Scavenging is an alternative foraging strategy to predation for many carnivore species, as they shift between predation and scavenging in response to changes in resource availability. The use of carrion may lead to interspecific competition and is thus influenced by a risk–reward trade‐off to balance coexistence with guild‐members, where smaller species are expected to be more vigilant due to their vulnerability to larger competitors. We used cameras to investigate the utilization of viscera from the annual moose Alces alces hunt by four sympatric carnivore species: wolf Canis lupus, wolverine Gulo gulo, red fox Vulpes vulpes and pine marten Martes martes in south–central Scandinavia, in relation to body size and habitat. Red foxes had highest probability of visiting viscera sites in both open and forested habitats. Visits by both red foxes and pine martens were longer in open habitats, while number of visits or activity did not differ between habitats. For pine martens, the probability of visiting viscera sites was twice as high in forest compared to open habitat; consequently, red foxes showed the highest overall use of viscera. Red foxes were most vigilant, especially in open habitat, whereas wolverines and pine martens spent a higher proportion of time feeding. Increased vigilance of red foxes facilitates extended resources use in open habitat, while for pine martens, the risk–reward decision occurs before leaving forest cover and entering open habitats. Viscera were not used to a large extent by wolves or wolverines. Wolves are generally less prone to scavenging and wolverines probably use other food resources, more suitable for caching. Overall, competition did not prevent use of viscera, probably due to small‐scale temporal segregation and limited use by the larger carnivores. Consequently, this pulse of human‐subsidized food resources before winter may have important implications for the smaller facultative scavengers. Fire is the major forest disturbance in Siberian larch (Larix spp.) ecosystems, which occupy 20% of the boreal forest biome and are underlain by large, temperature-protected stocks of soil carbon. Fire is necessary for the persistence of larch forests, but fire can also alter forest stand composition and structure, with important implications for permafrost and carbon and albedo climate feedbacks. Long-term records show that burned area has increased in Siberian larch forests over the past several decades, and extreme climate conditions in recent years have led to record burned areas. Such increases in burn area have the potential to restructure larch ecosystems, yet the fire regime in this remote region is not well understood. Here, we investigated how landscape position, geographic climate variation, and interannual climate variability from 2001 to 2020 affected total burn area, the number of fires, and fire size in Siberian larch forests. The number of fires was positively correlated with metrics of drought (for example, vapor pressure deficit), while fire size was negatively correlated with precipitation in the previous year. Spatial variation in fire size was primarily controlled by landscape position, with larger fires occurring in relatively flat, low-elevation areas with high levels of soil organic carbon. Given that climate change is increasing both vapor pressure deficit and precipitation across the region, our results suggest that future climate change could result in more but smaller fires. Additionally, increasing variability in precipitation could lead to unprecedented extremes in fire size, with future burned area dependent on the magnitude and timing of concurrent increases in temperature and precipitation. Irruptive forest insects are a leading biotic disturbance across temperate and boreal forests. Outbreaks of forest insects are becoming more frequent and extensive due to anthropogenic drivers (e.g. climate and land‐use), perhaps increasing the likelihood that forests will experience multiple insect‐caused disturbances.Across the fire‐prone Douglas‐fir forests of western North America, recent outbreaks of the western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle have impacted large expanses of forests, with a higher degree of overlap than expected in some ecoregions. Outbreaks of both insects are positively related to host availability and exhibit density‐dependent population dynamics that are affected by climate and weather.Here, we leverage data from aerial detection surveys, estimates of host availability, climate and weather, and categorized fire severity to describe the spatial overlap between western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle and assess: (1) how climate and host availability influence the biogeography of outbreaks; (2) how weather incites outbreaks; and finally, (3) how prior disturbances (fire and biotic) affect the subsequent outbreak likelihood of western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle.Models demonstrate that western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle share similar predisposing drivers of outbreaks. Outbreaks of both insects were more likely to occur following warm weather, but only beetle outbreaks were more likely following drought. When controlling for differences in outbreak distribution and inciting factors, results indicate that both prior fire and interspecific disturbance altered the likelihood of subsequent insect‐caused disturbance.Specifically, Douglas‐fir beetle outbreaks were more likely to occur for several years following low severity fire, but less likely otherwise. Prior defoliation, especially longer duration defoliation, increased the likelihood of beetle outbreak within stands and across the landscape. On the contrary, western spruce budworm outbreaks were less likely to occur following fire, while prior beetle activity dampened budworm outbreak likelihood for several years, and then eventually increased outbreak likelihood.Synthesis: Biotic–biotic disturbance interactions have the potential to amplify the incidence of insect‐caused disturbance across subcontinental scales. Aim: Climate extremes are becoming more frequent under global warming, with substantial repercussions for vegetation growth. The degree to which climate extremes increase the risk of high‐impact events on vegetation growth is of high concern. Location: Northern Hemisphere (north of 30°N). Time Period: From 2001 to 2022. Major Taxa Studied: Plants. Methods: We utilised solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) as proxies for vegetation growth. We performed event coincidence and sensitivity analyses to attribute satellite‐derived vegetation growth extremes to diverse climate extremes (extreme heat, cold, wet and drought) in the Northern Hemisphere. Results: Our results showed that extreme heat and cold were the main climatic extremes that induced positive and negative vegetation growth extremes north of 30°N, respectively, mainly in cold and humid ecosystems (boreal and temperate forests). Water‐related extreme events accounted for less than one‐third of vegetation extremes. The contribution of drought to positive vegetation growth extreme events (approximately 17%), mainly in cold and humid ecosystems, was even slightly higher than that of extreme wet (approximately 12%), which predominantly impacted relatively warm and arid ecosystems (croplands and temperate grasslands). We further identified potential climatic thresholds that could reverse vegetation growth responses to climate extremes (temperature is 12.5°C and climatic water deficit is ‐60 mm, approximately). We also showed that the past two decades of warming and precipitation changes did not induce a shift in the main climatic drivers of vegetation extremes across northern ecosystems. Main Conclusions: Our results emphasise the crucial role of background hydrothermal conditions in the attribution of vegetation growth extremes to diverse climate extremes across northern ecosystems and have substantial implications for predicting how Northern Hemisphere vegetation will respond to increasing climate extremes in the future. Introduction: Despite extensive studies on soil microbial community structure and functions, the significance of plant-associated microorganisms, especially endophytes, has been overlooked. To comprehensively anticipate future changes in forest ecosystem function under future climate change scenarios, it is imperative to gain a thorough understanding of the community structure, diversity, and function of both plant-associated microorganisms and soil microorganisms. Methods: In our study, we aimed to elucidate the structure, diversity, and function of leaf endophytes, root endophytes, rhizosphere, and soil microbial communities in boreal forest. The microbial structure and composition were determined by high-throughput sequencing. FAPROTAX and FUNGuild were used to analyze the microbial functional groups. Results: Our findings revealed significant differences in the community structure and diversity of fungi and bacteria across leaves, roots, rhizosphere, and soil. Notably, we observed that the endophytic fungal or bacterial communities associated with plants comprised many species distinct from those found in the soil microbial communities, challenging the assumption that most of endophytic fungal or bacterial species in plants originate from the soil. Furthermore, our results indicated noteworthy differences in the composition