2. Analysis of redox responses during TNT transformation by Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 and mutants exhibiting altered metabolism

Abstract: The transformation of trinitrotoluene (TNT) by several mutant strains of Clostridium acetobutylicum has been examined to analyze the maximal rate of initial transformation, determine the effects of metabolic mutations of the host on transformation rate, and to assess the cell metabolic changes brought about during TNT transformation. Little difference in the maximal rate of TNT degradation in early acid phase cultures was found between the parental ATCC 824 strain and strains altered in the acid forming pathways (phosphotransacetylase, or butyrate kinase) or in a high-solvent-producing strain (mutant B). This result is in agreement with the previous findings of a similar degradation rate in a degenerate strain (M5) that had lost the ability to produce solvent. A series of antisense constructs were made that reduced the expression of hydA, encoding the Fe-hydrogenase, or hydE and hydF, genes encoding hydrogenase maturating proteins. While the antisense hydA strain had only ∼30 % of the activity of wild type, the antisense hydE strain exhibited a TNT degradation rate around 70 % that of the parent. Overexpression of hydA modestly increased the TNT degradation rate in acid phase cells, suggesting the amount of reductant flowing into hydrogenase rather than the hydrogenase level itself was a limiting factor in many situations. The redox potential, hydrogen evolution, and organic acid metabolites produced during rapid TNT transformation in early log phase cultures were measured. The redox potential of the acid-producing culture decreased from -370 to -200 mV immediately after addition of TNT and the hydrogen evolution rate decreased, lowering the hydrogen to carbon dioxide ratio from 1.4 to around 1.1 for 15 min. During the time of TNT transformation, the treated acidogenic cells produced less acetate and more butyrate. The results show that during TNT transformation, the cells shift metabolism away from hydrogen formation to reduction of TNT and the resulting effects on cell redox cofactors generate a higher proportion of butyrate.

Abstract: Transcriptional analysis was performed onClostridium acetobutylicumwith the goal of identifying sugar-specific mechanisms for the transcriptional regulation of transport and metabolism genes. DNA microarrays were used to determine transcript levels from total RNA isolated from cells grown on media containing eleven different carbohydrates, including two pentoses (xylose, arabinose), four hexoses (glucose, mannose, galactose, fructose), four disaccharides (sucrose, lactose, maltose, cellobiose) and one polysaccharide (starch). Sugar-specific induction of many transport and metabolism genes indicates that these processes are regulated at the transcriptional level and are subject to carbon catabolite repression. The results show thatC. acetobutylicumutilizes symporters and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters for the uptake of pentose sugars, while disaccharides and hexoses are primarily taken up by phosphotransferase system (PTS) transporters and a gluconate : H+(GntP) transporter. The transcription of some transporter genes was induced by specific sugars, while others were induced by a subset of the sugars tested. Sugar-specific transport roles are suggested, based on expression comparisons, for various transporters of the PTS, the ABC superfamily and members of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS), including the GntP symporter family and the glycoside-pentoside-hexuronide (GPH)-cation symporter family. Additionally, updates to theC. acetobutylicumgenome annotation are proposed, including the identification of genes likely to encode proteins involved in the metabolism of arabinose and xylose via the pentose phosphate pathway.

Abstract: A partial wave analysis of pp → π0π0η′ has been performed using the η′ → π0π0η and η′ → γγ decay modes. The data are dominated by an η′ recoiling against the (ππ) S-wave. In addition, α2 (1320) → η′π0 is needed. There is evidence for contributions from α0(1450) → η′π0. The branching ratio of α0(1450) → η′π0 with respect to ηπ0 is consistent with the prediction of SU(3).

Abstract: The distribution of m ( π + π − ) in the decay η ′ → π + π − γ has been measured with the Crystal Barrel detector. The results are based on a total of 7392 observed η′ decays. The box anomaly constant is extracted from this and its value is found to agree well with theoretical expectations. The pseudoscalar nonet parameters ( f 1 , f 8 and θ PS ) are determined. Finally, we find that there is a problem of consistency between QCD and the standard VDM assumption.

