In pursuit of sustainable protein sources, the agricultural sector and emerging edible insect industry intersect in the valorization of agricultural by-products. Establishing a mutually beneficial relationship involves utilizing agricultural by-products as feeding substrates for insect farming, potentially enhancing the sustainability of both sectors. In the present study, by-products from beer, rice, oat, maize, sunflower, and lucerne, as well as mill residues and spent mushroom substrate from the regions of Thessaly and Central Macedonia (Greece) were investigated as nutritional sources for the larvae of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). Results show that the suitability of the tested by-products for rearing T. molitor larvae varies greatly, with larvae surviving better in some by-products than in others. The highest survival rate and the highest weight of larvae were recorded for larvae reared on rice bran, spent grains, and oat by-products. Similarly, high feed conversion and growth rate were observed when the larvae were fed with rice bran and spent grains. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of leadership styles on strategic leadership, as well as the integration and commitment to a change plan within a hospital environment. METHOD A quantitative study was conducted to measure the impact of leadership styles on the following factors: (a) strategic leadership, (b) integration of change, and (c) commitment to change. The research sample consisted of 280 employees working in general hospitals located in the area of Thessalia, Greece. The questionnaire used included several tools to measure the variables mentioned above. RESULTS The research revealed that the transformational leadership style's idealized influence and inspirational motivation characteristics were the most frequently adopted, while the passive laissez-faire style was the least utilized. Furthermore, the findings of this study showed a positive connection between both transactional and transformational leadership styles with the factors of strategic leadership, integration of change, and commitment to change. In contrast, the laissezfaire style exhibited a negative relationship with the variables of strategic leadership, integration of change, and commitment to change. CONCLUSIONS Effective leadership plays a crucial role in managing a health institute and successfully implementing a strategic organizational change plan. Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) production faces challenges due to shifting environmental conditions, potentially leading to a transition towards cooler or highland Mediterranean environments. This study assessed the responses of five lentil genotypes across five diverse locations (L1–L5) managed under organic cropping systems over two seasons, focusing on key parameters including seed yield (SY), crude protein (CP), cooking time (CT), seed loss percentage (SL), and yield loss per hectare (YL) caused by bruchid (Bruchus sp.). Excessive seasonal rainfall (500 mm), low winter temperatures (−17.9 °C), bruchid SL, and spring sowing were identified as crucial, particularly in challenging environments like highlands. Genotype selection was highlighted as essential for balancing yield and stability, with the small-seeded cultivar 'Dimitra' demonstrating lower YL due to bruchid. Additionally, increased CP was noted in response to heightened bruchid infestations. Specific recommendations were proposed for different environments: In productive lowland areas with low bruchid pressure and high CTs (L1), prioritizing cultivars like 'Samos', 'Dimitra', and 'Thessalia' enhances quality. Locations with high bruchid populations (L4) were not favored organic production but can serve as genetic resistance screening sites. High-elevation environments (L3, L5) proved significantly less productive, underscoring the requirement for earlier and winter-hardy cultivars. Storm Daniel initiated on 3 September 2023, over the Northeastern Aegean Sea, causing extreme rainfall levels for the following four days, reaching an average of about 360 mm over the Peneus basin, in Thessaly, Central Greece. This event led to extensive floods, with 17 human lives lost and devastating environmental and economic impacts. The automatic water-monitoring network of the HIMIOFoTS National Research Infrastructure captured the evolution of the phenomenon and the relevant hydrometeorological (rainfall, water stage, and discharge) measurements were used to analyse the event's characteristics. The results indicate that the average rainfall's return period was up to 150 years, the peak flow close to the river mouth reached approximately 1950 m3/s, and the outflow volume of water to the sea was 1670 hm3. The analysis of the observed hydrographs across Peneus also provided useful lessons from the flood-engineering perspective regarding key modelling assumptions and the role of upstream retentions. Therefore, extending and supporting the operation of the HIMIOFoTS infrastructure is crucial to assist responsible authorities and local communities in reducing potential damages and increasing the socioeconomic resilience to natural disasters, as well as to improve the existing knowledge with respect to extreme flood-simulation approaches. Simple Summary: Climate change and conflicts are making disasters involving animals' health more common. We studied how the Greek media covered the major flood in Thessaly, September 2023. We looked at how people felt about animal health and disease risks. This study found that crisis plans did not focus enough on animals and on communication. Our research also showed that (i) people rely on each other for health information rather than experts during a crisis, and (ii) media often sensationalize animal deaths. This highlights the need for better crisis management (with the use of social media listening tools) in veterinary education and practices to handle disasters. Due to the increasing risk of extreme events caused by climate change (i.e., floods, fires and hurricanes) or wars, European veterinary public health may need some improvement. Utilizing a mix of qualitative (participatory observation) and quantitative methods (Internet mining), we analyzed the Greek media's responses to the millennial flood in Thessaly (September 2023), focusing on animal health (including wild, companion animals and livestock) and public sentiment towards epizootic/epidemic threats. The study revealed a gap in crisis management plans regarding veterinary-related issues, emphasizing the need for comprehensive emergency response strategies. Our findings show how (i) the lay referral system is projecting the perception of epidemic threats into the population; (ii) the emotional load of images of animal carcasses is misused by media creators aiming for a big audience; and (iii) pets' owners are creating online communities for the searching and treatment of their pets. Our results stress the importance of integrating crisis communication in consecutive phases of the discourse, such as the following: (i) weather change; (ii) acute flood; (iii) recovery; and (iv) outbreaks, into veterinary practices to better prepare for such disasters. Storm 'Daniel' caused the most severe flood phenomenon that Greece has ever experienced, with thousands of hectares of farmland submerged for days. This led to sediment deposition in the inundated areas, which significantly altered the chemical properties of the soil, as revealed by extensive soil sampling and laboratory analysis. The causal relationships between the soil chemical properties and sediment deposition were extracted using the DirectLiNGAM algorithm. The results of the causality analysis showed that the sediment deposition affected the CaCO3 concentration in the soil. Also, causal relationships were identified between CaCO3 and the available phosphorus (P-Olsen), as well as those between the sediment deposit depth and available manganese. The quantified relationships between the soil variables were then used to generate data using a Multiple Linear Perceptron (MLP) regressor for various levels of deposit depth (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm). Then, linear regression equations were fitted across the different levels of deposit depth to determine the effect of the deposit depth on CaCO3, P, and Mn. The results revealed quadratic equations for CaCO3, P, and Mn as follows: 0.001XCaCO32 + 0.08XCaCO3 + 6.42, 0.004XP2 − 0.26XP + 12.29, and 0.003XMn2 − 0.08XMn + 22.47, respectively. The statistical analysis indicated that corn growing in soils with a sediment over 10 cm requires a 31.8% increase in the P rate to prevent yield decline. The assessment of cropland carbon and nitrogen (C and N) balances plays a key role in identifying cost-effective mitigation measures to combat climate change and reduce environmental pollution. In this paper, a biogeochemical modelling approach is adopted to assess all C and N fluxes in a regional cropland ecosystem of Thessaly, Greece. Additionally, the estimation and quantification of the modelling uncertainty in the regional inventory are realized through