Aristolochia longa has been known by its potentiel to cure various diseases.This study was aimd to estimate the antioxidant activity and tannin content of A.longa leaves and roots. Liquid-liquid fractionation by using three solvants was experimented for extraction of tannin from leaves and roots.Then the fractions were oven-dried and powdered to determine the condensed tannin content and antioxidant activity by acidic vanillin, DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods.The qualitative analysis was releazed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC DAD-MS).The highest extraction yield was obtained by roots N-butanol fraction (5.15±0.47%).The maximum tannin content value was noted in roots N-butanol fraction (3.90±0.24 mg QUE/g DM) followed by leaves ethyl acetate fraction (3.03±0.01 mg QUE/g DM).The IC50 values of DPPH radical scavenging activity varied significantly from IC50=0.123±0.009mg/ml to 3.737±0.56 mg/ml. Since, the FRAP values ranged from EC50=0.066±0.002 mg/ml to 4,00±0,2 mg/ml. The highest antioxydant ability was observed in leaves and roots N-butanol fractions .Also, the identification by HPLC analysis showed that the roots contains some tannin compounds than leaves such as vescalagin, Roburin D and 1,3,4-tri- O -galloylquinic acid.Our study confirmed the use of A.longa to prevent and control the oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is a potent central and respiratory acting agent used in neonatology to treat apnea in premature newborns. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effects of caffeine orally administered to newborn rats on gastrointestinal permeability, bacterial translocation and different biochemical parameters. METHODS: Newborn rats were divided into different groups (N = 06). The treated newborn rats were orally administered with standard caffeine doses (12 mg/kg per day), and the control groups received a placebo. The animals were weighed daily until sacrifice. Blood samples, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) and organs were aseptically collected. Furthermore, different biochemical (D-Lactate) and oxidative stress biomarkers (MDA, CAT, SOD and GSH) were examined. Microbiological analyses were performed to assess microbiota alterations and bacterial translocation. Rosmarinus officinalis and Globularia alypum are well known and commonly used in Algeria as species and medicinal plants. The composition and the biological activities of plants depend on several factors. We investigated the influence of one factor: the extraction process. Water and methanol (80%) were used as solvent in the extraction by infusion, decoction and cold maceration. The extracts were evaluated regarding yields, thin layer chromatography, phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Results showed that temperature increase plants extraction biomass efficiency (15.90% for rosemary and 28.10% for globular). Phytochemical screening of extracts revealed the presence of several phenolic classes, including flavonoids and tannins. In addition, G. alypum contains irridiods. Thin layer chromatography showed the presence of some phenolic compounds, particularly flavonoids, of which methanolic extracts gave the highest separation. Levels of total phenolics, flavonoïds and tannins were highly influenced by method and solvent system applied. Methanolic extracts were richest in flavonoïds (39.90 mg QE/g for rosmary and 17.97mg QE/g for globular). While, for both plants, higher concentrations of tannins were noted for aqueous extracts prepared by decoction (15.9 mg CE/g and 28.10 mg CE/g respectively). Regarding the antioxidant activity, the antiradical effect of the extracts against the DPPH radical was interesting with an IC50 between 0.024 and 0.33 mg/ml, noting that R. officinalis methanol extract was the most powerful. However, G. alypum extracts, presented a higher reductive power than rosemary. Aqueous extracts, were the most active, reaching optical densities of 1.41 for water infusion extract and 1.53 for water decoction extract.

Introduction: Today, people around the world have resorted to herbal medicine, due to the increase in antibiotic resistance and the side effects of synthetic drugs. Methods: Our research focused on the in vivo antifungal activity of three ointments formulated on the basis of methanolic extract of Citrus aurantium peel, ethanolic extract of the aerial part of Artemisia herba alba asso, and essential oil of Artemisia herba alba asso. Wistar rats were made immunosuppressed by Dexamethazone and Tetracycline. Three strains of Candida albicans, S1, S2 and S3 were inoculated. The fungal load of the area tested, the weight of the rats, as well as the macroscopic and microscopic appearance of the skins, were determined. Results: Cutaneous candidiasis was manifested as red, thick, scabbed lesions, mostly located on the infected area of t he animals. Microscopic observation of histological skin sections of animals infected and treated with the ointments, P1, P2 and P3 showed a well-preserved architecture of the skin. Erythema, edema, ulceration, erosion were seen in the skin of animals receiving placebo or Nystatin. The P3 ointment exerted a very powerful antifungal effect against especially the strain S1 compared to the other ointments (log 3.07±0.006 CFU/ml). The weight was regained significantly in the groups of animals receiving the ointments, and regression of growth was observed in the untreated animals and those treated by Nystatin and placebo. Conclusion: The EAH and MCP ointment and the essential oil of Artemisia developed, allowed to retain their significant antifungal activity against Candida.

