1. Nano-resolution sensors for disaster warning systems

Abstract: New high-resolution sensing technology has been developed for oceanic, seismic, and atmospheric measurements. Depth sensors, accelerometers, and barometers employing forcesensitive resonant quartz crystals have demonstrated their effectiveness in measuring tsunamis, earthquakes, and infrasound signals with a sensitivity of parts-per-billion. The nano-resolution depth sensors offer an improved ability to separate earthquake vibrations and other oceanic noise from tsunami waveforms. Seismic signals can be measured with new strong motion sensors to a few nano-g's. Atmospheric infrasound signals can be measured to a small fraction of a milli-Pascal. Geophysical measurements can now be made with unprecedented clarity from beneath the seafloor, to the ocean bottom, through the water column, and through the atmosphere in a single coherent array. Nano-resolution sensors will improve the identification and prediction of the magnitude, location and path of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and severe weather with increased warning times. Examples are given of Sea-Air-Land Tomography and seismic, oceanic, and infrasound measurements of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Abstract: Recent advances in deep-ocean tsunami measurement technology coupled with tsunami forecast models have reliably demonstrated that tsunami impact can be predicted before the tsunami reaches the affected coastlines. These forecast models are based on observations that are typically 1000 km or more from the earthquake epicenter. The major challenge today is to forecast tsunamis in the near field where the tsunami wave is often overwhelmed by the seismic event. Nano-resolution pressure sensors have the necessary resolution to distinguish between tsunami and seismic signals and ocean noise in the near field. This study describes the results of a 17 month experiment that was initiated on June 30, 2010, at the Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) cabled observatory in Monterey Bay, California. The experiment compared a conventional pressure sensor and a nano-resolution pressure sensor at a depth of approximately 900 m. The results presented include examples of near- and far-field earthquakes and micro-tsunamis that were detected by the nano-resolution pressure sensor. Through wavelet analysis several micro-tsunamis were identified. The paper also describes additional testing planned by NOAA on the nano-resolution pressure sensors for potential application to the NOAA DART System.

3. Breakthrough underwater technology holds promise for improved local tsunami warnings

Abstract: Recent advances in deep-ocean tsunami measurement technology coupled with tsunami forecast models have demonstrated that tsunami impact can be predicted before the tsunami reaches the affected coastlines. Since 2004, tsunami impacts have been predicted for 33 tsunamis detected in the deep-ocean with about 80% accuracy when observations and predictions at tide gauges are compared. In most of these tsunamis, the forecast was based on observations typically 1000km or more from the earthquake epicenter. A remaining challenge is to forecast tsunamis in the near field where the tsunami signal may be overwhelmed by the earthquake vibrations. A new generation of pressure sensors, named nano-resolution pressure sensors, can provide high temporal resolution of the earthquake and tsunami signals without losing precision. The nano-resolution pressure sensor offers a state-of-the-science ability to separate earthquake vibrations and other oceanic noise from tsunami waveforms, paving the way for accurate, early warnings of local tsunamis. This study describes an experiment, begun on June 30, 2010 at the Monterey Accelerated Research System (MARS) cabled observatory in Monterey, California, comparing conventional pressure sensors with the nano-resolution sensor at a depth of approximately 900m. The study will include examples of earthquakes, both local and remote, detected by the nano-resolution pressure sensor since its deployment. Wavelet analysis has been employed to identify two remote micro-tsunamis in late 2010. The events (Dec. 21, M7.4 at Bonin Island; Dec. 25, M7.3 near Vanuatu) produced tsunami signals of 1-2 mm in amplitude in Monterey Bay at periods near 14 minutes.

Abstract: The analogous process to quark pair production in e{sup +} e{sup {minus}} annihilation is the hard-scattering quark exchange process in {gamma}{gamma} interactions. This hard-scattering process is expected to dominate the cross section at high transverse momenta of the produced quarks. Experimentally, one has looked for this process in two-jet as well as inclusive particle production and has found a relatively low PT onset of hard scattering in {gamma}{gamma} interactions. This report examines the issue in more detail (high statistics) for charged particle inclusive production and checks if the heavier flavors display a similar behavior in inclusive K{sup 0} production.