the propagation of parameter distributions through the model, leading to result distributions for modelling estimations. The model was applied to a regional dataset of approximately 1000 polygons, deploying model initializations and crop rotations for the five major crop cultivations and for a time span of 8 years. The full statistical analysis on modelling results (including the uncertainty ranges given as ± values) yields for the C balance carbon input fluxes into the soil of 12.4 ± 1.4 t C ha -1 yr -1 and output fluxes of 11.9 ± 1.3 t C ha -1 yr -1 , with a resulting average carbon sequestration of 0.5 ± 0.3 t C ha -1 yr -1. The averaged N influx was 212.3 ± 9.1 kg N ha -1 yr -1 , while outfluxes of 198.3 ± 11.2 kg N ha -1 yr -1 were estimated on average. The net N accumulation into the soil nitrogen pools was estimated to be 14.0 ± 2.1 kg N ha -1 yr -1. The N outflux consists of gaseous N fluxes composed of N 2 O emissions of 2.6 ± 0.8 kg N 2 O–N ha -1 yr -1 , NO emissions of 3.2 ± 1.5 kg NO–N ha -1 yr -1 , N 2 emissions of 15.5 ± 7.0 kg N 2 –N ha -1 yr -1 and NH 3 emissions of 34.0 ± 6.7 kg NH 3 –N ha -1 yr -1 , as well as aquatic N fluxes (only nitrate leaching into surface waters) of 14.1 ± 4.5 kg NO 3 –N ha -1 yr -1 and N fluxes of N removed from the fields in yields, straw and feed of 128.8 ± 8.5 kg N ha -1 yr -1. This study presents the projected future evolution of water resource balance and nitrate pollution under various climate change scenarios and climatic models using a holistic approach. The study area is Almyros Basin and its aquifer system, located in Central Greece, Thessaly, Greece. Almyros Basin is a coastal agricultural basin and faces the exacerbation of water deficit and groundwater nitrate pollution. Using an Integrated Modeling System (IMS), which consists of the surface hydrology model (UTHBAL), the nitrate leachate model (REPIC, an R-ArcGIS-based EPIC model), the groundwater hydrology model (MODFLOW), and the nitrates' advection, dispersion, and transport model (MT3MDS), the projected values of the variables of water quantity and quality are simulated. Nineteen climatic models from the Med-CORDEX database were bias-corrected with the Quantile Empirical Mapping method and employed to capture the variability in the simulated surface and groundwater water balance and nitrate dynamics. The findings indicate that future precipitation, runoff, and groundwater recharge will decrease while temperature and potential evapotranspiration will increase. Climate change will lead to reduced nitrogen leaching, lower groundwater levels, and persistent nitrate pollution; however, it will be accompanied by high variability and uncertainty, as simulations of IMS under multiple climatic models indicate. Introduction: Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) account for about 70% of infections in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In recent years, pan-drug resistant (PDR) strains, strains that are not susceptible to any antibiotic, have been emerged and new treatment strategies are required. Results: Fifty eligible patients were recruited in the three groups. A statistically significant reduction in the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score was observed in the control group on day 4 in comparison to day 0 of VAP (p = 0.005). The Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) was also reduced on day 4 (p = 0.0016) and day 7 in comparison to day 0 (p = 0.001). Patients that received combination therapy, CAZ–AVI + ATM and DCT, presented with a lower SOFA score and CPIS on day 7 in comparison to day 0 (p = 0.0288 and p = 0.037, respectively). No differences in the ΔSOFA score and ΔCPIS were found between the groups. The control group presented with a significantly lower ICU stay and duration of mechanical ventilation (p = 0.03 and p = 0.02, respectively). There was no difference in mortality. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective analysis. This study was conducted in a mixed ICU in the University Hospital of Larissa, Thessaly, Greece during a three-year period (2020-2022). Patients suffering from ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) due to carbapenem-resistant K. pneumonia (CR-KP) were divided in three different groups: the first one was treated using ceftazidime–avibactam plus aztreonam (CAZ–AVI + ATM group), the second was treated using double carbapenems (DCT group), and the last one (control group) received appropriate therapy since the strain was susceptible in vitro to at least to one antibiotic. Conclusions: Treatment with CAZ–AVI +ATM or DCT may offer a clinical benefit in patients suffering with infections due to PDR K. pneumoniae. Larger studies are required to confirm our findings. Shrew communities play a crucial role in a diverse range of natural, urban, and agricultural ecosystems. We used Barn owl diet analysis as the ideal proxy to assess small-mammal distribution patterns on large spatial scales. More than 10,000 pellets were analyzed from Thessaly, the largest agricultural prefecture located in central Greece. A total of more than 29,000 prey items were identified, one of the largest datasets used in similar analyses in Europe. Three discrete shrew species were present in Thessaly agricultural plains, central Greece (Güldenstädt's shrew Crocidura gueldenstaedtii, Bi-coloured shrew Crocidura leucodon, and Pygmy white-toothed shrew Suncus etruscus), which comprised a total of 7452 shrews, representing 25.64% of the total small-mammals' dataset. C. gueldenstaedtii and S. etruscus demonstrated strong associations with heavy argillaceous-clay soils and Vertisol soil types, whereas S. etruscus was also associated with non-irrigated land and non-intensive cultivated plots. C. leucodon demonstrated no significant associations to any environmental gradient and demonstrated habitat plasticity, most possibly shaped by existing resources and competition. Our study highlights the important insights gained from Barn owl diet analysis in respect of small-mammal assemblages on broad geographical scales, and the inclusion of soil parameters as drivers of habitat suitability and distribution patterns for small-mammal responses. The Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni is a small migratory falcon, foraging in areas covered by relatively low vegetation. In the Thessalian Plain, Central Greece, it feeds mainly on large Orthoptera and Coleoptera, and is characterized by an opportunistic feeding strategy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the composition of the Lesser Kestrel diet in the Thessalian plain. Systematic visits to two large representative colonies of the Lesser Kestrel in the study area were performed, in order to collect pellets during 2014 and 2015 breeding and post breeding periods of the species. Pellet analysis indicated that Orthoptera and Coleoptera were the main prey categories, which seem to have been the most specialized and dominant feeding choices of the species in the study area, while all other prey categories were rare and not specialized. Lesser Kestrel relied its diet on Orthoptera (Tettigoniidae and Acrididae), mainly during the breeding and post breeding phases, while the feeding strategy of the species during these two phases can be characterized as opportunistic. On the contrary, prior to the breeding phase, main prey category of the species in the study area was Coleoptera (Carabidae and Scarabaeidae). Moreover, a narrower niche breadth of the species based on Levins' index, was recorded during the breeding phase for both years of the study, indicating that the species restricted the variety of the diet during this phase. Leaf manganese (Mn) concentration has been used as a proxy for root exudation and phosphorus (P) uptake under controlled conditions, but there are limited field studies that confirm its validity. On an alkaline, P-poor soil, four lentil cultivars ('Samos', 'Thessaly', 'Flip', 'Algeria') received two P rates (0 and 26.2 kg P ha−1), for two growing seasons, to study whether aboveground assessments [leaf P, Mn, phenolic concentration (TPhe)] can approximate rhizosphere physiological traits related to P acquisition [soil acidification (ΔpH), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonisation, acid phosphatase activity (APase)]. Phosphorus addition had no effect on the determined traits. Cultivars differed in leaf P, Mn, TPhe and AMF, but there was no clear pattern relating aboveground traits to rhizosphere traits related to P acquisition, thus not confirming that leaf Mn can be a proxy of root exudation. Of three growth stages [V 7–8, R1 (first bloom), R4 (flat pod)], R1 seemed to be critical, showing the highest leaf P, ΔpH, AMF and TPhe. Precipitation and temperatures over the growing season were determinants of lentil responses affecting rhizosphere activity, soil P availability and finally leaf traits. In conclusion, in lentil on alkaline and P-limiting soils, high leaf Mn and phenolic concentration are not reliable indicators of rhizosphere P-acquiring mechanisms. In four lentil cultivars, under two phosphorus (P) levels (0 and 26.2 kg P ha−1), in an