Given the increase in antibiotic resistance phenomena and the undesirable effects of synthetic drugs. Medicinal plants are used as a direct or indirect source of the active ingredients. Our research constitutes a development of essential oils from Artemisia herba alba Asso cultivated in the Mascara region. A hydrophobic ointment has been formulated based on this essential oil and tested against five strains of Candida albicans. Several physicochemical and microbiological tests were used to verify the quality and the toxicity of the product. Then, the determination of the antifungal activity of this preparation was assessed against five strains of Candida albicans (S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5) by the disk-diffusion agar method. The results revealed that this preparation was devoid of total aerobic germs, yeasts and molds. However, the pH value was found equal to 5.98. In addition, the irritation primary index was marked less than 0.5. The ointment was powerful against S1, S3, S4 and S5 strains with inhibition diameters ranging from 16± 4 mm to 23 ± 2 mm. The Nystatin ointment was observed active against strains S2, S4 and S5 with diameters of the zones of inhibition; 21 ± 2 mm, 21± 1 mm and 20 ± 3 mm respectively. The ointment formulated with essential oil from Artemisia herba alba asso has proven useful against candidiasis caused by Candida albicans species.

Background: The objective of this study was to test the toxicology and microbiological of methanolic extract of Marrubium vulgare "MEMV" in rat and its efficiency in the treatment of systemic candidiasis. Methods: Forty (40) male rats (Wistar type) were divided into four groups (10 rats /group) where the toxicological, microbiological and histological studies were applied. Later, the infection with 107 cells /ml of Candida albicans and the curative treatment were applied by the daily administration with a gavage of 800 mg/kg of MEMV. Results: The toxicology studies indicated that the dose of MEMV at 800 mg/kg of body weight was not harmful. The microbiological and histological analysis showed that the treatment with MEMV of rat colonized with 107 cells/ml of Candida albicans limits the multiplication of the yeast in the intestine and colon of the colonized rat. The translocation of Candida albicans in liver, spleen and lungs in rat which was treated with 800 mg/kg of MEMV was significantly lower than in controls to seven post-infection days. However, we did not detect yeast in the kidneys and hearts of the infected treated groups and the infected untreated ones. Conclusion: Our results suggest that MEMV limits the gastrointestinal colonization and dissemination of Candida albicans in the other organs.

Childhood malnutrition is a severe disease that kills 3.1 million children under the age of five worldwide yearly. Our objectives are to comparethe clinical profile and the intestinal microbiota of malnourished children and healthy ones residing in the city of Mascara (Algeria), and to specify the impact of the administration of renutrition milk on the improvement of their gut microbiota.40 children in total, aged between 2 and 36 months were chosen for this study. A clinical examination and a microbiological analysis of fecal matter were performed. The first results showed that the malnourished children included in the study suffer from severe malnutrition characterized by stunting and remarkable underweight and that their intestinal flora is quantitatively and qualitatively differentfrom that of healthy children. Moreover;the administration of the renutrition milk has a positive influence on the composition of the intestinal flora in these malnourished children.

Different solvent systems have been used for the extraction of polyphenols from plant material, however, the appropriate solvent system is more effective for extracting the total phenolic of any plant extract and evaluating the antibacterial activity is not determined yet. Thus, the objective of this research was to determine the most effective solvent for extraction and characterization of polyphenols as well as antibacterial activity of the aerial parts Ajuga iva extracts. The Soxhlet method was devised to extract polyphenols from aerials parts of Ajuga iva powders, for this matter, three different solvents were used In order to analyze and quantify the result an in vitro evaluation of the antibacterial activity of the various plant extracts was carried out. The preliminary evaluation of the chemical composition made it possible to highlight the presence of some chemical groups. The quantitative determination of polyphenols is twofold, first the dichloromethanic extract contains the highest levels of polyphenols (3.38 mg GAE/g), second the ethanolic extract contains the highest levels of flavonoids (6.59 mg CE/g DW) and tannins (14.58 mg CE/g DW). On other hand, a remarkable antibacterial activity of some tested extracts was detected. The results showed that solvents with different polarities significantly affected polyphenol content and antibacterial activity.

