3D human pose estimation aims to reconstruct the human skeleton of all the individuals in a scene by detecting several body joints. The creation of accurate and efficient methods is required for several real-world applications including animation, human-robot interaction, surveillance systems or sports, among many others. However, several obstacles such as occlusions, random camera perspectives, or the scarcity of 3D labelled data, have been hampering the models' performance and limiting their deployment in real-world scenarios. The higher availability of cameras has led researchers to explore multi-view solutions due to the advantage of being able to exploit different perspectives to reconstruct the pose. Thus, the goal of this survey is to present an overview of the methodologies used to estimate the 3D pose in multi-view settings, understand what were the strategies found to address the various challenges and also, identify their limitations. Based on the reviewed articles, it was possible to find that no method is yet capable of solving all the challenges associated with the reconstruction of the 3D pose. Due to the existing trade-off between complexity and performance, the best method depends on the application scenario. Therefore, further research is still required to develop an approach capable of quickly inferring a highly accurate 3D pose with bearable computation cost. Contrastive Analysis (CA) regards the problem of identifying patterns in images that allow distinguishing between a background (BG) dataset (i.e. healthy subjects) and a target (TG) dataset (i.e. unhealthy subjects). Recent works on this topic rely on variational autoencoders (VAE) or contrastive learning strategies to learn the patterns that separate TG samples from BG samples in a supervised manner. However, the dependency on target (unhealthy) samples can be challenging in medical scenarios due to their limited availability. Also, the blurred reconstructions of VAEs lack utility and interpretability. In this work, we redefine the CA task by employing a self-supervised contrastive encoder to learn a latent representation encoding only common patterns from input images, using samples exclusively from the BG dataset during training, and approximating the distribution of the target patterns by leveraging data augmentation techniques. Subsequently, we exploit state-of-the-art generative methods, i.e. diffusion models, conditioned on the learned latent representation to produce a realistic (healthy) version of the input image encoding solely the common patterns. Thorough validation on a facial image dataset and experiments across three brain MRI datasets demonstrate that conditioning the generative process of state-of-the-art generative methods with the latent representation from our self-supervised contrastive encoder yields improvements in the generated image quality and in the accuracy of image classification. Concept-based models naturally lend themselves to the development of inherently interpretable skin lesion diagnosis, as medical experts make decisions based on a set of visual patterns of the lesion. Nevertheless, the development of these models depends on the existence of concept-annotated datasets, whose availability is scarce due to the specialized knowledge and expertise required in the annotation process. In this work, we show that vision-language models can be used to alleviate the dependence on a large number of concept-annotated samples. In particular, we propose an embedding learning strategy to adapt CLIP to the downstream task of skin lesion classification using concept-based descriptions as textual embeddings. Our experiments reveal that vision-language models not only attain better accuracy when using concepts as textual embeddings, but also require a smaller number of concept-annotated samples to attain comparable performance to approaches specifically devised for automatic concept generation., Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE ISBI 2024

Early detection of melanoma is crucial for preventing severe complications and increasing the chances of successful treatment. Existing deep learning approaches for melanoma skin lesion diagnosis are deemed black-box models, as they omit the rationale behind the model prediction, compromising the trustworthiness and acceptability of these diagnostic methods. Attempts to provide concept-based explanations are based on post-hoc approaches, which depend on an additional model to derive interpretations. In this paper, we propose an inherently interpretable framework to improve the interpretability of concept-based models by incorporating a hard attention mechanism and a coherence loss term to assure the visual coherence of concept activations by the concept encoder, without requiring the supervision of additional annotations. The proposed framework explains its decision in terms of human-interpretable concepts and their respective contribution to the final prediction, as well as a visual interpretation of the locations where the concept is present in the image. The remarkable success of deep learning has prompted interest in its application to medical imaging diagnosis. Even though state-of-the-art deep learning models have achieved human-level accuracy on the classification of different types of medical data, these models are hardly adopted in clinical workflows, mainly due to their lack of interpretability. The black-box-ness of deep learning models has raised the need for devising strategies to explain the decision process of these models, leading to the creation of the topic of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). In this context, we provide a thorough survey of XAI applied to medical imaging diagnosis, including visual, textual, example-based and concept-based explanation methods. Moreover, this work reviews the existing medical imaging datasets and the existing metrics for evaluating the quality of the explanations. In addition, we include a performance comparison among a set of report generation-based methods. The increasing popularity of attention mechanisms in deep learning algorithms for computer vision and natural language processing