Abstract: A study of p -annihilation in liquid deuterium into π − π 0 π 0 and a spectator-proton is presented. A cut on the proton-momentum of ≤ 100 MeV/ c ensures that annihilation takes place on a quasi-free neutron. A partial wave analysis shows contributions from three vector mesons, with masses and widths of (763.7 ± 3.2; 152.8 ± 4.3), (1411 ± 14; 343 ± 20); (1780 −29 +37 ; 275 ± 45) MeV/ c 2 , respectively.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data on p p → 5π 0 at rest are presented. Mass spectra for 2π0 combinations, 3π0 and 4π0 and decay angular distributions all differ significantly from phase space. We present several ways of fitting the data. All agree on the definite presence of the f0(1500), observed in its 4π0 decay mode. It can decay into ππ(1300) and into σσ where σ stands for the full ππ S-wave amplitude.

Abstract: Data on$\bar pp \to \eta \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \pi ^0 $ taken at beam momenta of 1.2 and 1.94 GeV/c reveal evidence for twoI=0JPC=2−+ resonances inηππ. The first, at 1645±14(stat.)±15(syst.) MeV with width 180−21+40±25 MeV, decays toα2(1320)π withL=0. It may be interpreted as the$q\bar q^1 $D2 partner ofπ2(1670). A strong signal is also observed just above threshold inf2(1270)η withL=0. It is 11–22 times stronger than is expected for the high mass tail of the 1645 MeV resonance. It can be fitted as a second 2−+ resonance at 1875±20±35 MeV with width 200±25±45 MeV. A third resonance havingJPC=2++ is observed at 2135±20±45 MeV withΛ=250±25±45 MeV, decaying to botha2(1320)π andf2(1270)η withL=1. There is no evidence for resonances with decays toa0(980)π, ση orf0(980)η.

Results indicate that the CSRLI holds promise for predicting suicidal risk among African American college students. These data are contrasted with a pre-existing Caucasian study of college students, and the implications are discussed.

Abstract: A retrospective review of all cholecystectomies performed at a single institution since the advent of laparoscopic cholecystectomy at that institution was undertaken. Of the 1848 cases analyzed, 1372 were completed laparoscopically. There was an increase in utilization of ERCP prior to cholecystectomy, and an increase in the number of cases being done laparoscopically for acute and gangrenous cholecystitis over the 48 months of the study. Of the 1442 cases started laparoscopically, eight technical complications were recognized, and conversion was required in five of these. Only two bile duct injuries were identified in the laparoscopic group. Data analyzed over the past 2 years of the study, when the number of surgeons performing laparoscopy remained stable, showed a decrease in both complication and conversion rates. There are no strong data to support the practice of routine intraoperative cholangiography.

Abstract: We have observed the ηπ + π − and ηπ 0 π 0 decay modes of the E meson in p p annihilation at rest into π + π − π 0 π 0 η . The mass and width of the E meson are 1409 ± 3 and 86 ± 10 MeV. The production and decay branching ratio is B( p p → Eππ)B(E → ηππ) = (3.3 ± 1.0) × 10 −3 . With a spin-parity analysis we determine that J P = 0 − . The observation of the ηπ 0 π 0 decay mode establishes that E is isoscalar ( C = +1). We find that E decays to η ( ππ ) s (where ( ππ ) s is an S-wave dipion) and πa 0 (980)(→ πη ) with a relative branching ratio of (78 ± 16) %. Using the K K π production and decay branching ratio measured earlier we determine that B[E → K K π] B[E → ηππ] = 0.61 ± 0.19 . A comparison with observations in radiative J Ψ decays suggests that E and ι η (1416) are identical.

Abstract: We confirm the existence of the two IG(JPC) = 0+(0++) resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500) reported by us in earlier analyses. The analysis presented here couples the final states π0π0π0, π0π0η and π0ηη of pp annihilation at rest. It is based on a 3 × 3 K-matrix. We find masses and widths of M = (1390±30) MeV, Γ = (380±80) MeV; and M = (1500±10) MeV, Γ = (154 ± 30) MeV, respectively. The product branching ratios for the production and decay into π0π0 and ηη of the f0(1500) are (1.27 ± 0.33) · 10−3 and (0.60 ± 0.17) · 10−3, respectively.