Le genre bactérien Vibrio fait partie des bactéries ubiquistes des eaux et des zones côtières, certaines espèces sont pathogènes pour l’homme et les animaux aquatiques. Parmi elles, Vibrio cholerae est reconnue pour son impact clinique, sanitaire et économique. La propagation de clones multirésistants aux antibiotiques est une menace pour la santé publique. Dans ce travail, notre objectif est d’évaluer le risque de contamination des eaux de différents sites de la ville de Mascara (Algérie) par vibrion cholérique, de déterminer sa résistance aux antibiotiques et de rechercher de nouveaux composés alternatifs naturels actifs issus de la plante médicinale Atriplex halimus, sur cet agent pathogène. Les premiers résultats révèlent la présence de Vibrio cholerae dans les eaux prélevées. Ces souches étaient multirésistantes à la plupart des antibiotiques surtout à l’ampicilline, à la tétracycline, à l’amoxicilline, à l’érythromycine et à la doxycycline. Les extraits aqueux et méthanolique de la plante possèdent une activité antibactérienne contre Vibrio cholerae. L’extrait aqueux exerce un effet inhibiteur avec une teneur de 100 à 200 μl/ml, alors que l’extrait méthanolique est actif avec des concentrations plus faibles de l’ordre de 25 à 100 μl/ml. Ces résultats encouragent la conduite à l’identification de substances bioactives, capables de restaurer l’activité de plusieurs classes d’antibiotiques synthétiques sur ces souches multirésistantes.

Introduction Phytochemicals are one wide class of nutraceuticals found in plants which act as antioxidants. In this research, the essential oil (EO) of Teucrium polium L., Lamiaceae, collected from Mascara province, situated in the Algerian northwestern, where their chemical composition varies according to geographical origin, season variation, and climatic conditions were studied. Materials and Methods The extraction of EO was performed by hydrodistillation. Then, the chemical compounds were identified by gaz chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC–MS). In parallel, the antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH test. Results The yield of the EO of T. polium L. varied during different seasons with the highest in winter season, at vegetative stage (S1), while the same EO (S1) was significantly more efficient as an antioxidant than the EO harvasted at the flowering stage (S2) with IC50 values 3.90±0.05, 16.14±0.15 mg/mL, respectively (P < 0.001). These extracts are predominantly constituted by limonene (29.87%-26.39%), spathulenol (17.24%-13.29%), camphor (0.0%-8.20%), pinocarvone (7.76%-5.60%), tau-cadinol (5.41%-3.67%), pinene oxide (0.0%-4.78%), α-terpineol (0.0%-4.6%), 1-adamantanemethylamine (0.0%-9.80%) and β- myrcene (0.0%-4.02%). Conclusions The results show that both EOs can be considered as potential sources of natural antioxidants. However, the vegetative stage was the best stage for harvesting the EO of T. polium L. which can be used as an alternative source of synthetic compounds.

Artemisia herba alba asso, peel and leaves of Citrus aurantium grown in the western Algerian city (Mascara) were subjected to hydrodistillation by Clevenger dispositive. The essential oils obtained were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and used for the study of the antifungal activity against five clinical strains of Candida albicans. The results of chemical analysis revealed 40 constituents in Artemisia essential oil, where the major components were camphor (34.89%) and chrysantenone (19.60%). While, the main component of peel and leaves of Citrus essential oils was the lineal (42.33%, 60.62%) respectively. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration value was found in the case of Artemisia essential oil (1.95l/ml) against the (S3) Candida albicans strain. The experimental results confirmed that these extracts are marked by significant anti-fungal activity, which can be used as alternative drugs against candidiasis.

Ficus carica L. have always been known by their power to cure various diseases. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity of twelve different extracts of three samples of dried figs. First, the extracts were tested for their polyphenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents by the Folin–Ciocalteu, the aluminium trichloride and vanillin methods and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for more characterisation. The antioxidant activity was performed by using thre different methods; the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The results showed that the methanolic extract of Sidi Bendjebbar sample presented a higher TPC value (458 mg GAE /g) while the acetonic and aqueous extracts of El-Keurt presented a higher values of TFC and CTC. In other hand, the methanol extract of El-Keurt sample exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity with an IC50 of 0.078 mg/ml. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts against various Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria was screened by the inhibition zone using the disc and diffusion assay, minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) by micro-well method allonwing to calculate the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC). The ethanolic extracts of the two samples El-Keurt and Sidi Bendjebbar were the most effective extracts being able to inhibit the growth of the majority of the strains tested. Our study supported the use of these fruit as supplements for nutrient deficiencies and for combating diseases associated with oxydative damage or some microbial infection for better drug alternatives.