made these models attractive to other research domains. In healthcare, there is a strong need for tools that may improve the routines of the clinicians and the patients. Naturally, the use of attention-based algorithms for medical applications occurred smoothly. However, being healthcare a domain that depends on high-stake decisions, the scientific community must ponder if these high-performing algorithms fit the needs of medical applications. With this motto, this paper extensively reviews the use of attention mechanisms in machine learning (including Transformers) for several medical applications. This work distinguishes itself from its predecessors by proposing a critical analysis of the claims and potentialities of attention mechanisms presented in the literature through an experimental case study on medical image classification with three different use cases. These experiments focus on the integrating process of attention mechanisms into established deep learning architectures, the analysis of their predictive power, and a visual assessment of their saliency maps generated by post-hoc explanation methods. This paper concludes with a critical analysis of the claims and potentialities presented in the literature about attention mechanisms and proposes future research lines in medical applications that may benefit from these frameworks., Comment: Pre-print submitted to Nature Scientific Reports

Homer Legacy software is a well-known software for simulation of small hybrid systems that can be used for both design and research. This dataset is a set of files generated by Homer Legacy bringing the simulation results of hybrid energy systems over the last seven years, as a consequence of the research work led by Dr. Alexandre Beluco, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. The data correspond to thirty papers published in the last seven years. Two of them describe hydro PV hybrid systems with photovoltaic panels operating on the water surface of reservoirs. One of these twelve papers suggests the model-ing of hydropower plants with reservoirs and the other the modeling of pumped hydro stor-age, and a third still uses these models in a place that could receive both the two types of hy-droelectric power plant. The other simulated hybrid systems include wind turbines, diesel generators, batteries, among other components. This data article describes the files that inte-grate this dataset and the papers that have been published presenting the hybrid systems under study and discussing the results. Cancer is still one of the most devastating diseases of our time. One way of automatically classifying tumor samples is by analyzing its derived molecular information (i.e., its genes expression signatures). In this work, we aim to distinguish three different types of cancer: thyroid, skin, and stomach. For that, we compare the performance of a Denoising Autoencoder (DAE) used as weight initialization of a deep neural network. Although we address a different domain problem in this work, we have adopted the same methodology of Ferreira et al.. In our experiments, we assess two different approaches when training the classification model: (a) fixing the weights, after pre-training the DAE, and (b) allowing fine-tuning of the entire classification network. Additionally, we apply two different strategies for embedding the DAE into the classification network: (1) by only importing the encoding layers, and (2) by inserting the complete autoencoder. Our best result was the combination of unsupervised feature learning through a DAE, followed by its full import into the classification network, and subsequent fine-tuning through supervised training, achieving an F1 score of 98.04% +/- 1.09 when identifying cancerous thyroid samples., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures (each one with 6 sub-figures), 2 tables. Developing autonomous assistants to help with domestic tasks is a vital topic in robotics research. Among these tasks, garment folding is one of them that is still far from being achieved mainly due to the large number of possible configurations that a crumpled piece of clothing may exhibit. Research has been done on either estimating the pose of the garment as a whole or detecting the landmarks for grasping separately. However, such works constrain the capability of the robots to perceive the states of the garment by limiting the representations for one single task. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end deep learning model named GarmNet that is able to simultaneously localize the garment and detect landmarks for grasping. The localization of the garment represents the global information for recognising the category of the garment, whereas the detection of landmarks can facilitate subsequent grasping actions. We train and evaluate our proposed GarmNet model using the CloPeMa Garment dataset that contains 3,330 images of different garment types in different poses. The experiments show that the inclusion of landmark detection (GarmNet-B) can largely improve the garment localization, with an error rate of 24.7% lower. Knee injuries are frequent, varied and often require the patient to undergo intensive rehabilitation for several months. Treatment protocols usually contemplate some recurrent measurements in order to assess progress, such as goniometry. The need for specific equipment or the complexity and duration of these tasks cause them to often be neglected. A novel deep learning based solution is presented, supported by the generation of a synthetic image dataset. A 3D human-body model was used for this purpose, simulating a recovering patient. For each image, the coordinates of three key points were registered: the centers of the thigh, the knee and the lower leg. These values are sufficient to estimate the flexion angle. Convolutional neural networks were then trained for predicting these six coordinates. Transfer learning was used with the VGG16 and InceptionV3 models pre-trained on the ImageNet dataset, being an additional custom model trained from scratch. All models were tested with different combinations of data augmentation techniques applied on the training sets.
