Abstract: Abstract The Fourier harmonics, $$v_2$$ v 2 and $$v_3$$ v 3 of negative pions are measured at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ s NN = 17.3 GeV around midrapidity by the CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS in 0–30% central PbAu collisions with a mean centrality of 5.5%. The analysis is performed in two centrality bins as a function of the transverse momentum $$\mathrm {p_{\textrm{T}}}$$ p T from 0.05 GeV/c to more than 2 GeV/c. This is the first measurement of the $$v^{1/3}_{3}/v^{1/2}_{2}$$ v 3 1 / 3 / v 2 1 / 2 ratio as a function of transverse momentum at SPS energies, that reveals, independently of the hydrodynamic models, hydrodynamic behavior of the formed system. For $$\mathrm {p_{\textrm{T}}}$$ p T above 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is nearly flat in accordance with the hydrodynamic prediction and as previously observed by the ATLAS and ALICE experiments at the much higher LHC energies. The results are also compared with the SMASH-vHLLE hybrid model predictions, as well as with the SMASH model applied alone.

Abstract: Differential triangular flow, v 3 ( p T ) , of negative pions is measured at s NN = 17.3 GeV around midrapidity by the CERES/NA45 experiment at CERN in central PbAu collisions in the range 0–30% with a mean centrality of 5.5%. This is the first measurement as a function of transverse momentum of the triangular flow at SPS energies. The p T range extends from about 0.05 GeV/ c to more than 2 GeV/ c . The triangular flow magnitude, corrected for the HBT effects, is smaller by a factor of about 2 than the one measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC and the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Within the analyzed range of central collisions no significant centrality dependence is observed. The data are found to be well described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation combined with an UrQMD cascade model for the late stages.

Abstract: We present results on transverse momentum correlations of charged particle pairs produced in Pb Au collisions at 158 A GeV / c at the Super Proton Synchrotron. The transverse momentum correlations have been studied as a function of collision centrality, angular separation of the particle pairs, transverse momentum and charge sign. We demonstrate that the results are in agreement with previous findings in scale-independent analyses at the same beam energy. Employing the two-particle momentum correlator 〈 Δ p t , i , Δ p t , j 〉 and the cumulative p t variable x ( p t ) , we identify, using the scale-dependent approach presented in this paper, different sources contributing to the measured correlations, such as quantum and Coulomb correlations, elliptic flow and mini-jet fragmentation.

Abstract: We present a measurement of $e^+e^-$ pair production in central Pb-Au collisions at 158$A$ GeV/$c$. As reported earlier, a significant excess of the $e^+e^-$ pair yield over the expectation from hadron decays is observed. The improved mass resolution of the present data set, recorded with the upgraded CERES experiment at the CERN-SPS, allows for a comparison of the data with different theoretical approaches. The data clearly favor a substantial in-medium broadening of the $\rho$ spectral function over a density-dependent shift of the $\rho$ pole mass. The in-medium broadening model implies that baryon induced interactions are the key mechanism to in-medium modifications of the $\rho$-meson in the hot fireball at SPS energy., Comment: Revised version

Abstract: The CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS has previously measurede e pair production in 160 A GeV Pb-Au collisions. In the mass region m 0 2G eV/c 2 , an enhancement of 2 7 0 4(stat.) 0 5(syst.) compared to the expectation from known hadronic decay sources was observed. In the 40 A GeV data taken in 1999, an enhancement is again found; a preliminary anal- ysis gives an even larger value of 5 0 1 3(stat.). The results are compared to theoretical model calculations based on π π annihilation with a modified ρ-propagator; they may be related to chiral symmetry restoration.

Abstract: The E895 Collaboration has investigated a number of mixed-particle correlations involving neutral strange particles (K0s and Λ) in 2, 4, 6 and 8 A GeV Au + Au collisions at the AGS. The first measurements for pΛ correlations indicate a correlation magnitude of about 50% with a 26 MeV width. Detailed comparisons between data and theory suggest an emitting source with an effective Gaussian radius close to 4.5 fm. This radius is much larger than the value of 2.8 fm predicted by the relativistic transport code ART. Pairs of pK0, π−Λ and π−K0 are found to display essentially zero correlation at 6 A GeV. The latter observations are not unexpected considering that the proton–K0 interaction has a very small scattering length and there are no very well known interactions between pions and Λs or K0s.