Abstract: We have searched for the reaction e+e-, where f is either an electron, muon, or charged pion, at s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC PEP storage ring. One candidate event is found while 2.3 events are expected from known processes. We would expect to see 11 events if the cross section for e+e- at s=29 GeV were enhanced by the factor of 4.7 which the ALEPH Collaboration reports for s=91 GeV. We also look for e+e- and e+e-, and for e+e-, using a similar analysis procedure, and see the number of events predicted by the standard model. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We have tested QED to fourth order in the coupling constant {alpha} in the large-{ital Q}{sup 2} region by studying four-lepton final states in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} interactions with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP ({radical}{ital s} =29 GeV). All four final-state particles were detected at large angles with respect to the beam axis. For an integrated luminosity of 205 pb{sup {minus}1}, we observed ten {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{ital e+}{ital e}{sup {minus}}, ten {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, and one {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} events with opposite-charge pair masses greater than 1 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. These events show good agreement with the complete {alpha}{sup 4} QED calculation.

Abstract: We have searched for a heavy charged lepton with an associated neutrino of nearly the same mass in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation data taken with the Mark II detector at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. In order to suppress contamination from conventional two-photon reactions, this analysis uses a novel, radiative-tagging technique. Requiring the presence of an isolated, energetic photon allows a search for lepton doublets with mass splittings smaller than that previously accessible to experiment. No evidence for such a new lepton doublet has been found, enabling limits to be placed on allowed mass combinations. Mass splittings as low as 250--400 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} are excluded for charged-lepton masses between 500 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and 10 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}.

Abstract: The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

Abstract: Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e + e − annihilation at √ s =29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b (b) quark decays to a positive (negative) lepton to be 0.17 −0.08 +0.15 , with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38.

Abstract: A study of the muon decay channel of the τ lepton with the presence of a photon has been carried out to verify theoretical predictions for the production rate of e + e - → τ + τ - γ and for the branching ratio of τ - → ν τ µ - ν µ γ. Included in this study is the first direct measurement of radiative tau decay. Using e + e - annihilation data taken at 29 GeV center-of-mass energy with the Mark II detector, we find the ratio of the measured τ - → ν τ µ - ν µ γ branching fraction to the expected value from QED to be 1.03 ± 0.42. The ratio of measured-to-predicted number of events from radiative T production, e + e - → τ + τ - γ, where one of the τ's decay to μνν is found to be 0.91 ± 0.20. We have not seen an indication of anomalous behavior in radiative tau events.

Abstract: Data taken by the Mark II detector at the SLAC {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} storage ring PEP was used to search for exclusive decays of {ital D}{sup {plus minus}} and {ital B}{sup {plus minus}} mesons into two charged leptons plus a charged pion or kaon. All possible charge and lepton combinations consistent with charge conservation were considered and no evidence for any signals was found. We obtain upper limits for the various branching ratios ranging from 2.5{times}10{sup {minus}3} to 9.2{times}10{sup {minus}3}, at a 90% confidence level. Some of these limits can be used to constrain leptoquark masses in various models.

Abstract: We present a new high-statistics measurement of the cross section for the process {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV for invariant pion-pair masses {ital M}({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}) between 350 MeV/{ital c}{sup 2} and 1.6 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. We observe the {ital f}{sub 2}(1270) and measure its radiative width to be 3.15{plus minus}0.04{plus minus}0.39 keV. We also observe an enhancement in the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} spectrum near 1 GeV. General agreement is found with unitarized models of the {gamma}{gamma}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} reaction that include final-state interactions.

Abstract: We have measured the K/sup 0/+K /sup 0/ inclusive cross section in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV with the Mark II detector SLAC PEP. We find 1.27 +- 0.03 +- 0.15 K/sup 0/+K /sup 0/ per hadronic event. We have also used time-of-flight particle identification to measure the K/sup + -/ rate over the momentum range 300--900 MeV/c.

Abstract: The decay modes with multiple neutral mesons in the final states have been studied with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The branching ratio for the decay mode - 20 is found to be consistent with the theoretical expectation. Abstract: We have studied several features of the production of charged-hadron pairs by ..gamma gamma.. collisions. We have measured the f/sup 0/ partial width GAMMA/sub f//sup 0/..--> gamma gamma..(Q/sup 2/) for Q/sup 2/ in the range 0 gamma gamma.. = 2.52 +- 0.13 +- 0.38 keV at Q/sup 2/roughly-equal0. The measured Q/sup 2/ dependence is in agreement with the generalized vector-dominance model. The cross section for ..gamma gamma -->..(..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/+K/sup +/K/sup -/) in the mass region 1.6< or =M/sub pipi/< or =2.5 GeV/c/sup 2/ has also been measured and the result compared with that expected from the QCD continuum.