Enterobacter cloacae is currently known as a urinary tract infection agent, especially in hospitals recognized by its resistance to 3rd generation cephalosporin’s, which makes it a target for different works in order to find natural and definitive means of fight and treatment. Their limited biochemical reactivity and their different morphotypes is a real obstacle to their identification by conventional phenotypic means. 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene sequencing is highly successful for bacterial identification. However, in recent years, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time in flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has emerged as a very valid technique for the identification and diagnosis of microorganisms. Our study aims to identify three bacteria belonging to the Enterobacter cloacae species isolated from various environments by the MALDI-TOF/MS method and then to study their antimicrobial activity against some extracts of dried figs of Ficus carica fruits grown in the mascara region (western Algeria). The determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) shows a significant inhibition of the activity of E. cloacae by the methanolic extract of El-Keurt variety at 2.34 mg/ml of extract. This study seems to give good guidance for the use of dried figs against Enterobacter infections.

According to WHO, osteoporosis is the second most important public health problem after cardiovascular disease. About 200 million women in the world have osteoporosis; it is the second leading cause of death in women after breast cancer. In Algeria, 4 million people suffer from osteoarthritic diseases and 40% of those are women. The ultimate objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of dietary fiber from carrots and wheat bran on biochemical markers of bone remodeling in postmenopausal hemodialysis women. The study population consisted of 30 postmenopausal women (61.39 ± 8.44 years) receiving hemodialysis treatment as well as diets high in dietary fiber to assess the state of their bones. Biochemical markers of osteoresorption: pyridinoline LP and hydroxypyridinoline HP in urine were measured by the HPLC method, as well as the biochemical markers of osteoformation: total alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and calcium balance. This population was divided into four groups, T-controls who followed a regular diet, GC group: a high-carrot diet, GS group: hard wheat bran (100 g/day), and the GCS group: a mixture of these two foods (50/50 g/day). And the three groups GC, GS, and GCS receive a calcium intake (800 g/day) of calcium carbonate orally for 1 month. Urine and blood samples were taken weekly: T0, T7, T15, T21, T30, and T45. Our results show that women under carrot diet excreted significantly (p < 0.05) the highest values of hydroxypyridinolines (HP) and pyridinolines (LP), in their different forms, as well as calciuria and PAL. While the wheat diet shows lower levels of HP and no effect on other markers of osteoresorption and osteoformation.

Plants still present a large source of novel active biological compounds with different activities. The antioxidant activity of three extracts was evaluated by DPPH and ferric reducing antioxidant power methods. The formulated extracts were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and then confirmed by High performance liquid chromatography coupled with DAD detector (HPLC-DAD). The results showed the richness of these extracts in phenolic compounds. Three major compounds, resveratrol (17.98%), kaempferol-glucoside (7.23%) and vanillic acid (10.64%) were detected in methanolic extract of Citrus aurantium peel, aqueous extract of Citrus aurantium L. leaves and ethanolic extract of Artemisia herba alba Asso respectively by HPLC-DAD. However, the ethanolic extract of A. herba alba achieved 50% of the anti-radical activity at a concentration equal to 0.8 mg/ml. A higher antioxidant activity measured by ferric reducing antioxidant power was marked in the same extract with an absorbance equal to 0.824. The ethanolic extract of the aerial part of A. herba alba, the methanolic extract of C. aurantium peel and the aqueous extract of C. aurantium leaves were considered as powerful scavengers of free radicals and can be incorporated into the pharmaceuticals preparations to treat many diseases.

The mucosal surfaces of the intestinal tract harbor a complex microbiota. Bacteria enter in contact with intestinal cells and bestow important nutritional, metabolic and protective functions which benefit the host. Various factors are able to alter the balances between different intestinal bacteria. Dysbiosis has been described in various pathologies and metabolic diseases in humans, such as cancer. Colorectal cancer pathology can benefit from gut microbial imbalance. Its overgrowth may lead to acute symptoms. An alternative strategy to restore this balance is the use of plant extracts which exhibit a prebiotic activity by stimulating of probiotic bacteria and antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria colonization. The present study aims to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activity of phenolic extracts (Aqueous extract "AE" and Methanolic extract "ME" ) from Zizyphus lotus. It aims also to investigate the effect of this extract as a prebiotic on the aggregation of probiotic and inhibitory effects of pathogenic bacteria isolated from faeces of patients with colorectal cancer. Phytochemical analysis of different extracts from Zizyphus lotus by HPLC showed that all are rich in phenolic compounds ( 225.40 mgAGE/gDW for AE and 63.04 mgAGE/gDW for ME extracts ). Moreover, all extracts showed an important antioxidant activity (227 µg/ml for AE and 195 µg/ml for ME). These extracts also exhibited a significant prebiotic effect and antibacterial activity. C haracterization of the in vitro effect of the aqueous extract showed that the percentage of autoaggregation and adhesion of probiotic and inhibitory effects of pathogenic bacteria increased in the presence of aqueous extracts.