Abstract: We have measured the sideward flow of neutral strange (K{sup 0}{sub s} ) mesons in 6A GeV Au +Au collisions. A prominent antiflow signal is observed for an impact parameter range (b(less-or-similar sign)7 fm ) which spans central and midcentral events. Since the K{sup 0}{sub s} scattering cross section is relatively small in nuclear matter, this observation suggests that the in-medium kaon vector potential plays an important role in high density nuclear matter. Abstract: Using the large acceptance Time Projection Chamber of experiment E895 at Brookhaven, measurements of collective sideward flow in Au+Au collisions at beam energies of 2A, 4A, 6A, and 8A GeV are presented in the form of in-plane transverse momentum and the first Fourier coefficient of azimuthal anisotropy v(1). These measurements indicate a smooth variation of sideward flow as a function of beam energy. The data are compared with four nuclear transport models which have an orientation towards this energy range. All four exhibit some qualitative trends similar to those found in the data, although none show a consistent pattern of agreement within experimental uncertainties.

Abstract: We present the first excitation function of ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ intensity interferometry at Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) energies (2--8 A GeV). The sensitivity of the multidimensional correlation functions to the geometry and dynamics of the pion-emitting system provides a stringent test of transport models of heavy ion collisions. Detailed comparisons with a realistic transport model, both with and without an explicit nuclear mean field, suggest that the beam energy evolution in the reaction dynamics is different in the model than in the data. A significantly increased ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ emission time scale, which has been suggested as a signal of the onset of the transition to quark-gluon plasma, is not observed.

Abstract: We present some of the latest results from the E895 experiment conducted at the BNL AGS accelerator. Au+Au collisions were recorded by the EOS Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at beam energies of 2, 4, 6, and 8 A GeV. The TPC detector permitted the reconstruction of individual collision events with almost 4π acceptance and good particle identification. This capability allowed E895 to study global observables and two particle correlations with respect to symmetries of the event. Flow excitation functions are examined and discussed in the context of the Nuclear Equation of State.

Abstract: The CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS was upgraded in 1998 by the addition of a cylindrical Time Projection Chamber. The aim is to improve the mass resolution of e+e− pairs in the ρ/ω/φ region to Δm/m < 2%. A progress report is given on the TPC performance during the 1998 commissioning runs (laser rays, beam halo muons, and particles produced by proton/π and lead beams hitting Pb and Au targets).

Abstract: During the 1996 lead run time, CERES has accumulated 42 million events, corresponding to a factor of 5 more statistics than in 1995 and 2.5 million events of a special photon-run. We report on the results of the low-mass e$^+$e$^-$-pair analysis. Since the most critical item is the poor signal-to-background ratio we also discuss the understanding of this background, in absolute terms, with the help of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation. Abstract: We have measured the proton elliptic flow excitation function for the Au + Au system spanning the beam energy range 2 -- 8 AGeV. The excitation function shows a transition from negative to positive elliptic flow at a beam energy, $E_{tr} \sim$ 4 AGeV. Detailed comparisons with calculations from a relativistic Boltzmann-equation are presented. The comparisons suggest a softening of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) from a stiff form (K \sim 380 MeV) at low beam energies (E_{Beam} \le 2 AGeV) to a softer form (K \sim 210 MeV) at higher energies (E_{Beam} \ge $ 4 AGeV) where the calculated baryon density $ \rho \sim 4 \rho_0$.

Abstract: The CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN-SPS is dedicated to study the production of e + e − -pairs in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Compared to extrapolations from results obtained in proton-induced reactions, it has previously observed an enhanced production in S-Au [1] and Pb-Au [2] collisions. To verify this enhancement and to study its properties, higher statistics were accumulated during a runtime in 1996. We report here, for the first time, on the results of this analysis (for details see ref. [3]).

Abstract: Net proton and negative hadron spectra for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158thinspthinspGeV per nucleon at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron were measured and compared to spectra from lighter systems. Net baryon distributions were derived from those of net protons. Stopping (rapidity shift with respect to the beam) and mean transverse momentum {l_angle}p{sub T}{r_angle} of net baryons increase with system size. The rapidity density of negative hadrons scales with the number of participant nucleons for nuclear collisions, whereas their {l_angle}p{sub T}{r_angle} is independent of system size. The {l_angle}p{sub T}{r_angle} dependence upon particle mass and system size is consistent with larger transverse flow velocity at midrapidity for Pb+Pb compared to S+S central collisions. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We report measurements of Xi and Xi-bar hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/- 0.12 for Xi, and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for Xi-bar, leading to the ratio of Xi-bar/Xi = 0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass spectra are of the order of 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total yield of Xi particles in Pb+Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per collision. Comparison to Xi production in properly scaled p+p reactions at the same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of Xi production in Pb+Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions.