alkaline, P-poor soil, rhizosphere physiological traits related to P acquisition mechanisms and putative leaf proxies (P, manganese and phenolic concentration) were assessed. Our results indicated that the soil–root complexity in phosphorus acquisition mechanisms cannot be assessed by a single rhizosphere trait nor approximated by a single leaf trait. Thessaly's importance in the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, within the framework of the study of medieval Greek history in the final phase of the later Byzantine period (1204–1461/1479), warrants its bibliographical promotion, so to speak, as well as its placement alongside the other Byzantine exiled states of the post-1204 period, that is, those of the Lascarids of Nicaea (1204–1261), the Angeli-Ducae-Comneni of Ep(e)irus (1204/1205–1348/1449/1479), the Grand Comneni of Trebizond (1204–1461), as well as the Cantacuzeni and the Palaeologi of the later Despotate of the Morea/Mystras (1262/1348–1460/1461), while the early (thirteenth-century) history of this Thessalian Byzantine "state" should be studied on a parallel basis with that of the Latin Empire of Constantinople ("Romania": 1204–1261) and the other major by-product of the Fourth Crusade, that is, the Latin/Lombard Kingdom of Thessalonica (1204/1207–1224). The conservation of natural resources is indispensable for supporting sustainable development. Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystem (WEFE) nexus management is widely acknowledged as the utmost priority of our time. Considering the specificities of the different nexus sectors, conflicting views of sustainability may arise from different stakeholders. This paper presents and analyses an effective stakeholders' participation strategy aiming at identifying WEFE challenges in the Pinios River Basin (PRB), the most agriculturally productive and natural resource-stressed basin of Greece. The presented methodology was developed in the context of a Learning and Action Alliance (LAA) scheme adopted by the H2020 REXUS project, intended to support resilient nexus system management with the engagement of stakeholders. The proposed comprehensive methodology comprises multiple phases, including "framing", "mapping", "involvement", "co-production", and "sharing" phases. The involvement phase is the most interactive one, including the organisation and outputs of efficient crowdsourcing theme sessions organised in the framework of the first REXUS PRB stakeholders' workshop. This paper illustrates and analyses stakeholders' perceptions regarding nexus status in the PRB and reveals the most critical challenges in the pilot basin, along with their interdependencies and correlations. The determination of nexus challenges insights by stakeholders could significantly contribute to redefining policies so that they align with sustainable development aims. On 3 March 2021, an important seismic sequence started in northern Thessaly, Greece. The Damasi Seismic Sequence (DSS) deformed the western sector of the Tyrnavos Graben, which includes a major blind normal fault and the Titarisios River Graben (TRG). In this contribution, we provide fieldwork observations across the TRG and satellite radar interferometry of the faults controlling the graben. In addition, we provide a map of the active faults exposed in the TRG and palaeoseismological analyses of the Mesochori Fault, which together contribute to unravelling the seismic history of the area. DInSAR provides clear evidence of the Mesochori Fault surface rupture during the main shocks, while our palaeoseismological analyses document a long seismic history of the fault, with a mean recurrence interval of 1.0–1.5 ka and a mean slip per event of ~15 cm for the last four events reactivating the scarp. Quantitative geomorphological analyses based on real-time kinematic (RTK) measurements with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers and data from UAV flight campaigns also provide evidence of postseismic activity across the Mesochori Fault. Based on these results showing that (at least) the Mesochori Fault has been reactivated several times in the latest Quaternary the seismotectonics of the TRG are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of atmospheric models and climate systems has been hampered by the restricted availability of wind profile measurements. By recording wind profiles in near real time and giving useful information for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, the Doppler wind lidar technology used in the European Space Agency's Aeolus mission is expected to unravel this problem. By analyzing the precipitation from IANOS medicane, which occurred over the Thessaly plain in September 2020, a case study utilizing the COSMO NWP model illustrates the potential usefulness of Aeolus data in strengthening NWP models. Run in hindcast mode and forced by analyses with and without Aeolus, the model assimilated data that were produced at the European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts (ECMWF). Evaluation against observations from Greek synoptic stations showed that the model precipitation using the Aeolus-assimilated data preponderated over the model results without their inclusion. This work aims to demonstrate the additional value of the Aeolus project towards the expansion of our knowledge of Earth's atmosphere, particularly the improvement of our capacity to estimate severe weather events via the use of Aeolus with NWP models. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between cesarean section and postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder as well as the factors that contribute to the development of posttraumatic symptoms in mothers. Materials and methods: A sample of 538 women who gave birth with emergency and elective cesarean section in a University Hospital of Thessaly, Greece, have consented to participate in a two-phase prospective study. A socio-demographic questionnaire, the stressor Criterion A, the Life Events Checklist and the Posttraumatic Checklist of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) were used to diagnose posttraumatic symptoms in Greek postpartum mothers. Results: Out of 538 mothers, 37.2% had an emergency cesarean section and the remaining 62.8% an elective one. Posttraumatic stress was seen in 26 (26%) of women with emergency surgery and three (3%) of those with elective surgery. The present study also found that the inclusion of a neonate to the NICU, complications during pregnancy and delivery, lack of breastfeeding and lack of support from the partner were strongly associated with the development of posttraumatic symptoms. Conclusions: The results of the current study indicate the need to take measures to reduce cesarean section rates and promote vaginal delivery. The high posttraumatic stress rates make it imperative to take additional measures for the mental health of women after cesarean section, especially in those with a traumatic birth experience. This paper examines, in parallel, two key archaeological material groups: the kilns and the ceramics from the exceptional tell site of Imvrou Pigadi, the first known and systematically excavated Middle Neolithic pottery workshop in Thessaly. The study forms an all-encompassing, material-based, and scientifically integrated framework based on macroscopic and microscopic analyses, including typological classification and geoarchaeology with an emphasis on micromorphology, as well as an examination of spatial organization. Direct and indirect evidence for standardization and specialization in technology and production practices points to advanced pyrotechnological knowledge and expertise in pottery manufacture at the site. Moreover, the paper examines the social interplay developed around pottery production by discussing cooperation and the organization of social space within the community. Overall, this analysis touches upon the discussion of the wider community of pottery manufacturing centers in Neolithic Thessaly and places the site within its cultural context, offering new insights into craftsmanship and social reciprocity. Bee-collected pollen (BCP) and the naturally fermented BCP product known as bee bread (BB) are functional foods renowned for their nutritious, antioxidant, antibacterial and other therapeutic properties. This is the first study employed to assess the antiviral activity of BCP and BB against influenza A virus (IAV) H1N1 along with their proteinaceous, aqueous and n-butanol fractions. Additionally, artificially fermented BCP has been evaluated against IAV (H1N1). Antiviral activity was assessed in vitro by comparative real-time PCR assay. IC50 values ranged from 0.022 to 10.04 mg/mL, and Selectivity Index (SI) values ranged from 1.06 to 338.64. Artificially fermented BCP samples AF5 and AF17 demonstrated higher SI values than unfermented BCP, and proteinaceous fractions demonstrated the highest SI values. The chemical profile of BCP and BB samples, analyzed using NMR and LC-MS, revealed the presence of specialized metabolites that may contribute toward the antiviral activity. Overall, the significant anti-IAV activity of BB and