Abstract

The stories of 19th century German writer Wilhelm Hauff are dual-voiced tales ostensibly aimed at a young audience, but also containing a politically subversive message for adult readers. 'Dwarf Long Nose' is a prime example of a seemingly innocuous story of the German duchy crafted in such a way as to slip its subtextual message past censors. Hauff's contemporary readership included both educated bourgeosie children and savvy adults, but the duality of his audience has made it difficult to classify his works as strictly children's literature.

Abstract

This essay discusses the short story "De quoi t'ennuies-tu Éveline?," by Gabrielle Roy. This was the last work published by Roy before her death in 1983. This story had a much broader social and cultural significance than previous critics have recognized and focuses on her view of American-Canadian cultural relations as seen through the eyes of the main character, Éveline, who is modeled after Roy's mother.