An in vitro evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of essential oil (EO) and methanol extract (ME) from Algerian Nigella sativa L. seeds against microbial strains isolated from the oral cavities of periodontal patients was performed. Twelve Gram-positive bacteria, eleven Gram-negative bacteria and three microscopic fungi strains were isolated and identified. The antimicrobial activities of EO and ME were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus sp., Acinetobacter baumannii/calcoaceticus, Porphyromonas sp., Veillonella sp., Candida sp. and Saccharomyces sp.. The total polyphenol and flavonoids contents of ME were higher than those of EO. Thin layer chromatography showed that catechin, gallic acid and quercetin were most likely present in the extracts. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analysis (FT-IR) indicated the presence of bands from the CO groups of acids, alcohols, phenols, and ethers and the CO band of aldehydes. Analysis of the antimicrobial activity of N. sativa extracts obtained by the microdilution method showed excellent bactericidal activity of the essential oil and moderate efficiency of the ME against all the microbes tested. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Porphyromonas sp. were the most sensitive to EO (minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC): 16,500 μg/ml) at 48 h of incubation and, 125,000 μg/ml of ME was the most active against all the microbes tested. However, after18 or 24 h, this efficiency was decreased in some strains. In addition, Saccharomyces sp. and Candida albicans were more sensitive to EO than ME during the incubation, while this efficiency was clearly not visible with the agar well method, and most microbes tested presented remarkable resistance to these extracts. Thymus serpyllum is an aromatic and medicinal plant widely used in Algerian folk medicine. It was collected from Mascara region North West of Algeria and studied in the aim to provide more knowledge about chemical composition, antioxidant and photo-protective activities of essential oil, ethanolic and infusion extracts. The chemical analysis of investigated T. serpyllum EO was performed for the first time in this research work. It was carried out by GC/MS for identifying 25 components where the dominated compounds were Carvacrol (66%) and γ–Terpinene (11.5%). The phenolic profile of ethanolic and aqueous infusion extracts was performed using HPLC chromatography and the data showed the Benzoic acid and Rosmarinc acid were found as major compounds. Extracts showed an excellent source of total phenols and flavonoids. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH, Galvinoxyl radical (GOR), CUPRAC, reducing power and O-phenanthroline approaches. All extracts showed a significant antioxidant capacity with different mechanisms. However, ethanol and infusion extracts showed stronger capacity than EO. Moreover, the photoprotective activity of T. serpyllum extracts was explored for the first time in our study. Extracts exhibited high values of sun protective factors (SFP) with 38.34±2.29 and 38.82±2.23 for ethanol and infusion extract respectively. Results of our study may encourage the pharmacologic, food and cosmetic sectors to use the wild thyme as natural and healthy source of active compounds.

The imbalance of the intestinal microbiota is link, by several diseases such as celiac disease, which causes inflammation in the small intestine. This inflammation is due by the digestion of gluten present in some type of cereals. In this work, fecal and duodenal biopsy samples were collected to characterize by conventional culture technique the composition of the Enterobacteries group in intestinal mirobiota of celiac children and were compared with control children. A significant difference detected in the intestinal flora of celiac children compared to controls children concerning the Enterobacteries group. We found an increase of E.coli, Enterobacter aerogeneses, and Klebsiella with presence of Salmonella sp, Shigella sp in biopsy and fecal samples of celiac children and a relationship between the increase of Enterobacter cloacea and the presence of positive anti-transglutaminase value.

Background: The plants represent an important source of various chemical structures known for their therapeutic activities in folk medicine. Our study aimed to exploit natural bioactive components from well-known medicinal plants "Rosmarinus officinalis and Populus alba". Methods: The study of acute toxicity of essential oils of Rosemary and White poplar was carried out on Wistar rats. Then, the effect of these essential oils was studied in the treatment of experimental models induced by knee osteoarthritis. A radiographic and Histologic analysis was carried out to monitor the efficiency of essential oil. The choice of the model of osteoarthritis turned to unilateral intra-articular injection of a mono-iodo acetic acid. Results: The results revealed that the action of the essential oil showed a significant decrease in the Mankin score compared to the group of untreated rats. Conclusion: The essential oils of R. officinalis, P. alba presented an protective effect against osteoarthritis with difference degrees.