functional groups of bacteria or fungi in leaf endophytes, root endophytes, rhizosphere, and soil, suggesting distinct roles played by microbial communities in plants and soil. Discussion: These findings underscore the importance of recognizing the diverse functions performed by microbial communities in both plant and soil environments. In conclusion, our study emphasizes the necessity of a comprehensive understanding of the structure and function microbial communities in both plants and soil for assessing the functions of boreal forest ecosystems. The frequency and severity of fire weather have increased under climate change, particularly in high-latitude boreal forests. Lightning, a key ignition source globally, is also expected to become more frequent with climate change and could significantly increase burn area. Current research on lightning-ignited wildfires (LIW) has a long history in boreal ecosystems but has typically focused on North America due to better data availability, while the lack of publicly available data for Eurasia has hindered our comprehensive understanding of important characteristics of LIW, such as holdover time, lightning-ignition efficiency, frequency, and spatial distribution of lightning-ignited wildfires in boreal forests. This study introduces the Temporal Minimum Distance (TMin) method, a novel approach to matching lightning strikes with wildfires without requiring ignition location, that outperformed current methodologies. As a result, we developed a comprehensive dataset of lightning-ignited wildfires across the entire boreal forest from 2012 to 2022, encompassing 6,228 fires — 4,186 in Eurasia and 2,042 in North America — each over 200 hectares in size. This dataset provides new opportunities to model ignition and spread dynamics of boreal wildfires and offers deeper insights into lightning-driven fire activity globally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The western capercaillie Tetrao urogallus, hereafter capercaillie, is the largest galliform bird present in the boreal and montane forests of the Western Palearctic. Precise and accurate methods for estimating the number of individuals and/or their densities are crucial for the proper management of its free‐ranging populations. However, obtaining reliable estimates of the abundance of populations of wild species and, particularly, of birds is not a simple task. In the case of lek‐mating birds such as capercaillie, surveys are traditionally based on lek counts, that is, counts of calling males present in their mating areas: the leks. This study was carried out on the Pyrenees at six capercaillie leks where two different lek counting approaches were performed: hide‐based and walk‐based. The results were compared with those obtained from an estimate of minimum population size (MPE) derived from genotyping all faeces samples found in the lek area, and with a population size estimate derived from a genetic mark‐recapture model (N^o) of each capercaillie lek. The results of N^o were used to estimate the detection rate (D) of both lek count approaches. Our results show that traditional lek counts do not detect all male capercaillies since the detection rate was 0.34 (95% CI: 0.26–0.43) for hide‐ and 0.56 (95% CI: 0.43–0.68) for walk‐based lek counts. Our results suggest that the walk‐based lek counts were more efficient than the hide‐based ones, providing more accurate results compared to the N^o estimate. The combination of non‐invasive sampling with genetic mark‐recapture model was found to be the most reliable method for obtaining the N^o of leks given that traditional lek counts underestimate the number of capercaillie and, furthermore, can cause disturbance to the species at these sites. The proportion of flaming and smouldering (or smoldering) activity occurring in landscape fires varies with fuel type and fuel characteristics, which themselves are influenced by ecology, meteorology, time since the last fire, etc. The proportion of these combustion phases greatly influences the rate of fuel consumption and smoke emission, along with the chemical composition of the smoke, which influences the effects on the atmosphere. Earth observation (EO) has long been suggested as a way to remotely map combustion phase, and here we provide the first known attempt at evaluating whether such approaches can lead to the desired improvements in smoke emissions estimation. We use intensively measured laboratory burns to evaluate two EO approaches hypothesized to enable remote determination of combustion phase and concurrent measurements of the smoke to determine how well each is able to improve estimation of smoke emission rates, smoke composition, and the overall rate of fuel consumption. The first approach aims to estimate the sub-pixel "effective fire temperature", which has been suggested to differ between flaming and smouldering combustion, and the second detects the potassium emission line (K-line) believed only to be present during flaming combustion. We find while the fire effective temperature approach can be suited to estimating fire radiative power (FRP), it does not significantly improve on current approaches to estimate smoke chemical makeup and smoke emission. The K-line approach does however provide these improvements when combined with the FRP data, improving the accuracy of the estimated CO2 emission rate by an average of 17±4 % and 42±15 %, respectively, depending on whether the K-line detection is used to simply classify the presence of flaming combustion or whether its magnitude is also used to estimate its relative proportion. Estimates of CO and CH4 emission rates were improved to a lesser extent than that of CO2, but the accuracy of the smoke modified combustion efficiency (MCE) estimates increased by 30±15 % and 46±10 %, respectively. MCE is correlated to the emissions factors (EFs) of many smoke constituents, so remotely deriving MCE provides a way to tailor these during smoke emissions calculations. Whilst we derived and tested our approaches on laboratory burns, we demonstrate their wider efficacy using airborne EO data of a boreal forest wildfire where we find that combined use of K-line and FRP data significantly changed estimated smoke MCE and CO2 and CO emission rates compared to the standard approach. Our findings suggest that satellite EO methods that jointly provide K-line and FRP data could enable marked improvements in the mapping of landscape fire combustion phase, fuel consumption, and smoke emissions rate and composition. High‐latitude vegetation experience different temperatures than the ambient air temperature. While lacking a regional plant temperature product, we drove the dynamic ecosystem model, LPJ‐GUESS, with widely used ERA5‐land surface temperature (Tsurf, at radiative equilibrium) and air temperature to understand ecosystem process responses to these two temperatures. We show that tundra plants' growth is stimulated by warmer Tsurf in the summer, but in the boreal forests, colder Tsurf in the non‐summer months constrains leaf development and enzyme activity the following growing season. Tsurf drives higher productivity of tundra plant individuals but leads to less productive individuals in the boreal forest, although with compensatory changes (almost 68%) in vegetation structure. We demonstrate the importance of forcing temperature in simulating high‐latitude ecosystem processes and call for a community effort to measure plant temperatures across canopy heights and seasons to reduce uncertainties in estimating high‐latitude plant responses and feedback to climate. Plain Language Summary: The temperature experienced by plants often differs from the surrounding air temperature. This plant temperature plays a large role in how plants grow and function. By using two common observation‐based temperature data sets (air and surface temperatures) to drive an ecosystem model, we found that warmer summer surface temperatures stimulate tundra plant growth, but colder temperatures in other seasons than summer can limit growth in the boreal forest. We highlight how important it is to use actual temperatures plants in high‐latitude ecosystems experience to improve our understanding of how these plants interact with their environment under the changing climate. Cloud properties are strongly influenced by ice formation; hence, we need to understand the sources of ice-nucleating particles (INPs) around the globe. Boreal forests are known as sources of bioaerosol, and recent work indicates that these dominate the INP spectra above - 24 °C. To quantify the INP population at temperatures below - 24 °C , we deployed a portable cloud expansion chamber (PINE) in a Finnish boreal forest from 13 March 2018 to 11 May 2018. Using the 6 min time resolution PINE data, we present several lines of evidence that INPs below - 24 °C in this location are also from biological sources: (i) an INP parameterization developed for a pine forest site in Colorado, where many INPs were shown to be biological, produced a good fit to our measurements; a moderate correlation of INPs with aerosol concentration larger than 0.5 µm and the fluorescent bioaerosol concentration; (ii) a negative correlation with relative humidity that may relate to enhanced release of bioaerosol at low humidity from local sources such as the prolific lichen population in boreal forests; and (iii) the absence of correlation with ultra-fine particles (3.5 to 50 nm), indicating