BCP harvested in Thessaly (Greece) could be attributed to chemical composition (especially undiscovered yet proteinaceous compounds) and possibly to microbiome metabolism. A risk analysis framework is proposed for the optimum remediation of a contaminated aquifer under hydrogeological uncertainty. The limited information and the spatial variation of hydraulic conductivity in a real-world large-scale aquifer create uncertain conditions for decision-making when remediation schemes ought to be accompanied by the minimum possibility of failure. The primary concern is focused on safeguarding public health when groundwater is used for urban drinking purposes from a contaminated aquifer. The proposed framework is based on the conjunctive use of stochastic simulation–optimization modelling followed up by a risk analysis application on remediation trade-offs. The framework includes three main steps/procedures: (i) the model formulation of multiple realizations of groundwater flow and contaminant transport, (ii) the optimal positioning and operation of the clean-up wells determined by the method of stochastic optimization, and (iii) the risk analysis of the optimum remediation strategies through a proposed decision model, so as the one with the minimum cost and risk of failure is chosen as the most appropriate. The proposed framework is tested for two scenarios of nitrogen fertilizer application in the cultivated areas. The strategic target is the groundwater nitrate concentration minimization in an area where exceedances of nitrate concentrations have been observed and water supply wells have been operating for the last twenty years satisfying domestic needs. The results demonstrate that, when decision-making is under hydrogeological uncertainty, the combined use of stochastic optimization and risk-based decision analysis can commend the remediation strategy with the minimum cost and the highest possibility of success. Floods are lethal and destructive natural hazards. The Mediterranean, including Greece, has recently experienced many flood events (e.g., Medicanes Zorbas and Ianos), while climate change results in more frequent and intense flood events. Accurate flood mapping in river areas is crucial for flood risk assessment, planning mitigation measures, protecting existing infrastructure, and sustainable planning. The accuracy of results is affected by all simplifying assumptions concerning the conceptual and numerical model implemented and the quality of geospatial data used (Digital Terrain Models—DTMs). The current research investigates flood modelling sensitivity against geospatial data accuracy using the following DTM resolutions in a mountainous river sub-basin of Thessaly's Water District (Greece): (a) open 5 m and (b) 2 m data from Hellenic Cadastre (HC) and (c) 0.05 m data from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) topographical mission. RAS-Mapper and HEC-RAS are used for 1D (steady state) hydraulic simulation regarding a 1000-year return period. Results include flood maps and cross section-specific flow characteristics. They are analysed in a graphical flood map-based empirical fashion, whereas a statistical analysis based on the correlation matrix and a more sophisticated Machine Learning analysis based on the interpretation of nonlinear relationships between input–output variables support and particularise the conclusions in a quantifiable manner. The assessment of cropland carbon and nitrogen (C & N) balances play a key role to identify cost effective mitigation measures to combat climate change and reduce environmental pollution. In this paper, a biogeochemical modelling approach is adopted to assess all C & N fluxes in a regional cropland ecosystem of Thessaly, Greece. Additionally, the estimation and quantification of the modelling uncertainty in the regional inventory are realized through the propagation of parameter distributions through the model leading to result distributions for modelling estimations. The model was applied on a regional dataset of approximately 1000 polygons deploying model initializations and crop rotations for the 5 major crop cultivations and for a timespan of 8 years. The full statistical analysis on modelling results yields for the C balance carbon input fluxes into the soil of 12.4 ± 1.4 tons C ha-1 yr-1 and output fluxes of 11.9 ± 1.3 tons C ha-1 yr-1, with a resulting average carbon sequestration of 0.5 ± 0.3 tons C ha-1 yr-1. The averaged N influx was 212.3 ± 9.1 kg N ha-1 yr-1 while outfluxes were estimated on average of 198.3 ± 11.2 kg N ha-1 yr-1. The net N accumulation into the soil nitrogen pools was estimated to 14.0 ± 2.1 kg N ha-1 yr-1. The N outflux consist of gaseous N fluxes composed by N2O emissions 2.6 ± 0.8 kg N2O-N ha-1 yr-1, NO emissions of 3.2 ± 1.5 kg NO-N ha-1 yr-1, N2 emissions 15.5 ± 7.0 kg N2-N ha-1 yr-1 and NH3 emissions of 34.0 ± 6.7 kg NH3-N ha-1 yr-1, as well as aquatic N fluxes (only nitrate leaching into surface waters) of 14.± 4.5 kg NO3-N ha-1 yr-1, N fluxes of N removed from the fields in yields, straw and feed of 128.8 ± 8.5 kg N ha-1 yr-1. Despite the rising awareness of the mutual benefits of pollination, agricultural production, and biodiversity, Greek planning has scarcely moved toward patterns of pollinator-friendly farm design models. This paper presents data from preliminary research analysis that defined generic landscape design models that can enhance the symbiotic associations between farming production and beekeeping in Greece. The main objective is to determine tailor-made landscape models that can contribute to a portfolio of actions easily apprehensible by non-technical audiences in the farming sector who want to introduce biodiversity enhancements to monoculture farming, fostering a safer, poisonous-free environment for introduced honeybees, simultaneously helping to augment their production yields. A preliminary study was conducted in four agricultural farming estates in Thessaly and the Peloponnese involving apple farming, citrus orchards, and hemp cultivation. It combined the analysis and assessment of land cover classes with regard to the provision of foraging habitat, assessment of foraging suitability, description of connectivity characteristics, and emerging spatial patterns of natural corridors, patches, and edges at an observation perimeter around each farm. Assessment of these data informed design models for planting enrichment and integration of natural patches, such as meadows and shrub corridors. Pilot installations of hives in study areas that combined characteristics of the landscape models presented resulted in the production of 8% to 12% bigger fruits and 30% to 50% increase in the total yield. We conclude that landscape design models for biodiversity enhancement are an important attribute of ecosystem services and require an understanding of specific geographical and landscape parameters to render models operational for bee farming and pollination. The dynamics created by the process of territorial construction are partly based on the selective and functional incorporation of heritage. However, in rural areas, retrospection presents particular difficulties due to a lack of appropriate information. Τhis research proposes the implementation of a methodology that combines sources, methods, and tools where the extraction of timeless information is based on the use of 3D interactive representations incorporating the active participation of actors and their collective memory. The proposed methodology strives for the compatibility, objectivity, and synergy of information from various sources and historical periods. The scope of this research concerns the mapping of the route and landscapes that were explored and described by the traveller Leake 210 years ago in the Farsala-Almyros area in Thessaly (Greece). The results focus on the reconstruction of the spatial subsystems of land use and exploitation at the beginning of the 19th century. The analysis reveals a production system, organized to use the laws of nature in order to sustainably manage the relationship between humans, animals, and natural resources. At the same time, the comparison with the current space has revealed a serious degradation in the natural environment since then. Finally, this mixed methodology, by combining the "spatialization" of information, virtuality and interactivity, the transition in time and space, and, finally, the "territorialization" of information, forms the basis for the inclusion of the history of places in the modern process of constructing a territorial area. The present study aims to assess the effect of four inorganic soil amendments, such as lime (CaCO3), red mud consisting of 75% hematite (Fe2O3), gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), and Al oxide (Al2O3), of an alkaline heavy metal–contaminated soil. For this purpose, a pot experiment was conducted by physically mixing individual six subsamples of a soil sample collected from Thessaly area with four inorganic soil amendments along with two leafy plants, spinach and lettuce. Al oxide causes the maximum reduction of the water-soluble Cu concentration, as its