Abstract: The branching ratios Γ(η → 3π 0 ) Γ(η → π + π − π 0 ) = 1.44 ± 0.09 ± 0.10 and Γ(η → γγ) Γ(η → π + π − π 0 ) = 1.78 ± 0.10 ± 0.13 have been determined using the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. The latter ratio yields a partial width of Γ ( η → π + π − π 0 ) = 0.26 ± 0.03 keV using the known value for Γ ( η → γγ ). The η → π + π − π 0 ) Dalitz plot is compared to the predictions of chiral perturbation theory.

Abstract: The annihilation p p → Φγ has been investigated with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR for antiprotons stopped in liquid hydrogen. The observed branching ratio BR ( p p → Φγ = (1.7 ± 0.4) · 10 −5 is almost two orders of magnitude higher than expected from the OZI-rule. As a by-product, the branching ratios BR ( p p → K L K S ) = (9.0 ± 0.6) · 10 −4 and BR ( p p → Φπ 0 ) = (5.5 ± 0.7) · 10 −4 have been measured.

Abstract: In this report, a novel zymogram assay and coupled phosphoketolase assay were employed to demonstrate that Clostridium acetobutylicum gene CAC1343 encodes a bi-functional xylulose-5-P/fructose-6-P phosphoketolase (XFP). The specific activity of purified recombinant XFP was 6.9 U/mg on xylulose-5-P and 21 U/mg on fructose-6-P, while the specific activity of XFP in concentrated C. acetobutylicum whole-cell extract was 0.094 and 0.52 U/mg, respectively. Analysis of crude cell extracts indicated that XFP activity was present in cells grown on arabinose but not glucose and quantitative PCR was used to show that CAC1343 mRNA expression was induced 185-fold during growth on arabinose when compared to growth on glucose. HPLC analysis of metabolites revealed that during growth on xylose and glucose more butyrate than acetate was formed with final acetate:butyrate ratios of 0.72 and 0.83, respectively. Growth on arabinose caused a metabolic shift to more oxidized products with a final acetate:butyrate ratio of 1.95. The shift towards more oxidized products is consistent with the presence of an XFP, suggesting that arabinose is metabolized via a phosphoketolase pathway while xylose is probably metabolized via the pentose phosphate pathway.

Abstract: Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into 3π0 is analysed based on a data sample of about 500 000 high-quality 3π0 events. In this high-statistics Dalitz plot two structures in the region of π0π0 invariant masses of about 1500 MeV show up, a small band and a blob at higher masses. In a first attempt to describe the data two different models are used to parametrize the dynamical amplitudes leading to the same conclusion: the data require a 0+ + and also a 2+ + resonance in the 1500 MeV region.

Abstract: The decay of the η-meson into three pions plays an important role as a test of low-energy QCD calculations in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Previous experiments show results that are inconclusive or even contradictory. The Crystal Barrel experiment at LEAR has determined the braching ratiosΓ(η→3π0)/Γ(η→π+π−π0)=1.47±0.09±0.15 andΓ(η→γγ)/Γ(η→π+π−π0)=1.88±0.10±0.17 using its unique features to detect charged particles as well as neutral particles. The value for the first ratio agrees nicely with the theoretical predictions and solves previous experimental uncertainties. The second value, which yields a partial width ofΓ(η→π+π−π0)=(0.24±0.03) keV, shows that the same next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory calculations still have some problems.

Abstract: With the Crystal Barrel detector, the final state π−π0π0pS at rest in liquid deuterium was measured for the first time. A preliminary partial-wave analysis was performed, which required two interesting features: besides the ρ(770), a second pole was needed in the ππP-wave and a narrow resonance in the ππS-wave, slightly above 1500 MeV/c2. With the same parametrization a high-statistics π+π−π0 data set could also be well described.

