Abstract

Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. I will conclude the talk presenting the first scientific results obtained by the LST-1, the prototype of one CTAO telescope type - the Large-Sized Telescope, that is currently under commission., PoS: Proceedings of Science, 395, ISSN:1824-8039, Proceedings of 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2021)

Nevertheless, their readout elements has not evolved much: tungsten, sometimes gold-plated or aluminum, wires. By taking advantage of the developments in the manufacture of conducting carbon fiber, we could obtain interesting improvements for wire detectors. In this article, we present recent tests and simulations using carbon fibers to readout signal in place of traditional tungsten wires. Unlike metallic wires, their low weight guaranties a reduced quantity of material in the active area.

This paper discusses the quality and performance of currently available PbWO$_4$ crystals of relevance to high-resolution electromagnetic calorimetry, e.g. detectors for the Neutral Particle Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab or those planned for the Electron-Ion Collider. Abstract

International audience; A bismuth-germanate (BGO) escape-suppression shield for the high-purity germanium triple-cluster detector of the MINIBALL $ \gamma$ -ray spectrometer was designed and built. Monte Carlo simulations with the simulation code GEANT4 were performed to guide the construction and to determine the detector geometry of the new BGO shield. After the first measurements concerning mechanical properties of the BGO housing and the performance of the photomultiplier tubes at the Institut de Physique Nucléaire, Orsay, the prototype BGO escape-suppression shield was combined with a MINIBALL triple-cluster detector at the Institut für Kernphysik, Cologne. A dedicated electronics and digital data-acquisition system was put into operation in order to determine timing properties of the combined coincidence measurement and to measure values for the energy resolution of the BGO detectors, for the BGO low-energy threshold, and for the crucial peak-to-total ratio (P/T). The measured P/T value for a standard$^{60}$Co $ \gamma$ -ray source compares well with expectations and will allow to proceed with the amendment of the MINIBALL triple-cluster detectors with an escape-suppression shield for improved in-beam $ \gamma$ -ray spectroscopy especially at the new HIE-ISOLDE accelerator for radioactive ion beams at CERN.

Abstract

International audience; Avalanche fluctuations set a limit to the energy and position resolutions that can be reached by gaseous detectors. This paper presents a method based on a laser test-bench to measure the absolute gain and the relative gain variance of a Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector from its single-electron response. A Micromegas detector was operated with three binary gas mixtures, composed of 5% isobutane as a quencher, with argon, neon or helium, at atmospheric pressure. The anode signals were read out by low-noise, high-gain Cremat CR-110 charge preamplifiers to enable single-electron detection down to gain of 5× 103 for the first time. The argon mixture shows the lowest gain at a given amplification field together with the lowest breakdown limit, which is at a gain of 2×104 an order of magnitude lower than that of neon or helium. For each gas, the relative gain variance f is almost unchanged in the range of amplification field studied. It was found that f is twice higher (f~0.6) in argon than in the two other mixtures. This hierarchy of gain and relative gain variance agrees with predictions of analytic models, based on gas ionisation yields, and a Monte-Carlo model included in the simulation software Magboltz version 10.1.

International audience; The Central Neutron Detector, a recently constructed scintillator barrel which is used in CLAS12 at Jefferson Lab to detect 0.2–1 GeV neutrons at backwards angles, is here described. The motivations and R&D; tests leading to its final design, based on three radial layers of coupled paddles with one-side light readout by photomultipliers plus “U-turn” lightguides on the other side, are outlined. The performance of the detector, evaluated from cosmic-ray tests and simulations, which satisfies the physics requirements, is reported.

Abstract

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory consists of 1660 water-Cherenkov detector stations (WCDs) that sample the charged particles and photons of air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. Each station continuously samples signals from photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) viewing the water volume, and records a approximately 20 micro-second trace whenever a local trigger condition is satisfied. Absolute timing is provided by a GPS receiver on each station, and power is provided by a solar power system. The Observatory is currently implementing an upgrade, "AugerPrime". AugerPrime includes the addition of a small PMT to increase dynamic range, a plastic scintillator above each WCD to enhance the separation of electromagnetic and muon shower components, a radio detector to measure the radio emission of inclined air showers, and an infill of buried muon counters to provide additional cross checks. Consequently, new electronics to support these additional detectors is also being implemented. In addition to more measurement channels, the new electronics includes improved GPS receivers, higher sampling frequency, increased dynamic range, increased processing capability, and improved calibration and monitoring systems. This paper presents the design of the new electronics and discusses performance characteristics observed in laboratory measurements and engineering array data.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, a front-end electronics based on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is presented for the future imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). To achieve this purpose, a 16-channel ASIC chip, PARISROC 2 (Photomultiplier ARray Integrated in SiGe ReadOut Chip) is used in the analog signal processing and digitization. The digitized results are sent to the server by a user-defined User Datagram Protocol/Internet Protocol (UDP/IP) hardcore engine through Ethernet that is managed by a FPGA. A prototype electronics fulfilling the requirements of the Wide Field of View Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) project has been designed, fabricated and tested to prove the concept of the design. A detailed description of the development with the results of the test measurements are presented. By using a new input structure and a new configuration of the ASIC, the dynamic range of the circuit is extended. A highly precise-time calibrating algorithm is also proposed, verified and optimized for the mass production. The test results suggest that the proposed electronics design fulfills the general specification of the future IACTs.