concentrations is no longer detectable. The Cu availability index decreases when aluminum oxide was used. The use of gypsum and red mud caused almost equal reduction while the smallest decrease was caused by the use of lime. The Zn availability index decreased equally when aluminum oxide and gypsum were mixed with the soil sample. The highest reduction of Cu and Zn transfer coefficient (TC) was observed when the Al2O3 was used. In spinach, Zn TC reduction was 39.8% and Cu TC reduction was 41.0%. In lettuce, the addition of Al2O3 led to Cu TC reduction of over 37.3% and Zn TC reduction of up to 38.7%. Generally, Al2O3 nanoparticles may function as suitable sorbents for the removal of Zn and Cu from soil samples, with an increasing effectiveness in spinach rather than lettuce. Liming materials seem to increase the soil alkalinity and promote the complexation of soluble heavy metals with hydroxide ions leading to immobilization of heavy metals in soil and reduce their amount in leafy vegetables. Remediation of contaminated soils is considered necessary to reduce environmental risks and to achieve the means available to increase agricultural production of safe and quality food. The teaching method of flipped classroom (FC), gives students the opportunity to participate actively during class, while the teacher's role is supportive than intrusive. The application of FC improves teaching and learning process, especially in applied sciences and technology, as literature study reveals. The current study aims to investigate the application of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) methodology, by applied sciences and technology teachers, who combine FC to improve learning results and better meet their teaching goals. To this end, we apply quantitative research, exploit, and discuss our data findings. A total number of 65 high school teachers, around the area of Central Greece, in the region of Thessaly, took part in our research. Our data is analyzed via Structural Equation Models (SEMs) which belong to a family of multivariable statistical analysis that refer to linear correlations among quantitative mainly variables, with confirmatory role. The results of our study reveal that social influence is significant for the prediction of teachers' intention (current of future) to apply flipped classroom model approach. Additionally, our study claims to support that flipped classroom model plays a crucial role in updating educational demands of the 21st century, especially in guaranteeing the use of technology tools in equally during teaching and learning process. Finally, this study may assist teachers to adjust and reinforce flipped classroom's approach, by distinguishing the technology acceptance factors inside a contemporary classroom. Historic school buildings, erected during the end of the 19th–beginning of the 20th century, represent a specific constructional type that should be encountered as part of the common European built heritage. They present various similarities, especially in the regions of S. Europe, even though they were mainly built with local materials following the traditional constructional principles of each area. Due to their constant function as educational units, there is an increased interest on their structural and energy integration, without, however, following the principles of restoration of historic structures. To this extent, the acknowledgement of the tangible and intangible values they encompass is crucial, as well as their enlistment in order to be treated as heritage assets. In this study, an effort has been made to testify the characteristics (historic, architectural, constructional) of the historic school buildings located in the Municipality of Agia, region of Thessaly, central Greece. A case study was selected, concerning the old elementary school of Megalovrysso, where a detailed investigation was implemented, including onsite inspection, architectural overview, determination of constructional materials and types, investigation of the preservation state, as well as structural analysis through the three-dimensional finite element model. All research data were comparatively evaluated in order to determine the principles governing the construction of the studied school buildings and establish the significance of this unrecognized part of European built heritage that should be further assessed. Simple Summary: Voles of the genus Microtus represent one of the most speciose mammalian genera in the Holarctic. Moreover, they are also widespread in the European agricultural landscape. In addition, they are the most common vertebrate pests in European agriculture, causing extensive annual damages to a large variety of crops and exposing humans to an increased risk of pathogen transmission. In order to propose mitigation and possible management measures, it is necessary to record the initial abundance and distribution patterns of vole species within complex ecosystems. Considering the large extensions occupied by agroecosystems and the demanding but small-scale application of live trapping, an optimal method to initiate small mammal monitoring on large spatial scales is through Barn Owl Tyto alba diet analysis. Barn Owls prey almost exclusively on small mammals and predominantly on voles; thus, they can be used as an ideal proxy for the distribution and abundance patterns of small mammals in the field. In our study, we studied the diet of Barn Owls over a total range of 3000 sq. km for two continuous years through pellet analysis (more than 10,000 pellets) and identified the distribution and abundance patterns of four vole species with respect to different environmental gradients. Voles are the most common vertebrate pests in European agriculture. Identifying their distribution and abundance patterns provides valuable information for future management. Barn Owl diet analysis is one of the optimum methods used to record small mammal distribution patterns on large spatial scales. From 2003 to 2005, a total of 10,065 Barn Owl pellets were collected and analyzed from 31 breeding sites in the largest agroecosystem in Greece, the Thessaly plains. A total of 29,061 prey items were identified, offering deep insight into small mammal distribution, specifically voles. Four discrete vole species (Harting's vole Microtus hartingi, East European vole Microtus levis, Thomas's pine vole Microtus thomasi, and Grey dwarf hamster Cricetulus migratorius) comprised 40.5% (11,770 vole prey items) of the total Barn Owl prey intake. The presence and abundance of the voles varied according to underlying environmental gradients, with soil texture and type playing a major role. M. levis showed no significant attachments to gradients, other than a mild increase in Mollisol soils. It was syntopic in all sites with M. hartingi, which was the dominant and most abundant small mammal species, preferring non-arable cultivated land, natural grasslands, set-aside fields, and fallow land. M. thomasi was strictly present in western Thessaly and strongly associated with a sandy-clay soil texture and Alfisol soils. C. migratorius was the least represented vole (162 items), exclusively present in eastern Thessaly and demonstrating a stronger association with cereals, Mollisol soils, and an argillaceous-clay soil texture. This is the first study in Greece at such a large spatial scale, offering insights for pest rodents' distribution in intensive agroecosystems and their response to environmental gradients including soil parameters. This paper presents the results of a study exploring the potential of magnetic-susceptibility and phosphate soil analyses to locate and characterize buried Neolithic settlements in Thessaly, Greece. Using the preliminary results of large-area magnetometer surveys, soil samples were collected at three well-known sites along exploratory lines and augers targeting the locations of possible features of interest, including habitational structures and enclosures. In our contribution, we will focus on the traces of the old Pre-Greek linguistics substratum in certain names of forts from Justinian's building program presented in the Procopius' Buildings (Περὶ κτισμάτων, De aedificiis). Actually, the Book IV of the panegyric features a description of fortifications, built and restored by the Emperor Justinian in the European territories. This is the most detailed book in the work, written with great care and completeness, most likely due to the fact that the danger of barbarian incursions in these areas was the greatest. In the paper we will present certain examples of place names which obviously contain remnants of relict languages as very important and valuable toponomastic evidence, typical for the broader area. We are going to inspect the etymology of the place names by Procopius attested as Λάρισσα, Γόμφοι, Λόσσονος, Πέλεκον, Χάραδρος and Βάβας. The article "The casuistic law in Leviticus, the new Marmarini inscription, and the festivals Eloulaia and Nisanaia" by Guy Darshan examines an extraordinary Greek inscription near Marmarini in Thessaly, Greece. The inscription contains instructions and regulations for ritual behavior in a