that new particle formation events are not sources of INPs. This study should motivate further work to establish whether the commonality in bioaerosol ice-nucleating properties between spring in Finland and summer in Colorado is more generally applicable to different coniferous forest locations and times and also to determine to what extent these bioaerosols are transported to locations where they may affect clouds. Cyclical population dynamics are a common phenomenon in populations worldwide, yet the spatial organization of these cycles remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the spatial form and timing of a population collapse from 2018 to 2022 in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) across the northwest boreal forest. We analyzed survival, reproduction, and dispersal data from 143 individual global positioning system (GPS) collared lynx from populations across five study sites spanning interior Alaska to determine whether lynx displayed characteristics of a population wave following a concurrent wave in snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) abundance. Reproductive rates declined across the study sites; however, site-level reproduction declined first in our easternmost study sites, supporting the idea of a population wave. Despite a clear increase in percent of dispersing lynx, there was no evidence of directional bias in dispersal following a hare population wave. Analysis did show increasingly poor survival for lynx dispersing to the east compared to combined resident and westward dispersal. This pattern is consistent with a survival-mediated population wave in lynx as the driver of the theorized population wave. The combination of these factors supports the idea of a hierarchical response to snowshoe hare population declines with a drop in lynx reproduction followed by increased dispersal, and finally reduced survival. All of this evidence is consistent with the expected characteristics of a population undergoing a traveling wave and supports the hypothesis that lynx presence may facilitate and mirror the underlying wave patterns in snowshoe hare. Boreal and sub-alpine forests host seasonal snow for multiple months per year; however, snow regimes in these environments are rapidly changing due to rising temperatures and forest disturbances. Accurate prediction of forest snow dynamics, relevant for ecohydrology, biogeochemistry, cryosphere, and climate sciences, requires process-based models. While snow schemes that track the microstructure of individual snow layers have been proposed for avalanche research, so far, tree-scale processes resolving canopy representations only exist in a few snow-hydrological models. A framework that enables layer- and microstructure-resolving forest snow simulations at the meter scale is lacking to date. To fill this research gap, this study introduces the forest snow modeling framework FSMCRO, which combines two detailed, state-of-the art model components: the canopy representation from the Flexible Snow Model (FSM2) and the snowpack representation of the Crocus ensemble model system (ESCROC). We apply FSMCRO to discontinuous forests at boreal and sub-alpine sites to showcase how tree-scale forest snow processes affect layer-scale snowpack properties. Simulations at contrasting locations reveal marked differences in stratigraphy throughout the winter. These arise due to different prevailing processes at under-canopy versus gap locations and due to variability in snow metamorphism dictated by a spatially variable snowpack energy balance. Ensemble simulations allow us to assess the robustness and uncertainties of simulated stratigraphy. Spatially explicit simulations unravel the dependencies of snowpack properties on canopy structure at a previously unfeasible level of detail. Our findings thus demonstrate how hyper-resolution forest snow simulations can complement observational approaches to improve our understanding of forest snow dynamics, highlighting the potential of such models as research tools in interdisciplinary studies. Background: Scots Pine is one of the main forest-forming species in boreal forests; it has great economic and ecological significance. This study aimed to develop and test primers for detecting nucleotide polymorphisms in genes that are promising for detecting adaptive genetic variability in populations of Pinus sylvestris in the Urals and adjacent territories. Objectives: The objects of the study were 13 populations of Scots Pine located in the Perm Territory, Chelyabinsk Region, and the Republic of Bashkortostan. Results: Sixteen pairs of primers to loci of potentially adaptively significant genes were developed, from which three pairs of primers were selected to detect the nucleotide diversity of the studied populations. The indicator of total haplotype diversity determined in the three studied loci varied from 0.620 (Pinus-12 locus) to 0.737 (Pinus-11 locus) and, on average, amounted to 0.662. The nucleotide diversity indicators in P. sylvestris in the study region were, on average, low (π = 0.004, θW = 0.013). Their highest values were found at the Pinus-12 locus (π = 0.005; θW = 0.032), and the lowest were found at the Pinus-15 locus (π = 0.003; θW = 0.002). This indicates that Pinus-15 is the most conserved of the three studied loci. In the three studied P. sylvestris loci associated with adaptation to environmental factors, 97 polymorphic positions were identified. The 13 populations of P. sylvestris are characterized by an average level of genetic diversity (Hd = 0.662; π = 0.004; θ = 0.013). Conclusions: The polymorphic loci of adaptively significant genes of P. sylvestris can help identify the adaptive potential of pine forests in conditions of increasing ambient temperatures. Sequential (S) and equal-time (ET) methods were applied to assess the temperature sensitivity of respiration of peat soils in different terrestrial ecosystems: southern tundra, northern taiga, and mixed coniferous–broadleaved forests. The Q10 values varied widely (1.3–4.8) and in case of the ET method decreased from northern to temperate latitudes. In the cold range (5–15°С), Q10 increased from the southern tundra (3.5) to the northern taiga (4.8) and then sharply decreased in the zone of mixed forests (2.5). Meanwhile, warm range (15–25°С) showed a clear decline of Q10 from northern to temperate latitudes: southern tundra (2.6) > northern taiga (1.6) > coniferous–broadleaved forests (1.3). Application of the S method resulted in low variability of Q10 values. Our results demonstrate a higher temperature sensitivity of the respiration of peat soils in northern latitudes as compared to that in the temperate zone. The distribution of species in a patchy habitat may be influenced by competitive interactions. The dominant and highly competitive boreal ant species belong to the Formica rufa group. A pair of species, Formica aquilonia and Formica polyctena, require extensive territories due to their multi-nest breeding habits. The coexistence and habitat patterns of these two wood ant species in the boreal forest landscape were investigated. Forest characteristics in the vicinity of nests in forest patches were similar for both species, but they did not coexist in the same sampling plots of 0.79 ha in forest patches, indicating competitive exclusion. The sampling plots in large forest patches were more occupied by F. aquilonia, while no such association was found for F. polyctena. At a larger spatial scale (78.5 ha), we found that F. polyctena was more tolerant of smaller forest patches than F. aquilonia suggesting that these two ant species can coexist in moderately fragmented forest landscapes. However, forest habitat loss, fragmentation and climate-induced changes in forest tree structure may shift the species balance in favour of F. polyctena over F. aquilonia in the future. Persistence of standing dead trees (snags) is an important determinant for their role for biodiversity and dead wood associated carbon fluxes. How fast snags fall varies widely among species and regions and is further influenced by a variety of stand‐ and tree‐level factors. However, our understanding of this variation is fragmentary at best, partly due to lack of empirical data.Here, we took advantage of the accruing time series of snag observations in the Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish National Forest Inventories that have been followed in these programs since the mid‐1990s. We first harmonized observations from slightly different inventory protocols and then, using this harmonized dataset of ca. 43,000 observations that had a consistent 5‐year census interval, we modelled the probability of snags of the main boreal tree species Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies and Betula spp. falling, as a function of tree‐ and stand‐level variables, using Bayesian logistic regression modelling.The models were moderately good at predicting snags remaining standing or falling, with a correct classification rate ranging from 68% to 75% among species.In general, snag persistence increased with tree size and climatic wetness, and decreased with temperature sum, advancing stage of decay, site productivity and disturbance intensity (mainly harvesting).Synthesis and applications: The effect of harvesting demonstrates that an efficient avenue to increase the amount of snags in managed forests is protecting them during silvicultural operations. In the