Abstract: This paper presents a study of events produced in 29-GeV electron-positron annihilation in which there are just two noncollinear charged particles, no detected photons, and two or more undetected particles. These events can be explained by attributing them primarily to the reactions e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/e/sup +/e/sup -/ and e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ where just two particles appear in the Mark II detector. There is no evidence for unconventional sources for such events.

Abstract: We present results on c+ production in 29-GeV e+e- annihilation. The c+ are observed via their semileptonic decays to e+X and +X. With radiative corrections, we find (e+e-c+X)Bc+eX)= 1.5±0.6±0.5 pb or 0.0038±0.0015±0.0012 c+e+X decay per hadronic event, and (e+e-c+X)B(c+X)= 1.4±1.4±0.4 pb or 0.0035±0.0035±0. 0011 c++X decay per hadronic event. These results can be used to place constraints on the predictions of various production models. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The process e/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..e/sup +/e/sup -/..gamma..(..gamma..), where one electron scatters at a small angle, is studied with data from the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The data are in excellent agreement with a Monte Carlo calculation and include a large contribution from order ..cap alpha../sup 4/. The ratio of measured to calculated cross sections is R = 0.993 +- 0.017 +- 0.015, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. This is a sensitive test of the calculation of the dominant background for neutrino-counting experiments.

Abstract: We have used a high-resolution drift chamber in the Mark II detector at the SLAC e+e- storage ring PEP to measure the lifetimes of the D0 and D+ mesons produced in e+e- annihilations at 29 GeV. Based on a sample of 74 decays for the D0 mesons and 23 decays for the D+ mesons, the lifetimes are found to be &=(4.7-0.8+0.9) 0.5×10-13 sec and &=(8.9-2.7+3.8) 1.3×10-13 sec. Abstract: We report a search for long-lived heavy neutrinos produced by the neutral weak current in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Data from the Mark II detector are examined for evidence of events with one or more separated vertices in the radial range of 2 mm to 10 cm. No events were found that were consistent with the search hypothesis, ruling out heavy neutrinos with mean decay lengths of 1 to 20 cm in the mass range 1 to 13 GeV/c2. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We observe both the J/sup P//sup C/ = 1/sup + +/ f/sub 1/(1285) and the J/sup P//sup C/ = 0/sup - +/ eta'(958) in tagged two-photon interactions and the eta'(958) in untagged interactions. The measured Q/sup 2/ dependence and decay distribution support the f/sub 1/(1285) spin and parity assignment. The radiative width of the f/sub 1/(1285) is measured as (M/sup 2//Q/sup 2/)GAMMA/sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma..//sub */ = 9.4 +- 2.5 +- 1.7 keV, on the assumption of a rho-pole form factor.