Abstract: A sample of Lambda's produced in 2 A*GeV Ni + Cu collisions has been obtained with the EOS Time Projection Chamber at the Bevalac. Low background in the invariant mass distribution allows for the unambiguous demonstration of Lambda directed flow. The transverse mass spectrum at mid-rapidity has the characteristic shoulder-arm shape of particles undergoing radial transverse expansion. A linear dependence of Lambda multiplicity on impact parameter is observed, from which a total Lambda + Sigma^0 production cross section of $112 +/- 24 mb is deduced. Detailed comparisons with the ARC and RVUU models are made.

Abstract: Data on φ -production obtained by the CERN NA49 experiment for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/u are presented. Compared with pp interactions the φ -yield shows substantial strangeness enhancement: the φ /π ratio is found to increase by a factor of 2.6 ± 0.6, which is approximately the square of the K/π enhancement.

Abstract: The composition of forward-going projectile spectator matter in fixed-target Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A · GeV at the CERN SPS has been studied as a function of centrality. The data were measured with the NA49 veto calorimeter. We observe that forward-going spectator matter in central collisions consists of 9 neutrons, 7 protons, and half a deuteron on average. At large impact parameters most spectator nucleons are bound in fragments. The relative resolution of the average impact parameter derived from the measurement of spectator neutrons is roughly 19% in the range from zero to half maximum impact parameters.

Abstract: The directed and elliptic flow of protons and charged pions has been observed from the semi-central collisions of a 158 GeV/nucleon Pb beam with a Pb target. The rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow has been measured. The directed flow of the pions is opposite to that of the protons at high rapidity but both exhibit negative flow at low p t . The elliptic flow of both is fairly independent of rapidity but rises with p t .

Abstract: The CERES/NA45 collaboration measured, at the CERN SPS, low-mass electron pair production in Pb Au collisions at 158 A GeV/c incident momentum. In this paper we present an analysis of the data taken during the SPS Pb-beam period in the fall of 1995. The results confirm previous findings of CERES showing that the pair production in the mass range 0.2 ee 2 , when scaled to the ion case with the event multiplicity, is enhanced over the expected yield from the known hadronic sources in pp collisions. A comparison of the results for different multiplicity bins indicates that the excess increases faster than linearly with charged-particle multiplicity. We also present the transverse-momentum distributions of the observed pairs.

Abstract: Transverse kinetic energies of individual fragments have been measured over a broad range of emitter excitation energies for the reaction 1AGeV Au+C. For excitation energies leading to large intermediate mass fragment multiplicities, these transverse energies require large collective radial expansion of the emitting systems. However, the traditional decomposition of the transverse energy into a thermal component and a Coulomb and collective component proportional to the fragment mass cannot account for this expansion. Expansion velocities show an increase with decreasing fragment Z and thus indicate fractionation of the collective energy for the expanding system. This collective energy increases with emitter excitation up to about 50{percent} of the energy deposited for a nuclear system with total energy {approximately}12AMeV. Abstract: A high-statistics exclusive study of the multifragmentation of 1A GeV gold on carbon has been performed. Particles with Z{le}2 show evidence of emission in a first prompt stage as well as in a second equilibrium stage whereas fragments with Z{ge}3 appear to be emitted essentially only in the second stage. Two methods for the separation of the Z{le}2 particles into the two stages are given and they are in agreement. The yields for each stage are determined as a function of the event charged particle multiplicity m. The mass, nuclear charge, excitation energy per nucleon, and temperature of the remnant left after the first stage and their fluctuations have been determined as a function of m. The expansion of the remnant to fragment freeze-out is examined. The freeze-out temperature is determined from double isotope ratios as a function of m and isentropic trajectories are obtained in the temperature-density plane. The caloric curve shows a monotonic increase with excitation energy. Some of the energy is in the form of radial flow. Overall, the results are consistent with a previous statistical analysis of the data which suggests that, over a certain range of excitation energies, multifragmentation involves a continuous phase transition. {copyright}more » {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}« less