Abstract: We have searched for new light gauge bosons produced in π 0 and η decays by studying the kinematically well-constrained reactions p p→π 0 π 0 π 0 and p p→π 0 π 0 η , where one π 0 or the η decays through the emission of a single photon recoiling against a missing state X (where X is a long-lived weakly interacting particle or X →ν ν ). No signal has been observed and branching ratio upper limits of 6 × 10 −5 at 90% C.L. have been obtained for masses of the gauge boson lying between ∼65 MeV and 125 MeV ( π 0 decay), and 6 × 10 −5 at 90% C.L. for X masses between ∼200 MeV and 525 MeV (η decay). The π 0 -decay limit represents a factor of 4 to 8 improvement when compared to the existing limit, whereas the η decay limit has been measured for the first time, thereby extending the m x range from 130 MeV up to 525 MeV.

These final states with negative C-parity are dominated by φ and K0∗ resonances. The ratios of the branching ratios are B(pp→φπ0)B(pp→φη)=8.3±2.1 and B(pp→K0K0∗+K0K0∗→KL0KS0π0)B(pp→φπ0→KL0KS0π0)= 2.04±0.21.

Abstract: Radiative p p annihilation at rest into γγ , γπ 0 , γη , γω and γη′ has been measured with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR for antiprotons stopped in liquid hydrogen. The branching ratios are B γπ 0 =(44±4)×10 −6 , B γη =(9.3±1.4)×10 −6 and B γω =(68±18)×10 −6 , respectively. For B γγ and B γη ′ we find new upper limits of 0.63×10 −6 and 12×10 −6 (95% CL), respectively.

Abstract: Branching ratios for antiproton-proton annihilations at rest into two mesons are given. The data were obtained at LEAR by stopping antiprotons in a liquid hydrogen target. Both charged and neutral annihilation products were detected in the Crystal Barrel detector. Representative data are presented, and their bearing on the general picture of annihilation dynamics is discussed. In addition, preliminary branching ratios for two-body radiative annihilations are given.

Abstract: The Crystal Barrel Detector has been in operation since October 1989. Results on the analysis of the annihilation of protonium at rest into three pseudoscalars is presented. The π 0 π 0 π 0 final state confirms the existence of ƒ 2 (1520)→π 0 π 0 . In the ηη system of the π 0 ηη final state an isoscalar J PC = 0 ++ resonance with a mass of 1560 MeV/c 2 and a width of 245 MeV/c 2 is observed. The identification with ƒ 0 (1590) is doubtful since the ηη' decay is not observed with the corresponding strength. Our analysis yields an upper limit for the relative branching ratio BR(ƒ 0 (1560)→ηη') BR(ƒ 0 (1560)→ηη) .

Abstract: We discuss φ production in p p annihilation at rest from the Asterix and Crystal Barrel experiments and compare the branching ratios to similar final states without strangeness. The ωπ 0 φπ 0 production ratio is unexpectedly low. In the search for new states, the φπ0 mass spectrum shows no evidence for a resonance in the 1450 MeV/c2 mass range but the K☆K0π0 Dalitz plot shows interesting structure.

Abstract: The annihilation p p →π 0 π 0 was measured for antiprotons stopped in liquid hydrogen (LH2). This reaction is only allowed from odd angular momentum states of the p p - atom . The resulting branching ratio BR ( p p →π 0 π 0 ) LH 2 =(6.93±0.22 stat ±0.37 syst )×10 −4 , combined with a previous measurement of the branching ratio BR ( p p →π + π − ) 2 P in gas from the 2P-state of p p suggests a fraction of P-wave annihilation in LH2 of (28.8±3.5)%, much larger than the values obtained from other annihilation channels. A method of reconciling the contradictory results is discussed.

Abstract: We have determined ratios of branching ratios for p p annihilations at rest into π0η and π0η′, into ηη and ηη′, and into ωη and ωη′. All reactins are observed in two different all-neutral final states. The ratios permit a determination of the pseudoscalar mixing angle. We find ΘPS = −(17.3±1.8)°.