Abstract: The branching fraction for tau/sup -/..-->..5..pi../sup + -/(..pi../sup 0/)..nu../sub tau/ is measured from data accumulated with the Mark II detector at PEP. Four events are observed with an estimated hadronic background of (0.03/sub -0.02//sup +0.04/) events and a background from tau/sup -/..-->..e..pi../sup + -/..pi../sup 0/..nu../sub tau/ of (0.05/sub -0.04//sup +0.07/) events. This results in a measured branching fraction of (0.16 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)%. The candidate events are used to establish an upper limit of 125 MeV/c/sup 2/ on the ..nu../sub tau/ mass at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: The MARK II detector is used to study the Bose-Einstein correlation between pairs and triplets of charged pions produced in hadronic decays of the J)psi), the ..sqrt..s = 4 to 7 GeV continuum above the J)psi), two photon events at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV, and e/sup )plus/)e/sup )minus/) annihilation events at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV as a function of Q/sup 2/, the four-momentum transfer squared. After corrections for Coulomb effects and pion misidentification, we find a nearly full Bose-Einstein enhancement ..cap alpha.. in the J)psi) and the two photon data and about half the maximum value in the other two data sets. The radius parameter )tau)(an average over space and time) given by pion pair analyses lies within a band of +-0.10 fm around 0.73 fm and is the same, within errors, for all four data sets. Pion triplet analyses also give a consistent radius of approx. 0.54 fm. fits to two-dimensional distributions R(q/sub T//sup 2/, q/sub C//sup 2/) of invariant components of Q/sup 2/ = q/sub T//sup 2/ )plus) q/sub C//sup 2/ give )tau)/sub T/ approx. )tau)C approx. )tau), where q/sub T/ is the transverse three-momentum difference calculated with respect to the net pair three-momentum, and q/sub C/ ismore » in effect the longitudinal three-momentum difference in the pion pair rest frame. When q/sub T/ is calculated with respect to the jet axis for two-jet events in the e/sup )plus/)e/sup )minus/) annihilation data at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV, a fit to R(q/sub T//sup 2/, q/sub C//sup 2/) also gives )tau)/sub T/ approx. )tau)/sub C/ approx. )tau). Noting that q/sub L/ and q/sub 0/ are not invariant, we make fits to R(/sub T//sup T/, q/sub L//sup 2/) and to R(q/sub T//sup 2/, q/sub 0//sup 2/) (Kopylov formulation), and we find )tau)/sub 0/ approx. )tau)/sub L/ approx. )23))tau)/sub T/ to )12))tau)/sub T/. 44 refs., 43 figs., 15 tabs« less

Abstract: We use data from the Mark II experiment at PEP to search for the process B→h 0 X for m h 0 between 50 and 210 MeV/ c 2 . No evidence for the Higgs boson is seen in this mass range. The limit obtained rules out the standard Higgs boson for masses between 70 and 210 MeV/ c 2 and significantly constrains extensions of the Higgs sector.

Abstract: We confirm the observation of a spin-1 resonance at 1423 MeV in the K/sub S//sup 0/K/sup +- /..pi../sup minus-or-plus/ system produced in single-tagged two-photon interactions. The Dalitz plot indicates that this resonance decays primarily via a K/sup */K intermediate state. We measure a radiative width times branching ratio B/sub K//sub K-bar//sub ..pi../(M/sup 2//Q/sup 2/)GAMMA/sub ..gamma..//sub ..gamma..//sub */ = 3.2 +- 1.4 +- 0.6 keV on the assumption of a rho-pole form factor.

Abstract: We have studied the energy-energy correlation in e+e- annihilation into hadrons at s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. We find to O(s2) that s=0.1580.0030.008 if hadronization is described by string fragmentation. Independent fragmentation schemes give s=0.100.14, and give poor agreement with the data. A leading-log shower fragmentation model is found to describe the data well. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Inclusive ..cap omega../sup -/ production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV has been measured with the Mark II detector. From an integrated luminosity of 207 pb/sup -1/, we determine a production rate of 0.014 +- 0.006 +- 0.004 ..cap omega../sup -/,Omega-bar/sup +/ per hadronic event. This is roughly 35 times the Lund-model prediction of 0.0004 ..cap omega../sup -/,Omega-bar/sup +/ per hadronic event, but comparable to the Webber-model prediction of 0.006 ..cap omega../sup -/,Omega-bar/sup +/ per hadronic event. The large rate of ..cap omega../sup -/ production, compared with production rates for other baryons, and with theoretical predictions based on diquark models, indicates that spin suppression does not hold for ..cap omega../sup -/ production.

Abstract: We have made a detailed comparison of the charged-particle flow in three-jet events (e+e-qq»g) and radiative two-jet events (e+e-qq») from e+e- annihilation at Ec.m.=29 GeV. Accurate comparisons can be made because these two event types have similar topologies. In the angular region between the quark and antiquark jets, we observe substantially fewer charged tracks in the two-jet events than in the radiative three-jet events. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Multihadronic e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation events at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been studied with both the original (PEP 5) Mark II and the upgraded Mark II detectors. Detector-corrected distributions from global shape analyses such as aplanarity, Q/sub 2/-Q/sub 1/, sphericity, thrust, minor value, oblateness, and jet masses, and inclusive charged-particle distributions including x, rapidity, p/sub perpendicular/, and particle flow are presented. These distributions are compared with predictions from various multihadron event models which use leading-logarithmic shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level and string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization. The new generation of parton-shower models gives, on the average, a better description of the data than the previous parton-shower models. The energy behavior of these models is compared to existing e/sup +/e/sup -/ data. The predictions of the models at a center-of-mass energy of 93 GeV, roughly the expected mass of the Z/sup 0/, are also presented.