temple and exhibits both Greek and Near Eastern characteristics. The author compares the inscription with the book of Leviticus and discusses the implications for understanding casuistic law and the development of priestly material in the Pentateuch. The inscription dates back to the late third or early second century BC and provides information about the festivals Nisanaia and Eloulaia, which trace their origins to Babylonian month names. The present-day hydrographic network of the Pinios River, Greece, clearly shows some major morphological and hydrographic anomalies documenting its complex evolution. A critical analysis and re-interpretation of geological and historical/modern topographic data clearly indicate an original subdivision of Thessaly into two separate endorheic hydrographic networks, Karditsa and Larissa realms. At different epochs, these two basins were partially covered by lake waters and/or marsh areas up to late Antiquity and locally/temporarily even in recent historical periods. The Piniada Valley is in between the two major (present-day) alluvial plains existing in Thessaly. The pre-infilling morphology of the valley bottom has been recently reconstructed suggesting it likely represented the lower reach of the Titarissios River draining into the Karditsa basin. These environmental-depositional conditions persisted up to Late Pleistocene when tectonic activity along the Tyrnavos and Larissa faults diverted the lower reach of this river into the Larissa area causing the abandonment of the Piniada Valley. Depending on the water discharge along the western Thessalian rivers and the consequent water level fluctuations of the Karditsa Lake, together with the gradual infilling of the basin, the Piniada Valley and especially its western sector was then largely affected by lacustrine-to-marshy conditions. This was also due to the lacking of a permanent hydrographic network draining the area. Indeed, the present-day Pinios River could form only after the prograding 'western' rivers completely infilled the Karditsa basin by generating a hydrographic network in the plain. Only in the latest stage of this process, the Piniada Valley was characterized by fluvial aggradation, causing the alluvial plain to expand eastwards finally reaching the altimetric threshold of the Kalamaki Gorge. The proactive sustainable management of scarce water across vulnerable agricultural areas of South Europe is a timely issue of major importance, especially under the recent challenges affecting complex water systems. The Basin District of Thessaly, Greece's driest rural region, has a long history of multiple issues of an environmental, planning, economic or administrative nature, as well as a history of conflict. For the first time, the region's key-stakeholders, including scientists and policymakers, participated in tactical meetings during the 19-month project "Water For Tomorrow". The goal was to establish a common and holistic understanding of the problems, assess the lessons learned from the failures of the past and co-develop a list of policy recommendations, placing them in the broader context of sustainability. These refer to enhanced and transparent information, data, accountability, cooperation/communication among authorities and stakeholders, capacity building, new technologies and modernization of current practices, reasonable demand and supply management, flexible renewable energy portfolios and circular approaches, among others. This work has significant implications for the integrated water resources management of similar south-European cases, including the Third-Cycle of the River Basin Management Plans and the International Sustainability Agendas. Future changes in drought characteristics in Greece were investigated using dynamically downscaled high-resolution simulations of 5 km. The Weather Research and Forecasting model simulations were driven by EC-EARTH output for historical and future periods, under Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5. For the drought analysis, the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI) were calculated. This work contributed to achieve an improved characterization of the expected high-resolution changes of drought in Greece. Overall, the results indicate that Greece will face severe drought conditions in the upcoming years, particularly under RCP8.5, up to 8/5 y of severity change signal. The results of 6-month timescale indices suggest that more severe and prolonged drought events are expected with an increase of 4 months/5 y, particularly in areas of central and eastern part of the country in near future, and areas of the western parts in far future. The indices obtained in a 12-month timescale for the period 2075–2099 and under RCP8.5 have shown an increase in the mean duration of drought events along the entire country. Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) are well-established systems for flood mapping, thanks to their high sensitivity towards water surfaces and their independence from daylight and cloud cover. Particularly able is the 2014-launched Copernicus Sentinel-1 C-band SAR mission, with its systematic monitoring schedule featuring global land coverage in a short revisit time and a 20 m ground resolution. Yet, variable environment conditions, low-contrasting land cover, and complex terrain pose major challenges to fully automated flood monitoring. To overcome these issues, and aiming for a robust classification, we formulate a datacube-based flood mapping algorithm that exploits the Sentinel-1 orbit repetition and a priori generated probability parameters for flood and non-flood conditions. A globally applicable flood signature is obtained from manually collected wind- and frost-free images. Through harmonic analysis of each pixel's full time series, we derive a local seasonal non-flood signal comprising the expected backscatter values for each day-of-year. From those predefined probability distributions, we classify incoming Sentinel-1 images by simple Bayes inference, which is computationally slim and hence suitable for near-real-time operations, and also yields uncertainty values. The datacube-based masking of no-sensitivity resulting from impeding land cover and ill-posed SAR configuration enhances the classification robustness. We employed the algorithm on a 6-year Sentinel-1 datacube over Greece, where a major flood hit the region of Thessaly in 2018. In-depth analysis of model parameters and sensitivity, and the evaluation against microwave and optical reference flood maps, suggest excellent flood mapping skill, and very satisfying classification metrics with about 96% overall accuracy and only few false positives. Two strong earthquakes hit Thessaly region on March 3rd, 2021 (Mw = 6.3) and on March 4th, 2021 (Mw = 6.1). The epicentres of the earthquakes were located at approximately 23 and 29 km respectively NW of Larissa, one of the most populous cities in Greece. Several aftershocks followed thereafter. Although no injuries were recorded, several structures suffered significant damage close to the epicentre, while some others collapsed. Approximately 300 residents of the village of Damasi were transferred to temporary settlements and tents. The event occurred during the COVID19 lockdown and created significant stress and disruption to residents. This paper focuses on the earthquake swarm itself as well as the damages observed in residential buildings, schools, and churches in the earthquake-stricken region. The earthquakes mainly impacted low-rise domestic masonry buildings, while the more modern reinforced concrete structures built following the recent seismic regulations were almost unaffected. The typology of buildings in the region, together with photographs demonstrating the extent of damage are presented herein. Despite the rather satisfactory performance of modern buildings in recent earthquakes in Greece, the preliminary investigations from the Thessaly Earthquakes showed that there is still a significant level of vulnerability in existing masonry building stock constructed using traditional methods and materials. This article takes Pertevniyal Valide Sultan's endowments as a case study and proposes an original contribution to the literature by discussing the transformation of Ottoman endowment management throughout the nineteenth century. The account books of landed estates (çiftlik s), other endowment documents, and the Ottoman imperial archives constitute the basis of explaining different phases of estate management practices for endowments in the Thessaly region of northern Greece. The main argument is that, in contrastto the administration of earlier endowments in the region, the central administration of Pertevniyal Valide Sultan's endowments expanded its control over its provincial revenue sources. This transformation became possible with the help of negotiations and alliances with several imperial and provincial institutions. Featured Application: The accuracy in long-term prediction of the performance of a photovoltaic (PV) park following several years of operation is essential for a number of reasons, including the extraction