the transport of high‐density magnetosheath plasma across the boundary layer into the magnetosphere and generate a mixing region with highly compressed magnetic field lines, leading to the formation of a thin current sheet associated with electron‐scale reconnection signatures. Consistencies between these reconnection signatures and a realistic, local, fully‐kinetic simulation modeling this current sheet indicate a temporal evolution of the observed electron‐scale reconnection current sheet. The multi‐scale and inter‐process character of this event can help us understand plasma mixing connected to the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability and the temporal evolution of electron‐scale reconnection.

At the Earth’s low-latitude magnetopause, the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) waves, which are driven by the super-Alfvénic velocity shear across the magnetopause, have been frequently observed during periods of northward interplanetary-magnetic-field (IMF) and believed to contribute to efficiently transporting the solar wind plasmas into the magnetosphere. On the other hand, during southward IMF periods, the signatures of the KH waves are much less frequently observed and how the KH waves contribute to the solar wind transport has not been well explored. Recently, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission successfully detected signatures of the KH waves near the dusk-flank of the magnetopause during southward IMF. In this study, we analyzed a series of two- and three-dimensional fully kinetic simulations modeling this MMS event. The results show that a turbulent evolution of the lower-hybrid drift instability (LHDI) near the low-density (magnetospheric) side of the edge layer of the KH waves rapidly disturbs the structure of the layer and causes an effective transport of plasmas across the layer. The obtained transport rate is comparable to or even larger than that predicted for the northward IMF. These results indicate that the diffusive solar wind transport induced by the KH waves may be active at the flank-to-tail magnetopause during southward IMF.

Coalescence of multiple magnetic islands is recognized as an effective process to energize particles during magnetic reconnection, while its energy conversion process still remains unclear. Here, a two-dimensional fully kinetic simulation of multiple island coalescence with a small reconnection guide field is studied. In the analysis of energy conversion within a magnetic island, the dot product of ${{\boldsymbol{V}}}_{e}\cdot \left({\boldsymbol{j}}\times {\boldsymbol{B}}\right)={w}_{1}$ is a useful quantity to compare with j · E = w _2 , since the average work done by the Lorentz force on the circulating particles is negligible in the island and ${w}_{2}-{w}_{1}={\boldsymbol{j}}\cdot \left({\boldsymbol{E}}+{{\boldsymbol{V}}}_{e}\times {\boldsymbol{B}}\right)={\boldsymbol{j}}\cdot {{\boldsymbol{E}}}^{{\prime} }={w}_{3}$ . A bipolar pattern of w _1 is found at a secondary island when the electrons are in circular motion inside the island. Significant energy dynamo ( w _3 < 0) resulting from j _∥ E _∥ is found at the secondary island, which has not been reported before, where the parallel electric field E _∥ is highly correlated with w _3 . Moreover, significant energy dissipation ( w _3 > 0) due to ${{\boldsymbol{j}}}_{\perp }\cdot {{\boldsymbol{E}}}_{\perp }^{{\prime} }$ is seen in the merging region between two coalescing islands. Both types of energy conversions are accompanied by enhancements in j _∥ and the parallel electron temperature T _e _∥ . Three ion-scale magnetic islands (FR1, FR2, and FR3) observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft are compared favorably with the simulated signatures of energy dynamo and dissipation of an evolving secondary island. In particular, FR1 displayed a similar energy dynamo signature as that simulated in an early stage of the secondary island. FR2 and FR3 showed a dominant ${{\boldsymbol{j}}}_{\perp }\cdot {{\boldsymbol{E}}}_{\perp }^{{\prime} }$ energy conversion similar to that obtained in a later stage of the secondary island.

On May 5, 2017 MMS observed a bifurcated current sheet at the boundary of Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices (KHVs) developed on the dawnside tailward magnetopause. We use the event to enhance our understanding of the formation and structure of asymmetric current sheets in the presence of density asymmetry, flow shear, and guide field, which have been rarely studied. The entire current layer comprises three separate current sheets, each corresponding to magnetosphere-side sunward separatrix region, central near-X-line region, and magnetosheath-side tailward separatrix region. Two off-center structures are identified as slow-mode discontinuities. All three current sheets have a thickness of ∼0.2 ion inertial length, demonstrating the sub-ion-scale current layer, where electrons mainly carry the current. We find that both the diamagnetic and electron anisotropy currents substantially support the bifurcated currents in the presence of density asymmetry and weak velocity shear. The combined effects of strong guide field, low density asymmetry, and weak flow shear appear to lead to asymmetries in the streamlines and the current-layer structure of the quadrupolar reconnection geometry. We also investigate intense electrostatics waves observed on the magnetosheath side of the KHV boundary. These waves may pre-heat a magnetosheath population that is to participate into the reconnection process, leading to two-step energization of the magnetosheath plasma entering into the magnetosphere via KHV-driven reconnection.

Vortex-induced reconnection originates from non-linear vortex flows due to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the Earth’s magnetosphere. Here, the authors perform a large-scale kinetic simulation to unveil dynamics of the vortex-induced reconnection and resulting turbulent mixing process.

We present the first results of a data analysis method, developed by Sonnerup and Hasegawa (2011), for reconstructing three-dimensional (3-D), magnetohydrostatic structures from data taken as two closely spaced satellites traverse the structures. The method is applied to a magnetic flux transfer event (FTE), which was encountered on 27 June 2007 by at least three (TH-C, TH-D, and TH-E) of the five THEMIS probes near the subsolar magnetopause. The FTE was sandwiched between two oppositely directed reconnection jets under a southward interplanetary magnetic field condition, consistent with its generation by multiple X-line reconnection. The recovered 3-D field indicates that a magnetic flux rope with a diameter of ~ 3000 km was embedded in the magnetopause. The FTE flux rope had a significant 3-D structure, because the 3-D field reconstructed from the data from TH-C and TH-D (separated by ~ 390 km) better predicts magnetic field variations actually measured along the TH-E path than does the 2-D Grad–Shafranov reconstruction using the data from TH-C (which was closer to TH-E than TH-D and was at ~ 1250 km from TH-E). Such a 3-D nature suggests that the field lines reconnected at the two X-lines on both sides of the flux rope are entangled in a complicated way through their interaction with each other. The generation process of the observed 3-D flux rope is discussed on the basis of the reconstruction results and the pitch-angle distribution of electrons observed in and around the FTE.