Abstract: A measurement of jet energy spread in the reaction e+e− → hadrons is presented. Using a jet calculus model for the jet development we determine the variation of the strong coupling constant with respect to momentum transfer. The observed variation is consistent with that expected for QCD over a wide range of momentum transfers. This method alone is not sufficient to distinguish QCD from simple limited transverse momentum models.

Abstract: A search for single electrons from the decay of singly produced scalar electrons has been made at the PEP storage ring at SLAC. No events of this type have been found in 123 pb-1 of data, resulting in a cross-section limit of less than 2.4×10-2 pb within the detector acceptance, and a 95%-confidence-level lower limit on the scalar-electron mass of 22.2 GeV/c2. © 1983 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: eta production has been investigated by the Mark II Collaboration at the SLAC e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring PEP. eta particles are reconstructed by their ..gamma gamma.. decay mode. The eta fragmentation function has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Lund-model prediction. eta' production has been measured for the first time in high-energy e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. There is evidence at the 3sigma level for D/sub s//sup +- / decay into eta..pi../sup +/ and eta'..pi../sup +- /.

Abstract: A search has been made for the inclusive production of J ψ (3.1) and Υ{hooked} (9.4) mesons in e+e- interactions at 29 GeV, via their decay into two leptons. No signal is observed in the J ψ region, nor in the Υ{hooked} region. The limits on the cross sections are σ(e+e- → ψX) < 4.4 × 10-36cm2, and σ(e+e- → Υ{hooked}X) < 4.7 × 10-36 cm2. The same data yield limits on the branching ratios for the b quark BR (b → ψX) < 4.9% and BR (b → l+l-X) < 0.8%. © 1983.

Abstract: The differential cross sections for lepton pair production in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV have been measured and found to be in good agreement with the standard model of the electroweak interaction. Abstract: The production of ..lambda.. hyperons in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0213 +- 0.012 +- 0.018..lambda.. or Lambda-bar per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected ..lambda.. decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon number compensation.

Abstract: A modular gas tube calorimeter for the detection of high energy photons has been constructed and tested. The calorimeter is physically segmented into towers and can be configured to match the geometrical constraints of an experiment. Each tower has the anode signals from the gas tubes combined by a resistive network to give the transverse position and width of an electromagnetic shower in addition to its total energy.

We determine that the average probability for a semdeptonlc decay of a hadron lnmally containing a b quark to produce a positive lepton is less than 0 12 at the 90% confidence level and set upper hmlts on B°B ° rmxing. New knowledge of the weak mixing angles, im- posed by the long B lifetime [1,2], a lower bound on the t quark mass [3], and a small ratio [4] of F(b-*u)/ P(b ~ c), has led to predictions that B 0 mesons and, to a much lesser extent, B 0 mesons should exhibit mixing [5,6]. Recently, the CLEO collaboration ,2 has reported an upper limit on B0B 0 mixing from the rate of like.sign dileptons produced in the decay of the T(4s). The UA1 collaboration [8] has observed like-sign dimuon events, leading to speculations in the literature [9] that these events could arise from B s 0 - B - 0 s mixing. In this letter, we report a measurement of dflepton rates in e+e - annihilation at an energy above the B 0 production threshold. Here, we always imply the charge conjugate reaction. We use t h e Particle Data Group convention that B (B) hadrons in t h e absence of mixing decay into positive (negative) lep- tons. The t~pes_of neutral B m e s o n s are denoted by B~ = bd and B~ = bs. The CLEO collaboration has set an upper limit on the di- lepton ratio Y n q = ( N n q n q + N~O=O)/N~O~O = N~±/N +- ~a va~a nd~d ndDd The limit set isYB~ < 0.30 at 90% C L under the assump- tion of equal semileptortic branching ratios. Abstract: We have used an electronic tracking system to measure the lifetime of D0 mesons produced in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV. Based on a sample of 27 events, the lifetime is found to be (4.2-1.0+1.3 1.0) × 10-13 s. © 1984 The American Physical Society.