Abstract: The E895 experiment has undertaken a systematic and exclusive study of Au+Au collisions between 2–8 A GeV. Complete event-by-event data were obtained using the EOS time projection chamber (TPC) which provided good particle identification and continuous tracking over almost 4π solid angle. In central Au+Au collisions at 6 A GeV, the proton rapidity distribution indicates almost complete stopping, hence high baryon density. We present preliminary results on collective flow observables as a function of beam energy. Data are compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: Invariant mass analyses of (p,{pi}{sup {plus_minus}}) pairs in {sup 58}Ni+Cu collisions at 1.97A GeV have been performed and show correlations resulting from the decays of the {Delta} resonance, the {Lambda} baryon, and possibly the N{sup {asterisk}}(1440) resonance. A reduction in the {Delta} mass is observed and the mass reduction increases with collision centrality. Events generated by the relativistic cascade model (ARC) also reveal a mass reduction. The mass reduction is related to the size of the reaction volume and the details of {Delta} production mechanisms in heavy ion collisions. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We present new experimental results concerning the azimuthal distributions of proton-likes, light and intermediate mass fragments at midrapidity for Au(100-800 AMeV)+Au collisions measured with the FOPI phase-I detector at GSI in Darmstadt. The azimuthal distributions are investigated as a function of the collision centrality, the incident energy, the fragment charge and transverse momentum. The azimuthal anisotropy is maximum for impact parameters around 7 fm. Intermediate mass fragments present a stronger out-of-plane emission signal than light fragments and a saturation is reached for Z greater than or equal to 4. The azimuthal anisotropy increases with the fragment transverse momentum and decreases as the incident energy increases. The azimuthal anisotropy of Z = 2 particles investigated as a function of the scaled fragment transverse momentum follows an universal curve for bombarding energies between 250-800 AMeV. A signature for a transition from in-plane to out-of-plane emission is evidenced at the lowest beam energies.

Abstract: Charged pions are measured with the 4π detector FOPI at GSI using the Au on Au reaction at 1.06 AGeV bombarding energy. The pion multiplicities ngp increase with the number of participants Apart. The average pion multiplicities per participant are #### and #### These values are only half as large as extrapolated from the low-mass systems studied by Harris et al. The ratio #### increases with Apart and decreases with the pion kinetic energies. The pion kinetic energy spectra have concave shapes, their parametrization in terms of thermal Boltzmann distributions yields a low (T l,π) and high (Th,π) temperature which change with the cm emission angle Θ of the pions. In the angular range 45dg is larger than , the high temperatures , are, within experimental uncertainties, the same. The inclusive polar angular distributions of pions are anisotropic, dσ/dΩ increases for forward and backward angles. The forward — backward enhancements are independent of the pion kinetic energies or the number of participants. In addition to the preferred forward — backward emission, also the enhanced emission into the transverse direction Θ = 90° is observed for pions with high energies or for pions from near-central collisions. These observations and the shape of the rapidity spectra suggest that pions, emitted from the central rapidity region, are partly rescattered by spectator matter. The strength of the rescattering process depends only weakly on the number of participants. The experimental data are compared to the results of IQMD/GEANT calculations using momentum dependent NN interactions and a hard equation of state. The calculated pion multiplicities are approximately 50% larger than experimentally determined; the existence of secondary pion sources is reproduced by the calculation, but their predicted strengths are larger than experimentally observed.

Abstract: We study the energy dependence of collective (hydrodynamic-like) nuclear matter flow in (400{endash}1970){ital A} MeV Ni+Au and (1000{endash}1970){ital A} MeV Ni+Cu reactions. The flow increases with energy, appears to reach a maximum, and then to decrease at higher energies. Abstract: Using the FOPI facility at GSI, charged particles (1 ≤Z≤6) produced in the Au(150 A MeV)+Au reaction have been measured at laboratory angles 1.20 < Θlab < 300. Highly central collisions have been selected with two criteria, both dealing with the longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom of the reaction. The relevance of this selection method is supported by QMD calculations which indicate that such criteria are able to select mean impact parameters less than 2 fm. Bias effects introduced by the criteria have been evaluated. The centre-of-mass polar angle distributions of low energy clusters emitted in these central collisions, have been extracted: the intensity ratio deduced for a transverse to longitudinal emission is found to be R= 1.4 −0.4 +0.2 . Model comparisons using QMD are presented. The value of R appears to depend sensitively on the nucleon-nucleon cross section, σnn. Within this model, a value of σ=25+ - 5 mb is derived.