warmer future, negative relationship between snag persistence and temperature suggests decreasing the time snags remain standing and hence decreasing habitat availability for associated species. Wood ash fertilization remarkably increases tree growth and hence, carbon sequestration in drained boreal peatland forests, particularly in nitrogen (N)-rich Scots pine sites with limited phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Because ash lacks N, N-deficient ombrotrophic and poor oligotrophic sites are generally considered unsuitable for ash fertilization. In this study, timber production was investigated in six field experiments in N-poor, drained Scots pine dominated peatlands in central Finland, where ash fertilization was applied 15–85 years earlier. Ash significantly increased tree growth in all the study sites. Unfertilized plots showed long-term average mean annual increment (MAI) of 2.01 m3·ha−1·a−1, whereas in fertilized plots MAI was 4.46 m3·ha−1·a−1. An analysis with nonlinear mixed effects model revealed a faster volume yield development and higher asymptote of the mean curve in fertilized plots. Higher amount of K in the ash significantly increased the response. Fertilizations were financially lucrative: on average, the break-even cost surpassed the ash fertilization cost (390 € ha−1) more than two-fold at 5% interest rate. The current nutrient status of fertilized trees was rather balanced. The results proved that the long-term growth response to ash fertilization in poor drained peatland sites is comparable to N-rich sites, but the response time is distinctively longer. Moose (Alces alces) in boreal habitats feed and rest where they are exposed to Dipteran flies and the parasites they carry. We collected 31,905 flies during the summer from 12 habituated moose on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Moose flies, Haematobosca alcis (Snow), Diptera: Muscidae—a species that completes its entire life cycle on or around moose—accounted for 91% of flies collected; the reminder of the flies collected included mosquitoes (Culicidae), black flies (Simuliidae), and deer flies (Tabanidae). Flies impose physiological costs for moose, e.g. vectors for parasites such as Legworm (Onchocerca spp.) which causes sores on the hind legs of moose. We found that the number of sores present on the hind legs of moose is positively correlated with body fat, which suggests a correlation between gains of energy and damage from flies. We also found that the number of sores is negatively correlated with serum albumin, which is indicative of an inflammatory response and body protein being used to repair injuries from flies and parasites. The number or type of flies present on a Moose were not correlated with the concentration of corticosteroids in saliva or feces. Flies do not elicit a stress response in moose even though the costs of repairing wounds and resisting infections of those wounds likely reduce gains of protein from summer foraging. Nitrogen (N) addition can stimulate tree growth; however, the strength of this growth effect usually changes over time and the factors underlying these responses are not fully understood. Based on a decade‐long N addition experiment (by adding 0, 20, 50, and 100 kg N ha−1 yr−1) in a boreal forest, we studied responses of tree growth to N addition over time and explored the potential role of temporal precipitation variation and plant stoichiometric changes in mediating this. We found positive growth responses to N addition but this effect changed nonlinearly over time. Annual precipitation was positively related to growth under high‐level N addition; hence, a hump‐shape temporal pattern in precipitation contributed to the nonlinear tree growth responses. After precipitation effects were accounted for, the positive growth responses to N addition peaked in the seventh year and then declined for all levels of N. Later reductions in growth responses could partly be attributed to increased leaf N:phosphorus (P) ratio over time, especially at higher N addition rates. We also found an increase in soil acid phosphatase, the ratio of labile to occluded soil P fraction, and a decreased ratio in leaf N to P resorption efficiency with increasing N addition rates during the late stage of this experiment, suggesting increased P demand. Collectively, our results imply that changes in plant nutrient stoichiometry with cumulative N input may limit the N stimulation on tree growth over time, while temporal precipitation variation appears unlikely to modulate this effect under the atmospheric N deposition. Wildfire strongly influences permafrost environment and soil organic carbon (SOC) pool. In this study, we reviewed the effects of fire severity, time after a fire, and frequency on SOC in boreal permafrost regions. This review highlighted several key points: the effect of wildfires on SOC increased with an increase of fire severity, and the amount of vegetation returned and surface organic matter replenished was less in a short term, which resulted in a significantly lower SOC content compared to that of before the fire. Within a short period after fire, the SOC in near‐surface permafrost and the active layer decreased significantly due to the loss of above ground biomass, permafrost thaw, and increased microbial decomposition; as the years pass after a fire, the SOC gradually accumulates due to the contributions of litter layer accumulation and rooting systems from different stages of succession. The increase in fire frequency accelerated permafrost thawing and the formation of thermokarst, resulting in the rapid release of a large amount of soil carbon and reduced SOC storage. Therefore, the study on the effects of wildfires on SOC in the boreal permafrost region is of great significance to understanding and quantifying the carbon balance of the ecosystem. Ice nucleating particles (INPs) play a crucial role in initiating ice crystal formation in clouds, influencing the dynamics and optical properties of clouds and their impacts on precipitation and the climate system. Despite their importance, there is limited knowledge about the vertical distribution of INPs. This study focuses on aircraft measurements conducted during spring 2018 above the boreal forest of Hyytiälä, Finland. Similarities between INP concentrations, activated fractions, particle concentrations, and size distributions observed at ground level and in the boundary layer aloft indicate that surface particles and INPs are efficiently transported and mixed within the boundary layer. INP concentrations observed in the boundary layer are best predicted by a parameterization describing near-surface INP concentrations driven by the abundance of biogenic aerosol in the Finnish boreal forest, suggesting that biogenic INPs are dominant in the boundary layer above the same environment. Most of the INP concentrations and activated fractions observed in the free troposphere are notably lower than in the boundary layer, and the distinct particle size distributions suggest that different aerosol populations, likely resulting from long-range transport, are present in the free troposphere. However, we show one case where higher INP concentrations are observed in the free troposphere and where a homogeneous particle population exists from the surface to the free troposphere. This indicates that surface particles and INPs from the boreal forest can occasionally reach the free troposphere, which is particularly important as the INPs in the free troposphere can further travel horizontally and/or vertically and impact cloud formation. The world's forests are being increasingly disturbed from exposure to the compounding impacts of land use and climate change, in addition to natural disturbance regimes. Boreal forests have a lower level of deforestation compared to tropical forests, and while they have higher levels of natural disturbances, the accumulated impact of forest management for commodity production coupled with worsening fire weather conditions and other climate-related stressors is resulting in ecosystem degradation and loss of biodiversity. We used satellite-based time-series analysis of two canopy indices—canopy photosynthesis and canopy water stress—to calculate an index that maps the relative stability of forest canopies in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. By drawing upon available spatial time-series data on logging, wildfire, and insect infestation impacts, we were able to attribute the causal determinants of areas identified as having unstable forest canopy. The slope of the two indices that comprise the stability index also provided information as to where the forest is recovering from prior disturbances. The stability analyses and associated spatial datasets are available in an interactive web-based mapping app. that can be used to map disturbed forest canopies and the attribution of disturbances to human or natural causes. This information can assist decision-makers in identifying areas that are potentially ecologically degraded and in need of restoration and those stable areas that are a priority for protection. The patterns of radial growth in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) have been studied within the southern taiga subzone of Western Siberia. The objects of study included pine stands from different habitats: dry valley pine stands growing on sandy podzols and mire pine stands characterized by differing