of reliable data for the economic analysis, the valid support of claims regarding PV panels' performance degradation and other issues. The specific work was motivated by the need to economically assess future investment in photovoltaic installations during an economic cycle with increasing interest rates. The monitoring data from the actual operation of a 100 kW PV park are employed in the refinement and validation of the prediction methodology. The results are applicable to the profitability analysis of future PV investments in the region of Thessaly. Increased penetration of grid-connected PV systems in modern electricity networks induces uncertainty factors to be considered from several different viewpoints, including the system's protection and management. Accurate short-term prediction of a grid-connected PV park's output is essential for optimal grid control and grid resilience. Out of the numerous types of models employed to this end during the last decade, artificial neural networks, (ANNs) have proven capable of handling the uncertainty issues of solar radiation. Insolation and ambient, or panel temperature, are most commonly employed as the independent variables, and the system's output power is successfully predicted within 3 to 5% error. In this paper, we apply a common type of ANN for the long-term prediction of a 100 kWp grid-connected PV park's output, by exploiting experimental data from the last 8 years of operation. Solar radiation and backsheet temperature were utilized for the ANN training stage. The performance metrics of this model, along with a standard linear regression model, are compared against the actual performance data. The capabilities of the ANN model are exploited in the effort to decouple the fluctuating effect of PV panel soiling which interferes with the efficiency degradation process. This innovative biological technology is further promoted at the European Union (EU) level by powerful institutions such as the Green Deal and the new CAP, mainly by tools such as ecoschemes and agri-environmental and climate measures (AECMs). The use of integrated regional spatiotemporal models, such as CLUE-S, to predict land use changes in the framework of Agroforestry is rather restricted. This paper examines Agroforestry as a vehicle that can contribute to achieving the rural development of the region of Thessaly, Greece. It sets a time horizon for reviewing the changes that are expected in the most important units of land uses of the rural landscape of the municipality of Mouzaki, western Thessaly plain, in the year 2040, which serves as model land for the region of Thessaly. It examines these changes with the effect of three (3) socio-economic scenarios: (a) a linear operating scenario (business as usual, BAU), (b) an ecological land protection (ELP) scenario, and (c) a rapid economic development (RED) scenario. These scenarios were introduced in the non-spatial module of the CLUE-S spatiotemporal model, while in the spatial module sixteen (16) characteristic landscape parameters were introduced as independent variables. The most important land use units, including traditional silvoarable and silvopastoral woodland systems, were the dependent variables. The simulations of the changes of the land use units showed that under the RED scenario, in the year 2040 the extent of the silvoarable systems is expected to increase significantly (57%) compared to the reference year of 2020, while the rest of the land use units under the other scenarios are mainly regulated by depopulation/abandonment of the rural areas and the processes of natural succession. The fact that the extent of silvoarable systems is increasing, in combination with the favorable institutional environment created by European rural policies, gives impetus to regional rural development through investments in the agricultural sector and mainly in Agroforestry systems. On 18 September 2020, the Karditsa prefecture of Thessaly region (Greece) experienced a catastrophic flood as a consequence of the IANOS hurricane. This intense phenomenon was characterized by rainfall records ranging from 220 mm up to 530 mm, in a time interval of 15 h. Extended public infrastructure was damaged and thousands of houses and commercial properties were flooded, while four casualties were recorded. The aim of this study was to provide forensic research on a reconstruction of the flood event in the vicinity of Karditsa city. First, we performed a statistical analysis of the rainfall. Then, we used two numerical models and observed data, either captured by satellites or mined from social media, in order to simulate the event a posteriori. Specifically, a rainfall–runoff CN-unit hydrograph model was combined with a hydrodynamic model based on 2D-shallow water equations model, through the coupling of the hydrological software HEC-HMS with the hydrodynamic software HEC-RAS. Regarding the observed data, the limited available gauged records led us to use a wide spectrum of remote sensing datasets associated with rainfall, such as NASA GPM–IMREG, and numerous videos posted on social media, such as Facebook, in order to validate the extent of the flood. The overall assessment proved that the exceedance probability of the IANOS flooding event ranged from 1:400 years in the low-lying catchments, to 1:1000 years in the upstream mountainous catchments. Moreover, a good performance for the simulated flooding extent was achieved using the numerical models and by comparing their output with the remote sensing footage provided by SENTINEL satellites images, along with the georeferenced videos posted on social media. Ombrian curves, i.e., curves linking rainfall intensity to return period and time scale, are well-established engineering tools crucial to the design against stormwaters and floods. Though the at-site construction of such curves is considered a standard hydrological task, it is a rather challenging one when large regions are of interest. Regional modeling of ombrian curves is particularly complex due to the need to account for spatial dependence together with the increased variability of rainfall extremes in space. We develop a framework for the parsimonious modeling of the extreme rainfall properties at any point in a given area. This is achieved by assuming a common ombrian model structure, except for a spatially varying scale parameter which is itself modeled by a spatial smoothing model for the 24 h average annual rainfall maxima that employs elevation as an additional explanatory variable. The fitting is performed on the pooled all-stations data using an advanced estimation procedure (K-moments) that allows both for reliable high-order moment estimation and simultaneous handling of space-dependence bias. Three Mw > 5.5 earthquakes (Tyrnavos, Elassona and Verdikoussa earthquakes) struck the northern Thessaly, Greece, from 3 March to 12 March 2021, filling a significant seismic gap. We exploit Interferometric synthetic aperture radar data to investigate coseismic deformation of these events and the first half‐year postseismic deformation related to the Tyrnavos event. Our coseismic modeling reveals that the seismic sequence activated at least four unmapped low‐angle normal faults. However, postseismic analysis shows that afterslip propagates updip to a high‐angle shallow structure, indicating that the coseismic slip and afterslip jointly activated a ramp‐flat structure. By a comprehensive analysis of the inversions, fault distribution, relocated aftershocks and regional stress changes, we highlight that intersections between the main and secondary faults control the slip extent and rupture termination in each earthquake and that static stress transfers induced by earlier event encourage the rupture reinitiation of the later event. Plain Language Summary: As the largest events to hit the Tyrnavos basin since 1941 Mw 6.3 Larissa earthquake, the Thessaly seismic sequence consisting of three Mw > 5.5 earthquakes provides a rare chance to gain insight into the regional seismogenic structure as well as the rupture behavior of faults. Here, we combine coseismic Interferometric synthetic aperture radar observations and relocated aftershocks to explore the optimal seismogenic structure of the seismic sequence which ruptured at least four buried normal faults: one NE‐dipping main fault and one NNE‐dipping secondary fault for the Tyrnavos event, one NE‐dipping fault for the Elassona event and one antithetic SW‐dipping fault for Verdikoussa event. Further combined with an analysis of field investigation and postseismic observations following the Tyrnavos event, we find compared with coseismic slip at depths of 1.9–8.4 km on a gentle main fault, most afterslip is confined at depths of 0–1.7 km on a steep fault, which reveals a ramp‐flat structure. We further investigate the causes for cascading (stop‐start) rupture of the seismic sequence and find that fault intersections play a significant role in halting the rupture propagation, leading to a multi‐fault delayed rupture, and that static stress changes promote the restart of slip. The behavior and possible contamination risk due to the presence of