1. Legal protection of plant biotechnological inventions

Abstract

Within biotechnology, plant production is regarded as one of the most promising adaptations. New plant breeding methods are considered to better fulfil the requirements set on patentability than the traditional breeding methods. In Europe, a plant variety can be protected by special legislation. The present patent laws in Europe are not applied to plant biotechnological inventions. The United States has three systems under which new varieties of plants may be protected. These include The 1930 Plant Patent Act, The 1970 Plant Variety Protection Act and The 1952 Patent Statute. Companies that have specialized in plant breeding and organizations representing the industrial countries recommend improvements to the legal protection. On the other hand, farmers and the developing countries are against better protection.

Abstract

The N-terminal P1 proteinase of potato virus Y (ordinary strain group isolate PVY-O) was expressed in E. coli. Antiserum was raised against the expressed protein and used to detect the viral proteins in infected tobacco leaf tissue by Western blotting and by electron microscopy with immunogold labelling. In the immunogold localization studies P1 protein was detected in association with the cytoplasmic inclusion bodies characteristic of PVY infections and in the cytoplasm of the infected plant cells. No significant P1 antibody binding with other plant cell organelles, or with the cell wall and plasmodesmata, was detected by immunogold labelling.

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the plant researcher with little or no experience of DNA sequencing to a technology central to many molecular biology projects. DNA sequencing technology continues to develop at a rapid rate, and refinements to methods are reported almost daily, largely in response to the demands of ambitious projects aiming to sequence the complete genome of organisms as diverse as man, yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), plants (Arabidopsis) and nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans). It is beyond the scope of this chapter to provide a comprehensive review of every new development, but by using the protocols provided, good-quality sequence should be obtained routinely. An increasing number of laboratories have access to automated sequencing facilities. However, for many small laboratories, and those in which molecular biology is a new venture, manual methods of DNA sequencing will continue to be required. It is at plant molecular biologists working in these laboratories that this chapter is aimed.