water–mineral nutrition and pyrogenic impact. Using a multivariate statistical analysis (cluster and discriminant analysis) of the data on the cyclic fluctuations in the radial growth (increase, decrease, or duplication of the radial growth index of the previous year), four clusters have been identified. Mire pine stands can be classified as eutrophic, oligo-mesotrophic, oligotrophic, and dry valley. The final result has shown 100% of correctly classified objects. The average width of annual rings under dry valley conditions is 1.05 mm. For eutrophic, oligo-mesotrophic, and oligotrophic pine stands, the value of this index is 0.81, 0.57, and 0.39 mm, respectively. The primary trend of change in the annual ring width over time (trend) is determined by a second-order parabola (p < 0.001). The signs and highly significant coefficients of the regression equations are postulated. In oligotrophic pine stands, the width of annual rings increases annually by 0.80 mm on average, with the annual average slowdown of 0.004 mm; the extremum (inflection point) is reached at the age of 190 years. In the case of oligo-mesotrophic stands, the width of annual rings increases by 0.95 mm with a slowdown of 0.002 mm; the extremum point is 340 years. For dry valley stands, the values of these indices are 4.27 and 0.068 mm and 62 years, respectively. In eutrophic pine stands, according to the linear trend, an increase in the width of annual rings for 1 year makes 0.715 mm on average. The relative frequencies of cyclic fluctuations in the increase and decrease of the annual ring width demonstrate equivalent ratios of their occurrence: 45–48% in eutrophic and dry valley pine stands and 40–41% in oligo-mesotrophic and oligotrophic stands. These equally possible recurrence episodes can be considered one of the mechanisms of societal formation via probabilistic good-neighbor relationships between trees in the interests of the whole community. The occurrence of duplicate variants in eutrophic and dry valley pine stands is 7–9% and increases to 18–20% in oligotrophic and oligo-mesotrophic stands: the more severe the conditions, the higher the conciliatory principles. Fire is the largest natural disturbance factor in the boreal forest and plays a critical role in the composition, structure, and succession of stands and landscapes. The island of Newfoundland, located in eastern Canada, is subjected to a greater maritime influence, which may result in longer fire return intervals. The limited data on the fire regime does not account for interactions between fire, vegetation, and climate throughout the Holocene. We used sediment cores from Arnold's Pond, Terra Nova National Park, which covered the last ~11,800 cal. yr BP, to investigate these interactions. We recognize 4 pollen zones and macroscopic charcoal analysis detected 45 local fire events. The 250-year mean fire return interval associated with the current vegetation is longer than a previous estimate for the park, but significantly shorter than other estimates for the island. Our mean fire return interval is within the range of fire estimates from Quebec with similar vegetation. Our results suggest that the fire regime was primarily influenced by vegetation and climate. The transition to an open forest from a shrub tundra resulted in increased fire activity and fire frequency, which were likely driven by additional fuel on the landscape, but could have also been influenced by unknown climatic factors. We identified several examples of changes in the fire frequencies and/or charcoal accumulation that coincided with regional climate shifts, but we also identified a non-synchronous change. The non-synchronous shift to drier conditions resulted in a ~500-year time lag between peak Pinus strobus abundance and maximum fire frequency. Synchronous shifts in fire activity and/or fire frequency coincided with the 8200 event, Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little Ice Age. We also noted a decrease in fire frequency between 2600-1500 cal. yr BP that coincided with similar changes in the fire frequency from ~3000-1000 cal. yr BP in Que bec. Combining forest growth models with remotely sensed data is possible under a generalized hierarchical model-based (GHMB) inferential framework. This implies the existence of two submodels: the growth model itself (⁠|$\mathcal{M}_{1}$|⁠) and a second submodel that links the growth predictions to some remotely sensed variables (⁠|$\mathcal{M}_{2}$|⁠). Analytical GHMB estimators are available to fit submodel |$\mathcal{M}_{2}$| and account for the uncertainty stemming from submodel |$\mathcal{M}_{1}$|⁠ , i.e. the growth model. However, when the growth model is individual based, it is usually too complex to be differentiated with respect to its parameters. As a result, the analytical GHMB estimators cannot be used. In this study, we developed a bootstrap approach for the GHMB inferential framework in order to combine individual-based forest growth models with remotely sensed data. Through simulation studies, we showed that the bootstrap estimators were nearly unbiased when both submodels were linear. The estimator of the parameter estimates remained nearly unbiased when submodel |$\mathcal{M}_{1}$| became complex, i.e. non-differentiable, and submodel |$\mathcal{M}_{2}$| was nonlinear with heterogeneous variances and correlated error terms. The variance estimator showed some biases but these were relatively small. We further demonstrated through a real-world case study that the predictions of a complex individual-based model could be linked to a Landsat-8 near-infrared spectral band in the boreal forest zone of Quebec, Canada. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has been adopted as a feasible technique to characterize tree stems while the characterization of trees' branching architecture has remained less explored. In general, branching architecture refers to the spatial arrangement of branches and their characteristics that are important when exploring the eco-physiological functioning of trees or assessing tree biomass and wood quality. Our aim was to develop a point cloud processing method for identifying and segmenting individual branches from TLS point clouds. We applied a Cartesian-to-cylinder coordinate transformation and a simple morphological filtering for stem surface reconstruction and stem-branch separation. Then branch origins were identified as their intersections with the stem surface, and individual branches were segmented based on their connectivity with the branch origins. The method, implemented in MATLAB and openly available, was validated on a 0.4-ha mature and managed southern boreal forest stand. The branch identification performance was assessed based on visual interpretation of 364 randomly sampled stem sections from 100 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris (L.)) trees that were inspected for branch identification accuracy. The results showed that the branches could only be identified up to the height where the stem could be reconstructed. For 90% of the trees, this threshold ranged between 59.3% and 81.2% relative tree heights. Branches located below this threshold were identified with a recall of 75%, a precision of 92%, and an F1-score of 0.82. Based on our study, it appears that in a managed Scots pine stand, most of the branches can be identified with the developed method for the most valuable stem part eligible for logwood. The findings obtained in this study promote the feasibility of using TLS in applications requiring detailed characterization of trees. Wildlife contend with seasonal fluctuations in resource availability and have adapted survival and reproductive strategies to overcome resource limitations. Many northern ungulates are adapted to a dynamic nutritional landscape and rely on somatic reserves accumulated during the short growing season. Moose (Alces alces) populations in the boreal forest respond to variation in their nutritional landscapes that quickly change after wildland fires. We tested associations between somatic energy reserves of female moose and a suite of factors relevant to energy demands and nutrient availability after landscape scale wildland fires on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. From 2015-2022, we immobilized 97 individual, adult moose (n=163 early winter; n=98 late winter) and collected over 223,000 GPS locations. We evaluated if somatic energy reserves of cow moose were influenced by endogenous or exogenous energy demands, or access to moose forage to accumulate energy reserves. Cows that gave birth and lost their neonate(s) early in the summer had more early winter body fat (14.39% ± 0.24SE) compared with cows that gave birth and the neonate survived to 4-months-old (10.59% ± 0.34SE). Body fat measured in early winter was positively correlated with home ranges of cows during summer with a higher percent cover of aspen forage. Late winter body fat of cow moose was negatively correlated with home ranges with higher percent cover of aspen forage, but positively correlated with home ranges with higher percent cover of willows and shoulder season forages. Our results highlight that a suite of plant species and seral states is needed across the landscape for moose to accumulate and moderate the loss of somatic energy reserves over the year. Furthermore, our results emphasize the importance of shoulder season forages for moose when snow depth is low. Managing