potentially harmful metals (PHM) were studied based on 2250 soil samples that were collected in a 5-year period (2013–2017) from the plain of Thessaly (prefectures of Karditsa, Trikala, and Larissa). The vertical distribution of metals was also investigated from sample profiles at three depths 0–30, 30–60, and 60–90cm. The soils of the sampling belong to four taxonomy soil orders that are dominant in the studied area (Alfisols, Inceptisols, Endisols, and Vertisols). In a novel approach, robust quadratic regression analysis on multiple variables was used to define prediction models of the concentrations of two metals: Fe which is an essential metal and the toxic Cd. Linear and quadratic regression formulae were estimated based on the iteratively reweighted least squares robust regression approach in an effort to eliminate the impact of the outliers. These formulae define how several soil properties affect the distribution of the considered metals in each soil order. The evaluation of the estimated regression equations based on the R2 metric indicates that they constitute a useful, reliable, and valuable tool for managing, describing, and predicting the pollution in the studied area. On March 3, 2021, a strong shallow earthquake of magnitude Mw 6.3 struck Northern Thessaly, an area that lies in one of the most active fault zones of mainland Greece. The mainshock generated numerous aftershocks, with some of large magnitude reaching up to Mw 6.0. In this work, we study the scaling properties and the physical mechanisms of aftershock occurrence during the pronounced aftershock sequence that followed the mainshock. The aftershock sequence obeys well-established scaling relationships, such as the Gutenberg-Richter scaling law for the frequency-magnitude distribution of aftershocks with a b-value of 0.90 ± 0.03 and a composite model of three modified Omori regimes for the decay of the aftershocks production rate. The distribution of waiting times between the successive aftershocks also presents scaling and a bimodal distribution between two power-law regimes, signifying clustering effects at all time scales in the temporal occurrence of aftershocks. Application of principal component analysis to the spatial distribution of aftershocks indicates that the activated area reached its maximum during the first ten days after the mainshock and then remained constant. Aftershocks mainly propagated along fault strike on a NW–SE direction during the early phase of postseismic relaxation, driven by a combination of co-seismic stress changes and afterslip following the mainshock. Overall, the results presented herein provide important insights into the scaling parameters and the triggering mechanisms of the 2021 Northern Thessaly aftershock sequence, which are essential for better understanding and modeling the aftershock generation process. The scope of this study is to assess the effects of agronomic and water resources management scenarios on groundwater balance, seawater intrusion, and nitrate pollution and the comparison of the developed scenarios relative to the current crop production and water management regime in the coastal agricultural Almyros basin in the Thessaly region, Greece. Agronomic and water resources scenarios have been simulated and analyzed for a period of 28 years, from 1991 to 2018. The analysis has been conducted with the use of an Integrated Modeling System for agricultural coastal watersheds, which consists of coupled and interlinked simulation models of surface water hydrology (UTHBAL), reservoir operation (UTHRL), agronomic/nitrate leaching model (REPIC), and groundwater models for the simulation of groundwater flow (MODFLOW) and contaminant transport of nitrates (MT3DMS) and chlorides (SEAWAT). The pressure on water resources has been estimated with the Water Exploitation Index (WEI+) and the reservoirs' operation with the Reliability index to cover the water demands. The indices of Crop Water Productivity, Nitrogen Use Efficiency, and Economic Water Productivity have been used to quantify the benefits and the feasibility of the alternative scenarios. The best results for the sustainability of water resources are achieved under the deficit irrigation and rain-fed scenario, while the best results for water resources and the local economy are achieved under deficit irrigation and reduced fertilization scenario. AquaCrop is a well-known water-oriented crop model. The model has been often used to simulate various crops and the water balance in the field under different irrigation treatments, but studies that relate AquaCrop to fertilization are rare. In this study, the ability of this model to simulate yield and the water balance parameters was investigated in a wheat field under different nitrogen management practices. During the 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 growing seasons, meteorological data were provided from a nearby meteorological station, and the evolution of soil water content and final yields were recorded. The model showed a very good performance at simulating the soil water content evolution in the root zone. Notwithstanding its simplicity, AquaCrop based on a semi-quantitative approach for fertility performed well at the field level for the final yield estimation under different nitrogen treatments and field topography variation. Although the correlation coefficient between simulated and measured final yields was high, increased values of variations were observed in the various zones of this experimental field (−50% to +140%). The model appears to be an efficient tool for evaluating and improving the management practices at the field level. The experiments were conducted in Thessaly, which is the largest plain and the main agricultural area of Greece. Thessaly, however, has a strong negative water balance, which has led to a strong decrease in the level of the aquifer and, at the same time, to sea intrusion. There is also a significant risk of contamination of the groundwater aquifer due to increased use of agrochemicals. This analysis is particularly important for Thessaly due to the need for improvement of agricultural practices in this area, to decrease the pressure of agricultural activities on natural resources (soil, water) and reverse the consequences of current management. The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-reported risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in the municipality of Thessaly, Greece, and the level of awareness of both the disease and its diagnosis. Inhabitants of Thessaly (254 total; 84 men and 170 women) were studied by means of questionnaires via a telephone-randomized survey. This comprised: (a) the Berlin questionnaire for evaluation of OSAS risk; (b) the evaluation of daytime sleepiness by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale; and (c) demographic and anthropometric data. The percentage of participants at high risk for OSA was 26.77%, and the percentage of people who were at high risk of excessive daytime sleepiness was 10.63%. High risk for OSAS was found to be 3.94%. No significant differences were found between high- and low-risk OSAS participants associated with age, smoking and severity of smoking. Regarding the knowledge of the community about OSAS, the majority of the sample was aware of the entity (64.17%), while fewer had knowledge about the diagnosis (18.50%) and polysomnography (24.80%). The high risk of OSA prevalence and the low awareness of the diagnosis of OSA highlights the need for the development of health promotion programs aiming at increasing the disease awareness in the general population in order to address OSA more effectively. The impact of simulated future climate change on land degradation was assessed in three representative study sites of Thessaly, Greece, one of the country's most important agronomic zones. Two possible scenarios were used for estimation of future climatic conditions, which were based on greenhouse gas emissions (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). Three time periods were selected: the reference past period 1981–2000 for comparison, and the future periods 2041–2060 and 2081–2100. Based on soil characteristics, past and future climate conditions, type of land uses, and land management prevailing in the study area, the Environmentally Sensitive to desertification Areas (ESAs) were assessed for each period using the MEDALUS-ESAI index. Soil losses derived by water and tillage erosion were also assessed for the future periods using existing empirical equations. Furthermore, primary soil salinization risk was assessed using an algorithm of individual indicators related to the natural environment or socio-economic characteristics. The obtained data by both climatic scenarios predicted increases in mean maximum and mean minimum air temperature. Concerning annual precipitation, reductions are generally expected for the three study sites. Desertification risk in the future is expected to increase in comparison to the reference period. Soil losses are estimated to be more important in sloping areas, due especially to tillage erosion in at least one study site.