Abstract: The reactione + e - →e + e - ηπ0π0→e + e - 6γ has been analysed using the full data sample taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY. The ηπ0π0 invariant mass spectrum is dominated by the η', for which we determine the radiative width Γγγ(η') to be (4.5±0.3±0.5)keV. Near 1.9 GeV/c2 we observe a second enhancement in the ηπ0π0 mass distribution. Assuming that these events are created by the production and subsequent decay of a wide resonanceX(1900), we have investigated the decay modes, the invariant mass distributions of the ηπ0 and π0π0 subsystems and the angular distributions of the final state mesons. We find that the data is best described byJ PC=2∓. For thisJ P assignment the resonance parameters are Γγγ(X) BR(X→ηππ)=(0.95±0.27±0.20) keV Γtot (X)=(221±92±44)MeV, andM(X)=(1881±32±40) MeV/c2.

Abstract: The Crystal Ball detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY has been used to measure the branching ratios for the decay modes τ ± →h ± π 0 ν and τ ± →h ± π 0 π 0 ν , where h ± is any charged hadron. The results are BR( τ ± → h ± π 0 ν ) = (22.0±0.8±1.9)%, BR( τ ± → h ± π 0 π 0 ν ) = (5.7±0.5 +1.0 −1.7 )%. The first result is in good agreement with the present world average. The decay mode h ± π 0 π 0 ν is reconstructed in τ decays for the first time. Its branching ratio, however, is somewhat lower than the corresponding world average, and therefore tends to increase the one-prong problem.

Abstract: The Crystal Ball detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II has been used to analyze exclusive semileptonic decays ofB mesons produced at γ(4S) energies. The decayB→evD* has been observed with a branching ratio of (7.0±1.8±1.4)% using theπ°D decay mode of theD*. In addition we have searched for the exclusive semileptonic decayB±→e±vπ0. We find an upper limit onB±→e±vπ0 of 0.22% at the 90% CL.

Abstract: We have searched for axion and light Higgs boson production in the channel ϒ (1 S ) → (a 0 or h 0 ) + γ , where the non-interacting axion a 0 and the Higgs boson h 0 do not decay in the detector. We find no evidence for an axion and give an upper limit, Br( ϒ (1S) → a 0 γ ) −5 (90% CL), for long-lived axions. Combining our limit with the previous search in J / ψ decays, we are able to rule out the axion in the standard model with first order QCD corrections. Abstract: The reaction ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ has been analyzed using 97 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data taken with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{+}$ storage ring DORIS II at beam energies around 5.3 GeV. For the first time we have measured the cross section for $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ mvariant masses ranging from threshold to about 2 GeV. We measure an approximately flat cross section of about 10 nb for $W={m}_{{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}}l0.8$ GeV, which is below 0.6 GeV, in good agreement with a theoretical prediction based on an unitarized Born-term model. At higher invariant masses we observe formation of the ${f}_{2}(1270)$ resonance and a hint of the ${f}_{0}(975)$. We deduce the following two-photon widths: ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}({f}_{2}(1270))=3.19\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.16\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}_{0.28}^{0.29}$ keV and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}({f}_{0}(975))l0.53$ keV at 90% C.L. The decay-angular distributions show the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ system to be dominantly spin 0 for $Wl0.7$ GeV and spin 2, helicity 2 in the ${f}_{2}(1270)$ region, with helicity 0 contributing at most 22% (90% C.L.).

Abstract: Endoscopic extraperitoneal herniorrhaphy (EEPH) was utilized to repair 326 groin hernias in 249 patients over a 32-month period. Nearly one in ten of the repairs was for a recurrent hernia. Several patients had contralateral hernias diagnosed only at the time of endoscopic examination. A recurrence rate of 1.6% and an overall complication rate of 5.2% are cited. After a plateau was reached on the surgeon's learning curve, various modifications in technique were implemented. Through these modifications, EEPH has become a safe, efficient, and standardized operation that can be performed with decreasing costs to the hospital and with increasing advantages to the patient.