the nutritional landscape of the boreal forest through interagency wildland fire management could create a mosaic of seral states that enhances moose forage, while reducing wildland fire hazards along the wildland urban interface and providing ecosystem services. The permafrost region contains a significant portion of the world's soil organic carbon, and its thawing, driven by accelerated Arctic warming, could lead to the substantial release of greenhouse gases, potentially disrupting the global climate system. Accurate predictions of carbon cycling in permafrost ecosystems hinge on the robust calibration of model parameters. However, manually calibrating numerous parameters in complex process-based models is labor-intensive and further complicated by equifinality – the presence of multiple parameter sets that can equally fit the observed data. Incorrect calibration can lead to unrealistic ecological predictions. In this study, we employed the Model Analysis and Decision Support (MADS) software package to automate and enhance the accuracy of parameter calibration for carbon dynamics within the coupled Dynamic Vegetation Model, Dynamic Organic Soil Model, and Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (DVM-DOS-TEM), a process-based ecosystem model designed for high-latitude regions. The calibration process involved adjusting rate-limiting parameters to accurately replicate observed carbon and nitrogen fluxes and stocks in both soil and vegetation. Gross primary production, net primary production, vegetation carbon, vegetation nitrogen, and soil carbon and nitrogen pools served as synthetic observations for a black spruce boreal forest ecosystem. To validate the efficiency of this new calibration method, we utilized model-generated synthetic observations. This study demonstrates the calibration workflow, offers an in-depth analysis of the relationships between parameters and synthetic observations, and evaluates the accuracy of the calibrated parameter values. Fungal traits can provide a mechanistic understanding of how wood‐inhabiting fungi interact with their environment and how that influences community assembly in deadwood. However, fungal trait exploration is relatively new and almost no studies measure fungal traits in their environment.In this study we tested species‐ and trait‐environment relationships in reproducing fungal communities inhabiting 571 Norway spruce (Picea abies) logs in 55 isolated forest patches (0.1–9.9 ha) of different naturalness types, located in Northern boreal Sweden. The studied patches were (1) semi‐natural set‐aside patches within highly managed landscapes, or (2) old‐growth natural patches located in an unmanaged landscape. We tested species and trait relationships to deadwood substrate and forest patch variables. We measured mean fruit body size and density for each of the 19 species within communities.Traits assembled in relation to log decay stage and forest patch naturalness, illustrating the important role of deterministic environmental filtering in shaping reproducing wood‐inhabiting fungal communities. Early decay stage communities had larger, less dense, annual fruiting bodies of half‐resupinate type and were more often white‐rot fungi. Species rich mid‐decay stage communities had mixed trait assemblages with more long lived perennial fruit bodies of intermediate size, and both brown‐ and white‐rot fungi equally represented. Finally, late decay stage communities had smaller, denser and perennial fruit bodies, more often of the brown‐rot type.The relationships between the studied traits and decay stages were similar in both set‐aside and natural patches. However, set‐aside semi‐natural patches in highly managed landscapes more frequently supported species with smaller, perennial and resupinate fruit bodies compared to natural patches in an unmanaged landscape.Synthesis. We found that log decay stage was the primary driver of fungal community assembly of species and traits in isolated forest patches. Our results suggest that decay stage filters four reproduction traits (fruit body density, size, lifespan and type) and one resource‐use trait (white or brown rot). Our results highlights, for the first time, that communities with diverse fungal reproductive traits are maintained foremost across all deadwood decay stages under different forest naturalness conditions. Because of their wide distribution, short life cycle, rapid reproduction, and sensitivity to the environment, rodents can indicate changes in habitat quality and climate variables. Long-term studies are needed to verify these changes and assumptions about their causes. We analyzed small mammal trapping data in Lithuania, covering the period 1975–2023, with 1821 trapping sites and 57,426 small mammal individuals, with a focus on the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). The aim of this study was to assess temporal changes in the relative abundance and proportion of this species in small mammal communities in relation to their habitats. With 21,736 captured individuals, C. glareolus was a dominant species in the country; its proportion in general was 37.9%, with 60.0% in forests. Open habitats, meadows and agricultural land were characterized by the lowest species proportions. Our main findings were the confirmation of decreasing abundances and proportions of C. glareolus since the 1990s, the absence of cyclical fluctuations in the relative abundances of the species in general and in forest habitats, and the introduction of a south–north cline in species proportions. Forests play a crucial role in global carbon cycling by absorbing and storing significant amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Although boreal forests contribute to approximately 45% of the total forest carbon sink, tree growth and soil carbon sequestration are constrained by nutrient availability. Here, we examine if long‐term nutrient input enhances tree productivity and whether this leads to carbon storage or whether stimulated microbial decomposition of organic matter limits soil carbon accumulation. Over six decades, nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium were supplied to a Pinus sylvestris‐dominated boreal forest. We found that nitrogen fertilization alone or together with calcium and/or phosphorus increased tree biomass production by 50% and soil carbon sequestration by 65% compared to unfertilized plots. However, the nonlinear relationship observed between tree productivity and soil carbon stock across treatments suggests microbial regulation. When phosphorus was co‐applied with nitrogen, it acidified the soil, increased fungal biomass, altered microbial community composition, and enhanced biopolymer degradation capabilities. While no evidence of competition between ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi has been observed, key functional groups with the potential to reduce carbon stocks were identified. In contrast, when nitrogen was added without phosphorus, it increased soil carbon sequestration because microbial activity was likely limited by phosphorus availability. Understanding the drivers of community assembly is critical for predicting the future of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Ecological selection ubiquitously shapes communities by selecting for individuals with the most suitable trait combinations. Detecting selection types on key traits across environmental gradients and over time has the potential to reveal the underlying abiotic and biotic drivers of community dynamics. Here, we present a model‐based predictive framework to quantify the multidimensional trait distributions of communities (community trait spaces), which we use to identify ecological selection types shaping communities along environmental gradients. We apply the framework to over 3600 boreal forest understory plant communities with results indicating that directional, stabilizing, and divergent selection all modify community trait distributions and that the selection type acting on individual traits may change over time. Our results provide novel and rare empirical evidence for divergent selection within a natural system. Most tree species underwent cycles of contraction and expansion during the Quaternary. These cycles led to an ancient and complex genetic structure that has since been affected by extensive gene flow and by strong local adaptation. The extent to which hybridization played a role in this multi‐layered genetic structure is important to be investigated. To study the effect of hybridization on the joint population genetic structure of two dominant species of the Eurasian boreal forest, Picea abies and P. obovata, we used targeted resequencing and obtained around 480 K nuclear SNPs and 87 chloroplast SNPs in 542 individuals sampled across most of their distribution ranges. Despite extensive gene flow and a clear pattern of Isolation‐by‐Distance, distinct genetic clusters emerged, indicating the presence of barriers and corridors to migration. Two cryptic refugia located in the large hybrid zone between the two species played a critical role in shaping their current distributions. The two species repeatedly hybridized during the Pleistocene and the direction of introgression depended on latitude. Our study suggests that hybridization helped both species to overcome main shifts in their distribution ranges during glacial cycles and highlights the importance of considering whole