Abstract: Collisions of Au on Au at incident energies of 150, 250 and 400 A MeV were studied with the FOPI-facility at GSI Darmstadt. Nuclear charge (Z < 16) and velocity of the products were detected with full azimuthal acceptance at laboratory angles of 1-30 degrees. Isotope separated light charged particles were measured with movable multiple telescopes in an angular range of 6-90 degrees. Central collisions representing about 1 % of the reaction cross section were selected by requiring high total transverse energy, but vanishing sideflow. The velocity space distributions and yields of the emitted fragments are reported. The data are analysed in terms of a thermal model including radial flow. Abstract: We discuss preliminary data on stopping for central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon. The (net) proton rapidity density measured by the NA49 Time Projection Chambers, NA49 Time of Flight and the NA44 spectrometer is presented. Slightly higher stopping is observed relative to S + S at 200 GeV/nucleon. The rapidity density exhibits a plateau around mid-rapidity which is qualitatively different from results at the AGS and BEVALAC/SIS energies. The second part of the paper discusses the azimuthal correlation of the energy flow. Preliminary results reveal that the ‘fireball’ preserves the information of the collision geometry even at SPS energies.

Abstract: Light-particle emission from Au+Au collisions has been studied in the bombarding-energy range 100–250 A ·MeV, using ΔE − E R telescopes in coincidence with the FOPI detector in its phase I configuration. Center-of-mass energy spectra have been measured for Z = 1,2 isotopes emitted in central collisions at CM polar angles between 60° and 90°. Evidence for a collective expansion is reported, on the basis of the mean kinetic energies of hydrogen isotopes. Comparison is presented with statistical calculations (WIX code). Abstract: The production of neutral pions has been studied in the reactions 40 Ar + nat Ca , 86 Kr + nat Zr and 197 Au + 197 Au at 1 A GeV. For high energy pions emitted from the heavier systems a steeper than linear rise of the pion multiplicity with the centrality of the reaction is observed, indicating a pion production process other than binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. At low transverse momenta an enhancement of the π 0 -multiplicity increasing with the mass of the collision system is found. Systematic discrepancies between the experimental results and recent BUU, QMD and Cascade calculations are discussed.

Abstract: Velocity correlations of intermediate mass fragments (IMFs), produced in central collisions of Au+Au at 150 MeV beam energy, are extracted from measurements with the FOPI (phase I) detector system at SIS in GSI Darmstadt. The IMF correlation function for semicentral events is found to be affected by the directed sideward flow. When rotating the events into a unique reaction plane an enhancement of correlations, resulting from event mixing effects, vanishes. Selecting violent collisions with a high degree of azimuthal symmetry the correlation function appears nearly independent of additional event or single particle gate conditions. The comparison of the data with a Coulomb dominated final-state interaction model points to an expanding and multifragmenting soure with radius [ital R][similar to]14 fm.

Abstract: At the SIS/ESR accelerator facility at GSI in Darmstadt the 4π-detector system FOPI is under construction at present. It is designed for the investigation of central collisions of heavy ions in the energy range up to 2 A GeV. As phase I of this detector a forward wall has been built and used in various experiments. It comprizes a total number of 764 scintillators with an additional shell of 188 thin ΔE -detectors in front of it and covers the full azimuth of the polar angles from 1° to 30°. The velocity and the nuclear charge of the fragments are determined by a combined time-of-flight and ΔE measurement.

Abstract: Charged particles have been observed in collisions of Au on Au at an incident energy of 150{ital A} MeV using a high-granularity detector system covering approximately the forward hemisphere in the center-of-mass system. Highly central collisions have been studied using a double selection criterion which combines large charged-particle multiplicities with small transverse-momentum directivities. In this class of events about one quarter of the total nuclear charge emerges as intermediate-mass fragments with nuclear charges {ital Z}{gt}2. These fragments are centered at midrapidity and are produced with large transverse velocities.

Abstract: Results of a two-particle correlation analysis of high-$p_t$ charged particles in Pb-Au collisions at 158$A$ GeV/$c$ are presented. The data have been recorded by the CERES experiment at the CERN-SPS. The correlations are studied as function of transverse momentum, particle charge and collision centrality. We observe a jet-like structure in the vicinity of a high-$p_t$ trigger particle and a broad back-to-back distribution. The yields of associated particles per trigger show a strong dependence on the trigger/associate charge combination. A comparison to PYTHIA confirms the jet-like pattern at the near-side but suggests a strong modification at the away-side, implying significant energy transfer of the hard-scattered parton to the medium., Comment: 4 figures

Abstract: We present results of a two-pion correlation analysis performed with the Pb+Au collision data collected by the upgraded CERES experiment in the fall of 2000. The analysis was done in bins of the reaction centrality and the pion azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane. The pion source, deduced from the data, is slightly elongated in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane, similarly as was observed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.