Abstract: Increasing experience among surgeons and a proliferation of endoscopic instrumentation have allowed a greater number of intraabdominal organs to be approached laparoscopically. Procedures once delegated to standard open technique are now attempted laparoscopically with increasing success. The following case report describes the laparoscopic removal of a large segment IV liver tumor. A review of the literature shows this to be one of the most complex hepatic lesions to be removed laparoscopically to date.

Abstract: Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (CBDE) was performed in 24 patients over a 23-month period. Fourteen of these patients were suspected preoperatively of harboring common bile duct (CBD) calculi. Of these, endoscopic sphincterotomy was unsuccessful in eight. Laparoscopic CBDE was performed either transcystically or via a choledochotomy. In all cases, completion cholangiography demonstrated that the CBD was free of stones. All patients were sent home with drains placed in their extrahepatic biliary system. Mean hospital stay was 2.7 days. There was no mortality. The overall morbidity rate was 29.1%. It included one trocar site infection (4.1%), four cases of mild postoperative amylasemia (16.6%), and two cases of retained stones (8.3%) seen in two patients on follow-up tube cholangiography that were successfully extracted percutaneously. The authors feel that laparoscopic CBDE is a safe and effective method of CBD stone removal that offers an alternative to preoperative ERCP and sphincterotomy.

Abstract: We present the case of a 70-year-old female successfully treated for a bleeding Dieulafoy's gastric lesion with a combined laparoscopic/endoscopic approach. An increasing percentage of surgery is now being performed laparoscopically and the authors feel that combined laparoscopic/endoscopic surgery offers advantages to the patient over either of these methods individually and over open surgery. This report demonstrates that a bleeding point anywhere on the gastric wall is amenable to laparoscopic intervention if the localization techniques we describe are utilized.

Abstract: This paper presents a scan path design to ease the controllability and observability of self-timed logic. The scan path registers operate in asynchronous mode during operation and test. Therefore, no synchronous test clock is necessary during the test mode. New test control modules provide the control sequences to switch between the parallel data path and the serial scan path. In addition to the data path, the control path and the bundled data interface is integrated into the test concept. The new scan path register has been developed with low area overhead and a small additional delay in the critical data path. An example is used to verify this DFT modules for the data and the control path. It demonstrates the functionality during test and operational mode and the compact realization of the asynchronous scan register.

Abstract: There is a certain amount of controversy regarding the need to divide the short gastric vessels (SGV) in laparoscopic fundoplication for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In addition, there is often difficulty in identifying the crural fibers when encircling the lower esophagus.We determine whether it is necessary to divide the SGV by trying to appose the gastric fundus to the anterior abdominal wall intraoperatively. If this could be done easily, the SGV are preserved. When their division is required, a posterior gastric approach is employed. We have also found that the injection of methylene blue into the left crural fibers anterior to the esophagus is helpful in identifying the left side when dissection posterior to the gastroesophageal junction is difficult.Between 1992 and 1995 we performed 20 laparoscopic fundoplications for GERD. All patients had at least grade 3 esophagitis (Savary-Miller scale), increased esophageal exposure to acid (median DeMeester score of 195), and decreased lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure. The median operative time was 175 min. There were no conversions to open surgery, and there was no mortality. Three patients developed transient postoperative dysphagia and one patient had pneumonia. The median hospital stay was 3 days; all patients were free of reflux symptoms at follow-up ranging from 7 to 42 months.We conclude that the techniques described by us aid in intraoperative decision making and allow laparoscopic fundoplication to be both simple and effective.

Abstract: The role of endoscopic extraperitoneal herniorrhaphy (EEPH) in the management of giant scrotal hernias has not been well defined, and the technical details relating to operations on such hernias have not been described. We present our experience with 17 patients undergoing repair of giant scrotal hernias. Foley catheter bladder decompression was routinely employed. The Retzius space was developed early in the procedure and hernia sac contents were reduced in all cases. The inferior epigastric vessels were likewise divided in all patients. The average operative time was 76 min and all patients were discharged home the same day. There have been no recurrences on follow-up. There was no mortality, and morbidity was limited to seroma formation in two patients. We conclude that with certain technical modifications, EEPH can be safely employed for the treatment of giant scrotal hernias.