species complex instead of separate entities to retrieve complex demographic histories. Aim: Quantify tree functional and phylogenetic richness and divergence at the global scale, and explore the drivers underpinning these biogeographic patterns. Location: Global. Time Period: Present. Methods: Using global tree occurrence data, we outlined species' observed ranges using individual alpha hulls to obtain per‐pixel tree species composition at a 0.83‐degree resolution. Using eight traits from a recent tree‐trait database and a vascular‐plant phylogeny we computed and mapped four pixel‐level biodiversity indices, including two metrics related to richness: phylogenetic richness and functional richness, and two related to divergence: mean pairwise phylogenetic distance and Rao's quadratic entropy. To account for the effect of species richness, we also calculated standardized effect sizes accounting for richness for each pixel. We then explored the relations between richness and divergence and the latitudinal patterns of divergence both globally and across biomes. Finally, we used a random forest modelling approach to test for drivers of the different dimensions of diversity in trees. Results: In contrast to the latitudinal gradient in species richness, functional and phylogenetic divergence both peak in mid‐latitude systems, exhibiting the highest values in temperate ecosystems and lowest values in boreal and tropical forests. This result holds for functional divergence when removing gymnosperms but the peak flattens for phylogenetic divergence. Phylogenetic richness is consistently lower than expected given the number of species, whereas functional richness has higher‐than‐expected values at mid‐latitudes, mimicking functional divergence patterns. When considering the drivers of these diversity patterns, temperature and historical speciation rates consistently emerge as the strongest forces driving divergence, with negligible effects of human influence, soils or historical climate stability. Main Conclusions: Collectively, these results reveal unique similarities and disparities across biomes that are not apparent in any single dimension of biodiversity, highlighting the importance of considering multiple aspects of biodiversity in the management of natural ecosystems. Commercial thinning is a silvicultural treatment that has been practiced for centuries in Europe. However, in Eastern Canada, its application to naturally regenerated stands is much more recent, and long-term monitoring of this treatment realized in an operational context is rare. We monitored 135 paired sample plots (thinned and control) over a 20-year period. The plots are in stands dominated by either black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), or balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and distributed throughout the boreal and temperate forests of Québec (Canada). Twenty years after treatment, thinning increased quadratic mean diameter (QMD) for balsam fir (1.7 cm) and jack pine (0.7 cm), while for black spruce the change in QMD varied according to the QMD before treatment. Periodic annual increment in gross merchantable volume of thinned and control plots was similar for balsam fir and jack pine but was less in thinned black spruce plots during the first 5 years. Thinning did not affect mortality, which remained low until 15 years after treatment. As commercial thinning should gain popularity over the next years, our study provides a benchmark of the expected effects when the treatment is performed in an operational context. We studied how management intensity and climate severity affect volume growth, timber yield, carbon stocks, and the amount of deadwood in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris (L.)), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) dominated stands in the Republic of Karelia and Arkhangelsk region of northwest Russia. Using the forest ecosystem model (SIMA) under different climates (current and representative concentration pathway scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), no-thinning, low, medium, and high intensity thinning rotational forestry regimes were simulated. Under RCPs, the volume growth and timber yield (5%–53%), carbon stocks (1%–22%), and deadwood amounts (11%–75%) increased for all Scots pine and silver birch stands. The use of low intensity management increased volume growth and carbon stocks (3%–16%) and deadwood amount (up to 60%) under RCPs, but not timber yield (±3%) in these stands. For Norway spruce stands, the volume growth (5%–26%), timber yield (23%–75%), and carbon stocks (5%–15%) decreased under RCP8.5, but deadwood amount increased (up to 142%). Intensive management increased volume growth (4%–19%), timber yield (4%–63%), carbon stocks (up to 14%), and deadwood amounts (up to 49%). Leaf litter decomposition, a crucial component of the global carbon cycle, relies on the pivotal role played by microorganisms. However, despite their ecological importance, leaf-litter-decomposing microorganism taxonomic and functional diversity needs additional study. This study explores the taxonomic composition, dynamics, and functional role of microbial communities that decompose leaf litter of forest-forming tree species in two ecologically unique regions of Europe. Twenty-nine microbial metagenomes isolated from the leaf litter of eight forest-forming species of woody plants were investigated by Illumina technology using read- and assembly-based approaches of sequences analysis. The taxonomic structure of the microbial community varies depending on the stage of litter decomposition; however, the community's core is formed by Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Stenotrophomonas, and Pedobacter genera of Bacteria and by Aureobasidium, Penicillium, Venturia genera of Fungi. A comparative analysis of the taxonomic structure and composition of the microbial communities revealed that in both regions, seasonal changes in structure take place; however, there is no clear pattern in its dynamics. Functional gene analysis of MAGs revealed numerous metabolic profiles associated with leaf litter degradation. This highlights the diverse metabolic capabilities of microbial communities and their implications for ecosystem processes, including the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during organic matter decomposition. This study provides important advances in understanding of ecosystem processes and the carbon cycle, underscoring the need to unravel the intricacies of microbial communities within these contexts. Boreal forests fix substantial amounts of atmospheric carbon (C). However, the timescales at which this C is cycled through the ecosystem are not yet well understood. To elucidate the temporal dynamics between photosynthesis, allocation and respiration, we assessed the radiocarbon (C14 ${}^{14}\mathrm{C}$) disequilibrium (D) between different C pools and the current atmosphere to understand the fate of C in a boreal forest ecosystem. Samples of vegetation, fungi, soil and atmospheric CO2 ${\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ were collected at the Integrated Carbon Observation System station Svartberget in northern Sweden. Additionally, we analyzed the Δ14 ${{\Delta }}^{14}$C‐CO2 ${\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ from incubated topsoil and forest floor soil respiration (FFSR) collected over a 24‐hr cycle, and calculated the Δ14 ${{\Delta }}^{14}$C signature of the total ecosystem respiration (Re) using the Miller‐Tans method. We found that vegetation pools presented a positive D enriched with bomb C14 ${}^{14}\mathrm{C}$, suggesting a fast‐cycling rate (months to years) for living biomass and intermediate (years to decades) for dead biomass. In contrast, mineral soils showed a negative D, indicating minimal incorporation of bomb C14 ${}^{14}\mathrm{C}$. FFSR showed diurnal Δ14 ${{\Delta }}^{14}$C variability (mean = 8.5‰), suggesting predominance of autotrophic respiration of recently fixed labile C. Calculations for Δ14 ${{\Delta }}^{14}$C in Re (median = 12.7‰) demonstrate the predominance of C fixed from days to decades. Although the boreal forest stores significant amounts of C, most of it is in the soil organic layer and the vegetation, where it is cycled relatively fast. Only minimal amounts of recent C are incorporated into the mineral soil over long timescales despite the current stocks in soils being relatively old. Plain Language Summary: Boreal forests play a key role as an alternative to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2 ${\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$) from the atmosphere and mitigate climate change. However, there is uncertainty on where this CO2 ${\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ is stored and the timescales at which it remains. To understand this, we studied the fate of the atmospheric CO2 ${\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ since the beginning of the nuclear era (1950s) by measuring the radiocarbon content of vegetation, fungi, soil, forest floor soil respiration and atmospheric air from a boreal forest stand in northern Sweden. We found that vegetation stores carbon from months (in leaves and moss) to decades (in litter layer and wood debris), while the soil organic layer presented carbon even older than a century. In contrast, mineral soils contained little recent carbon along with low content of