Abstract

Design, tests and production methods of the photomultiplier bases for the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory are presented. The voltage divider is a purely resistive chain including a low consumption high voltage power supply. Two different output sensitivities have been obtained by using the anode and the last amplified dynode outputs. The charge ratio between the anode and the amplified dynode is around 32. The design ensures the stability of the gain and of the base line for events made of several pulses over a long time duration (up to 20 μs) and a total charge ranging from a few to 6×10 5 photoelectrons (typical value: a few thousands) with a peak photocathode current of up to 200 nA. The pre-production, test and mounting on photomultipliers of 200 bases has been carried out. The total production is 5000 pieces.

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Research and Development Array (RDA) was originally designed to be the precursor of the northern Auger observatory, a hybrid array of 4400 surface detector stations and 39 fluorescence telescopes deployed over 20,000 square kilometers. It is conceived as a test bed aiming at validating an improved and more cost-effective 1-PMT surface detector design and a new peer-to-peer communication system. The array of ten surface detector stations and ten communication-only stations is currently being deployed in southeastern Colorado and will be operated at least until late 2013. It is configured in such a way that it allows testing of a new peer-to-peer communication protocol, as well as a new surface detector electronics design with a larger dynamic range aiming at reducing the distance from the shower core where saturation is observed. All these developments are expected in the short term to improve the performance of the Pierre Auger Observatory and enable future enhancements. In the longer term, it is hoped that some of these new developments may contribute to the design of a next-generation giant ground array.

Abstract

The next generation of proton decay and neutrino experiments, the post-SuperKamiokande detectors as those that will take place in megaton size water tanks, will require very large surfaces of photodetection and a large volume of data. Even with large hemispherical photomultiplier tubes, the expected number of channels should reach hundreds of thousands. A funded R&D program to implement a solution is presented here. The very large surface of photodetection is segmented in macro pixels made of 16 hemispherical (12 inches) photomultiplier tubes connected to an autonomous front-end which works on a triggerless data acquisition mode. The expected data transmission rate is 5 Mb/s per cable, which can be achieved with existing techniques. This architecture allows to reduce considerably the cost and facilitate the industrialization. This document presents the simulations and measurements which define the requirements for the photomultipliers and the electronics. A proto-type of front-end electronics was successfully tested with 16 photomultiplier tubes supplied by a single high voltage, validating the built-in gain adjustment and the calibration principle. Abstract

International audience; This document presents a study on an improved bi-alkali photocathode used on large hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The process has been applied on a sample of the Photonis XP1805, the 9 in. PMT used in the Pierre Auger Observatory experiment and compared to a sample of the standard production ones. Measurements of the photocathode sensitivity, the spectral response and the relative detection efficiency were performed on the samples of standard and improved PMTs to characterise this new photocathode process. Current measurements of the photocathode sensitivity show a mean improvement of around 19% at 400 nm. Comparative pulse measurements of the relative detection efficiency confirmed this result. Additional measurements were performed in order to determine if the new process could have secondary effects. The noise rate decay time after exposure lasts to a few tenths of hours. The dark count rate is more sensitive to temperature but remains lower than 10 kHz at 15 °C. The afterpulse probability is increased but remains very low with the type of tube used in this study.

Even with large hemispherical photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the expected number of channels should reach hundreds of thousands. An ANR funded R&D program to implement a solution is presented here. The very large surface of photo-detection is segmented in macro pixels consisting of an array (2 × 2 m2) of 16 hemispherical 12-inch PMTs connected to autonomous underwater front-end electronics working in a triggerless data acquisition mode. The array is powered by a common high voltage and only one data cable allows the connection by network to the surface controller. This architecture allows a considerable reduction of the cost and facilitates the industrialization. This paper presents the complete architecture of the prototype system and tests results with 16 8-inch PMTs, validating the whole electronics, the built-in gain adjustment and the calibration principle.

La methode d'hemagglutination passive est une technique simple, rapide, sensible et specifique permettant d'evaluer en 20 minutes l'etat immunitaire d'un patient et de determiner objectivement une conduite prophylactique. La possibilite d'une application systematique du titrage de l'antitoxine dans les services d'accueil des hopitaux merite d'etre etudiee.

Abstract

Background: Of the estimated 10 million people affected by (TB) each year, one-third are never diagnosed. Delayed case detection within the private healthcare sector has been identified as a particular problem in some settings, leading to considerable morbidity, mortality and community transmission. Using unannounced standardised patient (SP) visits to the pharmacies, we aimed to evaluate the performance of private pharmacies in the detection and treatment of TB., Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken at randomly selected private pharmacies within 40 districts of Vietnam. Trained actors implemented two standardised clinical scenarios of presumptive TB and presumptive multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). Outcomes were the proportion of SPs referred for medical assessment and the proportion inappropriately receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics. Logistic regression evaluated predictors of SPs' referral., Results: In total, 638 SP encounters were conducted, of which only 155 (24.3%) were referred for medical assessment; 511 (80·1%) were inappropriately offered antibiotics. A higher proportion of SPs were referred without having been given antibiotics if they had presumptive MDR-TB (68/320, 21.3%) versus presumptive TB (17/318, 5.3%; adjusted OR=4.8, 95% CI 2.9 to 7.8). Pharmacies offered antibiotics without a prescription to 89.9% of SPs with presumptive TB and 70.3% with presumptive MDR-TB, with no clear follow-up plan., Conclusions: Few SPs with presumptive TB were appropriately referred for medical assessment by private pharmacies.