organic carbon. The analysis of FFSR revealed that carbon comes mainly from recently fixed carbon, while the overall ecosystem respiration reflected a mix of carbon sources, ranging from days to decades. Overall, the boreal forest stores substantial amounts of carbon, but most of it moves relatively fast through the ecosystem. Only a small amount of new carbon is added to the mineral soil where it remains for long timescales. Heterobasidion root rot causes severe problems in the coniferous dominated forests of Northern hemisphere by decreasing timber value, reducing tree growth and making trees prone to other disturbance agents such as wind and bark beetles. According to current practices an infected stand is protected by treating fresh stumps at final cutting and generating the stand with tree species other than the host to reduce the current infection levels. However, prevailing guidelines do not provide instructions how to manage the neighbouring stands around the already infected stand. In contrast to earlier studies, we expand the analysis to an entity (a landscape) consisting of both infected and uninfected stands so that stand establishment of uninfected area is taken into account, too. The objective of the study is to optimize stand establishment of the uninfected area so that the revenue losses are simultaneously minimized when the average carbon storage is maximized within the whole landscape (infected + uninfected). Our results demonstrate the complexity of Heterobasidion root rot management: the optimum stand establishment strategy differs depending on the geographic location and interest rate (i.e., yield on capital). Further, the results implicate that for successful fight against Heterobasidion root rot the magnitude of infected area as well as the severity of the infection need to be taken into account. SAR images with two polarizations show strong potential for mapping forest stock volume (FSV) combined with limited samples. However, accurately mapping FSV still presents challenges in selecting the optimal acquisition date to obtain the SAR images during specific phenological stages within the annual forest cycle (growth and dormant stages). To clarify the impacts of phenological stages within the annual cycle on FSV mapping, SAR images with various polarization models and bands (Sentinel-1(S), GaoFen-3(GF-3 (G)) and ALOS-2(A)) were acquired within the growth and dormant stages of an annual cycle in a boreal evergreen coniferous forest (Chinese pine) and a deciduous coniferous forest (Larch). Subsequently, single-band (G, S, and A) and multi-band combined alternative variable sets (A + G, A + S, S + G, and A + S + G) were extracted within the same stage, respectively. Finally, the forward selection approach was utilized in conjunction with four different models (MLR, KNN, RF, and SVR) to obtain the most suitable variable sets and generate FSV mapping. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between the intensity of backscattering coefficients and the phenological stages of the forest. Within the dormant stage, there was a significant decrease in the gaps of backscattering coefficients obtained from the same polarization compared to those within the growth stage. Furthermore, the results also revealed that more signals from inside the canopy could be detected during the dormant stage in both evergreen coniferous forests and deciduous coniferous forests. Subsequently, the accuracy in mapping FSV obtained from single-band SAR images within the dormant stage are slightly higher than that within the growth stage, and the accuracy was still significantly affected by both overestimation and underestimation. Moreover, the combined effects of different bands significantly improve the reliability of mapped FSV. The rRMSE values in four multi-band combinations ranged from 22.37% to 29.40% for Chinese pine forests and from 21.27% to 34.38% for Larch forests, and the optimal result was observed from combinations of A + S + G acquired within the dormant stage. It is confirmed that SAR signal and their sensitivity to FSV depends on the stages of forest annual growth cycle. In comparison to the growth period, dual-polarization SAR data acquired during the dormant stage is more suitable for estimating FSV in boreal forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the four plactic-like monoids that arise by taking the meets and joins of stalactic and taiga congruences. We obtain the combinatorial objects associated with the meet monoids, establishing Robinson–Schensted-like correspondences and giving extraction and iterative insertion algorithms for these objects. We then obtain results on the sizes of classes of words equal in plactic-like monoids, show that some of these monoids are syntactic, and characterise their equational theories. Deciduous fine woody debris (DFWD) is a common deadwood substrate type in boreal conifer-dominated forests, but it is usually present in low volumes, and its importance for deadwood dependent biodiversity is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how DFWD-associated fungal and beetle diversity depends on local substrate availability and quality, and how species diversity differs between DFWD and coarse deciduous deadwood (birch logs) in boreal mixed spruce-dominated forests in southern Finland. We studied 25 forest plots (each 0.16 ha), measuring and sampling all pieces of DFWD with a diameter of 2–5 cm and minimum length of 50 cm. Wood-inhabiting fungi were surveyed from wood samples by DNA metabarcoding and saproxylic beetles were surveyed by bark sieving. Our results showed a clear positive relationship between DFWD abundance and the diversity of fungi and beetles. Tree species and decay class diversity were not important in explaining fungal and beetle diversity or community composition, possibly due to low degree of variation in DFWD quality among the study plots. DFWD hosted more diverse fungal assemblages than birch logs, including species of conservation concern, while no red-listed beetle species were observed on DFWD. Overall, species assemblages associated with fine and coarse deciduous deadwood were non-nested. Thus, DFWD represents a non-redundant complementary deadwood resource type alongside coarse deciduous deadwood in boreal forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the dynamics of δ13C and δ18O in modern resin is crucial for interpreting (sub)fossilized resin records and resin production dynamics. We measured the δ13C and δ18O offsets between resin acids and their precursor molecules in the top‐canopy twigs and breast‐height stems of mature Pinus sylvestris trees. We also investigated the physiological and environmental signals imprinted in resin δ13C and δ18O at an intra‐seasonal scale. Resin δ13C was c. 2‰ lower than sucrose δ13C, in both twigs and stems, likely due to the loss of 13C‐enriched C‐1 atoms of pyruvate during isoprene formation and kinetic isotope effects during diterpene synthesis. Resin δ18O was c. 20‰ higher than xylem water δ18O and c. 20‰ lower than δ18O of water‐soluble carbohydrates, possibly caused by discrimination against 18O during O2‐based diterpene oxidation and 35%–50% oxygen atom exchange with water. Resin δ13C and δ18O recorded a strong signal of soil water potential; however, their overall capacity to infer intraseasonal environmental changes was limited by their temporal, within‐tree and among‐tree variations. Future studies should validate the potential isotope fractionation mechanisms associated with resin synthesis and explore the use of resin δ13C and δ18O as a long‐term proxy for physiological and environmental changes. Research into various bacterial pathogens that can be transmitted between different animals and may have zoonotic potential has led to the discovery of different strains of Bartonella sp. in bats and their associated ectoparasites. Despite their enormous species diversity, only a few studies have focussed on the detection of bacterial pathogens in insectivorous bats of boreal forests and their associated Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae mites. We collected and molecularly analysed mite samples from forest‐dwelling bat species distributed all along the boreal belt of the Palearctic, from Central Europe to Far East. Ectoparasitic mites were pooled for DNA extraction and DNA amplification polymerase chain reaction (PCRs) were conducted to detect the presence of various bacterial (Anaplasmataceae, Bartonella sp., Rickettsia sp., Mycoplasma sp.) and protozoal (Hepatozoon sp.) pathogens. Bartonella sp. DNA was detected in four different mite species (Macronyssidae: Steatonyssus periblepharus and Spinturnicidae: Spinturnix acuminata, Sp. myoti and Sp. mystacinus), with different prevalences of the targeted gene (gltA, 16‐23S ribosomal RNA intergenic spacer and ftsZ). Larger pools (>5 samples pooled) were more likely to harbour Bartonella sp. DNA, than smaller ones. In addition, cave‐dwelling bat hosts and host generalist mite species are more associated with Bartonella spp. presence. Spinturnicidae mites may transmit several distinct Bartonella strains, which cluster phylogenetically close to Bartonella species known to cause diseases in humans and livestock. Mites with ubiquitous presence may facilitate the long‐term maintenance (and even local recurrence) of Bartonella‐infestations inside local bat populations, thus acting as continuous reservoirs for Bartonella spp in bats.
